LANZAROTE, A SUSTAINABLE DESTINATION

The particular model of development that the island has undergone, with sustained economic growth , and with clear protection and conservation of nature and the environment, has served to ensure the award of several recognitions for its sustainability. For example, on 7th October 1993 , it was declared a  Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO , and in 2015, it became the first destination to receive  Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification.

This latter was the definitive acknowledgment of the islanders’ long, hard work to maintain one of their most defining and identifying traits: their continued interest in respecting and preserving the environment.

Canary Green Sustainable Tourism on the Canary Islands

Finca de Arrieta – a charming, self-sufficient eco-village by Lanzarote Retreats

Experiential travel has been on the rise among mindful adventurers . In its essence, experiential travel starts with being aware of our individual and collective impact on the places we visit. It is a way of exploring new places through immersing yourself in the local culture, history, gastronomy, environment, and society.

If you have an urge to take a more experience-driven route, family-owned Lanzarote Retreats might just have the perfect accommodation for your next alternative holiday experience . Founded in 2007 by Michelle and Tila Braddock, Lanzarote Retreats offer multiple luxury villas, holiday homes, glamping, and eco-stays across the Lanzarote island.

At their flagship location Finca de Arrieta, you will be immersed in the luxurious off-grid vibe inviting you to unplug and reconnect with nature . This charming, self-sufficient eco-village, is the perfect example of how eco-tourism does not always mean forsaking modern facilities and rich comforts.

What makes Finca de Arrieta such a unique holiday experience?

Canary Green at Finca de Arrieta

If you look closely, you will notice the energy of inspiration all around the village. Finca de Arrieta draws you in, invites you to slow down , shift from a busy mind to a simple life. Surrounded by volcanic ridges on one side and the beach of Playa la Garita on the other, Finca de Arrieta blends into the landscape so delicately that it truly is a hidden gem on the east coast of Lanzarote.

Tila Braddock explains the idea of this eco-village: “Offering our guests the luxury of a hotel with the simplicity and community of off-grid camping was one of our main goals. Finca de Arrieta has 17 different sizes of sustainable holiday accommodations. These stunning holiday homes, ranging from Mongolian yurts and traditional cottages to private, luxury villas are all very original and offer privacy along with communal relaxation areas and adventures for the children”.

For the Braddock family, sustainability is embedded in their business as much as in their daily lives. They are constantly working on new ways to achieve even higher sustainability. Their eco-village is powered by the largest green energy system on the island, and it keeps evolving! At the moment, the family is developing a vegetable garden just uphill from the eco-village. From sustainable business operations, locally sourced food, and renewable energy to engaging with the local community and organizing beach clean-ups – Lanzarote Retreats team wear their values on the sleeve.

  • Participate in Children’s Cactus Garden. This is an ongoing project where guests and their children can start taking an active interest in nurturing and gardening while staying at Finca de Arrieta.
  • Borrow a bodyboard or surfboard for a day at the beach.
  • Experience a VIP private transfer from/to the airport.

How is Lanzarote Retreats embodying sustainability?

Sustainability at Finca de Arrieta follows you every step of the way. From authentic, organic architectural design to small details teaching guests sustainable habits. You’ll find words of encouragement around the area inviting guests to recycle, reuse water, be honest customers, and more.

LANDSCAPE AND ARCHITECTURE

  • Built on historical farmland , the architectural design of Finca de Arrieta has preserved the original features of the site wherever possible. For example, the swimming pool was previously a water tank. A historical well has been reconstructed and now is used to fill up the pool. The Eco Tower used to be the main windmill that pumped up the water.
  • Finca de Arrieta design follows the Braddock family values. When planning where the shower room should be at the Eco Chico Yurt, there was a palm tree in the way, but they decided to build around it. Tila says: “The tree is a wonderful feature and reminds us that we should live around nature without disturbing it .”
  • The eco-village grew organically , and there was no master plan. As the family restored the old property, one by one, they added yurts, built holiday homes, and developed the landscaping making each new accommodation stand out with its unique features .
  • The village is built with natural, eco-friendly materials , using natural ventilation, natural lighting, and incorporating the principles of Cesar Manrique wherever possible.
  • They also partner with a local Arrecife carpenter and a cooper to have local, handcrafted interior elements around the village.

MMM Photography-138

  • The eco-village is powered by the largest green energy system on the island . Most of the electricity is produced by solar and wind energy.
  • A local engineer has designed rotating solar panels to increase efficiency. Rotating solar panels can increase energy production by up to 30%.
  • Greywater is re-used for watering plants and palm trees.
  • A local desalination plant is used for producing freshwater.
  • Toyota Prius Hybrid rental cars are offered to guests encouraging sustainable commuting.

MMM Photography-167

COMMUNITY AND WELLBEING

  • The whole concept of Finca de Arrieta invites its guests to slow down, disconnect from devices, and reconnect with nature .
  • All guests are welcome to join paella night every Monday . It has become a big social occasion – a traditional Canarian get-together, with a big emphasis on celebrating family, friends, and the rich local produce .
  • Eco Zen Yurt is a place for all guests to use. It is an escape for stretching, pilates, yoga, or massage. When it is not booked, the guests can use it for free for whatever helps them relax.
  • Guests are welcome to use a local farm produce delivery service – order a grocery box or a VIP-ready breakfast delivered to your door.
  • Lanzarote Retreats aims to extend its sustainable impact to the local community . They have just started a partnership with a community organization Lanzarote Limpia organizing beach clean-ups .

MMM Photography-71

EDUCATION, AWARENESS AND PLAY

  • Self-serve Honesty Shop offers guests a chance to help themselves 24/7 with any products or household items. Here guests can buy l ocal produce , even local wines , and teach their kids integrity and nobility . Guests write down items they’ve taken, and at the end of the week, they settle up.
  • The eco-village is a family-friendly accommodation . Play area for children includes trampoline, climbing frame, swing, pirate boat, seesaw, sandpit, even a giant chess board inviting kids to reconnect with nature and play with each other.
  • Cactus garden – an ongoing project where guests and their children can start taking an active interest in nurturing and gardening.
  • While waiting for the hot water to kick in, guests are invited to collect the excess water and water the plants around the village .

3 tips from Lanzarote Retreats for other hotels on their way towards sustainability

• Offer experiences rather than just a holiday. Experiences are what people take back with them. The stories from your guests are the best marketing. • Partner with local businesses to bring more value to the local economy. For example, at Finca de Arrieta, paella for Monday paella nights is delivered from a local restaurant. • Target the quality tourist rather than the quantity. The type of clients Lanzarote Retreats want to target are the ones who care about their impact on the environment and the local community. The clients who enjoy the simplicity and luxury of Finca de Arrieta will go on telling the world about how unique and amazing Lanzarote island is.

Tila leaves us with a thought for the future of tourism: “All-inclusive type of tourism is not bringing much value to the island. Guests who spend their holiday inside the hotel area are neither taking what the island offers, nor giving back to the local community.” Though we see a positive change. More and more travelers are seeking alternative, responsible ways to explore new places redefining the concept of luxury . For the experiential traveler, luxury stands for authentic, unforgettable, local experiences. A story for a lifetime.

Sustainability Leaders United

Lanzarote retreats: championing ecotourism in the canary islands.

Lanzarote eco accommodation Finca de Arrieta

Lanzarote has been on my wishlist of places to visit for quite some time. Not just because of its very unique volcanic landscape, laid-back culture and brilliant wines. Also because Lanzarote has made itself a name as a destination which cares about sustainability and has – to a large degree – managed to sustain its character and community identity, unlike so many other sun and sea destinations.

This January I had the opportunity to find out first hand, following an invitation to visit the very intriguing Finca de Arrieta Eco Village in the north of the island. It was the first time I slept in a yurt. What a great start for SLP on TOUR 2020.

The very welcoming and hospitable Tila Braddock and his family & team took good care of me during the four days I had on Lanzarote, showing me around the eco village, and some of the other properties by Lanzarote Retreats . Together with Angie and Ainara from the Retreats team, we even went on a day-long trip around Lanzarote, in an electric car (of course).

Read about Tila’s entrepreneurial experiences in this short interview – including his thoughts on Lanzarote as sustainable destination and how adhering to environmental best practice has allowed him to save good money.

Tila, Lanzarote Retreats’ Eco Village Finca de Arrieta has become the place to stay when exploring the volcanic island. Do you remember what first got you interested in the tourism business, and sustainability?

Yes, it was when I first stayed in Tarifa (in 2003), windsurfing with my brother. I stayed at a beach-side chic resort and that was the moment I was inspired to create something similar in Lanzarote, but with a sustainable angle: an eco-retreat with lower impact structures, using minimal materials to construct!

Why did you establish Lanzarote Retreats, together with your wife Michelle?

After buying the 30 000 meters of land in front of Arrieta beach, we converted a huge water tank into what is now called the Eco Luxury Villa. It was an amazing family home for us, but feeling the recession in 2007, we decided it was too big a project to have just for the family. Hence, we thought it would be worth trying to rent out a sustainable, Mongolian Yurt!

The strong interest from many visitors, looking for a different way to experience Lanzarote and its magical North – away from the hotel resorts and mass tourism – motivated us to expand.

How do you “live” sustainability at the eco village – what makes it special, unique?

Finca de Arrieta runs off-grid, exclusively on the many hours of Lanzarote sunshine, using tracking solar panels (that rotate based on the sun’s position) and some small wind turbines. It’s a powerful twin 48v system running seventeen properties (all with fridges, lights), two swimming pools with pumps, the all-important salt chlorinators and water desalination plant, that makes 3 tonnes of fresh water daily. The system has never gone wrong in 12 years!

Some of the day to day activities at the Eco Village that are aimed at making the space more environmentally friendly are reducing the number of plastic water bottles needing recycling (by providing a refill station for guests in the honesty shop).

Rain water is scarce in Lanzarote, so guests use eco-products which allows us to re-use waste water for the trees/cacti in the Finca. We reuse the salty bi-product from the desalination plant (to top up our pools) and of course the use of electric/hybrid cars by staff and guests.

Also, the kitchen food waste gets fed to the Finca animal residents… ducks, donkeys and chickens (in return you can pick up your fresh eggs for breakfast). There are many other examples and we keep looking for new ways.

Inside a yurt at Lanzarote Retreats eco village

What kind of traveller are you targeting?

The concept has attracted numerous amounts of different travellers from around the world, with or without knowledge on sustainability.

We would be happy to keep welcoming more open-minded professionals or retired couples, those looking for a quiet place to work while away (e.g. writers), the many families who are keen to educate their children on all the advantages and joys of off-grid living and want to enjoy a more intimate family time. And of course we love to have the active sport-loving travellers come and stay.

What they all end up having in common, is a need to be in a tranquil place, in touch with nature, to be able to switch off from everyday life and stresses… away from the busy tourist resorts in the south!

Which are the economic benefits of environmental sustainability, for a hotel?

There are strong economic benefits, as well in that we are continually looking on where to consume less, recycle & re-use and save in a way beneficial to all.

The most evident one is the amount we save on the electricity and water bills! For example, the electricity bill for 17 properties would probably be about 100€ each a month (not including on grid amenities). So that’s a monthly saving of about 1700€ for the Finca.

We make our own water, saving three truckloads (ca. 13000L per truck) a week at 110€ each = 330€ = a month 1320€! … and the quality of water is better now than before!

The Guests in the Finca have the option to use Toyota Prius hybrid/electric cars (which probably is the most economical car for a family holiday).

Some of the staff, cleaners & maintenance use electric cars to get tasks done in different properties, throughout the island, saving approx. 140€ a week.

We also save by re-using the salty bi-product from our desalination plant to top up our pools and by using waste water for the plants. So just in energy, water and petrol there’s a saving of approximately 3500€ a month. So that’s over 40000€ a year!

Which are the main challenges you’ve encountered in developing and managing Finca de Arrieta eco village?

The authorities weren’t as enthusiastic at the start and tried to create bureaucratic obstacles. Any project of this kind presents its hurdles, one of which was trying to finance it. I’m lucky that I’ve managed to work closely with my suppliers, who have been very patient as well as enthusiastic over this project!

Lanzarote eco village Finca de Arrieta story

Having spent more than 30 years on Lanzarote, would you consider the island a good destination for sustainability-conscious travellers?

Lanzarote is the ideal island for sustainable projects, with its unspoilt, as-mother-nature-intended landscape, its hours of great sun, wind, waves and even geothermal activity!

The island was among the first in the world to become a UNESCO Protected Biosphere Reserve, in 1993, and signed up for the Biosphere Responsible Tourism program in 2015.

The impressive collaboration between nature and man is continuously demonstrated and lived, especially through the legacy of the artist/architect/ecological pioneer, Cesar Manrique , who helped shape and mould Lanzarote (setting it aside from other Canary Islands, which is very visible in the striking unchanged landscape and lack of over-development).

Which are the main topics and concerns linked to tourism sustainability at the moment, in the Canary Islands?

The other Canary Islands haven’t benefited from the likes of activists such as Cesar Manrique, to help maintain the environment by developing a tourism product that is based on sustainability. Hence, they have, to fit in with the rapidly growing tourism to the islands, ended up over-developing their coastlines and have rapidly changed their landscape.

Each business in the Canaries (not only in the tourism sector), needs to be more aware of the negative impact on the Environment and cultural heritage of the Archipelago. Awareness/responsibility needs to be more widespread amongst all (businesses, staff, locals, as well as visitor to the islands), assisting to minimise the impact caused by waste, emissions and consumption. This of course without affecting the quality of service or the experience offered to the sun seekers to this stunning, most southern part of Europe.

Over the years you’ve hosted many celebrities and influencers at the eco village. If you had to choose just one encounter, which one would it be?

We have attracted a lot of journalist/press attention with our project over the years, welcoming everything from Europe’s most popular magazines/newspapers, to even the modern social media influencers!

Who really stood out for me: the McEwan sisters, Caitlin (8) and Ella (10), the ‘Plastic free youth pioneers’, that came back for another visit to the Eco Village after a successful petition on Change.org, to get Burger King UK (and almost McDonalds), to stop giving away plastic toys with children’s meals.

The sisters decided to start the petition after learning what a serious harm plastic waste does and even won the first ever Youth Pioneer Plastic free award! These young environmentalists have given us hope and are an example to all of us, especially in moments when we feel that by ourselves we cannot make a difference!

Lanzarote Retreats team

How do you market and communicate your sustainability features to potential visitors – and how do you engage them once they’re at the eco village?

All our guests are invited to go to see the Eco Village and learn more about off grid living, even if they stay in our holiday homes outside of the Eco Village.

The environment at the finca, encourages our guests of all ages, to connect and communicate more between each other, to be social outdoors in the communal spaces.

30% of our new guests come through word of mouth recommendations. At Lanzarote Retreats we try to communicate our brand and ideas through social media too. We do a monthly newsletter to our client base which has proved to be both informative and effective. As these newsletters also get shared, more and more people are aware of our existence.

We believe that, if we keep giving the best service while at the same not time not jeopardising on the sustainability aspect, we will have the guest revisiting and sharing their positive experiences of sustainable tourism!

Now over 40% of our business comes from returning clients. That’s why we have never felt the need to pay to advertise, if it can still somewhat work in the old-fashioned way.

You take pride in creating a warm and inspiring culture at Lanzarote Retreats as a workplace. What role does social sustainability play nowadays in the context of sustainable tourism?

There are many ways that we try to share the concept of sustainability, with staff, guests and even local University of Tourism students, that come to learn about the benefits of sustainable tourism .

We rely on our guest feedback forms, that we get from every visit and we try to act on feedback where possible. We work on the same principle with all our team/staff. We listen to them and hopefully empower them in their role. We believe we are as successful as the team we build around us. That is why it’s important we show them gratitude and invest in them!

Anything else you’d like to mention?

We are lucky to operate on a small, tourism-dependent island that has miraculously managed to avoid the fate of so many other holiday spots. Lanzarote is what it is today, because they managed to create an amazing destination for tourists but maintained the traditional way…which is a blend of man and the stunning nature here!

The diverse people that live here, have a great quality of life. They have opportunities and live the tranquil Lanzarote outdoor lifestyle, in one way or another connecting with nature (for example by catching some waves after work).

The Island offers the best climate/landscape to train and compete throughout the year, hence it has become Europe’s number 1 sporting destination. Countless international sporting events and competitions are held here throughout the year, meaning we have a lot of visitors that come out here to be active, so like the locals, making the most of the relaxing environment, climate and the landscape that Lanzarote has to offer!

There are many ways we can all share what we know about sustainability with our community or work. The Sustainability Leaders United’ helps us to highlight the possibilities, shows where others are on the scale of sustainability and how we can all live this way if we choose to.

Thank you, Tila.

An island apart – the eco-tourism pioneer of Lanzarote

There’s nothing very new about eco-tourism, other than the name. The Canarian island of Lanzarote has been living by its code since the local artist and architect, César Manrique, found common cause with the tourism authorities and helped put the brakes on the kind of development that would threaten to overwhelm other islands, like Mallorca…

eco tourism lanzarote

César Manriquye, father of eco-tourism, above, and his Lanzarote “brand” at the entry to Timanfaya Natinal Park (right)

eco tourism lanzarote

“Yes, it’s sheer hell,” I told anyone who cared to listen, after we found ourselves “stuck” on Lanzarote after New Year in an Anglo-Spanish COVID restrictions pincer movement, which made returning to the UK an uncertain goal at best.

It was only a combination of rising numbers of COVID cases on the island, largely fuelled by zero restrictions on travel to and from metropolitan Spain, and the sinister threat of possible hotel-based quarantine on returning to the UK, that eventually stirred us to buy tickets for a rare flight Home seven and half weeks after we’d first set foot on Lanzarote.

Those extra weeks enabled us to get to know even better an island that we’d previously visited several times and on which we have found ourselves increasingly at home. We even found time for a bit of fantasy house-hunting – a pursuit made less realistic by the final grim reality of Brexit.

Lanzarote may not be everyone’s cup of tea – much of the island bears the still raw scars of the most recent volcanic eruptions: a legacy of contorted lava flows and bare red scree. But its appeal lies not so much in what it has, as in what it has not. You can count on the fingers of half a hand the number of high-rise hotels or other intrusive tourism developments.

Instead, houses are low, simple whitewashed affairs, green-shuttered if inland and blue-shuttered if by the sea. Slightly taller hotels are restricted to the three main resorts of Costa Teguise, Playa del Carmen and Playa Blanca.

Architecture often mimics more closely the distinctive Manrique style, a style developed by the artist when in New York in the company of the likes of Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock. The former in particular may have encouraged Manrique’s archetypal curved structures and the sharp contrast between immaculate whitewashed walls and the harsh black of the frothy lava stone facings plucked from the very landscape itself.

On his return from America, Manrique threw himself into realising a plan for the island’s tourism that would link development irrevocably with landscape and heritage. But his ideas can be traced back to 1959 when he first cooperated with his friend, José Ramírez, the mayor of the capital, Arrecife, on a plan for the municipal park.

The guiding principle of Manrique’s ideas is the closeness of the relationship between land and custom on the one hand and relatively low-key sustainable tourist attractions on the other.

OK, so you can still do “mass tourism” if you want on Lanzarote, and just stay by the pool at your coastal resort. But even this type of visitor is likely to take an organised tour to some of Manrique’s most celebrated contributions to the tourist economy.

El Diablo restaurant

Chief among these is El Diablo restaurant at Montañas del Fuego, or mountains of fire. It sits atop the still smouldering central volcano of the Timanfaya National Park , affording a panoramic vista of lava fields, cones and craters.

Other attractions are even more closely integrated to the volcanic landscape: Jameos del Agua features limpid pools and a concert hall integrated into lava tunnels; the Cueva de los Verdes, nearby, offers an underground experience to which the Manrique touches are no more than subtle reminders of the artist’s influence.

I hadn’t been to this enormous cave system on previous visits and nor had either of us seen LaGomar, the house conceived by Manriqué and designed by the artist Jesús Soto for the British developer Sam Benady.

When the actor Omar Sharif was in Lanzarote filming The Mysterious Island , he fell in love with this house, hewn from the walls of a quarry in the centre of the island, with distant views towards the old capital of Teguise, the mountains and the ocean.

Having bought it on impulse, the story goes that the actor then lost it in a poker game with Benady. The restaurant by the pool beneath the house changed hands quite recently and was just reopening after a torrid COVID winter: it promised and delivered fine dining at an affordable price, followed by drinks in a cave bar high in the quarry face.

Our extended stay was marked by occasional bouts of rain that executed a certain magic on the arid semi-desert landscape, which gradually began to turn green before our eyes. Relatively little of the island is cultivated these days and we learned that the economics no longer stack up so well as the low-paid crop-pickers can earn more working in the resorts. Perhaps a more welcoming approach towards migrants arriving in small boats from Morocco could offer a more sustainable agricultural solution?

But sweet, little Canarian potatoes are ubiquitous on the menu and there are some gems to be found among the numerous family-owned wineries or bodegas . Traditionally, the grapes are grown on black volcanic soil in semi-circular walled pits that protect them from the prevailing trade winds (see main picture).

Manriqué’s cactus garden

By various means we made exciting new discoveries: the numerous restaurants in the fishing village of Playa Quemada, which we first spotted from the plane window; the coastal village of Punta Mujeres, which a French market stall holder at Teguise told us about; the sleepy hill villages in the north of the island.

Going green – Lanzaratoe had an unusually wet winter

Punta Mujeres, in the north of the island, became our home for a month, with its dozen or so natural swimming pools and its little tapas bars and, just a few miles north, we found untouched sandy bays.

Taking a week on Fuerteventura we saw for ourselves the price paid for not following the Manriqué model: a huge hotel built – corruptly, it is said – in the middle of protected Parque Natural coastal duneland; the utterly superfluous motorway constructed with EU support, but which ends in the middle of the desert.

Manriqué’s influence endures everywhere, and we enjoyed an exhibition of contemporary art in Arrecife, where you could detect his fingerprint on all the works. I did, however, make the uncomfortable discovery that Manrique had fought on Franco’s side during the Civil War. To that observations I should add, however, that his experience so affected him that he went on to decry all war in absolute terms.

Find out more about the Village of Arrieta in our Arrieta travel guide .

Finca de Arrieta map

The village of Arrieta has 400 inhabitants and is set in the northern municipality of Haria, the most traditional area of Lanzarote and ideal for the more independent traveller. This northern part of Lanzarote does not offer purpose-built resorts such as Costa Teguise, Puerto Del Carmen or Playa Blanca. Arrieta is a small traditional Canarian fishing village which has learnt to adapt to meet the demands of some low-key tourism. Among other things, the village offers wonderful sea front fish restaurants, a very good pizzeria take away and a supermarket. As with other villages in the north, Arrieta is peaceful, tranquil and is ideal if you are looking to be away from the neon lit bars and nightclubs found within the tourist resorts of Lanzarote.

Arrieta is one of the prettiest and most authentic fishing villages to still exist in Lanzarote today. It remains unspoiled and there is a rustic charm to many of its historic houses and coastal alleyways.

Arrieta boasts a beautiful beach called “Playa de La Garita” which has fine golden sand and is 810m long. This beach has a restaurant and beach bar and also WC/showers, parking and play park. The waters generally remain calm throughout the year. This beach is ideal for first-time surfing, body boarding, sunbathing, swimming, wave jumping, sand castle making, sunrise spotting, fishing and dining at the beach bar or restaurant.

Anonymous Fantastic small village of eco-living with peaceful surroundings, beach nearby, and warm family feeling. Great selection of different accommodations; we stayed in Eco Casita, perfect for a couple, with our own large front yard. Donkeys, chickens, ducks, swimming pool, honesty shop, Paella& sangria night, super helpful staff, even a quiet yurt for your daily yoga/meditation… No telly in the cottage meant we got to read books and chill out without distractions. Even the weather was perfect combo of sunshine and warmth to banish the December blues! Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in seeing how to holiday off-grid, in quiet and cosy home-village. Donkeys, chickens, a cat… It was perfect for us. Will be going back.
Francesca S We have just had such a fantastic week staying in Eco Casita with our 2 year old daughter. So relaxing and calm with lots to do. No technology was bliss, she spent her week playing at the park, feeding the donkeys, collecting the eggs and playing by the pool and on the beach. Tila and Michelle have thought of everything and Finca De Arrieta is such a beautiful and quirky place that we would definitely return to and recommend to our friends. We loved the non touristy town and the restaurants down on the beach, especially the mojito bar which is a VW van, we loved sitting there and watching the surfers whilst our daughter played at the park. All in all, the perfect week, we will be back, perhaps when it is a little warmer so we can enjoy the pool! Thank you everyone at Finca De Arrieta!!!
