- The incident took place at Woburn Safari Park in the UK.
The Woburn Safari Park in the UK’s Ridgmont, got creative recently when heavy rains transformed part of the bear enclosure into a temporary lake. Taking advantage of this, zookeepers decided to introduce an unusual activity for their North American black bears: a swan boat.
With 11 bears roaming the 13-acre enclosure, the safari park placed a pedal-powered swan boat in the water, filled with tempting treats like honey and monkey nuts. The goal was to encourage the bears to explore the new addition and enjoy some fun and stimulation.
Photos and videos shared on social media captured the bears' reactions as they investigated the bird-shaped boat. To the delight of both keepers and visitors, the curious bears climbed onto the boat, eager to reach the tasty treats inside.
"Keepers and visitors alike were delighted when the bears actually climbed onto the boat to reach their food," the park shared on social media. "They could be spotted climbing all over, playing with, and sniffing the boat with great curiosity."

Bears swan around in pedalo at flooded Woburn Safari Park
- Woburn Safari Park
- Bedfordshire
- Monday 25 March 2024 at 7:00am
Bears and swans are not normally seen together, but visitors have been treated to quite a spectacle at Woburn Safari Park, Bedfordshire.
The black bears have been enjoying a novelty swan pedalo which has been added to a waterlogged area of their 13-acre enclosure.
Keeper Tommy Babington explained: “ There's been so much wet weather this year, that a new mini lake has formed in the black bears' drive-through at Woburn Safari Park, so we had the idea of turning this into interesting enrichment for them.
"The 'sleuth' of bears was immediately intrigued by their new neighbour and wasted no time in investigating the swan peddle boat.”
The young sibling black bears are two males and two females, known as Harvard, Maple, Colorado and Aspen.
Bears are naturally curious animals and keepers at Woburn Safari Park say they encourage this with all kinds of enrichment through their habitat to keep their minds and bodies active.
Mr Babington said: "The swan boat enrichment may be a less conventional approach to stimulating their natural behaviours, but it certainly was a hit."

Bears ride a pedalo after safari park floods
Bears at a safari park have been spotted enjoying a ride on a pedalo after heavy rain created a temporary lake.
After the pond formed in the black bear enclosure at Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire, staff decided to take advantage of the new terrain. They borrowed a swan-shaped pedalo and left it by the edge of the water – and the bears didn’t take long to investigate.
One by one, the group of bears – also known as a sleuth – began to climb into the boat as it floated until all four seats were taken.
“There’s been so much wet weather this year that a new mini lake has formed in the black bears drive-through at Woburn Safari Park, so we had the idea of turning this into interesting enrichment for them,” said Tommy Babington, deputy head of the carnivores section at Woburn Safari Park .
“The sleuth of bears was immediately intrigued by their new neighbour and wasted no time in investigating the swan peddle boat.”
North American black bears require lots of stimulation and opportunities for play – especially entering the summer months, when they are most active.
The park is home to adult male Chuck as well as three females named Indiana, Phoenix, and Dixie. The sleuth also includes juvenile male Koda, and females Georgia and Denver.
“It was great fun for visitors to see them climb on board, and we love devising new ways to provide food, scent and habitat enrichment that stimulates their natural foraging behaviours,” said Mr Babington.
Staff shared the pictures on social media, attracting almost 80,000 likes in under 24 hours.
“Oh, to be a bear floating in a swan boat in the rain,” said one commenter.
Another referenced Michael Rosen’s 1989 picture book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, writing: “We can’t go over it, we can’t go under it, we have to go through it!”

Bedfordshire: Black bears at Woburn Safari Park ride on swan pedalos
The four young bears, Harvard, Maple, Colorado, and Aspen, enjoyed riding on the pedalos at Woburn Safari Park in Befordshire.
Saturday 23 March 2024 22:56, UK
A lucky group of black bears were treated to a pedalo ride after a lake formed in their enclosure.
After heavy rain created a mini lake in their 13-acre reserve, keepers at Woburn Safari Park decided to float a swan pedalo on the water.
According to Tommy Babington, deputy head of the carnivore section at the park in Bedfordshire , the bears were "immediately intrigued" by their new neighbour and "wasted no time in investigating" it.
The pedalo is usually used elsewhere on the site but was awaiting new pedals, Mr Babington said.
"It was great fun for visitors to seeing them climb on board, and we love devising new ways to provide food, scent and habitat enrichment that stimulates their natural foraging behaviours," he said.

Four bears at a safari park in Bedfordshire were treated to a very relaxing activity this week.
After the bears' paddock flooded, keepers at Woburn Safari Park brought in a pedalo as a unique bit of entertainment.
Deputy Head of Carnivores, Tommy Babbington, said the bears were "immediately intrigued" by the arrival of the swan-shaped peddle boat.
Mr Babbington said that the boat was "certainly was a hit."

The four swan-riding American black bears are called Harvard, Maple, Colorado and Aspen.
Black bears are commonly found in forests across the USA, Canada and parts of Mexico. While many black bears do have dark black fur, they are known to have brown, grey and white fur too.
Despite sharing a continent with two other famous bear species - the grizzly and the polar bear - they are actually more closely related to the Asian black bear.
Black bears are very social animals that need lots of time to play together, particularly in the months after their winter hibernation.
"Bears are naturally very curious animals, and keepers will encourage this with all kinds of enrichment through their habitat as this keeps their minds and bodies active," said Mr Babbington.
