The return journey continues over the wild and remote Rannoch Moor and into the Lowland scenery around Stirling, before finally reaching our starting point of Edinburgh.

The cruise is subject to availability.

*The Loch Ness boat cruise is weather dependent and may be cancelled without notice.

Accommodation

Where does this tour stay overnight.

Your tour stays one night in Inverness*.

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page HERE .

Alternatively, please email us your questions at [email protected] or call us on +44(0)131 226 3133.

Information you can find on the FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab : types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

We have a cancellation period of 48 hours for our one day tours, 15 days for two to nine day tours, and 21 days for 10+ day tours. If cancelled outside this period, we'll give you a full refund minus a 10% admin charge. If you cancel inside this period, refunds are at our discretion. Click here to view full terms and conditions.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

I have more questions, who can help me?

AMAZING 3 Day Isle of Skye Tour with Rabbies | Review!

Categories Scotland , U.K

When looking for a small group tour around Scotland, Rabbies is the answer! I have just come back from a 3 day Isle of Skye tour with Rabbies Tours which I loved so much!

Visiting the mysterious Isle of Skye known for its fairies and giants had been on my bucket list to visit for so long!

In 2018 I went on a 3 day Lake District Tour from London with Rabbies which I really enjoyed, I’ve recommended Rabbies to travellers ever since and as soon as it finished I knew I had to visit Scotland with Rabbies next as they are the pros in Scotland tours!

Isle of Skye Tour

Isle of Skye Tour

It took me 4 years but last week I caught the train from Manchester where I live up to Edinburgh.

I did the Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh (although they also run an Isle of Skye tour from Glasgow which is handy) so I explored Edinburgh for the afternoon, stayed overnight and got up bright and early to start the 3 day tour around Scotland!

We stopped at plenty of places on the way from Edinburgh to Skye and then we saw the best places to visit in the Isle of Skye with Rabbies!

Here’s why I loved my Rabbies Skye tour along with my full Rabbies review so you know why you should book with Rabbies and what to expect when you book an Isle of Skye tour with Rabbies !

Isle of Skye Tour from Edinburgh

When looking for the best Isle of Skye Tours from Edinburgh you’ll find Rabbies highly recommended and I hope after reading this Rabbies review you’ll see why! But first…

Why go on a guided tour to the Isle of Skye?

Visiting the Isle of Skye is one of the best things to do in Scotland but many people wonder ‘how to get to the Isle of Skye?’ as it is so far up North in Scotland and Skye doesn’t have an airport.

If you have limited time in Scotland, driving yourself to the Isle of Skye can be time consuming, expensive and a bit worrying if you can’t confident driving in windy roads in the UK! And that’s why an Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh, or Glasgow, is a great option!

During my 3 day 2 night Isle of Skye tour, we spent both nights on the Isle of Skye but we did spend only 1 full day on the island.

This may not seem like a lot of time but it takes 5 hours to drive from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye passing through so many amazing and popular places like Glencoe and Loch Ness so it makes sense to spend a full day seeing Scotland on the way to Skye and seeing even more on the way back.

If you do feel like 1 day in Skye is not enough, you can look into Rabbies 4 day Isle of Skye tour here !

Plus, Edinburgh is a great place to start the tour because it’s such a brilliant and popular city and you don’t want to rush through here either!

On my tour, there were people from Singapore and Malaysia who were on a UK trip visiting London and Edinburgh and wanted to see more of Scotland on a tour as well as Edinburgh city so this was so perfect and easy for them!

3 Day Isle of Skye Itinerary

To give you some wanderlust and excitement I’ll show you where I visited on my 3 day Isle of Skye itinerary with Rabbies.

Do note that your tour might go to slightly different places or in a different order because as I mention below, one of the great things about Rabbies guides is that they can and will amend the tour based on the weather, guest preferences etc to give guests the best trip possible!

View the whole tour, availability and price on Rabbies website here along with other tours they offer!

Pre-Departure Day

The tour starts at 8:30 am so you will most likely need to stay in Edinburgh the night before. I stayed in Motel One Princess Hotel which is a budget-friendly hotel across the road from Edinburgh Waverly Train Station and the meeting point for Rabbies Tours.

Check rates and availability for hotels in Edinburgh for the night before your trip here!

Edinburgh is a great city, it’s so beautiful, safe and you can see a lot in just a few hours.

With a day or half a day in Edinburgh, things to do in Edinburgh include visiting Edinburgh Castle , seeing the Royal Mile , walking up Arthurs Seat , going to the West End and seeing Edinburgh New Town .

Isle of Skye Tour, Edinburgh

The tour started at 8:30 am. I went to Rabbies Cafe which is next to the impressive Balmoral Hotel and the train station. I checked in with a staff member there and headed 100m up the road with my suitcase to meet my guide Michael and fellow passengers who were from France, Singapore and Malaysia.

We got out of Edinburgh straight away and straight away Michael started the guided tour where he told us a bit about Edinburgh as we drove before telling us what to expect from the rest of the day and 3 days.

We headed to the Scottish Highlands which took about 2 hours. Our first stop was Loch Lubnaig where we got to take in our first Loch with a little walk around (Michael had said in the bus we were not allowed to use the word Lake on the trip, we had to say Loch!), and had a coffee and bathroom break at Cabin cafe.

Isle of Skye tour, Loch Lubnaig

Next, we headed into the mountain pass of Glencoe and Michael told us in-depth information and stories from the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692 which I had no idea about and it really made me look at the scenery and what was their home differently. It’s reasons like this that I love a guided tour!

We had a fair few stops to take photos of the many lochs we were passing and to breathe in the fresh highland air including a stop at the Five Sisters of Kintail viewpoint and to see some deer!

Isle of Skye tour, highland deer

Our lunch stop was in Fort William . One of the things I love about Rabbies tours is that meals are not in set restaurants and cafes. This means you can choose your food preference from various options within a town and choose your budget. There’s nothing worse than being on a budget on a tour not being able to afford anything in a restaurant where you have to visit as a group!

Ben Nevis , the highest mountain in Scotland was our view after our Fort William lunch stop. We then pushed on North towards Skye stopping at Eilean Donan Castle before crossing the bridge to Skye.

Isle of Skye tour, Ben Nevis Viewpoint

Eilean Donan Castle is the most photographed castle in Scotland, which is pretty impressive and so cool that the Isle of Skye tour with Rabbies visits it!

Like with food, extra activities that cost money are not pushed upon passengers, in fact, Rabbies seem to not include many paid attractions within their tours to keep them budget-friendly.

At the Castle, we could go in if we wanted to but none of our group did so we took photos from the outside and viewpoint instead and used their toilets!

Isle of Skye tour, Eilean Donan Castle from viewpoint

The town of Portree was our base on the Isle of Skye which is the main town on the island and it’s a lovely harbour town.

Accommodation is not included in the tour price because again, Rabbies want you to make their tours fit your budget so you can choose your accommodation.

Portree has hostels, guest houses, B&B’s and fancier hotels, so it’s up to you whether you spend £20.00 on a hostel dorm room, £70.00 on a guest house or £150.00 on a hotel. (These are rough prices FYI and will change seasonally but you get the idea!)

Search for a range of accommodation in Portree here!

Rabbies can help you book your accommodation but if you plan to visit in the summer high season, I would check accommodation prices and availability in Portree before booking the tour and if you book the tour, book accommodation straight away!

This was our full day on Isle visiting fairylands, learning about giants’ tales and seeing some really iconic places in Skye!

We woke up to awful rain and wind so when Michael picked us up at 9:00 am he changed our itinerary to suit the weather and his positive spirits kept us positive when we were wondering what on earth we’d see in Skye in weather like this!

We visited the famous fairy pools first, we couldn’t access them as they were flooded so we instead drove to the miniature fairy pools .

Driving through Skye even in the pouring rain was a total pleasure, this island really is beautiful so I kicked back in my seat and enjoyed the views with a coffee through the large and clear bus windows as we drove up to Trumpan Church right on the North-Eastern tip of the Isle.

Isle of Skye tour, miniature fairy pools

We had lunch back in Portree town as there are the most food options here and it’s the middle point when driving between the East and West of Skye.

Portree has some nice cafes, restaurants and fish and chip shops. I warmed up with some soup at Nourish Cafe which was a great option and I recommend it!

Isle of Skye tour, lunch in Portree

Thankfully, the weather cleared and eased for us in the afternoon, the weather forecast did predict this and that’s why Michael held back on showing us the more popular natural wonders of Skye until the afternoon.

We drove up the East Coast having so many photo stops and opportunities to walk around starting at Bride’s Veil Falls and the Old Man of Storr viewpoint . I believe in the summer passengers can walk around The Storr but with the weather conditions we had, it was not possible.

Isle of Skye tour, Old Storr

Rigg Viewpoint was next which is a stunning spot and a couple actually got engaged here on my tour! Michael helped the man find the perfect spot and opportunity in the day and on the edge of the coast was really it!

We went waterfall hunting next to Lealt Falls and Mealt Falls . Mealt Falls is the waterfall I’d see a lot on Instagram so I was really happy to see it in real life and it turns out this viewpoint is also for Kilt Rock and Michael told us tales of giants who lived in the area and that Kilt Rock is named as it is because it looks like a literal Giant Kilt embedded into the rock!

Isle of Skye tour, Mealts Falls and Kilt Rock

Our final stops of the day before the sun went down was the impressive mountain pass of the Quiraing which we were able to take a good walk along, and Fairy Glen.

Isle of Skye tour, Quiraing

I had heard so many fairy names before coming to Skye – Fairy Pools, Fairy Bridge, Fairy Glen, so it was amazing to see these places myself and hear the stories from Michael who was so passionate about it too.

Fairy Glen was one of my favourite spots and it was truly beautiful as the sun started to set.

Isle of Skye tour, Fairy Glen

I got dropped off at my accommodation in Portree at 6:00 pm and went out for dinner.

Rabbies say that restaurants in Portee book up fast, especially in the summer months so it’s best to book a table in advance, and in the summer, advance means way before the tour starts.

I got a delicious pizza from Caberfiedh Bar and Restaurant on day 1 and went towards the harbour and got fish and chips on day 2 because I can’t go on a British holiday by sea and not eat fish and chips!

Isle of Skye tour, Portree at sunset

At 9:00 am we left the Isle of Skye passing by Eilean Donan Castle on the way for a toilet and refreshment break and the opportunity to go in.

This final day of the tour did involve a lot more driving and longer drives than we had on days 1 and 2 where we had stopped more regularly but it was ok because our main focus of the day was the ever so famous Loch Ness and we arrived in the town of Fort Augustus at the base of Loch Ness at lunchtime.

Isle of Skye tour, Fort Augustus

I was really happy as we got to spend nearly 2 hours here having the opportunity to get some lunch in the many cafes and also go out on a 50-minute boat cruise in search of the Loch Ness Monster of course!

This was the only activity I paid extra for on the tour and although at £18.00 for 50 minutes, it is quite pricey, it was a really great trip and the guide on the boat told so many interesting stories and really uncovered the myth around Nessie!

Isle of Skye tour, Loch Ness Boat Cruise

After a few more short stops, we reached Edinburgh at about 6:30 pm. I got some dinner near the station and because I was going straight home I booked an 8:00 pm train out of Edinburgh back down to Manchester which was perfect for me!

Best things about Rabbies Tours!

Having gone on 2 Rabbies Tours in England and in Scotland I can see that although the locations and the guides change, all of their tours have a lot of similarities which are what make Rabbies so great for guided group tours in the UK and afar!

Small group tours

Rabbies only run tours in 16 seater coaches and there are a few reasons for this…

Firstly, having a smaller bus allows access to smaller roads and country lanes that bigger coaches can’t access. This is such an important thing when travelling places like the Isle of Skye, Lake District, Cotswolds, etc because there are so many small one-way roads!

Secondly, smaller groups make it easier to get to know one another and much less intimating for solo travellers than being in a big group.

Lastly, as Rabbies say, you can’t stop at a local cafe with 30 guests because it’s too overwhelming, with that number you can only stop for breaks at designated tourist facilities which is not the best way to do it!

Isle of Skye tour, Rabbies Coach in car park

Storytelling guides

One of the best things about guided tours is learning about where you are visiting and Rabbies tour guides know so many facts and historic information but they also know so many stories and tales, and they love to tell them to their guests!

Within the first few hours of my Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh, I felt like I’d learned so much about Scotland and the history there that I had no idea of and by the time I finished the 3 day tour I was full of stories and facts which I told my family when I got home!

For travellers coming from overseas especially, having a friendly and approachable Rabbies guide who gives so much information really enhances the tour! Where ever I travel I love to know more about a place than just seeing it and that can be hard when travelling independently but this is a huge bonus to group guided tours.

Flexible itineraries

Each tour has a set itinerary but the guides use their experience and initiative to give the best possible experience to passengers.

As I mentioned above, it was so wet in the morning when I was in Skye but we saw that the weather looked clearer later on so our guide changed our itinerary so we saw the ‘iconic’ Skye spots later on with better weather.

We also missed out on 1-2 places because the rain and wind were too dangerous for us to drive there but I’d rather miss a place than the guide taking us and putting us at risk because they have to stick to the itinerary!

Supporting the local community

Rabbies try to go to the local cafes and shops so we are giving back to the local community.

For lunch and dinner, passengers are able to go where ever they want within a town which means business and money gets spread around rather than always going to the same places.

Isle of Skye tour, Coffee stop

Guaranted departures

This is a huge positive to Rabbies over other tour companies – they offer guaranteed departures! There are no minimum numbers on tours for them to go ahead, if you book it, you go on it!

On my Isle of Isle Tour and my Lake District tour, there were only about 9-10 of us, not a full coach and actually, this was really nice as we had even more space on the coach and free time. In summer you can expect a full coach, especially to popular places like Skye but in the winter months, it’s more likely to be half a coach which can be really beneficial!

I hope this helps you make a decision on booking the best Isle of Skye tour around and what to expect from a Rabbies Isle of Skye tour!

This post is in collaboration with Rabbies Tours but all opinions are my own and from my genuine experience on the tour like all the other passengers.

Marcus our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable in the history and culture of Ireland. He was very kind and good company. Very quick witted and funny. He timed all of the stops really well so we always had a place to use the bathroom and to grab snacks. Very communicative about the plan for the day and what we were going to see along the way. We were blessed with excellent weather most of the trip but one day was rainy and he was very good about rearranging to make sure that we still had a good time and got to see a lot. Very thorough tour got to see a lot of Ireland, a lot of ancient sites and learn about the cultures and history of the people who live there. Would highly recommend any of rabbies tours. 6-Day The South of Spain and the Treasures of Andalucia Small-Group Tour from Madrid

Our small tour ( 3 travellers) with our very knowledgeable guide Violeta was wonderful. We had very comfortable touring van with great driver Pedro and excellent accomodation. Although a fast paced program with some long driving days and lots of walking - we had sufficient time to enjoy key cities and highlights notably the Mezquita in Córdoba and the Alhambra in Granada- as well as plenty of stop offs on side routes - the windmills of Castilla - La Manchia, the Fortaleza de la Mota ( amazing) and the unexpected but fun trek in El Torcal de Antequera with its unique pre historic limestone formations and spectacular mountain scenery on the way up. We took optional tours for Phillip Stark’s work in progress organic olive farm/ restaurant/ tasting room which when completed (ETA end 2023) am sure will be a must see .Less so for us was the expensive tour ( 40 Euros !) of Tio Pepe factory and compound . After the long drive the day before this was also a long sidetrip out of Seville with lots of traffic coming back into the city - and in hindsight we would have preferred to use the time exploring Seville.Violeta found a very good Flamenco show for us to book in Seville. You can also see for a small donation authentic dancers and singers at Plaza de Espagna. Overall a wonderful and memorable tour.

Reviews of Rabbie’s Small Group Tours Tours

We really enjoyed our tour. Our tour guide, Marty, was terrific! He shared the history of each area we visited, the meaning of Irish words, fantastic pub/restaurant and museum recommendations and even had alternate plans for us when the Jameson Whiskey tour was canceled because of record rainfall and flooding (we got a refund too!). Our accommodations were always close to City Centre, clean, comfortable and had a delicious breakfast. It was a great experience!
I had a blast on this tour! It had a sweet mix of Irish towns, culture, and some seriously breathtaking nature. Stephanie, our guide, was awesome - she had all the inside knowledge at every spot, making the trip super fun. This was my first time on a tour like this, but I'm definitely down for more in different places!

Isle of Skye & West Highlands – 4 Day tour with Rabbie’s

Jacobite monument in Glenfinnan

After my 3 day tour in Ireland with Rabbie’s, I decided to head to Scotland and take a 4 day tour to the Isle of Skye and the West highlands . I absolutely love Rabbies! The guides have the freedom to be able to customize tours, so it pretty much a guarantee that every tour is going to be slightly different. There is also a max of 16 people so its a small group tour, making it easier to get along with your fellow passengers as well as your driver guide.

Not only are the guides super duper friendly (and funny!), they will make sure to ask all of the passengers of the tour what they want to see and then they will try their best to show them as well as showing off the best of the area they are in. The guides pride themselves on trying to take you to places not everyone else goes to

This tour is a the best four day trip to see as much of Scotland as humanly possible in four days

The rules on this tour (not “official” Rabbies rules):

  • Have fun!
  • Be adventurous, Scotland rains a lot, so bring a raincoat and some decent waterproof boots – get out and explore, even if it’s raining a little – you are only on this trip once (well for most people anyway) so take advantage of every opportunity.
  • Get to know your fellow passengers, take the time to chat to them.
  • If there are solo travellers, try to make them feel a part of the group and help take photos of them, i’m sure they will return the favour for you too.
  • Embrace Scotland during the tour, use all of your senses – touch, smell, sight, hearing and in some cases taste.. Put your phone down and look around (as said by Gavin our incredible guide!).
  • Be on time – if you guide asks you to be back in 30 minutes, be back in 29 minutes. If you are constantly late, it puts a damper on other passengers trip having to wait around and also means that the constant delays may mean that you will miss out on stops later that day.
  • Tip your driver guide at the end of your trip, they work hard to make sure you are looked after and have the best time.

Movies to watch before you start this trip:

  • Braveheart
  • Skyfalls
  • Flash Gordon

Day 1 Rabbies Tour

Today you’ll drive from Edinburgh to Fort Williams , where you will be staying overnight.

As this is a four day tour, the bus doesn’t leave near the Rabbie’s office like most of th day trips, it leaves from gate J & Gate K at the Edinburgh Bus Station.

Stop that were made on day one:

The Kelpies

The Kelpies are dogs, like they are in Australia, they is the largest horse statue in the world. The horses featured are named Duke and Barron and are a nod to the horses that used to help pull the barges in the industrial stage in this area of Scotland.

The mythology about the Kelpies is very interesting too, grandparents used to warn their kids about the kelpies. They are the whitest purest looking horse you have ever seen, they lure you to them and are usually standing next to water.

When you get close to them and make contact with the horse the texture changes and you’re stuck! It will then dive into the water to the bottom and it will drown and eat you leaving your heart to float to the top. So maybe stay away from pretty white horses near the water…..

The Kelpies in Scotland

Doune castle

Doune Castle is a quick 30 min photo stop, there is a charge to go into the castle but you can walk around the grounds and take photos for free.

While the inside is nice, due to the time constraint, 30 mins if not enough to take photos outside and do a tour inside.

Doune Castle was used in Game of Thrones pilot episode was Winterfell, it has also been used in Outlander as Castle Leoch.

Doune castle in Scotland

Callander is a one hour lunch stop, I remember this little town from our Loch Ness day trip with Rabbie’s last year.

I’d recommend going for a little wander around, visit the Loch behind the row of shops and then grab some lunch at MHor Bakery – you can eat in or take away. Make sure to leave room for dessert at your next stop!

Cathedral in Callander Scotland

Louch Lubnaig

After lunch, you’ll be on your way and the next stop is just a quick photo stop at Louch Lubnaig, it’s a popular swimming spot for locals, even in winter!

Here you can also enjoy Scottish Flapjacks for dessert. These flapjacks are not like the ones we all know; pancakes. Scottish Flapjacks are more like a granola bar with oats, honey, sugar and some love (and a few other secret ingredients).

Louch Lubnaig in Scotland

There are a number of different stopping spots in the Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Highlands area including Black mountains and Loch Tulla, Pass of Glencoe, Kings House hotel (where you can meet some deer), Lairig Eilde Waterfall, the three sisters of Glencoe, Loch Achtriochtan and the Glencoe visitors centre.

Usually I’m not that big into visitors centres as they can be a little stuffy but the Glencoe visitors centre is brand new, it opened this year and does a short film about the area of Glencoe and the history, it’s extremely interesting to watch – it only runs for around 10 minutes but I would highly recommend watching it, it covers the history of Glencoe.

Glencoe In scotland

Your last stop is Fort Williams, where you will be spending the night. I would recommend staying at the Myrtle Bank Guest House . When you’re ready for dinner head down to “The Grog & Gruel” restaurant along the main strip in Fort William, they have some really delicious food!

A few interesting things I learn on Day 1:

  • Alleyways in Edinburgh are called closies due the close approximate to the buildings
  • Football rugby and golf are 3 major sports in Scotland
  • Scotland rarely wins games so they are used to celebrate loses
  • There is the “ Right to Roam ” in Scotland, where anyone has the freedom to roam in Scotland. Being able to roam and camp where you want including farms and national parks.
  • West Highway Walk is a very popular walk in Scotland, it covers 97 miles from Glasgow to Fort William and most people do this walk over 7 days, either camping or staying in local towns.

Loch Achtriochtan in Scotland

Day 2 Rabbies Tour

Today you will be going from Fort William to your overnight base in Kyleakin.

Stop that were made on day two:

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Not only are the views here amazing over Loch Sheil and the Jacobite monument but you get to see the famous Harry Potter “ Hogwarts Express ” train go past, over the viaduct.

The train goes past around 10:45am. There are a few different viewpoints, one of which is a 45-60min walk away so you can either watch the train from the car park or head up on the right side of the car park to a small look out – get up there early to get a good spot.

Hogwarts on Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland

Camusdarach beach

Camsdarach beach is one of Gav’s favourite spots. Here you will be able to take our shoes off and put our feet in the water, enjoyed the icy icy cold sea water lapping up against our legs.

In the distance you can also see the Isle of Skye, where you will be spending the next few days.

Camusdarach beach in Scotland

Mallaig is a quick lunch stop and where you will catch the 30 minute ferry over the Isle of Skye. Make sure to be back on the bus on time as the ferry waits for no man!

Mallaig in Scotland

Talisker Distillery

Your first stop on the Isle of Skye might be Talisker Distillery where you will get to taste the Isle of Skye – Whisky made here.

The whisky is very smokey and phety Scottish whisky. If Whisky isn’t your thing, you can grab a coffee from a local cafe down the road.

Whisky tasting at Talisker Distillery

Glen Brittle

Rather than going to the overcrowded fairy ponds that takes too long to get to and from, you’ll head to one of Gav’s secret spots that are almost the same as the Fairy ponds, but a little smaller and less of a walk to get to.

The great thing about this spot is that there is no one else here! It’s not overly crowded, just you and your new friends.

Glen Brittle on Isle of Skye

A few interesting things I learn on Day 2:

  • IKEA has a deal in place with the Scottish authority. They purchase their wood from Scotland as it’s better quality than what they get in Sweden.
  • There is approx 32,000 lochs in Scotland
  • The Unicorn is the national animal in Scotland (seriously), it’s on the Royal Coat of Arms. The only thing that can defeat a lion (England) is a Unicorn.
  • A quirky myth about rainbows in Scotland, unlike their neighbours in Ireland, rainbows are made by unicorns farting and instead of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it will in fact be a pile of rainbow poop in Scotland….

Glen Brittle on Isle of Skye

Day 3 Rabbies Tour

Day three will consist of exploring the Isle of Skye, strap in for a long and fun day!

Stop that were made on day three:

Island at the edge

Island at the edge is a small island farm run by a local couple, you’ll meet the lovely Jasmine.  She has a number of sheep as well as two Hairy coos (not cows – coos, are Scottish highland cows).

Jasmine and he husband breed sheep for the fleece. The sheep are shaved once a year, where they bring in New Zealand shears, who are able to get the fleece off the sheep in 45 seconds. She will take you out to meet the sheep and the Hairy coos where you can feed and pat them.

Hairy Coos and Sheep at Island at the edge on the Isle of Skye

You’ll get a 1 hour stop over in Portree for lunch, it’s likely going to be a slightly early lunch but make sure you get something decent as you’re afternoon is going to be very active.

Portree is also a cute little town, the harbour is very photogenic and the local shops are cool to wander through and pick up a few goodies to take home.

Be adventurous and try some Haggis however if you’re too put off of the idea of Haggis, then try another Scottish dish called cullen skink soup, which is similar to a chowder – it’s very filing.

Portree Harbour

The Fairy Glen

The Fairy Glen, was only of my personal favourite places and it’s a very magical place, from the moment you step off the bus you’ll feel something magical. In this particular place, there are a lot of doorways to the fairy world from here. Not all of the fairies are very nice, they can be deceiving.

If you make a lot of noise in the glen and annoy the fairies, they will come out of their fairy mounds and lure you in. Keep in mind that one day in fairy is = 100 days in the real world so make sure you behave! Also be careful standing in fairy circles….

**Personally, I think I saw a fairy, or my mind was playing tricks with me. I was climbing up high where there weren’t many people. I was watching my steps as it was slippery and close to a cliff face…. When I looked up, I saw a man, I looked back down to make sure my footing was secure before I said hello, when I looked up again, the man wasn’t anywhere to be seen and I didn’t see him again until later in the day in another location, where I blinked and he was gone again. Creeeeeepy!

The Fairy Glen on the Isle of Skye

Secret falls

The name of this waterfall isn’t secret falls, however, it was my guide (Gav) secret spot. Depending on your guide, you might visit this waterfall or they will take you to their own little secret spot.

Secret falls on the Isle of Skye

Isle of Skye Brewery

The Isle of Skye Brewery will be a short 20 minute stop to try some local beer, even if you don’t like beer, just give it a try as some of the brews don’t even really take like typical beer. The little store is pretty cool with a few bits and pieces.

The Quiraing

You’ll stop off at the world famous Quiraing and while you won’t have time to walk up (3-4 hour walk away) and take a look at it up close, there are two different spots that you can view the Quiraing.

The first stop is on the left where most people go and by all means head up and take a photo and checkout the view, but personally I think the second viewpoint on the right is better and less people head up there as it requires some climbing and rock hopping but it’s totally worth it.

The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye

Staffin Bay

Staffin bay is a nice stop off to relax by the beach for a few minutes and take in the views of the Quiraing from another angle.

There is also a dinosaur footprint on one of the rocks that you can check out up close and personal, however, it is located along a stretch of rocks that is super duper slippery so its not recommended to head over and have a look and if you do, it’s at your own risk.

My favorite thing about this beach when i visited was that the black sand beach that has white sections – makes it look like rays of sun on the beach but it’s white sand

Staffin Bay

Kilt Rock & Mealt Falls

Your guide will set the scene, a story of a 60 foot tall giant called Ewan McCloud who was involved in a fight with another giant that challenged him for his territory (the islands he protected). Both of the giants were Scottish and of course they wore kilts.

Ewan was hit and thrown into the coast line which left a dent, however, at the end of the fight, Ewan was victorious and was rewarded by the lady giants – more to come on this below.

This area is called Kilt Rock because the coast line looks like the pleats on the back of Scottish kilts. Mealt Falls can also be seen from the viewpoint, it feeds right into the ocean.

Kilt Rock & Mealt Falls

Old man Storr

Continuing the story of Ewan McCloud, once he won his battle with the other giant, all the ladies were very pleased with him and a lot of noise was created (wink wink…) and as a result this really annoyed the fairies.

The fairies cast a spell on Ewan and when he reclined back on the rocks to relax from all this time with the ladies, the fairy spell came over him, he became a part of the landscape. The only thing really visible of Ewan was his “old man” (manhood). It’s called “Old Man of Storr” as Storr is where Ewan came from.

Most photos of the Old Man Storr that you will see on Instagram or online are up close, this requires walking/hiking to get up this close and it takes around 2 hours to get this close. It’s still a great view from the bottom.

Old man Storr

Seamus bar

Depending on your guide, you might enjoy a group dinner with all your fellow passengers and your guide on your last night in Skye. Seamus bar is a great stop for dinner as they have delicious and affordable food as well as over 400 whiskies as well as some locals ales as well.

Seamus bar

Sligachan

Either before or after dinner (although i think after is better), head down to the Sligachan river where you get down on your hands and knees and submerge your face in the river for a min of 7 seconds…. But why you ask?!

The Scottish fairies blessed the water further up the river, if you submerge your face you will be blessed with eternal beauty. It’s also a great group activity to bring you all together to do something a little silly and crazy!

Head back to your b&b or hotel for the night and get ready for your last day in the Isle of Skye.

Sligachan River

A few interesting things I learn on Day 3:

  • Skye was created 65,000,000 years ago from volcanic activity under the sea
  • Happy cow is an app used in Scotland for people who are vegan and veggie to check out restaurants and reviews
  • There is more to Scottish food than Haggis:

Fisherman’s plate – a buffet of seafood caught locally  Salmon is also big in Scotland  Steak pie – chucks of meat in a pie  Chippie tea – fish and chips – it’s a treat meal for most people

  • Iron brew is a Scottish soft drink, it’s considered the national drink and drink of choice when you have a hangover. It tastes like cream soda or bubble gum. Fun fact: It’s banned in the USA, one of the “E” processing numbers is banned in the USA.

Right of The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye

Day 4 Rabbies Tour

Day four is your last day (I know it’s sad!) you’ll be heading back to Edinburgh so there won’t be as many stops so enjoy the ones you get as there will be a lot of driving.

Stop that were made on day four:

Eilean Donan Castle & Carr Brae viewpoint

Eilean Donan Castle has actually been rebuilt numerous times due to being destroyed or mismanaged.

The Macrae family own it and make sure to keep it maintained. Only family members can get married here with enough notice in advance.

While you won’t be stopping to go inside the castle, if you come back here, you can enter the castle for £14 however, you can’t take pictures inside. The outside is just as pretty as the inside!

Eilean Donan Castle & Carr Brae viewpoint in Scotland

Unicorn Road

The white horse on the hill looks like a unicorn from a far and the name of the road isn’t unicorn road, it’s another super secret Gav spot. The views from up here are pretty cool and you can go up and pat two horses that live along the road.

Horses on Unicorn road

Clachan Duich Burial Grounds

Clachan Duich Burial Grounds is a religious site dating back to at least 1050 (graves dating back to this date). It’s the traditional burial place of the Macrae chiefs. Most of the graves are from the 1800s and the late 1900s.

The views over Loch Duich and surrounding mountains are pretty incredible too.

Clachan Duich Burial Grounds

Fort Augustus & Loch Ness

Loch Ness is a freshwater loch which is a total of 23 miles from the top of the loch to the end of the loch and it’s said that the Loch is deeper in some areas than in the ocean.

The Loch Ness monster stories started in 560AD, when Saint Columba came across from Ireland, he stopped at Loch Ness with some of his followers, he was woken by someone screamed. He jumped up and in the water was a monster with a follower in his mouth.

He said to the monster “You will go no further, and won’t touch the man; go back at once” the monster fled. Over the years there have been many sightings and fishermen would go missing.

A local made a report to the national press about the “monster” to try to get more people to come to Fort Augustus and more people started the visit. Scientists visited the loch and used sonar, they picking up large readings, when they would move towards the large readings, it would move again, they would pick it up again – back and forth this game was played but nothing has been found or not found. There are million year old cave systems under Loch Ness so who knows for sure what’s really down there.

There is a three million pound reward if you see the Loch Ness monster and can prove it with photos or video – that are actually legit.

Fort Augustus & Loch Ness

Commando Memorial in Spean

There memorial in Spean for the commandos that fought in World War II, it overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle. Commandos still use this area of Scotland to complete their training.

On a clear day you can see Ben Nevis Mountain range. Fun fact: Australian are the ones that are most rescued by mountain rescue from Ben Nevis when hiking as we apparently tend to go hiking in flip flops, shorts and a t-shirt. Maybe they were just going for an afternoon stroll and go up the mountain a little too high.  Sorry mountain rescue (from Australia).

Spean Bridge Mill

You’ll stop at Spean Bridge Mill for 30 minutes to grab a bite to eat and shop til you drop, they off some lovely items made from Wool to purchase here.

Dalwhinnie Distillery

Dalwhinnie Distillery is a quick stop off to use the facilities and to try out some whisky which is different from day two at Talisker Distillery. This whisky is softer and not as smokey.

Dalwhinnie Distillery

Dunkeld

Dunkeld if your last stop before you arrive back into Edinburgh, here you can visit the 1300th century Dunkeld Cathedral which is located next to the fast moving River Tay. Construction on the cathedral started in 1260 and was then completed in 1501.

Dunkeld is a cute little town, it’s not a tourist town so all the stores are vintage and more aimed towards locals. It’s nice to walk around and check out what the locals are into.

Dunkeld Cathederal in Scoland

A few interesting things I learn on Day 4:

  • John muir who came from Dunbar, visited the USA in 1800s and wrote 33 articles highlighting preservation and looking after the world. President Roosevelt read the articles and agreed. National parks were created when these 2 men met.
  • National parks weren’t a “thing” in Scotland since 17 years ago, there is now two national parks: Loch Lomond National Park and the second is Cairngorms National Park
  • Scotland is trying to go green  and their target is 2020, to have 100% renewable sources for electricity. Currently they are on track with Wind farms, which is great as Scotland is the windiest country in Europe.
  • Hydro farms are also used in Scotland, they use fast flowing rivers and dams, water will build up and during certain times of day they will allow the water to flow through the Dan which turn turbines which creates electricity

Horses on Unicorn road

I hope you enjoyed my overview of what you can see and learn during the “ Isle of Skye & West Highlands ” 4 day tour with Rabbies. They have in no way paid me to write this or promote their company, I think it’s a great company and I really enjoy their tours, this isn’t the first or last tour I will take with them.

If you’d like to save it for later, please save it to Pinterest.

rabbies day tours

Has anyone planned with Trafalgar (GET tours), Globus, etc. for about a week's tour of England?

If so, please provide feedback. Thank you.

I doubt you will find many on here who have taken a UK coach holiday as this forum is more geared to independent travellers.

Having said that the companies are reliable and you will be taken care of but be aware you probably won't see as much as you would think from the brochures and there will be early starts and a lot of time spent on the coach.

Don't try and cover to many different places to reduce the travel content.

If you have any special interests look for tours that cater to that interest.

If by "highly rated" you mean "higher end," I'm not sure if either qualifies--Globus used to be pretty low-end. To a considerable extent you get what you pay for on tours; you should compare itineraries and hotels. Do you go from A to B on one day, or to A, then B, and finally C? Are the hotels central or on the outskirts? Do you want to see things in more depth and have more time in places of interest, or do you just want to get an overview of as many places as you can? adamhornets' comments are also very accurate depending on the itinerary.

Trafalgar is part of a much larger company which also runs Insight Tours, Costsaver Tours and others. I have actually used Insight Tours once long ago but not in England. Insight is a little more upmarket than Trafalgar, and Costsaver as the name suggests is more down market.

The three all run tours with similar itineraries, the main difference tends to be the hotels they use. I found Insight used very good centrally located hotels. I have no complaints about the hotels or tour guides on the tour I was on, but found the itinerary rushed. But I also found that I am not really a tour person and prefer to do my own thing.

You might find the comments on this Insight tour to be helpful:

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g186338-i17-k14624540-Insight_Britain_Ireland_Explorer-London_England.html

Plenty of reviews for these companies elsewhere online

Marty S did a report on a Trafalgar tour in July 2023:

https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g186216-i15-k14477009-Trip_report_8_15_July_escorted_coach_tour-United_Kingdom.html

A forum search (change default from relevance to date for more recent posts) may bring up others.

As well as the full size coach tours you've named there are "small group" operators who use smaller vehicles (<20 passengers) you may want to consider - eg Rabbies, Back Roads Touring, Rabbies also do day trips where you may find reviews on some of the destination forums and seem well regarded.,

I very much appreciate the responses I received. They are informative and helpful. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.

As #7 hinted, the words to watch out for in a Coach Tour itinerary are "you will see" which often means you just get driven past it en route to somewhere else.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .

A Day on the Island: Arran 1 day tour

isle of arran view

The Isle of Arran. Scotland in miniature. A mound of deep green and blue hues sitting across the water; adventure is calling.

Tour Highlights

Brodick and Brodick Castle - Haunted by a 'Grey Lady', this Victorian castle is home to treasures both gold and green.

Isle of Arran - She's known as 'Scotland in Miniature'. Why? You can find everything that makes Scotland lovable on this tiny and beautiful island.

Lochranza - Explore this gorgeous seaside village, home to a ruined castle.

Blackwaterfoot - Seaweed-covered rocks, the gentle wash of waves on a shore, the smell of pastry in the air, Blackwaterfoot is as quaint and quiet as they come.

Your journey

Imagine discovering something. A place so perfect it couldn't possibly be real. We can only imagine what it must have been like for fishermen and hunters back in the Middle Stone Age, leaving mainland Scotland and exploring this tiny isle for the first time.

It had everything the mainland had. Lochs. Mountains. Beaches. Forest walks. Moors. All neatly tucked into this tiny paradise. And now that man has come to the isle, there are castles and standing stones and everything that makes a country like Scotland iconic.

Who doesn't love saying that they're heading to an island for the day? Now it's your turn. Leave the bustling city of Glasgow behind for the day and head with us to Scotland in Miniature. The Isle of Arran has everything that makes Scotland lovable.

You depart Glasgow and head for the coastal town of Ardrossan where you jump on the ferry. This is a beautiful crossing, so get your cameras out, and see if you can spot jellyfish and dolphins along the way.

The ferry touches down in Brodick, Arran's biggest collection of shops and restaurants. It's a wee place, just like the whole island, but that's what we love about Arran. A short drive down the road takes you to the gates of Brodick Castle, the ancient seat of the Dukes of Hamilton.

The castle's interior could not be further from the surrounding gardens. Inside you'll find rich Victorian decorations, dark wood, intricately decorated furniture, everything so dramatic and powerful. Make sure you have a chat with the staff inside, they're full of stories about those who once lived there. For much of its life, the castle has been owned by the Hamilton family and some even say that, to this day, it is haunted by the 'Grey Lady', a woman who starved to death in the dungeons of the castle.

Not so cheerful. But then you step outside and explore both the formal garden and the beautiful woodland trails that hug you from all sides.

After a bite to eat, you hop back on the bus and are whisked away to explore more of this beautiful island. But where will you stop? Perhaps you'll pop in at Lochranza, a quaint village that is home to a ruined castle. Or maybe you'll swing via Blackwaterfoot, grab a pastry from the local bakery, and have a wee wander along the beach.

By the time you jump back on the ferry at Brodick later that afternoon, you'll feel as though you know Arran a little bit better and you'll certainly understand why so many love it fiercely. Maybe you'll look back at the photos from the day, or perhaps you'll snack on the cheese and chocolate you sourced from town, as you make your way back to Glasgow.

Attractions

Tour Attractions

You are able to pre-purchase entrance tickets to the following attractions at the time of booking:

  • Brodick Castle

Other attractions may be booked and paid locally during the tour.
