Safari Suits

The a-z of safari suits… and the best safari suits to buy.

Looking for a safari suit? Going on a safari is a fun experience, it allows you to explore a vast range of new locations, and it can be incredibly interesting too. The safari experience is fun, rewarding and you will find it very immersive. With that in mind, having the right safari suit is very important. It helps you avoid standing out to protect against predators, and it also makes it easy to stay away from the unwanted heat.

What is a safari suit?

At its core, this is a suit that will help you protect yourself against any potential challenges during a trip in the savanna. It’s a very good idea to have a safari suit because it protects you against any problems. You can pair a safari jacket with dedicated shorts or trousers and it will become a safari suit.

The main idea here is to have a suit that offers protection against many of the challenges that appear in the wilderness. There can be insect bites , predators attacking and so on. The safari suit is designed to be inconspicuous, so you can explore the region at your own pace without worrying about any possible problems that can appear.

What makes a great safari suit?

As we mentioned earlier, the best safari suit is the one that will not make you stand out. The main colors for this tend to be beige, brown, tan or khaki, although you can find some white safari suits too. The idea here is that you want to avoid any impact on the wildlife, instead you want to be camouflaged and experience the wildlife in its most natural format.

Bright colors will most likely make you stand out in the environment. When that happens, you end up scaring the animals, and that’s definitely something you must take into consideration as much as you can. If you would have safari suits that are blue for example or very dark, these will attract a lot of insects that carry yellow fever, dengue fever and malaria, among many others. That’s why specific coloring is very important because it will help you stay safe.

What kinds of safari suits are there?

You can have the standard safari jacket which has the traditional length, it comes with multiple pockets and it should fit perfectly. You also have the mid-length jacket which is shorter and that can be a bit easier to wear. If you want to traverse challenging territories, the bush jacket is very handy.

This one has a belt around the waist and it can have either a similar length or it can be longer when compared to other jackets.

Lastly, you have safari bomber jackets that are made out of polyester fabric. Most of these tend to have 4 path pockets, zippered front and an inside pocket. They are the most durable and dependable, but also the most expensive.

You can also get a safari vest if you want, this one is designed to offer the extra warmth and protection you may need. It also delivers extra pockets too, which is something you need to take into consideration as much as you can.

What to wear with a safari suit?

The upper garments would usually include a shirt under the jacket. Some people want a sleeveless option because it can get very hot. There’s also the option for long sleeves, depending on your own needs and requirements.

For the lower garments, you want to have either shorts or khaki trousers. Women can go for leggings if they want to. Long skirts can be a good idea too, since they offer added protection. When it comes to what footwear you need, you do want safari boots or hiking shoes. Slip on or closed shoes are ok too, but it’s better to go with boots or something that delivers an even better protection.

How to wear a safari suit?

Ideally, you want to use the safari suit when you go in a safari trip with a designated guide. You want to have a shirt, a jacket on top of it, safari trousers and proper shoes. You can adapt everything according to your own needs, and the results can be very interesting once you go down this route. You will be incredibly impressed with the value and results, and the experience is amazing because of it.

Do you need a safari hat?

Yes, normally you do, because there can be all kinds of hazards in the wilderness. A good safari hat needs to be waterproof, to provide you with proper coverage and it should help you fight against the UV rays. Obviously it needs to be comfortable and when it comes to material it can be cotton based, rubber or leather based.

Think about where you are going, this might require some changes to the safari suit

It’s important to know where and also when you are going on a safari. This will make it easy to identify the proper equipment you need. If you visit during the dry season, then the equipment above will do just fine. However, if you visit during the wet season, then you need to think about additional items that offer waterproofing and added protection. However, the colors need to stay the same for the most part, even if you visit during the rainy season.

The safari suits didn’t change that much over the past century. People have always been very excited to explore the wilderness, and the structure of a safari suit was very well prepared from the start. Granted, nowadays we are using different materials and the designs are a bit more modern, but the regular safari suits always had a thick jacket, durable pants, and high-quality shoes. It’s important to have the right equipment when you’re going into the jungle, so using the right tips and tricks will help you more than you imagine. Give these a try and remember to take all the little details into consideration as they can help save your life!

And that’s our take on safari suits. What do you think – any important information missing? Or perhaps you have a few safari suit tips of your own. Please let us know in the comments section below!

‘Revolutionary’ Suit Trend Shows The Epicentre Of Men’s Fashion Is Shifting For The Better

Europe, pay attention.

‘Revolutionary’ Suit Trend Shows The Epicentre Of Men’s Fashion Is Shifting For The Better

It used to be that any conversation about high fashion naturally gravitated towards Europe: the grand couturiers of France, the storied luxury houses of Italy, tailors on London’s Savile Row…

Europe might still be a fashion powerhouse, but it’s no longer the only word in men’s style. DMARGE recently conducted a reader survey about changing perceptions of luxury, and a whopping 80% of you agree that luxury doesn’t have to come from Europe. Just as we recognise that Europe’s not the sole domain of the finer things in life, so too do we observe that the hottest style trends are increasingly coming from places outside of the ‘Old World’.

One men’s style trend that’s being led by designers and snappy dressers outside of Europe is the revival of the leisure suit. While the first leisure suits originated in the 1930s on the US’ West Coast, it was in the 1960s and 1970s that leisure suits became particularly popular, and emerged the form we recognise them as today.

Taking on design cues from the utilitarian safari jacket, safari suits became fashionable thanks to French designers like Ted Lapidus and Yves Saint Laurent championing the look. The style was also picked up by the mod subculture in the UK, as well as by quintessential British men’s style icons of the era such as Roger Moore and the Prince of Wales. In recent years, it’s become somewhat kitsch; a shorthand for sleaze.

But the modern safari suit has far more salubrious and less European origins. Because leisure suits are an eminently practical, rather smart warm-weather option, well-dressed gents in Africa and South Asia have long championed the safari suit, further refining the style and transforming it from something to be mocked to a respectable smart-casual option. Now, Australians are paying attention – and Europe should, too.

Take Australian-founded, South-Africa based tailoring outfit Button Brothers’ leisure suit, which is “inspired by the powerful leaders of the Front Line States who fought for the liberty of many in Africa,” taking design cues from military fatigues worn by revolutionary freedom fighters whilst incorporating soft, breathable cotton.

Another Australian tailor that’s reinvigorating the leisure suit is Patrick Johnson . His take incorporates beautifully-textured linen and nods to the sorts of mountain jackets explorers in the Himalayas would regularly don during mountain expeditions – turning adventure gear into haute couture.

RELATED: Menswear Experts Explain What Will Happen To Australia’s Suit Culture If We Don’t Go Back To Work

For a different take on the leisure suit, one only has to look to US-based tailoring service Hangrr , whose leisure suits throwback to peak American preppy style: small pockets, slim tailoring and a double vent for maximum warm-weather comfort.

The revival of the leisure suit proves something that Australian luxury consumers have known intuitively for many years: that fashion’s epicentre is slowly shifting from Europe and expanding elsewhere. Keep an eye on this trend – and keep your eye out for other men’s style trends emerging outside of Europe.

Excellent fit

From the very start I was impressed with the range of customisation options from Hockerty. Took a few tries to get the measurements right, but their customer service was very helpful. They kept me informed about delays due to the COVID lockdown in Shanghai, and the final product when I received it, was beautiful. I\'m really pleased with this field jacket!

How to wear a Field Jacket

How to wear a Field Jacket

The field jacket design crossed over from the military zones and into the fashion world thanks in large part to designer Yves Saint Laurent. The legendary designer brought the military and safari-inspired style to fame in the sixties. The style was a big success and became a huge trend. It was then further popularized by both stylish Hollywood leading men and big-screen characters, including James Bond.

What is a safari jacket?

Check again the image, but by definition, a safari jacket is a lightweight poplin fabric spring-summer jacket usually beige or khaki and plenty of pockets and details such as epaulettes. But you are lucky because at Hockerty you can design your men's safari jacket the way you want.

What do you wear with a safari jacket?

Safari jackets are not just made to be worn in Africa. You can wear your safari jacket with any smart casual attire. Combine it with jeans, chinos, slacks or even suit pants. It will provide a relaxed feeling to your look.

Lightweight safari jacket

Safari Jackets need to be lightweight so they are not too warm and help you feel comfortable once the cold gets away. Your summer evenings will get automatically extended thanks to your men's bush jacket.

Green safari jacket

The second most popular safari jackets are the green ones. Men's green safari jackets have a military touch and they combine perfectly with jeans and brown dress shoes or boots.

Black safari jacket

Why not? Especially when your safari jacket is meant to be worn at night. You need a spring-summer jacket to go back home really late.

Is a bush jacket a safari jacket?

Short answer: yes. Yes, a bush jacket is a type of safari jacket. Both jackets are lightweight and breathable, making them ideal for outdoor activities. The main difference is that bush jackets are typically made of heavier fabric and have more pockets for practicality. When it comes to fashion, bush jackets offer a rugged and adventurous look that is perfect for the modern explorer.

Why The Safari Jacket Is 2024’s Most Stylish And Practical Menswear Item

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

It’s the badass outerwear of choice for style icons like Ernest Hemingway and Clint Eastwood, one that historically was less about dressing for dinner, rather about catching it. And yet, the safari jacket still divides.

That’s because get it right, and you look straight-from-the-fridge cool. But get it wrong, and you look the part of the Great White Hunter. Get it right, and you look Burt Reynolds-level macho. Get it wrong, and you just look plain awkward. But, ask any menswear expert, and they’ll soon tell you it’s worth the risk.

Never mind the practical benefits – room to carry your stuff; light enough to wear all summer. The safari jacket is a design classic, whether you’re in the real thing or one of fashion’s many interpretations, and it may just be the only cool jacket you need for the balmier months.

What Is A Safari Jacket?

Take the practicality of the military style field jacket – a tough cotton or cotton-blend fabric formed into a loose-fitting, mid-length garment with four bellows pockets at the chest and hip. Now do it in a more general purpose shade of beige, in a lighter-weight, breathable fabric like linen or cotton drill and add details such as an open neck, epaulettes and a belt to keep everything pulled together and in order.

There you have it: the safari jacket – a kind of field-meets-shooting jacket, substantial enough to wear a layer underneath, insubstantial enough to wear next to the skin or for the sleeves to be easily rolled ready to go hunting in, even if that’s just for the next bar.

Why You Need A Safari Jacket Today

Saint Laurent, which is credited with thrusting the style into the mainstream, famously still offers one, of course. But there’s a good reason why designers including Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, and brands like Abercrombie and Barbour have versions too. It just works. When it’s too hot for a proper jacket, but the event calls for something smarter than just a shirt, the safari jacket – functional in the outback, smart in a more urban jungle setting – works.

“The safari jacket is bittersweet – it can look like you’re wearing a costume, but the fact is that it’s great for the summer,” says Gieves & Hawkes creative director John Harrison. “They make quite a statement, but they really do the job.”

What’s more, it’s not a capital ‘F’ fashion piece either. That doesn’t mean a good quality example won’t be wearable for years to come. Just think khaki, cotton, classic. Its versatility is well documented, and it’s the ideal accompaniment to selvedge denim or, when the occasion calls, sharp tailoring. In short, it’s the ultimate trophy piece.

Safari Jacket Style Tips

Don’t overdo it.

The safari jacket is designed to be the star of the show, so allow it to take over, and avoid wearing anything else that attempts to compete with it for attention. If in doubt, muted basics are the order of the day, so throw it over a simple T-shirt and foot with dark denim and minimalist sneakers.

Aim High or Low

Much like other pieces in the menswear hall of fame, it’s possible to dress the safari jacket both up and down. Whether you wear it over a shirt, knitted tie and dark flannel trousers to appear smart or with white jeans and deck shoes for a Riviera feel, try leaving the jacket open but tying the belt across the middle for a nonchalant look.

Re-appropriate It

Unless en route to a fancy dress a party, don’t attempt the all-out utility look. If you’re wearing a safari jacket, avoid also wearing khakis, combat pants, or bush hat. It’s important to re-appropriate the safari jacket from its original setting as an upscale piece to avoid looking like someone who’s lost his shotgun.

Play Around With Fabric

The safari jacket is made by its pattern, but different materials can provide different effects. Linen ages well, making for a jacket that will take on a timeworn look; suede has more of an eveningwear feel, so works well for guys with a smarter wardrobe; while options in leather offer added insulation during colder months.

Leave The Bag At Home

In its infancy, the pocket on a safari jacket would be used to carry ammo, batteries for the GPS, a flask and likely a pipe. Though most modern men have little need for these in everyday life, it’s still possible to use the jacket as intended and leave the backpack at home.

Known for its robust outerwear, British brand Private White V.C. specialises in stylish yet functional designs. This prime example is a minimalistic take on the safari jacket. Gone are the shoulder epaulettes and belt; replaced by pared-down pockets with discrete poppers, a shorter length and a hidden placket, giving it a smarter overall feel.

Anderson & Sheppard

Given that it occupies a space on Savile Row , Anderson & Sheppard is best known for its exemplary tailoring. However, the heritage firm also produces a fine take on the safari jacket. Made from military-esque cotton drill and coming with 15 pockets as standard – including two iPad-sized interior pockets – it’s perhaps the handiest garment you could own. Forget luggage, just get yourself one of these.

Saint Laurent

Sure, because of its butter-soft lambskin construction and silk lining, the all-leather ‘Saharienne’ jacket by Saint Laurent would be useless in an actual safari – but just look at it. An ultra luxurious take on the design Yves himself backed in the 1960s, this is the French label at its best: classic, louche and incredibly desirable.

Marks & Spencer

Trust Marks & Spencer to come up with a safari jacket that both ticks all the design boxes and doesn’t offend your wallet. The British high street retailer has put its own spin on the classic piece, choosing to forgo the belt and instead add a couple of buttoned rear vents. So, whether you mount a horse in the desert or a motorcycle in the city, your jacket won’t scrunch up when you sit down.

Sitting somewhere in between Barbour’s signature waxed outerwear and the British brand’s motorcycle styles, this four pocket cotton design is an ideal modern update on the safari jacket. The drawstring waist provides a customisable fit, while a zip-and-button closure, coupled with a buttoned throat latch ensure that when the weather turns sour, it’ll be a useful ally.

The History Of The Safari Jacket

Picture the late 19th-century British soldiers of the Boer War, tramping across the plains of South Africa, unable to find their enemy – engaged as they were in this new, ungentlemanly form of warfare known as ‘guerilla’. Of course, it didn’t help that the British soldiers wore tunics in red, and the Afrikaners – appreciating the advantage of blending into the landscape – wore khaki.

Officers in British high command thought they were on to something – and shortly after came the first British military dress to make a step towards the palette of beiges, dun browns, and olive drabs still used today. The resulting attire – a four-pocket field jacket in khaki – would by turns be adopted by hunters, who likewise needed to be less visible to their prey.

Indeed, the so-called safari jacket was born, and it would remain a specialist item – worn by hunters and trackers including diehard-killers-of-anything-that-moved Ernest Hemingway and Teddy Roosevelt. Although versions of the safari jacket were re-adopted for both the British and German forces fighting in Africa during World War Two, it was typically only worn on safari and would have looked mightily out of place anywhere else up until the mid-1950s.

This was an idea underscored by Hollywood. From the 1930s, the film machine decided the perceived exoticism of the Great Continent was ripe for the next spate of romantic, action-packed movies, with the likes of Clark Gable donning safari jackets on screen. Out came The Road to Zanzibar (1941), Mogambo (1953), Safari (1956), Hatari! (1962), onwards to the likes of Clint Eastwood in White Hunter Black Heart (1990) – by which time the safari jacket had arguably lapsed into ‘central casting’ territory.

Clark Gable wearing a safari jacket

But not before making its forays into fashion. In the movies – especially during that busy run of the 1960s – the safari jacket was typically worn with plenty of dust and sweat, perhaps a rakish neckerchief, baggy shorts, and maybe a pith helmet. Take away the perspiration, however, and the safari jacket was recognized for its practicality for city life.

In India – inspired by the climate again – it became the local answer to the business suit. This was in part why Roger Moore wore a safari jacket in Octopussy (1983), partly set as it is in India. But then Moore, as James Bond, also wore one for the scenes of the private island of The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Moonraker (1979).

But then Moore, or his wardrobe team, was ahead of the times: he wore a safari jacket in ‘The Saint’. This wasn’t just before Bond, it was before the other Saint too. It was the designers Ted Lapidus and Yves Saint Laurent who really gave the safari jacket a fashion overhaul.

The former introduced his take on the jacket in the mid-1960s, while the latter seemingly stole all the glory – or just got the timing right – after first showing his take on it in 1967, though it was a one-off made for a Vogue story on him the following year that made it a cult item for the times. And it’s never looked back since.

American Dream sued by woman who says she was injured by motorized stuffed animal ride

safari suit american

You may have seen those large motorized stuffed animals that kids and parents ride through some parts of the American Dream mall. They include plushy zebras, elephants tigers and hippos.

An elderly woman is suing the East Rutherford mega-mall and ride operator, alleging she was struck and seriously injured by those animals.

It marks the latest legal trouble for the beleaguered retail and entertainment complex in the Meadowlands. Those legal woes range from a broken leg to slip-and-falls, knocked-out teeth, unpaid construction bills and defaults on a multimillion-dollar loan.

The mammoth entertainment complex, operated by Canadian developer Triple Five, has added an indoor ski slope , a 300-foot Ferris wheel with dramatic views of Manhattan, an ice-skating rink, an amusement park and a water park, among other attractions.

In this latest suit, Shirley, New York, resident Trinidad Javier alleges that the mall and the operators of these rides, called Dream Riders, failed to follow the proper safety protocols that could have prevented her injury.

As a result, the lawsuit says, Javier sustained injuries to her spine during the Jan. 13 incident and had to undergo surgery. She’s seeking damages for “conscious pain and suffering, physical disability, emotional trauma, loss of enjoyment of life” and “economic loss,” the suit reads.

The suit alleges that the ride operator, the mall and its owners failed to provide a specified area where mall patrons could walk without danger of being struck by these rides, and a specified area where the rides could be operated.

It also says the defendants failed to ensure that children operating the rides were adequately supervised. The Dream Riders were able to be operated at a “dangerous and excessive speed,” according to the suit.

“They can travel faster than somebody can walk,” said Javier’s attorney, Mark A. Apostolos, from the Hackensack law firm Sullivan Papain Block McManus Coffinas & Cannavo.

“It’s their responsibility to make sure that when people walk into the mall, they’re provided a safe place to walk,” Apostolos continued. “So it’s up to them if they want to make it safe or not.”

A spokesperson for the mall did not immediately comment. Dream Riders did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Headaches for American Dream

“Since their inception, people have suffered injuries in amusement parks and people have sued for their injuries,” Solangel Maldonado, a professor at Seton Hall Law School, said last year.

Maldonado noted that injuries at a theme park, especially one that is open all year, are to be expected.

“Injuries are just something that happens at amusement parks,” Maldonado said.

In February 2023, a decorative helicopter at the DreamWorks Water Park fell from the ceiling and injured four patrons, though no legal action has been filed. Last summer, cleaners at the mall allege they were fired for trying to organize a union .

American Dream’s losses quadrupled in one year , according to a Bloomberg report and a securities filing released in September 2023, from $60 million to $245 million.

Sales slowed in the final three months of 2023, which included the often-busy holiday shopping season, another Bloomberg report said.

The venue was 86% leased as of Dec. 31, 2023, public records show. In 2022, NorthJersey.com reported that the mall owed at least $9 million in negotiated payments to a total of 14 towns in the region. Local officials said those payments were due when the mall opened its theme park in October 2019.

But the officials said the megamall wasn’t making the payments, with the mall allegedly arguing that it was not on the hook for those payments because the mall wasn’t 100% leased and was not technically fully open. Officials including East Rutherford Mayor Jeffrey Lahullier questioned whether the mall would ever be at 100%.

The lawsuits and failure to pay debts “has the effect of buying them time, which gives them the opportunity to renegotiate things” more in the mall owners’ favor, said Marc Pfeiffer, assistant director at Rutgers University's Bloustein local government research center.

The U.S. bans most common form of asbestos, after decades of pushback from industry

An asbestos warning sign is seen at Victoria Park in in Sydney, Australia on February 29, 2024.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday that it is banning the most common form of asbestos, a cancer-causing substance that's linked to the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans every year.

The U.S. is prohibiting the use of chrysotile asbestos, joining more than 50 other countries that have already outlawed the substance. The ban comes after decades of pushback from companies that have used it in everything from consumer goods to manufacturing processes.

"The science is clear – asbestos is a known carcinogen that has severe impacts on public health," EPA administrator Michael Regan said in a statement . "This action is just the beginning as we work to protect all American families, workers, and communities from toxic chemicals."

People who inhale the tiny fibrous strands that make up asbestos can develop a slew of illnesses , including lung and ovarian cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. More than 40,000 deaths in the U.S. each year are connected to asbestos exposure.

Most consumer products that once contained the substance in the past no longer do, such as building materials and household appliances.

But the EPA's ban targets certain products that still carry asbestos, including some gaskets and aftermarket automotive products. It also phases out the use of asbestos diaphragms by the chlor-alkali industry, which produces various chemicals.

Arthur Frank, a professor of environmental and occupational health at Drexel University, said the rule doesn't outlaw all forms of asbestos, and the substance still lurks in many existing buildings and products across the country.

"This is not a total ban by any means," Frank said. "It is a modest step that reduces future exposures."

Why it's taken so long for the EPA to outlaw asbestos

Federal regulators said Monday that the ban was the first rule to be finalized under the updated Toxic Substances Control Act, the national chemical safety law that was overhauled in 2016.

Previous attempts to prohibit the use of asbestos fell flat.

The EPA tried to ban asbestos outright in the late 1980s, but companies fought back. When the agency announced its 1989 prohibition on the use of asbestos, there was a carve-out for the chlorine industry.

Asbestos Deaths Remain A Public Health Concern, CDC Finds

Asbestos deaths remain a public health concern, cdc finds.

Then, two years later, a panel of federal judges deemed the rule too onerous and overturned it, scuttling for decades any additional attempts by the EPA to ban asbestos and other dangerous chemicals.

"An immediate ban on the import of chrysotile asbestos for the chlor-alkali industry is a long overdue step forward for public health," Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., said in a statement. "However, it cannot be the end of the road when it comes to phasing out other dangerous asbestos fibers, and Congress has a role to play here when it comes to providing stronger protections for our health."

What this ban will do

Though the use of asbestos in the U.S. has been on the wane, it hasn't vanished altogether.

The chlor-alkali industry uses large filters containing asbestos called diaphragms to make chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and chlorine, which can be used to disinfect drinking water and wastewater.

The EPA is immediately banning the import of chrysotile asbestos for the industry and requiring the eight chlor-alkali plants in the U.S. still using asbestos diaphragms to phase out their use.

Asbestos isn't required to produce chlorine, the agency noted, and two-thirds of the chlorine made in the U.S. is done so without the use of asbestos.

Producers will have five years to transition from using asbestos diaphragms to ones that don't contain the substance. Those that shift from asbestos diaphragms to non-asbestos membrane technology will have five years to convert their first facility, eight years to convert their second and 12 years to convert their third.

The ban also prohibits the use of asbestos in certain products. Oilfield brake blocks, aftermarket automotive brakes and linings, and other vehicle friction products and gaskets will be barred from containing asbestos six months after the rule's effective date.

Sheet gaskets containing asbestos will also be outlawed two years after the effective date of the rule , though there will be exceptions when it's used to make titanium dioxide or for the disposal of nuclear material.

U.s. v. apple lawsuit could affect american competition and innovation.

The Department of Justice (joined by 15 states and the District of Columbia) sued Apple in federal court on Thursday, claiming the company has illegally monopolized the U.S. smartphone market. The case, however, transcends antitrust policy and has big implications for American Capitalism and competition.

The lawsuit, which could drag on for years, has a low probability of success. At the heart of the plaintiffs’ case is that “Apple has consolidated its monopoly power not by making its own products better—but by making other products worse,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in a statement yesterday. What the case overlooks, however, is that Apple consumers choose to pay a premium for iPhones because they find them to be superior products.

Apple instantly pushed back against the case . “If successful, it would hinder our ability to create the kind of technology people expect from Apple—where hardware, software, and services intersect. It would also set a dangerous precedent, empowering government to take a heavy hand in designing people’s technology.”

The case’s real significance is that it could stifle innovation by one of America’s premier high-tech companies. This in turn would tend to undermine dynamic competition and harm United States economic growth. It would also weaken the U.S. in its strategic competition with China for leadership in the digital technology sectors that will drive the global economy.

The Apple Complaint Is In Tension With U.S. Antitrust Principles

DOJ asserts that Apple has disincentivized iPhone customers from switching to other smartphones by preventing the growth of “super apps” that can be used on different smartphone platforms. DOJ also claims that Apple has blocked the development of cloud streaming services that can be used without expensive smartphone hardware; has degraded the quality of messaging with non-Apple smartphones; has designed the Apple watch to work best with iPhones; and has designed its “Apple wallet” service to inhibit the creation of “cross-platform” digital wallets.

Google Suddenly Reveals Surprise Android Update That Beats iPhone

The gentlemen dethroned in netflix s top 10 list by a new show, ios 17 4 1 update now warning issued to all iphone users.

In essence, DOJ’s complaint is that Apple should have cooperated with its rivals to “open up” its iPhone platform and create greater compatibility between iPhones and rival Android-base phones. This poses problems for DOJ under U.S. antitrust case law dealing with illegal monopolization.

To succeed in its argument, DOJ will have to show that Apple’s course of conduct has no explanation apart from an effort to harm competition.

Apple, which said it believes the “lawsuit is wrong on the facts and the law” and promised to “vigorously defend against it,” will undoubtedly explain that its actions are all aimed at creating a curated experience for customers with enhanced security, conferring major benefits on Apple consumers—and a major economic efficiency. Such actions are not “exclusionary” in the antitrust sense, and thus there is no monopolization or attempted monopolization under Sherman Act Section 2, which bars such practices.

The U.S. Supreme Court has long held that the Sherman Act’s touchstone is promoting consumer welfare. Apple could easily argue that its actions benefit Apple consumers. That they’re willing to pay far more for iPhones than for Android phones indicates that they value them far more. Interfering with Apple’s practices that create this value would harm Apple consumers, make iPhones more like Android phones and degrade dynamic competition, Apple could maintain.

Specifically, Apple could argue that the very features limiting platform interoperability complained of by DOJ are those that enhance system security and create added value for iPhone customers. It could also note that the rapid growth of the Apple app store has created opportunities for software developers, benefiting many new businesses as well as consumers.

DOJ emphasized when filing the suit that Apple uses privacy and security claims as an “elastic shield” and imposes a 30% “tax” on apps downloaded from the App stores and on in-app purchases. Apple might well counter that Apple consumers (who, of course, interact with its App Store) are more satisfied than consumers of its competitors, as reflected in the booming revenue of its small App Store developers. Moreover, Apple might stress that, as pointed out by Insight Partners , 30% is “actually comparable to the fees charged by similar platforms like the Google Play store.” This suggests that Apple is merely engaged in sound welfare-enhancing business practices, rather than monopolistic exploitation.

While some Android customers might prefer better access to messages sent by iPhones or to a few other iPhone features (amenities they are not currently willing to pay for), Apple is not legally required to provide such access. The Supreme Court has held that even a monopolist has no general antitrust duty to assist its competitors. (This reflects U.S. antitrust doctrine that antitrust laws protect the competitive process for the benefit of consumers, not the fortunes of any particular competitor.)

Moreover, requiring Apple to open its platform more to Android users would diminish the quality-based competition between Apple and Android phone makers. Apple would have a reduced incentive to invest in enhancing the quality available only to its customers, thus making them worse off in the future.

Regardless of the details spelled out in the case, DOJ’s assertion that Apple is a monopolist in U.S. smartphones, which is necessary for a successful prosecution, may be questionable, in light of revenue statistics compiled by Backlink.com .

Android phones (many of them made by giant multinationals like Samsung) accounted for between 69% and 75% of the global smartphone market share during the 2016 to 2023 period. Over the same time frame, iPhone shares fluctuated in the 19% to 29% range—hardly the mark of a dominant firm, let alone a monopolist.

The suit points out that Apple’s share of the U.S. smartphone market (the relevant market, according to DOJ) exceeds 65%. Notably, however, iPhone shares fell in the 53% to 59% range between 2016 and 2023, while Android shares fluctuated from roughly 41% to 45%. There is no showing that Android is rapidly losing ground and about to be minimized. Apple obviously is not the global market leader.

Moreover, Apple could claim that it is not a monopolist in the U.S., merely a very successful competitor in the smartphone market whose share merely reflects American consumers’ preference for its curated quality features and its high security.

The Big Picture Implications Of The Apple Case

In short, Apple’s legal position is very strong. Nevertheless, it is not unassailable. DOJ may be expected to devote major resources to the case, and the Apple prosecution is likely to drag on for several years, including possible appeals (par for the course in big monopolization cases). This will subject the company to costly legal uncertainty.

During that time, Apple management might “pull its competitive punches” and invest less in improving the iPhone system, to the detriment of its customers and dynamic competition with Android. Furthermore, to the extent litigation risks reduce Apple’s market capitalization below what it otherwise would have been, Apple may invest less in key technologies of the future, including AI and cloud computing.

Even if DOJ somehow were to win after many years, the relief it obtained—an injunction covering the many practices (and possibly others) alluded to in DOJ’s complaint—would be virtually impossible to administer by a court. This would lead to constant haggling and litigation over whether future actions by Apple fell within the decree, thereby hobbling Apple and diminishing its future innovation.

In any event, whoever eventually wins the Apple case, the likely loser is the competitiveness of the American digital high-tech sector and the U.S. economy.

With this lawsuit, the U.S. is following the example of the European Union, in its effort to micromanage digital competition and hobble major American competitors, including, of course, Apple. The EU has produced no leading platforms and very little real innovation in the digital sector, unlike the U.S. One questions whether the U.S. government would want to emulate that experience.

Most significantly, the Apple lawsuit also weakens the competitive position of the U.S. digital sector vis-à-vis China, a result counter to American strategic interests.

A recent Competitive Enterprise Institute study by Joseph Sullivan explains how antitrust lawsuits against American tech-sector leaders harm innovation in cutting-edge sectors such as AI. Such suits could also have a “potentially destructive” impact on U.S. national security interests, according to Loren Thompson, writing in Forbes , who stresses that emerging technologies identified by the Defense Department “as top priorities for the future are software-driven, commercial innovations.”

Might there be any upsides to DOJ’s lawsuit? Any potential positives that could come from the case, such as reduced iPhone prices and more flexible access to the iPhone platform and its App Store, would likely be accompanied by corresponding negatives, such as lower quality iPhones and reduced incentives for smartphone innovation.

In sum, there is a real risk that the DOJ Apple lawsuit may undermine U.S. global innovation, economic and national security interests, without yielding significant pro-competitive benefits.

There are more than 20 towns in America called Moscow. Why is that?

  • By Alina Simone Jared Goyette

When Jack Spaulding was growing up in Moscow, Tennessee, he always wondered how the town, a small, rural community of about 80 residents, got its name. It didn’t seem to have any obvious connection with Russia, but could any of the local tales he’d heard actually be true?

“I would ask all the old folks here in town if anybody knew how the town got its name. Well, I got all these hokey answers like, ‘Well, it's because of the moss and... they used to send the cows down there to graze on the moss. Moss cow. And then after that Ma's cow — like, belonging to your mother's. ... Nobody really had any idea where the name came about,” Spaulding says.

Spaulding eventually dug deeper, and his research turned up an unexpected finding: The area had been known as something like “Moscow” since before the town was founded in the early 1800s. That clue led him in a new direction.

“I went through the dictionary looking for any type of word that would sound similar to Moscow or would be spoken by Europeans like 'Moscow' and I believe as I recall, the word closest to that was Mashetow," he says.

According to Spaulding, Mashetow was a Native American word meaning "to go" or "the place to where we're going."

"I think Moscow was the place to where the Native Americans would go for the watering ground. ... What is this place? Mashetow! This is the place we're going.”

Spaulding’s conclusion wasn’t definitive, but it was a worthy effort. He isn’t the only person to set out trying to figure out why a small town in the middle of America acquired the same name as the capital of Russia. There are more than 20 identically named cities scattered across the country. There’s a Moscow in Idaho near the border with Washington, another up north in Maine and one down south in Texas.

When Ren Vasilyev, now a professor of geography at the State University of New York Geneseo, was a graduate student, she decided to tackle the riddle of America’s many Moscows. It was 1986, the height of the Cold War battle with the Moscow-capitaled Soviet Union, and in those misty pre-Internet days, a project like this required a lot of analog legwork.

She poured through old county history books, and found that just as with Spaulding's hometown, most of the Moscows in America didn’t have anything to do with Russia or its capital.

One was the result of a misunderstanding: Moscow, Kansas. Town officials had tried to name their city after Luis de Moscoso, a Spanish conquistador, but they decided to shorten the name to M-O-S-C-O. When they submitted an application to create a post office, it came back with the extra letter.

“The guy in DC thought that these little silly people in Kansas didn't know what they were doing and had spelled the name wrong. So he had added that W on it,” Vasilyev says.

But, the most common reason people named their community Moscow, she learned, was more straightforward.

“Things like Spring Valley or Springfield or Blossom Hill, or you know, those kind of pretty generic names were already taken. And so people started using what were considered exotic names, hoping that no one had already used them,” she says.

The fire department in Moscow, Michigan.

The mystery of the Moscows of America also intrigued Erjan Aisabay, who set out to visit all of them and write a book about his experience. Aisabay, who was born in Kazakhstan but attended college in the original Moscow, launched his project hoping that America’s shared love of Russia’s capital city might help bring the two countries together.

But as Aisabay drove from state to state, his dream of finding a Russian connection dwindled. And some of America’s Muscovites turned out to be less than supportive. Like in Moscow, Texas, where his attempt to strike up a conversation didn’t turn out as planned.

“I say, 'Hi my name is so and so, you know I'm writing a book about Moscows' and then you know she looks at me like completely mistrust and she's like 'You should leave.' ... And I saw something that looked like a gun. ... This was my last Moscow and I'm like, 'I don't want to die in my last Moscow!'”

LONDON (AP) — It’ll likely take years before the U.S. government’s massive antitrust lawsuit against Apple is resolved — but the iPhone maker’s troubles with European regulators offer a glimpse of what changes American customers may see down the line.

The U.S. lawsuit seeks to stop Apple from undermining technologies that compete with its own apps in areas such as streaming, messaging and digital payments. The Department of Justice also wants to prevent the tech giant from building language into its contracts with developers, accessory makers and consumers that lets it obtain or keep a monopoly.

These are similar to themes that the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm and top antitrust enforcer, and Apple have been wrangling over for years.

EU antitrust watchdogs have launched multiple antitrust cases accusing Apple of violating the 27-nation bloc’s competition laws, while also imposing tough digital rules aimed at stopping tech companies from cornering digital markets.

Brussels’ efforts will soon start to have an impact on the way the company does business and the experience iPhone users have in Europe. And the changes could signal what’s to come for U.S. Apple users — if the Justice Department has its way, at least.

Here’s a closer look:

MUSIC STREAMING

Music streaming users typically weren’t able to pay for their Spotify subscriptions directly through their iPhone apps. They couldn’t even be informed by email of subscription prices, promos and offers by Spotify or other music streaming services. That’s because Apple puts tight restrictions on apps that compete with its own Apple Music service.

But when Spotify complained to the European Union , antitrust regulators opened a yearslong investigation that resulted in an order for Apple to stop such behavior and came with a whopping 1.8 billion euro ($2 billion) fine aimed at deterring the company from doing it again.

Margrethe Vestager, the European Commission’s competition chief, said Apple’s practices were “illegal” and “impacted millions of European consumers who were not able to make a free choice as to where, how and at what price to buy music streaming subscriptions.”

Apple tried to resolve a second EU antitrust case by proposing to let third party mobile wallet and payment service providers access the tap and go payment function on its iOS operating system.

Apple offered the concession to the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm and top antitrust enforcer, after it accused the company in 2022 of abusing its dominant position by limiting access to its mobile payment technology.

The commission had been examining whether Apple Pay’s rules require online shops to make it the preferred or default option, effectively shutting out rival payment systems. It had also been investigating concerns that it limits access for rival payment systems to the contactless payment function on iPhones.

The commission is still mulling the offer. It has been seeking feedback from “interested parties” on the proposals before making a decision on the case.

Apple has long maintained that there can be only one app marketplace — its own — on iPhones and other iOS devices. But a sweeping set of new EU regulations that recently took effect has forced the company to open up its so-called “walled garden” and allow third-party app stores to compete.

The EU’s Digital Markets Act is a broad rulebook that targets Big Tech “gatekeeper” companies with a set of do’s and don’ts that they’ll have to abide by. One of its goals is to break up closed tech ecosystems that lock consumers into one company’s products or services.

Under the DMA, tech companies won’t be able to stop consumers from connecting with businesses outside their platforms. So Apple has been forced to allow people in Europe to download iPhone apps from stores not operated by the U.S. tech giant — a move it’s long resisted.

In a sign of that reluctance, EU regulators said they wanted to question Apple over accusations that it blocked video game company Epic Games from setting up its own app store. But Apple later reversed course and cleared the way for Fortnite maker Epic to set up its rival app store.
