Korn ferry tour player’s 57 breaks pga tour record, ties lowest pro tournament round ever.

When it comes to PGA Tour-sanctioned tournaments, no round has been lower than the one Cristobal del Solar put together on Thursday.

Del Solar, a 30-year-old from Vina del Mar, Chile, fired a 13-under 57 in the first round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Astara Golf Championship in Bogota, Colombia. The round, which was recorded with preferred lies in effect on a soggy Country Club de Bogota, marked the lowest round in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event and tied the lowest professional tournament round ever.

“I’m just so happy,” del Solar told GolfChannel.com over the phone just minutes after his round. “When you go out there, you don’t really think I’m going to shoot 57 today. ... Yeah, man, it was a good round.”

Understatement of the year.

Ireland’s David Carey shot 11-under 57 on the Alps Tour in 2019, though that course played to a par of 68.

Stephan Jaeger held the previous KFT record of 12-under 58, recorded at the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic. Five other 58s have been recorded on world-ranked tours – Jim Furyk (PGA Tour), Alex del Rey (Challenge), Ryo Ishikawa (Japan), S.H. Kim (Japan) and Jason Bohn (Canadian). Bryson DeChambeau had a 58 of his own last year at LIV Greenbrier.

Another Chilean, Joaquin Niemann, posted a 59 last week at LIV Mayakoba.

The Pacos Course at Country Club de Bogota played at 6,254 yards on Thursday. Bogota also sits around 8,600 feet above sea level. So, as one can imagine, del Solar’s short game was busy.

Del Solar’s record round featured a front-nine, 8-under 27, which tied the KFT nine-hole scoring record. He carded nine birdies, two eagles and zero bogeys or worse.

Here’s a closer look at his round:

• No. 1, Par 4, 383 yards – Birdie, hit drive to 20 yards, chipped to a foot

• No. 3, Par 4, 348 yards – Birdie, drove it greenside, about a pace off the left of the green, then lipped out chip

• No. 5, Par 4, 298 yards – Birdie, hit iron off tee and greenside, chipped to 4 feet

• No. 6, Par 4, 392 yards – Birdie, drove it about 30 yards short of green, chipped to 2 feet

• No. 7, Par 5, 516 yards – Birdie, hit driver and then 9-iron to 20 feet, two putts

• No. 8, Par 4, 364 yards – Birdie, drove it greenside off right of green, chipped to 8 feet

• No. 9, Par 4, 330 yards – Eagle, drove green from about 295 yards (adjusted) to 15 feet; “Shot of the day for me,” del Solar said.

“It was a great front nine,” he added. “I was obviously very excited, but I was trying to keep focused and not think of the score.”

• No. 10, par 4, 384 yards – Birdie, drove it greenside, chipped to 5 feet

• No. 12, Par 5, 550 yards – Eagle, hit driver and then 6-iron to 15 feet

• No. 14, Par 4, 411 yards – Birdie, drove it 80 yards short of green, wedged to 20 feet

• No. 15, Par 4, 360 yards – Birdie, drove it greenside, chipped to 5 feet

“After I hit my drive on 18, we were walking and I asked my caddie, ‘What are we at?’” del Solar said. “He looked at me and said, ‘I don’t know, look at the scorecard.’ I don’t know, man. I knew I was gonna break 60, but I didn’t know exactly.”

Del Solar had about 6 feet for birdie – and 56 – on the par-4 18th hole, but his putt burned the left edge.

When you casually two-putt for a 57. 🤷‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/rNzbcpp6gK — Korn Ferry Tour (@KornFerryTour) February 8, 2024

“I’ve never even broken 60 before,” del Solar said. “The course I play back home (Dye’s Preserve in Jupiter, Florida), it’s really hard, so when I play really good there, it’s 7 or 8 under, never near the 60 mark. ...

“Yes, the course is short, we are playing at altitude, but you still gotta be able to do it. You still gotta go out there and make birdies.”

Kris Ventura and Trevor Cone, del Solar’s playing competitors, shot 62 and 63, respectively. For those counting, that’s a combined 28 under by del Solar’s threesome.

Del Solar, who often practices with Niemann and shares a swing coach with the LIV star (Edo Miquel), has played mostly on PGA Tour Latinoamerica since turning pro in 2017 out of Florida State. He won four times on that circuit, including twice in 2022. He was a KFT rookie last season and entered this week No. 14 in points, boosted mainly by a solo fourth at the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic last month.

Now, after this record round, del Solar turns his sights toward a potential first KFT title.

He won’t, however, play the Pacos course again this week, with the par-71, 7,237-yard Lagos course, the sole layout for the final 36 holes, on tap for his second round.

“I’m just trying to do my routine, man,” del Solar said. “I know I just shot 57, an unbelievable round, but it’s the first day of the tournament. So, I’ll just try to move on, go to the gym and do what I do one a weekly basis.”

Meet mr. 57: get to know cristobal del solar, the record-setting player who shot a 57 on the korn ferry tour, share this article.

No matter the tour, sub-60 rounds are usually few and far between in professional golf. Last week Joaquin Niemann fired a 59 at LIV Golf Mayakoba. A day later Wyndham Clark shot a 60 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Cristobal Del Solar laughed at those rounds and said hold my scorecard on Thursday. The 30-year-old Chilean made history with a dazzling 13-under 57 during the opening round of the Astara Golf Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour at the Pacos Course at Country Club de Bogata to card the lowest score ever in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. It’s the first time in the history of professional golf that someone has shot 57 on a par-70 layout, and it’s the ninth sub-60 round on the Korn Ferry Tour . In 2019, David Carey shot 11-under 57 on the Alps Tour at the Cervino Open .

If you aren’t familiar with Del Solar, get to know Mr. 57 with some fun facts below.

Florida man by way of Chile

Del Solar was born in Chile but went on to graduate from the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, in 2012 before he attended Florida State to play on the golf team. He won once in college back in 2017 and was named to the All-ACC Team as a junior. Del Solar now resides in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Had 4 previous pro wins before his KFT triumph

In the early years of his pro career, Del Solar won four times on the PGA Tour Lationoamerica. His first win came at the 2018 Center Open before he added to his tally at the 2019 Puerto Plata Open, 2022 Volvo Golf Championship and 2022 Argentina Classic.

Considered a career in pro tennis before going with golf

Del Solar loves tennis, so much so that he considered a career in the sport. His favorite athlete? That’d be Roger Federer. He wants to trade places with the 20-time singles champion for a day to see “what it is like to be the greatest tennis player of all time.”

Golf history is in his blood

Del Solar’s cousin, Nicole Perrot, was the first Chilean-born player to win on the LPGA back in 2005.

Soon-to-be Girl Dad

Del Solar became engaged to his wife, Alexandra, back in 2020 and were married in 2022. The couple have struggled to conceive a child in the years since but received good news back in December of 2023.

“After over a year of trying to conceive with so many disappointments, tears, failed procedures, countless doctor visits, and hundreds of injections… we finally have our miracle baby! And she’s a GIRL! Science is cool. Our bodies are cool,” Alexandra wrote on Instagram . Their baby girl is due in June.

Walking down the 18th fairway in the opening round of the Korn Ferry Tour's Astara Golf Championship in Bogota, Colombia, on Thursday, Cristobal Del Solar wasn't sure of his score.

"What are we at?" Del Solar asked his caddie.

"I don't know, look at the scorecard," the caddie replied.

The 30-year-old from Chile ended up posting the lowest-ever score in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event with a 13-under 57. He made a two-putt par on the 18th hole, narrowly missing a 6-footer that would have given him a 56.

Del Solar carded nine birdies and two eagles during a bogey-free round. He opened with a front-nine 27 and had a 30 on the back.

Del Solar's round also tied for the lowest ever in a professional tournament; Ireland's David Carey posted an 11-under 57 on a par-68 course on the Alps Tour in 2019.

The conditions at the Pacos Course at Country Club de Bogota were ripe for a low score. The course is 6,254 yards and plays even shorter, as Bogota sits about 8,600 feet above sea level. Rain earlier in the week softened its greens. Players were allowed to lift, clean and place their balls under preferred lie rules because of soggy conditions.

"It was a very short course, I mean really short," Del Solar said in a video conference from Colombia. "[There were] a lot of holes that were drivable; I wouldn't say drivable, but within 20 yards of the green. I wouldn't necessarily get on the green, but I was around it. The course was definitely set up to shoot a low score.

"Now, when you go onto a course like this, you don't think, 'I'm going to shoot 57.' You just go out there and do your best and hope it's a really low score. You've still got to do it, obviously."

Germany's Stephan Jaeger held the previous KFT record of 12-under 58 at the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, California.

Jim Furyk recorded a 12-under 58 in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, the lowest score in PGA Tour history.

Bryson DeChambeau made four straight birdies to post a 12-under 58 at a LIV Golf League tournament at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, on Aug. 6.

Del Solar had a 4-stroke lead after his record-breaking round. He didn't plan to do much celebrating with 54 holes still to play in the tournament.

"Today's the first day of the tournament," he said. "I've to play again tomorrow. Hopefully by Sunday, I'll have also amazing news. Hopefully, I'll celebrate Sunday as well."

The former Florida State golfer turned pro in 2017 and won four times on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica circuit, including twice in 2022. He was a Korn Ferry Tour rookie last season and is 14th in points this season. He is ranked 259th in the world.

"I played really good last year and had really good finishes," Del Solar said. "It wasn't quite enough to get on the PGA Tour. That's where I want to be; that's one of my dreams. I think overall my consistency has improved the past couple of years. My technique has improved, and I've gotten stronger mentally."

After record-breaking 57, Korn Ferry pro makes tantalizing claim

Cristobal Del Solar poses with his record-setting scorecard.

Remember the days when breaking 60 was the ultimate golf milestone? Well, thanks to an epic round by Korn Ferry Tour player Cristobal Del Solar on Thursday, there’s a new standard in town.

Del Solar fired a 13-under 57 at Country Club de Bogota-Pacos in Bogota, Colombia, to take the first-round lead at the Korn Ferry’s Astara Golf Championship and become the first player ever to post a 57 in a PGA-Tour sanctioned event.

Del Solar got off to a fast start on what is an unusually short setup for a KFT event: a 6,254-yard par-70 at nearly 9,000 feet of elevation. He posted six birdies and an eagle to make the turn at 27 strokes — good enough to tie the Korn Ferry record for lowest nine-hole score. Del Solar kept the pedal down on the back with three more birdies and another eagle. He parred his final four holes to sign for the historic number.

Joaquin Niemann

LIV Golf’s Joaquin Niemann shoots a 59. Then came an epic admission

Before Del Solar’s round, there had been two 58s posted at PGA Tour-sanctioned tournaments, both in 2016: Stephan Jaeger was the first to shoot the number at the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae, and Jim Furyk followed soon after, signing for 58 in the final round of the Travelers Championship. Twelve players in all have broken 60 in PGA Tour-sanctioned events, and on the LIV tour, which is only its third season, players already have shot a 58 and 59.

During a post-round virtual press conference, Del Solar acknowledged that the course was gettable. His 57 leads the field only by four with three rounds remaining. On Thursday, there also were two 61s and eight 62s. In addition to the short setup and balls carrying at elevation, thanks to recent rain, the greens were soft; the field also played preferred lies. Del Solar said the longest club he had into a green was a 6-iron — on a par-5.

“The course was definitely set up to shoot a very low score,” Del Solar said. “The pins were tucked, but the greens were so soft that I could just hit driver just as close as I can to the green, and if you’re chipping it well, then you’re gonna get it close because the ball will stop near the hole.”

Still, you have to hit the shots. And Del Solar had to execute every drive, approach, chip and putt all the way to 57. It’s common in golf to feel as though you left a few out there, no matter what you shoot. Did Del Solar think his score could have been any lower? On the front: no, he said. But there were instances on the back — a lipped 6-footer on 18, for example, that led Del Solar to believe that his score could have been even better.

“I would say around three missed opportunities that could have been a potentially even greater round,” he said.

A 54?! Maybe there’s hope for that perfect score yet.

Palm Beach Gardens golfer Cristobal Del Solar still getting messages about record-setting 57

It has been more than a month since Palm Beach Gardens resident Cristobal Del Solar shot a 57 — the lowest round ever in professional golf — and he’s still getting messages.

By the day, by the hour.

“I’ve gotten more than 4,000 of them from everywhere, even people in Canada,” said Del Solar, a native of Chile. “I’m like, ‘I don’t know who you are, but thanks!’”

Such is life for Mr. 57, a sobriquet never mentioned at golf’s highest level. Life has changed immensely since Feb. 8 when Del Solar had a morning tee time in the first round of the Astara Golf Championship in Bogota, Colombia, on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Del Solar birdied six of his first eight holes on the par-70, 6,254-yard course before he drove the par-4 ninth hole for an eagle to make the turn in an eye-popping 27. He then birdied No. 10, eagled the par-5 12 th  and added birdies at the 14 th  and 15 th  holes before finishing with three pars for a back-nine 30.

It added up to a 13-under 57 — much to his surprise.

“I honestly didn’t know where I was at,” Del Solar said. “I didn’t know I was 13-(under), maybe 12- or 14-. I was just trying to make birdies. I didn’t know I had set a world record until all the reporters started coming up to me afterward.”

He knows now. It took more than three hours to complete his post-round interviews. Everybody wanted to know more about the 30-year-old who had eclipsed the 58s Jim Furyk shot at the Travelers Championship and Stephan Jaeger fired at the KFT’s Ellie Mae Classic, both in 2016.

“I finally said, ‘I’m done,’ ” Del Solar said. “I knew I hadn’t done anything yet. I still wanted to win the tournament, and we had 54 holes to go. I hadn’t even made the cut.”

Del Solar didn’t go on to win the tournament — he finished fifth after following history with rounds of 69-75-63. It’s no surprise Del Solar struggled in the middle two rounds when he couldn’t go out to eat in Bogota without fans pointing at him or asking for photos.

Not that any golfer will complain about a 57.

“It definitely was a boost of confidence, knowing I had accomplished something nobody else had done,” he said. “It assured me my game was moving in the right direction, even though I already knew that. And it gives me more name recognition. Everybody knows me in Chile; not so much here.”

Del Solar attended IMG Academy, Florida State before turning pro

Here’s what to know about Del Solar’s past: He moved to the U.S. to attend the IMG Academy in Bradenton before accepting a scholarship to play at Florida State. He turned pro in 2017, moved to South Florida and started playing on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, where he won four times, before moving to the KFT last year.

Del Solar believes a big step in his career occurred when he joined Dye Preserve in Jupiter. This allowed him to play on the difficult Pete Dye design that exposed his flaws.

“People were asking me after the 57 if I had shot a lower score on my home course,” Del Solar said. “I told them no way. The Dye Preserve is harder than most tournament courses I play.”

When fellow Chilean Joaquin Niemann turned pro in 2018 and moved to Jupiter, Del Solar persuaded him to join Dye Preserve. The same with countryman Mito Pereira, who would have won the 2022 PGA if not for a double bogey on the 72 nd  hole.

Niemann has recently been one of the hottest golfers in the world, becoming the first LIV Golf member to receive an exemption into the Masters. Pereira followed Niemann to LIV.

“The Dye is the best environment for us, having all of our friends there with us,” Del Solar said. “That’s what makes us better, constantly working together. We always grew up practicing and competing and pushing each other. It’s like family.”

Del Solar and his wife, Alexandra, are expecting their first child, a girl, in June. It’s already been a transformative year for the young couple. Del Solar hopes to someday join Niemann and Pereira on golf’s biggest tours. Del Solar is 12 th  on the Korn Ferry Tour standings (the top 30 get promoted to the PGA Tour) and 233 rd  in the world rankings.

He was given an exemption into the PGA Tour event in Mexico and shared the first-round lead with a 65 before finishing 48th. Del Solar realizes he needs to concentrate on the Korn Ferry Tour to continue his career maturation.

He wants to be known as more than Mr. 57.

Turns out Mr. 57 Cristobal Del Solar didn't even know he shot 57 (Wait, what?!)

2003801437

What was going through Cristobal Del Solar's mind as he closed in on the lowest round ever in a PGA Tour-sactioned event? Apparently, not much other than "just trying to make birdies."

Del Solar was busy making birdies in the PGA Tour's Mexico Open on Thursday as his opening-round 65 had him among the leaders. But after, the 30-year-old Chilean was asked about his history-making performance two weeks prior at the Korn Ferry Tour's Astara Golf Championship.

RELATED: PGA Tour pro plays cartpath shot in his socks, Golf Twitter has questions

That Thursday, Del Solar made two eagles and nine birdies in shooting 13 under par and earning the name "Mr. 57." Yes, the course was only 6,254 yards—and playing even shorter at nearly 9,000 feet above sea level—but a 57 is a 57. And it's officially in the record books as the lowest score in Korn Ferry Tour history, one shot lower than Stephan Jaeger at the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic. It's also one stroke lower than Jim Furyk's PGA Tour record of 58 set at the 2016 Travelers Championship.

Turns out, though, Del Solar wasn't thinking about any of that as he played that round. In fact, he didn't even know exactly what he shot when it was over.

"Yeah, honestly—well, first of all, I didn't even know it was history until I finished the round. I didn't know what I was at," Del Solar told reporters on Thursday. "I mean, I knew I was under 10 under, so I didn't know I was 13. I was like maybe 13, maybe 12, you know, maybe 14. Like I didn't know exactly, I was just trying to make birdies."

Imagine being so good you lose track of how many under par you are? Or not knowing how deep into a sub-60(!) round you are? Must be nice.

"Again, I was hitting the ball great, putting myself in really good positions and making putts," Del Solar added. "I guess that's how you shoot 57."

I guess so, Cristobal. I guess so.

2024 Houston Open odds, picks, field, predictions: Golf insider fading Tony Finau at Memorial Park

Sia nejad reveals his houston open 2024 picks, props and sleepers as the pga tour heads to texas.

tony-finau-usatsi.jpg

Players will get their final chance to crack the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking and qualify for the Masters this week when play begins at the 2024 Houston Open, which gets underway on Thursday at Memorial Park Golf Course. Tom Hoge, who's ranked No. 57 in the world, Mackenzie Hughes (No. 63) and Alex Noren (No. 64) are among the PGA Tour winners who are neither ranked in the top 50 nor qualified for the Masters and need an excellent result this week to earn their invitation to Augusta National in two weeks.

For this week, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the overwhelming favorite in the 2024 Houston Open odds at +260. Wyndham Clark (+1200), Will Zalatoris (+2000), Sahith Theegala (+2000) and defending champion Tony Finau (+2200) round out the top five choices in the Houston Open 2024 field. Before locking in any 2024 Houston Open picks, make sure you  see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad .

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been solid with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 36-22-2 and returning 9.953 units over that span. That's a $995 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023.

Nejad also nailed 75-1 longshot Wyndham Clark as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners.

Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2024 Houston Open field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Houston Open expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is completely fading defending champion Tony Finau. The six-time winner on the PGA Tour has had a slow start to the 2024 season. In seven starts this year, he has one finish better than 13th, and he sits a middling 57th in the FedEx Cup standings.

He also has struggled with both the driver and putter this year. He ranks 140th in driving accuracy (54.89%) and 144th in strokes gained: putting (-0.460). "I'm fully aware of his great history at Memorial Park and his course fit, but his play has been too erratic lately," Nejad told SportsLine.

However, Nejad is high on the chances of Wyndham Clark, who is the second choice in the odds at +1200. Clark has three top-two finishes in his last five starts. He won the rain-shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and has finished second in his last two events – the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship – finishing behind Scheffler in both.

Clark has excelled from tee to green this season. He ranks eighth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: tee-to-green (1.214) and 12th in strokes gained: putting (0.656). "He has the complete game to win at this course as his ball-striking prowess is matched by his short game acumen," Nejad said.  See who else to back at SportsLine .

How to make 2024 Houston Open picks

Korn Ferry Tour golfer shoots 57, sets record for PGA Tour-sanctioned event

Chilean golfer Cristobal Del Solar shot a 57 on Thursday during a Korn Ferry Tour event in Colombia, the lowest-ever round in a PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament.

Del Solar carded nine birdies, two eagles and zero bogeys at Country Club de Bogota’s Pacos course, the shortest on the Korn Ferry Tour and a track that sits nearly 9,000 feet above sea level. The 30-year-old, who is No. 259 on the Official World Golf Ranking, had about a 10-foot putt for birdie on his final hole but missed it, ending his round with three consecutive pars at the Astara Golf Championship. He leads the tournament by five strokes at 13 under par as of early Thursday afternoon.

“It was amazing,” Del Solar told reporters via video conference after his round. “I hit the ball incredibly good, I putted incredibly well. … Everything just kept happening, everything kind of clicked. I hit all the drives in the right spot, I kind of chipped in the right spot, everything was on a roll.”

Del Solar said he started to think something special was afoot after his eagle at the par-4 ninth hole but tried to keep his cool.

“I kind of told my caddie, ‘You know, let’s forget about my overall score.’ … That kind of calmed myself,” he said. “I don’t know if I was nervous; I was anxious. I just wanted to keep making more birdies.”

Del Solar’s 8-under 27 on the front nine tied the lowest nine-hole score in Korn Ferry Tour history. His 13 under par tied the record for lowest round to par in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event with seven others , the latest being Adam Hadwin during a PGA Tour event in 2017.

The previous record low for a PGA Tour-sanctioned round was 58, set by Stephan Jaeger at the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic (on what was then the Web.com Tour, the Korn Ferry Tour’s previous name) and matched just a few days later by Jim Furyk at the 2016 Travelers Championship (PGA Tour). A number of other golfers have shot 58 while playing on other tours around the globe. Del Solar’s round ties the 57 shot by Ireland’s David Carey during a 2019 tournament on the Alps Tour, a developmental circuit in Europe, for the lowest in any professional tournament.

The Korn Ferry Tour is the PGA Tour’s main developmental league, with each season’s top golfers receiving promotion.

Del Solar played college golf at Florida State, winning one tournament in 2017 and being named a third-team all-American during his time in Tallahassee. He won three times on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, a third-tier developmental circuit, before becoming a full-time Korn Ferry golfer last year. He has five top-10 finishes on the Korn Ferry tour, including a fourth-place finish in the Bahamas earlier this year.

Chilean golfers are having a moment. On Friday, Joaquin Niemann shot a 59 in the first round of a LIV Golf event in Mexico and would win the tournament two days later in a playoff over Sergio Garcia.

pga tour 57

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Until Sunday, about the only thing Scottie Scheffler and Brice Garnett had in common was PGA Tour status and serving together on the Player Advisory Council last year.

They won tournaments held 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) apart — separated by margins even greater — and it raised the question of which was more valuable.

Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, beat a 69-man field of the best and hottest PGA Tour players at the Arnold Palmer Invitational , picked up $4 million and got a much-needed win. It was his first official title in nearly a year and ended tiresome questions about his putting .

Garnett was No. 535 in the world when he faced 132 players — only seven of them from the top 100, none higher than No. 69 — in the Puerto Rico Open. He struggled to hold back tears after he made a 15-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to win .

The entire purse for Puerto Rico was $4 million. Garnett won $720,000, slightly less than the payout for the two-tie for sixth at Bay Hill.

Who was happier?

“That would be a cool place to win — Bay Hill, Arnie’s tournament, $4 million,” Garnett said. “I wasn’t playing for the $720,000. I was playing for status, for exemptions. I can’t say this for sure, but it probably meant more to me.”

This was an example of how the bottom half lives on the PGA Tour, and maybe it’s an example of why the PGA Tour schedule seems so bloated. The Puerto Rico Open is one of five events on the schedule held opposite tournaments that attract the best players.

The emotions of Garnett, whose only other PGA Tour victory was another opposite-field event in the Dominican Republic five years ago, are understandable.

In this new era of signature events — big money, small fields — players at the very bottom of the pecking order are having a hard time finding room for them.

Priority is given to the top 125 in the FedEx Cup. Then there’s conditional status — Nos. 126 to 150. Henrik Norlander is at No. 126 and has played only two PGA Tour events, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The next batch on the priority ranking are past champions.

That’s where Garnett falls, and that’s why Puerto Rico was his first event. Barring some great play, he was assured of no more than five chances on the PGA Tour. And based on his play last season, he wasn’t entitled to more. He finished at No. 163 in 28 tournaments.

“Everyone in my camp would say I’ve severely underachieved in how I performed in tournaments,” Garnett said. “It was dissatisfying.”

That’s also why he told swing coach John Tillery before leaving for Puerto Rico, “This is my Augusta.” It’s not the Masters, but it was as important as any tournament for him. The hope was a top-10 finish to get into the Valspar Championship, or pick up enough FedEx Cup points to move up higher in the pecking order.

And then he won, and that meant everything.

He doesn’t get in the Masters because it was an opposite-field event. He doesn’t even get in the signature events — only the winners of standalone PGA Tour events get that perk. But he now has full PGA Tour status for the rest of this year and the next two after that. That’s huge.

Instead of a week at home in Valdosta, Georgia, he’s at the TPC Sawgrass for The Players Championship and its $25 million purse. He’ll be at the PGA Championship in May. He’ll start next year at Kapalua for The Sentry.

“I struggled last night getting calmed down with the adrenaline rushing,” Garnett said. “My thoughts were racing thinking about all that comes with this.”

His victory came during a week of more chatter about small fields. Does the tour need to promote stronger fields with only the best players? Does it need to provide more opportunity?

Rory McIlroy favored the former.

“I’m all for making it more cutthroat, more competitive,” he said. “Probably won’t be very popular for saying this, but I’m all for less players and less tour cards, and the best of the best.”

Where would that leave Garnett? Where would it have left Wyndham Clark, who a year ago was No. 116 in the world and without a PGA Tour victory? Now he’s No. 5 in the world, a U.S. Open champion with wins at two signature events.

But then again, maybe McIlroy was onto something. A few days later, he said being cutthroat meant more pathways for fresh faces, and that starts with more room for them.

“I feel like the most competitive professional golf tour in the world, you should have to come out and prove yourself year after year after year,” McIlroy said.

Garnett is 40, but he ticks one box — on the outside trying to get back in.

He earned that in Puerto Rico by winning. That’s all anyone should want to do.

Wyndham Clark, PGA Tour, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Wyndham Clark had an unbelievable round on Saturday.

In fact, it was the lowest round of his life.

He shot a 12-under 60 on Saturday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am , soaring to the top of the leaderboard and setting the course record at Pebble Beach in the process. He now sits at 17-under for the championship.

“I think anytime you [have the chance to] shoot 59, those nerves come up, even if you’re at home. I think that’s for any golfer that happens,” Clark explained after his round.

Wyndham Clark, PGA Tour, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

“Doing it at a place like this in a Signature Event makes it even more special. That’s where I think those nerves coming down those last six holes; even though it’s a Saturday, I felt like it was the end of a tournament because I had a chance to do something special. Even though I fell short on the 59, 60 is still pretty awesome.”

The fireworks started early and often, as Clark holed a 38-footer for eagle at the par-5 second.

That was a harbinger of things to come.

At the 4th, Clark rolled in his first birdie of the day to get to 3-under through four.

Two holes later, Clark made another eagle from long distance. He rolled in his eagle putt from 42 feet away.

Then, Clark rattled off five straight birdies, three of which came on one of Pebble Beach’s most challenging stretches. The 8th, 9th, and 10th holes are all playing over par, but Clark made them look easy.

He went out in 8-under 28, tying Pebble Beach’s front nine record. That was mainly due to his hot putter, as Clark made 150 feet of putts on the front nine, per golf statistician Justin Ray.

His back nine got off to a rocking start, too. Clark’s second shot from the left rough at 10 was a sight to behold, as he stuck his approach to mere inches.

This was some shot from Clark. His second at 10 led to this birdie: pic.twitter.com/0TwA31NU13 — Playing Through (@_PlayingThrough) February 3, 2024

He was not finished.

Clark went on to birdie 11, but then had an adventurous bogey at the par-3 12th.

After finding the sand trap to the right of the green, Clark hit a poor second shot into the deep rough between the left-side bunker and the green.

He was forced to chip left-handed and skulled his third shot like a 15-handicapper.

“I have a decent lefty swing and can hit it. The lie wasn’t great and didn’t come out awesome, but I really thought I could hit the shot,” Clark said of his third shot on 12.

“I also thought it was a good mental check for me to go lefty because that’s something that I think I’d usually shy away from under pressure. So, I challenged myself a little bit. Let’s see if you can handle this mentally and not be so scared. I tried to pull off the shot, but I didn’t, but it worked out.”

Alas, Clark saved a bogey from about 25 feet, his only dropped shot of the day.

“[I was fired up about] that bogey putt on 12,” Clark said.

“Honestly, of all of the putts today, I was not really trying to make was that one. I was focused on my speed and trying to get it down there, two-putt, get the double, go to the next hole, and move on. For that to go in, it was like all right, man, I’m hot.”

✅ Bunker ✅ Fried egg ✅ Left-handed shot The best bogey you'll see today. pic.twitter.com/bhtXOLk1I2 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) February 3, 2024

Then, on the next two holes, Clark’s hot streak continued. He birdied the 13th and 14th holes to get back on track.

By then, a sub-60 round was squarely in play.

But it was ultimately not meant to be.

Clark had a great look at birdie on the 16th hole, but his 10-footer for birdie came up just short in the heart of the hole. A similar occurrence happened at the par-3 17th, where one more revolution would have given Clark yet another birdie.

“I really didn’t think about it until I got to the 18th tee box, and when I did, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, it would have been nice to have one of those last two because then I only have to birdie 18,’” Clark said.

A putt for 59 ... @Wyndham_Clark has 26 feet for history @ATTProAm . pic.twitter.com/nYgEXGfQny — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) February 3, 2024

“Once I hit the fairway on 18, I knew I would have a chance to hopefully try to shoot that special number. I gave it my best shot... I’m super happy with my round. Anytime you shoot 12 under anywhere, you’ve got to be happy.”

From the 18th fairway, Clark stripped a 4-iron from 230 yards into the middle of the green. Had the eagle fallen, Clark would have carded the 13th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history.

And yet, like his putts at both 16 and 17, his eagle try at 18 came up just inches short.

“For the third straight hole, it was on track to drop but came up inches short,” said CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz.

Clark was truly inches short of shooting a historic 57, which would have been the lowest score recorded in PGA Tour history. It also would have been done on a par-72, making it that much more impressive.

Nevertheless, Clark had to settle for a 12-under 60, which any golfer would take. And now, the reigning U.S. Open champion has command of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Chile's Cristobal Del Solar has recorded the lowest score ever in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event with a stunning 13-under-par 57 in the Astara Golf Championship.

Del Solar carded two eagles and nine birdies in the opening round of the Korn Ferry Tour event on the Pacos Course at the Country Club de Bogata in Colombia.

The 30-year-old equalled the Korn Ferry Tour record with a front nine of 27, making six birdies in the first eight holes and an eagle on the par-four ninth.

A birdie on the 10th and another eagle on the 12th took Del Solar to 11 under par for 12 holes and he picked up further shots on the 14th and 15th before making par on the last three holes.

The Pacos course is the shortest on the Korn Ferry Tour - playing just 6,254 yards - and is also almost 9,000 feet above sea level.

Del Solar has played three events on the Korn Ferry Tour this year. His lowest round before the 57 on Thursday was a 67.

Del Solar has beaten the record previously held by Jim Furyk and Stephan Jaeger. Jaeger shot a 58 (-12) in the first round of the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour. Remarkably, Furyk shot the same score the following week on the PGA TOUR in the final round of the Travelers Championship.

While Ireland's David Carey carded an 11-under 57 on the Alps Tour in 2019.

Speaking at the end of his round, Del Solar said: “It feels incredible. I was just playing, I didn't even know where I was at.

"I asked my caddie on the 18th if I was going to break 60. I’ve never broken 60 before. He was like, 'I think you’re going to break a little bit more than 60'.

“I played really good golf, I drove the ball well, chipped it well, putted it well. I’m happy, it was a great round.

“It had to be a specific kind of course to do this stuff, obviously if it’s higher it’s going to be more difficult. I haven't even broken 60 practising on my home course.

“It’s surreal, I'm happy it was a good round. It feels good when people applaud your shots.”
