Today's total solar eclipse: When it will be visible in Texas and when the next one is

Texans are preparing for the total solar eclipse that will be visible across the Lone Star State on Monday, April 8.

Dallas and San Antonio will plunge into darkness midday for the full total solar eclipse experience. However, parts of West Texas outside the path of totality can still use  eclipse glasses  to see the moon pass in front of the sun.

The path of totality is the predicted path of the eclipse.

El Paso is not in the path of totality , but viewers here will be able to see a partial eclipse starting at 11:09 a.m. and peaking at 12:25 p.m.

Here are the top things to know about the 2024 total solar eclipse.

What kind of eclipse is on April 8?

On Monday, April 8, parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada will witness a total solar eclipse, which means the moon will completely cover the sun, making it go dark.

What time is the solar eclipse on Monday?

That depends on where you are. In Texas, viewers will be able to see the eclipse beginning at 11:09 a.m. MT and watch the peak at 12:25 p.m. MT The eclipse ends at 1:44 p.m. MT.

Where to find solar eclipse glasses

El Paso Community College Northwest Campus will have  free eclipse glasses  while supplies last.

Eclipse glasses will be provided to attendees of the  La Perla at The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park eclipse viewing party  from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. MT Monday.

You can get free glasses while they last at Sonic Drive-In.

How dark does it get in a total solar eclipse?

During a total solar eclipse, the sky can darken significantly, resembling twilight or even dusk, depending on factors such as atmospheric conditions, the duration of totality and the observer's location. In the path of totality, where the moon completely obscures the sun, the sky can become quite dark, revealing stars and planets that are normally hidden by the sun's glare.

What is the path of totality?

The 2024 total solar eclipse will traverse a path northeast across parts of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

In Mexico, the path of totality includes Sinaloa, Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nayarit.

In the United States, states such as Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Michigan, and Maine will experience totality.

In Canada, the eclipse path includes Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton.

When is the next solar eclipse?

North America won't experience totality again until 2033, with only Alaska getting the view. Then, in 2044, the totality will be confined to Western Canada, Montana, and North Dakota.

After the 2024 eclipse, there won't be another in the Texas region until 2317, according to the National Weather Service.

When was the last solar eclipse?

The last total solar eclipse the United States experienced was in 2017. It was dubbed "The Great American Eclipse" because the last time the United States experienced a path of totality before that was in 1918.

The most recent total solar eclipse within North or Central Texas was in 1878.

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Why is looking at a solar eclipse dangerous without special glasses? Eye doctors explain.

The solar eclipse will be visible for millions of Americans on April 8, 2024, making many excited to see it — but how you watch it matters, since it can be dangerous for your eyes. 

A  solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun's light . When the moon blocks some of the sun, it's a partial solar eclipse, but when moon lines up with the sun, blocking all of its light, a total solar eclipse occurs,  NASA explains . Either way, you need eye protection when viewing.

"The solar eclipse will be beautiful, so I hope that everyone experiences it — but they need to experience it in the right way," said Dr. Jason P. Brinton, an ophthalmologist and medical director at Brinton Vision in St. Louis.

Here's what to know to stay safe.

Why is looking at a solar eclipse dangerous?

Looking at the sun — even when it's partially covered like during an eclipse — can cause eye damage.

There is no safe dose of solar ultraviolet rays or infrared radiation, said  Dr. Yehia Hashad , an ophthalmologist, retinal specialist and the chief medical officer at eye health company Bausch + Lomb.

"A very small dose could cause harm to some people," he said. "That's why we say the partial eclipse could also be damaging. And that's why we protect our eyes with the partial as well as with the full sun."

Some say that during a total eclipse, it's safe to view the brief period time when the moon completely blocks the sun without eye protection. But experts warn against it. 

"Totality of the eclipse lasts only about 1 to 3 minutes based on geographic location, and bright sunlight suddenly can appear as the moon continues to move," notes an eclipse viewing guide published in JAMA , adding, "even a few seconds of viewing the sun during an eclipse" can temporarily or permanently damage your vision. 

Do I need special glasses for eclipse viewing?

Yes.  Eclipse glasses are needed to protect your eyes if you want to look at the eclipse.

Regular sunglasses aren't protective enough for eclipse viewing — even if you stack more than one. 

"There's no amount of sunglasses that people can put on that will make up for the filtering that the ISO standard filters and the eclipse glasses provide," Brinton said.

You also shouldn't look at the eclipse through a camera lens, phone, binoculars or telescope, according to NASA, even while wearing eclipse glasses. The solar rays can burn through the lens and cause serious eye injury.

Eclipse glasses must comply with the  ISO 12312-2 international safety standard , according to NASA, and should have an "ISO" label printed on them to show they comply. The American Astronomical Society  has a list  of approved solar viewers.

Can't find these, or they're sold out near you? You can also  make homemade viewers ,   which allow you to observe the eclipse indirectly — just don't accidentally look at the sun while using one.

How to keep kids safe during the solar eclipse

Since this eclipse is expected to occur around the time of dismissal for many schools across the country, it may be tempting for students to view it without the proper safety precautions while getting to and from their buses. That's why some school districts are  canceling classes early so kids can enjoy the event safely with their families.

Dr. Avnish Deobhakta, vitreoretinal surgeon at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary at Mount Sinai, said parents should also be careful because it can be difficult for children to listen or keep solar eclipse glasses on. 

"You want to actually, in my opinion, kind of avoid them even looking at the eclipse, if possible," he said. "Never look directly at the sun, always wear the right eclipse sunglasses if you are going to look at the sun and make sure that those are coming from a reliable source."

Brinton recommends everyone starts their eclipse "viewing" early, by looking at professional photos and videos of an eclipse online or visiting a local planetarium. 

That way, you "have an idea of what to expect," he said. 

He also recommends the foundation  Prevent Blindness , which has resources for families about eclipse safety.

What happens if you look at a solar eclipse without eclipse glasses?

While your eyes likely won't hurt in the moment if you look at the eclipse without protection, due to lowered brightness and where damage occurs in the eye, beware: The rays can still cause damage .

The harm may not be apparent immediately. Sometimes trouble starts to appear one to a few days following the event. It could affect just one or both eyes.

And while some will regain normal visual function, sometimes the damage is permanent. 

"Often there will be some recovery of the vision in the first few months after it, but sometimes there is no recovery and sometimes there's a degree to which it is permanent," Brinton said. 

How long do you have to look at the eclipse to damage your eyes?

Any amount of time looking at the eclipse without protection is too long, experts say. 

"If someone briefly looks at the eclipse, if it's extremely brief, in some cases there won't be damage. But damage can happen even within a fraction of a second in some cases," Brinton said. He said he's had patients who have suffered from solar retinopathy, the official name for the condition.

Deobhakta treated a patient who watched the 2017 solar eclipse for 20 seconds without proper eye protection. She now has permanent damage in the shape of a crescent that interferes with her vision. 

"The crescent that is burned into the retina, the patient sees as black in her visual field," he said. "The visual deficit that she has will never go away."

How to know if you've damaged your eyes from looking at the eclipse

Signs and symptoms of eye damage following an eclipse viewing include headaches, blurred vision, dark spots, changes to how you see color, lines and shapes. 

Unfortunately, there isn't a treatment for solar retinopathy.

"Seeing an eye care professional to solidify the diagnosis and for education I think is reasonable," Brinton said, but added, "right now there is nothing that we do for this. Just wait and give it time and the body does tend to heal up a measure of it."

Review: Neal Schon ‘Journey Through Time’

Founding member of Journey and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Neal Schon takes us back to one incredible night of live music in 2018 on his new live album Journey Through Time .

Set to drop May 19th, 2023 on the Frontiers Music s.r.l. imprint, the new record documents a live show that happened February 9, 2018 at The Independent in San Francisco, California. It was a benefit concert for fire victims in the Bay Area and was also the debut of Schon and fellow Journey founder Greg Rolie’s Journey Through Time project. JTT is a heavily-muscled band that includes Schon on guitar, Rolie on keyboards and vocals, current Journey member Deen Castronovo on drums and vocals, Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake) on bass, and John Varn on keyboards and vocals that focuses on Journey’s 1970s material, including its often overlooked pre-Steve Perry albums.

The 2018 benefit gig did exactly that. Schon and company put on a blasting two-and-a-half-hour show largely focused on Journey’s ’70s body of work, including the band’s first three albums Journey, Look Into The Future, and Next . Journey’s Steve Perry days were well-represented that night, as well, and the long setlist was balanced, rocking, and fun.

Journey began in 1973 in San Francisco and went on to become one of the defining and most-successful rock bands of the 70s and 80s. The group started life as a Prog/jam outfit but shifted gears with the addition of lead singer Steve Perry, a move that made Journey one of the most colossal rock radio bands of their era. Journey has earned 25 gold and platinum albums, in addition to their 15-time platinum, RIAA Diamond Certified Greatest Hits set. They’ve sold better than 48 million albums in the USA, alone, and over 100 million around the world.

The three-CD set of Journey Through Time kicks off with three early Journey gems in succession. The opening track “I’m Gonna Leave You” is a raging, early 70s-style blues/Prog gem that might surprise fans only used to the band’s later material. Schon and Rollie both turn in cool riffs, intense solos, and the wide-open sense of freedom that was part of the social climate of Journey’s launching-pad days. “Look Into The Future” and “Kohoutek” follow and demonstrate the vision and range that set Journey into motion. Hearing Greg Rolie’s smooth, baritone vocals again is also a long-overdue pleasure.

Drummer and present-day Journey-man Deen Castronovo absolutely owns the high-range, Steve Perry lead vocal parts and does so while putting down world-class beats on the drum kit. Drumming and singing like this at the same time shouldn’t be humanly possible but Deen makes it look like a snap. He captures both the notes and high-flying spirit of Steve Perry’s legendary vocal parts and truly ices the cake of these familiar tunes. Castronovo grabs hold of Journey classics like “La Do Da,” “Walks Like A Lady,” “Feelin’ That Way,” “Lights,” and “Wheel In The Sky” and honors Perry and the band’s legacy with his exceptional talents. Hearing him and Rolie sharing vocals on “Just The Same Way” and “Feelin’ That Way” will make you believe all over again.

Neal Schon’s instantly-identifiable guitar work saturates these songs from front to back and his playing and presence is beyond reproach. He still wails with melody and authority and also displays his underrated rhythm guitar skills in the live environment. Every note he plays is tasty and he never seems to run out of gas.

Since Schon and Rolie are former members of Santana, another of the Bay Area’s musical giants, it only makes sense that they close the night with a couple of their songs. “Black Magic Woman” is deep and meditative, its pulse ebbing and flowing from section to section. Schon rips on it in all sections and the band follows close behind. He even quotes Jimi’s “Third Stone From The Sun” in his solo, which adds more 60s cool to his jamming.

Santana’s “Oye Como Va” closes the show with a joyful feeling that will linger with you for days. This eternal Tito Puente tune always makes people happy and the version on Journey Through Time does nothing to interfere with its magic. How Journey Tried to Shake Things Up on ‘Look Into the Future’

Journey were already at a crossroads after just one jammy studio project.

The live shows weren't the problem. Journey were drawing nicely around the Bay Area concert circuit.

"They were like a jazz/fusion/rock kind of thing," manager Herbie Herbert told Melodic Rock in 2008. "We played with Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Santana and Robin Trower and bands like that. And it just went over perfect, and I loved that original band and many people did."

But then Journey's self-titled debut stalled at a disappointing No. 138. Expectations were far higher for a group that boasted former members of Santana ( Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon ) and Frumious Bandersnatch (Ross Valory and George Tickner), and there were already rumblings from Columbia Records.

"We had built this cult audience in quite a few places, because we had toured extensively for three years – and very hard," Schon told Goldmine in 2013. "I would say nine months out of every year we toured, and we had built quite a following being one of the original jam bands in San Francisco. You know, people really enjoyed seeing us live. We weren't selling any records, but we were selling lots of tickets."

Look Into the Future , issued in January 1976, was perfectly titled. They committed to becoming more song focused, while trying to retain the progressive touches that showcased Journey's musical chops on the first album. "We decided we'd taken that kind of music as far as we could," Rolie told Rolling Stone in 1980.

To some degree they succeeded, but only by separating these two impulses. Side One stacked more commercial-sounding moments like "On a Saturday Nite" and "Anyway" with a cover of "It's All Too Much " from the Beatles ' Yellow Submarine , then Journey stretched out more on the next side: "I'm Gonna Leave You" went just past seven minutes, while the episodic title song became their second-longest released song at 8:13.

They lost George Tickner, the band's rhythm guitarist, along the way – though he still ended up with two songwriting co-credits, "You're on Your Own" and "I'm Gonna Leave You." Undaunted, Journey released Look Into the Future and immediately headed out on a tour that lasted from February through December 1976, concluding at the Winterland in San Francisco.

"Lately, I think the band has gotten more loose and relaxed onstage, and it comes off," Rolie told Tom Vickers in 1976. "With George, there was a tenseness. He wasn't really into it. He likes writing, but onstage he didn't enjoy himself."

Schon also described the lineup shift as a form of addition by subtraction. "There are parts where you miss the sound of another guitar," he told Vickers, "but it gives us more space."

Unfortunately, maintaining that rugged schedule didn't make a substantial impact on sales. Look Into the Future fared better than the band's eponymous first record but got to only No. 100. Still hopeful, Rolie said Journey took it all in stride.

"We were never discouraged, because every time we've gone out on the road, there's been growth," Rolie said back then . "We've learned more about each other, the music and the industry. Journey is a democratic situation that will last, because everyone is a little older now and more aware – and that's the only way a band can work. Everyone has their own musical taste and their own ideas, but we've learned how to use them to improve the group."

Yet it appeared there was an inherent commercial ceiling with this particular mixture of creative voices – especially when former tour mates in Kansas took a germ of an idea from Journey and turned it into a breakthrough hit. "I think if you'll listen to "I'm Gonna Leave [You]" on the Look Into the Future record," Herbert told Melodic Rock, "it's ' Carry On Wayward Son ' by Kansas. They just lifted it."

Journey tried shaking things up again on 1977's Next , toughening up their sound and even handing the microphone to Schon for two songs. But when that project halted at No. 85, larger changes were demanded by the band's label bosses.

"You look up and it's 1977, and they've toured all year – all through Europe with Santana and another big tour with ELO both in '76 and '77, and it just wasn't happening," Herbert noted. "So I was just in a complete scramble, and they were gonna drop the act. So there was a scramble to do something to modify what we were doing. So I said we'll change it: We'll go commercial."

Learn exactly how Einstein's theory of relativity works, and discover how there's nothing in science that says time travel is impossible.

Everyone can travel in time . You do it whether you want to or not, at a steady rate of one second per second. You may think there's no similarity to traveling in one of the three spatial dimensions at, say, one foot per second. But according to Einstein 's theory of relativity , we live in a four-dimensional continuum — space-time — in which space and time are interchangeable.

Einstein found that the faster you move through space, the slower you move through time — you age more slowly, in other words. One of the key ideas in relativity is that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light — about 186,000 miles per second (300,000 kilometers per second), or one light-year per year). But you can get very close to it. If a spaceship were to fly at 99% of the speed of light, you'd see it travel a light-year of distance in just over a year of time. 

That's obvious enough, but now comes the weird part. For astronauts onboard that spaceship, the journey would take a mere seven weeks. It's a consequence of relativity called time dilation , and in effect, it means the astronauts have jumped about 10 months into the future. 

Traveling at high speed isn't the only way to produce time dilation. Einstein showed that gravitational fields produce a similar effect — even the relatively weak field here on the surface of Earth . We don't notice it, because we spend all our lives here, but more than 12,400 miles (20,000 kilometers) higher up gravity is measurably weaker— and time passes more quickly, by about 45 microseconds per day. That's more significant than you might think, because it's the altitude at which GPS satellites orbit Earth, and their clocks need to be precisely synchronized with ground-based ones for the system to work properly. 

The satellites have to compensate for time dilation effects due both to their higher altitude and their faster speed. So whenever you use the GPS feature on your smartphone or your car's satnav, there's a tiny element of time travel involved. You and the satellites are traveling into the future at very slightly different rates.

But for more dramatic effects, we need to look at much stronger gravitational fields, such as those around black holes , which can distort space-time so much that it folds back on itself. The result is a so-called wormhole, a concept that's familiar from sci-fi movies, but actually originates in Einstein's theory of relativity. In effect, a wormhole is a shortcut from one point in space-time to another. You enter one black hole, and emerge from another one somewhere else. Unfortunately, it's not as practical a means of transport as Hollywood makes it look. That's because the black hole's gravity would tear you to pieces as you approached it, but it really is possible in theory. And because we're talking about space-time, not just space, the wormhole's exit could be at an earlier time than its entrance; that means you would end up in the past rather than the future.

Trajectories in space-time that loop back into the past are given the technical name "closed timelike curves." If you search through serious academic journals, you'll find plenty of references to them — far more than you'll find to "time travel." But in effect, that's exactly what closed timelike curves are all about — time travel

There's another way to produce a closed timelike curve that doesn't involve anything quite so exotic as a black hole or wormhole: You just need a simple rotating cylinder made of super-dense material. This so-called Tipler cylinder is the closest that real-world physics can get to an actual, genuine time machine. But it will likely never be built in the real world, so like a wormhole, it's more of an academic curiosity than a viable engineering design.

Yet as far-fetched as these things are in practical terms, there's no fundamental scientific reason — that we currently know of — that says they are impossible. That's a thought-provoking situation, because as the physicist Michio Kaku is fond of saying, "Everything not forbidden is compulsory" (borrowed from T.H. White's novel, "The Once And Future King"). He doesn't mean time travel has to happen everywhere all the time, but Kaku is suggesting that the universe is so vast it ought to happen somewhere at least occasionally. Maybe some super-advanced civilization in another galaxy knows how to build a working time machine, or perhaps closed timelike curves can even occur naturally under certain rare conditions.

This raises problems of a different kind — not in science or engineering, but in basic logic. If time travel is allowed by the laws of physics, then it's possible to envision a whole range of paradoxical scenarios . Some of these appear so illogical that it's difficult to imagine that they could ever occur. But if they can't, what's stopping them? 

Thoughts like these prompted Stephen Hawking , who was always skeptical about the idea of time travel into the past, to come up with his "chronology protection conjecture" — the notion that some as-yet-unknown law of physics prevents closed timelike curves from happening. But that conjecture is only an educated guess, and until it is supported by hard evidence, we can come to only one conclusion: Time travel is possible.

A party for time travelers 

Hawking was skeptical about the feasibility of time travel into the past, not because he had disproved it, but because he was bothered by the logical paradoxes it created. In his chronology protection conjecture, he surmised that physicists would eventually discover a flaw in the theory of closed timelike curves that made them impossible. 

In 2009, he came up with an amusing way to test this conjecture. Hawking held a champagne party (shown in his Discovery Channel program), but he only advertised it after it had happened. His reasoning was that, if time machines eventually become practical, someone in the future might read about the party and travel back to attend it. But no one did — Hawking sat through the whole evening on his own. This doesn't prove time travel is impossible, but it does suggest that it never becomes a commonplace occurrence here on Earth.

The arrow of time 

One of the distinctive things about time is that it has a direction — from past to future. A cup of hot coffee left at room temperature always cools down; it never heats up. Your cellphone loses battery charge when you use it; it never gains charge. These are examples of entropy , essentially a measure of the amount of "useless" as opposed to "useful" energy. The entropy of a closed system always increases, and it's the key factor determining the arrow of time.

It turns out that entropy is the only thing that makes a distinction between past and future. In other branches of physics, like relativity or quantum theory, time doesn't have a preferred direction. No one knows where time's arrow comes from. It may be that it only applies to large, complex systems, in which case subatomic particles may not experience the arrow of time.

Time travel paradox 

If it's possible to travel back into the past — even theoretically — it raises a number of brain-twisting paradoxes — such as the grandfather paradox — that even scientists and philosophers find extremely perplexing.

Killing Hitler

A time traveler might decide to go back and kill him in his infancy. If they succeeded, future history books wouldn't even mention Hitler — so what motivation would the time traveler have for going back in time and killing him?

Killing your grandfather

Instead of killing a young Hitler, you might, by accident, kill one of your own ancestors when they were very young. But then you would never be born, so you couldn't travel back in time to kill them, so you would be born after all, and so on … 

A closed loop

Suppose the plans for a time machine suddenly appear from thin air on your desk. You spend a few days building it, then use it to send the plans back to your earlier self. But where did those plans originate? Nowhere — they are just looping round and round in time.

The cruise phase begins after the spacecraft separates from the rocket, soon after launch. The spacecraft departs Earth at a speed of about 24,600 mph (about 39,600 kph). The trip to Mars will take about seven months and about 300 million miles (480 million kilometers). During that journey, engineers have several opportunities to adjust the spacecraft’s flight path, to make sure its speed and direction are best for arrival at Jezero Crater on Mars. The first tweak to the spacecraft’s flight path happens about 15 days after launch.

• Checking spacecraft health and maintenance
• Monitoring and calibrating the spacecraft and its onboard subsystems and instruments
• Performing attitude correction turns (slight spins to keep the antenna pointed toward Earth for communications, and to keep the solar panels pointed toward the Sun for power)
• Conducting navigation activities, such as trajectory correction maneuvers, to determine and correct the flight path and train navigators before atmospheric entry. The last three correction maneuvers are scheduled during approach.
• Preparing for entry, descent, and landing (EDL) and surface operations , a process which includes tests of communications, including the communications to be used during EDL.

The mission is timed for launch when Earth and Mars are in good positions relative to each other for landing on Mars. That is, it takes less power to travel to Mars at this time, compared to other times when Earth and Mars are in different positions in their orbits. As Earth and Mars orbit the Sun at different speeds and distances, once about every 26 months, they are aligned in a way that allows the most energy-efficient trip to Mars.

A bag becomes a different thing entirely when worn by different personalities — similar to how no one perfume smells the same on two different people. To test out this idea, we invited four different artists to style the same bag into their personal look and lifestyle for one day, dreaming up places across L.A. where they would wear it. The bag? The Acne Studios rivet wine box bag from the brand’s spring/summer ’24 collection. It felt like a bag tough enough to withstand a long day in L.A. and lightweight enough to not drag you down.

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m a multihyphenate. I’m a performer, a singer, a DJ, I throw events. I have a charity, Rings Alliance, for trans and queer artists. We’re still getting our footing but you’ll be hearing more about that soon.

Describe your personal style.

I’ve always been really rebellious. And my mom says she knew the moment that she was pregnant with me that I was going to only do what I wanted. I think my style reflects that. Even the things that you would think I would care about — like what’s trending, what the standard of fashion or music is — I never really care. If it hits me, I wear it. And if it sounds good to me, I do it, because I can make anything work. I mean that in life as well as in my music and also in my style. I think my self, my work and personal style all reflect someone that works really hard for themselves and by themselves. It’s a reflection of ambition, being daring, being exciting, and how to bring those things together because it is really remarkable to do that in a world that does not champion and welcome that. (I’m blessed to have found a community and a personal world that does.) My style reflects that person, and my effort toward being great and having fun.

Talk to me about dreaming up an outfit around this Acne Studios bag.

For the last few years I’ve really been into these really small bags that don’t have a lot of space — I love a clutch size. So when I saw the bag I was excited because it was more spacious and had this rectangular shape so I knew that I could fit a lot of things in it, which meant that I had more options to wear things that allowed for a sleek [look]. I don’t have to wear pockets because my purse can hold it all, so I have these thigh-high boots on. I definitely thought about how flexible [the bag] would be for going out or even traveling because I don’t like to travel with a lot. I like to have as much as I can fit in my purse and still be sexy, cute and ready to go.

How does sense of place inform sense of style? How do you travel through L.A. with style in mind?

I’m usually in what I like to call butch-wares. I definitely like to be comfy when I travel through L.A., especially in the daytime — I’m not trying to put on a look. I also don’t want to be bogged down by the idea that dolls [trans women] need to present super feminine or hyper-femme to be able to pass through life. Passability is not even a concern for me. I just try to be as comfortable as possible because I’m doing so much at all times — why would I want to be uncomfortable on top of working as hard as I work? But, there’s nothing more c— than having a fab bag on you. Sweats or not, a fab bag is a fab bag. Like, actually, let me dress more bummy and pull out the Acne bag.
