Glasgow Cathedral also boasts one of the finest post-war collections of stained glass windows found in Great Britain. If you have time, visit the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art located right next to the Cathedral, where you can learn about the Saint Patron who brought Christianity to Scotland.

Cruise Port Guide Greenock – Scotland: docked

Cruise ships dock at Greenock’s Ocean Terminal. The cruise terminal of Greenock is full of information. There is tourist information desk, wi-fi and souvenir shops. The cruise terminal is only around 1 km walk from the city centre of Greenock. There are a couple of nice walks around the town or even hikes up the hill but that is about it.

There are a hand full of volunteers that have such an amazing love for their region that they offer free tours in the cruise terminal. They don’t take you to anything mind blowing, but the fact that can step into detail about their region and tell you stories with such passion is what makes this worth it. Find them in the cruise terminal, but please know there is a very limited amount of spots available. You can also book online:  http://www.inverclydetouristgroup.co.uk/content/tours/#tours  The tours are free, but we highly recommend to tip big as renting buses and guides doesn’t come cheap.

There is a taxi information desk at the terminal. They have several tours they can offer, but one way rides are also no problem. Except that a one way ride to Glasgow is 40 GBP. A taxi tour is around 30 pound per hour.

There are 2 train stations nearby. We recommend you to go to Greenock Central so you can avoid all the steps going to West station. From here you can easily reach Glasgow and Edinburgh.  You can check the train schedule through the following link:  http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search  . If you are planning in taking a trip to Edinburg, we not stop for coffee in Glasgow as it is on the way.

cruise ship port glasgow

In the late 19th century it was the 2nd largest city of the British Empire (after London). It was the centre of the Scottish trade and industry. In the ’60’s she lost that position when the shipyards closed one by one. The past is still reflected in the architecture of the city: Classic Georgian facades, baroque palaces, victorian buildings display the wealth of the former industrial superpower.

The Scottish Highlands

Although Greenock is officially on the lowlands the Highlands are literally across the water. Reach them by road or ferry. Take a scenic ride through these valleys to get a sense of what makes the Highlands famous throughout the world.

Edinburgh

It is hard not to fall in love with the city of Edinburg. Layers of history make this a unique city to visit and fair warning: one you get a taste of it, you want more. There are hundreds of historical sights in the city itself. Walk the royal mile from Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle, visit the spot where Harry Potter was written or spend you day pub crawling. A day in Edinburgh will never be disappointing.

It’s about a 10 minute walk up to the Station in Greenock.

The journey time is around 40-50 minutes (fast and slow trains), an off Peak Return (travel after 09:15 Mon-Fri) is only £7:30, if your ship docks early and you want to get up to Glasgow earlier than that then a Standard Return is £10:90.

It's easy.

Should also add there is no need to book in advance, these are Commuter trains and you just buy your ticket at the Station on the day.

Greenock (Glasgow) Cruise Ship Schedule For 2024

$142 million cruise terminal planned for Port of Galveston in 2025

Yet another cruise line is moving to Galveston, with a sprawling new terminal to match.

The Port of Galveston announced Tuesday it had reached an agreement with MSC Cruises to build a 165,000-square-foot terminal complex to accommodate the MSC Seascape, which is scheduled to begin sailing from its new homeport in November 2025.

According to the port’s news release, the new terminal at Pier 16 will include a converted cargo warehouse, parking garage, internal roadway and “other improvements.” For perspective, that’s about midway between the port’s newest major addition, the Royal Caribbean terminal at Pier 10, which opened in November 2022; and the proposed new home of the Battleship Texas at Pier 21.

“Adding MSC to our family of cruise lines offers our cruise guests an elegant, European-style family cruise experience,” port director and Galveston Wharves CEO Rodger Rees said in the release. “It also elevates our status as a top U.S. cruise home port and moves us up to the eighth largest cruise port in the global market, while paving the way for MSC to reach millions of cruise passengers in the Central U.S.”

The estimated cost of the project is $142 million, to be paid for by the port’s cash reserves and revenue bonds. The port’s 20-year agreement includes four five-year extension options, the release said, and allows the port to negotiate use of the new terminal with other cruise lines pending availability.

MSC Cruises is the leisure-focused division of the Geneva-based MSC Shipping, a family-owned operation that is now the world’s largest container-shipping company. According to Marine Insight , it took over the top spot from Maersk after adding nearly 100 ships to its fleet last year.

“We want to give more guests the opportunity to experience MSC Cruises’ unique European flavor, and bringing MSC Seascape to Galveston allows us to be more accessible to millions of people in the central part of the country,” MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez said in a statement. “A great cruise starts with a top-notch terminal, and we’re excited to partner with the Galveston Wharves to ensure our guests enjoy the experience from end to end.”

The port expects more than 1.6 million cruise passengers to sail out of Galveston this year, Rees added. Tuesday’s announcement brings the number of cruise lines operating out of Galveston to six, with MSC joining Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean. Eight different ships are headed to the Caribbean this week alone.

Christened in 2022, the Seascape itself can accommodate nearly 5,200 passengers and offers 11 dining venues, 20 bars and lounges, 13 pools and water features and more than 130 “Yacht Club” luxury suites. A number of design elements wink at New York City, among them the nearly ten-foot Statue of Liberty replica in the casino and the "Times Square" retail/entertainment area. Other attractions include an infinity pool overlooking the ocean; the Aurea spa; the Robotron, a roller coaster shaped like a robotic arm; and the Pirates Cove Aquapark.

“As big as the ship is, it features a smart layout with plenty of nooks and crannies that enable you to find the right spot to revel or relax, at your leisure,” wrote the trade website Cruise Critic .
