Campus Map Spotlight: Berry College

This month we will be highlighting Berry College, a comprehensive liberal-arts college in Rome, Georgia. The college student body is 2,073 undergrads, however, Berry College is the world’s largest contiguous college campus. Woah!

The campus covers over 27,000 acres of woodlands, meadows, and streams. Berry has 15 classroom facilities, 10 residence halls, both of which make up a portion of the 47 primary buildings on campus. The landscape, buildings, and landmarks are showcased through detailed, 3D renders.

What Makes the Berry College CampusBird Map Unique?

The Berry College map includes 11 different categories. Each category includes several subcategories that are geographically highlighted on the map with a picture and short description. And there are some fun ones! We’ll talk about these: Historic, Cottage, and Tree Walk Tour categories.

Historic Category

Founded in 1902, Berry College has a rich history that is well documented on their CampusBird map. Beginning as a Boy’s Industrial School, the founder Martha Berry believed education was a way local children could escape poverty. 

Berry’s campus map features nine different on-campus historic locations, including two museums. Each location includes several pictures and descriptions of the history behind the building or landmark. The map provides information on what the buildings are used for now and how/when you can visit them in person. For example, the description for the Oak Hill Museum includes a link to the Oak Hill Museum website.

If you took a good look at the image above, you’re probably wondering….Possum Trot? No, not an annual 5k to raise money for possum awareness :) But a beautiful old wooden church also credited to Martha Berry; Possum Trot was the name of the  Sunday School ! 

Cottage Category

There are nine different cottages highlighted on Berry’s campus map. The two oldest cottages were built in 1913, and eight of the nine cottages are all located in the same “neighborhood” on campus. Just like the Historic category, you can view pictures and descriptions of the cottages, each built for a different purpose and with a rich history.

Today, all of the cottages are part of the Service Cottages Program, meaning each cottage has its own unique service project. The goal of this program is to help satisfy various needs within the Rome community. The inclusion of the cottages on the Berry campus map is not necessary, however, small details like this help to tell the story of Berry College and what it stands for, and can make a big impression on prospective students and their parents, and also make the map a fun way for current students to explore and learn more. 

Tree Walk Virtual Tour

One of the unique features of the Berry College map is the Tree Walk Virtual Tour, using CampusBird’s VitalPath tour system. The tour includes 40 different stops, all featuring different types of trees. Not only does this showcase the wide variety of vegetation within the campus, it also gives you a feel for the sheer size of the gorgeous campus property. It is a tour of history and science, yet small and fun details, such as the on-campus frisbee golf course, make this tour stand out. 

Again, the inclusion of this is absolutely not required. However, it captures history and amenities that help Berry College stand out. This category is great for prospective students who want a feel for the vastness of the campus, while it also creates points of differentiation that students will remember throughout their college search. It is also a nice tool for current students and visitors who are curious about the history and science of the thousands of trees.

Berry College’s Best Practice: Polygon Tool

Being the largest contiguous campus in the world, the Berry College map covers a lot of space. With the polygon tool, Berry College map admin can select custom areas of their map in order to share more specific portions of the entire map. For example, if Berry College is hosting an event that takes place on a small segment of their campus (at say, Possum Trot) an admin can polygon that specific area to share with visitors.

The polygon tool is extremely user-friendly and helps people quickly locate where they need to go and how to get there. College campuses can be very confusing, especially large ones. The ability to partition and simplify a complex map is an extremely useful tool when an entire map and all of its categories are not necessary.

The Coolest Thing on the Berry College Campus Map: Student Housing

When applying for student housing, students often don’t know the options. Dormitories/halls vary tremendously in terms of location and amenities. Berry College makes housing selection super easy for their prospective students by giving them detailed info on dormitory locations, history, amenities, size, and what types of students generally reside there.

Berry  Preview Days

Join us for an introduction to all things Berry! With the chance to tour our campus with current students, meet your admission counselor, and learn more about some of the programs that make Berry special, a preview day offers a great first look at the Berry experience.

Summer Preview Day

Friday, june 21, 2024, monday, july 15, 2024.

Registration for Summer 2024 will open on May 1.

Who can come to this event?

Berry Preview Days are designed as an introductory event for high school or transfer students who are just beginning their college search. Parents and family members are welcome to attend, but each registered student will be limited to 2 additional guests.

When and how should we register?

We recommend registering online as soon as you know your availability, as our events frequently fill up in advance and space is limited. We close registration at least two days before each event to allow for event preparation and setup. Online registration is the best way to ensure that we get complete information to prepare for your Preview Day visit. If you have any problems with the online form, please give us a call.

How should a group of prospective Berry students be registered?

We prefer that each prospective student register for the event separately. This will allow us to be prepared with a personalized information packet when you arrive for check-in.

Where do we go when we get to campus?

Driving directions  to Berry are available online. When you arrive, enter Berry through the main entrance on Martha Berry Hwy. As a guest, you will be asked to stop at the Welcome Center. Please watch for signs and be prepared to provide identification. After you enter campus, follow the signs for Admission Event parking.

What will students do at a Berry Preview Day?

Preview Days include programmed sessions that you will attend, rather than a drop-in open house event. You will attend an information session introducing you to Berry and our admissions process, take a walking tour of campus with current students, and have the chance to learn more about some of the academic and student life programs that make Berry unique. An academic meet-and-greet and an optional lunch will also be offered.

What will my parents do?

Your parents will get to do everything you do, and we ask that you and your guests stick together during your visit to make the most of your time on campus.

Is there a cost to attend a Preview Day?

No. You and your family are invited to join us free of charge. A light breakfast and coffee will be available at no cost during check-in for morning guests, and an optional lunch will be available for all guests as well. Specialty coffee and other snack items will be available for purchase if desired.

Will Preview Day be different than a Daily Visit?

Absolutely! Preview Days offer you the chance to meet people you may not have met while you were here for your daily visit. It’s a great way to explore our academic programs and campus life areas and interact with a number of current students.

Can I still come to a Preview Day if I have been accepted?

The information presented at Preview Days is designed for students who are just beginning the college search process. If you have already been accepted, we encourage you to come to one of our events for admitted students, like Decision Berry  or  Berry Bound . Or think about coming for a personalized  daily visit choosing from several opportunities available to help you make your college decision. These options will give you more in-depth information that you may need if you are further along in the admission process.

A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder Opens

The Berry College Theatre Company will open their spring season April 4, with the musical "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder".

The show runs April 4-7, Thursday to Saturday at 7 p.m. with a matinee performance on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online at: www.berry.edu/onstage

"A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" follows Monty Narravo as he discovers that he is ninth in line to an earldom currently occupied by the well-known D'Y squith family. Soon after this discovery and his rejection by the lovely and vain Sibella Hayward, the eccentric members of the D'Ysquith family begin dying in mysterious ways. Along the way, Monty meets his distant cousin, the beautiful and naive Phoebe D'Y squith, placing him in the middle of a complicated love triangle.

Scott Willis, an artist affiliate at Berry, is directing the show.

"Directing A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder has been an absolute joy, filled with endless creativity and laughter throughout the production process,” Willis said. “From casting to rehearsals, every moment has been a delightful exploration of wit and charm. I've had the privilege of working with an incredibly talented cast and crew who have brought this comedic masterpiece to life with passion and dedication.”

Junior theatre major Mary Claire Page is playing the character Sibella Hayward.

"This show is nothing but pure joy and silliness from start to finish,” Page said. “It's hilarious, over-the-top, and everything you love about musical theatre. Sibella has been so much fun to play, and I hope audiences love her just as much as I do!"

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
