Travelling Band Screen

A Hubert water intake travelling band screen is also called ’travelling water screen’

A travelling band screen or traveling water screen is a self-cleaning fully automatic screen suitable to filter large flow rates in a water intake at a relatively fine filtration degree as a secondary step.

Every project intake location is different. Excavating and civil engineering cost vary from site to site and have a important influence on the choice of screening system, where the choice is often made between a travelling band screen or a drum screen .

Hubert hubert supplies his own designs where possible, however all systems are engineered as per your project specifications. If you prefer a different design, we can of course also supply this. We are happy to advise you to make the best choice and flow pattern for your project. When renovating existing installations (which have been in operation for many years), (dated) designs are often used or, if possible, the civil construction is adapted to a modern design.

Below you will find an explanation of frequent applied travelling band screens. See  Wikipedia .

Travelling Band or Water Screen

A hubert travelling band screen has a compact design.

The Hubert travelling band screen is the ‘heart’ of the ‘screening train’, often used used for (sea)water intakes as part of power plants and desalination plants, where big tidal differences can also play a role. It is more compact than a vertical drum screen, but it has still a high capacity. Quite common flow rates are 15.000 m3/h per screen, depending on customer requirements and the local situation at the intake. Today, a lot of Duplex and Super Duplex (PREN > 40) is used for screens.

A travelling band screen is typically installed in water intake systems downstream from coarse bar screens .

Woven mesh with a diameter of about 2-10 mm is used as relative fine filter medium.

Design, Construction and Operation

Hubert travelling band screens require only a small installation area due to the vertical construction. This type of screen is used in places where the construction area of the total cleaning installation is limited or where big differences occur between water levels.

The band water screen operates on a conveyor belt principle. The ‘conveyor belt’ is composed of mesh panels which are mounted between two endless heavy duty transport chains. The chains are driven by 2 sprockets.

The debris, trapped on the screens is removed by spray water jets and discharged through a flushed chute. The drive unit, flushing mechanism and debris hopper are located at deck level. The upper section above decl level is fitted with a metal or reinforced polyester composite cover.

Hubert traveling band sceens are available for different flow patterns.

Special designs can be provided with facilities for removing and discharging other debris like jellyfish and seawead. If this is not or insufficiently covered by the coarse screens in front of the screening system.

Skid or Embedded Configuration

Hubert travelling band screens can be configurated as a skid, which minimizes on-site mounting. The band screen can also be part of the civil construction and assembled on site (embedded).

BANDGUARD - Centre Flow Band Screen

BANDGUARD Bandumlaufrechen

Band_screen_cover2.jpg

BANDGUARD TM is a high efficiency dual flow traveling fine screen used in inlet works of a wastewater treatment plant. The high efficiency band screen prevents screenings accumulation and its exceptional capture rate significantly reduces maintenance costs in downstream equipment.

With the BANDGUARD TM screening is achieved by passing the sewage through a vertical band shaped screen curtain.  It comprises an assembly of plastic perforated panels, clipped and fastened into stainless steel frames which are fastened to stainless steel conveyor chains that form two endless loops.

The screenings enter the centre of the screen, inside of the screen curtain where solids are retained and transported out of the flow by driving the band, moving the dirty panels from the screening zone to the panel cleansing area.

The band is sprocket driven via a motor and gearbox. A spray bar fed by final or primary effluent is used to clean dirty panels before the panels are re-submerged. The cleaning system is orientated to achieve full panel cleaning whilst depositing all debris in the internal launder system, which feeds out through the side of the screen.

Each panel has replaceable side seals manufactured from UHMWPE fitted between the chain and panel to effect a close tolerance seal with the chain guide fitted to the screen structure.

The main structural side plates are designed and manufactured for strength and rigidity.

The high strength chains run in steel and UHMWPE guides and are driven by sprockets attached to the head shaft running in  adjustable bearing units.

The drive is from a close coupled motor and gearbox. Variable or Dual speed drives are available as options and the screens can be supplied to suit ATEX Zone 1 environments.

The BANDGUARD TM  is fully guarded by covers fastened to the main screen structure thus encasing odours and wash water aerosol. The screen can be supplied with odour extraction pipework flanges where requested.

The BANDGUARD TM can be inched forward and reverse, in case of mechanical stoppage.

  TRAVELING SCREENS > Band Screens

INTRODUCTION:

The band Screen built by FILTRAMAS, S.A. are specifically designed for continuous operation in fresh water intakes of rivers, dams or sea. They are of robust and durable design and in the double flow model guarantee an optimal filtration without the possibility of larger size solids of larger size than the installed light passing through.

DESCRIPTION:

The band screen are installed in channels (single flow or direct flow model), or in pitchers (double flow model). The band screen is composed by the following elements:

STRUCTURE : The structure of the band screen is composed by two sets of guides for the panel support chains. Each set is made up of a lower curve and one or more intermediate sections, bracing the uphill and downhill rails of the same section together to keep the correct measurement and alignment between them.

FILTERING PANELS : The support frames of the filtering mesh are of mechanically welded construction, guaranteeing a distance between them never superior to th e one allowed by the mesh size. A frame crossbar is designed and dimensioned to act as a bucket, thus allowing more effective removal of the brush to the collection channel provided on the working grounds .

PANEL CHAIN : The main chain carries the filter frames and is provided with steel bolts and bushings, with synthetic resin sliding rollers. The chain is tensioned from the upper head by a tensioning system and is equipped with special locks to ensure a proper seal between the moving parts and the static structure.

UPPER HEAD : The upper head connects the sliding guides of the main chain and supports the band grille drive assembly as well as the internal washing tube. The drive unit, consisting of a shaft, geared motor and drive gears, is installed on top of it.

COVER : For machine protection.

WASHING TUBE : The grille is equipped with a washing collector with spray nozzles.

Traveling screens.

Band screens are those equipments, installed in a channel or , which has a series of filtering surfaces in continuous movement. Its mission is to extract the suspended solids of a certain size that accompany the effluent. There are several types of band screens , depending on the characteristics of the effluent and the installation:

  • SCM Channel SCREEN
  • Micro- Screen

Other equipment

The objective of this equipment is to protect the WWTP or pumping well from the possible arrival of large objects capable of causing obstructions in the different units of the installation. This operation consists of passing the waste water through a screen that separates and evacuates the bulky materials dragged along. They will retain large-sized solids such as branches, leaves, paper, tree roots, plastics, wipes, rags, etc., preventing damage and blockages to pumps, valves, pipes and other elements present in subsequent treatment processes of the purification plant.

Geiger ® MultiDisc ®

Efficient fine screening is essential to protect pumps, condenser tubes, heat exchangers and other critical equipment, and is the last cleaning stage in the water intake process.

Geiger MultiDisc ®  Traveling Water Screens belong to the family of automatic Filtration Machines/Travelling Band Screens (10mm to 200 µm mesh size). The Geiger MultiDisc ®  has already been installed in over 200 intake channels worldwide on new and existing (brownfield) installations to successfully replace dual-flow and through-flow band screens; thus protecting condenser tubes and membrane plants against carry-over of debris and providing a better heat-rate.

The installation as a plug-in is very time and cost saving, since the Geiger MultiDisc ®  is supplied in a self-supporting frame. Due to its heavy-duty-design, compact channels and less turbulences (only one single and straight passage of the water through the filtre), low-maintenance fine screening with an operational life time of 35 years and longer, utilities worldwide embrace this proven technology.

Unique Features

  • Compact design = significant savings in construction costs
  • Fast and simple plug-in installation
  • Fish protection-compliant (EPA CWA 316b and EU-Habitat)
  • Low operating costs and only one maintenance-free side bar chain
  • Easy maintenance, mesh panels can be changed at floor level (no need for channel dewatering - less down time of plant)
  • Lower head-loss/(pressure loss): water passes through the screen only once (no brushes required)
  • Intensive and efficient cleaning of the mesh panels
  • Zero carryover of debris to the clean water side
  • Space/Footprint saving
  • Installation time saving
  • Self supporting frame
  • Less mussel growth thanks to straight channels
  • Highest flexibility/redundancy for the operator thanks to one pump per channel design

Suitable for the following markets

Desalination, potable water treatment.

travelling band screen animation

Over 200 installations worldwide during the last 14 years (approximately 40 of these are in nuclear power stations) are clear proof of the robust Geiger MultiDisc ® ’s success and effectiveness.

Zero carry-over of debris, one single passage of the water through the screen, and water jet cleaning (instead of brushes) optimize the cleaning efficiency, reduce pressure loss and minimize operation costs or downtimes.  Among other advantages this has made the MultiDisc ®  so popular and well-reputed for greenfield (new plants with shorter designed channels and highly redundant single pump bays) as well as brownfield (retrofitting/revamp/extension) projects.

The MultiDisc ®  Screen as a compact filtration machine is installed within the intake chamber across the direction of the water flow. A much smaller civil structure allows a saving in space, construction costs (less concrete, less scaffolding, no backwalls) and installation time. Significant savings on operational expenses (OPEX) thanks to a single centrally-guided chain and heavy duty design of the Geiger MultiDisc ®  complete the list of benefits.

The Geiger MultiDisc ®  screen base is composed of travelling sickle-shaped screen panels that are connected at their rear side to a revolving carrier chain running into a guide and driven by a sprocket wheel at the upper part. The screen panels are composed of perforated plastic plates or fine wire mesh. The sprocket wheel is coupled with a drive unit. A spray-water device is situated above the floor and is mounted behind the mesh panels, allowing a very intense cleaning of the upwards moving screen panels. The screen panels linked to the chain are guided on each side forming a unit together with the support. Raw water flows directly through the mesh panels. The fine debris retained on the surface of the ascending mesh panels and on built-in debris carriers is transported above floor level and is efficiently removed by means of a spray-water device. Geiger ®  screens such as the MultiDisc ®  are particularly fish-friendly and pre-approved according to the EPA 316b Clean Water Act (CWA) as the best state-of-the art fish protection Screen.

Technical data

From Intake Screens - Travelling Band Screens

Installed in a channel in which flows the water to be cleaned, the screen consists of a set of rectangular screening mesh panels carried by two endless chains. The panels travel up and down again between an upstream wall plate and a downstream partition with a central, outlet aperture set across the channel.

Purpose and Application

Image

Travelling screens are used to arrest the small debris contained in the water so that the downstream users remain unobstructed and clean (condensers, exchanges, spray-water circuits, membranes etc). Debris can be of all types including fish, shrimps, jellyfish, grass, man-made refuse, plastics, seaweed, etc. They are especially suited to deep pits. They are used in thermal and nuclear power plants, LNG terminals, desalination or fertilizer plants, drinking water and irrigation plants.

Description

Image

The water enters along both sides of the upstream wall-plate, flows through the upstream face of the panels on each side, where the debris are arrested. The water then flows out through the back, partition aperture.

The debris-laden panels travel up above deck level, around the top and down again. One or two spray pipes with fantail jet nozzles set on the down stream side of the panels within the screen's head structure, back-wash the panels, remove the debris which are projected into a collection trough. They travel in a deck flume to the debris disposal system (basket, separator, etc.)

The screens are normally stopped and are washed periodically when obstructed by debris. Permanent rotation can be provided.

3. Prompt Travelling Explanation

Prompt traveling is a technique that allows you to fine-tune your positive prompt to have precise control over specific details at designated time frames (frame numbers) within the final GIF or Video creation. In combination with AnimateDiff, we can now apply more influence over the visual aesthetics of our GIFs or videos, including factors like style, background, and clothing choices and many others elements.

Prompt travelling is a technique that can be employed within the positive prompt input field, as illustrated in the image below. You'll notice that our prompt differs from the typical format because it incorporates prompt travelling.

create-gifs-using-prompt-traveling-with-animatediff-a1111-prompt-travel-example-explanation.webp

  • Green Line : The first line represents the head prompt, which is not required. You have the flexibility to include multiple lines of head prompts. The head or base prompt serves as the foundational input for determining the overall appearance of the resulting video or GIF.
  • White Lines : The white lines are reserved for prompt travelling, following the pattern " frame number : prompt " Ensure that your frame numbers are in sequential order. These prompts show the modifications that will happen at certain time frames, along with the main prompt if you've added one.

4. AnimateDiff Settings (Txt2img)

If the installation is completed successfully, you will find an additional dropdown menu in both the txt2img and img2img tabs. To access additional information about the AnimateDiff extension, please feel free to explore the official AnimateDiff GitHub page .

let's navigate to the "txt2img" tab and scroll down to locate the 'AnimateDiff' dropdown, where we can adjust the settings for crafting our GIF animation. Below, we have provided the settings for generating a GIF animation:

create-gifs-using-prompt-traveling-with-animatediff-a1111-animatediff-settings.webp

  • Check the checkbox for "Enable AnimateDiff"
  • Motion module : mm_sd_v15_v2.ckpt (Feel free to experiment with different motion modules)
  • Number of frames : 48.
  • Frames Per Second (FPS) : 8 (Resulting in a 6-second GIF animation)
  • Closed loop : A (means that the extension will aggressively try to make the last frame the same as the first frame. The prompt travel will be interpolated to be a closed loop.)
  • Save format : GIF (Optionally, you can also choose "MP4")
  • The remaining settings can stay in their default state.

Our next step is to fine-tune the txt2img settings, specifically by utilizing "prompt travelling" within the prompt text field to change the end result of our GIF animation. We aim to make prompt adjustments every 16 frames, which equates to every 2 seconds. So, let's proceed!

5. Txt2img Settings (Prompt Travelling)

As we get more into the creative process, it's essential to understand the details of the txt2img settings. These settings are crucial for shaping the GIF animation, especially when used with prompt travelling.

Txt2Img Settings

In the "txt2img" section of the Stable Diffusion interface, we will move on to select the specified settings below:

create-gifs-using-prompt-traveling-with-animatediff-a1111-text-to-image-settings-hires-fix-upscaling.webp

  • Checkpoint : ToonYou
  • Positive Prompt : masterpiece, 30 year old women, cleavage, red hair, bun, ponytail, medium breast, desert, cactus vibe, sensual pose, (looking in the camera:1.2), (front view:1.2), facing the camera, close up, upper body 0: red dress 16: white dress 32: green dress
  • Negative Prompt : (worst quality:1.2), (low quality:1.2), (lowres:1.1), (monochrome:1.1), (greyscale), multiple views, comic, sketch, (((bad anatomy))), (((deformed))), (((disfigured))), watermark, multiple_views, mutation hands, mutation fingers, extra fingers, missing fingers, watermark, nude, nsfw
  • Sampling Method : DPM++ 2M Karras
  • Sampling Steps : 30
  • Width & Height : In our case this is an aspect ratio of 9:16
  • CFG Scale : 7

Hires Fix Settings

According to the details provided on the Civit.ai website in the ToonYou checkpoint section, the most favorable outcome is achieved by utilizing the "hires fix" option. The recommended settings are outlined below:

  • Upscaler : R-ESRGAN 4x+ Anime6B
  • Hires steps : 14
  • Denoising strength : 0.35
  • Upscale by : 1.5+

Once all the configurations are in order, simply click the "Generate" button, then relax and anticipate your GIF animation with the applied prompt travelling changes.

6. Example: AnimateDiff GIF Animation (Prompt Travelling)

After completing the rendering process, we've generated a GIF animation through prompt travel, in which the color of the dress changes every 2 seconds (16 frames). We hope you enjoy watching this GIF animation.

7. Conclusion

In conclusion, we've harnessed the power of Stable Diffusion, Prompt Travelling, and AnimateDiff to craft captivating GIF animations. By following the steps, we've embraced prompt adjustments to achieve precise control over our creations.

WATER INTAKE PROTECTION (WIP) SCREENS

Water intake systems using traditional travelling band screens are often faced with the problem of debris carry-over and marine life mortality as a result of fish impingement and entrainment on the screen.

They are not well suited for water-life recovery and return and often these screens can be difficult to retrofit with fish-saving technologies.

The BEAUDREY WIP screen (Water Intake Protection) has been developed to overcome these problems and can be considered an alternative technology to traditional travelling band screens; it can be retrofitted into existing thru-flow screen pits. Its design is a combination of the time-tested “Scoop-a-fishTM” system and the revolutionary BEAUDREY Debris Filter resulting in a unique, reliable and high-performing screen.

The WIP’s design allows for simple installation into existing thru-flowing travelling band screens guides. After an existing thru-flow screen is dismantled and removed from the pit, the modular WIP can be slid into the pit within a day. No modification of the concrete structure is required.

WIP screens can also be retrofitted in most existing screening plants with any other type of machines.

DESCRIPTION

As the water flows through the circular screening element, marine species are arrested by the fish-friendly NOCLING™ panel. Fish are then kept in deep compartments located on the upstream face of the NOCLING™ panel. Within one minute, they are removed by a fish-friendly scoop and pump into a returning flume. From here they are redirected by a pipeline around the water screen and into the outlet water. The fish are never exposed to the high or negative pressures and temperatures of the power plant, nor do they ever leave the water, so they are never exposed to air.

Reverse rotation prevents jamming by large debris.

APPLICATION

Fossil and nuclear power plants, chemical plants, desalination plants, manufacturing plants, refineries, irrigation.

Rated by EPRI as the best available fish and intake screen technology

Well suited for water life: a two-year, independent study confirmed that the WIP has no negative impact on marine life

Helps plants to achieve EPA 316(b) requirements

Proven lowest fish mortality rate of intake systems (EPRI)

Fully customizable

No debris carry-over

Resistant to high H2O pressure differentials

Design to retrofit existing travelling band screens as well as for new plants

Easy installation: no modification of concrete structures is required

Installed with NOCLING™ anti-fiber screening panels for water with high fibrous content (screening sieve available)

Easy to operate and maintain; all equipment can be lifted out of the water in three hours or less for inspection.

Fewer moving parts than a traditional travelling band screen allows for easier, less frequent and lower-cost maintenance

Based on the design principle of the BEAUDREY “W” filter, allowing for spare part interchangeability with the BEAUDREY Zero Ball Loss (ZBL™) condenser tube-cleaning system and the BEAUDREY debris filter

Slid into wall guides, it can easily be lifted out for maintenance without dewatering the pit.
