Don't use these 3 types of phrases in your resume, says ex-Google recruiter

Recruiters are busy people. They've got "typically about 20 to 30 positions open, truckloads of resumes they have to wade through and folks they have to meet and interview," says Simon Taylor , former Disney recruiter and author of the leadership book " Build Smart ."

It stands to reason if a resume has any red flags whatsoever, they'll move onto the next one immediately. When you're writing yours, you'll want to make sure it meets their criteria and doesn't give them a reason to pass on your candidacy.

Here are three phrases former Google recruiter and current CEO of salary data company FairComp , Nolan Church, recommends avoiding.

'Coordinated meetings with X'

To begin with, under each job title, avoid writing a list of tasks that you took at the job. "I don't give a s--- about your tasks," Church says.

The day-to-day duties of your job like emailing with your boss or creating your quarterly goals do not give a concrete sense of what you accomplished and how you helped the business move forward. "The one I see all the time that just blows my mind is 'coordinated meetings with X,'" Church says.

"There's literally no business impact for coordinating meetings," he says. Think, instead, of what you did that truly benefitted the business, like booking new clients or exceeding sales goals, and use specific numbers to illustrate it.

A 'word salad' of keywords

Career experts recommend using keywords from the job description to prove you meet the role's criteria. But many jobseekers go too far.

People tend to " have this word salad based off of what the [job description] says," says Church. If a marketing job calls for implementing strategic marketing, refining the company's messaging platforms and engaging stakeholders, for example, a jobseeker might wrongly include every one of those terms in one sentence.

Create a rule for yourself when you're writing the bullets under your job titles: "You're not allowed to use more than one keyword in a sentence," says Church.

Sentences that are more than '25 words'

In a similar vein, avoid run-on sentences.

"All of these sentences should be less than 25 words maximum," says Church. "Probably even shorter than that. Because the goal of a resume is for me to very quickly understand what you've done."

Harkening back to recruiters' time crunch, they'll likely have just "three-to-five seconds" to dedicate to your resume, Taylor previously told Make It . If the sentences describing your accomplishments are too long, they won't necessarily take the time to read them. By writing concise phrases, you're helping recruiters get to the punchline of your impact right away, instead of having to look for it among many words.

"Time is the enemy in life and is the enemy in business," says Church. "The faster that we can move, the faster that we can solve problems."

View installed add-ins

You can directly install add-ins from this page or select  More Add-ins  to explore.

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select the  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to view the details for and right-click to select  Add-in details  option.

Install an add-in

Tip:  If you selected  Home  >  Add-ins , directly install popular add-ins from the menu that appears, or select  More Add-ins to view more options. 

Select  Add  from the add-in you want to install.

Manage installed add-ins

To manage and view information about your installed add-ins, perform the following:

Select  File > Get Add-ins .   Alternatively, select  Home  >  Add-ins > More add-ins .

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select the  My Add-ins tab.

Select  Manage My Add-ins . This opens the Office Store page in your preferred browser with a list of your installed add-ins.

Remove an add-in

To remove an add-in you installed, follow these steps.

Select  File  > Get Add-ins . Alternatively, select  Home > Add-ins .

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to remove and right click to select  Remove  option.

Note:  Add-ins that appear in the  Admin Managed  section of the Office Add-ins dialog can only be removed by your organization's administrator.

Cancel an add-in subscription

To discontinue your subscription to an add-in, do the following:

Open the Microsoft 365 application and select the Home  tab.

Select  Add-ins from the ribbon,   then select  More Add-ins .

Select the My Add-ins tab   to view your existing add-ins.

Select  Manage My Add-ins .

Under the Payment and Billing section, choose Cancel Subscription .

Select  OK ,   then Continue .

Once you've cancelled your subscription, you should see a message that says "You have cancelled your app subscription" in the comments field of your add-in list.

Manage an add-in's access to your devices

Note:  The information in this section only applies to Excel on the web, Outlook on the web, PowerPoint on the web, and Word on the web running in Chromium-based browsers, such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

When an installed add-in requires access to your devices, such as your camera or microphone, you will be shown a dialog with the option to allow, allow once, or deny permission.

If you select  Allow , the add-in will have access to the requested devices. The permission you grant persists until you uninstall the add-in or until you clear the cache of the browser where the add-in is running.

If you select  Allow Once , the add-in will have access to the requested devices until it's relaunched in the browser.

If you select  Deny , the add-in won't be able to access the requested devices. This persists until you uninstall the add-in or until you clear the cache of the browser where the add-in is running.

If you want to change an add-in's access to your devices after selecting  Allow  or  Deny , you must first uninstall the add-in or clear your browser cache.

In The King’s English (1906), lexicographers H. W. Fowler and F. G. Fowler advised, “Prefer the single word to the circumlocution.” It’s good advice: using more words than necessary to convey a point can confuse and annoy one’s audience. Circumlocution itself combines two Latin elements: the prefix circum- , meaning “around,” and locutio , meaning “speech.” In essence, circumlocution may be thought of as “roundabout speech.” Since at least the early 16th century, English writers have used circumlocution with disdain, naming a thing to stop, or better yet, to avoid altogether. Charles Dickens used the word to satirize political runarounds in the 1857 novel Little Dorrit with the creation of the fictional Circumlocution Office, a government department that delayed the dissemination of information and just about everything else.

WVXU: Test your word puzzle skills with a Cincinnati Edition-themed Hink Pink

Uc english professor is a writer who also creates word games.

On a segment of WVXU’s Cincinnati Edition host Lucy May spoke with word puzzle experts Anna Shechtman and Michael Griffith about the origins and popularity of word games over time.   

For example, the free web based word game "Wordle" became popular during the pandemic when people were isolate and looking for distractions.

“It (Wordle) can be a really gratifying way of maintaining social connection,” Griffith, a professor of English at the University of Cincinnati, told May of still playing the game daily with a friend group.

Griffith, author of “The Speaking Stone” a non-fiction book about Spring Grove Cemetery, says his interest in word games started a few years ago while researching a character for a new novel.

From there his word games interest turned to developing games called “Hink Pink”, which are solved with two, three and four syllable words that rhyme. His Hink Pink puzzles appear in summer editions of The Southern Review.

Griffith also created a Hink Pink word puzzle for listeners to call in and solve, with the answer being "Lucy May/ Juicy Talk." 

The experts also discussed word games in the digital age and the rise in popularity of word games during the pandemic.

What is wordplay?

Wordplay is typically defined as “verbal wit” or, putting it another way, using words in a clever or fun way. For example, a commonly cited example of wordplay is the pun . A pun humorously uses a word with multiple different meanings and/or different words with similar sounds. An example of a pun could be I don’t play cards with big cats because they are all cheetahs.

Wordplay is frequently used both in literature and poetry. But why?

Functions of wordplay in poetry

On a basic level, a poet can use wordplay to show how clever and witty they are to an audience. Spinning that around, wordplay can also be used to make an audience aware of how clever and witty they are when they recognize what the poet has done. Making an audience feel clever is a good way to hook them in and establish a good connection so that they are more likely to enjoy the poem. Even if the wordplay isn’t groundbreaking, just making a reader laugh can increase their joy when reading a poem. 

Getting more complex, a poet may use wordplay to enhance the language or effect of their poem. For example, a suspenseful poem may use harsh-sounding words to increase the tension or a gentle poem may use cute or soothing words to relax a reader. Relatedly, a poet may use words with multiple meanings to create metaphors or hidden meanings in their poem.  

More pragmatically, a poet simply might use wordplay to make their particular poem more unique or more interesting to make it stand out.

Types of wordplay

There are many different types of wordplay out there. We’ve looked at 14 different types of wordplay before , but not all varieties of wordplay even have names. Often, a poet does something entirely new and witty with words that has never been done before. That is the fun of wordplay—you can play around and see what kinds of fun things you make! Here are a few examples of different types of poetic wordplay that have names:

• Palindrome: A word or line that reads the same forward and backward. 
• Pangram: A line or poem that includes every letter of the alphabet.
• Alliteration: Using words that start with the same letter or similar-sounding beginnings. 
• Rhyme: Using words that have similar sounds, especially endings.
• Assonance: Using similar-sounding vowel sounds to rhyme.
• Consonance: Using similar-sounding consonant sounds to rhyme.
• Onomatopoeia: Using words that sound like what they mean. 
• Oxymoron: Creating a phrase using words that don’t seem to go well together.
• Neologism: Creating new words.
• Portmanteau: Combining two words together.
• Chiasmus: Reversing the order of words in parallel lines.
• Kenning: Using a metaphorical or poetic phrase to refer to something.

Examples of wordplay

OK, enough with the definitions. Let’s read some poetry! The following poems use different types of wordplay in interesting ways.

“Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll: Neologisms and nonsense words

AFK Journey – The Best Teams to Build and Use

AFK Journey is an intricately designed Idle RPG with flashy anime-style vibes. Exploring the vast, unknown mysteries of this magical land is as enticing as the overall theme of the game. However, as you progress, you will soon hit a wall that is only possible by building synergized team compositions. Do not worry, as we will be going through some of the best teams you can build as a beginner .

Team #1. The Meta Team

The heroes included in this team are as follows:

• Thoran (Front)
• Antandra (Mid)
• Cecia (Back)
• Smokey & Meerky (Back)

This team configuration works well in a variety of combat scenarios due to its strong frontline, which heavy damage dealers and potent healers support. We use Thoran as a damage absorber in this team. He has one chance to resurrect, giving other Heroes an advantage to deliver as much early damage as they can.

Position Antandra behind Thoran for the best usage. Antandra is a Tank by nature, although she also plays a DPS role. She also has a fantastic knockback effect in her ultimate that disrupts the enemy’s formation. Cecia should remain close to the rear Supporters. You want her in the safe haven where she may regain her energy and call her demonic beast, Mr. Carlyle. Together with Smokey and Koko, defend the team. Both of these characters can heal the squad and lessen the damage. They are sturdy enough to protect the squishy heroes from incoming assailants.

Team #2. The Early Game Dream Team

• Lucius (Front)
• Brutus (Front)
• Hewynn (Back)

This composition consists of one Tank, one Healer/Support, and two Damage Dealers. Because of its well-balanced attack-defense ratio, the squad has a high victory rate in first-round matches. Use Brutus to breach the enemy’s front line. For five seconds, he gains invincibility, which lets subsequent attackers breach the defense.

Lucius should assist DPS heroes. Put him in front of Antandra and Brutus so that he can use his Ultimate to protect them. Using Antandra, disrupt the enemy’s counter-tactical. Her Ultimate shoots enemy warriors away with a knockback effect. Place her behind Brutus and Lucius. Keep Cecia safe in the rear. As she gathers energy for her Ultimate strike on Mr. Carlyle, let her chip away at the enemy’s hit points. Hewynn can help the team heal. To keep her safe, place her in the tile farthest from the front. When the HP on your team is dangerously low, use her Ultimate ability for quick regeneration.

Team-Building Tips and Tricks

Here are some core tips and tricks to help you build a strong team according to the heroes you have:

• Wave-Based Combat : Keep in mind that AFK Journey has wave-based combat where your frontline emerges first in the combat, followed by your mid-line and back-line. Ensure you put the strongest first in the line-up (ideally a Tank) followed by squishy heroes (ideally DPS/Supports).
• Range —Make sure your team comp has heroes within the same range brackets. Ideally, bring heroes with low-mid range so they stick together. If one hero has a longer range, they can be left out and prone to enemy assassins.
• Synergy – Heroes should be paired so that their effects complement or enhance one another’s. For instance, the protective shields that Brutus, Lucius, and Antandra all possess improve the team’s overall toughness.
• Faction Bonuses —A faction bonus provides you with stronger stats and abilities, but it can also prevent you from using the best heroes available on your account. Do not overthink this aspect.
