Four Roses Distillery

Spanish mission-style architecture is rare in Kentucky, making Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Ky., an interesting departure from the traditional bourbon distillery. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Four Roses is the only distillery that combines five proprietary yeast strains with two separate mash bills to produce 10 distinct recipes.

The Four Roses Distillery Tour

Full tours are currently being offered at the newly renovated Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, giving you a look behind the scenes of the historic facility. Tours of their Cox’s Creek unique single-story warehouse and bottling facility also are available.

The Bourbon Tastings

Built in 1910, the historic venue crafts Four Roses Yellow Label, Four Roses Small Batch, Four Roses Single Barrel and the new Four Roses Small Batch Select. You’ll sample three during your tasting — perhaps in the outdoor gazebo if it’s sunny! The tasting includes a complimentary Four Roses bourbon glass.

Four Roses Bourbon Distillery Tour and Tasting: A Must-Have Kentucky Bourbon Experience

Disclosure: This guide to visiting Four Roses Bourbon Distillery in Kentucky contains some affiliate links. When you click on one of these links and make a purchase or book your lodging, I may earn a commission. As always, I only recommend products and services I have or would use myself.

It wouldn’t be a proper visit to Kentucky without touring a bourbon distillery. And, if you are of legal drinking age, drinking the bourbon is a must, too!

That is why, when I visited Kentucky for the first time, visiting Four Roses Bourbon distillery was on my itinerary. As you read on, you’ll see why the Four Roses Distillery tour and guided bourbon tastings (for visitors age 21 and older) are must-have Kentucky Bourbon Trail® experiences.

Where is Four Roses Distillery?

Located on the banks of the Salt River in the Kentucky countryside, Four Roses’ Lawrenceburg distillery is about 25 miles from Lexington and less than 60 miles from Louisville .

Whether you are visiting from either of Kentucky’s two largest cities, Four Roses Distillery is ideally positioned for bourbon-tasting excursions and day trips .

How do I visit Four Roses Distillery?

You can book a Four Roses tour or bourbon tasting experience ahead of time online to visit on your own.

However, if your group plans to indulge in the bourbon and/or visit multiple distilleries in one day, taking a Kentucky bourbon distillery tour may be best. These guided tours usually include the distillery tour admission costs and private transportation from your hotel. For example, this Bourbon Trail tour from Louisville stops at Four Roses and two other renowned Kentucky bourbon distilleries.

Additionally, the historic Four Roses Bourbon distillery is part of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail ® experience. Therefore, bourbon-sipping visitors will earn a stamp in their Kentucky Bourbon Trail® passport when they visit the Four Roses distillery.

Touring Four Roses Bourbon Distillery

Your tour will begin at the newly expanded Four Roses Visitor Center. Before or after your tour, you can explore exhibits about the brand’s history and bourbons, shop for souvenirs, or sip a cocktail at Bar 1888.

When I toured Four Roses Distillery in 2014, the experience began with a video about how Four Roses makes its bourbons. Then it was time to see the distilling process in action!

Back then, the tour’s first stop was the historic distillery erected in 1910. I have to admit the Spanish Mission-style architecture was not what I expected to see at a bourbon distillery in the heart of Kentucky, and this unique building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic Four Roses Bourbon Distillery's Spanish Mission-style architecture

During our tour, I learned about the components used in making bourbon, the distilling process, and the difference between bourbon and whiskey. I even tasted the corn mash. It’s not awful to taste, but trying mash once is enough for a lifetime. Personally, I prefer bourbon in its finished form. 😉

Bourbon fermenter at Four Roses Distillery

It’s important to note that a good portion of the tour is outside, so you’ll want to dress accordingly. However, even on chilly days, you’ll warm right up inside the distillery — and later by drinking bourbon.

The History of Four Roses

Perhaps more interesting than the bourbon-distilling process was the history of Four Roses. I particularly enjoyed the story of how Four Roses founder Paul Jones, Jr. named his company. I don’t want to ruin the surprise should you plan to tour Four Roses someday. Let’s just say, Jones’s story is a tale of his two loves — bourbon and a Southern belle.

Also interesting was the change of ownership over the years. In 2002, Japanese company Kirin Brewing Company acquired Four Roses. Since then, Kirin Brewing Co. has made Four Roses’ Kentucky bourbon popular again in both the European and Japanese markets. It also returned Four Roses to the United States after former-owner Seagram stopped selling the brand in the US decades ago.

Whether you take the Distillery Legacy Tour , do a Taste of History guided tasting , or explore the brand exhibits inside the visitor center, you are sure to learn fun factoids about this legendary Kentucky bourbon!

Tasting Four Roses Bourbon

Three Four Roses bourbon bottles lined up for a bourbon tasting

Following the 50-minute distillery tour, we sampled several of the award-winning Four Roses bourbons during a guided tasting. After tasting the Small Batch and Single Barrel bourbons, I noticed my preference for smoother blends that gently warmed my palate.

The bourbons we tasted are meant to be consumed neat, on the rocks, or with a splash of water. However, many folks in Kentucky love their mint juleps, especially during the Kentucky Derby. If you like mint juleps, you’ll definitely want to check out the Four Roses gift shop.

Four Roses gift shop

Personally, I still prefer my whiskeys and bourbons in a well-mixed cocktail. Luckily, visitors can now enjoy cocktails and bourbon pours at Bar 1888 inside the Four Roses Visitor Center.

Four Roses Distillery Review

Four Roses Bourbon isn’t as well known as brands like Maker’s Mark, Bulleit, or Wild Turkey. However, Four Roses still commands a place among the most widely enjoyed bourbon brands in the world. Four Roses’ base offerings are a step above many of the other mass-market whiskeys. For this reason, visiting Four Roses is a great stop on any Whiskey Trail Itinerary . The following is a review of a visit to the Four Roses Distillery.

four roses tour cost

As with many of the historic Kentucky distilleries, Four Roses began under another name. The Old Prentice Distillery was founded in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky in 1910. The builders of the original distillery created the buildings in a Spanish Mission-style. Unfortunately, there are varied accounts of the founding of Old Prentice Distillery. Some accounts state that Paul Jones, Jr. is the founder of the brand, while others reference Rufus Mathewson Rose. In the end, the owners sold the brand so many times that the lineage isn’t important.

Seagram’s bought the Four Roses brand in 1943. In a push for profits and to elevate the brand, Seagram’s discontinued Four Roses in the United States in the 1950s. They did this because they chose to focus on Asian and European markets. Therefore, for most of the lifetimes of people currently living, customers could not buy Four Roses in the US. It wasn’t until 1995 that Four Roses returned to sale in the US. Since 1995, the most well-known products from Four Roses include the name-sake label, Small Batch, Single Barrel, and Small Batch Select.

Tour, Tasting, or Something Else?

Four Roses offers both tours and tasting experiences out of the visitor’s center at their distillery. Four Roses operates a separate warehouse and bottling facility in Cox Creek, Kentucky (a little closer to Louisville). The warehouse and bottling facility has some different tour and tasting options than the distillery. The obvious differences between the two are the main subject of the tours: distilling vs bottling. What follows is a review of the options available at the distillery.

The visitor’s center serves as the first point of entry for all guests wanting to go on a tour or tasting. Four Roses recently renovated the visitor center to provide a great introduction to the brand. As with most visitor’s centers, there is a large selection of merchandise and product on display. Visitors are able to purchase Four Roses items as well as some whiskeys that are harder to find outside the distillery.

Check-in for all the tours and tastings is done in the visitor’s center. Four Roses will accept walk-ins for the tours, but most times there won’t be any spaces available. For that reason, it is recommended that visitors obtain reservations in advance.

four roses tour cost

The standard tour at Four Roses is called the Distillery Legacy Tour. This is one of the tours that I recommend guests take. The grounds of Four Roses are completely walkable without a tour. That means that guests are able to enjoy the Spanish Mission-style architecture without paying a tour fee. However, you aren’t able to go inside the distillery. That is the reason to pay for the tour (in addition to the tasting included at the end).

The tour will take visitors into the distillery to see the process from grain grinding to cooking the grain to the doubler and then to fermentation. While this distillery will feel somewhat industrial, it will also feel smaller than many others (like Wild Turkey or Bulleit). Some of the fermentation vats are still made of cypress at Four Roses which is something visitors are able to get up close to.

The tour ends with the same bourbon tasting that visitors get if they book the tasting alone. This means that the tour is longer than the tasting at 1 hour and 15 minutes compared to the 30 minutes of the standard tasting. It is also a few dollars more at $22 per person. However, in the end, I think the extra time and little cost is well worth doing the tour here.

four roses tour cost

Four Roses conducts tastings in a glass-enclosed room that sits off from the main merchandise section of the visitor’s center. Unfortunately, this doesn’t provide any great views (like Wild Turkey provides from their tasting room). Actually, it sort of makes those enjoying the tasting on display for the visitors out in the visitor’s center. This is probably a marketing choice by Four Roses; however, it still diminishes the experience a little.

During the tasting, guests have the opportunity to sample the four recipes that Four Roses is famous for. These include the namesake Four Roses, Small Batch, Single Barrel, and Small Batch Select. Guests sit four to a table at small high-top tables. I personally would have preferred more room as there wasn’t a lot of space at the tables. It was just my wife and I at a four-seat table when we visited, and I still am saying this. I wouldn’t have wanted to have four people pushed together unless they were part of our group.

The tasting guide did a good job explaining the different mash bills and yeasts that Four Roses uses. They combine ten different recipes into the various bottlings of their whiskeys. If you pay close attention during the discussion on the recipes, visitors will learn the codes that identify the different recipes. This knowledge is useful in understanding what the flavor profile of a specific bottle would be in a store by reading the code on the label.

At the end of the day, the whiskey tasting at Four Roses was good but not great. The delicious bourbon is hard to savor in 30 minutes; the experience felt rushed. The tasting costs $16 per person. While this isn’t a bad price, the best value is to do the tour and tasting together. As long as you have the time to spend (and I recommend that you make the time), this is a much better value for your investment in both cost and time. Finally, at the end of the tasting, all guests get to take home an etched Four Roses glass.

four roses tour cost

Something Else

At various times of the year, special tours or tastings are offered. This doesn’t regularly happen so I won’t spend much time writing about it. However, keep an eye on the Four Roses reservations page to see if something is coming up that interests you. For example, at the current time, the special event is a Single Barrel Tasting Experience. This provides guests the opportunity to taste bourbon from single barrels to get greater exposure to each of the mash bills and recipes that Four Roses uses.

Despite looking at this in September, the only available time for this tour is the last weekend of November and first three weekends of December. These aren’t exactly prime times to visit the whiskey country of Kentucky so take factors like this into account when looking to book something. Personally, I would just stick to the normal tour unless something really special aligned with the time I was going to be there.

four roses tour cost

Reservation Process

Four Roses makes their reservations available online on their website: https://fourrosesbourbon.com/visit/ . As with most distilleries, it is advantageous to book your reservations early. As an example, at the time of writing, there are only four days in the next month that have availability for two people to go on the tour. All except for one of these days have only one time slot available. Waiting till the last minute really limits your tour options. Two months out has more, but still spotty, availability. Three to four months out seems to be the point at which tours are available for booking most days of the week.

four roses tour cost

The basic tours and tastings at Four Roses are well-priced. While they aren’t free like Buffalo Trace, they are very competitive in the landscape of Kentucky distillery tours. First, a tasting cost $16 per person. This isn’t a bad cost, but I don’t consider it to be the best value at Four Roses. The tours are the best value in my opinion. The 1-hour and 15-minute tour and tasting experience will cost participants $22 each. It will be hard to beat the tour and whiskey that you get for this price. Therefore, I would almost always recommend going for the distillery tour when visiting Four Roses.

Four Rose Distillery Tour

Although apprenshive about the Four Roses Brand of old, we were advised to visit the distillery by a competitor of theirs. With new owners who are obviously attentive to detail, the tour was quite informative and instructive. The guide was congenial and knowledgeable. The Spanish motiff on the structures was very refreshing from the surrounding Kentucky countryside.

My husband and I stopped here on the Bourbon Trail on Labor Day weekend. I felt herded through this distillery. Everything thing we were told by the guide seemed to be told roboticly. I will say that it was very hot and they were busy. So we did try to overlook it. The bourbon could not be overlooked. It was just fair. I was disappointed in the bourbon. Others might like it better then we did. It is still Kentucky Bourbon. The architecture of the buildings was pleasing to the eye. There was not a cost to this tour. The shopping area was very small with very little to buy. I hope this will turn out better for others. Cheers!

Having completed the Kentucky Bourbon Trail I now feel well armed to discuss and give my opinion of the 6 distilleries that are currently on the trail. (As well as one that is no longer on the trail but I went there anyway) Four roses is possibly one of the coolest looking distilleries in kentucky. (Not counting the crumbling Old Taylor Distillery which IS the coolest looking but, long since closed) With the yellow stucco exterior, heavy timber beams and a clay tile roof you might think your standing down the road from the alamo rather than in central Kentucky. The tour isn't terrible but I felt it was lacking. This tour does include the distillery and mash fermentation areas however the machinery is so loud in these areas it is very hard to hear the tour guide unless you are right next to him. Also you don't get to see their aging warehouses or bottling because they are located off site. I actually take that back, you CAN see their warehouses but they are on a seperate, appointment only, tour down in Clermont KY. The warehouses you will see across the street from Four Roses actually belong to Wild Turkey and hold their bourbon. Since the bourbon isn't here, the bottling isn't either. Four Roses does give you the most variety of bourbons to taste. I believe it was 4 different varieties. I will probably visit this one again.

Four Roses offers a great tour of the distillary. Very close up and informative with free tastings at the end. If you are interested in learning the history, producing of, and have a taste of good boubon this tour fits the bill. Only draw back on this one is the storgage barns are off site so your unable to see them.

Sure it's a free tour, and you get to taste some bourbon, but overall it's not nearly as nice as Heaven Hill or Makers Mark. The tour was crowded, and very hard to hear. Plus, the bourbon wasn't very smooth. If you are in the area, stop in. But don't go out of your way.

four roses tour cost

I was unimpressed with the Four Roses tour. I was really looking forward to this tour as it’s not available around us. They were not distilling when we were there. They were shut down for summer like a lot of the distilleries do. The tour started with a movie. They showed us the distillery even though it wasn’t in production. They only distill on the property. They don’t have a warehouse or do any bottling. So the tour was kind of lame. If you’re pressed for time, skip this one. The building itself was pretty but not worth the drive. It was kind of out of place too.

FOUR ROSES TOUR & TASTING

I’ve written about Four Roses before . It is a true success story: if you work hard and produce a great and unique product, people will notice. It is one of those brands that, while not on the forefront of many in the bourbon community, does produce consistent quality product with a unique taste profile. I confess that I’m one of those, as time and time again, I’ll grab a bottle, enjoy a pour, and then remark, “ Why don’t I keep that around a little more often? ”.

four roses tour cost

Belle of the Ball

The Four Roses name is founded on the legend of Paul Jones Jr. In his youth, he was captivated by the beauty of a Southern belle. When he proposed to her, he instructed her that if her answer was “yes”, she should wear a corsage of roses during the grand ball. When they met at the grand ball, Jones’s belle was wearing a corsage of, not one rose, but four red roses – hence the legend was born. As his bourbon business boomed, his passion for bourbon was equal only to his passion for his Southern belle. Honest! You can’t make this stuff up!

The rise and fall and rise of four roses

You’ll recall that today, Four Roses is owned by Kirin – the Japanese spirits juggernaut. Seven decades ago, it was completely different. The facts get a little cloudy, but we know that Paul Jones Jr. set up offices in 1884 on “Whiskey Row” in downtown Louisville. By 1888, he had trademarked the name Four Roses, though his production history went back to the 1860s. In 1922, Frankfort Distilling Company purchased the company. This was one of the few companies to continue to sell medicinal whiskey during Prohibition.

In 1943, Seagram purchased Frankfort Distilling, gaining the rights to what was then one of the most revered bourbon names in the industry – Four Roses. While Four Roses was the top selling bourbon during the 1930s – 1950s in America, Seagram decided to move the brand overseas to the rapidly expanding markets in Europe and Asia.

By the 1960s, the Four Roses brand in the United States was a shadow of its former glory – left with a blended bourbon and grain-neutral spirit combination. It wasn’t until the 1970s and 1980s that master distiller Jim Rutledge started working to return Four Roses to its former glory.

In 2002, Kirin Brewery of Japan acquired Four Roses. Shortly thereafter, Four Roses bourbons returned to shelves across America. Jim Rutledge was replaced by Brent Elliott as master distiller in 2015 and is featured several times in the movie “ Neat ”.

The tour begins in the newly built visitors center, bedecked with tons of Four Roses product and regalia. Following a brief video on the history of Four Roses and its operations, the tour travels down to the 1910 Spanish Mission-style distillery that looks more appropriate for a Napa Valley winery than a Lawrenceburg, KY distillery. After stepping inside, with the sights, sounds, and smells, you’ll know you’re definitely in a distillery.

four roses tour cost

Signs along the walkways let you know what’s happening – from cooker, to mashtubs, to the copper column still. A set of stairs lead to a scenic overlook of the 23 fermenters/mashtubs Four Roses utilizes to make their product. Note: this makes a great spot for a well-posed selfie or couples’ shot. The oldest tanks are made from Red Cyprus (now on the endangered list), with newer ones made from Douglas Fir or stainless steel.

Following distillation, the distillate is piped outside into storage tanks. There, they are trucked an hour away to the warehouses at Cox’s Creek where they are barreled and allowed to quietly age in one-story warehouses before being bottled. You may start your tour at either the Lawrenceburg distillery or the Cox’s Creek warehouse location. Either way – hang onto your tour ticket, as it’s good for several months to visit the other site.

four roses tour cost

All too quickly our tour ended, and we headed back to the Visitor’s Center for our tastings. Here’s where things can get a little complicated. Many distilleries retain a limited number of mashbills (e.g. such as Buffalo Trace has 3 main mashbills – a low-rye, higher-rye, and wheated) and utilize various warehouses and locations to slightly alter the taste of the finished product.

Four Roses takes this concept to a new level. The finished products can be a blend of two mash bills: Mashbill “E” = 75% corn, 20% rye, and 5% malted barley, and Mashbill “B” = 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley.

The mash bills are also married to different 5 different yeast strains: K – spicy, full bodied Q – slightly fruity, spicy, medium bodied O – floral (rose petal), spicy, medium bodied F – herbal V – delicate fruit, spicy and creamy

The tasting room displays a placard that indicates “2+5=10” denoting that with the 2 mashbills, and 5 yeast strains, 10 distinct bourbons are created and used in various fashions for the finished product.

The Tasting

Four Roses shared 4 unique bourbons with us – the standard Four Roses “Yellow” Label (now a tan label), Small Batch, Single Barrel, and the newest addition – Small Batch Select.

Four Roses “Yellow” [Tan] Label

Carries no age statement but is thought to be around 5+ years old. It is bottled at a low 80 proof. It is a blend of all 10 recipes, with batch sizes ranging from 200-400 barrels. The average age is around 5 ½ years, though barrels typically range from 4-12 years.

Eye : Light in color – like an herbal tea.

Nose : There is fruit and floral – like peach or apple blossoms.

Palate : This is soft and pleasant, with more fruits and floral. It’s very well balanced with none overpowering the other.

Finish : Like biting into a honeycrisp apple – crisp with fruit characteristics. It doesn’t stick around long but is soft and followed by a little spice.

Overall : This is a really nicely made everyday bourbon. Comfortable neat or in a cocktail, it’s like slipping into a pair of well-worn slippers after a long day. I like this but wish it had just a smidge more proof to hold up to an ice ball.

Four Roses Small Batch

Carries no age statement but is thought to be around 6-7 years and is made from batches of around 250 barrels. It is bottled at 90 proof and is a blend of 4 select bourbons: OBSK, OESK, OBSO, and OESO. The first letter – O – denotes the Four Roses production facility.

The second letter denotes the mashbill – E or B. The third letter is always S and denotes “straight whiskey”. The fourth letter denotes the yeast strain – for small batch this is K and O yeast strains.

Eye : medium copper.

Nose : wood and oak with some light floral notes, stone fruits, and caramel.

Palate : Oak, spice, more fruit and a rich creamy mouthfeel.

Finish : Smooth and mellow with caramel, fruit, and a dry oaky spice.

Overall : This is exceptionally smooth with a balanced profile. This is one that I need to keep around a little more often!

Carries no age statement but is thought to be around 6-7 years and is made from batches of around 250 barrels. It is bottled at 100 proof and is from a single recipe – OBSV – the higher rye mashbill with the fruity, spicy and creamy yeast profile.

Eye : amber.

Nose : delicate flowers along with rich vanilla – floral and light.

Palate : Plenty of rye spice followed by honey sweetness and some peach oak, and caramel notes. This will coat your entire tongue., spice, more fruit and a rich creamy mouthfeel.

Overall : This is one of my favorite FR expressions.

Four Roses Small Batch Select

Carries no age statement, but is a blend of 6-7 year-old barrels. It is bottled at 104 proof. The mashbill varies, including the 75% corn/ 20% rye /5% barley and the 60% corn/35% rye/5% barley bills. Price is around $60.

Eye : Medium-reddish copper.

Nose : Different and yet similar to the other FR products. There are floral notes, but more fruity – like peach or apple blossoms.

Palate : Loads of baking spices, including clove and nutmeg, yet also traditional flavors of vanilla and caramel. It has a lovely rich and creamy sensation.

Finish : Medium-long with spice, oak, subtle fruits and even a bit of mint. This is very well done and hats off to Master Distiller Brent Elliott on an exceptional blend of sensations that, while is in the Four Roses “vein”, is also uniquely distinct.

Four Roses is a brand I enjoy having on hand. Our tour guide was great and the facility was top notch (be sure to check out the bow tie collection!). It’s not always in the cabinet, but I certainly enjoy it when it is. It carries a fine character and is very well balanced. The fruity, floral notes are a unique one that sets Four Roses apart from many of the competitors.

Incredible Tour at Four Roses Distillery

One of the best distillery tours starting with an excellent short video and then moving through the distillery itself (you will need to climb narrow steps). Guide, Derrick, was excellent and knowledgeable and the tasting was fantastic. You even get to keep your glass! Well worth the $5 tour cost as Four Roses is consistently a great bourbon buy. A don't-miss-it distillery on the bourbon trail from their distinctive architecture to their well-organized tour and visitor's center.

Although we only visited three of the distilleries on the Bourbon Trail, this was definitely our favorite! The staff was wonderful (particularly Heather!) in helping me keep the surprise for my husband birthday (they put us in the media room first to wait till all our friends had arrived so he wouldn't know!). It was a nice, small business were they made you feel welcomed and wasn't nearly as "touristy" as Woodford Reserve. You get nice headsets so you can actually here what your tour guide is saying which was helpful in the loud production areas. Heather was our tour guide and she had a great sense of humor and made the experience a lot fun!!

First, the grounds were beautiful! It really reminded me of Temecula, CA. Absolutely beautiful! Our tour guide, Kendall, was very knowledgable and obviously loved her job. I couldn't have asked for a better guide through the distillery. The entire tour was great. I loved how they used the headsets, that really helped us to hear everything and get all of the interesting information. Also, the price of the tour was amazing. Only $5 per person and you receive a free glass at the end. WELL WORTH IT! I'd never drank Four Roses before, but there will be a place made in my whiskey collection for a bottle. We will be retuning with family! Thank you so much for a very nice visit, Four Roses.

Spent a day touring Bourbon Distilleries in Kentucky, and Four Roses was a favorite of the group. The guide was humorous, yet informative, and the tour went right to the heart of the distillery. Walking among the fermentation tanks was incredible. Finally, the tasting was more like doing shots, and the opportunity to keep the glass made the $5 tour charge trivial. Loved the tour. Love Four Roses Bourbon.

Another stop on the Bourbon Trail and this was a great place. The visitor center was beautiful, very friendly staff and nice gift options. The tour started with an interesting video, 45 minutes touring the facility. Up front and personal through the plant, the grounds were pretty for January, definitely go when the roses are blooming, it would look magnificent. The bourbon was delicious, just like my old man drank 40 years ago!

The location is awesome! The grounds and the buildings are beautiful! The tour guide a was really nice and he was very knowledgeable. The bourbon tasting was awesome too. Not much I can really say bad about the place. If you are ever in the neighborhood, check it out.

FourRoses

Come for a visit as rich and flavorful as our Bourbon.

One trip to our historic distillery on the scenic Salt River in Lawrenceburg, or our unique single-story rack Warehouse and Bottling Facility nestled in the quiet Kentucky countryside in Cox’s Creek, and you’ll begin to understand how our Bourbon has come to be so mellow. Of course, being able to sample a taste of our award-winning Bourbons at each location makes a trio to these very mellow places all the more rewarding.

Love bourbon?  Come with me on my Kentucky Bourbon Trail Tour (plus my favorite off-trail distillery)!  The Bourbon Trail is easy to navigate and a fantastic getaway for bourbon lovers!

What Is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

If you, like me, enjoy tours of vineyards, distilleries, and breweries — listen up!

Most people know that the winery clusters in California, Italy, and France make for spectacular vineyard-hopping getaways.

But wine isn't the only beverage that has outstanding geographic regions! Major bourbon distilleries are also clustered together. These form the Kentucky Bourbon Trail , which has been growing by leaps and bounds in popularity recently.

Kentucky's native limestone rock makes bourbon production easier, and 95% of all bourbon is made in Kentucky.

A Kentucky Bourbon Trail Tour

As of 2024, the Bourbon Trail has EIGHTEEN official stops.

There are dozens more small distilleries on the " Craft Tour ," including Whiskey Thief , James E. Pepper , and Log Still .

Here are some tips to help you plan a visit through nine distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and one that's off-trail!

What else is nearby?  While you're visiting Kentucky, make sure to go hiking at Natural Bridge near Lexington! If you're exploring during early summer, check out Woodstock Lavender Company near Somerset.

Bourbon Trail Tours: Are They Expensive?

Tours, as of early 2024, run in the $15 to $30 range per person. Specialty tours and tastings cost more.

If you're on a tight budget, I recommend visiting Buffalo Trace . They're off the official trail, but they had a fantastic tour.

How Long Do the Bourbon Tours Take?

Most tours are around an hour and tend to run on a set schedule.

Online reservations are highly recommended (and sometimes required).

Long row of bourbon barrels stacked inside rickhouse.

How Many Distilleries Can I Tour in One Day?

Plan on doing 1-3 distilleries per day, since most of them require some driving to get to.

What's the Best Time + Day for a Kentucky Bourbon Trail Tour?

The best bourbon tours I've had, with smaller crowds, have been on weekdays. Especially the first tour of the day .

Whatever you do, remember that the first weekend in May is Derby Weekend .

If you plan your trip then, be prepared for major crowds . Book your hotel FAR in advance, and call the distilleries ahead to find out what their touring schedule is for that weekend.

Keep in mind that distilleries can get quite warm in some sections, and so a mid-summer tour could potentially be a bit uncomfortable if you're sensitive to heat.

How Much Bourbon Will I Get to Taste on a Tour?

It depends on the distillery, but somewhere from 3 to 6 tastings. Kentucky law limits the amount they can give out.

Some of the tours give you loot in addition to the tastings.

You might get a bourbon ball candy , a souvenir glass , or even a bourbon bottle label .

Five bourbon glasses with sample pours.

Do I Have to Be 21 to Go on a Bourbon Trail Tour?

U.S. law says you have to be 21 to drink alcohol, so any tastings obviously require you to be old enough to drink.

Many distilleries do still allow underage people to tour, sometimes at a cheaper price. (They just aren't allowed to drink anything!)

Their websites will let you know for sure when you're booking a tour.

1. Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co./Town Branch (Lexington)

$13.78 per person tour and tasting.

Large stills at Town Branch Distillery.

The Town Branch distillery is small, but it's one of my favorite tasting experiences .

The short tour includes not only the distillery but also Lexington Brewing Co. across the street, where they make  Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale.

The tour includes four tokens that let you choose which drinks you want to sample, from both distillery and brewery drinks.

I’ve visited this distillery three times, and it’s still one of my favorites!

This is a nice stop if you’d like to shake up your bourbon experience with some  local brews .

2. Woodford Reserve (Versailles)

$32 per person tour and tasting ; $25 per person for tasting only ; specialty tours and tastings available.

Room full of copper mash cookers.

Woodford Reserve is like the country club on this distillery tour.

The distillery grounds are gorgeous, with  limestone buildings and lush green countryside .

The tour takes you through the large distilling area and the  rickhouses  (where they store the bourbon barrels).

At the end of our tour, we enjoyed four tastings and a bourbon ball. For a more detailed look at the tour, see our full guide to Woodford Reserve .

3. Wild Turkey (Lawrenceburg)

$11 per person.

Navigating the Kentucky Bourbon Trail- Tips and Advice

Note: As of early 2024, The Wild Turkey Visitor Center is temporarily closed for renovations. Tours and tastings are suspended, but y ou can still make purchases at the Station Master’s House gift shop.

The Wild Turkey Distillery is surrounded by beautiful Kentucky countryside.

The tour includes  four samples , and we went home with an extremely  high-quality, heavy-bottomed tasting glass .

As for the tour itself, we had bad timing – a Saturday afternoon in August, just as university students came back into town.

Our tour group was huge, and the tour guide was pretty soft-spoken with a broken microphone.

I’d definitely recommend heading to this extra-popular spot on a weekday morning.

I’ll be back, Wild Turkey!

4. Four Roses Distillery (Lawrenceburg)

$22 per person tour and tasting; $16 for tasting only.

Navigating the Kentucky Bourbon Trail- Tips and Advice

The Four Roses Distillery , unlike most Bourbon Trail stops, doesn’t actually age ANY of their bourbon at this location.

This location distills the grains, and then they’re aged at the Four Roses Warehouse.  So you'll see the distilling vats, but not any rickhouses or aging barrels.

We were able to sample  three bourbons and keep the tasting glass .

Four Roses Warehouse

$22 per person tour and tasting; $16 per person for tasting only.

The Four Roses warehouse is where Four Roses ages all their bourbon.

It’s located near the Jim Beam distillery.

We opted for a 30-minute tasting here, which included three bourbons and the tasting glass.  It was short, sweet, and a nice side trip while we waited for our Jim Beam tour.

5. Maker's Mark (Loretto)

$26 per person tour and tasting; specialty tours available.

Metal barrel sculpture saying "Maker's 46" in front of distillery building.

In my opinion, Maker’s Mark was  one of the best tours of the actual distilling process . Here is a more in-depth post on the tour .

Our tour included a walk-through of the large distillery area, a chance to  taste the mash of fermenting grains , a view of the production line, a bottle label, four tastings, and a chance to  hand-dip a bourbon bottle in their signature red wax .

Quick Tips: This is one of the most popular spots on the Bourbon Trail – if you can go on a weekday morning, I’d recommend it.  I also recommend checking the Maker’s Mark website for directions, because our GPS took us the wrong way.

6. Heaven Hill (Bardstown)

Tasting $18; specialty tastings available.

Heaven Hill does not have an on-site distillery, but you can learn about the history of Heaven Hill, see the on-site rickhouse, and (obviously) have a bourbon tasting.

On a recent visit , we decided to go for the  connoisseur  experience. It included a brief video "tour", five tastings and a bourbon ball.

This stop was really just a tasting and not a full tour, and we were only there about 30 minutes.

7. Jim Beam (Clermont)

$28 per person tour and tasting; specialty tastings available.

The Jim Beam Distillery was one of the most well-run, informative tours on the trail.

If it's been a while since you've visited, know that Jim Beam has opened an expanded visitor center, with new tasting rooms and a restaurant!

The tour included their distillery and rickhouses, a chance to  taste the mash of fermenting grains , and a chance to  smell or taste undiluted bourbon straight from the barrel .

We could also clean an empty bourbon bottle (by washing it with bourbon, of course) , set it on the bottling line, and then add the wax seal, if purchasing a bottle.

Jim Beam definitely had  the most tasting options — including their classic bourbons, single barrel bourbons, and flavored whiskeys.

The  tasting glass  is included in the tour price.

8. Bulleit (Shelbyville)

$25 per person tour and tasting; $20 per person for tasting only ; specialty workshops available.

We went to the Bulleit Distillery on a Monday morning, and had a tiny tour group and a fantastic tour!

The most enjoyable part (other than sampling four bourbons) was listening to the guide tell us about the history of the bourbon industry .

I’d highly recommend this tour!

9. Evan Williams (Louisville)

$18 per person tour and tasting; specialty tours available.

Evan Williams provides the  most unique Bourbon Trail tour I’ve been on .

There’s no large distillery on site, and you only get a brief glimpse of the small artisan distillery.  Even so, it's an enjoyable, incredibly interesting tour.

The entire tour felt like walking through an  interactive play, with rooms turned into reproductions of old Evan Williams buildings and historical Louisville .  A lot of the tour was via videos shown as the guide led you from room to room.

The tasting included  three bourbons and a bourbon ball .

The Speakeasy experience was sold out when we got there, but seemed similar to the Heaven Hill connoisseur tour (which makes sense, because Heaven Hill is the parent company for Evan Williams).

You’ll see a lot of the same bourbons available to buy at both locations.

New Distilleries on the Bourbon Trail

So much for the nine original distilleries on the Bourbon Trail!

Before we get to my favorite off-trail experience, here's a round-up of the newest distilleries that have been added to the official trail in the past few years.

Michter's (Louisville)

$25 tour and tasting at Fort Nelson Distillery, specialty tours available.

Stitzel-Weller (Louisville)

$25 tour and tasting; specialty tastings and classes available.

Old Forester (Louisville)

$32 tour and tasting; specialty tour available.

Rabbit Hole Distillery (Louisville)

$25 tour and tasting.

Angels Envy (Louisville)

$25 tour and tasting; specialty tours and tastings available.

Bardstown Bourbon Company (Bardstown)

$22 tour and tasting; specialty tours, tastings and classes available.

Specialty tastings and programs available at new Louisville tasting room.

Lux Row Distillers (Bardstown)

Complementary rickhouse tour and tasting; specialty tour and tasting available.

Wilderness Trail (Danville)

$15 tour and tasting.

Green River (Owensboro)

$20 tour and tasting; $12 tasting ; specialty tour and tasting available.

10. Off-Trail: Buffalo Trace (Frankfort)

Buffalo Trace Distillery Grounds

While I was researching the Bourbon Trail, one distillery kept popping up – the  Buffalo Trace Distillery .  It wasn’t on the trail, but it did look exciting!

I contacted Buffalo Trace, and they had me over for a tour and for one of their über fancy  Craftsman Dinners .

It’s in an incredibly nice area downtown, perfect for strolling and visiting local shops.

All the tours at Buffalo Trace are – get this – FREE!

And of course, you get to sample a few spirits, and Buffalo Trace’s version of Irish cream.  (Faaaabulous!)

Complementary tours and tastings in this day and age almost seem too good to be true — but it IS true, and that's why the Buffalo Trace calendar books up ridiculously quickly when a new month's worth of tours are released. If you're not able to snag a spot, you can go on the waitlist.

What Tours Does Buffalo Trace Offer?

Buffalo Trace has THE BEST tour variety of any other distillery we visited.

They have a standard Trace tour, a Hard Hat tour, a Historic Landmark tour, and the Old Taylor tour.

We did the Old Taylor tour, which included a tour of the archaeological ruins of an old bourbon distillery!  It was – without question – the most unique distillery tour I’ve been on!

I will be back, Buffalo Trace!   I’ve got my eye on the hard hat tour!

Sarah -- I had no idea they gave tours of the distilleries in Kentucky, but now that I know, it's a destination spot for me. My extended family is from Martinique in the Lesser Antilles and it's where the acclaimed Rhum Agricole is distilled. We were there a few years ago and did rum tours for a solid week. It was so much fun. I would love to experience this tour -- and the countryside looks beautiful!

February 19, 2018 at 9:30 am

Ooo rum tours in the islands sounds amazing! And yes!!! Come on over and tour the distilleries here- it’s so much fun! (And I’m partial but I’ll agree that the countryside is gorgeous ????????)

How fun is this?? Hubby really enjoys bourbon and I do too! The prices for the tours are really reasonable too ????

February 21, 2018 at 10:33 am

Such a very informative item you did here Sarah. My husband and I love bourbon from time to time, especially Four Roses, we would love to visit the distillery. The surrounding countryside looks beautiful too, seems like a wonderful journey to make.

February 24, 2018 at 10:16 am

This has always been on my bucket list, and someday it will happen, right?! Thanks for sharing all this information, and I will be keeping it it mind for when we finally do go! Bourbon lovers unite!

March 21, 2018 at 9:48 am

Make it happen Leah!!! lol

February 25, 2018 at 6:14 am

I haven't heard of this before. It sounds fantastic. I'm with you on the hard hat tour. Exploring is probably my favorite thing to do of all time so if it requires a hard hat, I'm there. Do you go underground for that tour?

Holy cow, I had no idea the Kentucky bourbon trail existed. I mean I knew you could tour some distilleries but I didn't know there were several! This would be a fabulous, romantic trip for my husband and I (we love brewery tours) and we have always wanted to go to Kentucky and check out the scenery, eats and people! Thanks for planning out next vacation!

February 26, 2018 at 10:16 am

I had no idea that 95% of bourbon was produced in Kentucky! That's kind of amazing! I think these kinds of tours, especially being able to see behind-the-scenes, are a great experience and so fascinating to learn about. Especially since the bourbon production must have significantly shaped the culture of the surrounding area! Love the pictures you shared!

February 27, 2018 at 9:15 am

I have wanted to do this for SO long! This is such a fantastic guide and I'll definitely be referencing it when I finally plan my trip. I can't believe how affordable it is, too! I assumed the tours and tastings would be much more expensive. I absolutely love that little perk at Maker's Mark where you can have your name engraved in a barrel. How fun is that?!

March 21, 2018 at 9:46 am

It's super fun! We signed up for the barrel engraving.. but I have no idea how many years I have to wait LOL

March 13, 2019 at 12:20 pm

Hi there - Handful of questions: What did you do for transportation? Did you hire a driver? Where did you stay? Any recommendations? And do you have any more recommendations on where to eat? Thanks!

March 13, 2019 at 3:42 pm

Great questions!! I'll see if I can help 😀 1- We drove. They don't give you more than maybe one shot total (if that) at any of the distilleries (the samples are pretty small, maybe 1oz). Most of the distilleries have really pretty grounds or neat gift shops, so you could always walk around in there for a little while before driving again! 2- Most of the distilleries are nearby either Louisville or Lexington. Louisville has some really cool old (but expensive) hotels, like the Galt House, the Brown, and the Seelbach. If you're on a budget, I'd look for a deal on a hotel in Lexington for part of the time, and Louisville for other half of the distilleries. 3- It depends on what you're looking for! There's a little Korean place in Lexington that I LOVE (Han Woo Ri), but there's also some cool chef dinner experiences at a few of the distilleries (I know Maker's Mark and Buffalo Trace both do them).

I hope that helped a little!! Let me know if you've got more questions 🙂

March 14, 2019 at 5:58 pm

Thanks so much! I'm planning a big group trip for Memorial Day Weekend and these tips will go a long way as I narrow down our itinerary.

March 14, 2019 at 10:13 pm

Have fun!!! Try to book distillery tours online where they let you- that’ll be a busy weekend. Let me know if you have more questions!

A Quick Look at Four Roses Bourbon

Welcome to the express lane of our Four Roses bourbon tour! Here’s a quick snapshot to get you revved up before we delve into the nitty-gritty:

Pros And Cons of Four Roses Bourbon

Four Roses bourbon is among the most popular Kentucky straight bourbon whiskeys, with its fair share of fans and critics. Here’s a table that summarizes its pros and cons:

What Is Four Roses Bourbon?

Four Roses is more than bourbon. It’s a love story aged to perfection, like a well-matured Kentucky straight. Its history dates back to 1888, when Paul Jones Jr. founded the brand. He named it after the corsage of four roses his love interest wore when she accepted his marriage proposal.

This whiskey weathered storms – Prohibition, World War II, ownership changes – and emerged as a global sensation, especially in Europe and Asia, with a cult following in Japan. It was reintroduced to the US market in 2002 after being discontinued for several decades.

The secret to Four Roses’ allure is its complex recipe featuring 10 distinct bourbon formulas , each with its own mash bill and yeast strain. As a result, we get to taste a symphony of flavors — caramel, vanilla, and whispers of oak, honey, and citrus. It’s got this perfect balance of amber hues and lingering essence that deliver unparalleled warmth and sweetness.

Neat, on the rocks, or in a creative concoction — this Hall of Fame bourbon is a classic and versatile spirit that’s sure to please, sip after sip.

Is Four Roses Bourbon Real Liquor?

Absolutely; Four Roses bourbon is as genuine as its rich history. Since 1888, it has navigated through time, emerging resilient against various challenges. Meeting all the criteria for an authentic Kentucky straight bourbon, Four Roses stands proudly in the whiskey family, leaving no room for skepticism.

What Does Four Roses Bourbon Taste Like?

Four Roses bourbon is a complex and flavorful whiskey with much to offer. As you approach a glass of Four Roses, the aroma unfolds with a delicate mix of floral essences, spice, and a whisper of honey.

Dive into the sip, and you’ll find the honey taking the spotlight, weaving a velvety sweetness into the experience. The finish? It’s a smooth, prolonged affair that leaves a pleasant impression.

What Is the Alcohol Content in Four Roses Bourbon?

Here’s a quick overview of the alcohol content of Four Roses based on its four primary expressions:

  • Four Roses Bourbon : 80 proof, or 40% alcohol by volume (ABV).
  • Four Roses Small Batch : 90 proof, or 45% alcohol by volume (ABV).
  • Four Roses Single Barrel : 100 proof, or 50% alcohol by volume (ABV).
  • Four Roses Small Batch Select : 104 proof, or 52% alcohol by volume (ABV).

These are the regular bottlings of Four Roses bourbon sold in the US, Europe, and Japan. Keep in mind that limited editions may have different proofs and ABVs.

Is Four Roses Bourbon Good?

In the world of bourbon, Four Roses is among the top-tier choices. It delivers rich flavor, versatility, and quality, all at an affordable price. Whether you’re a seasoned sipper or a whiskey newcomer, it’s a fair pick, especially if you prefer a smoother taste and less alcohol content.

Is Four Roses Bourbon the Best Liquor?

Declaring a single liquor as the “absolute best” is a near-impossible feat. Four Roses bourbon is undoubtedly a commendable choice, but it’s not the lone star in the whiskey galaxy. It brings its unique charm to the table, appealing to diverse tastes and occasions.

Yet, like any whiskey, it has its nuances. The sweeter notes might be intense for some, and expressions like the Single Barrel and the Small Batch Select can be pricier and less accessible.

How Is Four Roses Bourbon Packaged?

Four Roses exudes classic elegance, packaged in a distinctive glass bottle with a round base, long neck, and a touch of a curve. The bottle features an engraved rose cluster on the cork — a nod to its rich history — topped with a wooden cap and cork finish. The label, with a bright, gilded border, contrasts beautifully with the deep bourbon hue.

How Should You Drink Four Roses Bourbon?

There are various ways to enjoy this exquisite spirit. It’s best enjoyed neat, preferably at room temperature. For a refreshing twist, add a couple of ice cubes to your glass — perfect for warm evenings or when you’re in the mood for a more relaxed sip.

Four Roses Bourbon plays exceptionally well in both classic and modern cocktails, such as the old-fashioned, mint julep, and whiskey sour, to name a few. In fact, the distillery has shared several cocktail recipes for you to try out. You can pair it with food and use it for baking and cooking.

How Much Does Four Roses Bourbon Cost?

The price of Four Roses bourbon depends on the type, availability of the bottle, the retailer or the bar, and their location. In general, the cost range for a 750ml bottle is as follows:

  • Four Roses Bourbon : $20 to $30
  • Four Roses Small Batch : $30 to $35
  • Four Roses Single Barrel : $35 to $40
  • Four Roses Small Batch Select : $40 to $60

If you intend to try it out in a bar or restaurant, expect to pay around $10 to $15 per serving. Also, remember that limited-edition and seasonal expressions of Four Roses can be more expensive.

Official Website

Four Roses Bourbon is the company’s entry level bourbon, and is made by blending all ten of their unique bourbon recipes consisting of two different mashbills and five different yeast strains. Formerly referred to as Four Roses “Yellow Label” Bourbon because the label had yellow coloration, Four Roses updated the bottle design changing it to a more beige color scheme in the late 2010s. The signature of Four Roses’ current master distiller, Brent Elliot, is featured prominently on the front label.

The nose has a gentle composition highlighted by floral and light fruit notes. Dried apricot, light peach, citrus blossom, and lavender are most prominent. There is a touch of light spice that’s also present, along with just a hint of fresh oak. Light and well constructed, the overall aroma does a good job setting up the sip to follow.

Spice amplifies at the onset, but stays within expectations for an 80 proof bourbon. Floral flavors create a general base, while apricot and peach pull through against a faint oaky caramel note. The mouthfeel is adequate, and spice increases on the backend. Straightforward and nicely composed, the palate’s light, fruity-floral flavors ultimately define it.

Spice settles in and mellows as the finish progresses, allowing the fruit and floral flavors to continue as the highlight of the sip, though they fade against light brown sugar and the persistent yet mellowing spice. While the finish offers a low level of intensity and makes little effort to leave a lasting impression, it’s an adequate cap on the sip and surprisingly lasts longer than expected.

Four Roses uses two different mashbills and five different yeast strains to create ten different bourbon recipes . Their standard 100 proof Single Barrel Bourbon uses one recipe, their standard Small Batch blends together four of the recipes, and Small Batch Select blends together six of the recipes. Limited releases and private selections can vary from the standard products, but generally maintain the same number of recipes as their standard counterpart. To create Four Roses Bourbon, all ten of the recipes are normally blended together. However there are occasions when not all ten recipes are used. The Q yeast strain is described as having an essence of floral aromas, of which there are two Q recipes, OESQ and OBSQ (one corresponding to each mashbill), which are considered “flavoring recipes.” These recipes make up a small portion of Four Roses’ overall production and consequently a small portion of their standard Four Roses Bourbon blend, typically ranging from 1.5-3.5%. When supplies are short and the desired flavor profile has already been achieved, Four Roses may forgo one or both of these additional flavoring recipes in the blend. As a result the particular blend of bourbon will include as few as eight, but as many as all 10 of the Four Roses recipes depending on the batch. Notably, the bottle never discloses how many recipes were used for the particular blend being bottled. While it might seem like the inclusion of up to 10 different component bourbons would create a blend that’s highly complex or even disjointed, the opposite holds true for this product. Four Roses Bourbon is laser-focused on being finely tuned as opposed to overtly impressive. The inclusion of 10 different components is intended to drive consistency, as creating bourbon is both an art and a science with no two barrels ever tasting exactly alike. The result is a bourbon that has a level of intensity you would expect for 80 proof, with somewhat muted flavors and with what certainly seems like less than it has the potential for. But also one that uniquely accents fruit and floral notes as opposed to the more common caramel and vanilla. This is a change from a lot of 80ish proof bourbons from major Kentucky distilleries, including Evan Williams “Black Label” Bourbon , Jim Beam “White Label” Bourbon , Wild Turkey Bourbon , and Old Grand-Dad Bourbon , to name a few.

Four Roses Bourbon is intended to provide value to consumers, and that value is even more pronounced today than it was even just a few years ago. Aged for five years and then meticulously created from a blend of up to 10 component bourbons, makes the bourbon’s value even more notable. It’s in line with other value-focused bourbons from major Kentucky distilleries such as Wild Turkey Bourbon and Old Grand-Dad Bourbon, and changes up the flavor profile enough to provide something that’s attractive to someone seeking a more fruit and floral forward pour. It’s also in line within its own lineup, with Four Roses Small Batch coming in at around $33, Four Roses Single Barrel around $50, and Four Roses Small Batch Select around $55 - each stepping up the proof and neat-sipping quality accordingly. Put simply, $20 for such a carefully curated 5-year-old Kentucky bourbon is a really good deal in today’s marketplace.

The entry-level bourbon in the company’s lineup, laser-focus on being approachable and finely tuned as opposed to overtly impressive, defines what it means to be a Four Roses Bourbon.

Four Roses Bourbon is a masterpiece in blending, but ultimately a very ho-hum bourbon in the end. That is exactly what it’s supposed to be. It’s an approachable bourbon, but lacks excitement offered by the higher proofed (and priced) bourbons in the company’s lineup, as would be expected. It’s a common bourbon to find at bars and events, and one that can be sipped neat, on the rocks, or used in a cocktail. While it probably won’t impress you in any of those formats, it won’t offend you either. With so many new bourbons in the marketplace, it’s refreshing to revisit this carefully curated blend from time to time. In fact, after not having it for years, I was surprised at the long term consistency maintained by both its flavor profile and price. At $20, it’s a bourbon that deserves its place amongst other low proof bargain-focused bourbons from Kentucky majors, and serves the purpose Four Roses is ultimately striving for.

Four Roses Price Guide

four roses bottles

The Name “Four Roses”

As legend has it, Paul Jones, Jr., the founder of Four Roses Bourbon, fell in love with a beautiful Southern belle and sent her a proposal. She stated that if her answer were “yes” she would wear a corsage of roses to the grand ball. Upon her arrival her gown was adorned with a beautiful corsage of four red roses. Thus the name “Four Roses” was paying homage to the lovely belle.

History of Four Roses Bourbon

Paul Jones Jr. began making whiskey in the 1860’s and moved his flourishing business to “Whiskey Row,” a section of Main Street in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1884. In 1922, the Paul Jones Company would purchase the Frankfort Distilling Company which would then be purchased by Seagram 21 years later. Even though at the time, Four Roses was one of the most popular brands of whiskey, Seagram stopped selling Four Roses in the United States and focused on European and Asian markets where sales were rapidly growing.

In 1966, Jim Rutledge joined the company and set out on his mission of returning Four Roses to the US. Jim became one of the world’s most notable Master Distillers and in February 2002 the Kirin Brewery Company, Ltd. purchased the Four Roses Bourbon brand and its production facilities reopening sales across the States. In 2005 Brent Elliott began working and studying under Rutledge. After 10 years it was time for Jim to retire and Brent to hold the title he still has today of Four Roses Master Distiller.

Four Roses Products

Four Roses Distillery produces three labels that are always available. They include their base or entry level bourbon which is sometimes referred to as “Yellow Label,” a small batch bourbon, and a single barrel bourbon. In select stores and states you can find their Small Batch Select and in an even more niche market you might find some of their Limited Edition Bourbons.

What Makes Four Roses Stand Out?

According to their website, and unique to their distillery, Four Roses combines two mash bills with five proprietary yeast strains to create ten different bourbon recipes. Then they mix and match allowing them to reach endless flavors to please many diverse palates. Let’s take a closer look at each of these beautiful brown libations.

Tasting Notes

Four roses bourbon.

A versatile yet sophisticated smooth, mellow bourbon with a long, soft finish. It is the most popular bourbon in Four Rose’ line up and is great for cocktails. When we tasted it, we got hints of apple and rich browned butter. On the palate, it is easy drinking with notes of vanilla, toasted oak and a touch of pineapple. You’d be hard pressed to find a better bourbon for the price! Widely available and very popular, you’ll see it on the shelves in most bars and liquor stores.

Four Roses Small Batch

This bourbon is a blend of four original bourbon recipes hand picked by their Master Distiller. It is rich amber in color and there are notes of baking spices and ripe, red raspberries and caramel on the nose. Light oak, vanilla, apricot and berries present themselves on the pleasant, lingering palate. You can find this bottle in many sophisticated watering holes and spirit shops.

Four Roses Single Barrel

With a high rye mash bill and 50% ABV, this premium, complex, savory, single barrel bourbon is surprisingly smooth. On the nose there is a delicate dried spice note followed by pear, maple syrup, vanilla and a touch of cocoa. The palate displays hints of ripe dark fruit with a rich and full body.

Four Roses Small Batch Select

To make this label, Master Distiller Brent Elliott selects and blends six bourbon recipes, each of which are aged six years. The select is non-chill filtered and the newest product in the permanent lineup. On the nose, you’ll find raspberries, clove and nutmeg followed by berries, oak and vanilla on the palate. The finish has a touch of spice and spearmint. Currently available in 30 states, be sure to check with your local watering holes to see if they have it in stock.

Limited Editions

Occasionally the Master Distiller will hand select a few remarkable barrels for these special releases. They are all barrel strength and non-chill filtered letting their true characteristics shine.   These are, as the name suggests, these bottles are sparse and so you might have to special order them or befriend your bartender to get the inside scoop on their release dates.

Here’s a run down of the limited editions listed on Four Rose’ website:

How much do Final Four tickets cost?

You could spend less than $100 on your ticket, depending on which game or games you go to.

There are different ways you can buy tickets for the Final Four; a semifinal pass – tickets to both Final Four games – or the all-session ticket – tickets to both Final Four games and the national championship game.

Tickets located close to the court or near the half-court line will typically be the most expensive tickets, TicketSmarter says.

The average ticket price for an all-session ticket is $844, according to TickPick , a near $800 drop from when the Elite Eight began.

How much does the cheapest Final Four ticket cost?

For semifinal tickets, the cheapest ticket can be found on Ticketmaster for $50, $59 with fees. Prices have continued to drop since the end of the Elite Eight.

Here are the cheapest tickets for the semifinal games on on the secondary market, as of Monday:

  • TicketSmarter : $65 ($84 with fees).
  • StubHub : $53 ($66 with fees).

  • Ticketmaster : $48 ($58 with fees).
  • SeatGeek : $54 ($78 with fees).
  • Vivid Seats : $52 (prices with fees unavailable).
  • TickPick : $68 with fees.

Will Final Four tickets get cheaper or more expensive?

Ticket prices have continued to drop since the Final Four field was set, likely because none of the teams are considered "blue bloods," and have smaller fan bases than previous Final Four qualifiers.

"There are many variables that affect the ticket prices," TicketSmarter says. "The location of the games, the number of games you wish to attend, the popularity of the teams playing, seating capacity and seat location are all factors that are taken into consideration."

Adam Budelli, spokesperson for StubHub, advises people interested in going to the Final Four to check the secondary market throughout the tournament, especially the week leading up to the Final Four.

"The NCAA is the most dynamic sporting event for tickets because of the number of games, early team exits, upsets, city destinations and short timeframe before the next round," Budelli said in a statement to USA TODAY. "The good news is that fans can find good prices if they pay attention to the market."

Gannett has a partnership with TicketSmarter that provides readers with access to tickets through Gannett's websites, including USA TODAY.com.

People pay a $200K initiation fee and $15K a year to join the Aman Club, the most expensive private members' club in NYC. Take a peek inside.

  • Interest in private members' clubs has soared in the US with the rise of remote working.
  • In New York, the most exclusive and expensive is the Aman Club, which opened in 2022.
  • Look around the ultra-luxury club that members pay a $200K initiation fee and $15K a year to join.

Insider Today

In an era where working from home is the overwhelming first choice in the US but where people still crave community, it's no wonder many are reporting a rise in interest in private members' clubs .

These clubs are not a new phenomenon in the US. In New York alone, the first opened their doors in the Gilded Age . Unsurprisingly, members were often men with deep pockets.

Fast-forward to 2024, and most private members' clubs in the city are gender-inclusive. But it still doesn't hurt to have money.

Soho House and Zero Bond are among the most popular clubs in New York. Members are charged upwards of $5,000 and $3,000, respectively.

But that's nothing compared to what members pay to join the Aman Club — a private members' club opened by the ultra-luxury hospitality resort chain of the same name in 2022.

Here's a sneak peek inside.

The club is situated within the Aman Hotel on Fifth Avenue.

The Aman in NYC is in The Crown Building on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street. The hotel is located within a building that has long been a fixture in midtown Manhattan.

It's over 100 years old, comprised of 26 stories, and screams luxury with its golden ornamental facade.

Besides the 83 suites and 22 private residences, two lounges are dedicated to club members.

Joining the Aman Club comes at a steep price. Members pay a $200,000 initiation fee and an annual recurring fee of $15,000.

Let's not beat around the bush: ultra-luxury comes at a price. How much, you ask? Well, a representative of the Aman Club told Business Insider that the global membership includes annual dues of $15,000 and an initiation fee of $200,000.

If it's any consolation, members can also "add up to four additional family members as registered members to enjoy the Aman Club membership benefits," a representative told the New York Post .

In 2019, Aman Resorts CEO Vlad Doronin told Bloomberg the membership grants access to two bars, restaurants, a private wine library, the cigar terrace, a subterranean jazz club, and the wellness area.

Amenities include the 25,000-square-foot heated indoor swimming pool.

The pool, located within the three-story wellness center, is bordered by lounging areas and glass-covered fire pits.

Upstairs, a 7,000-square-foot garden terrace with panoramic city views is only accessible to members, hotel guests, and residents.

The expansive garden terrace has a retractable glass roof, meaning members, hotel guests, and residents can relax and dine there year-round.

They can also enjoy drinks at the corner bar, which overlooks Fifth Avenue and 57th Street.

Suites at the hotel start at around $3,200 a night.

A representative for the club declined to share whether members receive a discount on hotel suites when asked by BI.

However, Tatler Asia reported they have access to a "private office" — staff members available 24/7 to look after their personal and travel needs.

Members get a 10% discount on food and beverages at the four exclusive dining areas.

An Aman Club policy sheet reviewed by BI states that members can settle monthly bills from dining and drinking at the club through their "House Account." If they spend $10,000 in a month, the bill will automatically be processed with the credit card on file.

But there is a perk: members receive a 10% discount on food and nonalcoholic drinks at the four dining areas at the hotel.

These include Arva, an Italian restaurant; Nama, a Japanese restaurant with an omakase dining experience; the garden terrace; and the lounge bar.

Members use a digital card to access the club and other exclusive spaces, such as the 25,000-square-foot wellness area.

four roses tour cost

When they arrive at Aman New York, members use a digital club card to access the exclusive facilities — including the restaurants, terraces, lounges, and, of course, the three-story, 25,000-square-foot wellness area.

Within the space are several different facilities, including the indoor pool, two distinct spa houses, a fitness center, a yoga and pilates studio decked out with reformers, a cryotherapy chamber, an InfraRed zone, a hair salon, and a nail salon.

The wellness area offers treatments like custom IV drips, electrolyte therapy, and acne management services.

four roses tour cost

Aman Club members don't just have access to a spa with massages, saunas, hot tubs, and pools; they can also take advantage of an array of treatments offered within the wellness area by in-house doctors, though they still have to pay for it.

The website names a few of the "non-invasive treatments" available, including custom IV vitamin drips, electrolyte therapy, acne management, and microneedling.

Perhaps the best benefit of the Aman Club is that members likely rub shoulders with A-listers who can't get enough of the luxury hotel chain.

four roses tour cost

The Aman Club remains silent on how many members it has and their identities. But in 2022, The Times of London reported that there was talk that all 600 membership slots had been filled.

Taking photos and videos inside the club is forbidden. Still, given the price of joining, it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine that many of the members enjoying the swanky facilities are high profile in some way or another.

But even if a member isn't a celebrity, they'll likely brush shoulders with them.

BI previously reported that a few A-listers who have stayed at an Aman hotel include George and Amal Clooney, Bill Gates, and the Kardashians.
