In line with the lingering effect of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 and have to cancel your trip, COTA may cover the cost of your travel and accommodation. The COVID-19 travel benefit can range from $2,500 to $10,000 or more depending on the plan you select.

Personal Liability: For injuries to people due to negligence or damage to their property, you can get personal liability cover starting at an average of $300,000 and up to $2,500,000 based on your plan.

Accidental Death: If you die within 12 months of an injury that occurred during your trip, your family will be compensated for your accidental death.

Excess for rental Vehicle Insurance: You will receive coverage for the rental vehicle insurance excess you are required to pay.

Emergency Assistance: You will receive a quick emergency response if you suffer any medical condition.

Essential Plan

If you’re a traveler who prefers basic coverage at an affordable price, the Essential plan is a good option. The plan provides cover for medical expenses, luggage cover, and passport cover due to loss.

However, the plan does not cover critical illness or injury, emergency travel expenses for friends or relatives, emergency accommodation due to terrorism, or COVID-19-related events.

The Essential plan is only available to residents of Australia up to the age of 69 and above.

Some plan benefits and limits:

  • Unlimited cover for overseas medical expenses.
  • Covers up to $5,000 and a limit of $50 for every 24 hours for medical compensation.
  • Travel delay cover up to $1,000 and a limit of $250 per 24 hrs.

This plan is suitable for those who travel multiple times during the year. With this policy, only adults are required to pay premiums, while their kids can get coverage without paying for a premium. It also includes cover for emergency accommodation due to terrorism.

During the 12-month period of insurance, you can take an unlimited number of trips, each with a maximum 45-day cap. Plan suspension is not possible.

Unlike the Essential plan, this policy is available for all Australians regardless of age.

Tied with Annual Multi Trip Plan, this plan offers more benefits for those traveling for up to 12 months. All residents of Australia are eligible for this plan with no age limits.

Note that you can only purchase this plan up to 12 months before your trip, and if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, you may be subject to screening.

This plan is available for all Australians and no age limit is placed.

What types of travel insurance policies does cota offer.

COTA’s selection of travel insurance policies includes:

  • Comprehensive Plan: under this comprehensive travel insurance, you can get coverage for trips up to one year long, with coverage available for up to a year before you plan to leave. There may be a medical exam requirement if you’re over 81 and this covers the policyholder, their spouse or domestic partner and their children, up to the policy's maximum limit.
  • Essentials Plan: this basic coverage offers you protection for a slew of incidentals, including overseas medical costs, emergency travel arrangements, travel delays and the cancellation and resumption of your trip if you need to return home to Australia in a hurry. However, you won’t be covered for emergency accommodation due to a terrorist attack, hiring replacement golf or surfing equipment and loss of income due to delays in returning home. You must be no older than 69 to take out an essentials policy.
  • Australian Travel Plan: this policy is for those wanting to take a trip across Australia and provides you with benefits such as cover for additional charges, cancellation fees, baggage and personal possessions, rental vehicle insurance excess, accidental death and personal liability.
  • Annual Multi-Trip: this type of annual travel insurance policy is for frequent travellers. Each journey is restricted to a maximum of 50 days and can be purchased 30 days before you jet off, with your coverage lasting for 12 months. Unlike some annual policies, this one doesn’t have an age limit attached to it.

What optional extras are available through COTA’s travel insurance policies?

COTA offers just one optional extra, which is for snow sports. This add-on cover is only available with comprehensive or annual travel insurance policies and can cover you if you’re skiing or doing some snowboarding , including on and off-piste and across the backcountry. For an extra cost, you can be covered for ski lift passes, the closure of your ski run and the hiring of replacement snow sports equipment.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through COTA?

Some of the general exclusions on COTA’s travel insurance policy include:

  • Unapproved pre-existing medical conditions
  • Undergoing elective or cosmetic surgery
  • Taking part in a clinical trial
  • Travelling against your doctor’s advice
  • Losses of personal items if they are left unattended
  • Intentional injuries or attempted suicide
  • Accidents caused by alcohol or drug consumption
  • Partaking in a professional sport
  • Expenses already claimed through private health or Medicare
  • Costs involved with you breaking the law

What we like, suitable covid-19 coverage.

COTA not only covers the cost of your medical expenses if you catch COVID-19, but they’ll also stump up for any extra travel or cancellation costs if you or a close family member back home test positive for the virus.

Credit card scam cover

COTA’s comprehensive policy offers you cover if your credit or debit cards are stolen and fraudulently used, which isn’t something many other providers roll into their policies.

Cover for your four-legged friends

If your return home is delayed, COTA allows you to claim up to $500 in additional costs for the boarding or care of your dog or cat .

What we don't like

Lack of extras.

Unlike some of its competitors, COTA only offers a single optional extra to travellers, with snow sports the only add-on available.

Limited rental car coverage

COTA only allows you to claim up to $5,000 for the excess on a rental car, compared to other providers who offer up to $8,000.

Some of the policies come with age restrictions, limiting coverage for seniors over 69 if they wish to take out an Essentials plan instead of Comprehensive.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Frequently asked questions about COTA’s travel insurance

COTA’s PDS says making a claim is relatively straightforward as long as you submit your claim form as soon as possible. Part of this will include lodging a claim form with ample detail and providing documents, reports and photographs to back up your claim. Once your claim is submitted, most insurers will tell you it can take up to ten working days for it to be processed and money reimbursed into your nominated bank account.

Travel insurance doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all cost. Instead, the price of your premium is determined by variables including:

  • Destination ( travelling to Pakistan to visit family can be costly because of the lack of universal health care)
  • Level of coverage
  • Optional extras you choose
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Chosen policy excess

Yes – COTA covers travellers who are pregnant at the time they buy their policy or afterwards. You can claim for pregnancy-related illnesses up to their 26th week of gestation, so long as you're only expecting one child and have had no prior pregnancy complications. There is no cover for those who fall pregnant through medical help, such as those who use IVF.

A single-trip policy only covers one trip, whereas an annual multi-trip coverage covers numerous trips over 12 months (typically up to between 45 and 90 days in length each). In contrast, one-way plans protect travellers without return tickets booked for up to a year after they leave Australia.

Off travelling soon? Need a few tips and reminders from the experts? Everything from packing, clever things to take, all the new COVID rules and even quarantine free destinations – the experts give you their tips below!

Return to travel advice

Quentin Long from International Traveller, recently appeared Channel 9’s Weekend Today show with his new travel tips. See the video  HERE  for his advice, including:

  • Passports –Get passports sorted and renewed early, there is a big backlog at the moment so allow for delays.
  • Visa’s – Remember travel visas for some destinations, check before going if this applies to your destination and make sure they are organised in advance.
  • Health – do you have enough medicine for your time away? Because we are all so focussed on COVID-19 we also need to remember our own medicines and any relevant travel vaccines, like Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Rabies etc.
  • Cash – remember to organise your foreign currency before leaving, such as foreign cash or travel cards.
  • Travel insurance –  “If you can’t afford travel insurance, then you cannot afford to travel!”
  • Download your International COVID Vaccination proof, and have them available (including hard copies) for your travel destinations.
  • Make sure you know and fulfil what the COVID testing requirements are for your destinations and operators.
  • Pack enough disposable masks for your time away – a new mask whilst travelling every 4 hours is advised. Also, pack hand sanitiser and hard copies of your vaccinations and test results.
  • Record all support contact numbers, such as the local consular, medical and travel insurance contacts.

Overall, Quentin’s advice is to get a travel agent for overseas booking, as they are up to date on all the requirements.

Essential travel items

Lightweight jacket

Always carry a lightweight jacket that can be folded into the palm of your hand.

Translation app

Travel with an audio translation app on your phone, great for overcoming language barriers, there are many to choose from.

After a day of sightseeing or hiking, a golf ball is a handy tool. Take off your shoes and roll the ball on the soles of your feet. It is an instant massage and rejuvenates your muscles ready for another day of sightseeing.

Take your own favourite tea bags travelling as you can never be sure what (if any) will be at your accommodation. There is nothing better than a hot cup of tea at the end of a long sightseeing day.

Empty water bottle

Make sure to pack an empty water bottle. Once you are through security at the airport you can fill it up at the water bubblers and ask the flight attendants to fill it for you on the plane. This saves money on purchased drinks and keeps you hydrated.

Pack of wipes

Wipes can help in so many ways when travelling, such as make up remover at the end of the day, cleaning shoes or white sneakers, blotting a stain out of clothing or simply cleaning sticky fingers!

Cadence’s natty little capsules

Small containers that stick together with tiny magnets. Use them for toiletries, tablets, small jewellery items and more. The labels can be customised and they fit enough product for a week’s trip away, without leaking or cracking. check them out  here.

Zippered pillow case

For many reasons this is a good idea. Use it for a dirty laundry bag, or use it when your luggage is over the weight limit, fill it with clothes and use it as a pillow on your flight (and reduce your luggage weight). Lastly use it as a pillowcase in your accommodation, if you don’t like the ones supplied!

Glasses chain

Glasses chains, now available in many styles online, not only act as a perfect way to keep your glasses or sunglass on you, but they are also ideal for facemasks. They are also a clever way to keep hold of your Air Pods!

Padded cases

Soft cases, such as  these  are ideal for anything that needs protection from damage while travelling, such as a laptop, tablet, passport, travel papers, and glasses.

Mini mist sprayer

A mini water mister is ideal for combatting the dry air on a plane trip or keeping you cool in a hot climate. You can even use it to mist and hang your clothing when you don’t have access to an iron. They are available  here.

Make sure to check your destinations precautionary steps in relation to the COVID-19 variant of concern. See  Travel Updates  for more information.

Before booking and travelling, make sure you check the latest Government travel requirements. These may include mandatory health declarations, vaccinations, COVID-19 tests, use of facemasks, entry permits, pre-approval and quarantine (possibly at your own expense), or you could be denied entry.

Also, check the latest airline travel requirements to ensure a seamless journey.

Have your passport ready, remember to check your passport expiry date, and ensure it meets the validity requirements for the destination you are travelling to.

International vaccination and travel requirements

Before you get to the airport, make sure you have a valid vaccination certificate for international travel.

If you need a pre-departure COVID-19 test, it is important to ensure you have the correct documentation from an approved testing facility.

For those with vaccination exemptions and medical clearance, make sure you have the required proof  if you can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons, or require prior positive medical clearance for your pre-departure test.

At the airport and on board

With the impact of COVID-19, there are some changes to inflight and airport services, lounges and more. Arrive at the airport early, as airports might be busier than we are may have been used to in the past. It is recommended that you arrive 4 hours ahead of your international flight.

Bookings with other airlines, travel agents and other third parties

If your flights were booked through another airline, a travel agency or third-party website, you will need to contact them directly for assistance. If you are having difficulties contacting your agent, or your agent has ceased operating,  complete this request form .

Travel destinations that are quarantine free

New Zealand

Vaccinated Australians can enter New Zealand and self-test on arrival. You must provide a negative COVID-19 pre-departure test. After you enter New Zealand you must do two rapid antigen tests (RATs) on Day 0/1 and Day 5/6 and declare your results.

Switzerland

Switzerland is relaxing COVID-19 restrictions. You are no longer required to present proof of recovery certificate or negative PCR test on arrival. Non-residents must still present proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter.

Quarantine-free for fully vaccinated Australians. You will still need a pre-departure test within two days of departure and complete a Singapore Arrival Card. If you are not fully vaccinated you will need to purchase travel insurance with a minimum coverage of SGD 30,000.

Quarantine-free for fully vaccinated Australians. From April 1, pre-entry COVID-19 tests are no longer required for entry if you are fully vaccinated.

Quarantine-free for fully vaccinated Australians. You will still need a pre-travel PCR test lab result with validity 48 hours from departure time at the country of origin

Quarantine free travel to fully vaccinated travellers. Proof of vaccination, a negative pre-departure COVID test (PCR-48 hrs/RAT 24 hrs before flight) as well as evidence of a pre-booked RAT following your arrival into Fiji is required, and travel insurance with international coverage for COVID-19.

If you’re aged 18 and over, you must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination and show a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than one day before travel.

Quarantine-free travel to Thailand for fully vaccinated travellers who apply for ‘Test and Go’ scheme. You’ll need proof of vaccination, a negative COVID test (RT-PCR) after arrival, booking for one day at approved SHA Extra+ or AQ hotel, insurance with minimum coverage of $20,000 USD.

Financial Services Guide

Financial services guide insurance and membership services ltd trading as cota insurance.

INTRODUCTION This Financial Services Guide (FSG) is intended to help you make an informed decision about the financial services and products we can provide to you as a retail client.

This guide contains important information about: ꞏ the financial services we offer you; ꞏ who we act for in providing these services; ꞏ how we and other relevant persons are remunerated; and our internal and external dispute resolution process and how you can access them.

Where required, you will be given a Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before or at the time you acquire any product as a retail client. The PDS sets out the standard terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the product to assist you in making an informed decision about whether to purchase it or not.

This FSG only covers services we provide on Home, Landlord, Car, Caravan and Trailer, Pleasure Craft and Commercial insurance products. Please keep this FSG along with the PDS and other policy documents in a safe place for future reference.

WHO ARE WE? Insurance and Membership Services Limited (IMS), a company limited by guarantee, has operated as an Insurance Agency since the company was formed in 1993. IMS provides products and services to members of COTA, Ambassador Card holders and others. For the purpose of this FSG “we”, “our” or “us” means IMS.

WHO WILL BE PROVIDING THE FINANCIAL SERVICE TO YOU? The financial service will be provided by IMS. We are appointed as an authorised representative of Allianz Australia Insurance Limited (Allianz) to: • provide general advice on and arrange Home, Landlord, Car, Caravan and Trailer and Pleasure Craft insurance products; and • provide general advice on and refer customers to Allianz for Commercial insurance products. Allianz has authorised us to arrange and provide general advice on certain general insurance products issued by it. You may be provided with these financial services by: ꞏ one of our employees; or. ꞏ a person we have temporarily contracted with to provide these financial services to you, ꞏ Each of these persons will be authorised by Allianz to arrange and provide general advice on these insurance products as its authorised representative and to provide you with this FSG. They will tell you when this is the case.

WHO DO WE ACT FOR WHEN PROVIDING SERVICES? In arranging, referring and providing general advice on the above general insurance products, we and our employees act as an agent for Allianz. We may also refer you to Allianz to purchase insurance, where we do this and you purchase a policy, it will be arranged and issued by Allianz not us.

GENERAL ADVICE WARNING It is important that you understand and are happy with the products we and our representatives can arrange. We can give you general advice to help you decide but do not provide advice on this insurance based on any consideration of your objectives, financial situation or needs. Before making a decision about whether or not to purchase the product/s please carefully read the PDS to decide if it is right for you.

COMPENSATION ARRANGEMENTS We are required by Allianz to hold professional indemnity insurance. Allianz is a general insurer authorised under the Insurance Act 1973 (Cth) to carry on general insurance business in Australia and is supervised by the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA) and subject to the prudential requirements of the Insurance Act. Because of this, Allianz is exempted from the requirement to hold professional indemnity insurance. Please contact Allianz if you require further information in relation to their compensation arrangements.

WHAT REMUNERATIONS DO WE RECEIVE FOR OUR FINANCIAL SERVICES? We receive a commission from Allianz each time you buy, renew or vary a policy which is based on a percentage of the base premium (this is the premium less Goods and Services Tax (GST), stamp duty and any other government charges such as fire service levy (where applicable), taxes, fees or levies). We may receive a profit share from Allianz for Home and Contents (excluding flood), Landlord (excluding flood), Car and Caravan and Trailer insurance policies arranged by us (or renewed) with Allianz in each calendar year. If the agreed net earned premium threshold and the agreed profit threshold (determined according to a formula that takes into account matters such as the premium received, claims and expenses incurred) are met, we receive an agreed percentage of the profit which exceeds the agreed profit threshold. We also receive a marketing allowance from Allianz every two months. This is based on a percentage of the total gross written premium earned in the previous two months on Home and Contents (excluding flood), Landlord (excluding flood), Car and Caravan and Trailer insurance policies arranged by us (or renewed) with Allianz. We pay our sales employees an annual salary and they may also receive bonuses or other incentives and rewards based on their performance relating to sales of products and other business criteria. This does not affect the premium that any individual customer may pay. Where you have been provided with financial services by an employee who is an authorised representative, we may pay them all or part of our remuneration.

Where a third party has referred you to us, we may pay them an agreed percentage of our remuneration or an agreed amount for the referral as a commission or fee. Any such commission we pay to a referrer is at no extra cost to you. From time to time, we may participate in sales incentive schemes and Allianz may provide other benefits such as promotional items, financial assistance for promotion of its products, business related conferences, study trips or other functions. We may also be eligible to qualify for other benefits such as awards or hospitality events. These benefits are provided to us at no additional costs to you. If you would like more information about the remuneration that we receive, please ask us. This request should be made within a reasonable time after this FSG is provided to you and before the financial services are provided to you.

ASSOCIATIONS OR RELATIONSHIPS Allianz is a related body corporate of Club Marine Limited who issues and manages Pleasure Craft insurance on behalf of Allianz.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT? We are committed to handling complaints about our products and services efficiently and fairly. If you have a complaint, contact us and we will seek to resolve the issue. If we are unable to resolve your complaint, we will promptly refer it to Allianz. Allianz will attempt to resolve the matter in accordance with their Internal Dispute Resolution procedures. To obtain a copy of Allianz’ procedures contact us using the contact details on the first page of this document. If your complaint is not resolved to your satisfaction or your complaint has not been resolved within 30 days, the dispute can be referred to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) subject to its terms of reference.
