Hi, did you visit Japan during Spring? We're planning to visit on mid of February 2019 but I want to see cherry blossoms so bad. Are you aware if I will be able to see some or should I just forget my dream?

hi, just want to ask, if i will be roaming around the city of tokyo (just the inner city) following your itineraries for the inner city, is the 3 day-unlimited subway pass worth it? i dont plan to go to the neighboring cities. just around tokyo. usually tsukiji, ueno, asakusa, shinjuku odaiba and roponggi are the places i want to to go during my 4-day stay. im torn between sticking to the ICOCA card(coz i'll be coming from osaka) and TOKYO Subway pass. or should i only stick to the ICOCA card? appreciate your advise :-)

very informative. thanks this is very useful. planning to visit japan in oct. !!!

thanks for this tips. i love it!

Question lang, bakit kahit may Tokyo Subway Pass ka, nagbabayad ka pa rin sa ibang routes? Hindi ba kasama yun sa Tokyo Metro Pass?

Hi, planning a trip to japan and crossing s.korea trip then of course back phils. Have you been tried this travel scheme?

Love the content! Big thanks to this! Keep it up!

Hi Mervz, Thank you for sharing this, our trip to tokyo is next week na! Weeeh! -sherwin (qbe)

Hi! I need someone to talk to directly on msgr. regarding this DIY trip to Tokyo. Hope you colud help me. Big thanks in advance!

Hi! Did you already book your accommodation here in PH or, when you are already in japan?

Mahirap na maghanap nag hostel na tag P1,000 ngayon. Even capsule hotels, parang nasa P1,500/night. Also, if you arrive in Japan at 11:35am, most likely, your return flight leaves at around 12:30pm. So sa 3rd day, wala kana magagawa since you need to be at the airport 2 hours before flight, then travel time pa.

Japan Trip Budget Philippines (With Sample 9 Days Itinerary)

Here’s your ultimate Japan trip budget if you’re traveling from the Philippines. Are you looking for a Japan travel guide for beginners? We share our Japan travel tips with a sample itinerary (complete with most of the popular spots in Japan) on this page.

We had a 9-day journey in Japan, exploring the famous parts and tourist attractions in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone, and Mt. Fuji. We will share some helpful info about our trip and some travel budget tips you can follow to travel efficiently and conveniently as a beginner.

We went for the Sakura Season (Cherry Blossom) on this trip. You can also visit Shibuya Station, Tokyo Tower, Disneyland, Ueno Park, Roppongi Hills, Mori Tower, Universal Studios in Osaka with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Dotonbori, Bamboo Forest, and all the famous tourist spots listed in the itinerary below.

Table of Contents:

Why should you visit Japan?

You cannot miss visiting Japan because it has everything you would be looking for in a place to travel – the food, the culture, the people, and the experience. The food is to die for. Visiting Japan will let you experience their heritage and its kindest people. You’ll be in a completely different world from the past and the future because Japan has it all.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

The best time to visit Japan is every new season . They say that after you go to Japan, you’ll definitely come back again because every season has a lot to offer. Every traveler cannot miss experiencing the particular season of each tourist attraction, whether winter in Hokkaido or Autumn in Kyoto.

The weather in Japan is chilly from December to February as it is the winter season. Spring starts from March until April when the famous Sakura Season ( Cherry Blossom ) also occurs. Summer begins in June until August. Autumn starts in September to November.

How to travel Japan from the Philippines?

The most common route to travel to Japan from the Philippines is by taking a flight from Manila Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport or Manila to Kansai Airport if you want to start your journey at Osaka, Japan. It takes four hours and thirty minutes to reach Japan from the Philippines by airplane.

How to travel Japan with the most affordable budget?

To book the cheapest flights, you can find an airline promo at airlinepromo.net and search for your desired dates. That website will give you the most reasonable flight comparison.

We recommend booking as early as three months before your flight departure to avail the cheapest airfare. That’s one of the best tips we have learned before traveling to any destination.

You can start your vacation in Japan in either Tokyo or Osaka; therefore, you can book for Tokyo (Narita Airport) or Osaka (Kansai Airport). Those are always the flights with the cheapest airfare compared to other airports and routes.

Consider the weather before your travel to know what clothes you will need to pack.

Do you need a JR Pass to travel to Japan?

Yes, if you stay for seven days or more and want to explore many tourist spots conveniently. This ticket will give you unlimited travel. JR Pass already includes train, bus, and ferry. The train is the fastest and cheapest mode of transportation in Japan.

japan jr pass

We also recommend air travel from Tokyo to Osaka or some other farther parts of Japan to save time and money. Bullet train (Shinkansen) is costly in that case, but if you’re really exploring more Japanese prefectures, buying a JR Pass (Japan Rail Pass) is recommended for you.

What are the benefits of using a JR Pass in Japan?

Japan Rail Pass can be used on trains, buses, and ferries across the entire part of Japan. It can also be used on all shinkansen trains (bullet trains) except Nozomi and Mizuho trains and covers all the fees involved.

JR Pass can be used for 7, 14, or 21 days. The price for 7-day usage starts at $279. JR Pass is beneficial if you explore Japan in a week or more.

Japan Travel Guide for Beginners and First-time Travelers

Our adventures in Japan started in Tokyo. Besides the photos here, you can also watch the videos I made to sum up my recent travel to Japan.

We went in the first week of April, the weather was still cold, and it was raining every other day.

The weather in Japan every April has both sunny and rainy days. I recommend visiting Shibuya Station, Ginza, and Dotonbori at night for the amazing lights and sights. Fantastic to take photos.

You can use the itinerary below as your Japan travel guide. It’s straightforward to find Japan’s famous places and tourist spots as every train station will connect you to them.

Besides, every train station in Japan has a kind and approachable staff. You can ask them in English any question about the place or route you are going.

Do not miss experiencing the Onsen (Japanese hot spring) .  Some 5-star hotels offer free Onsen for every accommodation.

onsen in japan

We checked in at Merveille Club in Hakone on the way to our Mt. Fuji tour. Unfortunately, the weather in Mt. Fuji did not let us see the iconic volcano. We will try some of their hot springs on our next travel to Japan.

How to find cheap Japan travel package?

Some travel packages are available for Japan tours, but we find them expensive, so we just made a Do-It-Yourself trip. We saved around $1,000 for our 9-day Japan travel.

I don’t use Airbnb these days because prices go up even when I clear out my browser’s cookies and cache. I like cheap deals from Booking.com for all my hotel accommodations these days. For my flights, of course, airlinepromo.net saves the day.

If you’re not traveling alone, you can save a lot of money on your food expenses since typical restaurants offer big servings and unlimited rice.

Big servings of food for one person can be enjoyed by two. People in Japan are very generous. Just a reminder, though, you can’t take out remaining foods from restaurants in Japan when you dine inside the resto.

Japan Trip Budget Philippines (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone)

This budget travel to Japan includes a full-suite tour exploring the most famous spots in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hakone. It means that you will be able to see and experience scenic destinations and attractions even if you are a beginner or first-time traveler in Japan. The breakdown of our expenses for our Japan travel budget from the Philippines is listed below:

  • Flight ticket (roundtrip) Manila to Tokyo Narita Airport – Php27,600
  • Hotel Accommodations (for two adults) – Php17,850
  • JR Pass – Php14,500
  • Tokyo Disneyland Ticket – Php3120
  • Universal Studios Japan Ticket – Php3,320
  • Flight Tokyo to Osaka – Php5,955

The expenses above don’t include pocket money which depends upon a person. Set aside enough pocket money that you will consume for your food cravings, meals, and necessary shopping.

How to Travel from Philippines to Japan as a Tourist

Great news for those who want to visit Japan – the country has been gradually reopening from June 2022 and will be fully open starting October 11th 2022! And while there are still regulations as to who can travel to Japan and what they can do while there, the rules are much more lax than they were when the pandemic began.

Japan is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. It’s known for its beautiful landscapes, delicious food and friendly people. However, if you’re planning to visit Japan from the Philippines, you must understand the measures in place to ensure your safety while there. Here’s what you need to know:

Table of Contents

Visit Japan from the Philippines: What You Need to Know

Who is currently allowed to travel to Japan?

Travelers from over 90 low-risk countries can enter Japan for group tours or independent travel starting on October 11, 2022. For passport holders from other countries, such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, they can travel without a visa in advance without having to get one starting on October 11.

The Japanese government has categorized all countries into three categories based on their COVID safety levels: red, yellow, and blue. The low-risk countries, which include Australia, Canada, the US, and Britain, are labeled as blue. These individuals do not need to self-isolate upon entering Japan, and triple-vaccinated individuals do not need to get tested prior to their departure.

What is required to travel to Japan, and what about visas?

In October 2022, a visa will no longer be required for tourists from most countries to visit Japan. Instead of applying for a visa at an embassy or consulate, foreign visitors need only:

  • Have stayed in a Group Blue country for 14 days prior to arrival.
  • Optional but recommended : To make your arrival at the airport smoother, download and use the Mysos app. This way you can upload documentation of things such as a negative COVID test and vaccination certificates before you even get to Japan.
  • You must upload the relevant documents to MySoS at least 6 hours before your flight’s departure.
  • To ensure that your reservation is successful, it’s best to pre-register at least two (2) or more days before your trip. You can begin the registration process up to 2 weeks in advance if you like.
  • Make sure your travel insurance plan covers you for any injuries or illnesses incurred during the trip.

For more information on entering Japan, refer to the checklist provided by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO): General Checklist For Traveling To Japan

Do I need to be vaccinated to go to Japan?

No vaccination is required to enter Japan. However, people who are triple vaccinated as of September 7, 2022, will not need to do a Covid test before they leave the country.

Under 18 years old, children traveling to Japan with their vaccinated parents or guardians will not need to bring vaccination certificates. They can also travel without negative Covid tests if they are accompanied by their parents or guardians.

Do I need to do a pre-departure Covid test?

Starting September 7th 2022, triple-vaccinated visitors no longer have to take a pre-departure test.

If you are not triple vaccinated, the pre-departure test is still required. You may seek further information regarding this requirement if you are still unsure of how to proceed.

Do I need to download any tracing apps in Japan?

Besides the Mysos App, which is designed as a Fast Track App, there is no requirement to download any apps to enter Japan.

The Mysos app works by providing you with a QR code, which is scanned at the airport by staff. This will allow them to access your information and verify your vaccination history. This ensures that your entry into Japan is quick and easy, without having to wait in line at immigration.

What measures are in place when I arrive in Japan?

The Japanese are traveling in their country and life is returning to normal, with restaurants and sights welcoming back visitors.

It is important for visitors to Japan and Japanese people alike to follow the country’s etiquette guidelines. Many Japanese wear face masks in public, and it’s not uncommon to see bottles of hand sanitizer tucked into pockets or purses.

In Japan, you will see markers on shop and store floors to encourage social distancing. Digital thermometers are at entrances of buildings along with the sign that asks people to wear a mask when they enter.

The Japan Tourism Agency has put together a nice set of graphics to illustrate the current travel etiquette guidelines:

Will I need to wear a mask in Japan?

Currently, the mask-wearing requirement is still in effect—but only as a recommendation rather than an actual law.

In May 2022, the Japanese government began to allow people to take off their masks more often. The decision was made because most of Japan’s large cities had excellent filtration systems and were safe for mask removal under certain conditions—such as when outdoors or in places with good ventilation, proper social distancing from strangers, etc.

The Japanese are known to wear masks in public if they have a cold or any other contagious illness, even before Covid happened. Since then, it has become customary to do so regardless of whether one is feeling sick—so much so that many people will still wear them when there’s no reason at all.

While official rules have changed, many people remain reluctant to take off their masks in public settings. The latest guidelines on wearing masks in Japan can be seen here.

Are there any restrictions on where tourists can travel?

Tourists can travel anywhere in Japan, but the government has advised visitors to avoid some areas because of damage from the earthquake and tsunami. These exclusion zones include northern Hokkaido and southern Kyushu—the two most distant islands.

Final Thoughts

We hope this article helped you understand how to travel to Japan from the Philippines. Of course, you need to take care of your personal travel requirements, but it’s not hard to plan a trip to Japan if you know where to go, especially now that there’s no visa requirement for traveling to Japan from the Philippines. Just make sure you check the latest travel advisories from the Japanese government before you go, and be sure to pack your passport.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Japan’s prime minister boarded a Philippine patrol ship on Saturday in a symbolic show of support as Tokyo shores up regional alliances to counter China’s assertiveness in maritime disputes with its neighbors.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to the Japanese-built BRP Teresa Magbanua, which was docked at the Manila harbor, capped his two-day visit to Manila. He held talks with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday to strengthen defense ties amid their countries’ shared concern over China’s behavior.

“I truly hope that this will lead to regional peace and prosperity as well as a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Keshida told top Philippine government and coast guard officials aboard the Magbanua, one of the two biggest patrol ships of Manila’s underfunded coast guard.

Japan has provided a dozen patrol ships to the Philippines in recent years, including the 97-meter (318-foot) -long Magbanua. Manila’s coast guard largely uses the ships for sovereignty patrols and to transport supplies and rotating navy and marine personnel to nine Philippines-occupied island, islets and reefs in the strategic South China Sea.

That has put the Philippine ships on a collision course with China’s massive coast guard and navy fleets in the South China Sea, which China claims virtually in its entirety. Aside from China and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also lay claim to parts of or the entire sea passage, a key global trade route.

The Philippines has strongly protested the Chinese coast guard’s use of blinding laser light and water cannon in separate incidents this year and its blockade that led to two minor collisions last month near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal.

In August, as the Magbanua tried to approach the shoal, which has been surrounded for years by China’s vessels, its crew saw a Chinese coast guard ship maneuver into blocking position with its 70 mm armament uncovered, according to the Philippine coast guard.

In their talks on Friday in Manila, Kishida and Marcos agreed to start negotiations for a key defense pact called the Reciprocal Access Agreement that would allow their troops to enter each other’s territory for joint military exercises.

The Japanese premier also announced that coastal surveillance radars would be provided to the Philippine navy under a new security grant program that aims to help strengthen the militaries of friendly countries..

Japan has had a longstanding territorial dispute with China over islands in the East China Sea.

In the first-ever speech by a Japanese premier before a joint session of the Philippine Congress on Saturday, Kishida pledged to continue helping bolster the capability of the Philippine military and maritime agencies.

Four nations combine in maritime first

8 April 2024

Australia, Japan, the Philippines and the United States conducted the first multilateral maritime cooperative activity on April 7, demonstrating a collective commitment to promote and strengthen regional and international support for an open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

The naval vessels and aircraft included the Philippine Navy's BRP Antonio Luna with AW159 Wildcat ASW helicopter, and BRP Valentin Diaz (PS177); the USS Mobile and a P-8A Poseidon from the United States Navy; Royal Australian Navy Anzac-class frigate HMAS Warramunga and a RAAF P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft; and JS Akebono  from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces.

Commanding Officer HMAS Warramunga Commander Jennifer Graham said it was an honour to participate in the first multilateral maritime cooperative activity within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone.

“We thoroughly enjoyed Philippine hospitality and activities while alongside at Puerto Princesa as part of our regional presence deployment, including cultural exchanges, ship tour and an official function, plus a goodwill match of soccer and basketball with the Philippine Navy at Naval Station Apolinario,” Commander Graham said.

“The maritime cooperative activity at sea included officer-of-the-watch manoeuvres, tactical manoeuvring and anti-submarine warfare exercises involving air assets from all four participants.

“These activities enhance interoperability and foster closer cooperation between the Australian Defence Force, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the United States Navy.

“Such activities directly contribute to the security and stability of the region and build mutual understanding and interoperability between nations and our armed forces.”

The RAAF P-8A crew worked with the AFP in international airspace, and 11 Squadron Detachment Commander Squadron Leader Tristan Hull said the crew found it beneficial to collaborate in consolidating maritime domain awareness procedures.

“We were very impressed with the capability, professionalism and support of the Armed Forces of the Philippines elements involved in the planning and execution of the activity,” Squadron Leader Hull said.

“By training together, we can build upon shared tactics, techniques and procedures to enhance interoperability and readiness to respond to shared security challenges.

“11 Squadron aviators welcomed senior Philippines colleagues during observation flights, which will greatly enhance our ability to operate seamlessly in the future.”

The activity underlined all four nations’ commitment to exercising freedom of navigation and overflight consistent with international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

LIST: US, Japan, Philippines strike deals on defense, investment at leaders’ summit

US President Joe Biden hosts Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for a trilateral summit at the White House in Washington, US, April 11, 2024.

Kevin Lamarque/REUTERS

WASHINGTON, USA – Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, US President Joe Biden, and Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. unveiled a wide range of agreements to enhance security and economic ties during meetings held at the White House this week.

Here are some of the most notable:

Military upgrade

Japan and the US announced plans to upgrade their military alliance, including the US military command in Japan and more joint development of defense equipment.

A joint summit statement said new military command-and-control frameworks would enable greater interoperability and planning in peacetime and during contingencies.

They also announced their intent to upgrade defense communications networks and to network air defense capabilities between the US, Australia and Japan to counter air and missile threats.

The defense plans will see the two sides establish a forum to identify areas for co-development and co-production of missiles and maintenance of US warships and aircraft.

They will also establish a working group for fighter pilot training, including AI and advanced simulators, and co-development and co-production of jet trainers.

AUKUS, South China Sea

Biden’s meeting with Kishida addressed Japan’s possible involvement in advanced capabilities projects of the AUKUS security pact. The US, Britain and Australia formed AUKUS in 2021 to push back against China’s growing influence.

A joint summit statement said the existing three AUKUS partners were considering cooperation with Japan in part of the plan that includes advanced capabilities and technologies across a range of areas, including quantum computing, undersea, hypersonic, artificial intelligence and cyber technology.

The joint statement highlighted “escalatory behavior” by China in the South China Sea. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday that more joint patrols can be expected in the South China Sea after drills by the United States, Australia, the Philippines and Japan last weekend.

Microsoft, AI

Microsoft said on Tuesday, April 9, it would invest $2.9 billion over two years to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in Japan.

Also on Tuesday, the countries announced four universities would partner on artificial intelligence research, funded by $110 million in private sector investment by NVIDIA, Amazon , SoftBank, Microsoft, and other companies.

Japan is hoping to land its first astronaut on the moon with the US Artemis project that envisages returning humans there by 2026, as competition with Russia and China intensifies. The joint statement announced a shared goal for a Japanese national to be the first non-American to land on the moon in an Artemis mission.

Nuclear fusion and sustainable aviation fuel

The two countries announced a joint partnership to accelerate development and commercialization of nuclear fusion. The project will focus on the scientific and technical challenges of delivering commercial fusion and expand work between US and Japanese universities, national laboratories and private companies, the US Department of Energy said.

Scientists, governments and companies have been trying for decades to harness fusion, the nuclear reaction that powers the sun, to provide carbon-free electricity. It can be replicated on Earth with heat and pressure using lasers or magnets to fuse two light atoms into a denser one, releasing large amounts of energy.

Japan and the US also agreed during the summit to support sustainable aviation fuel.

Bullet trains

The US and Japan signaled support for a plan to build the first high-speed rail in the U.S. using Japanese bullet trains. The project would link the Texas cities of Dallas and Houston and is estimated to cost around $25-$30 billion but faces legal and political hurdles.

Philippines

The US plans a Coast Guard joint patrol in the Indo-Pacific region in the coming year as well as joint maritime training activities like one scheduled “around Japan in 2025,” the countries said.

Washington will also place undisclosed “humanitarian relief commodities” at Philippine military bases, they said.

New investments were announced in undersea cables, logistics, clean energy and telecommunications. Facebook parent Meta invested in a submarine cable system that would connect the US with the Philippines.

Biden’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment backed a new Luzon corridor effort in the Philippines, aimed at infrastructure projects including ports, rail, clean energy and semiconductor supply chains. – Rappler.com

President Biden is hosting a trilateral meeting today with Japan and the Philippines, two key U.S. allies in Asia. Both countries currently have territorial disputes with China — Japan in the East China Sea and the Philippines in the South China Sea. The leaders will discuss shared values and alliance strengthening. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Biden are expected to discuss infrastructure projects, including a bullet train line in Texas.

  • Many countries in Asia rely on China for trade and the U.S. for security, NPR's Anthony Kuhn tells Up First . Now, nations feel pressured to pick sides because of the U.S.-China rivalry. Aaron Connelly, a Singapore-based expert in Southeast Asian politics, tells Kuhn that the U.S. has historically played a stabilizing role in Southeast Asia. But its rivalry with China is making Southeast Asia less safe.

Changes to the government's federal student aid form, or FAFSA, could mean that fewer high school seniors will go to college this fall. The Education Department launched a new form this year. Delays and errors have plagued the process, and as a result, almost half a million fewer students have applied to FAFSA this year compared to 2023.

  • High FAFSA completion numbers have historically meant higher college enrollment numbers, NPR's Elissa Nadworny says. Students who have been accepted to college tell her it's not real until the schools send them financial aid packages. In many cases, that hasn't happened yet. For low-income students, these packages are crucial so they can make a decision about whether they can afford college.

European Union lawmakers have passed a new package of laws that could change the EU's migration and asylum policies. The EU Asylum and Migration Pact aims to make it harder for people to come to Europe and stay there if they don't have a valid reason to seek asylum, such as fear of persecution in their home country. The new laws are also intended to help countries along Europe's southern border share the responsibilities of caring for migrants with other EU nations.

  • No one knew whether the package would pass "right up until the very end," NPR's Teri Schultz reports from Brussels. Human rights activists protested the vote, chanting, " This pact kills, vote no ," and launching paper airplanes with details of migrants who died at sea trying to make it to Europe. Some far-right lawmakers opposed the package, saying it doesn't go far enough to block people from coming to Europe. Some on the far left say the package doesn't do enough to protect people who need it or take the burden off frontline countries.

About a third of all taxpayers are expected to file their returns in the last two weeks before the April 15th deadline. Scott Olson/Getty Images hide caption

About a third of all taxpayers are expected to file their returns in the last two weeks before the April 15th deadline.

Next Monday is Tax Day. Have you filed your return yet? If you're a procrastinator (like me), here are some things you need to know :

  • This year's tax season began a week later than last year's. But the total number of returns filed so far remains even with 2023.
  • You can file for an extension to get six more months to file. Pay any taxes you think you may owe now, though, to avoid penalties and interest for a late payment.
  • The IRS's pilot "Direct File" program will let some people in 12 states file electronically directly with the federal government for free. You can also check out free tax filing options at the IRS Free File website.
  • Wages have generally been rising , which means you could find yourself in a higher tax bracket.

Many members of Rachel Mukantabana's family were killed in the 1994 genocide.

This week, Rwanda marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide in which nearly one million people, most of them ethnic Tutsis, were killed. Rachel Mukantabana was a teenager at the time. Her mother, four siblings and more than 50 members of her extended family were killed. Today, Mukantabana lives in a "reconciliation village," where people who survived the genocide live side by side with those who took part in the killings.

See photos of Rwanda today from NPR's team on the ground, and read the stories of survivors and killers as they learn to live side-by-side .
