Why Go To Bora Bora

The small island of Bora Bora (just about 6 miles long and a little more than 2 miles wide) overflows with beauty. A dormant volcano rises up at its center and fans out into lush jungle before spilling into an aquamarine lagoon. In fact, author James Michener, who wrote "Tales of the South Pacific," called Bora Bora "the most beautiful island in the world." The 18th-century British explorer James Cook even coined it as the "Pearl of the Pacific." The very definition of a tropical getaway, blissful Bora Bora abounds with luxurious resorts , sunny skies, warm waters and friendly locals.

And as you might've already guessed, the main industry on this petite island in French Polynesia and its swarm of tiny  motu  (islands) is tourism. To that end, you can snorkel, explore  Vaitape  (Bora Bora's main port), hike  Mount Otemanu  and more. But there's a catch: Bora Bora is expensive – very expensive. In short, visit Bora Bora for natural beauty, visit for utter relaxation and visit if you have the money.

Bora Bora Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best times to go to Bora Bora are November and April. These short shoulder seasons offer fine weather with temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s. High season runs from May to October when rain showers are isolated and the number of tourists swells. Low season stretches from December to March when the weather is wet and visitors become mosquito bait. But really anytime is a good time to visit Bora Bora, since the weather is warm year-round.

Weather in Bora Bora

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

It's all about the lagoon  Here's a secret: Many of Bora Bora's beaches are manmade and not much to write home about. The turquoise waters of the lagoon are another story.

Taste test great local food Trying  poisson cru  (raw fish) – usually tuna or mahi-mahi marinated in lime juice and coconut milk – is a must.

Try the miracle oil  Pick up a bottle of all-purpose  monoi , an oil made from coconut and tiare blossoms. It serves as a leave-in hair conditioner, a moisturizer and even a salve for insect bites.

How to Save Money in Bora Bora

Visit in the offseason  The room rate for an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora can hover close to $1,000 a night, but you can find lower rates if you visit between December and March with the exception of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Take a Pacific Ocean cruise  Many cruise lines stop at Bora Bora, so you can get a taste of the luxe life without cashing in your retirement.

Bring your own alcohol  And pack lots of sunscreen. Many shops on the island sell alcohol and basic necessities – such as sunscreen and bug spray – at high prices, so make sure to pack in surplus.

Culture & Customs

The main languages in Bora Bora are French and Tahitian, but you'll find that many people also speak English, especially resort employees. French Polynesians move at a relaxed pace. They have a life philosophy called "` Aita pea pea, " which means "not to worry." Try to go with the flow and enjoy life at a slower clip.

Protestant missionaries, who came to the island in the 19th century, have heavily influenced the religion in Bora Bora: Christianity continues to play a major role in the island's culture. If you're interested, you might stop into the  Église Protestante Maohi (Maohi Protestant Church) in Vaitape, which has roots dating back to the late 1700s.

Since 1946, French Polynesia (a group of islands of which Bora Bora belongs to) has been an overseas territory of the French Republic. But French Polynesia has a lot of autonomy, which you'll see in everything from their currency to taxation. The official currency of Bora Bora is the French Pacific franc (CFP). One U.S. dollar is equivalent to approximately 103 CFP.

What to Eat

Seafood features heavily on the menus of Bora Bora restaurants, and travelers would be remiss if they didn't try some of the local specialities, namely poisson cru , or raw tuna that has been marinated in lime juice and coconut milk. Mahi-mahi, grouper and bonito are other staples that are often found on Bora Bora menus. Visitors should also sample the locally grown pineapple, coconut and bananas.

Keep in mind that many visitors to Bora Bora choose to purchase a meal plan through their resort, especially if their resort is located on a smaller motu (island), which necessitates boat travel to and from the main island where most of the popular restaurants are located. As you might imagine, Bora Bora's restaurants are often expensive – after all, importing ingredients is expensive. The destination's most popular, traveler-approved fine dining establishments include Lagoon Restaurant by Jean-Georges at the St. Regis Bora Bora , where the ambiance and views rival the French-and-Asian menu, and St. James Bora Bora , where travelers say the service is unparalleled. For a cheaper dining experience, visitors might want to stop by a beachside roulotte (think: food truck) for some inexpensive local fare. Travelers suggest jumping in the queue for the roulottes with the longest lines, as there is likely a delicious reason for their popularity. Other travelers suggest shopping in local supermarkets in Vaitape for snacks and drinks (they'll cost significantly less than what's offered at your hotel).

Getting Around Bora Bora

The best way to get around Bora Bora is by bike, especially when you consider that the entire island only takes a few hours to traverse. Rental cars are another option, but they cost significantly more than a rental bicycle. The local bus system, Le Truck, is notoriously unpredictable and taxis are quite expensive.

To get to Bora Bora, most travelers fly into Bora Bora Airport also known as Motu Mute Airport. If you're coming from the U.S., you'll first stop at the Faa'a International Airport in Tahiti . Once you've cleared customs, you'll hop on a 45-minute flight to Bora Bora Airport. You'll find this airport on a small islet called Motu Mute, just northwest of the main island, and you'll have to take a quick catamaran ride to reach your final destination at Bora Bora's Vaitape quay. Many resorts offer airport transportation; check to see if yours does before making arrangements.

Entry & Exit Requirements

To visit French Polynesia, you'll need a U.S. passport valid for six months beyond the duration of your trip. If you're planning to stay in the country for more than 90 days, you'll also need to acquire a visa. For more information, visit the U.S. State Department's website .

Jewel of the South Seas

Undoubtedly the most celebrated island in the South Pacific, Bora Bora is French Polynesia's leading lady. Her beauty is unrivaled and her fame, unwavering. Bora Bora is one of the few places on earth that everyone hopes to witness in their lifetime—and once you see it, you are forever enamored.

More than just a romantic ideal, Bora Bora is a romantic reality. It comes as no surprise that the island is an internationally acclaimed honeymoon destination. Our newlyweds who decide on a Bora Bora honeymoon often feel as though they have escaped to a private oasis tailored entirely to their special moment of marital bliss—and anyone in the midst of planning a wedding can relate to just how enticing that sounds.

Bora Bora may feel worlds away, but this South Seas splendor is well within reach. Where is Bora Bora, exactly? The island lies just northwest of Tahiti, less than an hour away by plane from Papeete. The airport is located on a small, separate part of the island known as Motu Mete. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with a warm smile and fragrant flower lei and transferred by boat to your Bora Bora resort, meaning you hardly have to wait for your first encounter with the island's famously translucent lagoon.

Final Impression

Once seen, Bora Bora is never forgotten. From the day you arrive until the moment you part ways, you will be in awe of how her soaring mountain peaks, turquoise lagoon and luxuriant overwater bungalows somehow look even more spectacular than the pictures.

Bora Bora has become synonymous with overwater bungalows. Many of these lavish floating villas have glass floors that supply a window to the lagoon life below. This locale is unique in the fact that most Bora Bora resort hotels are built on their own tiny island, or motu, and visits elsewhere must be arranged by boat transfer. Not to worry, though, you will hardly need to leave your bungalow let alone the resort. From lounging on your own private deck and receiving room service via outrigger canoe, to indulging in a rejuvenating spa treatment, you will pass the time in quiet seclusion and opulent luxury.

  • High operating costs:  Running a resort or business on the island can be expensive due to factors such as import taxes, labor costs, and the need to generate electricity and fresh water on the island. These operational costs are often passed on to visitors in the form of higher prices for accommodations, dining, and activities.

Bora Bora is near which country?

Conrad Bora Bora Nui

Bora Bora is located in the South Pacific Ocean, approximately 7,500 kilometers (4,650 miles) east of Australia and around 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) south of Hawaii.

The nearest countries to Bora Bora are other island nations in the South Pacific, such as Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga, but they are still several hundred kilometers away.

Who owns Bora Bora?

Bora Bora sightseeing

Bora Bora is a part of French Polynesia, which is an overseas collectivity of FRANCE . As such, the island is governed by the French government.

The French government has control over areas such as defense, foreign affairs, and currency, while the local government (which includes the President of French Polynesia and the Territorial Assembly) has jurisdiction over areas such as education, health, and economic development.

What is the electrical voltage in Bora Bora?

Polynesia

The electrical voltage on the island of Bora Bora, as well as in the rest of French Polynesia, is 220-240 volts AC, with a frequency of 50 Hz.

The power sockets used on the island are Type E and Type F, which have two round pins, so if you are traveling from a country that uses a different type of plug, you will need to bring a travel adapter to use your electronic devices.

Can I drink tap water in Bora Bora?

Road next to the island

Tap water in Bora Bora is considered safe to drink, but it may not taste as good as bottled water due to the high mineral content.

The water on the private island here is sourced from rainwater and underground wells, and it goes through a treatment process before distribution.

However, some people may experience stomach upset or other digestive issues when drinking tap water in foreign countries due to differences in water treatment and sanitation practices.

If you have concerns about drinking tap water, you can stick to bottled water , which is widely available for purchase on the island. Additionally, many hotels and resorts on the island provide complimentary bottled water to their guests.

Bora Bora Sister Island

Nature

Bora Bora has several “sister” islands , which are also part of the Society Islands archipelago in French Polynesia.

Some of the most well-known sister islands of Bora Bora include:

  • Raiatea : Known as the “Sacred Island,” Raiatea is the second-largest island in French Polynesia and is located just 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Bora Bora. It is a popular destination for sailing and cultural tours, and visitors can explore ancient marae (Polynesian temples) and lush rainforests.
  • Taha’a : Located just a short boat ride from Bora Bora, Taha’a is known for its vanilla plantations, black pearl farms, and stunning coral gardens. It is a quieter and more secluded island than Bora Bora, with fewer tourists and a more authentic Polynesian feel.
  • Huahine : Huahine is located approximately 110 kilometers (68 miles) northwest of Bora Bora and is made up of two islands connected by a bridge. Huahine Island is known for its unspoiled natural beauty, ancient Polynesian ruins, and excellent surfing and snorkeling spots.
  • Maupiti : Maupiti is a small, remote island located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Bora Bora. It is one of the least developed islands in French Polynesia and offers a tranquil escape for visitors looking to get away from the crowds. It is known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear lagoon, and stunning views of Mount Teurafaatiu .

Islands like Bora Bora

Resorts

French Polynesia is home to many islands that are similar to Bora Bora, offering visitors the first world the perfect combination of stunning natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and luxurious amenities.

Some of the other islands that are often compared to Bora Bora include:

  • Moorea : Located just 17 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of Tahiti, Moorea is known for its jagged volcanic peaks, lush rainforests, and pristine beaches. It has a more relaxed and laid-back vibe than Bora Bora, with a variety of accommodations ranging from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxury resorts.
  • Fiji : Fiji is an archipelago of over 300 islands located in the South Pacific, and it is known for its white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, and vibrant coral reefs. It has a range of accommodations, from backpacker hostels to all-inclusive resorts, and is a popular destination for honeymooners and adventure seekers.
  • Maldives : The Maldives is a tropical paradise made up of over 1,000 coral islands located in the Indian Ocean. It is known for its overwater bungalows, turquoise waters, and pristine beaches and is a popular destination for honeymooners and luxury travelers.
  • Seychelles : The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands located off the coast of East Africa, and it is known for its white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and diverse marine life. It has a range of accommodations, from rustic lodges to luxury resorts, and is a popular destination for honeymooners and nature lovers.

Are Bora Bora and Tahiti the same?

Resorts

No, Bora Bora and Tahiti are not the same place. They are both located in French Polynesia and are popular travel destinations, but they are separate islands.

Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia and is located in the Society Islands archipelago, which also includes Bora Bora.

While both islands share some similarities, such as beautiful beaches and lush tropical landscapes, they also have distinct differences in terms of culture, attractions, and activities.

Tahiti is known for its lively capital city of Papeete, which offers a mix of French and Polynesian culture, while the island of Bora Bora is more secluded and renowned for its luxurious overwater bungalows and clear blue lagoon.

Bora Bora is a  paradise for adventurers  and nature enthusiasts.

Bora Bora Guide: Planning Your Trip

TripSavvy / Claire Cohen

With white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and a lurid, rocky peak rising from the groves of coconut palms, Bora Bora has long been the boilerplate South Seas fantasy isle. Long treasured by the elite jet set, it’s an aspirational (and often expensive) destination that will linger in travelers’ memories long after they’ve left. Whether you're seeking a luxurious stay in an overwater bungalow, a spa treatment in tropical surroundings, or a world-class meal at a top French restaurant, here's what you need to know about planning a trip to Bora Bora.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: The weather is at its finest between May and October. November and December are the beginning of what Tahitians call the “abundant season," when the weather is rainy but the flowers are in full bloom and fruit is at its most luscious. January through April can be hot, humid, and rainy.
  • Language: French is the official language of French Polynesia, and most residents also speak Tahitian. English is also widely spoken on Bora Bora, particularly among tourism workers.
  • Currency: The French Pacific franc (abbreviated CFP or XPF), locally called “francs.” Their value is officially pegged to the euro, but for Americans it’s easy to remember one franc roughly equals one U.S. cent. Many shops (particularly pearl shops) will also quote or display prices in euros and dollars, but charge in francs.
  • Getting Around: Most resorts on Bora Bora are on the motu, which is the atoll surrounding the island. The motu has no roads between properties, so all transport between resorts or to the island itself will be via boat. Many resorts offer boat shuttles to or from Vaitape for a fee. Excursions typically include transportation from the resort, but this can vary. Once on the main island, there are car rental offices in Vaitape. Taxis are scarce, and expensive. Travel between resorts, unless they’re branded the same (InterContinental has two properties on Bora Bora with a set shuttle between them), often requires a private boat transfer and the cost can be steep. The most efficient way to travel between resorts on the motu is to take one resort's boat shuttle to the airport to meet the other one's boat.
  • Travel Tip: Air Tahiti offers online check-in, the primary benefit of which is the separate ticket counter line for baggage check only.

Things to Do

Bora Bora is a low-energy vacation destination, and the resorts are designed with this in mind. Days here are often spent swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, or simply taking in the fantastical views from the lanai of one's overwater bungalow. Visitors also enjoy fine dining, Polynesian dance revues hosted by the resorts, or spa treatments. More active travelers can hike Mount Otemanu on the main island, embark on a snorkeling excursion, or explore the island’s history and culture with a guide.

Top things to do on Bora Bora include:

  • Shopping for Tahitian Pearls, pareus (colorful Tahitian-style wraps), and other souvenirs at resorts or in Vaitape.
  • Go on a snorkeling excursion to a remote part of the motu, complete with a beach picnic (most resorts offer some version of this tour).
  • Tour the island in an open-air Le Truck jitney, visiting scenic overlooks, ruins of ancient temples (called marae), and the remains of WWII-era defensive cannons.

What to Eat and Drink

At the resorts, expect world-class dining that combines local seafood and premium imported meats with French culinary know-how. Many of Bora Bora’s resorts have chefs direct from France, and the quality of the cooking is sublime. This is where the elite come to play, so even the most sophisticated palates will be well-sated here. Each resort will also offer their own take on local favorites like poisson cru—a raw fish salad with lime, coconut milk, and crunchy vegetables—or the firi firi Tahitian-style coconut donut. Breads and pastries are, understandably, consistent with the standard one might find in any French patisserie.

Outside the resorts, there are a handful of ocean-front restaurants dotting the shoreline. The most famous of these is Bloody Mary’s , where diners select fresh fish and imported meats to be grilled and served with generously portioned sides. Also common on Bora Bora is the "snack" (a diminutive of the “snack bar” popularized by American GIs during WWII), an often cash-only food truck or roadside stand. Hit up a snack for huge portions of burgers, steaks, or sandwiches served with fries. You can also get stir-fry; local fish grilled, fried, or served raw; and sweet or savory crêpes. Portions are almost always large enough to be comfortably shared.

Where to Stay

Bora Bora is the domain of the luxury resort with bungalow-style accommodations, and most of those are the famous overwater bungalows that blare from the pages of glossy brochures. A handful of these resorts are on the main island (with somewhat lower rates), but most are on the motu, across the lagoon from the island. A far less expensive option is the pension, or Tahitian-style guesthouse. Typically on the main island, these accommodations range from very basic to somewhat deluxe, and are a fraction of the cost of the resorts.

Explore our recommendations on the best overwater bungalow resorts in Bora Bora.

Getting There

French Polynesia’s only international airport is Faa’a International Airport on Tahiti, which is 8 hours by air from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Bora Bora is an additional 45-minute flight from Tahiti onboard Air Tahiti (French Polynesia’s domestic airline, not to be confused with the international carrier Air Tahiti Nui). Visitors can also book helicopter transfers to Bora Bora from Tahiti.

Bora Bora’s airport, Motu Mute Aiport, is on its own island and accessible only by boat. Air Tahiti operates a free passenger shuttle from there to Vaitape, and guests who have pension reservations on Bora Bora will generally be picked up at the shuttle dock in Vaitape. For travelers staying on the motu, resorts offer boat transfers to and from the airport, usually for about $100 per person round trip.

There is also a ferry running a thrice-weekly circuit between Bora Bora and the neighboring islands of Raiatea, Tahaa, and Maupiti. Designed mostly for local traffic, it’s generally not used by visitors (the ferry service has no website; advance bookings can be done by telephone or e-mail). Hotel concierges can help arrange tickets for the most intrepid travelers.

Culture and Customs

As French Polynesia is influenced by France, many French social cues apply here. It’s polite to say “bonjour” or “’Ia ora na” (“hello” in Tahitian) to no one in particular upon entering a shop or restaurant, and to say or return a greeting again before conducting any business.

The best way to tour the island is with a guide, as many points of interest are on private property and not clearly marked (any fee charged by the owner is included in the tour price). Resorts will often send a list of tours and activities in advance of a stay, but as local conditions can change, they tend to confirm 24 to 48 hours prior to the tour.

Outside of resorts, it’s common for a restaurant manager or proprietor to greet and seat guests. In French Polynesia, it’s also common to ask for and pay the bill at the bar or front desk—it won’t be provided unless requested. Tax and service is generally included in menu prices, and tipping isn’t customary —there isn’t even space for it on credit card slips. At resorts, service flow is more consistent with U.S. standards. Note that while resorts will include a line for gratuity on guest checks, tax and service is included. However, there is one exception to the tipping rule in French Polynesia. Tour guides don’t expect tips, but are customarily handed around 10 percent of the tour price—unless they’re self-employed.

Being surrounded by water, guests in overwater bungalows can gain a false sense of security and leave their doors open or unlocked. The bungalows are more easily accessible from the water than they appear, though, and it’s best to double check that all doors and windows are secure before leaving.

Bargaining isn’t the done thing in French Polynesia, although it’s customary to ask (politely, and just once) for a discount when buying pearls. There are multiple pearl shops in Vaitape, so comparison shopping is a snap.

Bora Bora is casual, but Polynesians tend to be relatively modest and visitors should wear shirts and shoes when away from the beach or pool.

Money Saving Tips

  • Pack light. Air Tahiti’s carry-on baggage allowance is on the lighter side; excess charges for checked baggage are per-kilo and can add up quickly.
  • Resort dining on Bora Bora is eye-poppingly expensive. If meals are not included in your rate but you're intending to dine mostly on-site, you should plan on spending at least $250 a person per day; this budget factors in all three meals but not alcohol.
  • Many restaurants will offer round-trip transportation from resorts or pensions (either free or for a nominal charge) for guests with reservations.
  • A trip to a supermarket in Vaitape can reduce dependence on resort dining (mini fridges are standard in many resort bungalows). Substantial baguette sandwiches, take-out Asian dishes, salads, and snacks can all be found for reasonable prices.
  • Cocktails are also expensive on Bora Bora (at one ultra-luxe resort, each cocktail on the menu is $40). Highballs like gin and tonic, however, are subject to pricing statutes, and are on par with what one might pay at a luxury resort in the U.S. Some resorts also offer happy hour promotions.
  • Packaged liquor is also expensive on Bora Bora—prices can be up to three times higher than in the U.S. Many travelers buy a bottle of their favorite liquor at the duty-free shop at their U.S. gateway to use for their own cocktails throughout their trip (be sure to transfer large bottles to checked luggage in Tahiti before checking bags for the domestic flight).

More About Bora Bora

Chances are that if you were asked to draw your idea of a Pacific island, you might come up with a picture that looks like Bora Bora, which has rainforest covered peaks soaring more than 2,000 feet above a classic lagoon of blues and greens. The entire volcanic mass is surrounded by a ring of coral reef and tiny islets with lovely beaches and coconut trees. The island itself can be explored in a few hours; there are sweeping beaches in the south and ancient Polynesian temples hidden in the jungle. It's populated by 8,880 Polynesians who love to show visitors their treasured lagoon and its marine inhabitants. They also love to entertain visitors with music and dance. The island is a caldera, or collapsed volcano; Pofai Bay is the crater center, while the towering Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu are all that remain of the volcano walls.

Top Experiences

Swim/Snorkel the Lagoon : The crystal-clear water and the mild temperature, mean snorkeling and swimming in this blue lagoon is especially beautiful. Manta rays, fish, moral eels, and corals are just a few of the sights to be found under the surface.

Mount Otemanu : This is the eye-catching extinct volcano in the center of the island. You may hike around the base, but the summit is not reachable.

Pearl Markets : Tahiti is famous for their black pearls. There are many farms which produce a wide variety of colors, sizes, and shapes. You will have thousands to choose from, settings are available for purchase, or you can take them home with you to set later if you wish.

Island Tour : An island tour is an enjoyable way to see the landscapes of this beautiful island. The guides know the stories of the Polynesian gods and chiefs and take you to secluded areas not often seen.

Which should you choose? 5 top Bora Bora resorts and how to book

Clint Henderson

When I joined the TPG team back in 2019, one destination at the top of my bucket list was French Polynesia. Unfortunately, COVID-19 had other plans .

I scheduled and then had to cancel trips to Tahiti several times throughout the pandemic. Once the country finally reopened to international travel, I was able to nail down dates and change my airline tickets. Tahiti Tourism offered to help with arrangements and accommodations on the ground. While we normally make all our own travel bookings, given the circumstances and uncertainty of pandemic-related restrictions, I agreed to their help.

During my nearly two-week visit, I spent time in Bora Bora, Moorea, Rangiroa and Tahiti. While all four islands were memorable, I found one to be particularly captivating: Bora Bora.

Despite having lofty expectations for this dreamy destination, the atoll — including its accommodations — managed to sail past the high bar I had set in my mind. Here's a look at five of the top resorts on Bora Bora for every type of traveler.

bo.ra travel

For many visitors, one of the main draws of Bora Bora is the opportunity to stay in a dreamy overwater bungalow or a cliffside villa with sweeping ocean panoramas. I found no shortage of luxurious accommodations throughout my stay as I hopped from resort to resort. Here were some of my favorites, along with what they offer different types of travelers.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui

Best for: hilton honors loyalists and solo travelers seeking privacy.

I spent two nights at the Conrad Bora Bora Nui , a stunning property with a mix of overwater bungalows and cliffside rooms facing the Pacific Ocean. Rates here start at $1,060 or 120,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

bo.ra travel

The hilltop villa I was assigned comprised a balcony with a small pool that was perfect for quick dips to cool off on a hot day, not to mention panoramic views of the azure and turquoise ocean currents drifting away in the distance. The interior included a huge living area, palatial bathroom and a canopied bed that epitomized tropical elegance. My calls to the "Conrad Service" button on the room phone were always answered promptly, and had there not been so much to do around the resort and the lagoon, I might have just spent my entire stay in my villa.

bo.ra travel

As luck would have it, two old friends of mine happened to be staying at the Conrad, too, so they showed me around their overwater bungalow. Their room had a balcony with a sun deck and a plunge pool that was larger than the one in my villa, and they could climb right down into the lagoon.

bo.ra travel

My friends and I tried several of the property's restaurants and bars, including Banyan, a contemporary restaurant serving satisfying (albeit unexciting) Chinese fare, but it was Tamure Beach Grill I enjoyed most.

bo.ra travel

Guests dine right on the beach, enjoying a Polynesian dance show and buffet-style dishes like tangy poison cru (fish marinated in lemon juice, coconut milk and various vegetables) and roasted pig cooked in a traditional underground oven and presented during a dramatic ceremony at sunset.

bo.ra travel

Since I only spent a few days at the property, I didn't get a chance to try the majority of the on-site amenities, such as the Hina Spa or the 24-hour fitness center, but I did make the most of my Diamond status in the Hilton Honors program . In addition to receiving late checkout on request, free bottled water, 1,000 complimentary Hilton Honors points, access to premium Wi-Fi and free continental breakfast every day of my stay, I had exclusive access to a special "Hilton Honors beach" where I spent a decent amount of my downtime.

bo.ra travel

Few things instantly put your mind at ease like the sound of water gently lapping the shore with warm sand between your toes and the sun shining down on you.

Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora

Best for: luxury leisure travelers and couples.

I spent one night in an overwater bungalow at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, where cash rates for standard accommodations (which are overwater bungalows) start at $1,549 per night. It was my first-ever visit to a Four Seasons property, and now I understand why some people love the brand so much.

bo.ra travel

After checking in, I was whisked away to my two-room bungalow via a resort golf cart. While receiving a tour of my bungalow overlooking the placid lagoon's aquamarine waters, I couldn't wait to dive right in for a swim.

bo.ra travel

The bungalow itself was breathtaking, too, with a large bedroom plus a separate seating and dining area. Nespresso coffee machines and the brand's signature beds dressed in Dobby Sateen cotton sheets come standard, as do in-floor glass tiles through which you can view the lagoon's waters and aquatic life below.

As you may expect, the service was just as exceptional as the bungalow itself. Most requests can be made via the Four Seasons app, so you can ask for more towels or book reservations in the spa or restaurants right from the in-room tablet. It would be an excellent option for couples on a romantic getaway since you practically don't have to leave your room to enjoy Bora Bora's singular scenery.

bo.ra travel

However, if you manage to pull yourself away from the room, you'll find a variety of amenities at your disposal, including a large spa and fitness center complex, tennis courts, a dive center, an infinity pool and even a beach volleyball court.

bo.ra travel

There are several dining options, too, ranging from Mediterranean-inspired Arii Moana to a seafood-focused beach grill. I ended up visiting Vaimiti, an Asian-influenced restaurant in its own overwater bungalow, for a casual, solo dinner of fried pork gyoza with a black vinegar sauce and sesame oil and kung pao chicken with leeks, peppers and peanuts, both of which were delicious.

The only other option I was able to try during my short stay was Tere Nui, the open-air breakfast spot. The buffet-style smorgasbord of breakfast dishes was seemingly endless, offering anything you could possibly crave in the morning.

InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa

Best for: laid-back beach seekers.

The final resort I stayed at during my time in Bora Bora was the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa.

bo.ra travel

Featuring 84 overwater bungalows with beach, lagoon, island or Mount Otemanu views, the property checked all my boxes when it came to overwater living in an idyllic piece of paradise. I truly unwound during my two-night stay in a standard overwater villa, which is bookable starting at $1,017 per night, or at least 120,000 IHG One Rewards points.

bo.ra travel

The villa was superb, offering a living room, an office in the entryway and a separate bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of natural light and provided postcard-worthy water views. I especially enjoyed the attached outdoor space, which had a swimming platform for easy access to the lagoon.

bo.ra travel

Determined to fit in another quintessential experience during my Bora Bora sojourn — a massage in an overwater bungalow — I booked a treatment in what ended up being one of the coolest spas I have ever visited.

The InterContinental's Deep Ocean Spa focuses on thalassotherapy, which incorporates nutrient-rich seawater into an array of spa services.

bo.ra travel

The facility comprises several soaking pools and hot tubs, but the massage rooms are undoubtedly the most interesting spaces at the spa. Each treatment room features a window built into the floor so you can watch tropical fish swim in the lagoon below during your massage, which made it even more relaxing.

bo.ra travel

The hotel's dining outlets were plentiful and impressive, too. I enjoyed a five-course dining extravaganza at Le Corail Restaurant, the property's signature restaurant. The service was wonderful and the food was just as beautiful to look at as it was delicious to eat. Although I was dining alone, the meal was so extraordinary I will never forget it. The food was served at a leisurely pace that never felt too slow.

My top dishes were the appetizer of beef filet marinated in mango rum with Taha'a vanilla coconut jelly and the coconut surprise, which included a black and white chocolate shell, coconut heart and lemongrass foam and passion fruit velouté. The three varieties of butter were pretty amazing, too.

Mind the dress code. The restaurant says, "We kindly ask that male guests wear long trousers, a collared shirt and covered shoes, and female guests wear a dress or blouse with pants or a skirt."

bo.ra travel

Dinner at Le Corail Restaurant was a tough act to follow, but the Reef Restaurant's massive breakfast spread the next morning did not disappoint. The mix of local items like fresh fruit and American-style breakfast staples was enough to fuel me up before I headed out for a relaxing day outdoors.

bo.ra travel

With expansive views of the lagoon, the infinity pool was an ideal place to kick up my heels and relax.

bo.ra travel

I would have happily stayed here for weeks had I had the time and money (or points).

Intercontinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort

Best for: budget-conscious visitors.

While I didn't get a chance to stay at InterContinental's other Bora Bora resort, I did have an opportunity to check it out before an all-terrain vehicle excursion I had signed up for that was using the property's lobby as the meet-up point.

bo.ra travel

The Intercontinental Bora Bora Le Moana has 61 rooms, including some overwater bungalows and some beach bungalows. There is a small infinity swimming pool and a nice little beach to explore. The great thing is the location is not far from one of the most beautiful beaches in Bora Bora, Matira Beach.

There are only two restaurants — Vini Vini Bar and Restaurant Terrace and Noa Noa Terrace Restaurant — but you can access other nearby restaurants which will sometimes pay for your transportation. Ask the front desk for options.

There is no gym or spa, but you can sometimes get a free shuttle to the sister Intercontinental property for gym or spa activities. Ask at the front desk.

The facilities looked a bit worn and reviews from colleagues who've stayed here are hit or miss. Still, there's no denying that the resort's relatively affordable room rates make it a great option for travelers sticking to a tight budget. I found nights from as low as $521, a bargain compared to the other four resorts on this list.

However, those with a stash of IHG One Rewards points may have difficulty redeeming a free night here. I couldn't find much award availability during my research, which Katie Genter (TPG's resident IHG expert) confirmed after finding very few awards available when doing her own search. In fact, Katie couldn't find a single four-night award available.

The limited availability is definitely a drawback, but if you're lucky, you may find rooms for about 120,000 IHG One Rewards points per night. Keep in mind, though, that IHG prices its awards dynamically , meaning award nights here will likely require even more points due to the high demand, and if you do find saver availability, it might be worth checking to see if award nights are also available at the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa, which is much pricier in terms of cash.

Given how affordable (by Bora Bora standards) cash rates for rooms are, though, I'd consider staying here whenever I find myself back in French Polynesia.

With cash rates starting at about $2,300 a night but going as high as $3,400, I could not swing a stay at the uber-exclusive St. Regis Bora Bora Resort . However, if I had unlimited money (or points), I'd no doubt want to reserve a room here.

bo.ra travel

TPG points and miles reporter Kyle Olsen loved the property when he visited years ago, calling it the best resort he's ever stayed at. Despite it being designed with couples in mind, Kyle had an amazing time when he visited with his parents. He was especially impressed with the spacious rooms, which all come with attached outdoor areas and measure at least 1,549 square feet, meaning there was plenty of room for everyone. Some even feature private plunge pools.

bo.ra travel

Others at TPG, including The Points Guy himself, Brian Kelly, and former editor-at-large Zach Honig, also enjoyed the property, listing the large renovated rooms, wide selection of activities and delicious seafood as highlights. However, the service could be lackluster at times, according to them, and everything from the rooms to meals at the five on-site restaurants is expensive.

bo.ra travel

The massive property features a swim-up bar pool and an adults-only pool. With three beaches, you'll never want for a place to swim or sunbathe.

There are six restaurants or bars to get food and drink, including the quite well-known Lagoon Restaurant by Jean-Georges. The Iridium Spa is on an island in the middle of the hotel's famous lagoonarium where you can also snorkel undisturbed in schools of local fish.

There is free access to nonmotorized activities like stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking. There's also a gym, a kids club and even an artist-in-residence with a small museum.

If you're hoping to trim resort costs by redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points, know that you'll need a lot of them to cover a stay here. During off-peak dates in February, Kyle was able to find rooms available for as few as 70,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. Based on my own research, though, award nights are tough to find. On the few dates I found with availability, the property was charging 187,400 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Expand your search to options using a combination of points and cash and you'll find more availability. I came across redemptions ranging from $339 plus 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night to a whopping $942 plus 140,000 Bonvoy points per night, depending on the dates I selected. While these prices are tough to stomach, they are not that surprising given Bora Bora's reputation as a pricey piece of paradise to visit.

Bottom line

I always thought Bora Bora would be a truly magical place to visit, and my trip there did not disappoint. While you'll likely spend a considerable amount of money (or points and miles) to vacation here once you factor in flights to this remote tropical paradise and accommodations in a high-end option overlooking the lagoon, if there is ever a destination to splurge on, I would have to say that Bora Bora is it.

When you're not taking advantage of all your luxe resort has to offer, you can explore the tranquil waters full of marine life or get your heart racing during an ATV excursion on land, among other activities. Or, you could just soak up some sun from the deck of your overwater bungalow and call it a day.

Regardless of what you end up doing, the variety of experiences and truly world-class accommodations should ensure that your trip there will be just as enjoyable as mine was.

Why use Wander in Paradise to book a trip to Bora Bora?

It is very convenient to use a travel agency and they do a great job in general. However, booking your trip to Bora Bora yourself comes with a few important advantages:

  • you save a lot on the agency fees
  • you’re more aware of all the options available
  • you’re aware of cheaper options
  • in case of a cancellation (flight, accommodation, and tours) you can quickly act on a solution
  • you are in total control of your trip to Bora Bora

A travel agency can have interesting vacation packages that can be cheaper, but that’s not always the case. While in some countries, a Travel agency can offer interesting packages, in general, you don’t end up paying less.

You think you pay for an all-inclusive trip to Bora Bora, but in the end, each aspect booked for you by the agency comes with an extra price tag. And many hidden costs will appear on the bill after all. Think of meals not included, drinks not included, shuttle services, tours, and so on.

Extra costs won’t be a surprise when you receive a bill afterward. You book a trip to Bora Bora yourself with the help of Wander in Paradise, you are in total control of your vacation.

How to book a trip to Bora Bora yourself?

  • Decide on the time of year and dates you want to go
  • Check for flights that fit your plans
  • Check accommodation
  • Book your trip altogether
  • Tours in Bora Bora can wait for when your trip is booked

So these are the basic steps you need to follow to book your trip to Bora Bora yourself. But these are the simple steps. In reality, it’s more complicated but once you get the hang of it, you’ll see that you can plan any vacation to paradise yourself.

Time needed:  3 hours

How to book a trip to Bora Bora in 8 steps.

How your trip to Bora Bora is going to look like depends on your budget. Decide on the amount you have available for a vacation in Bora Bora.

To book a trip to Bora Bora, you can decide on the dates first. If you’re flexible regarding the dates, the low season might be a good option with cheaper rates available for flights and accommodation.

Wander in Paradise recommends searching for flights to Bora Bora for your dates first, but don’t book them yet until you also find your accommodation.

While the ultimate Bora Bora experience involves a stay at an overwater bungalow, the island nowadays has cheaper options available as well.

When your accommodation matches the flights available, you can book both.

While Bora Bora Tours can be booked last minute, some of them tend to sell out or become unavailable on some days because of private tours. That’s why Wander in Paradise recommends to secure your spot as soon as possible.

While you might not use travel insurance when going on a short city trip, for such a unique vacation with several flights involved, we recommend taking local travel insurance.

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Check if you need a visa to enter French Polynesia.

How to book flights to Bora Bora?

Located in the South Pacific, there are only two ways to get to Tahiti. Less popular are the cruise ships from the mainland of the US or Canada as they are not allowed in the islands. Only some smaller cruises leaving from Tahiti are allowed to drop the anchor in Bora Bora.

The easiest way to visit Bora Bora is by taking the plane from one of the larger airports in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and a few more. They land in Tahiti after which you take a connecting flight to Bora Bora with either Air Moana or Air Tahiti.

The flight route depends on where you are located. The easiest is to fly from Los Angeles, US (LAX) and San Fransisco, US (SFO). You can choose from several airlines including Air Tahiti Nui , Air Frane/KLM, United Airlines, and since not too long budget airline French Bee. All flights from Paris pass through LAX, Los Angeles, or SFO, San Fransisco. However, what route is best for you will become clear when you use the easy flight search engine below from Kiwi.

The biggest advantage of using Kiwi is that it comes up with flight routes that other engines don’t pick up. It’s the number 1 flight checker for your trip to Bora Bora.

How to use the Kiwi widget below:

  • You’re probably looking for a return flight. If so, you don’t have to change anything here.
  • Pick your preferred travel class.
  • Add the number of Adults, Children, and Infants.
  • Here you let Kiwi know if you want to bring Cabin Baggage and/or Checked Baggage.
  • Make sure you select the currency you are most comfortable with
  • From (pick the airport closest to your home)
  • To (Bora Bora airport BOB)
  • If you have your dates, make sure to select them using the calendar.
  • Otherwise, just keep it on “Anytime” and Kiwi will come up with some random travel options.
  • Click Search

When you find the perfect flight itinerary, you can easily book the flights using the Kiwi widget below. Click “book” and you’ll be sent to the partner site Kiwi where you’ll be able to book the flights at no extra cost for you.

Accommodation in Bora Bora

Without flights, you won’t end up in Bora Bora, but without accommodation, no vacation in Bora Bora. That’s why accommodation is such an important part of this How to Book a Trip to Bora Bora Yourself roadmap. The most complicated part of the accommodation is to decide what type of accommodation you prefer to stay.

What type of accommodation you prefer also depends on a few matters:

  • your budget
  • the time you spend on the island
  • if you want easy access to the main island
  • if you want easy access to restaurants, shops, and things to do in Bora Bora
  • In this category, you find all resorts on the motu and main island (La Moana). They offer a mix of overwater bungalows, beach bungalows, overwater villas, and beach villas.
  • In this category, I added truly unique accommodations that don’t belong to a resort. This can be a beachfront villa on a motu or exclusive accommodation on the mainland that stands out from the common places to stay.
  • All villas are located on the seafront with direct access to the lagoon and that are not already mentioned in the Exclusive category.
  • Hotels can be found on the main island and offer traditional accommodations. Less luxurious, these accommodations are cheaper but still offer a great level of service and Polynesian hospitality.
  • This category offers spacious accommodations in Bora Bora that are not on the seafront or on a motu.
  • In this category, you find accommodations that are recommended if you travel to Bora Bora on a budget. From home

Bora Bora travel tips. What we learned on our French Polynesia family vacation

What we learned on our trip to French Polynesia

As we reflect our our first trip to French Polynesia , we want to share some of the things we learned on this family vacation to the South Pacific. The idyllic island of Bora Bora is the star attraction in the Society Islands archipelago, so the focus of this post is Bora Bora travel tips.

However, given that most visitors to French Polynesia will arrive via Tahiti , we’ll also share some general travel tips for exploring the islands.

We spent a total of 14 nights in French Polynesia:

  • 2 nights in Tahiti at Te Moana Tahiti Resort
  • 4 nights in Moorea at Manava Beach Resort (read review here )
  • 6 nights in Bora Bora at Hotel Royal Bora Bora
  • 2 nights back at Te Moana Resort before departing home.

We were only supposed to stay 1 night at Te Moana Tahiti Resort on the back end, before flying home. However, our return flight on Air Tahiti Nui was cancelled. It was stressful sorting out the new flights, but also nice to spend one more night in paradise.

Read about what happened here (scroll to the bottom of the post).

What you need to know about travel to Bora Bora

There are several Bora Bora travel tips that we learned on this trip to French Polynesia.

First, Bora Bora is a very expensive travel destination. The rumors are true. We’ll share a few thoughts on the average cost of a trip to Bora Bora below.

Second, all international flights arrive via Tahiti International Airport (Faa’a International Airport in Papeete). This means you will need to organize a connecting Bora Bora flight from Tahiti. More on that below.

Third, the languages spoken in Bora Bora are Tahitian and French. However, due to tourism, English is widely spoken and understood. We did not have any trouble communicating.

Fourth, there are no all-inclusive resorts in Bora Bora. Some Bora Bora vacation packages include flights, hotel, transfers and breakfast, but all meals and drinks are NOT included.

The currency of Bora Bora is the French Pacific Franc (XPF and CFP Franc). Although exchange rates will vary, it’s approx. 100 XPF to $1 USD. You will need cash, but credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants. More on that below.

The main island only has one true public beach. If you’re staying on the main island, consider a hotel that’s located close to Matira Beach (pictured above). This is arguably the nicest beach in Bora Bora.

Finally, all visitors who arrive at Bora Bora Airport will need to take a ferry. The luxurious resorts have private boats that depart from the airport. However, if you’re staying on the main island, you will take the free public ferry from Bora Bora Airport to Vaitape , the largest city of Bora Bora.

What is the best month to go to Bora Bora?

This is arguably the most common question – when is the best time to visit Bora Bora and the islands in French Polynesia?

There are conflicting answers. And, the answer depends on your travel style and budget.

If you’re looking for deals, avoid the peak season, which is considered May to October . This is the ‘dry season’. Peak season means peak prices and peak volume of visitors. This also means less availability for flights, hotels and activities.

To avoid the crowds and save money, consider the low season, which is from November to April.

So, if the question is actually what is the cheapest month to visit Bora Bora, then the answer would be November and April. These are the shoulder season months.

Or, if the question is what is the best time to travel to Bora Bora for perfect weather conditions , the answer would be May to October. This would coincide with North America’s summer months.

We visited in April. It did rain during our visit . At least once or twice per day, but the rain only lasts for 15-30 minutes. Then the sun comes back out and it’s hot again.

Is there ever a bad time to visit Bora Bora? I don’t think so.

Bora Bora travel tips - the best luxury hotels with overwater bungalows on Bora Bora island

How many days is enough in Bora Bora?

This is probably the second most commonly asked question. There is no right or wrong answer. However, it’s important to note that Bora Bora is the most expensive island of French Polynesia.

We spent 6 nights on Bora Bora’s main island. It’s more budget friendly to stay on the main island, when compared to the fancy 5 star resorts on the outer islands.

Is 4 days in Bora Bora enough?

Yes, 4 days is enough time to experience Bora Bora. This will give you time to enjoy the resort and do a few excursions, like snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and/or exploring the island by jeep.

Generally speaking, most people spend 3-4 nights in Bora Bora. When you include an overnight in Tahiti upon arrival, plus one more night in Tahiti before departing home, plus the flight time – this would be a typical one week vacation.

Bora Bora travel tips - the best luxury hotels with overwater bungalows on Bora Bora island

What are the best all-inclusive resorts in Bora Bora?

This one is a bit confusing because Bora Bora’s most popular resorts are NOT all-inclusive .

If you search for Bora Bora All Inclusive Vacation Packages or Top All-inclusive Resorts in Bora Bora ,  you will get results that show all-inclusive options.

This is misleading because none of the Bora Bora hotels include all meals and unlimited drinks.

You will find resorts that do include food. For example, the Four Seasons Resort has the option to include breakfast (additional fee) and hotel transfers. And Intercontinental Resorts can include breakfast and dinner (for additional fee, not including alcohol).

However, not all food and drinks are included. You will pay extra for lunch, dinner and drinks. And these menus are not cheap.

You will need to carefully select what you want included with your Bora Bora hotel. Some Bora Bora vacation packages will include the inter-island flights plus hotel, breakfast and transfers. And many of these resorts will include activities and equipment, like kayaks, snorkel equipment and paddleboards.

BUT – is it really an all-inclusive resort if not all food and drinks are included? We don’t think so.

This is the same in Tahiti. Many of the Tahiti resorts advertise as being all-inclusive, but do not actually include all food and drinks.

Bora Bora travel tips - view of volcano from Bora Bora airport

How much does it really cost to go to Bora Bora?

This is another tough question to answer.

Generally speaking, a trip to Bora Bora will cost between $5,000 to $15,000+.

It depends on where you stay (budget vs luxury), how long you stay (3 nights vs 6 nights), and what you want to do on your Bora Bora vacation (cost per activity).

How much is a 7 day vacation to Bora Bora?

Let’s put flights to Bora Bora on the side for a moment, because the price for airline tickets will impact the total cost of your Bora Bora trip. Not surprising, many visitors to French Polynesia travel from France, which is much more expensive than traveling from New Zealand or Australia.

Although the overwater bungalows are bucket-list worthy, the price is typically $1,000+ per night.

You can save money by staying in a garden suite or the main building at the resort. Rates for these rooms range from $300-$1,000 per night, depending on the resort and time of visit.

Even if your Bora Bora resort includes breakfast, you will still need to pay for lunch and dinner. I would estimate at least $250-$500 CAD per day for food and drinks. More if you like to drink a lot and/or you have expensive taste. For example, a pint of beer inside a resort is $15-$20 CAD.

Other items to include in your budget are the costs for daily excursions. This expense is highly variable, depending on what you choose to do. Budget $500-$1,500 for activities.

outdoor pool at Hotel Royal Bora Bora on main island of Bora Bora, French Polynesia vacation

Families of Four (or more) might need TWO hotel rooms!

You read that correctly. Most hotels in Bora Bora have a 3 guest maximum rule. Even if the 4th person is a child under the age of 10 years old.

We spent hours and hours researching Bora Bora hotel prices and availability. For us, it’s important that the hotel has a pool, because our boys love swimming on vacation. Adding the pool requirement reduces the number of available options, including vacation apartment rentals .

We searched the main online booking engines, like Hotels.com , Booking.com and Expedia.com . We had very few options to book 1 room with 4 people. And the few we found were over $2000 per night. Initially, we thought it was a glitch with the booking engines.

So, we reached out to the hotels directly. The hotels we contacted confirmed that their rooms have a 3 person maximum.

This meant we had to pay for 2 rooms (each night) to find a more affordable rate.

Fortunately, we found a good deal at Hotel Royal Bora Bora . We spent approx. $250 per night x 2 rooms = $500 per night total. We will write a full review about our experience this hotel soon. Spoiler – it’s good value and we enjoyed our stay.

Our hotel includes a breakfast buffet, which helps save a lot of money. We would go for breakfast later in the morning, around 9:00 am. Then we would skip lunch and have an early dinner. This saved us at least $150 per day.

Do you have to stay in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora?

Building on the above, you do NOT have to stay in an overwater bungalow.

Yes – these bungalows are dreamy and fancy. And, yes, they are a bucket list experience. BUT, if you don’t have the budget to splurge on an expensive overwater bungalow, don’t let that stop you from visiting Bora Bora.

There are budget-friendly hotels in Bora Bora and the other French Polynesia islands.

However, you might need to shift your definition of budget-friendly when you visit French Polynesia. It’s still going to be expensive, but less expensive.

Consider staying at Hotel Maitai Polynesia Bora Bora which does offer cheaper overwater bungalow options (they were sold out when we went) or Hotel Royal Bora Bora . Both are located on the main island.

Or, consider a vacation rental ( like this one) located on Matira Beach.

Do you need cash in Bora Bora and Tahiti?

Yes, you will need some local currency for your Bora Bora vacation.

Most taxis require cash (there is no Uber) and many of the food trucks and small vendors prefer cash.

The French Polynesia currency is the CFP Franc (XPF). The CFP Franc is used in Tahiti and other French Polynesian islands, including Bora Bora and Moorea .

The exchange rate is fixed at 1 Euro = 119.33 XPF. At the time of writing, $1 US = 108 XPF and $1 CAD = 82 XPF. Check your currency conversation here .

If you’re an organized planner, consider purchasing XPF at home before you depart for Tahiti. Otherwise, use the ATM when you arrive at Tahiti International Airport.

How Much to Tip in Bora Bora?

The short answer – it depends.

Tipping is not a customary or expected in French Polynesia. Gratuity is appreciated, but not required.

Many hotels and restaurants include a service charge. Check your bill before adding gratuity.

As for how much to tip in Bora Bora – that’s a personal choice. There is no standard tip amount in Bora Bora . You can tip whatever you feel is appropriate based on the service you receive, similar to how it works in Europe.

How to save money on food in French Polynesia

Food is very expensive in French Polynesia. Many items have to be shipped, so this increases prices.

The easiest way to save money is to purchase food at the small grocery stores. However, if you’re staying at one of the luxury resorts on the private islands, you don’t have a lot of options besides the hotel restaurants.

Tiare Market (pictured below) is located between Hotel Maitai Polynesia  and Hotel Royal Bora Bora . It’s a 5 minute walk from these hotels.

Every day, Tiare Market offers fresh pastries, bread and baked goods. And they sell prepacked meals and sandwiches, along with snacks, cold drinks and alcohol. If you like to drink beer and wine, you will save a lot of money by purchasing these items from the market instead of the hotel restaurant bar.

Another option is eating at food trucks, called roulettes. These vendors are popular with local residents. They give large portions and are typically cheaper than restaurants. We often shared meals with our kids because the portions are large.

Also – consider booking a hotel that includes breakfast. Our hotel did include a nice breakfast buffet, which saved us a lot of money. We would grab a few croissants and apples for the road.

What is the best way to visit different French Polynesia islands?

There are two airlines that offer flights to the different islands: Air Moana and Air Tahiti .

Air Tahiti is the more established brand, because it’s been around for many years.

Air Moana is a new airline that started in 2023. They have newer planes but are still getting their operations going.

We used both Air Tahiti and Air Moana. Both are good airlines.

For direct flights from Tahiti to Bora Bora, Air Moana is a bit cheaper than Air Tahiti.

It is important to book your flights once you know your schedule. Flights do sell out. Once you’ve confirmed your trip, it’s wise to book your inter-island flights ASAP in order to get the days and times you want. Don’t put this off until later, otherwise you might be disappointed.

Bora Bora travel tips – when flying from Bora Bora to Tahiti, get the window seat on the RIGHT side of the plane. Here’s why !

Consider purchasing the Air Tahiti Multi-islands Pass

Air Tahiti offers an Air Tahiti Multi-islands pass. It’s a better deal than buying individual flights separately. This is the way to go if you plan to visit multiple islands in French Polynesia.

Learn about the flight passes here .

The most popular option is the Bora Bora Pass .

Read the rules carefully as the Air Tahiti Multi-Island Pass does come with a few restrictions and rules.

It’s possible Air Moana might offer a similar pass in the future. However, we did not find this option available at the time of writing this post.

Can you take a ferry to Bora Bora?

Yes, there is a ferry that travels from Tahiti to Bora Bora and the other islands.

We took a ferry from Tahiti to Moorea. It was the 45 minute fast ferry. The swells made our kids feel sea sick. We’ve read comments about the Tahiti ferry experience. Many people shared similar stories of big swells and sea sickness.

There are ferry options that take you to different islands in French Polynesia. They are cheaper than flying. However, the ferries don’t run every day, unless it’s a popular route like Tahiti to Moorea.

If you’re tight on time, it’s best to fly from Tahiti to Bora Bora.

Terevau is a fast ferry that goes from Tahiti to Moorea multiple times a day. View the schedule here .

Don’t trust the Tahiti weather apps

Prior to booking our trip to Tahiti, we read that it’s a good idea to look at the weather apps. Given that we visited in April, at the tail end of the ‘wet season’, we were concerned that our beach vacation would be impacted by the rain.

We opened the weather app while sitting in the airport before our flight from Seattle to Tahiti . It showed thunderstorms and rain EVERY day, for the entire 2 weeks of our vacation.

Not a good start. We started to second guess our timing.

However, when we arrived in Tahiti, we realized that the weather apps were not accurate.

Yes, it would rain, but only for 15-30 minutes. Then it would be all sunshine and hot temperatures. Watch this short video from our trip.

The lesson – don’t get too worried if you see rain or thundershowers on the weather apps, regardless if you are visiting in the dry season or rainy season. The timing of the showers might impact an excursion or delay a tour, but don’t let that rattle you. The rain will pass soon enough.

Should you fly Air Tahiti Nui to Tahiti?

We flew Air Tahiti Nui from Seattle to Tahiti. It’s a non-stop direct flight that takes about 9.5 hours. Read about our experience here .

At the time of publishing this post, there are no direct French Polynesia flights from Canada. Air Tahiti Nui offers weekly direct flights from Seattle to Tahiti, Papeete.

However, if you’re flying through Los Angeles or San Francisco, there are more flight options on other airlines, including French Bee, Air France or United .

A downside to flying with Air Tahiti Nui is that it has a small fleet of planes. Therefore, if there’s a delay or mechanical issue with one of its aircraft, this will have a significant ripple effect. It happened to us.

Bora Bora travel tips – Air Tahiti and Air Tahiti Nui are two separate airlines. It’s unnecessarily confusing.

Arriving at Tahiti International Airport

Another one of our Bora Bora travel tips is to pack an easily accessible change of clothes in your carry-on bag. Before you disembark the airplane, change into lighter clothes – shirt, shorts, etc.

The line for immigration moves slow, and it’s very humid and muggy in the line. There is no air conditioning in this area of the airport, so you will get sweaty.

Is it safe to walk around Bora Bora?

In short – yes. It is safe for tourists to walk around Bora Bora. It’s actually one of the safest holiday destinations in the world. Being only 12 square miles in size, and with a population of about 11,000 people, Bora Bora has very low crime levels.

Can you drink tap water in Bora Bora?

You can drink tap water in Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora and at most international resorts. It is usually fine in family hotels but it’s recommended to you ask your hosts for confirmation.

What to pack for Bora Bora vacation

One the best Bora Bora travel tips is to pack light. You will not need as much stuff as you think. You don’t need multiple jackets, sweaters and jeans/pants.

It’s very hot and humid in Tahiti, so you really don’t need a lot of clothes. Even if you’re staying at one of the fancy resorts, you’ll likely be in a bathing suit most of the time.

Below are a few essentials for your Bora Bora packing list:

  • Reef shoes – protect your feet and the coral reef. Also note that stonefish (highly venomous fish) are found here. Wearing reef shoes will help in the event that you accidently step on one.
  • Snorkel set ( full face or regular ) – you’re likely to be in the water a lot. It’s nice to have your own snorkeling equipment so you can go in the water whenever you like. Plus, who wants to use a community mouth piece?
  • Reef safe sunblock – some hotels provide reef safe sunblock for free, but you will want your own for excursions. Help protect the ocean by using reef-safe sunblock.
  • After sun – The sun is hot in Tahiti. It’s best to have something to put on for accidental sunburns
  • Bug spray – went visited in April and got bitten by mosquitos.
  • Sun shirts / swimming shirts – the sun is very hot so you will want a water shirt for snorkeling.
  • Multiple sun glasses and hats – in case you loose a hat or break your sun glasses.
  • Multiple bathing suits – you will need a few.
  • Underwater camera – to capture reef sharks and the amazing underwater world .
  • Universal adapter with multiple USB ports – most hotels have few outlets and some require European plugs. We use this one and it works great.
  • Towel – most hotels provide towels, but we do like to bring this light weight towel for excursions.

Hi. Thanks for your info. Especially appreciate the packing list and weather info. Hoping you can tell me if there’s lockers for suitcases at Papeete airport. I’m getting off a cruise ship but not flying out until several hours later. Hoping to spend some times shopping in Papeete market and obviously don’t want to haul around luggage.

Hi Karen – I do not know if there are lockers at the airport. I would assume so, but I cannot confirm this.

Planning the perfect summer trip can take weeks of research, preparation, and organization to ensure it goes off without a hitch. But before you get to the planning and booking phase, you'll need to decide where to go. There's a seemingly endless amount of great options out there, and while there's nothing wrong with heading to the same familiar spot over and over again, sometimes you want to get a little off the beaten path and go somewhere you haven't been before. Whether you're in the mood for a nature escape with jaw-dropping vistas, hiking paths, and secluded lodges, or are looking for a big city excursion surrounded by trendy restaurants, unique neighborhoods, and great shopping, we've got ideas for you.

From islands to national parks , here are 15 underrated summer travel ideas, perfect for avoiding the crowds while you explore someplace new.

Domestic destinations:

Finger Lakes, New York | Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota | Isle Royale National Park, Michigan | Catalina Island, California | San Juan Islands, Washington | Crystal River, Florida

International destinations:

Kosovo | Budapest, Hungary | Copenhagen, Denmark | Buenos Aires, Argentina | Sardinia, Italy | Mauritius | Kyoto, Japan | Bora Bora | Quebec, Canada

Finger Lakes, New York

A fan-favorite of New York City residents, the New York Finger Lakes are unquestionably idyllic. The perfect destination for a summer weekend , or a weeklong trip with the family, this region is home to some of the most beautiful waterfronts. Dotted with adorable small towns , the 11 long, slender lakes that make up this area are exactly what East Coast summer dreams are made of. Spend your trip navigating nearby state parks; hiking, biking, and exploring; and enjoying everything that lake life has to offer, from jet-skiing to swimming.

Where to stay: Check out the Gould Hotel , a modern boutique property in Seneca Falls; book a night at The Lake House on Canandaigua for an airy, design-forward stay; or head east to the Inns of Aurora .

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Completely immerse yourself in nature at Minnesota's Voyageurs National Park. This gorgeous destination is ideal for getting in some of the best stargazing you could ever imagine. Just like dozens of other national parks , this one has an International Dark Sky Park certificate, designating it as a location that is particularly good for viewing the night sky and stars. Unlike the others, however, Voyageurs is one of the least-visited national parks in the country, meaning you'll be able to truly connect with nature and enjoy seclusion. It's ideal for boat rides and swimming, as it's primarily made up of waterfronts and islands—almost 40 percent of the park is water.

Where to stay: Nearby Cantilever Hotel is great for those interested in exploring the park, but not wanting to stay too far away from civilization. Those who are a little more daring will enjoy the Kettle Falls Hotel , a property that is only accessible by boat or seaplane. If you're really looking to be one with nature, you can rent a canoe and camp at a tent site.

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

If you're looking for a summer vacation where you can explore an area relatively untouched by civilization, look no further than Isle Royale National Park . A favorite of my family, this park is uniquely difficult to get to (the main island is best reached by ferry), so the only other travelers you'll find here are extreme adventurers and in-the-know locals. It's best to visit during the summer months since Lake Superior is quite cold and foggy throughout the rest of the year. My family heads to this park in the summer months in hopes of spending a few days backpacking , canoeing, and hiking through the near-untouched environment—admiring the nature and wildlife along the way.

Or, book this nearby rustic Airbnb cabin with panoramic views of Lake Superior for the days leading up to your national park visit.

15 Underrated Summer Travel Ideas for 2024

Catalina Island, California

Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Los Angeles , Santa Catalina Island is quite literally heaven on Earth. Hopeful travelers can either take the one-hour Catalina Express ferry over to the island (it departs daily from San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point) or charter a private yacht to get them there in style. Whether you're looking to hike the Trans Catalina Trail or simply indulge in some tasty seafood while wandering through the quaint town of Avalon, Catalina Island is a great break from the hustle and bustle of LA. Head a bit farther inland to explore El Rancho Escondido , the acclaimed Arabian horse ranch that's also home to Rusack Vineyards.

Where to stay: For day-trippers or those who plan to extend their vacation to include a stay in Los Angeles, there are a variety of hotels and Airbnbs to choose from, including The Beverly Hills Hotel, Dorchester Collection , The Malibu Beach Inn , and the luxe Chateau Marmont Estate on Airbnb. If you're hoping to stay on-island, the plush Bellanca Hotel is the way to go.

15 Underrated Summer Travel Ideas for 2024

San Juan Islands, Washington

A 2019 Readers' Choice Award winner, named one of the best islands for beautiful scenery, this collection of more than 400 islands off the coast of Washington is ideal for a Pacific Northwest weekend getaway. The three most popular (and largest) islands to explore are Orcas , San Juan, and Lopez—all easily accessible by ferry. Travelers can enjoy a laidback vacation with comfortable temperatures and a relaxed atmosphere: hop on a bike and explore the area; spend time sailing, hiking, and fishing; or take a walk to admire all of the islands' natural beauty, from the mountains to the lakes.

Where to stay: Glampers, campers, and regular hotel-goers will all adore the Lakedale which has accommodations for every type of traveler.

Crystal River, Florida

Home to one of the best beaches in Florida , Crystal River is unlike most other cities you'll find in the Sunshine State for one major reason: It's one of the only places in the world where people can swim alongside manatees . If you've ever wanted to truly get up close to these gentle giants, this is the city to visit. Head to the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge to see your fill of the endangered animal, and spend some time taking in the natural beauty of the nearby springs and parks.

Where to stay: The Plantation Resort on Crystal River is home to a variety of different activities including a 27-hole championship golf course and a family-friendly resort with 196 accommodations.

It's also worth checking out the Tivoli Gardens, Rosenborg Castle, and the picturesque Nyhavn harbor .

Where to stay: Check out our favorite hotels in Copenhagen , including the grand and historic Hotel d'Angleterre , the Nimb Hotel which was originally built as a castle in 1909, and the modern Villa Copenhagen .

Buenos Aires, Argentina

There's so much more to Sardinia than just a beautiful coastline and wonderful beaches. Another location on our list of the Best Places to Go in 2024, Mauritius is about 1,200 miles east of Madagascar . From its gorgeous coastlines with pristine beaches to the luxury accommodations and unparalleled nature, this island destination is nothing short of paradise. Head here during the Northern Hemisphere's summer months to avoid wet season. Ace Hotel Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan

Instead of heading to the mega-popular Tokyo or the bright and lively Osaka, consider touching down in Kyoto , one of the best cities to experience traditional Japanese culture. Spend the day exploring the temples and shrines that are dotted throughout the city; take a walk through Gion, the “Geisha District;” or while away a few hours in the Kyoto National Museum. The best times to visit Japan are at the very end or beginning of summer when the season overlaps with spring and fall, and while it'll certainly be a bit warmer during the peaks of summer, it's no less beautiful.

Where to stay: From the Ace Hotel to the Shinmonzen , there is no shortage of great hotels in Central Kyoto. If you're interested in something a little different, tour guide Sara Aiko from Traveler 's Ask a Local series recommends taking a trip to Moksa , a gorgeous property in the north of Kyoto surrounded by temples and nature.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui French Polynesia

Nothing says romance like staying in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora. The winter in French Polynesia corresponds with the summer in the Northern Hemisphere, meaning June, July, and August experience less humid and more comfortable temperatures. This time period also falls during Tahiti 's dry season, so you don't have to worry about being rained out. You could easily spend your days simply lounging in your bungalow and slipping into the crystal waters whenever you feel, but Bora Bora is also ideal for snorkeling, scuba diving, and taking a boat or a 4x4 island tour.

Where to stay: Bora Bora is particularly known for its luxury overwater bungalows. Conrad Bora Bora Nui is a more private option with exceptional snorkeling and coral, The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is perfect for honeymooners and families alike, and the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is home to over 100 bungalows, fine dining, and an exceptional spa.

Quebec, Canada

When you think of summer travel, your first thought is probably an island getaway or a far-flung destination that you've only read about in books. But, don't overlook all of the beauty that our northern neighbor has to offer. Quebec City is home to all the same type of charm you'll find in Europe but without the exceptionally long flight to get there. Spend some time in Old Quebec City —home to some of the oldest streets in North America—taking in the history and culture that make this city worthy of its title as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Or, head to Montreal , where you can enjoy a variety of museums, the open-air market, and great culinary options. Don't forget to explore the nature and French architecture found in the greater province.

Where to stay: For a wonderful stay in Quebec City, Hotel 71 is a six-time Readers' Choice Award winner while Auberge Saint Antoine Quebec City and Le Germain Hotel Quebec are both five-time winners. For a wellness-focused retreat , head to Monastère des Augustines . In Montreal , check out the Auberge du Vieux-Port on the St. Lawrence River, or Hotel William Gray in Old Montreal.

The Red Square, Kremlin and St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow at night © Mordolff / Getty Images

One of the world’s largest cities, Moscow is a true metropolis whose ancient neighbourhoods are interspersed with newly built high-rises, inhabited by people from all over the former Soviet Union.

It’s also the city of rings: the innermost is the Kremlin itself; further away are the former defensive rings, Boulevard Ring and Garden Ring; still further are the Third Ring Road and the MKAD, which delineates the city’s borders. There’s an ongoing joke that Moscow Mayor is the Lord of the Rings. Most sights are contained within the Garden Ring, although for some more authentic neighbourhoods one has to venture further out. To help you explore Moscow’s diversity, we picked our favourite ’hoods – but this list is by no means exhaustive.

Evening view of Moscow's Red Square from the Kremlin towards St Basil's Cathedral

The Red Square and around

It can be argued that Moscow, or even the whole of Russia, starts at the  Red Square  – it’s an absolute must-see for any visitor. After standing in line to check out Lenin’s granite  mausoleum , go to GUM , Moscow's oldest department store. Full of luxury shops, it’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov. Apart from architectural wonders, GUM has several places to eat including the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 where you can sample mysterious-sounding delicacies such as the ‘herring in a fur coat’.

On the opposite side of GUM, Kremlin ’s walls and towers rise above the Red Square. Walk through the Alexander Garden  and past the grotto to the Kremlin’s entrance. It’s a treasure trove for any art and history lover: ancient gold-domed churches, icons galore and the resting place of Moscow tsars.

On the other side of the Red Square is Moscow's symbol,  St Basil's Cathedral with its multi-colored domes. Right behind it is the newly built Zaryadye Park , which showcases flora from all over Russia; another attraction is the floating bridge jutting out above the embankment and the Moscow river. A glass pavilion nearby hosts Voskhod , a space-themed restaurant with dishes from all 15 former Soviet Union republics. It’s a perfect spot for a classy evening meal and there’s often live music.

People chilling out at a pond in central Moscow on a summer day

Patriarch’s Ponds

The Patriarch’s Ponds (aka Patriki) is a historical neighbourhood, celebrated in Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita . Located right off Tverskaya street, Moscow’s main thoroughfare, Patriki recently became the city’s most happening quarter. It has some of the most elegant architecture, including several buildings by art-nouveau genius Fyodor Shekhtel. Narrow streets here have a cozy feel, with recently widened sidewalks and bike lanes. In the summer it becomes party central.

Start by checking out free exhibitions or one of the cutting-edge performances at the experimental theatre Praktika . But make no mistake, the neighbourhood’s main attraction are its bars and restaurants. Patriki’s residents are well-off Russians and expats, so it’s no wonder that  Moscow’s recent culinary revolution started here. Uilliam’s , one of the pioneers of this foodie movement, still rules over the scene with its floor-to-ceiling windows. Also try AQ Chicken  for everything chicken-related, Patara  for a taste of Georgian cuisine, and Cutfish for some great sushi. Finish your gastronomic tour with original cocktails at Pinch or the Moscow outpost of NYC restaurant Saxon+Parole .

Old red-brick buildings of the former Arma factory in Moscow

Around Kursky train station

For a long time, Kursky train station was surrounded by semi-abandoned factories and the area was best avoided. It all changed in the late 2000s, when a dilapidated wine factory was turned into Winzavod , a mecca for fans of contemporary art. Today these red-brick buildings are occupied by some of Moscow’s leading galleries. After taking in all the art, pop in the small wine bar Barrell  for a glass from burgeoning wineries of Russia’s south or grab a bite at Khitrye Lyudi  cafe.

Right next to Winzavod is Artplay , another refurbished factory full of design and furniture shops and large exhibition spaces.  It’s also home to  Pluton , one of the latest additions to Moscow’s dance scene. Other Pluton residents are the multimedia art gallery Proun  and another lunch option,  Shanhaika , with authentic Chinese cuisine.

A short walk away is Arma, where a cluster of circular gas holders has been turned into offices, restaurants and clubs including Gazgolder  (it belongs to one of Russia’s most famous rappers, Basta). Apart from hip-hop concerts, Gazgolder organises regular techno parties that sometimes go non-stop from Friday to Monday.

Colourful facade and onion-shaped domes of a Russian Orthodox church in Moscow

If you’re interested in religious architecture, Taganka is the place to go. First of all, see the old Moscow at Krutitskoye Podvorye – one of those places where nothing seems to have changed in centuries. The monastery was founded in the 13th century, but in the 16th century it became the home of Moscow metropolitans and most of the surviving buildings are from that epoch. Take a tour of the grounds, and don’t miss the interior and icons of the Assumption Cathedral.

Your next stop is the Rogozhskoe settlement of ‘old believers’, a branch that split from Russian Orthodoxy in the 17th century. The settlement is dominated by an 80m-tall bell tower. The yellow-coloured Intercession Church, built in neoclassical style with baroque elements, has an important collection of icons. Next to the church grounds is the popular Trapeznaya cafeteria, with Russian food cooked using traditional recipes – a perfect spot for lunch.

A short ride away is Andronikov Monastery, which today houses the Rublyov Museum  in the old monks’ quarters. There’s a great collection of ancient Orthodox icons although none by Andrei Rublyov, who was a monk here in the 15th century. The main attraction at the monastery is the small Saviour’s Cathedral, considered the oldest surviving church in Moscow.

Finish the day at the craft-beer cluster around Taganskaya metro station. Varka offers both Russian and imported labels, with the Burger Heroes stand serving arguably the best burgers in town. Craft & Draft looks more like a respectable old-fashioned pub, with decent food, 20 beers on tap and a hundred types of bottled brews.

Elaborate facade with statues and balcony on a mansion in Moscow

Khamovniki is Moscow’s ancient textile district, named after the word kham  (a type of cloth). Two main thoroughfares, Ostozhenka and Prechistenka, cut through the neighbourhood parallel to each other. The former turned into the so-called ‘Golden Mile’ of Moscow in the 1990s, with the highest real-estate prices and some of the best examples of new Russian architecture, while the latter is still mostly lined up with impressive 19th-century mansions.

Khamovniki is somewhat of a literary quarter, as several museums devoted to Russia’s best-known writers – among them  Leo Tolstoy , Alexander Pushkin  and Ivan Turgenev – popped up here during the last century. There’s also plenty to see for an art lover. The  Multimedia Art Museum regularly hosts exhibitions by some of the best photographers from all over the world, as well as contemporary art. Several galleries, including RuArts  and Kournikova Gallery , have also found home in Khamovniki.

When you’ve had your fill of literature and art, stop by Gorod Sad on Ostozhenka, an outpost of a local health-food chain, and order dishes such as pumpkin soup or grilled vegetables salads. Afterwards, head to Dom 12 , which is located just off Ostozhenka street. This restaurant and wine bar is frequented by the city’s intellectuals and its schedule includes lectures, book presentations and film screenings, while in the summer guests migrate to a lovely courtyard.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

  • Guide to Russia

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow
  • Admire world-class architecture: Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers has distinctive architecture and design
  • Learn something new: Visit the Museum of High-Rise Architecture in Moscow or the Metro Museum

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Afimall is Moscow’s largest entertainment and shopping complex, home to 450 shops, cafes and restaurants, a cinema, and a virtual-reality game park. The shopping centre is located in the central section of Moscow City, and a cinema and concert hall are currently under construction there.

What’s nearby?

Sechenov Botanical Gardens: The botanical gardens of the First Moscow State Medical University was created for students’ training and research in 1946. Today it is open for free visits, and is home to a large arboretum.

Park Krasnaya Presnya: This park belonged to the Studenets estate of the Gagarin princes. It is a monument of 18th and 19th century landscaping, with Dutch ponds, ornate bridges, and tree-lined alleys. There are also sports facilities, sports equipment rental, and cafes.
