I have see that you point out 10 of the Best African Safari Tour Operators that is Great but there is another company that deserves space in the top 10 – Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris ltd, website https://www.footslopestours.com/ They organize the best private custom safari, honeymoon, Kilimanjaro climbing, hiking and trekking mountain family holidays in Tanzania. They have experienced safari guides and staffs are best in the industry.

' src=

In essence it’s a tough pick for the best safari companies as best is relative and times change. Moreover, companies evolve for better and unfortunately others for worse. There are also local based companies that have competence and overall good service.

Check out https://www.alphadeantoursandsafaris.com/ as well as https://www.africamagicalsafaris.com/index.php

' src=

It would also be nice to consider Kenya-based safari companies like Explorer Kenya Tours and Travel for honeymooners safaris, photography safaris and Kenya wildlife safaris. See them on http://www.explorerkenya.com .

' src=

This is not a definitive, or updated list of the world’s ”best” safari companies. I think A&K should surely make the proper list, along with & Beyond. But someone has rightfully pointed out that these companies are quite expensive. A few years ago, I enjoyed a fabulous African Safari in Kenya with Shoor Safaris ( http://www.shoortravel.com/ ) at much cheaper rates using the same properties I was being offered by a top US operator. So do shop around and book wisely.

' src=

Thanks for your comment Carol. Sure, it’s not a “definitive” list. At the end of the day, it all depends on what YOU’re looking for. Choose wisely and “safari njema”! 😉

' src=

Based on the dates you posted the article, that was true but now things have really changed. Those tour companies that are not keeping up with the advancement of technology especially online marketing are being overtaken by smaller operators who have invested heavily in online marketing.

' src=

Most of the companies listed above are very expensive. I found a newer tour operator based in the US that runs their trips out of an office in Tanzania. They where almost half the price of the quote I got from Micato and 35% less than Thomsons. Our trip was great. I guess that the others charge more because they have a name. Anyway, check them out and see if they can do your trip cheaper http://www.etripafrica.com .

Good Safari.

' src=

I have gone through the list of safari companies listed and while it is true that they do offer great services, I am not sure that they are the top 10. There are a number of companies operating regionally and internationally that offer just as good or better services.

Another thing is there are some good companies who have had their names sullied by one disgruntled client over the most minor issue. Tour guides are humans and something like a flat tire is something that is sometimes unavoidable. However, some clients since they book these tours way in advance a few things could have happened in the months leading up to the safari making them wish they hadn’t booked. Take the world economic crisis, a client books his safari one or two years in advance only to lose a job. So reviews by clients should be taken in totality not from one disgruntled client.

' src=

Hello Michael.

I have seen the list of the top 10 safari companies doing safaris in Africa. In Uganda you have listed Volcanoes only. There is another company that deserves space in the top 10 – Advantage Safaris ltd, website http://www.advantage-safaris.com . They organize the best birdwatching, gorilla tracking, chimpanzee tracking and family holidays in both Uganda and Rwanda. The guides and safari drivers employed by Advantage Safaris ltd are the best in the industry.

' src=

All safari goers should be a little wary of the ‘group style’ safaris on offer. Remember that you are trying to get close to wildlife and be sensitive as well as be educated. Larger groups, of say 16 people or more, in numerous vehicles can find this a little difficult. Large groups are often led by ‘an expert’ with driver/guides in the other vehicles. Whilst this keeps the cost per head down some the overall ‘life time experience ‘ can get a little diluted by sharing one so called ‘expert’ between 16-20 group members.

Tanzania is a wonderful safari destination but you cannot beat a small group of up to 8 visitors being guided by two excellent guides in two well equipped vehicles. Guides that know the back roads and want to explore.

Camp in remote locations, don’t be surrounded by cement in a lodge. It costs more but these basic rules can get a visitor closer to that dream vacation.

' src=

I agree that it is impossible to limit the world’s best safari companies down to a list of 10, especially when each safari company is focused on a different region and/or type of trip (adventure, family, honeymoon, luxury, etc.). In many cases it’s like comparing apples and oranges.

' src=

Thanks for the feedback, you definitely have a point here. Of course, they can't possibly make a "real" top 10 out of the thousands of safari companies out there. But then again, how would you do it? Did you check out their methodology? Basically, it is based on surveys that follow specific categories: education, sustainability, quality of service and spirit of adventure.

About the "trip of a lifetime" experience. This goal should always be on top of the list, totally agree with you. The question is: are they all going for it? I don't think so. I have read a few stories where people were really not well catered for. In my opinion, there are always companies out there that are looking for a quick buck no matter what… even if it has to be at the expense of their clients.

Not quite sure what you're trying to imply about the recession bit. Did you read that? Possible but am not aware of it.

' src=

Hello Michael,

Interesting topic that is being discussed here. I must say though that the premise of NG a bit of an awkward one is. 'Delivering a trip of a lifetime the first time'?? In my opinion a safari outfitter should ALWAYS try to achieve this goal the first time. Now NG suggests that there are a number of operators out there that are not doing their utmost to accommodate clients the first time and that they will only do so in times of recession.

I therefore dare to say that this survey is absolute nonsense, as NG will not have the possibility to survey 100's of operators. Why? Because they have other things to do than being a consumer watchdog on safaris. I am not implying that the mentioned companies are no good, I am just saying that out of all the thousands of companies selling safaris, you can not just make a list of 10.

What do you think yourself Michael?

Cheers from Holland.

Why choose Safari and Company?

For your next vacation choose the specialists in every aspect of travel to africa. founder michael haines was raised and schooled in zimbabwe. he has guided safaris to zimbabwe, zambia, namibia, south africa, tanzania, kenya, botswana, zanzibar island and rwanda. mike knows africa., what people have to say, "the envy of all other guests".

Botswana was incredible and a great recommendation. The combination of Gomoti, Jacana and Savuti provided a perfect balance... The camps were exactly what we were looking for and the game viewing was extraordinary. We did three full rounds of the 'Big 5' (three rhinos, five leopards and far too many of the other 3 to keep track of) and saw so many other species of mammals, birds and reptiles - (we did take over 2,500 photos and many videos.) The combination of the four camps and our experiences were the envy of all other guests we met - it was a perfect itinerary. All to say you could not have put together a better itinerary for Jeanette and me. Thank you very, very much.

8 Tips To Research & Choose The Right Safari Company

How to find the right safari tour company for you.

Even as an independent traveler there are times when you have to go on an organized tour, and going on safari tends to be one of those times. Picking the right safari company is perhaps the most important factor in having a good safari.

Competition amongst safari operators is fierce –  at both the top and bottom ends of the market. It’s worth remembering that you get what you pay for; some disreputable companies may enter parks without paying fees, or use standard minibus drivers as guides, vehicles that aren’t road-worthy, or will serve you inedible food. Here are our 8 top tips for choosing the right safari operator for your safari:

1. Do your research before arriving in Africa. Ask around friends and family for personal recommendations, or check out forums such as Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree for up to date information.

2. In some towns close to national parks – particularly in East Africa – everybody and their aunt is offering you safaris. If you’re approached on the street/bus stop/train station/bar for a safari just say no. Always speak to safari operators in their office.

3. Be wary of quotes that come in way cheaper than you think they should. If something sounds too good to be true it usually is. (Read our tips for organizing a budget safari. )

4. Shop around and don’t get rushed into anything. Take your time when assessing which company to use, and don’t feel pressured by a common tactic of being offered “the last place, leaving tomorrow”.

5. Go with a company that has its own equipment and vehicles, and ideally don’t pay your deposit until you see the vehicle you’ll be doing the safari in.

6. Be sure that your guide speaks English (or whatever your preferred language is).

7. Discuss the itinerary in detail to be sure of what you’re actually paying for. In particular, # days in national parks, standard of accommodation you’ll be staying in, # wildlife drives per day, any meals and/or drinks that are included.

8. Check to see if the country you’re planning to safari in has an official licensing organization, and if so, whether the safari company is licensed.

Once you’ve read and digested the above, check out our safari company guide which lists the most reputable safari companies by country and specialism.

The 10 Best Safari Outfitters in 2022

When checking off a major bucket list trip like a safari, customization and convenience are top of mind for Travel + Leisure readers.

safari safari company

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite Safari Outfitters.

Spotting the Big Five is the goal for many safari-goers. But chances of actually getting a glimpse of the elephants, leopards, lions, rhinoceroses, and African buffalos depend greatly on the company guiding the trip — especially its attention to the tiniest of details and its expertise on how to responsibly and carefully navigate on the African fauna's home turf. The best safari outfitters accomplish this with aplomb.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , Travel + Leisure asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

This year, three new safari outfitters entered the top 10 that weren't on last year's list. Deeper Africa (No. 5) is known for going beyond the obvious (a trip to Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo with more than 1,000 mountain gorillas, perhaps?), while Africa Adventure Company (No. 7) is operated by the author of a guidebook on the continent's wildlife who has more than three decades of experience, and Go2Africa (No. 9) is run by people born and raised in Africa . Customization options and personalized service were key for travelers. The "passionate" teams at Extraordinary Journeys (No. 2) took the time to understand what guests were hoping to get out of their safari experience and curate itineraries that were nothing short of "magical." One also called out the thoughtful conveniences — like car services and dayrooms in Nairobi — saying they added an elevated level of comfort that wasn't anticipated but "was a godsend."

The challenges of traveling during a global pandemic were also assuaged by the top companies, which, a reader, said addressed "every single one of [their] concerns and questions…before it came to mind," especially in a destination that can feel "complicated." One traveler complimented Extraordinary Journeys for making all the "intimidating" and "ever-changing rules" so "seamless."

1. Travel Beyond

After coming in fifth last year, this company — which runs tours in Botswana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zanzibar, among others — rises to the top spot. In operation since 1975, Travel Beyond consistently impressed readers with its emphasis on putting travelers' needs first, by paying "close attention to all the details," and by working "very hard to get to know their clients' travel styles and interest." Its custom itineraries put responsible wildlife viewing and touring the area's unique scenery first, but also added in experiences like wine tastings and visits to historic landmarks to create "the most incredible adventures." A female solo traveler said they've planned "several once-in-a-lifetime trips" for her.

How to Choose a Safari Company in 10 Easy Steps

safari safari company

Choosing a Safari company is one of the biggest decisions you have to make when planning an African Safari. The quality of the services provided by safari company you use will make or break your safari. It’s for this reason that you need to know what to look for in choosing a good Safari company and the steps you will take to help you get the very best company for your trip.

Below are the 10 Easy Steps to choosing a good Safari Company for your African Safari. Click on any of them to jump to the detailed explanation of each.

  • Determine how much you are willing to spend
  • Identify your preferred travel style and any special needs needs
  • Decide where you want to go and what you want to see and when you want to go
  • Find a list of safari companies for the countries you want to see
  • Sortlist them to a handful that you can contact
  • Find reviews of each of these companies to get an idea of what kind of experience you will get with them.
  • Send emails to request for quotations (View Email Template)
  • Shortlist based on the responses provided to 3 companies
  • Call them and & do extra research on them to help you decide which company to go with
  • Make the payment and  get confirmations

Let’s get into the details as I walk you through the step by step process of choosing a safari company. In  each step, I will give you the tips and tricks of revealing unreliable safari companies and maximize the possibility that you are going to have a great time on Safari

Step 1. Determine how much you are willing to spend

The first thing you need to do when planning for a Safari is determining the total amount of money you are willing to spend throughout your entire Safari. To help you with this, you might want to read the article I wrote on how much a Safari in Kenya costs and how much money you need for a Safari for you to get an idea of how much it actually costs to go on safari.

All you need at this point is your estimated budget which will help you have a proper frame of reference as you engage with the safari companies.

A few things you will want to consider when determining your budget will be:

  • How many people you will be on your Safari: the higher the number, the higher your entire budget but the cost per person will continue reducing as the number of people going on the safari continue increasing.
  • Any special needs: If the safari company is going to be making special accommodations for you on your safari, your general cost of travel will go up.

Step 2: Identify your preferred travel style and any special needs needs

Next, you will need to clearly identify what your travel preference will be for your Safari. This will greatly affect the type of company you will choose so I advise you to spend some time here. Some of the questions you should ask yourself should be in the following areas:

What are your Preferred activities of  the safari:

You will need to determine what is most important to you on this particular safari. You can choose between the following options of activities possible on an African Safari

  • Normal Wildlife Viewing:  Everyone coming for an African safari is coming to see the animals and this will be the main activity in any safari. The question you should ask yourself is what proportion of the time should be allocated to the safari vs other possible activities? If your answer to this is “I want a high proportion”, you will need to communicate this to the Safari company.
  • Cultural safari : Some safaris offer cultural experiences with the indigenous people near the national parks. Eg. You may have a chance to interact with the Maasai people when you visit the Serengeti in Tanzania or the Masai Mara in Kenya .
  • Bird Watching : If birdwatching is the main activity you want to have on your safari, the options you will be offered by the Safari companies will be vastly different than if you were just interested in regular game drives.
  • Beach time : If beach time after your safari is done is something important for you, you will need to be very clear with the safari company you approach.
  • Any specific animals you must see on the Safari: if seeing a white rhino is a must-do item, communicating it to your Safari company will be crucial for them to provide you with the most suitable itinerary for you.

Preferred comfort levels in the hotels and transport

You will need to determine if you will be comfortable staying in budget accommodation or if not, what type of accommodation is more suited to your liking. In addition to this, the decision of whether you want to fly or drive to the safari destinations will also be determined by your preference or budget.

The accommodation and transport make up for a large proportion of the budget and clearly understanding your preferences will help you pick a company that is used to providing levels of service near your preferred levels.

Interaction with other tourists

Shared safaris will have you interact with other tourists that are strangers to you and if this is something you would not want on your safari, it’s important to make a note of it.

Any special activities that you would want to have in the Safari

You may be going on safari with very specific activities in mind. Mentioning this to the safari companies you are vetting will be crucial for an accurate quotation.  Special activities that you may be focused on for your safari may include:

  • Photography
  • Vlogging or reviews
  • Taking a hot air balloon ride

Special Needs

You will also need to articulate clearly any special needs you have that will need to be catered to by the Safari Company. These can include:

  • Any disabilities or impairments that can affect the success of your trip.
  • Any dietary restrictions you may have
  • Special accommodations that regular travelers would not normally have.

Listing all of these things down will help you articulate your needs clearly to the safari companies you approach and will reduce a lot of back and forth between you and them in the initial stages of shortlisting.

In addition to helping enhance the communication between you and the safari company, having clearly articulated needs will help you stay focused.

The safari companies will offer you different alternatives and options that fit into their already established itineraries and knowing what you want will help you avoid being deviated from your original preferences.

Step 3. Decide where you want to go and what you want to see and when you want to go

After you have identified your preferences and any special need you have, you probably already have an idea of the places you would like to see but the timeline may still be something you are thinking about.

You will need to consider a few factors when determining when your safari should be

  • Weather at the time:  A very rainy season will make it difficult for you to spot animals but will also give you better rates
  • Any special attractions at a specific time: You may want to travel when there is a special attraction like the great migration
  • Any events that introduce risks to you traveling: Events like general elections or any political events may introduce risks to you traveling during certain times.
  • Your own schedule: You may have a flexible timeline or have a very strict schedule
  • Your Budget: If you are looking to save on your Safari, you may decide to have your safari in the low season.

List these timelines and destinations down. You can provide these details to the safari operator in the initial contact email.

If you are still not sure where you want to go, you can read the following articles to get guidance

  • Is the Serengeti Worth it? Why You Shouldn’t Go to the Serengeti
  • How Many Days do You Need in Serengeti?
  • Number of Days to Spend at the Mara – A Complete Guide

By the end of this exercise, you want to have a clear picture of the country or countries that you would be interested in visiting for the Safari and a good idea of what time of year it will be.

Step 4. Find a list of safari companies for the countries you want to see

With your needs, timelines, and destinations in mind, its time to start the search for the Safari Company that will fit your requirements. .

A good way of establishing whether our company is experienced in doing safaris is checking whether they are registered with their associations of tour operators in the country.

Most associations of tour operators have websites that have a detailed lists of their members. You can view their websites to establish whether the company you are intending to use for your safari is one of their members.

Tour Operator Association websites are the best places to find lists of established and legitimate tour operators that have been doing business for a while and that have a stake in ensuring that you have a good safari.

To make your work easier, here is a list of the official websites of the Association of Tour Operator the countries that are popular with safaris.

  • Kenya : Kenya Association of Tour Operators’ Members List
  • Tanzania : Tanzania Association of Tour Operators’ Member List
  • Botswana : Hospitality and tour Operators Association of Botswana’s Members List
  • South Africa: The Southern Africa Tourism Services Association’s Members List
  • Rwanda : Rwanda Tours and Travel Association Members List
  • Namibia : Tour and Safari Association of Namibia Members List

Visit the websites of as many tour operators as you can. The goal here is to get a large number of operators who seem like good operators. You don’t have to be right about whether they are good operators or not, you will do research on the companies that you shortlist.

Some of the indicators you can use to establish if a tour company is a good one to work with may include:

  • Quality and up-to-dateness of their website : An up to date website indicates that they care about their image and this kind of investment points to better service delivery.
  • Level of detail on their Itineraries: More details point to a company that is in direct control of their tours and not hiring out sections of their services to unknown third party suppliers.
  • Clearly set dates for Safaris: Clear and hard deadlines usually would mean that they have a large enough flow of clients to assure them of slots being filled consistently.

Step 5. Sortlist them to a handful that you can contact

Once you have come up with a substantial list of possible safari companies, you will need to reduce them to a number that you can contact and manage communications without getting confused. I think narrowing it down to a list of 5 may be a good idea.

A few of the things you can use to shortlist the list of possible companies you will use for your safari are:

  • Registration: Check to see if the safari company is registered with its respective ministry of tourism. Most government agencies in charge of tourism have rigorous application standards that have to be kept consistently for businesses to keep their licenses. An up-to-date would usually registration points to the keeping of high standards.
  • Bonded Providers: I Initially was not familiar with this term as I was doing research for this article. However, I found out that bonding protects the safari company’s clients in case their safaris are not completed as planned. A tour operator that is bonded indicates a commitment to ensuring their clients get a good experience whether without fail.
  • Age of the Safari Company: Generally speaking, older safari companies have a wider range of experience in the tourism industry than other newer players.
  • Number of reviews online: The existence of reviews about the business in independent sources is an indicator that the company is popular and trusted.

Step 6. Find reviews of each of these companies to get an idea of what kind of experience you will get with them.

Find reviews about the kinds of experiences that the clients of the shortlisted safari companies have had with his company in the past.

Look for reviews that are published on third-party sites like Trustpilot or TripAdvisor since they are more trustworthy and authentic than any that the safari company would give themselves.

Look for a detailed description of how people felt about the services provided by each of the company

Try to get dirt on the companies by filtering by the worst rating provided. Read through the bad reviews and check for how the safari company has responded to them. No company is perfect and will have a few negative reviews.

The thing that will differentiate a good company from a mediocre one is how they handle genuine complaints from people who have used their services.

By the end of this exercise, you will have filtered the shortlist of safari companies to about 4-5 and you by this point, you know enough about your own needs and what is available out there that you will be able to carry out a conversation with a safari operator from a position of knowledge.

Step 7. Send emails to request for quotations

Now that you have a list that you have confidence in since you’ve done a lot of research,  it’s time to contact them by requesting them to provide you with pricing details and itineraries for the kind of trip you are interested in.

As I have mentioned earlier,  when making a request for a quotation for your Safari,  you will need to be as specific as possible for the company to provide you with clear and concise information on the first try.

Since you’ve already taken the time to identify your needs,  preferences, and timelines in the previous steps, ensure that you communicate them clearly to the Safari company.

Having your requirements in an ordered, a bulleted list will make it easy for the tour operator to understand all of your needs and answer each of them systematically. T

Conversely, having your needs all lumped into one paragraph will lead to frustrations since the tour organizer may miss an important requirement.

Some of the information you should ask them to provide with your quotation can include:

  • Group size: How large will the group you will be traveling with be? This will help you get a picture of how many strangers you will be having in the car with you.
  • Age limits: Are there any age limits for the safari? This is is important to ask even if you will not be coming with a child to your safari because someone else in your group may come with a child. If that’s something you particularly don’t like, you would need to know ahead of time to help you make your decision.
  • Game Drives:  How many game drives (going out to see the animals in the park)  will you be having per day and how long will each game drive last. You should also ask if the company has any restrictions on things like mileage or time spent per game drive.
  • Accommodation: Is accommodation within the park? Some companies use lodges that are located outside of the national parks. This means that you will miss the early dawn and late dusk wildlife viewing opportunities that have some of the best sightings and photos.
  • Exclusions: You will need to ask what exclusions are applied to the safari. Eg. hotels may cater for meals but would require you to pay for drinks out of pocket.
  • Full board or half board: will the safari company cover the cost of the lunch or will this need to be an out-of-pocket expense?
  • Pictures of their vehicles: You can ask them to send you pictures of their safari vehicles to check if they have new and well-maintained vehicles. The vehicles should be branded with the company’s logo on the side so make sure that they send pictures of the sides of the tour vans.
  • Independent reviews: You can ask them to provide you with links to independent review sites of their safaris. A link to TripAdvisor with reviews would be sufficient here

African Safari Request for quotation template

To save you time, I have prepared a template to help you request your quotation for your African Safari. Fill in the gaps and delete the parts that don’t apply to you.

Subject: Request for Quotation for ________ Day Safari in _______(Country)

Hello,

I would like you to provide me with a comprehensive quotation for a safari in __________(country).

The number of people: ____ Adults ____ Children aged ______

I have ___ days available for the safari and the following are my preferences:

Preferred Activities

I would like to have the following activities on my Safari

  • Cultural Interactions with the indigenous communities like the Maasai
  • Beach Time: I would like at least ____days at the beach
  • Great Migration : I am really keen on witnessing the great migration

Accommodation

My preferred comfort level is: ____________ {{{{ try to describe Budget, Mid Range, Luxury without using these actual words}}}} and I would prefer that my accommodation that have the following amenities.

Locations/National Parks

I would like to visit the following national parks if

I would also like you to cater to the following special needs

INFORMATION REQUIRED

Kindly provide me with the following information together with your quote:

  • How big is the group I will be traveling with?
  • Does the tour have age limits?
  • How many game drives will I have and are there any restrictions or limitations placed on the drives?
  • Are there any expenses that I will need to take care of that are outside of the quoted amount?
  • What will be excluded from the quotation provided?
  • Will the accommodation be half-board or full-board?
  • Please provide me with pictures of your safari vehicles
  • Please also send me links of reviews you have from places like Trustpilot or Tripadvisor.

Things you should NOT include in your quotation request

While it’s important to list your requirements in detail, it’s important to leave some details out for you to get an unbiased quote.

  • Your Budget: You need to keep this information private, especially at the beginning. This is because it works against you if the tour company already knows how much you are willing to spend before they give you how much they will charge you.
  • Too many contact details: You probably just want to provide your email address for them to get back to you using that. Providing a phone number may introduce the possibility of getting unsolicited calls even when you don’t want to hear back from them.
  • Too many contact details: While you want to prove to the people that you are a real person, you want to avoid giving too much about yourself away. If you will end up not using the company, you may feel uncomfortable about your details being with people you do not have any relationship with. These include things like your age, address, etc.

Step 8. Shortlist the companies Again based on the responses provided to 3 companies

The goal of this step is to help you get the top 3 safari companies that suite your needs and comfort level.

If you use the template above, you should get comprehensive quotations without the companies having to ask a lot of follow up questions.

safari safari company

The quotations you have been given may be out of your price range and you can contact them back with requests for adjustments and discounts that will bring the cost down to your intended budget.

At this point, you can disclose how much you had intended to spend and see if they can match this with your expectations. Sometimes, you may be expecting way more than your budget allows and you will need to adjust either your budget or expectations to match this.

Wait for a couple of days before starting your shortlisting process to provide time for most of the companies to respond.

Questions to help you shortlist

A few of the things you should use to shortlist the companies are:

  • How fast did they respond to your request? ( Please note: The people who respond the fastest may not be the very best since they may not have taken time to examine your request)
  • The quality of their communication: Was it clear and detailed?
  • Did they answer your questions specifically or did they just send a default response?
  • Did they send the reviews? If they didn’t, it’s either that they don’t have them or that they are uncomfortable sharing them.

Step 9. Call them and & do extra research on them to help you decide which company to go with

One of the final steps to choosing the company you will go with is to conduct research on each of the companies you selected on your second shortlist. Check forums like TripAdvisor for any reviews and comments about the company you want to use and read discussion threads & look for any bad experiences people have had with the companies.

Also, check for reviews of the hotels you will be staying to see what people feel about them.

Opens in a new tab.

It may also be a good idea to ask for personal references of people who have traveled with them recently to see what kind of experience they had with the company. This may not be possible due to privacy concerns and you should not panic if they don’t provide these details.

Step 10. Choose your Safari Company & Make the payment and  get confirmations

Once you have done your research on these companies three companies, you have a rough idea of the company that will give you the best safari experience at your budget level.

The first thing you need to check before you make the payment with your safari company is their refund policy. It should be detailed and provide clear information on what can be refunded, how it’s done and how long it takes.

Contact them to provide you with the payment terms and the payment methods they accept.

A few points to consider when making your payment:

  • You will probably make your payment through bank transfer. Most Safari operators are reluctant to accept credit cards for large transactions
  • I did a bit of research online and found that most companies will require you to pay 100% in advance. I didn’t like it but it seems to be the standard.

I wish you all the best as you plan your Safari and I hope I have helped answer many of the questions you have about choosing a safari company.

A Final Word

As you prepare for your trip to Africa, I would like to recommend a few products that would help make your life easier.

  • Shoes: I recommend that you check the Keen Hiking shoes . I have written an extensive article on the best shoes for an African safari and this shoe checks all the boxes for things you should look for when choosing a shoe for Africa. ( Check out the Keen Hiking Shoes on Amazon )
  • Camera: If you are not big on photography, I would not advise you to buy a brand new camera for your African Adventure. Good cameras can be expensive and buying a camera you will not use is not a good use of your limited budget. I advise that you rent a camera instead and Lens Rentals have a great Safari Camera Kit perfect for someone traveling to Africa. If you are thinking of getting into photography, then you can invest in a new camera but before you do, check out my pick for the best Safari Camera for a Beginner like Me
  • Information About Africa: I have created a YouTube channel that focuses on things about traveling to Africa that only Africans can tell you about. Check out the channel for insights about African culture and things you can do as a traveler to optimize your trip. You should also visit TripAdvisor forum posts ( Here is the Kenya Forum ) and ask questions about your particular situation. There are a lot of people who are happy to help you out.
  • Choosing a Safari Company: I have written an extensive article on how to choose a safari Company . You can. Check it out before starting the process of searching for a safari company.

To help you narrow down your options, U.S. News compiled a list of 12 can't-miss African safari tours. Read on to find your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Visitors who don't want to sacrifice creature comforts while on safari will appreciate &Beyond's offerings. During the tour operator's 10-day Kings of the Jungle safari – which starts at $11,340 per person – travelers will see breathtaking natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater and the Maasai Mara savanna. But the highlight of this journey is its four-night stay at Tanzania's Serengeti National Park . After watching animals like wildebeest and zebras partake in the great migration while also spotting lions, giraffes and more, vacationers retreat to high-end tents and lodges with private bathrooms.

For some of Africa's most jaw-dropping scenery, opt for the seven-night Namibian Adventure Safari tour offered by Wilderness Safaris. This weeklong trip features visits to the Namib Desert's dune-filled Sossusvlei region (which you may recognize from the film "Mad Max: Fury Road") and the mountainous Palmwag Concession – a protected area with springboks, giraffes, black rhinos and more. The package's per person fee starts at $6,725, which covers most meals, park entrance fees, and transfers from Namibia's capital Windhoek and between the safari destinations. It also covers your stay at properties like the fully solar-powered Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the five-star Little Kulala lodge amid the stunning desert.

Wild Rwanda Safaris

Adventurous travelers sticking to a more conservative budget should consider Wild Rwanda Safaris' Bwindi Gorilla Safari. The three-day package features a full day in southwestern Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (a haven for silverback gorillas) and an adjacent Batwa Pygmy community. Wild Rwanda Safaris allows guests to choose between midrange, luxury and super luxury accommodation, which can help keep costs down if necessary. The company's packages include the $700 permit required to visit the gorilla park. The round-trip journey by safari vehicle to and from Kigali, Rwanda, and English-speaking guide services are also covered in all rates. The tour can begin from Kampala, Uganda, as well, although you'll spend longer on the road to the park.

If you want to explore multiple destinations while on safari with plenty of comfort (but a price tag to match), book the 15-day Micato Grand Safari. This outing by Micato Safaris starts with a two-day visit to Nairobi, Kenya, before continuing to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Amboseli and Serengeti national parks for wildlife-viewing excursions. The package costs at least $22,450 per person (based on double occupancy rates) and includes a hot air balloon ride, a camel tour led by members of the Samburu tribe, and lodging at upscale properties like Serengeti's Four Seasons outpost. The company also offers various extensions allowing you to explore other parts of Africa, from the island paradise of Zanzibar to the deserts of Namibia.

Discover Africa

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day Epic Botswana Adventure is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife like zebras and buffalo on the savanna as well as salt pans from a former lake. You'll stay in upscale lodges and campsites within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris

safari safari company

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush and Beach Safari. You'll start off visiting some of South Africa's historic sites from the Boer wars, before moving on to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, which doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the big five without too many crowds. The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Cuckoo Safaris

Aerial few of the world famous Victoria Falls with a large rainbow over the falls. This is right at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The mighty Victoria Falls at Zambezi river are one of the most visited touristic places in Africa.

For an affordable option, there's the four-day Discover Victoria Falls, Chobe and Hwange Park safari, which will take you on two full-day tours to Chobe National Park (across the border in Botswana) and to Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest national park, where you should keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants and more. This safari also includes a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. The price starts at $900 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and lodging in Victoria Falls; travelers will need to pay for entrance fees to the parks and dinner.

Explore the savanna and deserts of southwest Africa with Compass Odyssey's eight-day Namibia Wildlife Safari. You'll visit a community-based conservation area in Damaraland – known for its desert-adapted elephants, oryx, giraffes and other wildlife – while staying in the rustic-chic Doro Nawas Camp. You'll also spend two days in Etosha National Park, seeking wildlife at the park's bustling waterholes by day and embarking on an evening game drive as well. Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

What Does It Take to Build a Successful African Safari Business?

What Does It Take to Build a Successful African Safari Business?

An African Safari is the adventure of a lifetime, but securing those first few bookings, and establishing a system for consistent success, requires planning for agents. Photo: Shutterstock.com.

Booking your clients on an African safari can be life-changing for them, and for you. Very few destinations and experiences can match the wow factor of going on a safari, setting your agency apart from your competition, while offering you the opportunity for greater sales referrals.

For example, Intrepid Travel’s safari bookings to Africa have grown 13 percent over the last 12 months, said Megan Bailey, director of sales & customer experience, North America.

Jim Alkon, a marketing and strategy executive in Connecticut, booked a safari with Intrepid Expeditions (a different company), in Naples, Florida, and traveled to Africa in July 2017, at the suggestion of his wife Ellen.

“It was the vacation of a lifetime — I still can’t believe I went,” Alkon said. “There is nothing like it. It is so different, so unusual, and an amazing feeling to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. This wasn’t the Bronx Zoo.”

But securing those first few bookings, and establishing a system for consistent success, requires the same level of thoughtful planning that it takes to find the elusive black leopard.

Related Articles

Here are five tips for qualifying potential clients who may not think they’re ready for a safari –and delivering on the promise for travelers already bought into the concept.

1. Vet and align yourself with a top tour guide In 2014, Wes Freas, a realtor in San Francisco, California, and his partner Peter Elting went on safari with Jody Cole, who owns and manages Wild Rainbow African Safaris, LLC, in Asheville, North Carolina.

Cole has traveled to Africa more than 75 times and is one of only a few American women who hold two of the highest certifications from the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa. She is a certified Level 2 Field Guide and Trails Guide.

“Jody was more than a guide in the bush,” said Freas. “From the first moment, when we entered the preserve, you could feel the excitement in her. She was welcoming us to her home and couldn’t wait for us to see the world she loves.”

“I have no doubt we would not have been aware of or recognized certain animals, in particular the bird life, for the fact that she has this encyclopedia of knowledge and an eagle eye. She would spot things without binoculars, and we would slow down or stop, to try to find it with a zoom lens,” said Elting.

Marilyn Cichowski, who lives in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and has gone on two safaris, also highly recommends Cole. “She works in tandem with the guides from the reserves, who don’t consider English their native tongue. We got so much more out of each [animal] encounter, because Jody and the guides only wanted to share their knowledge and love for the land and the animals,” Cichowski said.

2. A client’s passport stamps are no guarantee they won’t be interested Don’t get too caught up on where your clients have traveled to before. A passport filled with stamps in Canada, the Caribbean and Europe doesn’t mean a traveler won’t be interested in an African safari. “I had always wanted to go to Africa, ever since I was a child watching National Geographic with my dad,” said Lila Fox Ermel, owner of Lila Fox Travel Co., New Orleans. But well into her mid-30s, she had fallen into the very common experience of high-frequency European travel.

“My clients were also tending to heavily travel to Europe, as well. Then I got the opportunity to go to South Africa to attend a travel show and decided to add some time on safari to the trip with my husband. We were hooked,” she said.

Intrepid’s business development managers will often do safari-specific trainings for agents, and the company regularly hosts webinars to help advisors learn to sell the product better.

“We will often have agents who normally sell cruises or resorts call us and say their clients are asking about Africa. We are happy to walk them through the process of qualifying a safari passenger,” Bailey said. She said that travelers aged 51-70 make up half of safari bookings from agents.

Freas and Elting mostly had traveled together to urban areas in the Western world. The closest they had gotten to Africa was a trip Elting took to Egypt many years prior. Their 2014 safari actually started out as a gift idea for Elting’s ex-wife. “But the more we processed it, the more we thought, we had never been on safari, so we decided to give the same gift to ourselves,” Elting said.

3. Use your imagination and your client’s First-time travelers to Paris have a strong sense of what they should expect; the Eiffel Tower will offer stunning views. You customers will be humbled at the foot of the pyramids of Giza. But what so many safari-goers relate is how much they were surprised by their experience.

Sell them on something beyond their imagination.

“I anticipated we would see anumber of animals,” Elting said. “But we saw thousands and thousands, and thousands of them. I was unprepared for that. The scale of it was much vaster than anything I could have imagined.”

“You can’t really prepare for the feeling of being on a game drive, especially that first one,” said Fox Ermel. “You think you know how it will be, how it will feel, but there’s a certain venerability in the sense that you’re in their home and their terms, that you’re not the most powerful species on earth. And that’s a humbling, emotional experience.”

“One of our first encounters was with an elephant that seemed a bit unfriendly,” Alkon recalled about his safari. “Our guide said, ‘He’s bigger than us, he knows it, and he wants us to know it.’ He came right up to our jeep, and there were some nervous moments. After a few deep breaths, we couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.”

4. The devil is in the details Safaris, especially multi-country adventures, host an assortment of logistical challenges. Guides should be experienced in dealing with border crossings, working with private aircraft operators and need to be up on what shots your customers will need to enter the country safely.

Cichowski said she was put at ease participating in Cole’s pre-trip prep calls, where “we all got to introduce ourselves, express our concerns, and what we were hoping to get out of this trip. I remember Jody recommending shots for typhoid, and that we couldn’t get into South Africa without our Yellow Fever card. Even though we were talking about these things, she clearly had a command of what we needed to do to protect ourselves, and that put me at ease.”

5. Tap into your clients’ other interests Safaris are perfect for professional and amateur photographers alike, several travelers said.

“I love photographing animals more than any other subject, because they’re unpredictable – they’re constantly moving, and you can’t dictate what you’d like them to do,” said Fox Ermel. “There’s a lot of waiting, patience, but in that space comes learning about what you are photographing, because you’re observing. It’s something that I get a lot of joy from.”

Freas, an amateur photographer, took 3,600 photos on his digital camera over ten days when he and Elting booked with Wild Rainbow. “When I got home, and tried to cull my photos down, I couldn’t get below 1,800. It was that incredible,” Freas said. Intrepid encourages agents to seek out groups of wildlife enthusiasts and birders. “We also find our travelers are interested in seeing what life is really like for the local communities in Africa,” Bailey said.

'Aggressive' Bull Elephant Charges and Lifts Safari Truck Blocking His Path in Shocking Footage

T he field manager of the tour company involved in the incident said the elephant responded to tourists getting too close to take pictures

  • A safari truck had a frightening run-in with an angry bull elephant on March 20 at Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa
  • The elephant lifted and dropped the vehicle, which was filled with tourists, several times
  • The field manager for the tour company involved said the animal got "aggressive" after tourists got too close to take photos

Tourists on a safari in South Africa had a wild and unexpected animal encounter.

According to the Associated Press, a group of tourists were on a safari trip through Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa on March 20 when they encountered a pushy bull elephant.

The animal was unhappy with the vehicle's proximity. In response to the truck's presence, the wild animal charged toward the vehicle and tossed it several times, per the AP, almost piercing the truck with its tusks.

Footage from the incident shared on TikTok by @hendryblom shows the animal walking at the truck and then lifting it with his trunk while the driver of the vehicle yells at the enormous creature. In the video, the elephant drops the truck on the ground, backs away, then approaches the vehicle again and picks it up. After the elephant drops the safari truck for a second time in the clip, the vehicle reverses out of the animal's path.

"We might win next time at 2 truths and a lie," the TikTok user captioned the clip. The poster, named Hendry Blom, told ABC News that those who witnessed the clash "were definitely scared, especially for the people in the truck."

The shocking footage has received over 65.3 million views. A second video posted by @hendryblom shows the same incident from inside the safari vehicle.

According to the AP, the driver and passengers were not injured during their encounter with the elephant but were frightened by the interaction.

Poncho Mogodiri, the field operations manager of the tour company operating the vehicle, Mankwe Game Trackers, told ABC News the incident with the elephant occurred when tourists "came too close to the elephant to take pictures, and he started getting aggressive."

Mogodiri also said the elephant was in musth, a periodic condition in bull elephants that leads to increased reproductive hormones and aggressive behavior.

Pilanesberg National Park is investigating the incident.
