Tour Bus Driver Job Duties

- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness inside the bus throughout the tour to ensure a pleasant environment for passengers.
- Respond to emergencies or unexpected situations, such as medical incidents or vehicle malfunctions, in a calm and efficient manner.
Tour Bus Driver Salary & Outlook
Tour bus driver salaries are influenced by factors such as experience, the type of tours conducted (historical, adventure, etc.), seasonal demand, employer size (independent vs. large tour companies), and customer service skills. Additionally, drivers specializing in niche tours or possessing unique knowledge may command higher wages.
- Median Annual Salary: $36,763 ($17.67/hour)
- Top 10% Annual Salary: $61,000 ($29.33/hour)
The employment of tour bus drivers is expected to grow much faster than average over the next decade.
Increased global tourism, rising interest in local and international travel experiences, and the expansion of tour companies are driving the demand for Tour Bus Drivers. Additionally, the growing popularity of eco-friendly and cultural tours requires skilled drivers familiar with diverse locales, further boosting employment opportunities in this sector.
Tour Bus Driver Job Requirements
Education: A Tour Bus Driver typically holds a High School Diploma, with a focus on subjects that enhance communication and geographical knowledge. Courses in English, geography, and customer service are beneficial, providing foundational skills for interacting with passengers and navigating routes. While specific majors are not required, electives in tourism or hospitality can offer a competitive edge, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded educational background in ensuring both safety and an enjoyable experience for passengers.
Experience: Tour Bus Drivers often enter the field without prior experience, learning through on-the-job training programs. These programs equip them with necessary skills, including safe driving practices, customer service, and route planning. Employers may also provide specific training related to the tour content, enabling drivers to share interesting facts and stories with passengers. Continuous learning and improvement in areas such as communication and emergency response are essential for success in this role.
Certifications & Licenses: Tour Bus Drivers typically require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), often with a Passenger (P) endorsement. Some regions may also mandate a specific Tour Bus Operator license or certification, and a clean driving record is generally essential. Additional certifications, such as First Aid or CPR, can be beneficial but are not universally required.
Tour Bus Driver Skills
Passenger Safety Procedures: Tour bus drivers are tasked with briefing each passenger on emergency exits, safety equipment, and protocols before departure. They must also conduct regular inspections of safety equipment, including first aid kits and fire extinguishers, and stay informed on the latest safety regulations and training to ensure a secure environment for everyone on board.
Route Planning: Developing efficient and scenic routes that meet time constraints while enhancing the passenger experience requires extensive knowledge of local geography, traffic patterns, and points of interest. Such planning ensures tours are memorable, smooth, and punctual, reflecting positively on the driver’s professionalism and the tour company’s reputation.
Defensive Driving: The ability to safely navigate a large vehicle through various environments demands a heightened awareness of surroundings and the skill to anticipate potential hazards. Tour bus drivers must adjust their driving in response to the actions of other drivers and pedestrians to maintain safety and comfort for passengers.
Customer Service: From the moment passengers board the bus, making them feel welcomed and valued is crucial for an enjoyable tour experience. Addressing concerns or questions attentively enhances overall satisfaction and increases the likelihood of passengers recommending the service.
ADA Compliance: Familiarity with the accommodations and modifications necessary to ensure all passengers, regardless of physical ability, can access and enjoy the tour is essential. Knowledge of lift systems, seating arrangements, and communication aids is required to provide an inclusive experience.
Emergency Response: In unexpected emergencies, tour bus drivers must quickly assess situations and implement safety protocols to ensure passenger well-being. A calm demeanor and clear communication, coordinating with emergency services when necessary, are imperative.
Tour Bus Driver Work Environment
Tour bus drivers operate in a dynamic environment, primarily within the confines of their vehicle, navigating through diverse terrains and cityscapes. Their workspace is the driver’s seat, equipped with standard vehicular controls and often enhanced with GPS and communication devices to stay connected with tour operators and passengers.
The nature of their work dictates irregular hours, with weekends and holidays being peak times for tours. Dress codes can vary, often leaning towards company-branded attire for easy identification by clients. The social aspect of the job is significant, requiring drivers to interact frequently with passengers, providing not just a service but an experience.
Health and safety are paramount, with drivers adhering to strict regulations to ensure everyone’s well-being. Noise levels can fluctuate, especially in bustling city tours or when engaging with passengers. The pace of work is generally steady, punctuated by periods of waiting or downtime between tours.
Travel is inherent to the role, with some positions requiring overnight stays or long-distance travel, impacting work-life balance. Despite the challenges, the role offers a unique opportunity to meet diverse groups of people and explore new locations, making it appealing to those with a love for travel and customer service.
Advancement Prospects
Tour bus drivers can advance their careers by transitioning into roles with higher responsibility and pay, such as becoming a tour operations manager or starting their own tour company. Gaining experience in diverse routes and specializing in niche tours (e.g., historical, adventure) enhances their value and opens up opportunities for leading more exclusive and higher-paying tours.
Building a strong reputation for safety, knowledge, and customer service is crucial. Drivers can leverage this reputation to negotiate better terms or move into luxury tour segments. Additionally, mastering multiple languages can significantly boost a driver’s appeal to international tourists, potentially leading to opportunities with global tour operators.
Progressing in this career often involves a mix of practical experience, customer service excellence, and strategic career moves, such as identifying and specializing in high-demand tour niches.

Custom Driving Services in Italy
- We are a professional team of English speaking drivers and guides all over Italy. Our vehicles are fully insured and we have the licenses necessary to enter the city centers of Italy which are closed to the genera public. We offer multiple transfers all over Italy and assist in putting together the best transportation routes as part of a customized itinerary for individuals and groups. Refer to our transportation page for more information about the various types of transportation options we offer in Italy.
- Private city and regional driving tours, with knowledgeable English-speaking driver-guides
- Private tours with professional drivers + registered tour guides + VIP skip the line tickets for sites and museums all over Italy. Since many sites in Italy including Vatican City, Pompeii, the Last Supper and many others have huge lines if you don't book the VIP skip the line tickets, we can often get the tickets you need that will allow you to experience these attractions with comfort and ease. We coordinate with our guides and drivers to make sure you don't loose time or get lost, which will save you time and money!
- Local driving can be challenging for non-locals, and some places are definitely much more dangerous than others . Italians can be aggressive and impatient behind the wheel, which our professional drivers are unfazed by.
- Driving in most historic town centers is limited these days. With a rental car, you would have to park outside the center and walk in. Professional drivers can take you into the heart of the city, drop you off and pick you up again when you are ready to leave.
- Roads weren't designed for modern tourism so you can spend a lot of time in traffic, which can be stressed. From the comfort of the backseat, you can enjoy the view and allow your driver to navigate the best route to your destination.
- Italy is renowned for its wine and wine tasting is one of our most popular tours. With a driver, you won't have to worry about exceeding the 1 glass limit, or Italy's zero-tolerance policy for those who do drink and drive.

“Best Tours is a community-minded company with their clients’ best interest at heart. RMHCCV is so fortunate to partner with Best Tours in offering first-class transportation at our events and for our donors. We are so grateful to work with Jasmine and the entire Best Tours team in fulfilling our mission of providing a ‘home away from home’ and resources for families of children that are hospitalized.”
“I have been working with Jasmine and Best Tours in Central California for nearly 10 years. As a professional sports organization, it is extremely important that our fans, staff, and players receive a first-class traveling experience. Jasmine and her team have always lived up to that experience! From the drivers to the office staff I have always been treated with care and honesty. One of the most important aspects of a positive traveling experience is open communication and I feel that Jasmine is always accessible and extremely responsive. Best Tours has given professional sports in Central California a first-class feel and an enjoyable traveling experience. Secondly, flexibility is also extremely important as there are continuous last-minute changes in terms of travel and Best Tours has always been so flexible and easy to work with. I give them a 10/10 in terms of customer experience!”
“We have been using Best Tours for our Youth Group trips for over 8 years and well over 25 different trips with them. These trips have been up to the mountains, down to Southern California, or to the Coast, and we have had excellent service every single one. We have never had a single issue with any of our trips. The busses are always spotless, drivers are punctual and friendly, and most importantly, our drivers are always incredibly safe. It is an absolute joy to work with Best Tours every time we need a trip planned out. I have recommended them to other churches and they have had a similar experience. If you are in need of a reliable, friendly, and safe bus company, Best Tours should be your first and only choice.”
“Best Tours is an exceptional example of how a transportation company should provide service. I’ve experienced a high level of professionalism, courteous, and efficient service, as well as, going through great lengths to ensure our guests feel safe and relaxed.”
“I have used Best Tours in the past for a few different events. I have always been extremely happy with the service, transportation, and staff. I have always dealt with Jasmine. She is a pleasure to deal with no matter the timing of the event or short notice. One trip I have used Best Tours for was a golf tournament in Stockton, CA. I would rent a bus and a group of my friends would take the bus from my house to the tournament. The driver was always on time and the bus was always clean. The bus ride ended up being a part of the trip. I still have numerous people come up to me and ask when we are going on the bus again. They usually don’t even bring up the golf tournament. I tried them the first year, but I ended up using them multiple years in a row. I have also rented buses to take groups of teenagers to events. As you can imagine, teenagers are a rowdy group and the drivers were always accommodating and tolerant, which I greatly appreciate. I would recommend Best Tours for any travel plans you might have. They are the Best!”
“Best Tours is ‘Always’ our first choice. Our church schedules many trips a year and we always choose Best Tours & Travel. The office personnel is always helpful. There have been times when I needed help planning times and stops for a trip or to make changes and Jasmine has always taken the time to assist so that we end up with the best options and best trips! The coaches are new, clean, and comfortable. The drivers are very professional and keep us informed of any changes or detours that may have to be made due to traffic etc. Best Tours is our ‘Go-To’ ride!”
“We use Best Tours every year in February to transport our students, faculty and staff to a student competition in Sparks, NV. They always take great care of us. This year was a challenging trip with all the severe weather and the roads closing. Best Tours took great care in making decisions to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff as well as their employee. They monitored the road conditions for over a 24 hour time period to ensure the bus would travel in safe conditions as well as take the safest route. We truly appreciate the extra time and effort. Thank you Best Tours!”
“They literally are the “Best”!!! I have used Best Tours for many private charters servicing our seniors in Madera for the past 21 years. A wonderful family-owned company that strives to ensure the passenger’s safety and the best-serviced coaches. The staff is courteous, professional, and rock star drivers!! Thank you for your continued service of excellence.”

How Much Should You Tip on a Guided Tour? All Your Gratuity Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about tipping on a guided tour..
The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours
When you book a guided tour , it may seem like you’re covering most of your vacation costs before you even depart. Most tours include accommodations, trip leaders, local guides, transportation during the trip, admission fees, and many meals all in the upfront cost. But the addd cost of tour leader tips and other customary gratuities can sneak up on you unless you’ve factored them in at the beginning.
Inspired by my own frustration about the vague information available about how much to tip on guided tours, I’ve compared tipping guidelines and recommendations from a dozen different tour companies to create this tipping guide for tours. You can use it to get a sense of tour operator tipping norms and then plan accordingly.
BEST OF THE BEST: 15 Best Group Travel Companies for Guided Tours
Which Gratuities Are Covered in Most Tours?
Many tour companies build tips for support staff into the tour price. That could include hotel staff, waiters, and sometimes (but not always) bus drivers. If your guided tour has a dedicated motor coach driver for the entire trip, for example, you may be expected to tip the driver in addition to your guides.
And almost none of the tour operators I spoke with include the priciest of all tips—tour leader gratuities—into the cost of a tour. The exception is Road Scholar , which includes group leader gratuities in the up-front tour cost.
Which Gratuities Are Not Covered in Most Tours?
Beyond the above-mentioned exceptions, most tour companies do not include tips for guides and hotel housekeeping. Often, these people rely on tips as a vital part of their income, so it’s important to set your own budget accordingly to make sure you’re tipping at an appropriate level for their service.
- Tour Leader/Director: I’ll go into more detail below about tipping tour leaders, but in terms of the biggest gratuity expense to budget for on a tour, this is it, since the customary amount may well be in the hundreds of dollars.
- Local Tour Guides: Some tour companies will include local tour guides into the gratuities covered in the cost of the tour, while others say you should tip local tour guides individually. If you’re expected to tip local guides on your own, the daily amount usually falls somewhere in the $2 to $10 range. Local tour guides tend to be used for day tours, so you’ll want to tip them at the end of the day, as you may not see them again.
- Hotel Housekeeping: In-room tips for the cleaning staff aren’t generally paid by tour companies. TourScoop’s sister site FamilyVacationist has an explainer about hotel housekeeping tipping etiquette , but generally speaking the customary range is $3 to $10 per day depending on the hotel class.
- Independent Meals: Learn tipping customs for your destinations before you go, since you’ll likely have some meals on your own and will want to be able to tip or not tip as the culture dictates.
Why You Should Always Tip Your Tour Leaders
Ask a tour company why you should tip your tour leader and you’ll likely get some version of, “Well, it’s the customary way to thank them for all their hard work” or “It’s how you show appreciation and gratitude.”
Intrepid Travel goes a bit deeper on its explanation, noting that “tipping is still a big part of leaders’ overall income” and that tipping locals for their guiding services is actually a powerful way to inject cash into the local economy. Since tip money doesn’t pass through a third party, the money “either go[es] straight to the leader, or get[s] divided up among your porters and local guides.”
A great tour leader turns a good experience into a great one, and it’s natural to want to make sure they feel appreciated, even if you have some resistance to the structures that require guests to heavily subsidize these hard-working wonders.
How Much to Tip Your Tour Leaders
The less helpful but most accurate answer to the question of how much to tip your tour leader is that information about tipping is generally found in the final documents you receive before your trip, so be sure to read those pages carefully when you get them (usually somewhere between a month and two weeks before the start of a tour). To give you a ballpark estimate, though, the daily per person tip for a tour leader tip should be somewhere in the range of $7 to $12, with $10 per person per day being the most widely recommended amount.
GO IT ALONE: 10 Best Travel Companies for Solo Travel Tours
That amount can add up quickly, especially if you have more than one tour leader and/or are traveling with a family group . For instance, Adventures by Disney (which is refreshingly up-front about its tipping recommendations) pencils out gratuities for a 10-day tour with a family of four at $720 to $880, since its family travel adventures always include two tour leaders. That can be sticker-shock territory, which is why I suspect so many tour companies are so cagey about how much to tip tour leaders.
How and When to Tip on a Guided Tour
Some companies—including Trafalgar , Globus , and Collette —may give you the option to pre-pay tour leader tips with your credit card at the time of booking. On the one hand, that’s great, since it means you don’t need to carry around cash to give at the very end of the trip. On the other hand, it pokes holes in the industry-wide story that the tip is tied to the service you’ve received.
Most tour companies still recommend tipping your tour leader at the end of the tour. Plan to tip in either the local currency or U.S. dollars if it’s a widely accepted currency in the destination country. Some tour leaders also accept Venmo or PayPal.

‘It’s a joke’: How this tour pro stumbled upon a rare driver build
Ping's Alta CB 55S driver shaft first made an appearance when Phillips was on the Texas A&M golf team.
Getty Images
Chandler Phillips made a driver shaft change last week at the Valspar Championship . It would’ve flown completely under the radar had it not been for the man himself, who dropped a bit of gear intel at the end of a question about the extent of his rookie season through the first three months.
The answer started with a recent putter swap and flowed right into some recent driver issues that led to the shaft change. Only this wasn’t any shaft change. After missing out on making the Players Championship field, Phillips went home and “started trying different stuff” to get the driver back on the rails. It didn’t take him long to throw the “old trusty shaft” in his 10-degree Ping G430 LST .
“It’s honestly a joke what it is,” he explained after the second round of the Valspar.
PING G430 Max 10K Custom Driver
A joke, huh? This wasn’t Phillips’ way of dunking on his own gear, but rather pointing out that he uses a rare driver setup. In fact, Ping Tour rep Kenton Oates confirmed to GOLF.com that Phillips is the only one playing this particular driver shaft on the PGA Tour.
“It’s just a stock Ping [Alta CB] shaft,” Phillips continued. “It’s 55 grams stiff. It’s not tipped. It’s a joke. I don’t know how it works.”
Take a peek at the driver shafts flexes on Tour and you’ll find plenty of extra-stiff (X) and tour extra-stiff (TX) offerings. Most are usually tipped at least half an inch to bolster the profile. Rarely do you see a tour pro using something untipped in the stiff category.
Even more interesting is the Alta CB 55S shaft is geared for swing speeds between 90-100 mph and just happens to be a retail offering found in Ping’s off-the-rack build.
Phillips, who currently averages 111.85 mph club head speed (about 4 mph below the Tour average), came across the shaft during his time on the golf team at Texas A&M. Ping player development manager Jeff Brown confirmed Phillips was under-spinning the ball at the time but hadn’t considered the Alta CB — a counterbalanced profile — until he “stumbled upon it” on the A&M range.
“I was actually just jacking around on the range one day, and it’s so embarrassing, but one of the girls on the golf team — and I still practice at A&M — her bag was out there, we were just hanging out, and I grabbed her driver [with an Alta CB shaft] and I hit it and I was like, No, that’s a fluke,” he said.
Except it wasn’t a fluke. Phillips teed up five more to verify the results were legitimate — and they were. Phillips’ spin rate quickly moved into a more reasonable range of 2,000-2,200 RPMs, with ball speed and carry distance seeing a noticeable uptick as well.
“I hit ’em the exact same,” he said. “And I ordered it, and I think I played the shaft for two and a half years. Then I think I did a little premature getting it out of the bag, because I was kind of hitting everything bad, and I think it was more me, not the shaft.”
Thanks to a member of the women’s team at A&M, Phillips is back on track off the tee following a T3 finish at the Valspar, his best to date since he earned his Tour card. Not bad for a stiff-flex “joke” shaft that comes stock in a Ping driver.

Inside Tim Robinson’s ‘I Think You Should Leave’ Tour: Unaired Sketches, Paul Rudd and Why Patrick Stewart Turned Down a Role

- Inside Tim Robinson’s ‘I Think You Should Leave’ Tour: Unaired Sketches, Paul Rudd and Why Patrick Stewart Turned Down a Role 20 hours ago
SPOILER ALERT: This story contains minor spoilers of Tim Robinson ‘s “ I Think You Should Leave ” live show, including general descriptions of unaired sketches .
“I Think You Should Leave” went live Tuesday, April 2, when creators Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin brought their beloved Netflix sketch comedy series to the stage at New York’s Beacon Theatre.
Nearly 3,000 fans showed up for the mysterious, sold-out show, many of them revealing their allegiance to the comedy cult with Dan Flashes button-downs and Corncob TV tees — if you know, you know — and yelling out lines from “I Think You Should Leave” that have been immortalized in gifs and memes.
Brooks Wheelan, who overlapped with Robinson and Kanin during their time on “Saturday Night Live,” opened the show with five minutes of stand-up before a giant screen began playing an extended version of “Has This Ever Happened to You?,” a sketch from the first episode of “I Think You Should Leave,” in which Robinson plays a low-tier attorney advertising to people who have been bizarrely wronged by a pair of exterminators.
Then, to much fanfare, Robinson and Kanin took the stage, which was designed like a living room, and explained the format of the night. They would bring out special guests to watch sketches that were scrapped from the series and determine whether they should have made the cut. Spoiler alert: every sketch was met with a baffled, unanimous: “Why didn’t you put that in?” Oh, and there was also a bird mascot named Tori, who would prance onstage and harass them every half hour.
It’s a classic “I Think You Should Leave” sketch reminiscent of “Job Interview,” in which Robinson goes to great lengths to prove a push door actually goes both ways. The audience went wild for “Done Deal,” and Richardson’s verdict was: “It should have been in the program.”
The next guest was Seth Meyers, who jokingly assured Robinson and Kanin that he fought hard for their ideas as head writer of “SNL” before ribbing them about a “Jurassic Park” sketch they pitched, which “would have been great for 1993.” Then they screened the next unaired sketch, which was ironically not the only one of the night that involved dinosaurs. “Dino Talk” is honestly hard to explain, but it involves a strange man attending a lecture while playing mind games with the random people seated next to him, played by Kanin and “The Bear” star Lionel Boyce.
Meyers said of the sketch, “There’s a lot I like,” and pointed out that the reason they probably didn’t include it in the show is because, like “Focus Group,” it includes a guy with an unplaceable accent messing with Kanin. Robinson said they initially offered the main part to Sir Patrick Stewart, but he didn’t understand the concept and passed. “He’s dead to me,” joked Robinson.
Patti Harrison, another recurring favorite on “I Think You Should Leave,” came out next to discuss “Movie Set,” in which Robinson and Richardson play bickering background extras on the set of a horror movie. Robinson’s job is to deliver a burger to Richardson, who makes a bold creative choice to do a “stinky” gesture when handed the food in each take. This, obviously, really upsets Robinson, and the pair begin arguing through their teeth.
Robinson’s rationale for not putting “Movie Set” in the series was that it’s “too hard to understand,” to which Meyers laughed: “You have literally the most challenging sketch show ever made. Your audience will follow you anywhere.”
The next guest was Bruce Buckles, whom Robinson introduced as a random improv student in New York trying to break into the business. He said he is the founder of a new improv company called Buckle Up Comedy, which doesn’t yet have a physical space. As the night went on, Buckles fawned over the onstage talent and backhandedly praised Meyers as one of the “Top 3 Weekend Update hosts.”
His addition seemed appropriately bizarre, dosing the audience with a fair amount of uncomfortable laughter. But it turns out — and I’m sorry to shatter the illusion — that Buckles is just a character played by comedic actor-writer Brendan Jennings. I know this because his performance was so believable that after the show I had to research whether Buckles was real.
Of the remaining unaired sketches, there was “Event Space Walkthrough,” in which Robinson must fake a phone call but has no idea how to; “Dino Guy,” which casts Robinson as a paleo-enthusiast who goes to war against a little kid playing with toy dinosaurs; and “Barney’s,” which stars Biff Wiff as a disgruntled diner owner who, in order to drum up business, renames menu items to stuff like “Big Bra Water” and “Eyes Roll Back in My Head Blowjob Burger.” (Robinson said that last one didn’t make the cut because “the jokes seemed too obvious.” The audience disagreed.)
Guest after guest praised each sketch, and Robinson and Kanin hilariously failed to come up with a single good reason why they were cut from the show. As laughter roared from the balconies, you could almost sense a slight tinge of regret on the co-creators’ faces.
Still, exhibiting unseen sketches in front of an audience with celebrities providing live commentary — rather than, say, throwing them up on YouTube — is pretty genius. By letting us peek into the “I Think You Should Leave” vault, Robinson and Kanin deepen the show’s lore, building the comedy equivalent of B-sides and rarities. It won’t be long before die-hard fans declare their favorite sketch as the extended cut of “Has This Ever Happened to You?” — or the second unreleased one about dinosaurs. And it’s only a matter of time before bootleg iPhone videos of the sketches trickle onto Reddit and Twitter, and the jokes rot fans’ vocabularies.
Before the night ended, Robinson and Kanin screened an extended version of “He Layeth on High,” starring the late Fred Willard as a funeral organist, plus a clip from an unreleased sketch about a dance competition show that eliminates contestants who check their pockets to make sure their wallets haven’t fallen out. Wrapping up with the help of comedian and musician Whitmer Thomas, Robinson led the Beacon in a karaoke singalong to the fan-favorite power ballad “Friday Night.”
It’s curious that “I Think You Should Leave” has yet to be renewed for a fourth season by Netflix. Given the show’s low budget and treasure trove of unreleased material, Ted Sarandos should be begging Robinson and Kanin for more episodes — and maybe he is! But the day of the live show, it was announced that the comedy duo landed an HBO pilot order for their series “The Chair Company,” about a man who finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy at work, and a couple of years ago they sold another pilot to the network called “Computer School.”
Robinson and Kanin are busy, and they may or may not choose to return to the world of “I Think You Should Leave.” But if the live tour proves anything, it’s that there are legions of fans clamoring for more sketches, and that even the leftovers knock it out of the park.

Masters 2024: The wild story of the 'surgery' Phil Mickelson's driver needed before his 2010 Augusta win
Phil Mickelson hits a driver during the third round of the 2010 Masters.
Streeter Lecka
If you’re a Phil Mickelson fan and into omens, then you might be rooting for Lefty to damage his driver before this year’s Masters. That’s because the last time that happened to Mickelson, it set off a wild chain of events that ultimately led to his third Masters title.
Although Mickelson is far better known for winning his second Masters in 2006 armed with two drivers in the bag, the tale of his driver in 2010 is far less known, but no less compelling.
MORE: The best we're making right now for the Masters
Rewind to the week before the Masters in 2010 when Mickelson cracked the carbon-composite shell of his Callaway FT Tour TA driver during the final round of the Shell Houston Open.
Normally replacing a driver is no big deal, but Mickelson wanted that driver and the composite shell made repairing it far more complicated. Making matters more stressful was the fact it wasn’t something that could be done in the tour van at Augusta.
In short, the driver required the golf equipment equivalent of a transplant. Performing the surgery was Dr. Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s senior VP of R&D at the time (the Dr., while ironic, is legit as Hocknell has a Ph.D.). Hocknell retrieved the club Sunday night prior to Masters week and got a text message from Mickelson, who was in Augusta, Monday morning asking, “How bad is it, Doc? Is she gonna make it?”
Hocknell and his team performed, in their words, “an unprecedented repair,” removing the carbon composite body from the clubface while never taking off the Mitsubishi Fubuki shaft in order to ensure the loft and lie remained untouched. “We had never done that before, so everyone was a little nervous,” said Hocknell.
The same weights were inserted in the same location in the new shell before it was bonded to the titanium cup face and the same skid plate added to the sole. The driver was on a plane heading to Augusta by 3:30 that afternoon and delivered to Mickelson on the eighth tee during his Tuesday practice round at Augusta National.
Mickelson used the driver and went on to rank second in the field in distance with a 297.1-yard driving distance average while winning by three shots over Lee Westwood.

Apparently, fans don’t want JLo now. So her tour producers are hoping they’ll want JLo then.
The struggling North American “This Is Me…Now” tour – Jennifer Lopez ‘s first in five years — is transforming into “This Is Me…Live/The Greatest Hits.” It’s apparently hoped that the promise of familiar material will goose ticket sales, which already saw seven tour dates canceled.
It has been 10 years since Lopez’s last studio LP, 2014’s A.K.A. , and 22 years since 2002’s This Is Me … Then gave her two of her biggest hits in “Jenny From the Block” and “All I Have.”
The two films are This Is Me…Now: A Love Story, and a documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told. ”
The projects were part of a self-financed, $20 million multimedia project that includes the tour and the two films.

Jennifer Lopez is now touting her tour as a greatest hits show after canceling seven dates and struggling to sell tickets.
The name of the trek has changed from “This Is Me…Now” to “This Is Me…Live | The Greatest Hits,” according to Variety .
“The latest rebrand suggests a pivot from a tour focusing on the new album’s songs to one spanning her discography, a move that may entice listeners who didn’t connect with her latest material,” the outlet reported Tuesday.
A source told Page Six that the tour will “convey the Jennifer Lopez live experience” and was not created solely for the music from her latest album. It is, however, a “celebration which includes the new album.”
The “Jenny From the Block” singer, 54, originally announced the tour in February to concur with her “This Is Me…Now” album and accompanying films.
However, Lopez quietly canceled scheduled shows in Nashville, Raleigh, NC, Atlanta, Tampa, Fla., and New Orleans last month.

Additionally, concerts previously up for sale in Cleveland and Houston were removed from Ticketmaster’s website completely.
Ticketmaster blamed the cancellations on “the event organizer” and gave ticketholders information on how to obtain refunds.

Page Six was told at the time that the concerts could not be rescheduled because of a logistical issue through the promoter.
Not only is Lopez having tour trouble, but she also had issues selling her latest album.
After its February release, the project, which is her first studio album in over a decade, flopped on the Billboard 200 chart by debuting at No. 38.
The “Selena” star’s record is about her love for her husband, Ben Affleck, whom she first dated in the early aughts before they wed in Las Vegas in July 2022.
In a review, Page Six opined that the “watery” album recycled “uninspired sounds and stories from a quarter-century ago.”
