This is an ancient salt mine converted into a stunning cathedral with a unique play of light and shadow located 180 meters under the earth which represents one of the most distinguished achievements of Colombian architecture, besides being truly a miners' faith. 

You’ll have a guided walk-through the Stations of the Cross (14 in total) which is a representation of Jesus' last steps, finishing at the Great Center Dome (a three-part cavernous subterranean cathedral) where the biggest underground salt cross is.

The translator spoke mixed English, and didn’t provide much information outside what the tour guide at the lake provided, which she translated for me. I wasn’t told what to expect or given much background for either the lake or the salt cathedral in advance. At the salt cathedral, she purchased my ticket and headset and sent me on my way. The salt Cathedral was amazing, but unless you are interested in native Colombian mythology, I would skip the lake. Most of the day was spent in the car… 1.5 hours to the lake, 1.5 hours to the salt Cathedral, and 1.5 hours back to Bogotá. I would recommend paying attention to the weather, and possibly pack a change of clothes/shoes. You may get very muddy on the 4-wheelers, (especially if it rains). Our tour included a van from the hotel, English guide, entry to the Salt Cathedral and a reservation at Andres de Carne (cost of dinner not included). The van was comfortable and the guide was very friendly. The tour did not include a guide in the salt cathedral itself. You have the option of inviting your guide to dinner with you, with the understanding that you'd pay for their dinner. We tipped 50M pesos each for the driver and guide. You could probably book a car directly for less.

Had a great experience - driver was an EXCELLENT DJ and played great tunes the whole way. My guide showed me around the Zipaquira square, got me set up with an English tour inside the salt cathedral, met me after and joined me for dinner at Andres Carne de Res. The restaurant was so playful and fun, go with an open mind and ready to dance. Food was great, with tons of options for every taste. Highly recommend!

The translator spoke mixed English, and didn’t provide much information outside what the tour guide at the lake provided, which she translated for me. I wasn’t told what to expect or given much background for either the lake or the salt cathedral in advance. At the salt cathedral, she purchased my ticket and headset and sent me on my way. The salt Cathedral was amazing, but unless you are interested in native Colombian mythology, I would skip the lake. Most of the day was spent in the car… 1.5 hours to the lake, 1.5 hours to the salt Cathedral, and 1.5 hours back to Bogotá. Laura was our guide Laura our your guide was perfect, fun, understanding and caring. When one of our group fell behind she made sure they were taken care of. The Terracotta house was really cool, and the 4-wheeler tour was AMAZING! Villa de Leyva was beautiful, and lunch was delicious. I would recommend paying attention to the weather, and possibly pack a change of clothes/shoes. You may get very muddy on the 4-wheelers, (especially if it rains). She was able to translate everything the main guide was saying in Spanish for me and made the facts fun!
