Chimparoo Woven Trek Review

I received this product at no cost to facilitate my review. All opinions remain my own.

Can we discuss, just for a moment, how beautiful this carrier is? Looks aren’t everything, but man does this carrier look good.  It also happens to match pretty much everything that I own. The good news is that it is as functional as it is beautiful.

Before I tell you about our adventures with our Trek and why we love it, let’s get you two acquainted.

What I noticed most of all out of the box was the thickness of the waist band. Under the rectangular pouch you see at the top of the carrier is the nap hood and the infant insert:

The hood and infant insert are made of the same soft, stretchy material.

Use with a Newborn:

I’ve been carrying Little Miss Cub in our TREK since she was about 8 lbs. The built-in infant insert is super easy to use and I love that it is stretchy. I am able to get her into and out of the carrier with ease. I also like how easy it is to snap the insert to the sides of the carrier:

The insert is kind of like a hammock for tiny babies:

At her very tiniest, I put her into the “hammock” with her knees up against my stomach. By about 10 lbs, she was able to comfortably straddle the insert so she could have her legs in the “M” position.

To make the carrier small enough to accommodate my little nursling, I cinch the shoulder straps to their tightest and keep her kissable!

The nap hood is most definitely my favourite of all the brands I’ve tried (Boba, Ergo, Tula, Liliputti…).

Overall Comfort:

On a recent trip to Banff, I wore Little Miss Cub comfortably for good chunks of time, and she snoozed peacefully under our Belly Bedaine sweater.

Use with a Big Kid:

The back of the carrier is certainly not as high on Cub’s back as the Toddler Tula , but his bum is very well supported.

Both Papa Wolf and Cub reported that they were very comfortable!

Bottom Line:

The TREK is seriously an awesome carrier: I love it. I love that the infant insert isn’t a separate accessory, I love how soft and stretchy it and the nap hood both are. I love the wide, supportive waist, and how well it accommodated even our three-year-old jumbo Cub. It’s also made in Canada! I don’t find the shoulder straps as easy to adjust as with the Tula, as you actually pull the straps upwards rather than downwards to tighten, but this isn’t a deal breaker, especially since the TREK doesn’t require the purchase of a separate infant insert, and it’s Canadian made.  I look forward to continuing to use the TREK with Little Miss Cub as she outgrows the infant insert, and I still need to try a front carry with the straps crossed, something that is possible with the TREK but I haven’t tried yet!

Give me about a year, and I’ll be able to do a truly detailed comparison of all the SSCs we will have tried, but for now, I don’t hesitate in recommending the TREK as a soft-structured carrier that can be used pretty much right from birth.

I would LOVE to know where to get this Trek for a decent price online (no access to stores up here in the North of Ontario) I have heard SO many good things and have spoken to alot of petite Mamas (I’m 5′) and love your review.. I got my trek from lil monkey cheeks and I am in love with it! It was free shipping and received it in record time! I am petite and it fits well with the shoulder straps crissed crossed.

I also got my Trek from Lil Monkey Cheeks! My only complaint is that I find the waist band is extremely stiff – like a piece of cardboard. I am wondering if it will this soften up once it is broken in…

Hey Jennifer! I totally know what you mean, and I noticed it too. However, I’ve noticed basically no consequence in terms of comfort or function so far. I’m going to keep the review updated as we continue using the Trek, and so far the waistband’s stiffness hasn’t bothered me. Besides the way it feels in my hands, I don’t notice any difference when I’m wearing. What about you?

Done and done!

I have a chimparoo trek and am struggling with the waistband. It is super stiff, does not conform to my body, and the lower half of the waistband is not even in contact with my body. As a result i Find the waistband to not be supporting the baby’s weight the way it suppose to and ultimately feel pressure and the weight anywhere between my shoulders and upper back. Any suggestions? Did your waistband soften with time?

Hi Tiffeny! It’s not a problem I’ve had, actually, the Trek is my husband’s current favourite carrier, so I haven’t been using it as much recently. It has been my favourite so far for back carries, too. Let me wear it around again and see if I can figure out any adjustments. Also, don’t hesitate to contact Chimparoo’s customer service, and I’d suggest sending a picture of you wearing baby so you can get expert troubleshooting!

I LOVE the look of this carrier, but I live nowhere near a retailer. I tried to contact Chimparoo with a question via email and via facebook message, and received no reply. I speak no French and was unable to understand the outgoing message when I rang them. Therefore, I’m reaching out to people who have a Chimparoo Trek! Can you please tell me how long the waist belt is? I don’t want to purchase this lovely carrier, only to be disappointed in the fit.

Is this the iris color? Is it more green or teal in color?

Thank you for his review!! We are foster parents so sometimes I have a 5 lb newborn & other times I have a 24 lb 8 month old. I have an ergo (that I never wear), a bitybean (which I absolutely Love, but it starts at 3 months, solly wrap (which I use for newborn, but would love a scc that works for a newborn). Do you think the chimparoo trek would be a good option for the itty burry babies I get sometimes? Does it fold up small enough to go in a diaper bag?

The minimum recommended weight with the Trek is 7 lbs. You can roll it up for the diaper bag, honestly it’s about the size of an ergo! I wouldn’t recommend the Trek below the recommended weight range, but otherwise it is a great SSC for newborns thanks to the built-in insert!

Either it is a happy coincidence that my daughter suddenly likes to be worn, or the Chimparoo Trek is the magical soft-structured carrier I’ve been waiting for. In the four months of her existence, we’ve explored just about every category of babywearing (structured, semi-structured/soft, wraps and slings). She will not tolerate any of them! I can’t say I blame her … I feel extremely claustrophobic and uncomfortable in wraps and slings.

Before getting the Chimparoo Trek , I was pretty convinced it would be another failed attempt at babywearing and I would just have to give up on the idea. I am happy to say that I was wrong! The first time we tried it, Ava (at 3 months) lasted about five minutes. The next day we reached 10 minutes and since then she’s happy in it for over an hour!

So far I have only worn her in the front carry position because of her size. She sits snugly in the built-in stretchy fabric infant seat. There is also a head support (made from the same stretchy fabric) that is supposed to reach over the baby’s head and attach to the snap-on shoulder strap. Maybe my child has a giant head, but it is far too tight even after stretching it all the way out. This is probably a great feature for smaller babies, but no dice with a 4-month-old.

While she’s still small, I have several carrying options—although this seems to be the norm with carriers these days. The front carry (tummy-to-tummy) method is what I have used the most, but Ava’s almost big enough to try some other options. In the front carry, the shoulder straps can be worn like a backpack or can be crossed (which I prefer, as it seems to distribute the weight better). The straps are very well padded—they don’t dig into my shoulders, so I can comfortably wear her longer.

My husband and I can both wear the Trek, with quick adjustments when we switch back and forth. It’s a good fit for basically any adult, big or small, and the clever design keeps it useful from birth until early childhood (around 7–14 pounds). When a child gets so big that her knees are not supported by the fabric (somewhere between 12-18 months), you can simply attach accessory stirrups to the carrier, which keep her in the best ergonomic position.

The best  part: I can finally be hands-free around the house! Now when I do laundry, it doesn’t take me a week to fold it and put it away … I can actually do it in one or two days. I tried to do housework with a fabric wrap in the past, but never felt like it was secure enough to be completely hands-free. The Trek isn’t too bulky to wear around the house, but also feels substantial enough for outdoor activities. Perhaps someday I’ll be fit again and can try it on a hike, ha! For now, I just enjoy not having to lug around a bulky stroller, and use the carrier for quick errands. It can be folded up to fit in compact spaces, but it definitely can’t fit in a typical diaper bag along with every other baby item you need when you leave the house.

The entire babywearing line at Chimparoo is designed to keep baby in a safe, comfortable and ergonomic position. The owner’s career history includes occupational therapy and textiles—a perfect combo for creating solid babywearing products.

The Trek is made with organic cotton and is available in 16 different color schemes. It is also certified free of toxic heavy metals and chemicals, which is handy since my little one likes to chew on it during every ride. I believe the straps and buckles are also non-toxic, but haven’t been able to verify that. After chewing, slobber, spit-up and diaper messes while babywearing, the Trek should be hand-washed, or put in a delicates bag (if washing in a front-opening washing machine).

The instruction manual is pretty straightforward, but it could  use some better step-by-step detail. I’m slow to figure these things out and need solid hand-holding to get it right. The accompanying DVD and videos on the Chimparoo website are not especially helpful. Happy women and perfectly cooperative babies show you how quickly they can put the carrier on and change positions, while I’m pressing pause and rewinding 80 times to figure out what just connected to what. Luckily, I found this YouTube video (published by the founder of the company), which is much more detailed and offers step-by-step narration and demonstrations.

Priced around $149, the Trek is a tremendous buy! It is about the same price point as other semi-structured carriers, but does not require the additional purchase of an infant insert. Having the built-in stretchy infant piece that tucks away is brilliant!

The newborn seat is a piece of stretch fabric you can use to cover up your baby's back on colder days. This is done by attaching it to the waist near the belt.

You can use the   Chimparöo Evolutive Belt   instead of the newborn seat when you want your baby's legs out on either side.

To carry your baby in a sitting position beyond 18 months, we recommend the use of   Chimparöo Foot Straps   or   Chimparöo Leg Supports . These accessories can also be use together.  

Instructions

Since the baby carrier's fabrics and components have been transported and manipulated several times during manufacturing and its straps more slippery when brand new, the baby carrier should be washed before its first use. We recommend washing it by hand using no rinse soap and hanging it to dry. The baby carrier should not be ironed. You can use   sucking pads   to avoid washing it every day.

Take note that the arrangement of colours can differ from one baby carrier to another because each Trek is made unique by being cut out of a fabric whose striped pattern has many nuances. Your baby carrier can be returned to us should you not like the arrangement.

We bought this online only from the pictures. But wow ! Its more beautiful seeing it in person. This is a great purchase for our baby and will last for years to come. Great investment!

I am loving this 4 in 1 convertible crib! It's very sturdy and it looks absolutely beautiful. It took me a little over an hour to put together by myself (while 6 months pregnant). The directions were not that easy for me to follow

Inspiré des porte-bébés traditionnels en tissu, reconnus pour leur confort, il procure un enveloppement rassurant et réconfortant pour un maximum d'intimité et de tendresse avec le parent. Grâce à son tissu doux Microtec (une technologie qui régule la température) et à ses nombreux accessoires, ce porte-bébé peut se porter en toute saison , à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur du confort de chez soi et assure un confort inégalé autant au porteur qu'au bébé.  

CARACTÉRISTIQUES

• Âge de l'enfant  : De la naissance à la petite enfance (8 à 65 lb - 3,6 à 30 kg). Ajustable en largeur et en hauteur, il s'adapte à la taille et à la croissance du bébé.
• Taille du porteur ou de la porteuse : Un porte-bébé qui correspondra à tous et toutes grâce à son système d'ajustement très flexible.
• Positions de portage  : Jusqu'à 8 positions disponibles qui permettent de s'adapter à l’âge, au degré d’éveil ou à l’activité choisie.
• Accessoires inclus et disponibles qui permettent de réguler la température, améliorer encore le confort et d'offrir du rangement au porteur ou à la porteuse.
• Port des bretelles  : Elles peuvent être portées parallèles ou croisées. Le porte-bébé peut aussi être porté sans les bretelles pour plus de liberté et moins de chaleur.

ACCESSOIRES

Le panneau réversible amovible et  un sac de transport sont inclus.  Un ensemble de 3 accessoire est aussi disponible.  Celui-ci comprend un support lombaire , des supports de jambes et une pochette de ceinture .  

Le panneau amovible réversible permet de réguler la température du bébé. Lorsqu'il est ajouté, il permet de réchauffer bébé par temps frais. Enlevé, les mailles offrent une aération optimale par temps chaud. En plus, il accessoirise votre porte-bébé grâce à ses deux côtés réversibles aux textures et style différents.  

Ajoutez l'ensemble d'accessoire.  Le support lombaire permet d'augmenter votre confort quand il prend du poids, de vous aider au transfert de bébé sur le dos ou de porter votre bébé sans les bretelles.

Des supports de jambes sont aussi offert pour améliorer encore plus votre confort et celui de votre bambin à partir de 6 mois. Bébé sera alors bien assis et collé contre vous dans son porte-bébé!

La pochette de ceinture vous offre plus de rangement. Elle s'attache directement sur le porte-bébé et elle peut aussi être portée seule en sac de taille.
