12 Jul BEST TRAVEL MARKETING AGENCIES IN 2024

Travel is a prevalent pastime. In fact, the initial UNWTO World Tourism Barometer for the year reports that international tourism concluded 2023 at 88% of pre-pandemic levels, recording approximately 1.3 billion international arrivals! So, it’s no wonder businesses are looking for ways to tap into this lucrative market. If you’re one of those businesses, then you might be wondering if working with a travel marketing agency is the right move for you.

A good marketing agency can help increase traffic to your website and bring in more tourists. But with so many travel marketing agencies out there, how do you choose the right one?

Numerous marketing agencies focus on catering specifically to the travel sector. When selecting a marketing agency for your travel business, several key factors warrant consideration. Firstly, evaluating their depth of experience and specialized knowledge within the travel industry is crucial. Top Travel Marketing Agencies in 2024 – Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a travel marketing agency.

Travel marketing agencies are companies that specialize in marketing travel products and services to consumers. They create and execute marketing campaigns, and work with tour operators, hotel chains, cruise lines, and other travel-related businesses to promote their products.

Travel marketing agencies use a variety of tactics to reach potential customers, including online advertising, search engine optimization, social media marketing, and email marketing. They also often have relationships with travel bloggers and other online influencers who can help promote their clients’ products.

Good travel marketing agencies will have a deep understanding of the travel industry and of the online landscape. They’ll also have extensive experience in creating and executing successful marketing campaigns.

How much does it cost to hire a travel marketing agency?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the cost of hiring a travel marketing agency will depend on a number of factors, including the size and scope of your project, the location of your target market, and the specific services you require.

That said, in general, you can expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 per month for a comprehensive travel marketing package that includes brand development, social media management, content marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO).

Typically travel marketing agencies will charge a percentage of the ad spend. For example, if you’re spending $10,000 on ads, the agency may charge 10-20% of that, or $1,000-$2,000.

There are also agencies that charge monthly retainers. This can be a set fee each month (say $5,000/month), or it can be a variable fee based on the scope of work. For example, an agency might charge $500-$1,500/month for basic consulting services, and then an additional 10-20% of ad spend if you decide to use their media buying services.

What is the best marketing strategy for travel agency?

The best marketing strategy for a travel agency depends on various factors such as the target audience, budget, resources, and specific goals. However, here are some effective marketing strategies that many travel agencies find successful:

1. Content Marketing : Create compelling and informative content through blog posts, articles, videos, and social media posts. Provide valuable information about travel destinations, tips, and experiences to attract and engage potential customers.

2.  Social Media Marketing : Utilize platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest to showcase stunning visuals of destinations, share travel stories, run contests, and engage with followers. Influencer partnerships can also amplify reach and credibility.

3.  Search Engine Optimization (SEO) : Optimize your website content and structure to rank higher in search engine results for relevant keywords. This can increase organic traffic to your site and attract potential customers actively searching for travel services.

4.  Email Marketing : Build an email list of interested subscribers and send targeted campaigns with personalized travel deals, destination recommendations, and exclusive offers. Automated drip campaigns can nurture leads and encourage conversions.

5. Paid Advertising : Invest in pay-per-click (PPC) advertising on search engines like Google and Bing, as well as social media platforms, to target specific demographics and promote travel packages, deals, and promotions.

6. Partner with Influencers and Affiliates : Collaborate with travel influencers and bloggers to promote your agency and destinations to their followers. Affiliate marketing programs can also incentivize partners to drive sales and bookings for your agency.

7. Customer Reviews and Testimonials : Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and testimonials on your website, social media, and review platforms like TripAdvisor. Positive feedback can build trust and credibility, attracting new customers.

8.  Offer Unique Experiences : Differentiate by offering unique travel experiences, curated itineraries, or niche services tailored to specific interests or demographics.

9. Community Engagement : Participate in local events, sponsor travel-related activities, and engage with travel communities and forums online to increase brand visibility and establish your agency as an authority in the industry.

10. Data Analysis and Optimization : Continuously analyze the performance of your marketing efforts using analytics tools and adjust your strategies based on insights and feedback to improve results over time.

By combining these strategies and adapting them to fit your agency’s unique strengths and target audience, you can develop a comprehensive marketing approach that drives awareness, engagement, and bookings for your travel business.

How to choose the right travel marketing agency?

There are a few factors to consider when choosing the right travel marketing agency for your needs. The first is what services you need from the agency. Do you need help with planning and strategy, designing marketing materials, executing promotional campaigns, or something else entirely? Once you know what services you need, research agencies that specialize in those services.

Next, take a look at the travel marketing agencies’ previous work. See if their style and approach fit with what you’re looking for. Make sure to also read reviews from former clients to get an idea of whether or not they were happy with the results they achieved working with the agency.

Another important consideration is cost. Travel marketing agencies can range in price. So, when you’re evaluating travel marketing agencies, it’s important to ask about their pricing structure up front so that you can make sure it aligns with your own budget.

How much do travel marketing agencies make?

It is difficult to give a precise answer, as the amount that travel marketing agencies make can vary greatly depending on the size and scope of the agency, as well as the services that they offer. However, a general estimate would be that travel marketing agencies charge anywhere from 10-25% of a travel company’s total budget for their services.

So, if a travel company has a $1 million budget, then the marketing agency would earn between $100,000 and $250,000 for their work. Keep in mind that this is just a general estimate and that prices can vary drastically depending on the specifics of each situation.

What is travel marketing?

Travel marketing is the process of planning and executing a marketing strategy to promote a destination, travel experience, or tourism product. This can include advertising, public relations, and social media efforts. Travel marketers must understand their target audience and create campaigns that will resonate with them. They also need to be familiar with the different types of travel products and services available.

There are many different ways of travel marketing. Some of the most common methods include advertising in print, online, and on television; creating website content that is optimized for search engines; conducting public relations campaigns; and using social media.

Travel marketers need to have a good understanding of their target audience and travel marketing requirements. They need to know what interests them and what motivates them to travel. Additionally, they should be aware of the different types of travel products and services available through travel marketing so that they can create campaigns that are relevant to their audience.

Successful travel marketing requires a lot of research and careful planning. Marketers must identify their goals and develop strategies that will help them achieve them. They also need to track their progress so that they can make necessary adjustments along the way.

Why is travel marketing important?

One of the most important aspects of marketing for the travel industry is travel marketing. Travel marketing is the process of promoting and selling holidays and other types of travel. It involves creating campaigns that persuade people to book holidays and travel packages.

There are many reasons why travel marketing is important. Firstly, it is a very effective way of reaching potential customers. Online travel accounts for a large percentage of all travel bookings, so businesses that neglect online marketing are likely to lose out on a lot of business.

Another reason why travel marketing is important is that it allows businesses to target specific markets. For example, a business might focus its marketing efforts on attracting tourists from a particular country or region. This allows businesses to tailor their products and services to meet the needs of these customers.

Finally, travel marketing is important because it helps businesses build brand awareness. A strong brand image can be incredibly valuable for a company, as it can help attract new customers and encourage loyalty among existing customers. A good travel marketing campaign can help create a positive image for a company’s brand and increase its visibility in the minds of consumers.

Why is travel marketing so popular?

There is a multitude of reasons why travel marketing is popular. One of the most obvious reasons is that people love to travel. They enjoy experiencing new cultures, landscapes, and foods. Additionally, traveling provides people with an opportunity to learn about different parts of the world and develop a better understanding of other cultures.

Another reason why travel marketing is popular is that it helps to promote tourism. When people see beautiful pictures or videos of a place they want to visit, it entices them to do so. In addition, when people visit a new place they often spend money on food, souvenirs, and other items. Thus travel marketing helps to boost the local economy and create jobs.

Finally, travel marketing is popular because it can be very effective in building brand awareness. When people see a great ad for a destination they want to visit, it often inspires them to do some additional research on the place. Travel marketing can lead to them booking a trip and spending money on related services.

The Role of Social Media in Travel Marketing: Best Practices and Case Studies

Back in 2016, then Marriott’s chief global marketing officer, Karin Timpone spoke to CNBC about their social media travel marketing service and incorporation of geo-fencing technology.

If someone posts a photo from one of its properties, her team will reach out and contact the front desk to let them know. The hotel will often then reach out to the customers and offer complimentary upgrades — something to show that Marriott values their presence.

Earlier, a music video for “I’ll Show You” featuring Justin Bieber at the Fjadrárgljúfur canyon in Iceland. A few years later, tourism to this once-quiet town nearly doubled. The video on YouTube has over 500 million views since 2015.

Given the general rise in income levels and jobs going remote, people find more time to take frequent travel breaks, showcasing the need for effective digital marketing services to tap into the growing travel market

And social media has only accentuated this trend ,

  • By hosting engaging travel content and motivating reviews
  • By increasing travel FOMO (Fear-Of-Missing-Out)
  • By minimizing unpleasant surprises at the destination

Given the scope of social media in travel marketing services , this blog discusses best practices followed by interesting case studies for inspiration.

The Power of Social Media in Travel Marketing

  • Expedia’s 2023 Traveler Value Index noted almost 35% of travelers turn to social media for holiday inspiration.
  • Furthermore, 75% of respondents chose a specific destination inspired by social media as per Amex’s 2023 Global Travel Trends Report .
  • Travel Live Streaming is becoming increasingly popular on social media, with 60% of travelers saying they have watched a live stream of a travel experience.
  • 74% of travelers use social media while traveling, while 92% of consumers trust word of mouth and UGC more than other forms of advertising, thus making UGC on social media crucial for any travel marketing campaign.

Best Practices for Successful Social Media Travel Marketing

Top 5 things travelers use social media to research – Destinations, Hotels, Activities, Attractions, and Restaurants. Let’s list out travel marketing best practices to get the most attention from social media users.

B2B travel marketing

Take a que from social media strategy of Marriott Hotels . Their Instagram account features stunning photos of their hotels, while their Twitter account is more focused on sharing news and updates.

Invest in high-quality, visually appealing content, including photos and videos. Use storytelling techniques to capture the essence of your travel experiences.

Encourage user-generated content (UGC) by running contests or using branded hashtags. UGC refers to any content that is created and shared by users or consumers of a product, service, or brand rather than by the company or organization itself.

Travel marketers can leverage UGC in the following way:

  • Display UGC on their social channels to engage other users as it signals authenticity.
  • Monitoring UGC can become your informal market research to upgrade your services in-time.
  • UGC also helps build employer brand which results in team retention.

Furthermore, you may leverage the new YouTube app feature that lists video recommendations according to thumbnail color. As a travel marketer, you can explore more such strategies to increase views on YouTube here .

The Role of Social Media in Travel Marketing Best Practices and Case Studies Example 3 - ColorWhistle

Highlight safety measures and sustainable practices in your travel marketing, as these have become critical concerns for travelers post-pandemic.

Take inspiration from our previous blog where we have discussed Innovative Travel Marketing Campaigns From Around The World .

In a bid to blindly replicate brand marketing successes on social media, many end up creating “self-congratulating” content.

Recreating trendy content give a false impression to the marketing team about better reach. The truth beholds, unless original thought is put to market product/service, the social media marketing will lead to poor brand awareness, let alone lead generation.

Consistency is Key. Develop a content calendar to maintain a consistent posting schedule. Consistency helps keep your audience engaged and informed.

Share travel stories, itineraries, and personal experiences. Storytelling creates a deeper connection with your audience. Use live streaming feature to promote your brand often. Learn more tips on travel live streaming here .

You can use hashtag strategy to expand your content’s reach. Create a branded hashtag for your campaigns and encourage followers to use it.

However, we feel social media hashtags are overused. Hashtags are annoying and they hijack conversations. Moreover, users may relate social media posts with many hashtags as spam.

Here is an interesting blog by Hannah Macready where she discusses the best use of hashtags for your social media campaigns in 2024 and beyond.

Partner with social media influencers who align with your brand and target audience. Influencers can provide authentic recommendations and reach new followers.

Look for long-term association with the right content creator on social media for consistent engagement of new and existing users. Influencer marketing tools like Ylytics , HypeAuditor , and others can help you find the right social media influencers.

How Travel Marketers Want People to Search on Google?

The Role of Social Media in Travel Marketing Best Practices and Case Studies - ColorWhistle

Enter a search query -> Your brand website ad appears -> Book your services

But How Do People Actually Search?

Enter a search query -> Google analyzes and displays results per keyword -> Visitor clicks -> Interrupted by WhatsApp chat -> Sleeps.

… a week later…

Notices a display ad from your brand -> Visits the landing page -> Bookmarks it -> Checks out the brand profile on Instagram -> Share it with spouse -> Logs out

… 2 days later in the office…

Visits your site -> Confirm their bookings.

Use paid advertising options on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to target specific demographics and promote your travel offerings. Consider retargeting ads to re-engage users who have shown interest in your travel products or services.

Use geo-targeting to reach users in specific locations, especially if you’re promoting local or regional travel experiences.

Use analytics tools provided by social media platforms to track the performance of your posts and campaigns. Adjust your strategies based on data insights, focusing on what works best for your audience.

Continuously monitor social media trends and adapt your strategy to incorporate new features and technologies. Keep an eye on emerging platforms that may provide new opportunities for travel marketing.

It is important to develop a crisis management plan to address any negative incidents or crises that may arise on social media. Swift and appropriate responses are crucial.

Further, experiment with different types of content, posting times, and ad creatives to determine what resonates best with your audience.

Challenges and Pitfalls in Social Media Travel Marketing

Social media travel marketing offers significant opportunities, but it also comes with various challenges and potential pitfalls that marketers should be aware of, like

  • Platform Algorithm Changes: Social media platforms frequently update their algorithms, affecting organic reach and engagement. Marketers need to adapt strategies to stay visible to their audience.
  • Privacy and Data Protection: Stricter privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR) require marketers to handle user data responsibly. Mismanagement can lead to legal issues and reputational damage.
  • Ad Saturation: Social media users may become overwhelmed with advertising, leading to ad fatigue. Marketers must strike a balance between promotion and providing value to the audience.
  • Language and Cultural Sensitivity: Misinterpretations or insensitivity to local languages and cultures can lead to backlash. Marketers must research and tailor content appropriately for different regions.
  • Changing Travel Behavior: Travel behaviors and preferences change over time, influenced by various factors like technology, health concerns, and economic conditions. Marketers need to stay updated and adapt accordingly.
  • Over-Tourism Concerns: Social media can contribute to over-tourism by popularizing specific destinations or attractions, leading to overcrowding and environmental issues. Travel marketers must promote responsible tourism.

The new offerings include ski butlers who will tend to your every need; high-altitude restaurants, bars, and stores; and the ability to ski off-piste at crowd-free mountains. While these options all cost more than your average ski trip, people are willing to spend on them , especially after the pent-up demand of the pandemic and the willingness to spend more after months or years of saving.

Ski butlers or concierges have also seen a surge in demand. These employees will show up on the slopes with extra gloves and boots, act as instructors, and help you determine the best place to have lunch or the most desirable mountain for a morning session. Rupert Longsdon, the CEO of Oxford Ski Company, said that just 5 percent of clients who rented luxury chalets five years ago would also book a ski butler. Nowadays, it’s more like 20 percent.

“The restaurants, the ski butlers, they’re all part of the progression of better service and more luxury, something clients are after,” Longsdon told The Wall Street Journal .

6 of the most unusual Russian churches

media travel services

1. The Temple of All Religions in Kazan

Source: Wikipedia.org

Although the roof of this edifice is crowned by domes with Muslim crescents and Christian crosses, the "Universal Temple" was not conceived as a place for people of different religions to pray together.

Ildar Khanov, an artist and philanthropist from Kazan, built the temple hoping for the eventual end of religious conflicts and the invention of universal monotheism as a religion for all the people of the world, so no services are held here. Since the artist's death in 2013, the unconventional landmark has become a popular tourist attraction, maintained at the expense of private sponsors.

2. The Church of Our Lady of Vladimir in Bykovo

This two-story neo-Gothic castle in the settlement of Bykovo 40 kilometers away from Moscow looks nothing like your average village church. Its construction was ordered at the end of the 18th century by General Mikhail Izmailov, the master of the Bykovo estate. To build it, he hired architect Vasily Bazhenov, the one who had displeased Empress Catherine II with his design for her Moscow residence, Tsaritsyno. In the 1930s, the church was desecrated: After being looted, it served as a warehouse. Later, it housed a sewing factory. After its renovation in 1989, the church has been open every day, with services held on Saturdays and Sundays.

3. The Church of Our Lady of the Sign in Dubrovitsy

Prince Boris Golitsyn, a supporter of the young emperor-to-be Peter I, erected the Church of Our Lady of the Sign in 1703 in Dubrovitsy, one of his estates near Moscow (60 kilometers away). The church, which is the same age as St. Petersburg, was turned into a museum in the early 20th century, survived the wave of cathedral demolitions in the 1930s and did not reopen its doors to believers until 60 years later.

4. Kostomarovo Cave Convent

Historians have not come to a unanimous conclusion as to who dug the caves and built the churches in the chalky rock of the Voronezh Region (800 kilometers away from Moscow): The local community of hermit monks in the 17th century or the Christians who came here from Byzantium in the age of Iconoclasm in the 8th century. Kostomarovo Convent is one of the oldest strongholds of Christianity in modern Russia.

After the revolution of 1917, the convent was closed, but many of the hermits continued living in caves secretly. Two and a half decades later, WWII engulfed the convent: the surrounding area was occupied in 1942-1943, and locals came to seek refuge within its walls.

In 1997, the convent resumed religious services: in summer, they are held in the Cave Temple of the Savior, and in winter, they are held above ground, in the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos.

5. The "Easter Cake and Paskha" Church in St. Petersburg

Source: Wikipedia.org

The unconventional design of this 18th-century church was no architect's whim – it was ordered by the commissioner, Prince Alexander Vyazemsky. Consisting of a church and a belfry, the ensemble imitates the shapes of traditional Russian dishes: Paskha , a pyramid-shaped dessert made with tvorog , and kulich , the Easter cake, a sweet-dough pastry with a spherical top. These dishes are cooked only once a year - at Easter.

6. The Beaded Church of St. Anastasia the Pharmakolytria in Crimea

Source: mitrofanova-m.livejournal.com

In the Tash-Air Gorge, on a mountain slope near the cave town of Kachi Kalyon in Crimea (1500 kilometers away from Moscow), a tiny priory bearing the name of Saint Anastasia of Sirmium is nestled away from prying eyes.  Just travel for 15 minutes up the slope from the foot of the mountain along a narrow path paved with old car tyres through thick shrubs on the edge of a precipice - and you’re there.

Like most churches in the USSR, it suffered a fatal blow - it was detonated in 1932, and the renovation was begun only in 2005. The entrance shaft, neglected for decades, contained very humid air that was quickly destroying the paint on the walls. This is why the monks have decorated the cave temple by encrusting it with thousands of beads and multicolored stones, each of them unique.

Since the 8th century, Crimea has seen many changes of residents and authorities, but St. Anastasia Church has survived all of them: It was admired by 19th-century travelers and is still cherished by modern-day explorers of the peninsula.

Updated travel information for Mexican citizens coming to Canada

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years. We have worked to ensure North America is the world’s most competitive economic region and maintain strong bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. To support travel and people-to-people connections between Canada and Mexico, while also preserving the integrity of our immigration system, the Government of Canada is adjusting its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.

February 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – Ottawa – Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years.

As of February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air on a Mexican passport will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). With the high number of Mexican citizens currently holding US visas, the majority will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. Those who do not meet these conditions will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This responds to an increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned. It is an important step to preserve mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, while also ensuring the sound management of our immigration and asylum systems.

The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work or study permit will not change. Mexican citizens who want to work in Canada will continue to have access to a wide number of existing labour pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

Canada supports ongoing travel, tourism and business with Mexico. We will continue to work with the Government of Mexico to strengthen our regular pathways to immigration, and with our provincial and territorial counterparts to support a system of managed migration as well as to support those in need of protection. Canada is expanding its network of visa application centres in Mexico to better serve these clients. Today’s action will relieve pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services, while preserving mobility for Mexican citizens who want to come to Canada.

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) is a vital example of the mutually beneficial migration that we seek to promote regionally and globally. Canada is ready to work with Mexico to build on this program, through the modernization of a new SAWP bilateral agreement, to offer Mexican workers new opportunities, through the incorporation of year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood and primary food processing into the program. This will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of the Canada–Mexico relationship.

Canada is continuously monitoring the impacts of its visa policies for both visa-exempt and visa-required countries, as well as asylum claim trends. These challenges are not limited to one country. Any adjustment to Canada’s travel requirements are made to preserve the integrity and sustainability of our asylum and immigration systems.

More information about these changes, including for people in transit or with upcoming flights, is available on IRCC’s website .

“Mexico is an important partner to Canada. We will continue to welcome Mexican temporary workers, students, visitors and immigrants who bring diverse skills and important contributions to our economy and communities. We strive for balance between the movement of people between our two great countries, and the need to relieve pressure on our immigration system so we can provide protection to those who need it the most.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Asylum claims made by Mexican citizens reached a record high in 2023 at a time when Canada’s asylum system, housing and social services were already under significant pressure. The majority of these claims (approximately 60%) were either rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, or withdrawn or abandoned by the applicant.

In 2023 alone, asylum claims from Mexican citizens accounted for 17% of all claims made that year from all nationalities around the world. The country’s asylum claim rate has risen significantly since the visa was first lifted in 2016 (from 260 claims in 2016 to 23,995 claims in 2023).

All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA —if they are eligible.

Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid, and they can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit. Mexican visitors who are already in Canada on an eTA can stay for as long as they are authorized (up to six months from the date they arrive in Canada). However, if they plan to leave Canada and wish to return, they must have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).

Most approved visa applicants receive multiple-entry visas, which allow them to visit Canada as many times as they want, for up to 10 years, or until their passport expires.

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air. IRCC first began expanding its eTA program to eligible citizens from visa-required countries in 2017. Mexico will now be among 15 countries whose citizens can to fly to Canada on an eTA, instead of a visa, if they meet certain requirements .

Expedia to Eliminate 1,500 Jobs as Travel Growth Moderates

  • Online travel company reducing about 9% of roles globally
  • Firm had announced CEO transition, disappointing outlook

Expedia Group Inc. is eliminating about 9% of its workforce after announcing a leadership transition earlier this month while the online travel company attempts to revive growth and regain market share.

The Seattle-based firm will cut about 1,500 jobs across the globe so it can “invest in core strategic areas for growth,” a company spokesperson said in an email. “Given the recent completion of many significant technical milestones in Expedia Group’s transformation, the business continues to evaluate the appropriate allocation of resources to ensure the most important work continues to be prioritized,” the spokesperson added.

  • Train derails causing travel chaos on major route into London

The front wheels of the train came off the track on the way into London Waterlo

Passengers had to be evacuated from a train today after it hit an object and derailed while travelling into London .

The front wheels came off the track at around 5.50am, sending sparks ‘flying past the window’ in the early morning darkness and causing power in the carriages to cut off.

Commuters using one of London’s busiest stations have now been warned to expect rail misery all day today, with all services between Woking and London Waterloo blocked.

A photograph of the derailed train wheels shows it wedged on pebbles in the gap between a rail, while another image shows damage to the sleepers due to the impact.

One passenger on board the train this morning told Metro.co.uk he was waiting on board for an hour after the crash before he could be taken off.

Workers on the line between Surrey and London Waterloo this morning

‘I was preparing to get off at Surbiton when there was a large jolt’, he said. ‘Immediately the train started an emergency stop; sparks were flying up past the window clearly visible as it was still dark.

‘It felt like a long time for the train to come to a standstill. I was of the feeling that the train had perhaps hit a trolley or something abandoned on the track.

‘A short time after coming to a halt the power went off on the train. Emergency lighting came on.

‘It took a time for the guard to take stock of what had happened but did inform passengers that the train had hit an object on the track. The guard was very proactive about checking passengers up and down the train.’

The passenger, who had boarded at Basingstoke, told how he helped others off the train when they were able to leave via a disused platform at Walton-on-Thames.

‘Looking under the train as I helped people off of the train there was obvious damage to the sleepers under the train all along the track,’ he said.

And he was full of praise for the staff involved for handling the shocking incident with professionalism: ‘I must applaud the staff who were excellent in challenging circumstances. I am not always the biggest fan as a 20+ year commuter but today both driver and guard were superb.’

He added: ‘Hope the driver is okay; can’t imagine what she went through.’

Travel problems today will also affect journeys to Haslemere and Portsmouth, which use the same line.

‘It’s likely to take us some time to get the railway open,’ SWR said. ‘We’ll keep you updated on the repairs and timescales for reopening as soon we know more.’

Other services not using the same line are also expected to be hit with delays due to passengers and trains having to find other routes.

SWR said the incident was due to an ‘operational incident’ between Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge.

Elsewhere in London, frustrated passengers were turned away from Euston underground station at rush hour.

England footballer Lianne Sanderson, who won 50 caps for the national team before retiring, shared a photo of the shutters down outside the entrance while disgruntled-looking people stood around outside.

‘Sorry how can you just close the underground,’ she tweeted. ‘Pull the shutters across at Euston in the middle of rush hour and give 0 explanation? Those that travel daily on these trains will feel me. Our system is gone. Avanti, transport the works.’

Flooded with questions about the Waterloo line from concerned travellers on X (formerly known as Twitter), an SWR operative told passengers that ticket restrictions have been lifted so they can travel on any train including on Great Western Railway services.

Commuters were also told their tickets will be valid for travel tomorrow instead and were advised to speak to train guards about needing to use different stations as they would be able to ‘use their discretion’.

They added: ‘We currently have ticket acceptance in place with GWR. Please check before you travel again as this may get rescinded for a variety of different reasons.’

National Rail Enquiries said: ‘Due to a serious issue with the track at Walton-on Thames all lines are blocked. Please do not travel as there are no services currently operating.

‘Disruption is expected to last until the end of the day.’

The disruption comes a day after rail fares across England and Wales rose by nearly 5%.

Three arrests after 'gang rape' of influencer on round-the-world motorcycle trip in India

Police are searching for four others accused of gang-raping a tourist and beating her partner in the state of Jharkhand. The attack has sparked outrage in a country with a poor record for women's safety.

A Brazilian-Spanish tourist was allegedly gang raped in India and her partner attacked when they were camping during a motorcycle trip.

Indian police have detained three men and are searching for four others accused of taking part in the attack on Friday night.

Police found the couple, who are Spanish citizens, around 11pm local time on a roadside looking like they had been beaten, Pitamber Singh Kherwar, superintendent of police in Dumka in eastern India, told reporters.

He said the pair had told authorities "their modesty had been outraged" in an incident involving seven men, but he did not give further details.

The couple, who identified themselves as Vicente and Fernanda to Spanish TV channel Antena 3, said in a video interview on Saturday that the men raped Fernanda and hit her partner Vicente repeatedly.

"They raped me, they took turns while some watched and they stayed like that for about two hours," Fernanda, who has joint Brazilian-Spanish nationality, told the broadcaster.

They said they were camping because they could not find a hotel nearby.

They are travelling around the world on motorbikes, documenting their travels to almost 200,000 followers on their joint Instagram account.

There they published a video account of what happened in the attack. In the video, which is no longer available, Vicente said his mouth was "destroyed" after being hit with his helmet.

Fernanda said she had been beaten and raped by seven men, and they had also been robbed.

In a new video, Vicente and Fernanda, who appears with bruises on her face, thanked their Instagram followers for their support.

The Spanish Foreign Ministry said it was sending staff to the area and had been in touch with authorities, while its Brazilian counterpart said it had sought contact with the Brazilian citizen through its embassy in New Delhi and was available to offer every assistance.

Police superintendent Mr Kherwar said on Saturday one of the people detained had given the authorities the names of the other people involved. A forensic science laboratory was helping in the case, he said.

India has a poor record for women's safety, with more than 31,000 rapes reported in 2022.

The attack has sparked outrage in India. Many women shared their experiences of sexual violence on social media, as well as their frustrations over how it is dealt with.

Actor Richa Chadha called the attack "shameful" while comedian Vir Das called for the "strictest punishment" to show such violence would not be tolerated.

Actor Dulquer Salmaan said he was "crushed" to hear the news, writing on Instagram: "This should not happen to anyone anywhere."
