Travel trailer hauling

I have a 2020 Ford Transit 250 base high ceiling, it doest have tow package. I was wondering how well pulling a small travel trailer works with this van. It calls for 4800 max tow weight. The trailer will weigh 3500 pounds loaded. I was checking to see if anyone has had experience doing this. Thanks in advance for any info.

You won’t feel it, but you’ll see the gas gauge move faster. Regardless of trailer weight, the added frontal area always uses more fuel.

You’ll be fine. I tow a 23 ft travel trailer that weighs about 5,500 lbs loaded (van’s rated for 5,800 lbs) with my T250 low roof, EB, with 3.31 limited slip. Get 11-13 mpg on mostly flat land. You realize it’s not hard to add 1,000 pounds to the dry weight of a camper? 3,500 lbs sounds pretty light.

What happens if I pull 6000 with my 2020 250 with ecoboost and the 3.31 and limited slip?

GapRunr

Your fuel gauge will move faster. What wheelbase and roof height? Cargo and Passenger also make a difference but since it is a 250 I am assuming it is a cargo.

Hi, My van is the long wheelbase, not the extended, with medium roof height. It's a cargo van I've converted to a camper. BTW, I regularly get 22 mpg at 70 mph on I-75 in FL, which has easy slopes. My hope is to pull a 5,000 lb 25 ft boat on a 850 lb two axle (4 wheels) trailer with electric over hydraulic disc brakes, so I figure 6,000 lbs. I'm cautious, slow to accelerate, and I pull at less than 60 mph if pulling more than about 3,500 lbs. I'd likely pull the 6,000 at 55-60. BTW, I pull my Casita (2,500 lbs) at 65 and get about 16 mpg.

You can lookup the max tow rating, gvwr and gcwr for your van, then go weigh the van and you will have everything you need to figure it all out and know how much you can tow. I believe the max tow rating for your van is around 5300, but the actual amount you can tow depends a lot on how much weight is in the van and for a heavy loaded van, it will be much less.

Use tow haul and use lockout 3 or 4 in heavy inclines. Don't want it shifting overdrive 6&5 constantly. I wouldn't even let it into6th at all unless on flat highways.👍🏻

There's an official guide to towing from Ford, and it's slightly different between models and trim levels. I've towed 5500# with the 3.7 with no issues. You have to pull a lower gear going up steep mountain grades, but certainly doable in a mostly empty cargo 250. I've been told that with my hitch that's rated to 7800# I could tow that much with a load equalizing hitch. I don't doubt it, but have no reason to test this. I am a little concerned about the small brakes more than anything else. They're not really very robust for the potential GVWR.

Oddly enough even when I called Fors directly and gave them my vin they were not sure. I KNOW it will pull it but am i going to be able to stop it. I guess that's where the trailer brakes factor in.

OldMadBrit

I have pulled various trailers with our van conversion, including a ~2400lb Uhaul twin axle vehicle trailer with my heavy 3400lb pig of a track toy on it for 500 miles and over 7400ft. Our van was at full expedition weight of ~8,000lb. Apart from the gas gauge going down faster, we couldn't tell there was a trailer hanging off the back.

THANK you. U think I was just so wary because i couldn't get a straight answer from Ford directly ir any dealership I talked to. They were all over the place so i thought i would ask others on this forum what there experience has been. Can i drive my transit van on to a cat scale to get my true weight

I want to thank everyone that commented on my concern because I got more intelligent answers from you that dealers and Ford directly

So in your opinion am I safe towinw a 6000 pound cargo trailer tandem axle that has electric brakes and just set my intergrated brake controller accordingly

The 2017 Ford Towing Guide lists the T250 Medium roof, long wheelbase cargo van having a maximum towing capacity of 5400 pounds with the 3.31 axle and 6,800 pounds with the 3.73 axle. Check your owners manual to see what it shows for that engine, axle, wheelbase combo. Does the tandem axle trailer actually weigh 6,000 pounds on a scale, or is that its rating?

The trailer is actually 3600 lbs but it has been converted to a camper really more like a tiny home though. The person I bought it from is an ER Doctor that built it so he's calling it 6000 pounds weather he's put it on a scale or not I do not know. Could I drive it over a scale at a Pilot or somewhere that has a CAT scale to verify that. I don't think I would be so concerned if I knew Exacly what it did weigh. Also my Transit van does have the Eco Boost V6 3.31 axle & and the trailer comes with a weight distribution hitch and swaybar HOWEVER we live in a very mountainous area and want to travel so my concern is am I going to be able to pull this safetly not worried about the gas mileage as much as saftey. We motorhomed all over the US for 8 years but it was in a 36' class A pulling a Honda CRV 4 down so we're pretty use to RVing. just concerned about the compatabilty of the van with the trailer. The Van is a Sherrod Conversion and I don't want to ruin that either.

Loaded it all up, trailer and all, and go to a cat scale.

When you weight the trailer, also get a 4-corner weight on the Transit. When you utilize weight-distribution, it's really easy to overload the front axle, especially on the 148" non-extended models. Prior to the heavy-duty front axle option, it could be maxed out without using a WD hitch (depending on loading) and that's why Ford doesn't recommend it for the Transit vans. It's not a structural limitation. Just remember that WD is only supposed to restore up to normal un-hitched front-axle weight. It's not supposed to increase front-axle loading further.

I live close to a pilot

A Ford Transit Can Tow. What You Need To Know

Ford Transit vans can tow trailers, RVs, and even cars. The Ford Transit Cargo Van has a towing capacity of 4,700 to 6,900 pounds, the Ford Transit Passenger Van has a towing capacity of 3,400 to 4,600 pounds, and the Transit Crew Van can tow between 4,300 to 6,500 pounds.

Towing a trailer within a van’s limits doesn’t strain its drivetrain components, such as the engine and the axles. It enables you to carry more cargo than you would if you didn’t tow.

However, there’s more to hitching up your trailer and going on a trip.

If you already own or are considering buying a Ford Transit for towing, you might want to know if it can pull, how much it can tow, and how it can tow safely.

Well, you’re in the right place; let’s get deeper into the towing specifics of your van.

Ford Transit Van Towing Capacities

Ford transit cargo van .

The Ford Transit Cargo Van is a juggernaut suited to carrying and towing large cargo.

It comes with a 3.5-liter PFDi/Ecoboost V6 engine, a 10-speed transmission, and a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 10,800 to 13,000 pounds.

And similar to all Ford Transit vans, the cargo van has the 150, 250, and 350 trim levels.

The Transit Cargo Van models’ towing capacities/ maximum loaded trailer weight ratings in pounds are:

Ford Transit Crew Van

The Ford Transit Crew Van has a lower towing capacity than the Transit Cargo Van despite having a similar chassis and drivetrain configuration.

The transit Crew Van also features a seating space accommodating five passengers.

The Transit Crew Van towing capacities/ maximum loaded trailer weight ratings in pounds are:

Ford Transit Passenger Van

The Ford Transit Passenger Van’s design focuses more on comfort and convenience over its towing capacity.

It comes with a similar 3.5-liter PFDi/Ecoboost V6 engine, a 10-speed transmission, and a lesser Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 10,800 to 11,200 pounds.

The Transit Passenger Van has multiple seating configurations of a maximum of 15 passengers.

The Transit Passenger Van towing capacities/ maximum loaded trailer weight ratings in pounds are:

The Ford Transit’s Towing Capacity Calculations

Towing past your van’s capacity puts a strain on your it’s drivetrain. And if you aren’t careful, you might end up endangering your life and that of other road users.

Subtract your van’s GVWR from its GCWR to get its towing capacity.

The following weight rating acronyms will aid you in knowing your van’s towing capacity.

GVWR: The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum weight a van can handle without the trailer. It includes passengers, cargo, and the van’s weight. Include the tongue weight in the GVWR calculation if your van is towing.

GTW: The Gross Trailer Weight is the weight of your trailer or caravan, with all accessories and cargo included. GTW isn’t a rating determined by the trailer manufacturer but a measurement. Your trailer’s GTW mustn’t exceed its GVWR; otherwise, you’ll be overloading it.

GCWR: The Gross Combined Weight Rating is the total weight of your towing vehicle and trailer (GVWR + towing capacity) as determined by the manufacturer.

It takes into account all cargo and passengers in both vehicles.

GAWR: The Gross Axle Weight Rating shows the greatest weight that you can place on your van’s front or rear axles.

Tongue Weight: The Tongue Weight is the downward force a trailer tongue exerts on your tow van’s hitch ball. Alternatively, it’s the amount of trailer weight that transfers to your tow van once you connect the coupler to the hitch system.

A 10% Tongue Weight Improves Your Transit Van’s Handling

A Ford Transit proper tongue weight should be approximately 10 percent of the gross trailer weight (GTW).

For example, the Ford Transit Cargo Van 3.5L Ecoboost V6 AWD 148” wheelbase has a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds. Assuming you’re towing at total capacity, the tongue weight should be 650 pounds of Gross Trailer Weight (GTW).

Tongue weight is a measurement affected by how you load your trailer.

Placing the heavier items at the back of the trailer while the lighter ones at the front takes away a greater percentage of trailer weight from the trailer tongue. The tongue weight becomes less than 10 percent.

Placing more than 60 percent of your cargo at the front of the trailer puts a significant load at the tongue and hitch. The tongue weight is then higher than what Ford recommends.

And, here’s how tongue weight affects your driving.

  • If your trailer tongue weight is greater than the rated 10 percent, let’s say it’s 20 percent, it will cause an overload at your Ford Transit’s  rear axle and tires.

You will then lose the maximum traction from your front tires, and the van will tend to sway from side to side. It will become less responsive and transfer the swaying motion to the trailer.

  • If the tongue weight is less than the Ford Transit-rated 10 percent, let’s say it’s 7 percent, the trailer itself will sway from side to side. It gets even worse if you forget to secure your cargo to your trailer.

For such a case, the higher the driving speed, the higher the swaying.

Use a Scale To Measure your Trailer’s Tongue Weight

Now that you know an ideal tongue weight for your Ford Transit’s trailer, it’s time to accurately gauge if your cargo is within the legal and safety limits.

Here’s how you’ll know your trailer’s tongue weight.

Measuring With a Vehicle Scale

  • Drive your Ford Transit onto a vehicle scale without hooking up the trailer and record its weight.
  • Hook up your loaded trailer and measure your van’s weight without the trailer’s wheels touching the vehicle scale. Note the value on the weight scale and record.
  • Subtract the new van weight from your first reading (van weight without attaching the trailer) to get your trailer’s tongue weight.

Since getting precisely a 10 percent tongue weight may be challenging, any value between 10 to 11 percent is okay.

Measuring With a Tongue Weight Scale

Using a tongue weight scale is a convenient and easier way to know your trailer’s tongue weight.

The tongue weight scale takes an accurate reading when the trailer coupler rests on it and settles at the same height as the Transit hitch.

  • First, you’ll have to acquire a tongue weight scale from an auto parts store near you.
  • Unhitch your loaded trailer from your van, ensuring that you support it with the trailer jack.
  • To set up, place your tongue weight scale on a horizontal slab directly beneath the coupler socket. Some tongue weight scales are short while others are longer.
  • If yours is shorter than the hitch height, place a plank of wood below it to ensure its head is on the same level as the hitch ball.
  • Lower the trailer jack to the point that the coupler entirely rests on the scale and the jack is off the ground.
  • Whatever reading you’ll get from your tongue weight scale is your trailer’s tongue weight.

Know Your Hitch Receiver and Ball Sizes

Three components that determine the size of your trailer hitch ball are:

  • The trailer ball hole diameter
  • Your coupler size
  • Your Ford Transit’s towing capacity

Most trailers become unstable because the hitch ball is smaller than the coupler socket. Once you hit a bump or slam your brakes in an emergency, the coupler will come off.

Have a hitch that fits well into your coupler to prevent such a scenario.

Furthermore, you can’t upgrade your hitching system to accommodate a higher towing capacity than your van’s rating.

If your Transit Cargo Van has a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds, installing an 8,000 pounds rated hitching system won’t work. You will damage your van.

Similarly, installing a 2,000 pounds rated hitching system on your Ford Transit with a 6,500-pound towing capacity limits the van to tow a maximum of 2,000 pounds.

Additionally, it’s safe to tow lighter trailers with higher-rated hitching systems. All Ford Transit vans use the Class 3 2-inch hitching systems that accommodate Gross Trailer Weights (GTW) of up to 8,000 pounds.

Your ball and coupler must fit in and be capable of sustaining the trailer’s load.

Also, ensure that your hitch ball shank diameter fits perfectly into the hitch ball mount of your Transit van. Its length should be enough to allow you to see more than two threads when you’ve installed the hitch ball, and the nut tightened.

Doing so provides extra safety since nuts tend to untighten while driving through rough terrain.

Load Heavier Cargo at the Front of Trailer

Load your trailer in a way that not only improves your driving experience but also lowers the strain the cargo trailer places on your van.

To get a 10 percent tongue weight, an excellent way to place your cargo is to have the heavier load on the front of the trailer.

Do so on the condition that it doesn’t exceed 60% of your total cargo weight. Distribute the heavier cargo close to the trailer axles while placing the lighter items at the back of the van.

Since you might not want to load your trailer to capacity, a payload of 80% is acceptable.

Furthermore, balance the load from side to side to improve stability and reduce uneven tire wear.

Ensure that you strap and secure the cargo using tie-downs as freely-moving cargo negatively affects the trailer’s stability.

How To Safely Tow With Your Ford Transit

Once you’ve set up your trailer and van accordingly, your driving experience and safety are paramount. Therefore, in addition to what we’ve covered, here are a few tips that I usually use to tow safely.

  • Have a second set of eyes to spot you while hooking up your trailer

All Ford Transit vans have reversing/backup cameras that make hooking up your trailer to your van’s hitch a very smooth process.

If you’re uncertain while reversing, you might misjudge the distance between the trailer and your van.

Even with the advancement in backup camera technology, having someone spot and direct you is always the better option.

  • Cross your trailer safety chains underneath the hitch and coupler

Safety chains are chains that you connect manually from your trailer’s tongue to your van.

It’s a requirement that you cross your trailer’s safety chains so that they can still hold your trailer’s tongue in the case of a hitch ball or coupler failure.

And as rare as it may seem, hitch ball and coupler failures do happen.

  • Get proper tow mirrors

It’s a law that you have to be able to see the car behind you while towing.

If you’re pulling an RV, the chances are that your stock mirrors won’t allow you to see a vehicle that’s directly behind you.

To avoid cases of blind spots behind your trailer, install appropriate tow mirrors on both sides of your van.

  • Take wide turns while cornering

Depending on your experience and the number of turns you have to make before reaching your destination, taking corners while towing may be a bit scary.

Remember that your trailer will take a shorter distance around a corner than your van. If you take a sharp corner, your trailer’s tires will track closer to the edge or even overrun a curb or ram into a pole.

  • Give yourself three to four car lengths as your braking distance

In most scenarios, you might find yourself towing a trailer that has cargo equivalent to your van’s weight. The added weight slows down your van’s acceleration and braking significantly.

As a result, increase your braking distance to three or four car lengths and even longer in winter or rainy conditions.

To be safer and brake smoothly, use tow trailers with electric braking systems as you can easily integrate them into the Ford Transit braking system.

  • Avoid driving with cruise control in hilly areas

When heavily loaded, turn off your van’s cruise control as it may turn off automatically.

The same applies to driving in rainy and slippery conditions. Moisture affects cruise control sensors hindering your van’s ability to maintain a constant speed.

Your van’s performance reduces when towing a trailer and even more when towing a trailer in high altitudes.

To achieve a driving performance that’s desirable with the sea level drivetrain performance as the reference, reduce your van’s GCWR and GVWR by two percent for every 1,000 feet elevation.

  • Check your trailer’s tire pressures and tighten nuts before towing

Inflate your trailer tires according to the manufacturer’s manual.

Underinflated tires cause a lot of friction between the rubber and the tarmac leading to overheating or tire blowout.

Overinflated tires provide insufficient grip, and your trailer may begin to sway.

  • Drive 5 to 10 mph below the speed limits

Speed limits apply to a wide range of vehicles on the road. Most of these vehicles are lighter, accelerate faster, and handle better than a towing van.

The best speed to drive a van towing a trailer is 5 to 10 mph below the speed limit. For most states, this speed is around 55 mph on urban interstates.

Conclusion

Be very vigilant on the road while towing a trailer. Always drive within the speed limits keeping a reasonable distance between you and the vehicle ahead.

And if you’re driving on a windy or a rainy day, and you realize that your trailer starts swaying uncontrollably, it’s safer to pull aside.

Wait for the storm or wind to pass and resume your journey.

When driving, never forget that you’re towing a trailer, especially while overtaking. You need to factor in your trailer in your calculations.

Can A Ford Transit Tow A Travel Trailer?

  • July 25, 2023
  • 5th Wheels/Travel Trailers Transit

Being able to tow a travel trailer behind you on the road opens up more travel possibilities. Whether camping or glamping, having a smaller home on wheels is a great way to see the country. If you are considering a Ford Transit van for travel, you'll want to know if this popular model can tow anything behind it. We researched the Transit from several official sources, so that you'll know for sure before you hit the road.

The Ford Transit van can tow a travel trailer. However, the maximum weight of the trailer that can be towed will vary by trim level, engine size, and other factors. The cargo van can tow between 4,700 pounds and 6,900 pounds, the crew van can tow between 4,300 pounds and 6,500 pounds, and the passenger van can tow between 3,800 pounds and 4,500 pounds.

Examples of popular travel trailers that the Ford Transit could tow are:

  • Tax Outdoors Cricket

Forrest River R-Pod 171

Airstream basecamp, winnebago micro minnie, happier camper hc1, safari condo alto.

Now that we know a Ford Transit can tow a travel trailer, we'll look deeper into what it takes to use this van to tow one. We'll also be taking a much closer inspection into the towing capacity of each style of Transit. You might also be curious as to what other vans could tow a trailer behind it. Read ahead in this post to see what our research has uncovered.

Towing with your Ford Transit van

As you probably noticed earlier in this post, the towing capacity of the Ford Transit widely varies. The wheelbase is an important factor that comes into play here. Another consideration is whether or not your Transit model is all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. We'll break down those ranges a bit further here. The numbers below reflect Ford Transit vans that are equipped with the tow package.

Wheelbase, engine choice, and AWD vs. RWD

The Transit has three basic types of van offered to drivers; the cargo van, the crew van, and the passenger van. Each is available in 150, 250, and 350 trim levels.

Years ago, the differences in trim level meant a difference in payload capacity. In more recent years, including the 2022 models, the payload capacities are the same across all trims. The major differences from one trim level to the next are the van's overall height, an AWD option, and a slight difference in GVWR.

Ford Transit Cargo Van

This model van is built to carry cargo only. The cargo van only has two seats, one for the driver and one for a front passenger. The cargo hold has 280.9 cubic feet of storage. Elongated models are available for a larger cargo capacity.

The maximum towing capacities are:

  • Cargo Van 3.5L PFDI V6 129.9 wheelbase - 6,100 pounds (AWD)/6,400 pounds (RWD)
  • Cargo Van 3.5L PFDI V6 147.6 wheelbase - 6,000 pounds (AWD)/6,200 pounds (RWD)
  • Cargo Van 3.5L Ecoboost V6 129.9 wheelbase - 6,600 pounds (AWD)/6,900 pounds (RWD)
  • Cargo Van 3.5L Ecoboost V6 147.6 wheelbase - 6,500 pounds (AWD)/6,800 pounds (RWD)

Ford Transit Crew Van

The Transit crew van can hold up to five occupants. The front will carry the driver and a single passenger, while the second row of seating will accommodate three more. This second row of seating is removable.

Should it be removed, the cargo capacity is 280.9 cubic feet. With the second row in place, the cargo capacity is reduced to 248.7. Like the cargo van, the crew van is available in elongated models.

  • Crew Van 3.5L PFDI V6 129.9 wheelbase - 5,800 pounds (AWD)/6,000 pounds (RWD)
  • Crew Van 3.5L PFDI V6 147.6 wheelbase - 5,700 pounds (AWD)/5,900 pounds (RWD)
  • Crew Van 3.5L Ecoboost V6 129.9 wheelbase - 6,300 pounds (AWD)/6,500 pounds (RWD)
  • Crew Van 3.5L Ecoboost V6 147.6 wheelbase - 6,200 pounds (AWD)/6,400 pounds (RWD)

Ford Transit Passenger Van

A white Ford Transit parked on the side of a building, Do Ford Transit Seats Fold Flat? Are They Removable?

The passenger van is built to carry up to 15 occupants, including the driver. The seats can be removed and configured in multiple ways, offering a lot of flexibility when carrying a combination of passengers and cargo. With all of the seats in place, this van has 39.1 cubic feet of cargo room.

  • Passenger Van 3.5L PFDI V6 129.9 wheelbase - 4,400 pounds (AWD)/4,600 pounds (RWD)
  • Passenger Van 3.5L PFDI V6 147.6 wheelbase - 4,100 pounds (AWD)/4,500 pounds (RWD)
  • Passenger Van 3.5L Ecoboost V6 147.6 wheelbase - 4,300 pounds (AWD)/4,500 pounds (RWD)

A full set of specs for each Ford Transit Van can be found on Ford's official website.

Towing Package for Transit

No matter the trim level of Transit that you choose, you'll want to consider the towing package. This option will equip your van with a rear backup camera, blind spot information system, advanced track stability, and sway controls. This makes traveling so much easier and safer when you decide to trailer something with your Transit.

While consumers use many popular brands for trailering, one of the most reliable hitch options on the market is the Curt 14012 Class 4 Trailer hitch.

No matter your wheelbase or configuration, it's important to know your gross combined weight rating (GCWR). This is the total weight of the loaded towing vehicle; your Transit's curb weight plus the weight of everyone and everything on board, combined with the weight that is being towed.

Never exceed this weight! Doing so will be put the safety of your passengers and those you share the road with at great risk. Exceeding this weight will also damage your Transit van. Please refer to your owner's manual for more information, or visit Ford's official Transit webpage.

Taxa Outdoors Cricket

This small travel trailer has a dry weight of 1,800 pounds. Small but comfortable, the Cricket will sleep two adults and two children. The pop-up roof design makes it more aerodynamic and gives great protection. It comes equipped with a 5,000 BTU air conditioner.

The 171 model weighs 2,500 pounds, making it fall well under the max towing weight of any Transit van. At 18 feet long, this trailer comes with a queen bed, a dinette set, and plenty of storage space.

This model travel trailer from Airstream has four different floor plans to choose from. Each plan has a bathroom and kitchen, as well as a dining area. The main living space converts into a bedroom.

Depending upon the configuration you choose, it will sleep up to four. The Basecamp is 16 feet to 20 feet long and has a dry weight range of 2,650 pounds to 3,500 pounds.

This popular travel trailer from Winnebago comes with 10 different floor plan options. Depending on the option selected, your travel trailer can sleep anywhere from three to five adults. The weight will depend upon the floor plan, the lightest being 3,280 pounds, the heaviest weighing 4,540 pounds.

The solar power ready HC1 is compact, lightweight, and will sleep up to five people. Its low dry weight makes it able to be towed with most vehicles. At 13 feet long and only 1,100 pounds, the HC1 is one of the smallest on the market today.

The craftsmanship and durability speak for themselves, however. This model has a proven track record for micro travel trailer enthusiasts and has been a great seller.

Finally, we are looking at the Safari Condo Alto . Made from lightweight aluminum, this travel trailer is durable. The retractable roof makes it more aerodynamic than many other models on the market.

This travel trailer can sleep three to four adults, depending upon configuration. The Safari Condo Alto weighs in at just under 1,800 pounds with a dining area and an onboard bathroom.

What vans can pull a travel trailer?

Should you be looking at other model vehicles to tow a travel trailer, we've listed some of the more popular ones here. While each model has unique designs and different onboard equipment, each is capable of safely towing your family's travel trailer on the road.

The Chevy Trax has a relatively low gross vehicle weight rating, at only 4,387 pounds. Therefore, you'd need a fairly lightweight travel trailer hitched to this van.

Chevrolet Trax in the dunes

Dodge Ram Promaster

The Promaster from Dodge has a much higher towing capacity than the above mentioned Chevy Trax. This full-sized van is capable of towing up to 5,100 pounds. Doing so would require the full towing package.

Ram 1500 ProMaster display at a Chrysler dealership. The subsidiaries of FCA are Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram.

The Mercedes Sprinter is capable of towing up to 7,500 pounds. This popular passenger van is durable, reliable, and will seat up to twelve passengers.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Tourer stopped on the street. On the back of the car we see the harbor. This car is one of the most popular commercial vehicles in Europe.

Similar to the Mercedes Sprinter, Nissan's popular Nevada model is a tough passenger van. Seating up to 12 passengers in multiple seating configurations, this van can tow a sizable amount of weight behind it. Depending on the engine you equip it with, the NV can tow up to 8,700 pounds.

Nissan e-NV200 light full electric commercial vehicle. The e-NV200 is an all-electric car, that produces no tailpipe pollution or greenhouse gas emissions.

Vans from all makes are capable of towing your family's travel trailer behind it. Knowing what your vehicle's towing limitations are is vital information. Before even purchasing a travel trailer, you should be fully aware of how much your vehicle can safely tow.

This will help you narrow down your choice of a travel trailer. And be certain to have read both your vehicle's owner's manual and the manual that accompanies your travel trailer before you set out on your trip. Drive safely!

Red Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck towing a trailer on a dirt trail.

Ford F-150 Lightning Towing Is More Than a Driving Range Challenge

Is the Ford F-150 Lighting a good truck for towing? Aside from the electric driving range woes, what challenges occur while towing? This electric Ford truck might be useful for around-town driving without a trailer. Hooking up a travel trailer could lead to an entirely different story. Let’s explore.

Campgrounds don’t like the Ford F-150 Lightning?

Pulling a travel trailer to a campground might not be the joy you want it to be when the tow vehicle is this electric Ford truck. Many campgrounds don’t provide 240-volt hookups at campsites because most travel trailers don’t need more than 120-volt hookups. Some campsites disallow electric vehicle charging at their locations. This means EV owners must find a nearby charging station to top off their batteries.

Hills could be a serious problem

Jason Gonderman, writer and photographer for MotorTrend , took a Ford F-150 Lightning for a weekend adventure to a Southern California campground. When faced with what should be a relatively easy hill, Gonderman reported issues maintaining speed with this truck. Considering this truck struggled to handle a 4% grade that only rises to about 800 feet above sea level, this might not be the right truck for more difficult hill and mountain roads.

Many charging stations aren’t spacious enough for a truck and trailer

Pulling into a charging station can be an adventure if you’re towing a large travel trailer with an electric truck. Gas stations are set up to allow vehicles to pull in next to a pump. Unfortunately, many charging stations require vehicles to pull in, similar to parking in a spot with the charger in front. This means the trailer will stick into the road or be in the way.

Topping off could require some truck owners to unhook the trailer, charge up, and then hook up again. This is a lot more work than most people want to face during what should be a relaxing weekend getaway.

The Pro Power Onboard system is a fantastic Ford F-150 Lightning feature

Despite the challenges of towing with an electric truck, the Pro Power Onboard provides more power to a travel trailer than necessary. This means the trailer can be hooked up to the truck and enjoy plenty of power for all items without significantly depleting the truck’s batteries.

Should you tow a travel trailer with this electric truck?

If you want a truck to pull your travel trailer during many road trips, the Ford F-150 Lightning is not ready to meet this challenge. The driving range on a flat surface drops significantly. Once the truck begins towing, and driving up any incline is problematic. Driving range aside, these electric trucks present too many problems to be useful while towing a travel trailer to campgrounds separated by hundreds of miles.

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand

ford transit towing travel trailer

MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.

The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.

National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.

A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.

The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.

Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.
