A durable golf travel bag is essential for protecting your clubs and giving you peace of mind whether you’re traveling by car or airplane to one of the world’s best courses. While there are plenty of storage options for safely traveling with your clubs, we tested the best golf travel bags based on qualities like durability, portability, and capacity.

Our top pick for the best golf travel bag overall is the Club Glove Last Bag Large Pro golf travel bag, which thoroughly impressed us. The bag is made with durable nylon material with plenty of padding to ensure that your clubs make it to your destination safely. We were able to fit clubs, clothes, golf balls, and other accessories into the bag without any issues. If you’re looking for a hardshell case or a budget-friendly bag, we found options for a variety of categories to fit the needs of all golfers.

Best Overall

Club glove last bag large pro.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

It’s built to last with single webbing reinforcement and burst-proof construction.

The bag is on the heavier side.

The Club Glove Last Bag Large Pro golf travel bag is one of the best-made travel bags we've seen. Fit for a weekend golf getaway , the bag can comfortably fit a set of clubs in a standard-sized carrier, golf balls, shirts, shorts, towels, and two pairs of golf shoes between the main compartment and two exterior pockets. Despite the 45-pound weight after packing, we thought the balance was evenly distributed throughout the bag and the inline skate wheels rolled smoothly and felt sturdy due to the plastic wheelbase that is designed for high-impact travel. We noted the high-quality feel of the water-resistant nylon material that adds durability to the bag, which truly feels like it will last a lifetime.

The bag is outfitted with self-lubricating YKK zippers and ITW Nexus buckles that come from a manufacturer that makes military-grade hoops, locks, and buckles. An aluminum stiff arm to reinforce the padded protection for impact during traveling is included. We flew with this bag twice in one month of testing and it still looks like it just came out of the box. The durability, functionality, and sleek design of the Club Glove Last Bag Large Pro Golf Travel Bag make it well worth the price for golfers that are planning to travel with their clubs.

Best Budget

Caddydaddy constrictor 2 travel cover.

This bag includes large pockets that can store all of your extra gear.

The sides aren't padded, so you may want to add cushioning to protect your clubs.

For frequent travelers or golfers who want a bag that can store even their bulkiest gear, this CaddyDaddy bag is the perfect option. Not only is the bag itself large enough to store all of your clubs, but we love that it also features side pockets big enough to pack your shoes and even extra clothing. Even with all of this space, the bag still doesn't feel bulky.

Made of thick rubber and nylon, we feel confident this bag won't break, tear, or otherwise fall apart making it a great value. The fabric is also thick and well-stitched. To give you added peace of mind, it comes with a one-year full replacement warranty so you can test it for yourself.

Most Spacious

Caddydaddy golf club travel cover with wheels.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

The interior has tons of room for clothing or shoes in addition to golf clubs.

It has straps that are slightly uncomfortable.

The CaddyDaddy First Class Premium Padded Golf Club Travel Cover with Wheels has tons of space for not only clubs, but golf shoes, clothing, and anything else you would ever need on a golf trip as well. Since the golf travel bag weighs just 10 pounds, golfers can pack up to 40 pounds of clubs, clothes, and other accessories before reaching the general 50-pound checked bag limit for most airlines. We loved the spacious side pockets for toiletries and golf shoes, as well as the well-placed straps that can be tucked in during traveling to prevent damage.

The weight of the golf bag is mostly evenly balanced, and the wheels and handles make it easy to carry and maneuver; however, the top handle could have been a little more comfortable. The materials and the zippers of the bag feel durable and well-made. We're confident that this bag would last a very long time and would not be something you'd have to worry about replacing anytime soon.

Best Softside

Sun mountain clubglider meridian travel cover.

  • Capacity 4.8 /5

There are fold-out legs in the center with wheels that make rolling the bag even easier.

Travelers might want to consider a stiff arm for added protection.

For golfers looking for a simple yet functional golf travel bag, the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian Travel Cover is a solid option. The design of the bag includes everything you need for hassle-free packing and travel experience, including a spacious interior for a cart or stand bag, two exterior pockets, and a pull-out leg mechanism with an additional pair of wheels besides the ones at the bottom of the bag. We found it very easy to collapse the legs in and out and the bag rolled a lot more smoothly than expected.

The high-quality, durable feel of the handles on the front, bottom, and middle of the bag equally impressed us by making it a breeze to lift and maneuver comfortably. While the nylon exterior material and padding feel sturdy and durable, the bag would likely only protect golf clubs against low-impact hits.

Most Durable

Club glove collegiate travel cover with stiff arm.

PGA Tour Superstore

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 4.9 /5

It comes with a stiff arm to protect the heads of the clubs.

Packing the clubs was a tight fit with the length.

Traveling by air with golf clubs can be risky considering the potential for rough handling that comes with checking in luggage, but the Club Glove Last Bag Collegiate Travel Cover with Stiff Arm is made of high-quality materials and includes a stiff arm that is designed to protect gear from hard impact. The adjustable stiff arm is made of nylon plastic and lightweight aluminum, and although it doesn’t take up much room, we had to jostle the bag to get the stiff arm in with the golf clubs. With the smaller-sized interior, we appreciated the two large exterior pockets that can fit items like shoes, clothing, or sunscreen. The fully-packed bag is comfortable to carry with top, bottom, and middle straps that evenly distribute the weight of the lengthy bag and we liked how it can stand up on its own.

After flying with this Club Glove design, there weren’t any scuffs or damage to the bag. The exterior of the bag is made of water-resistant ballistic nylon fabric and the backing has single webbing reinforcement — a common fabric used for climbing, military gear, and parachutes.

Best Portability

Izzo golf high roller.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

There are six wheels on the bottom of the bag so it can be rolled upright.

It feels slightly top-heavy.

The Izzo High Roller golf bag impressed us with how easy it was to transport by wheeling or carrying it. The six wheels on the bottom of the bag make it possible to push or pull it while standing upright. In addition, the bag can collapse down to just 12 inches for easy storage while traveling or at home.

While the bag felt a little top-heavy while being wheeled through an airport, the handles made it easy to lift and hold onto while rolling the bag. Even if the bag were to fall over, it has a solid amount of protective padding on the inside and outside, and it’s made of tear-resistant nylon that feels sturdy and durable. The interior of the bag is large enough for golf clubs and extra shirts, and the exterior pocket is big enough for a pair of golf shoes, but it was a tighter fit than we would’ve preferred. We think the Izzo High Roller bag is perfect for golfers who could benefit from having exceptional portability and durability while traveling through airports.

Best Hybrid

Caddydaddy golf travel bag cover with hard case top.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

Only the top half is hardshell, which makes storing the bag much easier.

It feels top-heavy while carrying.

The CaddyDaddy Enforcer Golf Travel Bag Cover with Hard Case Top is designed with traveling golfers in mind, especially those who live in big cities where storage space is limited. This golf bag has a unique design where the top half is a hardshell case and the bottom half is softside. The half hardshell gives you the protection you want for your clubs and we love how the bag can compress into itself, making it more space efficient for storing when not in use.

The exterior of the bag has two pockets for storing balls or shoes and although there aren’t any pockets on the inside, there was a good amount of room left over for clothes. Though the hardshell top makes it slightly top heavy, the bag maneuvers well on the inline skate wheels at the bottom, while the top, bottom, and center handle make it easy to lift the bag into a car or onto a weight scale at the airport.

Best Lightweight

Tourtrek tc pro travel cover.

Dick's Sporting Goods

  • Durability 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

It feels lightweight whether it’s being pushed or pulled over a variety of surfaces.

The interior of the bag could be bigger.

The TourTrek TC Pro Travel Cover offers an abundance of protective padding and excellent portability. We think this bag is a fantastic value thanks to durable design and interior space that’s roomy enough for a set of golf clubs and two mesh pockets for accessories, as well as an exterior pocket for a pair of shoes. The cushioning is very generous and the bag feels protective and sturdy with 360-degree padding to keep your golf clubs safe whether you’re traveling by air or car. The handles are padded as well, making them comfortable to hold onto while lifting or rolling the bag. And it includes a lock and key set for an additional layer of security and peace of mind.

Weighing 6.6 pounds, this golf travel bag is lightweight and takes up less of the allotted 50-pound weight maximum that most airlines limit checked bags . While we think the interior could be a little bit bigger, this golf travel bag has high-quality features that lead us to believe it will protect golf clubs and last a long time with prolonged use, too.

Watch How We Test Travel Products

We had our expert product testers and golfers take 19 golf travel bags on the road to find out which ones will keep your clubs safe whether you’re flying or driving. Our testers evaluated the bags by flying, driving, walking around, and carrying the bags and rating various attributes on a scale from one to five based on capacity, design, durability, and portability.

Our testers packed their golf clubs into the travel bags and noted how easy it was to place the clubs into them and if there was room leftover for clothes, shoes, golf balls, or other accessories between the main compartment and any pockets. While packing the bags, we checked the quality of the zippers and buckles, as well as how much padding there was and if it felt sufficient for protecting the clubs. The bags with the highest ratings for capacity were spacious with extra room leftover, and the best performing bags for design had thoughtful and intuitive features that had golfers in mind and made packing easier.

After packing up the travel bags, our traveling golfers tested portability by carrying and wheeling the bag to get a feel for how it maneuvers. The top performing bags for portability were exceptionally easy to lift and wheel with comfortable, padded straps and handles. Durability of the travel bags was tested when they were transported by airplane or car. Our five-star ratings for durability went to the travel bags that had no damage to the exterior or items on the interior after being used and gave us confidence that they would hold up well with prolonged use. The testers determined that the bags with the best value performed as or better than expected given the price, especially pricier bags that needed robust justification for the cost.

Other Golf Travel Bags We Liked

While there were plenty of well-performing golf travel bags, there were a few listed below that almost made our list of best golf travel bags but fell short during testing.

Samsonite Golf Deluxe 3 Piece Travel Set : The bag is functional and has a sleek design, but there isn’t much padding and the zippers are plastic, which made us question the durability of the bag while flying.

Samsonite Hard Side Golf Case : The hardshell feels durable, but there isn’t much give so it was a tight fit to get the golf clubs in, and the case is difficult to store since it can’t break down.

Amazon Basics Soft-sided Golf Travel Bag : This bag is very affordable, but has an unstructured bottom, so it can't stand up on its own.

SKB Cases ATA Deluxe Standard Hard Travel Golf Case : This case was built to withstand a lot of rough handling and includes TSA-approved locks, but can become heavy due to its thick plastic.

Bag Boy Golf T10 Hard Top Cover : For minimalist golfers, this simple bag fits just what you need, but won't give you room for extra equipment or gear.

Other Golf Gear You May Need

When you're heading out for a long day on the course, be sure you're prepared with everything you need from sunscreen to golf gloves to ensure you stay completely focused on enjoying the game.

Titleist Players Flex Men’s Golf Glove: These high-performance gloves are a classic for a reason. The cabretta leather is silky smooth, offering optimal comfort and breathability, so your hands won't sweat mid-swing. Plus, the Satin Net materials across the knuckles provide plenty of flexibility.

Peter Millar Solid Performance Jersey Polo : If you're someone who gets caught up in the game and forgets to reapply sunscreen, this golf shirt is for you. Not only is it made of moisture-wicking materials in 13 vibrant colors, but it provides UPF 50+ sun protection as well, so you can stay safe without even thinking about it.

Adidas Men's Tour360 22 Golf Shoes : These shoes provide excellent cushioning to keep you comfortable all day long, and still feature 11 metal spikes for traction and grip. They're also designed with roomy toe boxes and heel reinforcement to ensure your foot stays in place.

Wilson Sleeveless Club Dress : This stylish golf dress is made with four-way stretch fabric that is breathable and feels good even in extreme heat. It also features hidden and roomy pockets so you can store any essentials you may want ready and on-hand.

Tips for Buying a Golf Travel Bag

Consider buying a stiff arm .

Whether you’re buying a hardshell or softside golf travel bag, a stiff arm can add another layer of protection to your golf clubs. A stiff arm is usually an adjustable metal rod with a plastic disc at the the top of it that extends longer than the driver or longest golf club. The rod is placed into a golf bag to absorb the hit if the bag is tossed around and prevent the clubs from being directly impacted.

Hardshell versus softside

When looking for a travel golf bag, you'll want to look at durability and padding. Both hardshell and softside golf travel bags can prevent damage to your golf clubs while traveling and are a worthwhile investment for golfers that travel several times per year. A hardshell suitcase can get more scuffed than a softside golf bag, but you might not need to buy a stiff arm since a plastic case offers a more structured layer of protection. Whereas a softside bag might need extra protection like a stiff arm, it’s easier to store a soft bag than a bulky hardshell case that can’t be folded down. Some airlines will only cover damaged or lost clubs that are in a hardshell case, so be sure to check with the airline to find out the policies.

Look at the types of wheels

From upright wheels to inline skate wheels, golf bags are created with a variety of options to make transport easier for all types of players. You should look at wheels that will smoothly and easily roll over different terrains without adding weight to the overall bag.

You’ll want to make sure your golf bag and clubs can fit in a travel bag. While you don’t want to squeeze your clubs inside, you won’t want them swimming in a roomy case either. If there is extra room in your travel bag, stuffing the sides with clothes or towels can help keep everything in place, especially if you’re flying. If your club heads can be removed and covered, that can further prevent damage to your gear.

Every airline will be different but most follow the same policies as regular check-in luggage regarding weight and size limitations. The weight limit for check-in luggage, including golf clubs, is almost always 50 pounds or less. If your bag weighs more, there will likely be a surcharge fee. Airlines also have different restrictions and policies for packing golf shoes or balls in your bag, and coverage for lost golf bags can be dependent on the type of golf travel bag. For peace of mind, consider securing an AirTag holder with a tracker to your golf bag.

Generally, airlines do not pay travelers for damaged golf clubs. Some, like American Airlines , may compensate if the equipment traveled in a hard-sided case that is visibly damaged and was properly packed, but you should always check your specific airline's policies before flying to guarantee safe and secure travel.

Club Glove / Amazon

For the traveling golfer, schlepping golf clubs can be a bit of a hassle. They're big and bulky. So, on flights, you have to check them, and more annoyingly, you have to wait for them since they usually get unloaded last with the oversized luggage. But most of us would much rather play with our own sticks than some random rental set. Plus, the right travel cover can minimize most of the inconvenience.

A great bag protects your clubs, and you can use it to store your shoes, clothes, and anything else you might need on a golf trip.

Over the past few months, we tested 21 of the top travel bags on the market and rated them for capacity, design, portability, durability, and value. Our top pick, Club Glove's Last Bag Large Pro Golf Travel Bag, earned a perfect score in every category. It boasts construction that should last for years if not decades, rolls effortlessly through airports, and, when packed correctly, easily holds enough gear for a multiple round trip.

But as good as it is, it may not fit every golfer. So for the player who likes to see the options, here are the travel golf bags we tested.

How we tested.

  • What to Look For

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, club glove last bag large pro.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

Large capacity

Easy to pack

High-quality construction

It is on the pricier side

Club Glove's Last Bag is the gold standard for golf travel bags. It's a favorite for touring professionals and amateurs alike thanks to its durable construction and use of high-quality materials.

The archetypical design features an enclosure for your golf bag and clubs and two side pockets for shoes or clothes. The capacity is substantial, and a creative traveler could easily cram a week's worth of gear into the last bag and not need to check a second piece of luggage. The shell is double stitched with thick, water-resistant nylon, while the padded upper area should better protect club heads. The hard plastic bottom is outfitted with in-line skate wheels and bearings to keep you rolling smoothly through airports and stations. The Pro model has a Stiff Arm to protect your driver and fairway woods snapped by careless baggage handlers.

Club Glove offers the Last Bag in 22 colors and personalized embroidery, so you can easily spot yours after it makes its way off the plane to the "oversized baggage" carousel.

Our tester took it on two trips from Florida to Michigan and Connecticut and found it incredibly easy to pack and maneuver through airports. I have personally used this bag for nearly ten years. Scores of flights later, it's a bit dirty but hardly worse for the wear, and I have zero thoughts of replacing it.

Handles in all the right places

Wheels pivot for added maneuverability

Slightly on the small side

It does not include a support rod to protect woods

The race for Best Overall was tight, and the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian Travel Cover was a serious contender for the title. It’s been Golf Digest Editors’ Choice for Travel Bags for the past six years.

Configured with one main pocket for your sticks and two smaller compartments for gear, the ClubGlider is easy to pack and store. There’s plenty of room for either a stand or cart bag, but if you’re the kind of player who schleps around a staff bag, you might need a larger travel case… and to pay the overweight fees. The ballistic nylon shell is hearty and buttressed at the top with some padding. According to our tester, “The dense foam to protect the club heads will help on low to medium impacts, but I would feel safer buying an extra $20 to $30 support rod to add to this bag, and you will be all set.”

The fold-out legs feature pivoting wheels which enhance maneuverability when you need to run a zig-zag pattern to make a flight or head off a large group to the taxi line.

Best Budget

Amazon basics soft-sided golf travel bag.

Can’t stand on its own

Potential for durability issues

No, you don't have to pay a fortune for a travel bag. This Amazon Basics offering ticks quite a few boxes for a modest sum. Classically modeled, the bag gives the user a place to store the clubs and a pair of pockets for clothing, shoes, or anything else you might need on the course.

Though it's on the smaller side, our tester found it had more space than he thought at first glance. After putting the Amazon bag through its paces, he said it "rolled well when pushed or pulled over asphalt or gravel and is comfortable enough to lift. However, the unstructured bottom made it impossible for me to get the bag to stand upright on its own."

Overall, the construction was good, but a few loose threads did not inspire confidence in its long-term durability. Also, anyone considering the Amazon Basics bag will likely want to buy a Stiff Arm or alternate protective rod to prevent damage to their valuable graphite shafts.

PGA Tour Superstore

  • Portability 4.5 /5

Great design

Rugged construction

Somewhat difficult to turn

A slightly smaller version of our Best Overall model, the Club Glove Last Bag Collegiate Travel Cover is an excellent option for shorter golf trips or anyone who is going to take a second piece of luggage with them.

Our tester, who checked this bag for a flight and took it for a ride to a course in their car, heralded the “good and straight-forward design” as well as the strong YKK zipper, high-quality fabric, and strap construction. In the negative column, they found making tight turns a bit awkward.

The thoughtful layout allows the traveler to utilize the gear pockets for storage and fit extra clothes or even a smaller backpack into the main compartment alongside golf clubs. The overall balance of the bag, even when full, allows the Club Glove to stand on its own. So when you’re checking in, your sticks won’t topple over and onto the next passenger in line.

Exterior Dimensions: 50 x 15 x 14 inches | Material: Nylon and plastic | Weight: 8 pounds

TripSavvy / Karen Chen

Best Durability

Caddydaddy golf club travel cover with wheels.

  • Design 4.5 /5

Great Storage

Sturdy materials

Folds small for storage

Lack of padding on the handle

Our tester found the CaddyDaddy First Class Premium Padded Golf Club Travel Cover with Wheels was roomy enough to store golf clubs and pack hiking or beach gear. Plus, as the bag weighs in at 10 pounds, that leaves you 40 pounds before you hit an overweight surcharge from the airline.

Well-balanced, the CaddyDaddy corners well and is easy to transport. The Ultra-Durable 1000D Ballistic Nylon is thick, straps are securely fastened to the bag, and the YKK zippers are high quality. Though our tester would have liked more padding in the handle you use to pull the bag.

While the top features two layers of foam to protect your club heads, we recommend a protective rod to keep your driver safe. CaddyDaddy offers customers a two-year replacement warranty in case TSA gets a little too handsy during a search.

Exterior Dimensions: 51 x 15 x 13 inches | Material: Nylon and plastic | Weight: 10 pounds

Best Roller

Izzo golf high roller.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

It rolls like a dream

Quality construction

Easy to load

Small front exterior pocket

Six. Count ‘em. Six wheels. Four that swivel allow you to push the IZZO High Roller bag upright, and two in-line skate wheels let the user pull it along. So travelers can better navigate airport corridors en route to baggage check or quickly escape the madness from the carousel to the car.

Unlike most travel bags, the IZZO features a top flap that zips all the way around, which makes loading your clubs a total breeze. Through that opening, you’ll also find two internal elastic storage pockets.

While our tester found the IZZO well made from high-quality materials, including 1680D nylon and substantial internal foam padding, there was a slight design flaw. The exterior pocket is too small to fit a pair of golf shoes comfortably. On the plus side, they appreciated the ability to fold the bag for storage in “tight spaces.” Much like some of the other options on this list, the IZZO doesn’t come with a protective rod. So, if you do buy the IZZO, consider adding one to your cart as well.

Dick's Sporting Goods

  • Durability 4.8 /5

Good design

Lightweight

Limited capacity

The TourTrek TC PRO Travel Cover scored high marks in nearly every category. Our tester liked the overall design, the two interior mesh pockets, and the exterior shoe pocket. It features ample padding and enough structure to stand upright on its own. Plus, the high-quality construction gave a lasting impression to the bag.

While the TourTrek is incredibly light (6.6 pounds), the capacity is somewhat wanting. But the full-length horseshoe zipper allows players to pack their stand or cart bag easily. Also included is a zipper lock to keep unwanted parties from sneaking a peak at your gear.

The Tour Trek uses in-line wheels for making a bee-line through the traveling hordes and features padded handles for added comfort when pushing or pulling it through the airport or station. It also comes in seven colors and patterns, including “Red Hawaiian” and “Pineapple” for players who dig an Island vibe.

The hard shell on the top of the CaddyDaddy Enforcer protects better than padding, but the maker still managed to keep the overall weight at nine pounds. So travelers still have 41 pounds of capacity before hitting an overweight baggage fee.

While overall, the bag seems incredibly durable, part and parcel, thanks to the hard plastic, one drawback to the fortification is that it makes the bag a bit top-heavy. So, the CaddyDaddy can’t quite stand on its own, and because the hard plastic doesn’t cover all the bag, we would still recommend a Stiff Arm or other protective rod to prevent damage to your valuable club shafts.

But the bag does boast plenty of room, and because it’s not an entire hardshell, you can collapse it for storage. Two exterior pockets will fit golf shoes, balls, rain gear, extra clothes, or anything else you might want to take on a trip to the links.

Exterior Dimensions: 51 x 13 x 13 inches | Material: Nylon and plastic | Weight: 9 pounds

Sun Mountain Kube Travel Cover : Our tester liked the collapsible nature of the design but found the handling cumbersome. Since it is a two-wheel bag, you can't roll it vertically in busy airports and transit situations.

Callaway OGIO Alpha Travel Cover : While this bag offers good durability and value, our tester found the design basic and a bit tough to lug around.

OutdoorMaster Padded Golf Club Travel Cover : After putting it through its paces, our expert felt it lacked room for all the essentials.

CaddyDaddy Golf Constrictor 2 Travel Cover : Overall, it's a well-made bag, but our tester found the area around the base somewhat "flimsy."

Himal Soft-sided Golf Travel Bag : We were impressed with the foldability and ease of storage. But It won't stand upright and may have capacity issues for players who pack heavily.

Titleist Players Travel Cover : Our tester did not feel confident this option would hold up during air travel.

Samsonite Golf Deluxe 3 Piece Travel Set : While it comes with a nice duffel and shoe carrier, this bag doesn't appear as durable as other options.

SKB Cases ATA Deluxe Standard Hard Travel Golf Case : The full hardshell design is heavy, and our tester couldn't cram much into it beyond clubs.

Samsonite HardSide Golf Case : The hardshell and soft interior give a luxury vibe. But our tester found the capacity lacking.

Bag Boy Golf T10 Hard Top Cover : Beyond the minimal storage for things beyond a set of clubs, our tester was disappointed by the design and color options.

Founders Club Golf Travel Bag : It will stand up independently, and the hard top offers additional protection. But our tester found it difficult to load.

All the tested bags were inspected thoroughly, packed with clubs, and as many golf accessories and clothing as would fit and rolled, either in a simulated journey to and around an airport or on an actual golf trip.

Our testers rated each bag with a one-to-five score for capacity, design, portability, durability, and value. Our editorial team then used those ratings to determine which products we recommend.

What to Look for in Golf Travel Bags

A golf travel bag isn’t something players want to buy frequently. So golfers will want one that is going to last. You’ll want to check out the seams, zippers, and clasps to ensure the bag feels well constructed.

While heavy-duty nylon and plastic add weight, it’s also more protective and should last longer than lighter materials.

Additional Features

Much like with golf pants , pockets are key. Think about what you like to pack on a golf trip and where those things might fit in the bag. Also, some wheel configurations allow the bags to roll standing up.

Hard-sided versus soft-sided

Hard-sided cases offer more protection for your clubs. But they are heavier and more challenging to store. Another consideration when choosing between these two options—many airlines will only cover damages to golf clubs in hard-sided cases.

Golf clubs must be checked and can not be loose. (You wouldn’t want your valuable sticks falling out on the conveyor.) You can use a bag, case, or even a cardboard box.

Travel bags and cases help shield your clubs from damage. A protective rod can also absorb impact to club heads from the top down.

Though covers shouldn’t need much maintenance, most travel bags can be cleaned with a soapy cloth. On the other hand, grass from the course can collect on the inside and can easily be dispatched with a vacuum’s hose attachment.

A quality travel bag is a must-have for the globetrotting golfer. Your clubs are your prized possessions and taking them away with you can always be a risk, so keep that risk as low as possible with these bags. At Golf Monthly we are all regular golfers and all manage to go on golf trips often and as such we have managed to test a lot of different models out there.

Therefore we think we are in a good position to pick out the best golf travel bag whilst also giving you advice on the several things to consider. First they have to be strong and able to deal with the trials and tribulations of travel in planes, trains and automobiles. Strong materials, padding, and excellent construction are all vital with models like the Motocaddy and Titleist leading the way here.

Additionally maneuverability is a huge benefit too because awkward travel bags make everything more difficult. Ones that move easily with strong wheels are hugely important which makes the Sun Mountain a top choice. We also think it is good for travel bags to be easy to identify because you never know what can happen in an airport in terms of people accidentally taking your luggage or clubs. As such the Ogio Alpha is one of the best out there and there are plenty of other models with distinctive designs as well.

(Finally we also recommend taking a look at some of our other guides too, such as the best golf luggage , best golf bags , and the best golf tops .)

MacGregor VIP II Premium Travel Cover

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The VIP II Premium travel cover offers all the durable protection and ease of use of the Deluxe model, with a few extra features for added peace of mind - like additional padding around the top of the cover increases the layer of protection for the clubs, while an internal support strap keeps clubs secure during transit. We cannot stress how much of a difference these little design details make. As some of the best golf clubs can cost a lot of money you're going to want to ensure that your bag has a lot of protection on offer to keep them safe.

Three heavy duty external straps provide a fail safe seal on the cover and lockable dual zips add a final level of security that makes this travel cover very good value for money. There is also plenty of space to throw in the clothing and footwear that didn’t make it into your suitcase. And to give you an idea of how much space there is, there’s enough to accommodate a 49-inch driver. We should also mention the price because despite having the word Premium in the name, it definitely comes at the value end of the price spectrum which is very appealing to us.

Sun Mountain Club Glider Meridian Travel Cover pictured at an airport

The Sun Mountain Club Glider Meridian Travel Cover pictured at an airport

Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian Travel Cover

The superbly-innovative ClubGlider from Sun Mountain will be your best friend when on a golf trip, featuring an integrated leg set that retracts easily and supports all the weight of the bag for easy wheeling on all surfaces. Just like the name suggests, the four wheels simply glide around the airport and this takes away any stress from your back, arms and wrists for when maneuvering it. Additionally when we tested it we found the legs to be very sturdy, akin to many of the best Sun Mountain golf bags and the wheels roll excellently

The padding around the top of the bag is very thick and should mean that there are no accidents with your driver and fairway woods. The bag also comes with two spacious outside pockets, one on either side, that can easily house jackets, coats, jumpers or anything else you see fit to put in there for easy access. Inside the bag, there are two straps to keep your golf bag secured and there’s enough room for plenty more too. Overall we loved this model, it does cost a little bit more than some others on this list but it is well made, performs well, protects your clubs and makes travelling with clubs significantly easier which is a big plus.

Motocaddy Flightsafe Travel Cover resting on the floor of an airport departure lounge.

The Motocaddy Flightsafe Travel Cover resting on the floor of an airport departure lounge.

Motocaddy Flightsafe Travel Cover

A versatile travel bag that is perfect if you're looking for more protection for your golf clubs when traveling. Motocaddy are well known for producing some of the best electric golf trolleys and best golf cart bags on the market and their experience in the industry, using top class materials, makes them one of the most trusted brands around. When we tested this bag out, we were very impressed with the protection it offered our clubs. The durable and padded nylon materials made it very protective and we were enamored by the size of the bag. Motocaddy resisted the temptation to make it too big and cumbersome and it is just the right size for all your gear and a pretty chunky bag.

You'll also be able to fit a pair of the best golf shoes in there too and some clothing or apparel. One of the highlights of this bag was how easy it was to maneuver the bag around the airport thanks to the handy six-wheel design on the base of the bag. In addition, there are both internal and external straps that do a good job of holding your clubs tightly to the bag an addition that really put our mind at ease that our clubs wouldn't move around too much in the bag. There’s no doubt you’ll find more eye-catching flight bags on the market. However, this has a simple, understated but premium look that we liked and it did an excellent job of keeping our clubs well protected.

The BagBoy T-660 Travel Cover resting on the ground

The BagBoy T-660 Travel Cover resting on grass

BagBoy T-660 Travel Cover

The new Bag Boy T-660 features a wrap-around zipper that opens up the entire front of the travel cover. From there, you simply lay your golf bag in there and, unless it's oversized or severely overstuffed, we found it to be pretty easy to get in and out of the bag. What's more, when folded up and not in use, you can easily fit it into a small space behind the seat of your rental car when you're traveling, or put it in the corner of the trunk. The T-660 also weighs less than 6 pounds, so it's easy to maneuver when not in use and you can store it on a shelf at your house or in your garage without it taking up much space.

There were other elements we liked in testing - for example it also has reinforced corners, a skid plate, skid bars, and a large front pocket at the bottom for your shoes or outerwear. It also comes with high quality inline skate wheels for smooth rolling. Last but not least we think the price, given the solid performance, offers excellent value, and all of this makes it an ideal option for those golfers who go on trips via the airport. The lightness and strength of the bag ensures you can move it around easily, and yet won't get broken by the most heavy handed airline staff. We would say add a  colorful ribbon or something to a handle though, as it doesn't really stand out that much!

Sun Mountain Kube Travel Cover review

Sun Mountain Kube Travel Cover and its excellent luggage case

Sun Mountain Kube Travel Cover

We are big fans of the Kube. It's an excellent innovation that not only serves its main purpose of protecting your clubs well in transit, but also allows you to collapse it down to a neat size smaller than the average cabin bag (23 x 33 x 38) when not in use via its clever foldaway system. It has a robust hard-case shell with two external and internal straps to keep everything secure on the inside. We also like the reinforced padded area at the clubhead end for added protection.

The wheels glide well and the case is easy to move around thanks to the handle, not to mention it weighs just 3.08kg/6.6lbs as well. Right now there are several colors to choose from so if the orange and grey isn't for you, you can also get it in navy, green/black as well as a pink/graphite finish. Sun Mountain make many fantastic products, especially when it comes to bags which is why we created a best Sun Mountain golf bags guide too.

Ram Fx golf travel cover review

Ram Fx golf travel cover review resting on the floor of an airport.

Ram FX Golf Travel Cover

A well-thought-out and user-friendly golf travel cover, the Ram FX is made from a very sturdy ripstop fabric with extra padding across key areas where the golf clubs would be. A large main compartment houses golf clubs and features one main strap to hold your clubs down once they are packed.

Exterior pockets include one perfectly sized for a pair of the best golf shoes  and a similarly sized pocket we found useful for packing accessories like some of the best golf socks  and belts. Additionally it may seem like a small feature, but we really liked the blue accents on the outside of the bag because it made it very easy to spot when a deluge of golf travel bags get dropped off at the oversized baggage section in the airport. Overall with a lower RRP than some others on this list, this bag easily represents one of the best-value travel bags on the market, but you aren't compromising on that much performance.

Titleist Players Travel Cover Being wheeled into the airport

Titleist Players Travel Cover being wheeled into the airport

Titleist Players Travel Cover

Featuring two premium skate wheels and a large carry handle, the Titleist Players Travel Cover is very functional and a safe home for your clubs. Having tested it extensively, we were very impressed with the protection and quality it offered. Specifically we felt it dealt with the trials of travel extremely well, with the durable polyester fabric handling bumps, scrapes and such very well indeed.

The bag also comes with a handy strap on the inside that'll hold your clubs in place and it's worth pointing out  that there would be ample space inside this bag for one of the best golf cart bags . But that additional storage space was great for us, as we could place our golf shoes inside the bag along side our clubs, without worrying about our suitcase being overweight. The bag does have a premium feel, but what's more is that it also comes with two premium skate wheels which operate very nicely in and around airports to help you transport your bag without straining too much to carry it.

That is complimented by a very comfortable handle that is easy to grasp, hold and pull. One down side is that it comes in black only, which in fairness, is fitting for such a no-nonsense, high-quality product, yet may not appeal to those players looking to make a statement when they walk into the airport with their golf clubs.

ogio alpha travel cover and its very cool colorway

The Ogio Alpha Travel Cover finished in blue

Ogio Alpha Travel Cover Mid

The Ogio Alpha travel bag is a very roomy option that can store shoes, clothes, balls and still have space left over for a souvenir or two. With all of this equipment in it, we thought it might be overly cumbersome and heavy, but it was a fantastic lightweight option when lifting it into cars, or from an airport carousel.

That makes it a great cover for golfers looking to put as little strain on their backs as possible and it features two strong wheels that make this bag very easy to maneuver and pull behind you while you're out walking. It features a skid plate on the bottom which protects the bag from any abrasions but is also made of a durable material that is well padded around your club heads for additional protection and structure.

The D-shaped opening makes it easy to gain access to your clubs and the bag also features some handy compression straps which keep your clubs well secured inside the cover. The last thing to note is the eye-catching colors that the Ogio Alpha comes in. We tested out the Cover's 'Warp Speed' colorway and it was very easy to spot in the airport. But you can also get it in other colors like 'Terra Texture', 'Black', and 'Mid Haze'. In fact this color choice really differentiates it from the competition but you are guaranteed not to lose it in the airport or wherever you are.

Our  testing for golf gear  is built upon a comprehensive process combined with the knowledge and expertise of the Golf Monthly test team. Our team usually attend product launches and then when it comes to our actual testing, we test products over a period of time that we can gauge the performance. For travel bags we do our best to use them when travelling because doing this allows to gauge performance in scenarios that you might face as well. It should also be mentioned that manufacturers cannot pay for a good review and we make our conclusions from the testing and our experiences. This is because we strive to give the best reviews possible so you can get a greater understanding of the products themselves.

How to choose a golf travel bag

As your travel bag will help to protect your golf equipment, there are a variety of factors that you need to consider when looking to pick up a travel bag that's going to keep your clubs safe. So for that reason, we've outlined some key points that you're going to want to think about when you're purchasing your next travel cover.

1. Strength/durability/materials

Above all else, a travel bag has to protect your golf clubs properly as well as be able to put up with general wear and tear of travel. As a result, the bag should be made from strong, tear-resistant materials, and they should also have some features to protect the clubs on the inside of the bag too like compression straps on the inside and outside, along with foam padding around the top of the bag. The wheels should also be strong and move properly.

2. Maneuverability

Good models are also very easy to move around which means having wheels that slide well and can change direction properly. From a luggage perspective we would recommend four-wheels but with travel bags two-wheels work well because they can be laid on the ground easily.

Given you will be moving the bag around, weight is very important, especially if a model only has two wheels. Here a fine balance has to be made between lightness and strength because you don't want to compromise on either. Some of the best lightweight golf bags weight literally next to nothing when stored away in a very easy to carry travel bag, so make sure to think about that when purchasing your next cover.

4. Warranty

This is definitely a factor to consider if, god forbid, your clubs and golf gear are damaged or broken. We recommend checking with retailers and manufacturers themselves how long they offer on warranties. The longer the warranty the better!

Finally have a think about how much you want to spend on a golf travel bag. We think this is not an area to compromise on given they are designed to protect your golf clubs however we do think there are good models that don't have to cost an arm and a leg, as the above models show. For more advice on the best golf bags on the market, take a look at our guides to the best golf travel bags for under $100 , best golf pencil bags and best golf cart bags .

What should you be looking for in a travel bag?

Strength and durability is your starting point. A good travel bag has to be strong and durable to put up with the general wear and tear of travel. This means being made of strong, tear-resistant fabrics, and also having some features to protect the clubs on the inside of the bag too like compression straps on the inside and outside, along with foam padding around the top of the bag. The wheels should also be strong and move properly.

Is weight important for a travel bag?

Given you will be carrying the travel bag around, weight is very important, especially if a model only has two wheels. Here a fine balance has to be made between lightness and strength because you don't want to compromise on either.

Good models are very easy to move around which means having wheels that slide well and can change direction properly. There are several excellent models above with more than two wheels and these are usually the best in this factor, but some two-wheel options move well too, such as the Sun Mountain Kube.

Can I put other golf equipment in a travel bag?

Depending on the weight you're allotted for your transfer or flight, you can sometimes opt to put more equipment in your travel bag, as well as your clubs. You may opt to put your waterproof gear, golf shoes or even some golf clothing in your travel bag.

What kind of bag do pro golfers use?

From our research we have found the model that Tour players often use is from Club Glove and the official Large Pro model because it is big enough to house Tour golf bags which are the biggest in the game.

Do you need a travel bag to bring golf clubs on a plane?

You don't officially need a travel bag for golf clubs on a plan but it is highly recommended to make sure they are protected and aren't broken during travel.

Best Golf Travel Bags 2023

You’ve spent the time researching the perfect clubs. Now it’s time to protect them.

Few things are more exhilarating than touching down at the location of your dream golf trip. On the flipside, nothing is more excruciating than worrying if your clubs are going to make it safe and sound.

The best golf travel bags for 2023 will protect your clubs from the ups and downs, ebbs and flows, of airline travel. Without a proper golf travel bag, you could be forced to use a rental set when your unprotected clubs inevitably sustain fatal damage.

Sound like your worst nightmare? Don’t risk it. Here are the best golf travel bags for 2023.

Travel bag buying considerations.

It’s your money! You deserve to spend it on something that delivers on what it promises.

Cost vs Performance

Does “cost” equal “performance”? Not always. The best golf travel bags for 2023 hover in the $250-$350 price range. However, the best value travel bag of 2023 can be purchased for less than $50! The Amazon Basics Soft Sided travel bag is a steal of a deal at its current price.

Functionality

Do you need a travel bag that makes the airport experience seamless and smooth? What about protection and durability? Decide what you’re looking for in a golf travel bag before you buy. What’s important to you is what matters the most.

Shape & Size

Golf Travel Bags come in all different shapes and sizes. More compact bags are easier to store and move, but bigger bags generally offer more protection and more storage.

Golf Travel Bag Features That Matter

Maneuverability.

Airports are seldom easy to navigate, especially with the droves of people all seemingly searching for the same gate as you. A good golf travel bag should be easy to maneuver and steer through the crowds. The ClubGlider design of the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian provides excellent steering and a nearly hands-free experience. It practically rolls itself!

Another great option when looking for a bag that’s easy to roll and move is the VICE Shell . The Shell has four spinners and two luggage wheels, which give it a tighter turning radius.

Nothing will spoil your dream golf vacation faster than a broken club. A golf travel bag’s main function is to protect your clubs. Sadly, not all have the necessary padding or structure to keep your precious sticks safe. A well-constructed golf travel bag has adequate padding near the top where the clubheads rest. Ideally, this space would be snug to stop the clubs from moving around or bending.

The most protective golf travel bag for 2023 is the OGIO Alpha Max . The Alpha Max offers great padding and protection, thanks in large part to the internal pad that can be wrapped around your clubs for 360-degree coverage. Another solid option is the PING Rolling Travel Cover , which features a snug and secure fit.

golf travel bags on wheels

Like your typical luggage, a golf travel bag must be durable. You can’t afford for your golf travel bag to break, rip or tear after the first use. Your golf travel bag should withstand the test of time thanks to durable construction. Things like zippers, stitching and handles are the first to go because they get the most use. A durable bag reinforces these high-wear areas.

The most durable golf bag for 2023 is the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian . The PING Rolling Travel Cover is also durable enough to become a longtime travel companion.

  • Look for a golf travel bag that can fold up when not in use. Bags like the  Sun Mountain Kube  or  VICE Shell  are ultra-compact.
  • Fan of smaller Sunday-style golf bags?  Sunday Golf’s Mule travel bag   was specifically designed for the minimalist golfer. It’s still plenty durable and features good storage.
  • Pockets still matter. A good golf travel bag should have some extra storage space for the rest of your golf gear. This could save you some cash by eliminating an extra bag that you might bring otherwise.
  • Handles matter. Having well-placed handles can make a bag easier to move in and out of your car for quick pickup and drop-off at the airport.
  • Have a hard time with heavy gear? The  Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian  holds all of the weight for you. As opposed to two-wheeled travel bags, the four-wheeled ClubGlider system makes the bag feel almost weightless.
  • Looking for extra support? The  Stitch MUT  and  Titleist Professional Large Club Glove Travel Cover  come with a torsion bar that acts a spine for your clubs to prevent them from bending or breaking.
  • Some golf travel bags are multi-functional. The   Stitch MUT (Multiuse Traveler Bag)  converts into a carry-on-sized luggage bag to hold your clothes when not carrying your golf bag.

Best Golf Travel Bag 2023 FAQ

If you want your clubs to make it to your final destination in one piece, we recommend a golf travel bag. You can’t go wrong with the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian or PING Rolling Travel Bag .

The key to packing your golf clubs for travel is to pack them tightly. Ideally you should use any included straps to hold your clubs in place, too. Most have exterior and interior strap to keep your clubs secure.

A “stiff arm” (sometimes called a torsion bar) is a great way to protect your longer clubs from harm. As mentioned, both the Stitch MUT and Titleist Professional Large Club Glove Travel Cover come standard with a stiff arm.

If you play an adjustable driver, it’s never a bad idea to remove your driver head for travel. If you choose to do so, wrap it carefully and place it in your carry-on so you can keep an eye on it!

Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian Golf Travel Bag

The Bottom Line

PROFESSIONAL INSIGHTS

The Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian was made with the frequent traveler in mind. The ClubGlider system makes moving through the airport a breeze. No other bag in our test was easier to maneuver and move than the ClubGlider Meridian. While the bag itself isn’t nearly as compact as other bags, the bag is so easy to load, unload, and move that you forget how large it is.

The padding near the top of the bag is among the most dense that we saw in our testing, too, which means your precious sticks will be protected no matter what.

Nothing is easier to travel with than the ClubGlider Meridian. The four-wheel ClubGlider System has been around for years, and it’s easy to see why Sun Mountain sticks with it.

I purchased my first, and only, Club Glove Last Bag back in 1997. I would bet that it’s logged well over a half a million air miles and while it may look every bit of 26 years old, it still gets the job done. It is without a doubt the smartest/best golf purchase I’ve ever made and it’s not even close!

Yesterday’s email started with: “I won’t even bother looking for a polite way to put it. Traveling with a golf bag SUUUCKS‼️ Dragging a huge bag through the airport is no fun and that’s before we talk about the ever-present risk of baggage handlers making some unauthorized adjustments to your clubs. It’s almost not worth the hassle.”

This is completely wrong. Travelling with clubs is wonderful, it means you are going golfing or have been golfing, usually someplace nicer than home. It makes travelling by air bearable and you can feel smug about all the others who dont have clubs. You really only have your clubs for a few minutes before they are dropped off so its really not bad.

That said, I have the large Club glove last bag plus a stiff arm. The quality wheels make maneouvering manageable and the quality and protection of the bag has been outstanding. Being a soft bag means that it doesnt damage my vehicle on the trip to the airport. The bag folds down into inself so it is the size of a medium suitcase when empty. Last bag also has different colored stripes so finding my bag amongst the sea of all black bags when I go to places like Phoenix is easier.

Bought the SUN MOUNTAIN Glider off the back of last year’s review… and it is worth every penny. Highly recommend.

Brian Shuman DMD

The SUN MOUNTAIN is truly amazing. I can maneuver it with MY PINKY FINGER! Even my wife who knows nothing about golf loves this travel bag. Sorry to all the other competition but the Sun Mountain really is a no brainer.

Have used the Club Glove XL with stiff arm for years–plenty of room for extra shoes, clothes, balls with my Titleist Player 4 size carry bag. Key of course is the trick of removing heads from driver and fairway metals storing the shafts grips upward during travel. I now toss an Apple Tag into my bag so it can always be located. I would rather take a little extra time to physically retrieve my bag at luggage and have clubs ready immediately if desired. Unfortunately I have heard some horror stories of clubs being lost or misplaced or misdirected or even arrive late at the receiving end by friends using Shipstix.

Richard Senker

I’ve gone through 2 Club Gove bags over the years. I recently bought the Amazon Basics travel bag for $60. I’m shocked at how good it is! I have a hard time thinking of anything bad to say about it.

I had a club glove bag for years, but it was taking a toll on my shoulders and back, lifting it every couple minutes while waiting in airport lines — especially when I was often bringing a surfboard with me. The club glove was a solid and protective piece of travel equipment, but it was awkward. When the club glider came out, I knew it was the answer, and promptly purchased it. My friend needed a decent travel bag so I gave her my Club Glove. Though traveling with clubs is generally a hassle, the club glider makes traveling with clubs so much more reasonable. I was at a Golf Galaxy a couple years ago and a woman was trying to decide on a travel bag for a trip to Scotland and Ireland with her friends. The salesman (a friend of mine) was giving her a lot of input, when he saw me and said, here’s someone who travels a lot with his clubs — any suggestions? Without hesitation I directed her to the Club Glider and told her not to even think twice about it. She happened to approach me about a year later at the local driving range (I didn’t recognize her) and reminded me that she had bought the club glider, that it worked perfectly and all her friends were envious. Like some others here, I don’t particularly trust the baggage handlers to care for my gear as much as I do, so I pull all the heads off my woods and store them safely in the bag, and use one of the Stiff Arms to protect my shafts and irons. Fortunately, I’ve had very good luck with no breakages and that’s after

Jon Konkler

We have used a pair of Tourtrek golf bags for about 5 years. Ours have hard shell tops and padded bodies. The clubs/golfbag strap in nicely and up till now we have not had any damaged clubs. We average 2 crosscountry trips a year with them. They have 2 wheels and roll pretty easily, but all of them are bulky. my biggest complaint if for TSA. many times after inspection they don’t strap the clubs/golfbag back in the travel cover. My other complaint is for the baggage handlers. They tend to tug on the zipper tabs instead of the handles that are supposed to be used. That being said, ours bags are stil in good shape.

I received a top-notch travel bag in 2008 as an anniversary gift for my job. As fate would have it, all my golf trips / excursions since then have been by a car so I haven’t used it! The one time I did fly, the family went to Disney area & I stayed at a Marriott Vacation Club resort that had a fantastic course & practice facility. I ended up rented virtually brand new TaylorMade clubs for $69 for the week (this included unlimited range balls & range time). Not a bad deal! For me, playing while keeping an eye on my very small children, scoring wasn’t exactly my top priority. So not having my own clubs wasn’t a big deal.

I bought the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Pro back in 2017 for a trip to the UK and Europe. It is awesome. I even piled our carry-ons and backpack on top of it and connected them with velcro straps to hold them and wheel them around the airports. I use a BagBoy Backbone inside it and take all the heads off woods and drivers. I wrap the tops of the clubs in golf towels and I haven’t had anything broken yet. In Vegas, in 2019 I had a room that was about a ten-minute walk to the car in the parking lot so every day I’d just put my clubs in the Clubglider and wheel them to the car. I can’t say enough good things about this travel bag.

I purchased the SunMountain bag last year after MGS’ recommendation came out and travel a good deal with my clubs both domestically and internationally. The bag is incredible. Absolutely crushes it – every time I’m going through an airport another golfer (who is lugging his/her bag) stops me and says, “WHAT is that??”

My biggest concern was the wheel base and how reliable that would be, but it’s rock solid. Very highly recommended!

I’ve had a Club Glove travel bag for over 30 plus years. I can’t remember how many times I’ve taken it on US domestic trips as well as to Europe and Asia. The only issue I had with it was the roller wheels disintegrating due to age. It was an easy fix as they are standard roller blade wheels that I purchased on eBay. All the zippers work great. There is a few spaces on the cover that show some abrasion marks, but it doesn’t impact the function of the travel bag. So when you say the bag is “very durable” you are not kidding!

Here for the data

New website design seems to have come with a loss of MGS substance. Where’s the table showing how each bag performs in each “test” category? Or the other table showing features and specifications? Or the description of how rankings were determined. For me, these were the items that made MGS trustworthy and allowed individuals to decide what compromises the were willing to make as part of their buying decision.

Click the View Full Rankings Button and you will get the tables. My favorite part of the articles also

This was posted 2 weeks ago and the article came out today. It’s almost like someone posted a comment, they pulled the article, and came back 2 weeks later with the content we know and love. Thanks for the guidance :)

Also very curious, no Club Glove mentioned anywhere. Is there a reason for that omission?

Connor Lindeman

One of the bags we tested from Titleist was the Club Glove Large travel bag!

Acushnet purchased Club Glove late last year.

Some airlines, including United, have a policy where they will only insure your clubs if using a hard-sided bag

I’ve had a BagBoy higher end travel (the exact model escapes me) bag since early 2000’s and it’s not showing much wear at all. It’s average 1-2 cross country flights per year.

Best Golf Travel Bags 2024

Travel Bags Main

Travel Bags Main

If you’re flying with golf clubs, a good golf travel bag is a critical piece of equipment to protect your clubs and make them easy to transport on your next golf break.

Travelling with your beloved (and expensive) golf clubs is not without risk. There is always a small chance golf equipment can be lost or damaged by air travel companies, especially if they don’t have the correct labelling and protection.

A well-made golf travel bag can ease those fears a great deal and the likes of TaylorMade, Callaway, J Lindeberg, Puma and Benross are just some of the big brands who make excellent options.

A good measure of the strength of a material is the denier rating (D). Anything above 1,000 puts it in the elite level when it comes to toughness, making it ideal for protecting your precious gear. And the beauty of a golf travel bag is that they’re large enough for you to fit plenty of clothes, shoes and accessories in, too.

Of course, if you’re in the market for a golf travel bag then you’re probably in the market for a golf break, and we can help with that, too. Head over to our  Golf World Top 100 homepage  to find our rankings of the best golf resorts in  Great Britain and Ireland ,  Continental Europe  and the  World . When traveling with golf clubs, you want it to be as easy and convenient as possible, and you want a good travel golf bag to offer maximum protection for your clubs. There are a few other factors that are also important. Let’s look closely at selecting the best golf bag for travel.

Some cases are made from a tough solid material, while others are made from a durable fabric and they generally contain padding to protect the clubs. Both options have pros and cons, and much will depend on your travel requirements and personal preference.

Soft cases are lighter, easier to store when not in use, and generally a bit less expensive. Because they are lighter and more compact, they are often easier to maneuver as you travel.

A hard golf club travel case is generally bulkier and often a bit more expensive, but they tend to offer much better protection

The weight of the travel bag is important for several reasons. Firstly, you will be lugging it around yourself at airports and in and out of cars during your travels. But more importantly, you will have to pay for excess luggage weight on your flights.

If you travel with a bag that is too heavy, you may incur weight penalties, thereby reducing the amount you can spend. You need to weigh up the benefit of the potential extra protection a heavier bag can offer versus the costs involved. Soft bags tend to weigh between 8 and 10 pounds, while hard case golf travel bags are roughly 12 to 20 pounds.

Remember that your clubs alone already weigh a fair amount, generally around 30 pounds. A heavy bag will add to this weight. It is a clever idea to check the weight limits and costs with the airline before traveling with your golf equipment.

The  PGA  offers some good advice on traveling with golf clubs.

The main purpose of golf bags for travel is to protect your clubs. Ensure the bag has sufficient padding to protect your investment. The very nature of travel puts them at risk, and unfortunately, a few baggage handlers are not too careful with the process. The more padding the better, although it adds bulk and weight to the bag.

A good strapping system is also important as this will secure your equipment in the golf bag for travel and ensure it does not bounce around inside.

Durability is important for the protection and the lifespan of the travel bag. Look at the quality of the materials used, including the handles and zippers. Ensure that you invest in a bag that will offer good protection and last for many excursions.

A good sign that a bag has decent durability is the warranty. It demonstrates that the manufacturer believes in the workmanship and materials used in making the golf bag for travel. Some companies are better at looking after their customers than others, so look into the warranty.

One obviously has to consider the budget when investing in golf equipment. We have covered bags for travel that will cater to a wide range of budgets. Consider the value of your clubs and the potential inconvenience and disappointment of club damage when you arrive at your destination.

A less expensive bag could save you some money in the short term but expose your clubs to greater risk, and the bag itself might need replacing sooner than you expect.

First and foremost, the bag you select for travel needs to accommodate the golf bag you intend to travel with and the length of your longest club. While most of them will suffice, the more compact options might not cater to certain equipment. Check first to be sure.

Secondly, you might need additional storage for shoes and other gear when traveling.  Many bags, particularly soft ones, have additional external pockets that allow for this.

The type of material used will determine the durability of the bag and the protection it provides. Soft bags are typically made from polyester or nylon. The thicker fabrics tend to offer more protection.

Hardshell golf travel cases are generally made from high-impact plastic or a composite substance. Some are stronger and more resilient than others.

The best travel golf bags have wheels because apart from good protection, you want a bag that is easy to handle and has good mobility. This will make your travels easier and reduce frustration. The design and quality of the wheels are important. In general, although a bit heavier, hardshell cases are easier to move if they have decent wheels.

There are, however, many soft cases that are well designed for easy mobility. Soft bags are less bulky and easier to store when not in use.

A wide base tends to make movement easier, as do larger wheels. Note that not all golf bags for travel have wheels.  Some will need carrying, or alternatively, you can put them onto a trolley to move them.

Straps and handles are also important when picking the bag up to move it around. Ideally, you want a top handle, middle handles, and a decent strap.

Most golf travel bags do not offer water resistance, although some are more effective than others. If this is important to you, look into this when making your selection. Hard travel cases for golf clubs tend to be better in this regard.

Some golf bags for travel will come with locks, while others do not, so you must purchase these separately. Factor this in when comparing options.

It is made with a durable fabric with reinforced stress points, smooth-rolling inline skate wheels, and extra protection around the curb rails. Furthermore, it features two compression-style straps on the outside of the bag to help keep your clubs securely fastened.

This is the least expensive option we have looked at, and a little lacking in our eyes, but it may still be worth your consideration.

The latches (patent pending) are industrial strength, and the bag has a TSA locking system. Furthermore, the bag is moisture, dust, and dirt resistant. What’s more, the bag is very easy to maneuver. It features two inline skate wheels and four multi-directional spinner wheels. This pairs with two handles: one at the top and another at the side. So you can choose to either push or pull the bag depending on your preference.

Another benefit is that the bag is exceptionally lightweight for a golf club hard case. This is due to its ABS plastic build. It comes in at just 5lbs making it the second lightest bag on this list, placing behind the Himal Soft-Sided golf travel bag which is 4.4lbs.

And to really drive this bag home, it comes with an outstanding 5 years of warranty. This beats out almost all other bags and demonstrates the reliability of Samsonite products.

OutdoorMaster Padded Golf Club Travel Bag with Wheels, 900D Heavy Duty Oxford Waterproof -Alligators - Black + Gray

If you’re on a tight budget, the OutdoorMaster golf bag could be a good option. It’s well-padded and has a four-layer design, including a premium 900D Oxford fabric layer and a waterproof coating layer. This means it feels great and keeps your precious golf gear dry.

You have a few different options for how you want to carry it. You can wheel it along using the 2x inline skate wheels and the top handle, carry it like a duffel bag using the two middle handles, or you can sling it over your shoulder and carrying it on your back using the long strap on the back.

A few neat features for this bag that quite a few don’t have is the dedicated card pocket and shoe compartment. This helps to keep you organized and means you don’t have to lug around another bag for this necessary gear.

If you’re shopping for a travel golf bag this year, there are a few specific considerations for 2024 going into 2024. Specifically, you’ll want to watch out for baggage fees. After the pandemic, airlines looked for any way possible to increase their profits. Baggage fees were an easy one.

So check out weight and size restrictions before you buy your golf bag. You shouldn’t have a problem checking your clubs, but you’ll want to avoid any surcharges.

Note also that golf vacations are super popular. We’re not the only ones who like to hit the links on our days off. A bunch of new players emerged during lockdown, and you’ll want to book early.

When you’re looking up restrictions weight and size for your travel golf bag, you can also check storage policies at your destination course. You may be able to keep your clubs at the course while you stay at a nearby resort.

Golf Travel Bag FAQs

This will probably be the first decision that faces you when you start looking for a travel case, and they both have their pros and cons depending on your golf travel needs.

These will be the more expensive of the two and are usually made of hard plastic. They offer the highest level of protection for your clubs, and from an insurance point of view, many airlines will only cover damage caused to your clubs when they are inside a hard case.

The downside to a hard case is that they are heavier, generally larger, and less flexible than the soft style case, which may cause problems when loading them into your car.

Hard cases generally only have one main storage compartment and no extra pockets. This means you have to find room for things like your golf shoes in your luggage.

A softer golf travel bag, usually made of cloth, will be far lighter and generally easier to transport back and forth to the airport. Another advantage of the soft case is that they will often come with two or three extra pockets on the outside for you to store things like your golf shoes, balls, and other accessories.

Because the soft cases are lighter, there is more chance of you staying within the weight limit set by the airline. The one thing you don’t want to be doing is paying extra for an overweight case.

The downside to a soft case is the lack of protection it offers compared to a hard case which means the likelihood of any damage occurring is far greater.

Make sure you always check with your airline before you fly, so you know their policies and weight limits concerning the transportation of golf clubs. This will ensure that you don’t get any unwelcome surprises once you arrive at the check-in desk.

Hybrid Case

There is a style of case that blends the benefits of both a hard and soft design. It has a hard protective top for your club heads, and the bottom is made of a softer material that keeps the overall weight down and makes it easier to carry or fold away when you are not using it.

Most bags come with two inline skate wheels, although the better option is to have spinner wheels that allow you to steer the bag in any direction. The wheel system on a travel golf cart assists with the maneuverability of the bag, especially in confined spaces.

In our opinion, the best golf travel bag for airlines is the CaddyDaddy Constrictor 2. The reason we prefer this over the rest is that it has all the features we want in a bag and is very reasonably priced. This means you have more money to spend on other equipment like golf clubs .

To keep your clubs well-protected when flying, you need to prevent them from rattling around in your bag. The easiest way to do this is to wrap towels or clothes around the head of your clubs.

Assuming your golf bag and clubs weigh around 12kg, you still have at least 8kg to play with within weight allowances to fly. Therefore it is a great idea to pack clothes into your golf travel bag.

Airlines do not have strict rules regarding golf tees. You can store them in your carry-on bags or your checked luggage.

As golf clubs can classify as deadly weapons, they are not eligible for carry-on bags. You must instead store them in your checked luggage.

Weight is very important. Usually, you are restricted to 23kg. And if you go over this limit, you’ll have to pay an excess luggage charge, so make sure you weigh your travel bag before going to the airport to check you are within the limit.

Oversized luggage are bags that do not fit within the thresholds of what airlines allow. As each airline has its own thresholds, some bags may be considered oversized with one airline and not with another. Generally speaking, these thresholds are around 62-126 linear inches.

The smallest golf travel bags can hold 7 to 10 clubs and a few accessories. Many weigh under 1 lb. They are often used for trips to the driving range. Be aware that some smaller golf travel bags may be too short to cater to your driver, especially if you max the shaft out at 48 inches.

Here is our favorite small golf travel bag .

To make traveling with your golf clubs as hassle-free and safe as possible, we have a few tips for you:

  • With many modern drivers and  fairway woods , you can remove the club-head. We advise doing this and storing them separately for added protection.
  • Where possible, wrap some towels or socks around the clubs in your bag to stop them banging about (If you have iron covers, you could also use these).
  • Placing your irons upside down in your golf bag may also help protect the clubs while transporting them.
  • Ensure you photograph the contents of your golf bag before placing it into the travel bag in case you need it for insurance purposes should anything get lost or damaged.
  • If you find your golf bag is a little too loose inside of the case, you can always place some of your clothes inside to help pad it out a little. Your golf clothes shouldn’t add too much weight and act as an extra layer of protection.
  • Keep all of your expensive accessories, such as GPS units, with you in your hand luggage. Don’t place them in your travel case.
  • And finally, make sure that you have adequate travel insurance that covers your golf clubs should anything get lost or damaged while in transit.

Final Thoughts

Clubs are a fair investment, and if you intend to travel with them, it is worth spending a bit more to get the best golf travel bag to protect them on your journey. We have given you some tips on what to look for when evaluating the available options, and some specifics on five of the leading options on the market at the moment.

While they are all great, the CaddyDaddy Golf Constrictor 2 Travel cover stood out for us as the absolute best of the best. It ticks all the right boxes and has everything you want in a golf travel bag.

This popular model is durable and has plenty of protective padding and a secure internal strap. The materials used are of decent quality, as is the workmanship, and the bag is of great value for money. It is also spacious, has plenty of storage, and the warranty and after-sales support are good.

Building in flames

At least 115 killed and scores wounded in Moscow concert hall attack

Islamic State claims responsibility after gunmen in combat gear opened fire and reportedly set off explosives at Crocus City Hall

  • Moscow attack – latest updates
  • Moscow concert hall attack: what we know so far

At least 115 people have been killed and 145 wounded in Russia’s worst terror attack in years, as gunmen in combat fatigues opened fire and detonated explosives in a major concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow.

Russian media say authorities have detained 11 people.

Three children were among the dead, Ria cited the regional healthcare ministry as saying on Saturday. Authorities had earlier said five children were among the victims and that about 60 people were in serious condition.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack late on Friday, in a post on Telegram in which the group claimed its gunmen had managed to escape afterwards. A US official said Washington had intelligence confirming Islamic State’s claim.

Photos showed Crocus City Hall engulfed in flames as videos emerged showing at least four gunmen opening fire with automatic weapons as panicked Russians fled for their lives.

In one clip, three men in fatigues carrying rifles fired at point-blank range into bodies strewn about the lobby of the concert hall.

The assailants also apparently detonated explosives during the attack. At least two blasts took place at the concert hall on Friday evening, news agencies reported.

Video still showing chaotic scenes at the concern hall

Video published online showed horrific scenes of some people begging for help from the roof of the concert hall as it burned behind them. Other video footage showed people screaming, crawling on their hands and knees out of the music venue or fleeing down stairwells.

One witness said he was about to settle into his seat when he heard “several machine gun bursts” and “a lot of screams”.

“I realised right away that it was automatic gunfire and understood that most likely it’s the worst: a terrorist attack,” the man, who gave his name as Alexei, told Agence-France Presse.

Another concertgoer described scenes of panic as terrified people tried to escape. “A stampede began. Everyone ran to the escalator,” he told Reuters. “Everyone was screaming; everyone was running.”

At least three emergency helicopters had been deployed to extinguish the fire. There had been a partial collapse of the roof of the Crocus City Mall, local media reported. Shortly after midnight, the emergencies ministry said the fire had been contained.

A witness told the Mash Telegram channel that there were “at least five” attackers and that they were “bearded”.

“They act like trained fighters,” the account read. “At the moment of entering the building, the guards and people standing at the door were killed. Then they blocked the main entrance.

“The terrorists are armed with [Kalashnikov] assault rifles. Some carried vests with various ammunition. At least two of the attackers are carrying backpacks, possibly with molotov cocktails.”

In his first comments on the shooting, President Vladimir Putin wished all those injured in the terrorist attack a speedy recovery. The Kremlin said he was being updated by security chiefs about the situation, including from Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Russian investigators published pictures of a Kalashnikov automatic weapon, vests with multiple spare magazines and bags of spent bullet casings. A grainy picture was published by some Russian media of two of the alleged attackers in a white car. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the Moscow government would cancel all cultural, sporting and other mass events for the weekend after the attack, as Russian railways and other major utilities said they were increasing security.

Sobyanin called the attack a “great tragedy”. At least 70 ambulances had been dispatched to the site.

Earlier this month, western countries led by the US had issued terror warnings and told their citizens not to join public gatherings in Russia.

On 8 March, the embassy wrote it was “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and US citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours”.

Islamic State said late on Friday its fighters had attacked on the outskirts of Moscow, “killing and wounding hundreds and causing great destruction to the place before they withdrew to their bases safely.” The statement gave no further detail.

The US had intelligence confirming Islamic State’s claim of responsibility for the shooting, a US official said, adding that Washington had warned Moscow in recent weeks of the possibility of an attack.

“We did warn the Russians appropriately,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, without providing any additional details.

Russian media reports said riot police units were sent to the area as people were being evacuated and Speznaz units of the Russian national guard began storming the building later on Friday evening.

The shootings at the concert hall were reminiscent of some of Europe’s worst terrorist incidents such as the attack on the Bataclan in Paris in November 2015. Russians are likely to recall the Nord Ost terrorist attack in Moscow in 2002, when gunmen took hostages at a theatre, ultimately leading to the deaths of 40 hostage takers and 132 hostages.

The Moscow attack was the deadliest attack in Russia since the 2004 Beslan school siege , in which 334 people, including 186 children, were killed after being held captive by militants for two days.

Vehicles of Russian emergency services are parked near the burning Crocus City Hall concert venue

The British embassy in Moscow condemned Friday’s attack. “We condemn the terrorist attack at the Moscow region’s Crocus City Hall. It’s a horrible tragedy. We offer sincere condolences to the relatives and loved ones of those hurt and killed in today’s events,” the embassy said in a statement on its Telegram channel.

The UN security council condemned what it called a “heinous and cowardly terrorist attack”.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said the “images of the attack were just horrible and just hard to watch”. The White House had no indication that Ukraine was involved in the attack, Kirby added. Russia is fighting a major war in Ukraine.

Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in February in a Russian penal colony, described the attack as a “nightmare”, adding in a post on X: “Condolences to the families of the victims and recovery to the injured. All those involved in this crime must be found and held accountable.”

A top Ukrainian official said the country had no involvement in the attack.

“Ukraine certainly has nothing to do with the shooting/explosions in the Crocus City Hall,” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidential administration, wrote on X.

“It makes no sense whatsoever. Ukraine has never resorted to the use of terrorist methods.”

Dmitry Medvedev, the ex-president of Russia and now deputy chairman of its security council, wrote that “if it is established that they are terrorists of the Kyiv regime, it’s impossible to treat them and those who inspired them differently.

“They all should be found and relentlessly destroyed as terrorists. Including officials of the state that committed such an evil thing. Death for death.”

There was no evidence that Ukraine had any involvement in the attacks.

The attack took place at a sold-out concert by the Russian Soviet-era rock band Piknik. Crocus City Hall, capacity 6,200, is one of the largest and most popular music venues in the Moscow oblast.

The warnings from the western embassies came shortly after Russia said it had foiled a planned shooting by an Afghan group linked to Islamic State.

The FSB said it had foiled an attack on a Moscow synagogue by Islamic State’s affiliate in Afghanistan, known as Isis-Khorasan or Isis-K, and seeks a caliphate across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran.

Putin changed the course of the Syrian civil war by intervening in 2015, supporting President Bashar al-Assad against the opposition and Islamic State.

Russian authorities had also recently carried out raids against armed Islamist militants in the region of Ingushetia, leading to firefights between police and the fighters. Putin had called the March warnings from western embassies a “provocation”.

“All this resembles outright blackmail and the intention to intimidate and destabilise our society,” he said earlier this month.

Russia has not faced a large terrorist attack on its own territory since 2017, when 14 people were killed in a blast on the St Petersburg metro .

Suicide bombers killed 34 people in Volgograd in 2013 shortly before the Sochi Olympics. And in 2011, suicide bombers killed 30 people at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport.
