TRIP-Translating Research Into Practice
Embargo lift date, committee members, degree year, journal title, journal issn, volume title.
At its core, the IUPUI TRIP initiative illustrates and fosters interdisciplinary and crossdisciplinary research targeting goals which work toward the betterment of people’s lives across communities, our state, and beyond. The faculty on the IUPUI campus are making a difference to farmers, manufacturers, the service industry, our waterways, policy makers, educators, and to the health and well-being of our citizens through their focus on translational research. Their translational research takes knowledge generated from scientific inquiry and humanistic scholarship and transforms that knowledge into practices and solutions. Translational research solves problems people face in their everyday lives by using meaningful, evidenced-based information to address complex social, health, governmental, cultural, and relational issues. This process is more than just application. Translational research intentionally targets a problem and constructs an answer based on evidence. IUPUI, through the leadership of Chancellor Bantz, recognizes that the partnership between an urban campus and its communities is best when the campus contributions to those communities are clearly evident. The IUPUI TRIP initiative proudly illustrates the contributions that our faculty make to others. Currently, we have identified more than 100 translational scholars at IUPUI. We invite you to explore the meaningful research that our campus has to offer.

Traveling to Indianapolis
When preparing to travel to IUPUI for your first semester on campus, be sure to check your letter of admission for your expected arrival date, and book your flight accordingly. You should book a connecting flight all the way to the Indianapolis International Airport (not Chicago) from your home country.
Be sure to make housing arrangements prior to arriving in Indianapolis. If your permanent home will not be ready for you when you arrive, don't forget to make temporary arrangements where you can stay until you are able to move into your new residence. Learn more about housing options»
Late arrival information
It is important to make every effort to arrive on or before the program start date noted on your I-20 or DS-2019.
Learn more about late arrival >>
Airport transportation
We strongly encourage you to make arrangements in advance for transportation from the airport to your new residence in Indianapolis.

Know your travel documents and bring them with you
When traveling as an international student, it is important to understand your travel documents and ensure that you have all important documents with you.
The Office of International Affairs will always be your primary contact for information regarding your visa.
What should I know about my entry into the United States?
No matter your visa status, you will need to go through immigration and customs upon arrival in the United States. Your arrival location, whether this be at a US airport or through a border crossing, is your “port of entry”.
We are here to help.

The Fellowship Committee has set aside funds for Travel Fellowships to assist full-time graduate students in attending a meeting or conference relevant to their degree program to present their research. The maximum sum awarded to any student is $1000. Mentors are strongly encouraged to review their student's applications and to provide funding to the student to facilitate travel to the meeting. This is a competitive process and submitting an application does not guarantee funds will be awarded.
Because University Fellows receive funds that are to be used for travel expenses, they are ineligible for this program during the first two years of their program. Please contact your department's graduate advisor for more information on travel funds if you are a University Fellow.
Travel Fellowship eligibility
To receive support, a student must either:
- present a refereed or invited paper and be listed as the first author, or
- present a poster and be listed as the first author.
In addition, students must be currently enrolled in a research degree program on the IUPUI campus (master's or Ph.D.). Students must be registered full time when their application for a travel fellowship is submitted, and be similarly enrolled full time on the IUPUI campus during the semester of their travel.
Confirmation from the meeting or conference that a student has been selected to present their research is required along with a letter of support from the student's research mentor.
Students are eligible to receive this fellowship only one time per academic year.
Questions can be sent to the IU Graduate School at [email protected] .
Fall Fellowships: If you are traveling between May 8, 2024 and April 30, 2025, the application deadline is October 11, 2024. Award notification by November 10, 2024.
Spring Fellowships: If you are traveling between March 1, 2024 and September 30, 2024, the application deadline is March 15, 2024. Award notification by April 12, 2024.
Applications received after the deadline will not be reviewed.
* Note : Applications will not be reviewed until the deadline has occurred for the respective cycle.

The maximum amount a graduate student may receive is $1000. This is a competitive process and submitting an application does not guarantee funds will be awarded.
Faculty/department responsibilities:
1. Faculty mentor/department must submit a letter of support, which outlines the purpose of travel, importance of the research, as well as detailing the talents and strengths of the student, and reasons attendance at the meeting is important for this student. Travel Fellowship FAQ
How do I apply?
We have created a How-to-Apply guide for your convenience. Fellowships are provided to students who wish to travel to a meeting or conference to present their research studies. Students may also apply for funds to cover travel to a meeting to present research related to a teaching project at IUPUI. This program is competitive and students are encouraged to look for multiple sources of funding to support their travel including funds from their mentors, department, school and external sources.
How to Apply for the Travel Fellowship
How can the award funds be used?
Funds should be used to reimburse your program and/or yourself for acceptable expenses according to Indiana University Travel Policies . This includes, but is not limited to: round-trip flight that originates and returns to the Indianapolis, IN airport; lodging; conference fees; parking at the airport; ground transport while your meeting; and per diem rates to cover food based on the university policies.
IU's Per Diem Rates policy
Lodging and per diem cannot be claimed for a conference held within a 50-mile radius of IUPUI.
How much is the award?
This depends on several factors. First the committee reviews your estimated expenses, but also takes into account the quality of the overall application and support provided by your program. The maximum sum of $1000 can be awarded.
What is included in the application process?
We have created a How-to-Apply guide for your convenience. Please review this guide before staring your application. Also meet with your mentor or research advisor to discuss how this meeting will benefit your training and whether your mentor, department, or school will also provide financial support for your travel to the meeting. Evidence of financial support from the student’s academic program is important in the application review.
How are the applications reviewed?
Points are awarded for research activities and contributions, as well as achievements. The letter of support, financial commitment from the program, as well as your personal one-page synopsis of how the conference will assist you in your studies and career goals will be the primary focus of the committee.
Incomplete, incorrect or late applications will not be considered. Applicants who did not meet the eligibility requirements will not be considered. Please review materials carefully for accuracy.
You are responsible for all portions of the application; this includes ensuring that the Faculty Form is submitted by the deadline.
How will I know if I have been awarded a fellowship?
You will be notified via your university email account on or around the notification date listed under deadlines.
Will I receive the award prior to my travel?
Funds are awarded as reimbursements to your department only. You may receive notice of your award prior to your travel, but the funds are not transferred to your program until you return from your tip and the required receipts are submitted to your department representative. Your department representative will be responsible for ensuring that you are reimbursed.
How do I plan my trip?
You will need to work with your program / department to plan your travel according to Indiana University Travel Policies .
What do I do after I return from the conference?
After you return you will submit your receipts for acceptable expenses to your department representative to process your reimbursement. Your department representative will then complete the Travel Fellowship transfer electronic form (link provided in award notification) to access University Fellowship travel funds.
What if I am not awarded a Travel Fellowship?

Iowa demolished IU in Iowa City. How will Hoosiers respond in Hawkeyes' trip to Bloomington?
- No. 16 IU vs. No. 4 Iowa, 8 p.m., Thursday; TV: Peacock
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana women’s basketball has one more chance this regular season to pick up a top-10 victory. And gets that opportunity on its homecourt.
No. 16 IU is the only Big Ten team not to lose a home game this season. The Hoosiers are 13-0 at Assembly Hall, but IU’s penultimate home game of the season may be its hardest. No. 4 Iowa is making the return trip to Bloomington on Thursday night to finish off the two-game season series.
The Hoosiers traveled to Iowa City on Jan. 13, and the Hawkeyes handed them an 84-57 loss.
Here are three keys for IU to keep up with Iowa this time around:
Staying in front of Iowa
The Illini had 32 points in the paint by halftime, taking advantage of multiple open lanes left by the Hoosiers for easy layups.
IU tried to close those lanes in the second half, but the Illini still found a way to get past.
“We couldn't keep them in front of us,” coach Teri Moren said following the game. “We didn't have any great rim protection, you know, with our bigs. When you play a team like this, you’ve got to be connected, you’ve got to help each other. You got to really be in the spots to slow some gaps.”

Staying in front may be even more important against Iowa; the Hawkeyes have no shortage of players who can use the paint to their advantage. Sophomore forward Hannah Stuelke is the main perpetrator, and she displayed that with a 47-point game on 17-of-20 shooting against Penn State — all in the paint or just around it.
Stuelke dominating the paint opens up the floor for the rest of the Hawkeyes, as well. Iowa has two main 3-point shooters — Gabbie Marshall and Caitlin Clark — who can get open looks because opponents are so caught up with Stuelke in the paint.
Caitlin Clark will score. IU needs to limit everyone else.
As Moren has said in the past, it’s nearly impossible to limit Clark, Iowa’s star guard. The senior, who broke the all-time NCAA women’s basketball scoring record last week, averages 32.8 points and 8.5 assists per game.
Clark can have her way with the ball, no matter what defense she’s going up against. So, IU’s best bet might just be to limit Stuelke — and everyone else — as much as possible. Stuelke averages 14.4 points per game, and senior guard Kate Martin rounds out the Hawkeyes’ double-digit scoring averages with 13.5.
“I don’t know that anybody has figured out how to guard Cait, I don’t think anybody has done that,” Moren said ahead of their first matchup in January. “But we’ll make sure that it’ll be sort of similar to what we’ve done in the past. We’ve done a pretty decent job, knowing that she’s going to score. It’s just those other guys, the Martins, Gabbie Marshall, and Stuelke now.”
IU relatively limited Clark in the teams’ first meeting, keeping her two points under her average with 30 points. She fired off 11 assists, however, finding multiple other ways to help her teammates. The Hoosiers will have the tall task of not only limiting her scoring, but her passing as well.
A strong third quarter
What doomed IU against Iowa — and what has been a struggle for the entire season — was the third-quarter performance.
The Hoosiers and Hawkeyes played relatively close throughout the first half on Jan. 13 in Iowa City; Iowa led by six at halftime, but IU came out of break sluggish, scoring 11 points in the third quarter while Iowa scored 22. And that created a deficit the Hoosiers couldn’t dig themselves out of.
It wasn’t the only time IU struggled in third quarter outings. In the loss to Ohio State, IU allowed 23 points and scored 10 in the third. Even in the Hoosiers’ victories, it showed: they scored 16 points against Maryland while allowing 29, and scored seven against Wisconsin while allowing 14.
More: How a halftime routine switch gave IU women's basketball a gritty win over Michigan State
“Anytime your shot’s not falling, and that happened to us in the third quarter, that doesn't mean our defense can go down the toilet,” Moren said following the Wisconsin game. “I thought that we were thinking about the shots that we missed, and I don't know if we felt bad for ourselves, but I thought we lacked a lot of, you know, toughness, readiness, just defensively and that's a bad habit.”
The Hoosiers have taken steps to try and fix this issue; they’ve switched up their halftime routine in an attempt to stay warm during the break and to not dwell on the game. The switch worked in the first game IU played against Michigan State, but it regressed against Wisconsin.
To beat Iowa, IU will need to be nearly perfect. Including a strong showing out of halftime.
