Looking For A Pen Similar To Lamy Safari

By rockerxs February 13, 2013 in Lamy

NOS (New Old Stock)

I am currently using a Lamy Safari.

The indentation in the grip that forces the user to hold the pen at a certain angle is quite annoying.

I was thinking if someone could suggest me some pen with a similar weight ratio with the cap posted. Also a smoother nib would be a good bonus.

I tried using the Pilot Metropolitan but that's too heavy for me at the back and the pen keeps getting lifted off the paper.

I prefer to use a Medium Nib.

Please suggest me some pens in a reasonable price range of lets say about $50.

:D

Hi, you may want to try a TWSBI 540 (or 580 if you can wait for a month or two). The cost would be around 55 USD.

Another choice would be a Wality 69L. It is a large indian piston filler. You can get it for 12 GBP here for example.

Size-wise, both pens are similar to Lamy Safari (perhaps slightly larger). I find both pens to be very comfortable.

Well worth their price!

Extremely Rare

The 540 doesn't post as you requested, but the mini does. The Nemosine SIngularity and Piot 78G are pretty similar in weight and both post well. If you're okay with older pens you can find a Super 21 for around your budget.

Pelikan Pelikano though you may hate the section indent as much as the Safari. Or how about the Lamy Logo--same Lamy quality but without the section indents.

The Ultimate Lamy Safari Vs Kaweco Sport Comparison!

As more and more people look to make the switch from a regular ballpoint or rollerball pen over to using a fountain pen, we see more and more people asking questions about the better entry-level fountain pens on the market trying to decide on the better model for their needs. Due to this, a number of people have been seeking a dedicated Lamy Safari vs Kaweco Sport comparison article due to both fountain pens being popular options in the entry-level price bracket.

Due to this, we have decided to publish this article going over the features and benefits of both pens to try and help any of our readers who are considering adding either option to their collection. As both pens come with a low price tag, they are both very popular amongst the community while also having excellent reputations with large users bases too. In our opinion though, the Lamy Safari is going to be the better option as the octagonal barrel of the Kaweco Sport can annoy some people.

We have our comparison table for the main features of both the Lamy Safari and the Kaweco Sport below as well as a short breakdown below it for any of our readers who don’t have much spare time to read the whole article right now. Below the comparison table, we have our full breakdown for both fountain pens that go into as much detail as possible for any of our readers who do have more time available though.

Lamy Safari Vs Kaweco Sport Head To Head

Lamy Safari Fountain Pen (17F) Umber + 5 Black Ink Cartridges (1203886)

As you can see from our comparison table above, we feel that the Lamy Safari with be the better option for the majority of our readers and due to its dominant position, huge user base, and excellent reputation amongst the community, it would seem that most people agree. In our opinion, the Lamy Safari does offer a better writing experience than the Kaweco Sport in general but the octagonal barrel design of the Kaweco Sport seems to push even more people over to the Lamy Safari too.

Lamy Safari Review

We will be kicking off our deep dive into the featured pens with the Lamy Safari as it is our recommended entry-level fountain pen of choice for our readers due to its low price tag, excellent performance, and having the best reputation going for fountain pens at its price range. Since its release onto the market, the Lamy Safari has continues to steadily grow its user base seeing solid growth in sales with each passing year as its reputation keeps getting better and better.

The Lamy Safari Nib

Due to its low price point in the market, the nib of the Lamy Safari is made from stainless steel rather than gold or a gold plated variant. That said though, relative to the competition in the entry-level price bracket for fountain pens, the Lamy Safari offers an excellent writing experience due to the design of the Lamy nibs ensuring that the nib will smoothly glide across your paper when writing.

The Safari comes with the four standard nib sizes covering the extra-fine, fine, medium, and broad spectrum that the vast majority of people will be using with their fountain pen. Although there is no double broad or oblique variants of the Lamy Safari nib, this is common at this price point in the market as both double broad nibs and oblique cuts have a much smaller market share so the majority of fountain pen brands do not offer them for their lower price point pens.

The Lamy range are made in Germany and conform to standard western nib sizing too so if you currently use another western pen brand such as Parker then you can usually stick to your current nib size if you want to keep the same font when writing. If you are used to using an Asian fountain pen brand such as Pilot then you may want to downsize your nib as Asian nib sizes tend to be a size smaller than their western counterparts. For example, if you currently use a medium nib Pilot pen then look to go with the fine nib size on your Lamy to keep the same font when writing.

Unlike the rest of the fountain pens in the Lamy range that tend to be wet writers, the Safari is a dry writer, at least at first when it is right out of the box. Although this should not matter if you are only looking for a fountain pen for general writing, if you are looking for something for shading in areas of a bullet journal or something like that, it may cause some minor issues.

For example, the extra-fine and fine nib sizes on the Lamy Safari can be a little scratchy when used for shading on low GSM paper due to the dry nature of the nib. You are able to opt to use a higher GSM paper to help prevent this or simply go with a medium or broad nib size for your fountain pen. At this price point in the market though, small levels of scratch when writing are common and upgrading to something like the Lamy 2000 to prevent this is a large hike in price.

Another issue that is common with the cheaper fountain pens on the market, especially when using them on low GSM paper is that they can feather, bleed, and ghost easily. Although the dry nature of the nib on the Safari does help to minimize this, it can still happen at times but in all fairness to Lamy, it does tend to be much less than the competing brands that offer wetter nibs on their entry-level fountain pens.

Although most people tend to neglect regular maintenance of their pens at this price point, cleaning your Safari with a cheap flush cleaning kit can work wonders at maintaining your writing experience with the pen after a few months use. If you are brand new to using a fountain pen then there is no need to worry as the Lamy range are particularly easy to clean to remove dried ink and gunk to keep it writing as smooth as possible.

The Barrel Of The Lamy Safari

Just like the majority of other fountain pens in the sub-fifty dollar price bracket, the Lamy Safari has a barrel made from plastic and although they have done their best to ensure that the plastic is as tough as possible, the pen will not sustain much damage when compared to the higher resin based pens. This is common though as the majority of people will simply replace their Safari if the barrel breaks due to its lower price tag.

The plastic that Lamy have used for the barrel of the Safari is light though helping to keep the weight down when writing to reduce the chances of fatigue setting in for any longer writing sessions. The finish on the plastic is also nice to touch and comfortable when gripped between your thumb and fingers helping it to score some points over some of the other pens on the market right now.

As you would expect from an entry-level fountain pen, the Lamy Safari uses a cartridge convertor system for its ink storage and delivery rather than a piston filler. This is totally normal at this price point in the market though but if you do want to use a fountain pen that comes with a piston filler system then the Lamy 2000 is one of the best options on the market but it is in the intermediate price bracket for fountain pens.

The Lamy T10 cartridges mounts seamlessly to the convertor system though and as they have been designed to work with each other, it is rare that you will have an issues with the cartridge leaking. That said though, there are a number of third-party cartridges on the market that can mount to your Lamy Safari but for the sake of a dollar or two, we would recommend that you just go with the official Lamy T10’s and not have issues with leaking or clogging.

Unlike most of the Lamy range, the Safari is available with its barrel and body in a number of different colors including the very popular matte black that has a unique look to it when compared to what the competition are offering. This wider range of color combinations for the pen allows you to pick something that you prefer the look of rather than being stuck with a standard black with a gold trim.

The Lamy Safari Cap

pens like lamy safari

The cap of the Lamy Safari is made from the same type of plastic as the barrel of the pen helping to keep it as light as possible to prevent any counter weight or back weight when writing with the pen while having the cap posted. Although this may sound basic, at this price point in the market, there are a large number of pens that can have issues with the weight of the pen knocking it off-balance when having the cap posted and detracting from your writing experience.

Although the cap is made from plastic, the clip is made from stainless steel and has a nice level of spring to it allowing you to quickly and easily clip the pen to your pockets or any papers that you may need to clip it to when not in use. So many fountain pens at this price point have a plastic clip that will often break and fall off shortly after getting the pen but it is nice to see Lamy take additional steps to prevent this from happening.

The Lamy Safari has a push to lock cap mechanism and our regular readers will be aware that we prefer the twist lock cap on the higher price point pens but due to the low price tag of the Safari we don’t feel that we can mark it down for this. The push to lock system Lamy has used works well anyway and we know that a large number of people actually prefer the regular push to lock system anyway.

The Ink Reservoir Of The Lamy Safari

With the Lamy Safari being based around a cartridge based system rather than a piston filler, the pen does not have a traditional ink reservoir that dictates the limitation of its ink capacity. The Lamy T10 cartridges that we recommend that you use with the pen have between a 0.7ml and 1ml maximum ink capacity depending on the size of the cartridge that you purchase but the 1ml cartridges are hard to source outside of Europe.

The ink view window for the Lamy Safari is decent in all fairness and better than we would expect for this price point in the market. Although it is far from perfect, it does let you check the current ink level of your ink cartridge at a glance and get an idea of how much ink you have left. Due to most people using the 0.7ml ink cartridge, it is definitely worth keeping and eye on your ink supply for your pen but due to the cartridges being so cheap you can easily replace them when needed.

Kaweco Sport Review

Moving on to our deep dive of the Kaweco Sport fountain pen and although it is not our primary recommendation when put up against the Lamy Safari, it is still a solid little fountain pen that offers great performance for its price tag. We just feel that the Lamy Safari is the better option and offers you much more for your money as well as a better writing experience.

The Kaweco Sport Nib

The nib of the Kaweco Sport is also made from stainless steel just like the other entry-level fountain pens on the market but it also comes with an iridium tip to try and improve the writing experience for the user. That said though, opinions do seem to be split on if the iridium tip actually does anything or if it is just a marketing ploy but due to the low price tag of the pen, it doesn’t really matter either way as it definitely does not detract from the writing experience.

The Kaweco Sport is available in the extra-fine, fine, medium, and broad nib sizes so should be able to meet the needs of the vast majority of people looking for an entry-level fountain pen. Additionally, we have seen some people report that they have upgraded the nib on their pen to the gold plated nib to improve the writing experience but in reality, this will not improve your writing experience with the pen much.

Gold plated nibs are more for their visual appeal rather than to improve the writing experience of the user. The actual design of the nib matters more than if it has gold plated and then the beneficial properties of the gold don’t come into play until you get a solid gold nib that is 14 carats or more. This is when the additional spring and flex comes into play and helps to improve your writing experience with the pen, not when it is just gold plated so try not to fall into that trap and potentially waste your money.

Kaweco are also a German fountain pen brand just like Lamy and although their nibs do tend to be closer to the western standard for nib sizes, they can be a little off when compared to other western brands but not by as much as most Asian brands. Due to this, you can probably stick with a medium nib from your current fountain pen and still have a similar font when writing with the medium Kaweco Sport although it will be ever so slightly different.

The Kaweco Sport is a wetter writer than the Lamy Safari that can offer you a slightly smoother writing experience if you are using one of the fine nib size options on lower quality paper. On the flip side of that though, this can result in more bleed, ghosting, and feathering due to the increased ink flow when compared to the Safari while also potentially smearing more if you are a left-handed writer.

Thankfully, both of these issues can easily be corrected by being sure to use some decent 120 GSM paper when writing and although 100 GSM will do, 120 GSM is usually better at preventing bleed. Although the higher GSM rating will not totally stop the risk of smearing if you are left handed, it can help but as the Kaweco Sport is a cartridge-based pen, switching over to a fast drying ink is not an option.

As we touched on above, the nibs on the Kaweco Sport are replaceable but in our opinion, unless you prefer the visual aspect of the gold plated nibs , there is no reason to upgrade. Many people new to using a fountain pen seem to think that gold plating helps with smoother writing but the nib has to be solid gold to offer its benefits.

The Barrel Of The Kaweco Sport

The barrel of the Kaweco Sport is also made from plastic helping to keep the pen as light as possible but just like the Lamy Safari, we doubt that it will be able to take much punishment from any accidental drops and may easily break. As we touched on earlier though, at this price point in the market, this really shouldn’t be a real issue anyway as it is easy enough to just replace your Kaweco Sport if it does break without breaking the bank. That said though, both Lamy and Kaweco ensure that their products are built to last prior to shipping them and we are confident that both models will be able to take their fair share of punishment during reasonable use.

The cartridge system on the Kaweco Sport is similar to the one on the Safari too with the cartridges mounting well and forming a tight seal so you should have minimal issues with leaks. Again though, just like with all popular fountain pen models, there are some third-party ink cartridges available for the Kaweco Sport and although they may be fine, they tend to only be a dollar or so cheaper but may have low quality ink that may clog the nib so we feel it is not worth the risk.

The barrel of the Kaweco Sport does have an octagonal design and although this should not cause issues with you writing experience with the pen due to the section being round, some people tend not to like it. On the flipside of this though, the octagonal design of the pen helps to prevent it from rolling off a table and potentially breaking so you have to measure up the benefits of functionality over visuals.

Another thing that goes against the Kaweco Sport for adults is that the barrel is only available in Red, White, Black, Blue, Green, and Brown and they all look like they have been designed for children. Although some of the market share for entry-level fountain pens is for children at school, the colors of the Lamy Safari barrel will probably push it ahead of the Kaweco Sport for any students in college or for anyone in the work force.

The Kaweco Sport Cap

One of the main drawbacks of the Kaweco Sport against the competing fountain pens on the market in its price bracket is that its cap does not come with a clip as standard. You actually have to buy the clip separately that usually ends up retailing at around $10 depending on the retailer. This definitely holds the pen back as the clip not only comes build in with the Lamy Safari but it also performs well and fits the overall look of the pen.

Due to the clips for the Kaweco Sport being different colors to the plastic used for its barrel and cap, it can look out of place and make the pen look a little strange even though you have to pay almost a third of the value of the pen just for the clip. We have seen a number of reports from people who use the Kaweco Sport as their fountain pen of choice saying that they wish it came with a clip that matches the color of the pen and we are actually su[prised that Kaweco have not released a new design with this included.

The cap of the Kaweco Sport is light enough to not cause any issues with back weighting the pen when posted but the larger cap can seem a little clunky when you have it posted when compared to the smaller caps of competing pens. The Kaweco Sport does use a screw lock system to mount the cap to the barrel of the pen that we do prefer but without a clip to actually clip the pen to things the benefits of the screw lock drop off and a simple push to lock system will offer similar functionality.

The Ink Reservoir Of The Kaweco Sport

Just like the Lamy Safari, the Kaweco Sport does not have a traditional ink reservoir and uses ink cartridges that have a maximum ink capacity of 1.2ml. This is almost double that of the Lamy Safari helping the Kaweco Sport score points but most people who will be using an entry-level fountain pen will probably be able to replace the ink cartridge when required without issue anyway.

Although the older build design of the Kaweco Sport did have an ink view window, the more recent and more common design does not. Although the cartridges on the pen do offer a larger maximum ink supply than average, we feel it should still have an ink view window to allow users to quickly and easily check how much ink they have left in their pens.

Kaweco Sport Writing Samples

That brings our ultimate Lamy Safari vs Kaweco Sport comparison article to a close and as we have mentioned all through the article, the Lamy Safari is the obvious option for most people and has to be our default recommendation to our readers. The Kaweco Sport is a solid pen with a large user base and decent reputation but it just has things missing that the Safari offers as standard while often being available for a lower price tag than the Kaweco Sport too.

Lamy Al-Star vs. Lamy Safari: Comprehensive Comparison [2024]

When someone is getting interested in fountain pens, there is one pen brand that is almost always suggested to them: Lamy. Founded in 1966, Lamy has been in the business of making high-quality writing instruments for quite a long time. Their Safari and AL-Star pens make excellent first pens, excellent gifts, and can become collectable as well as useful objects. They are affordable and durable pens that can last a lifetime when considering the lamy safari vs al star.

The Safari was originally envisioned as a school pen for users between 10 and 15 years old. Manufactured from sturdy plastics and fitted with easily swappable steel nibs, they can stand up to the needs of school-aged people as well as those of us who are well beyond that age.

In this piece, we’ll take a look at the Safari and the AL-Star versions of this pen as well as a couple of different versions of those pens in the Vista and LX.

pens like lamy safari

What the Safari and AL-Star Have In Common

On the grip section, you’ll notice two flat sides. Those flats are meant to help school-aged folk use a “tripod” grip, and they do give you a nice grip on the otherwise smooth section. This is great for those of us who have that traditional tripod grip, but it can be annoying to those who hold their pen in some other fashion. The flat sides won’t fit your non-traditional grip, and the edge of those triangles, while not sharp, could cause the pen to rotate out of position or feel uncomfortable.

The cap finial of the AL-Star and Safari fountain pens will also have an inset disk featuring an “X” shape. This helps differentiate between the fountain pens and the rollerball models which have a round disk with a hole in the center. There are some limited edition fountain pens that have the round disk, but not too many. This can help you to find the right pen if you’ve got them all in your pen cup together.

The Lamy Safari Fountain Pen

Features of the safari.

The Lamy Safari was introduced in 1980 to capture the market of 10-15 year olds. The resin barrel of the Safari is ergonomic and sturdy. It’s also very light, and it feels nimble in your hand. At a mere 7g uncapped, the Safari is a pen that you can use for really long writing sessions without any hand fatigue.

pens like lamy safari

Benefits of the Safari

There are a couple of benefits that the Safari has over the AL-Star. First, it’s a little bit lighter than the AL-Star. The plastic of the barrel and section are rigid and they don’t feel cheap, but they still weigh less and that could be important to you if you have any sort of hand-issues that could make heavier pens problematic or tiring for you to write with.

The second benefit is that the plastic barrel of the Safari will hold up better to rough use. I don’t recommend being rough with any fountain pens, but the Safari is absolutely a pen that you can keep in a pocket or a bookbag without a sleeve or any other protection. It won’t dent or scratch easily, and that is especially important since the pen was originally aimed at the 10-15 year old market. There’s no need to baby this pen. That’s especially true of the models with a matte finish instead of the smooth finish.

There is also a variant of the Safari called the Vista. The Vista is a full demonstrator pen in transparent plastic. It has a bit more metal in the cap than the regular Safari, and so the cap is a little heavier, but it is otherwise identical.

One final benefit is that you can change the clips, finials, and trim rings on the Safari, but that isn’t possible with the AL-Star. Due to the way that the clip and the trim ring are attached to the Safari, you can swap these parts between different Safari models to make a custom color combination with the different painted clips and such. I’ve swapped the parts from the Mango and the Savannah Safari models to give an extra pop of contrasting color. Fun!

Drawbacks to the Safari

I think the main drawbacks of the Safari are related to the benefits. The light weight can cause some people to feel less sure about their grip on the pen, and that will make them grip it tightly so that it doesn’t get away from them. I’ve also noticed that a lightweight pen like this can affect my handwriting a bit. Some users will also equate the light-weight with low quality. These pens aren’t low quality at all, but that perception is out there and especially among new fountain pen users.

The materials of the pen can also look a bit “cheap” to some folks. The plastic finish will not appeal to folks who want the shine of a metal barrel. It can look like a “kid’s pen” to some, and that impression isn’t false. It was introduced to appeal to younger people. It just also happens to appeal to a wider range of people, too.

pens like lamy safari

The Lamy AL-Star Fountain Pen

The AL-Star pen was developed after the Safari took off, and there are a couple of small design tweaks that you’ll see if you look closely. The barrel and cap are a slightly larger diameter than the Safari, but it’s only 1mm and not an obvious difference. This is due to there being a plastic barrel underneath the aluminum sheath.

The AL-Star and Safari are also different in length by about 1 mm. Some of this is due to the cap configuration, making the Safari’s cap just a bit longer. When they’re uncapped, though, the AL-Star is just a hair longer. These differences in girth and length are minor, and probably not something you’ll notice in your hand.

The sections of the two pens share the same dimensions, but they can’t be interchanged. If you compare them side-by-side, you’ll see that the trim ring of the Safari is part of the grip section, but the trim ring of the AL-Star is actually a part of the inner plastic barrel. Another subtle difference, but certainly worth noting for those who might want to swap the translucent AL-Star section onto their Safari or give their AL-Star the solid color plastic section of their Safari. That’s a no-go.

The AL-Star is also marginally heavier than the Safari. Comparing the AL-Star’s 10 grams (uncapped) to the Safari’s 7 grams (uncapped) you might feel the difference. It is a minor one, but some particularly perceptive folks may notice.

Some consumers will certainly prefer the sleek look of the AL-Star or the very slight weight increase that the aluminum sheath gives the pen. The 3 grams of extra weight is not particularly noticeable to me, but some will note it for sure.

That same sleek look is also the drawback to the AL-Star. You’ll need to take better care of the shiny aluminum barrel than you would the more rugged plastic of the Safari. It is prone to picking up scratches, scuffs, and dings that the Safari would shrug off. On the other hand, perhaps you enjoy the marks that your use will add to the AL-Star over time. With a little care and a pen sleeve, though, your AL-Star will continue to look sleek and modern.

Some Final Details

Writing experience.

Whether you choose the Safari, Vista, or the AL-Star, you will get the same nib on the pens. Most of Lamy’s pens share the same stainless steel nib design, and this means that there are many different nibs that you can easily swap onto your pen. With point sizes ranging from EF to 1.9 mm as well as oblique styles and a left-handed nib, you can make the pen your own. Some styles also come with a black nib instead of the usual polished stainless steel. The Lamy LX series of the AL-Star model feature a black PVD coated nib that is particularly good looking, and the Aion and Ideos share a curvy version of the standard steel nib. The writing experience will be the same across these models.

The writing experience from these nibs is generally very good. The extra fine nibs are a little on the scratchy side, but that is typical of extra fine nibs, and nothing to be concerned about. The middle sizes of fine, medium, and broad, are all about what you would expect from a European nib of that size. Average and very controlled ink flow is typical, and they might feel a little too dry for some of the drier inks out there, but these pens are workhorses that will handle all sorts of papers and inks without issue.

The one thing I would advise is to skip shimmer inks with these Lamy models. The feed is really difficult to remove from the section, and I don’t advise it. That means it is difficult to give your pen a deep-clean to remove all of the shimmer particles, and that will annoy some users.

Feel in the Hand

Honestly, between the Safari and AL-Star, I don’t find the hand-feel to be very different at all. The very slight differences in weight, length, and girth aren’t very noticeable unless you’re comparing them directly and you’re really looking for the differences. Both are agile, light, and comfortable as long as you’re okay with the tripod grip that they demand.

Your big choice here is between metal finishes and plastic ones. I have never really picked a side in the Safari vs. AL-Star question because the look of the individual model is what will do it for me or not. One thing to definitely check out is the matte vs shiny plastic sections, though. Some of the Safari models will come in a matte finish, and I find that this gives a really good tactile feel to the section that the smooth plastic sections are missing. None of them are slippery in the hand (thanks to the triangular grip) but the matte finish does give some extra purchase that I appreciate.

Special Editions

Last but not least, there are SO MANY special editions of these pens. Each year will bring at least one special edition color of the Safari and the AL-Star. Sometimes there will be more than one of each. Whether this is a positive or negative for you will depend on how you feel about collecting. I love that there are so many different options for these pens when discussing the lamy safari vs al star. Each looks different from the next and I can fit the color to my ink, outfit, or mood as I like. If I were a collector of the gotta-catch-them-all variety, I would find it daunting. There are decades of special pens out there to hunt down, and some of them cost a pretty penny on the secondary market.

FAQ: Answering your questions

How do you say “al-star”.

This is contentious! Some folks (Like my friend the Penaddict) spell it out. “A-EL Star.” I go with saying it as one would normally say “All Star.” It’s fun to pick sides, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter. As long as you call it the All Star, that is. (wink)

“Why is there blue ink in my new pen!?”

Does the lamy safari / al-star fountain pen come with a converter, will the lamy lz26/lz27 converter fit the safari / al-star fountain pen, how do the lamy safari nib sizes compare against other european and japanese nib styles, how do you replace the nib on the lamy safari / al-star.

How do the various nib sizes of the Lamy Safari / AL-Star compare?

Lamy Safari Fountain Pen Review: All-Around Favorite for Any Writer

If you’re a budding pen enthusiast, you’ve probably heard of the Lamy Safari fountain pen. It was one of the first fountain pens I ever bought — and helped grow my love of pens.

This iconic writing instrument has been a popular choice for both beginners and seasoned pen lovers for decades, known for its sleek design with cool color options and high-quality nibs.

In this review, I’ll delve into the history of the Lamy Safari , its design and aesthetics, nib options and writing experience, as well as its filling mechanisms and ink capacity, and share some of my thoughts as to why it’s such a great pen.

History of the Lamy Safari Fountain Pen

The Lamy Safari has been available since the early 1980s when it was first introduced in Germany. It was designed by Wolfgang Fabian, with a focus on creating an affordable and reliable pen that was suitable for use by both children and adults.

Origins and Design Philosophy

Fabian’s design philosophy is reflected in the pen’s name, Safari, which suggests durability and reliability in harsh environments. The pen’s aesthetic is also inspired by Fabian’s desire to create a writing instrument that was simple, practical, and modern, with a focus on functionality over style.

The Safari fountain pen was designed to be a workhorse pen that could be used in a variety of settings, from the classroom to the boardroom. Its lightweight design and comfortable grip make it easy to use for extended periods of time, while its sturdy construction ensures that it can withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. If you’re looking for a daily writer, this is a great option.

One of the key features of the Lamy Safari fountain pen is its interchangeable nibs. The pen comes with a steel nib as standard, but users can easily swap it out for a different size or material depending on their writing needs — even offering left-handed nibs for writers . This versatility has made the Lamy Safari a favorite, who appreciate the ability to customize their writing experience without having to buy a new pen every time.

I recently ordered a new set of nibs for my Safari. I had a medium and wanted to try a fine, so as much as I’d love a collection of Safari’s, it was a lot cheaper to get a new nib.

Evolution of the Lamy Safari Series

Over the years, the Lamy Safari fountain pen has evolved in various ways. New materials and color options have been introduced, as well as different nib sizes and types . Today, the Lamy Safari is still going strong, with a loyal fan base that appreciates its quality and affordability.

In recent years, Lamy has expanded the Safari series to include other types of pens, such as rollerballs and ballpoints. These pens retain the same design aesthetic and functional features as the fountain pen, making them a popular choice for those who prefer a different writing style.

The Safari is one of the best beginner fountain pens for those who are just starting out with fountain pens or who want a reliable workhorse pen for everyday use. Its combination of quality, versatility, and affordability has made it a classic in the world of fountain pens.

Here is a comparison of the Safari and some of its most popular competitors:

Please note that prices may vary based on the retailer and location. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it’s best to check with specific retailers or manufacturers.

Design and Aesthetics

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is unmistakable in its design, with its sleek lines. It is available in a variety of materials and colors, ranging from bright and bold to more subdued shades.

But the Lamy Safari is not just a pretty pen. It is also designed for functionality and ease of use. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or a beginner, this pen is a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable writing tool.

Material and Color Options

The pen’s body is typically made of lightweight, durable resin, but there are also models available in aluminum and stainless steel. The resin models are particularly popular due to their affordability and wide range of color options. From classic blacks and whites to vibrant purples and blues, there is a color for every taste.

I love the bright yellow, so when I saw it, I had to grab it.

pens like lamy safari

The aluminum and stainless steel models, on the other hand, offer a more premium feel and are perfect for those who want a pen that feels substantial in their hand.

Clip and Cap Design

The pen’s clip and cap are also notable design features. The clip is not just for show — it is sturdy and reliable, allowing you to easily clip the pen to your pocket or notebook without fear of it falling off. The cap is designed to prevent ink from drying out and allows for easy opening and closing, so you can quickly jot down your thoughts without any fuss.

But the cap also serves another purpose. It is designed to be posted on the back of the pen while you write, giving the pen a longer and more balanced feel in your hand. This is particularly useful for those who prefer a heavier pen or like to write for extended periods of time.

Ergonomics and Grip

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is designed with ergonomics in mind, providing a comfortable grip for extended writing sessions. The triangular grip ensures that your fingers are properly spaced and allows for a more natural and relaxed grip. This is especially important for those who suffer from hand fatigue or cramping when writing for long periods of time.

I’ve spent a lot of time journaling with my Lamy Safari and haven’t gotten some of the hand cramps I have with other pens.

The grip is also made of a non-slip material, which ensures that the pen won’t slip out of your hand, even if your palms get sweaty. This feature is particularly useful for those who live in hot or humid climates or for those who tend to get nervous when writing in important situations.

Overall, the Lamy Safari fountain pen is a great choice for anyone who values both form and function. Its sleek design, range of colors and materials, and comfortable grip make it a joy to use, whether you’re writing a novel or just jotting down a quick note.

Nib Options and Writing Experience

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is a popular choice among fountain pen enthusiasts for its variety of nib options and smooth writing experience. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting out, the Lamy Safari has a nib option that will suit your needs.

lamy safari nib extra fine close up

One of the standout features of the Lamy Safari fountain pen is its variety of nib options. There are several different sizes and types of nibs available, ranging from fine to broad and even flexible. The nibs are made of high-quality stainless steel and are available in a range of sizes. Whether you need a fine nib for detailed work or a broad nib for bolder strokes, there is a nib option for you.

Nib Materials and Sizes

The Lamy Safari fountain pen’s nibs are made of high-quality stainless steel, which ensures durability and longevity. The nibs are available in a range of sizes, from extra fine to broad, allowing you to choose the perfect size for your writing needs. The nibs are also designed to be easily replaceable, so you can switch them out if you prefer a different size or type.

If you’re a leftie, you’re in luck. Lamy offers a left-handed Safari nib model, so you can enjoy writing too.

Lamy Safari Left-Hander Nib - Black

Lamy sells Safari pens that come with the leftie nib. So right out of the box, you're good to go.

Ink Flow and Smoothness

The Safari is known for its smooth writing experience, with consistent ink flow and minimal skipping. It’s also compatible with a variety of popular ink brands . The pen’s nibs are designed to provide a consistent flow of ink , ensuring that your writing is always smooth and effortless. The ink flow is also adjustable, so you can customize it to your liking. The pen’s ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip, even during long writing sessions.

Writing Samples and Comparisons

If you’re considering purchasing a Lamy Safari, it’s important to try it out for yourself. However, there are numerous online reviews and writing samples available, allowing you to get a sense of its capabilities before making a purchase. You can compare the Safari to other fountain pens in its price range to see how it stacks up in terms of writing experience, design, and value.

Here are a few tests from some of the notebooks I own with varying paper weights . If you want to see the best notebooks for fountain pens, check out this post .

With these, there is some ghosting and a touch of bleedthrough, depending on the paper. I’m also using a dark blue ink which is big heavier.

Ghosting doesn’t bother me. But if it’s something that annoys you, then you may want to go for a notebook with a heavier GSM.

This doesn’t work well on standard paper like Field Notes.

pens like lamy safari

There’s a lot of feathering and heavy ghosting on the other side.

Filling Mechanisms and Ink Capacity

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is a versatile writing instrument that offers a range of filling mechanisms to suit your needs. Whether you prefer the convenience of disposable ink cartridges or the elegance of a traditional piston filler, the Lamy Safari has got you covered.

pens like lamy safari

I’ve used both converters and cartridges for my Lamy pens.

Cartridge/Converter System

The standard filling system for the Lamy Safari fountain pen is the cartridge/converter system. This is a popular option among fountain pen enthusiasts. It’s easy to clean and refill your pen with ink. With this system, you can choose between using disposable ink cartridges or using a converter to fill the pen from a bottle of ink.

One of the advantages of the cartridge/converter system is that it is very easy to use. Insert a new ink cartridge into the pen or attach the converter and dip the nib into a bottle of ink. It’s a great option for if you’re new to fountain pens or prefer a low-maintenance writing experience.

Lamy T10 Assorted Colour Pack Fountain Pen Ink Cartridges

Piston Filler Option

For those who prefer a more traditional filling mechanism, the Lamy Safari fountain pen has a piston filler option. It allows you to fill your pen directly from an ink bottle. That lets you write a lot longer longer before needing to refill.

The piston filler system is a classic filling mechanism that has been used in fountain pens for decades. It works by using a piston to draw ink up from a bottle and into the pen’s reservoir. This provides a high ink capacity, which is ideal for those who write frequently or for long periods of time.

Ink Capacity Comparison

Depending on the filling mechanism you choose, the ink capacity of the Lamy Safari fountain pen will vary. The cartridge/converter system provides a moderate amount of ink. Each cartridge or converter fills the pen with about 1.5 to 2 milliliters of ink.

On the other hand, the piston filler option allows for a much greater capacity. With this system, you can fill the pen with up to 1.35 milliliters of ink. That’s more than double the amount provided by a single cartridge or converter.

Ultimately, the choice between the cartridge/converter system and the piston filler option comes down to personal preference. If you prefer a low-maintenance writing experience and don’t mind refilling your pen more frequently, the cartridge/converter system may be the best option for you. However, if you value a high ink capacity and enjoy the traditional elegance of a piston filler, the Lamy Safari fountain pen with a piston filler option may be the perfect choice.

Lamy Safari Fountain Pen Review

I am a die-hard gel pen lover. I won’t deny that. But I also have a thing for fountain pens. Most fountain pens cost far more than I’m willing to pay for a pen. But there is one fountain pen I’ve been using for a long while now and really like. That being the Lamy Safari.

You might be surprised to learn this but I’m not particularly fussed when it comes to pens. Yes, I like a nice pen just as much as everyone else. But to me, a pen is just a tool. I’m not massively into journaling. I write because I have to, not because I want to.

pens like lamy safari

But I still love the Lamy Safari fountain pen. One of the reasons I love it is because it has been a great place for me to start with fountain pens. It’s also very affordable considering how much you could pay for a fountain pen.

But the reason I initially bought a Lamy Safari is that out of all the fountain pens you could buy, this is a particularly good one. Both for beginners and fountain pen enthusiasts.

Its been so long since I bought my first Lamy Safari pen that I honestly can’t remember how I first came across it. At some point, I read a blog post which mentioned the pen as being good for beginners.

For a long time I never really understood why fountain pens can be tricky to use compared to gel or ballpoint pens. Learning calligraphy has helped me with that to some extent. The nib of a fountain pen is much more flexible compared to a ballpoint tip which doesn’t move.

Suffice to say, everything I read pointed towards the Lamy Safari as being a good place to start with fountain pens. So I decided to buy one to find out more. I can tell you now that I love my Lamy Safari. It is a very comfortable pen to hold and write with. Though I do have some slight annoyances with it as well.

The design of the Lamy Safari fountain pen makes it instantly recognisable. I’ve always thought of fountain pens as looking old-fashioned. Not so with the Lamy Safari.

This pen is moulded entirely out of plastic. The body of the pen is not perfectly round. Two sides have the curves flattened. This stops the pen from rolling about on your desk.

pens like lamy safari

The handgrip of the Lamy Safari is flattened out. Creating a more triangular section. I think this handgrip is either a love it or hate it situation. I like the grip on the Lamy Safari. The barrel of the pen is much thicker compared to the Muji Gel Pens. This makes it a more comfortable pen to hold for long periods.

I’ve mentioned in the past I’ve had problems with my hands cramping up while using pens. I’ve found the Lamy Safari to be a very comfortable pen to use. Even though the handgrip is made of plastic. This means I’m able to use it for a long time before taking a break.

The Lamy Safari fountain pens come in several different colours. Including black, blue, red, yellow and white. These colours can be found in either shiny or matte versions. Lamy also makes limited edition colours which change every year.

The pen has a window in the barrel of the pen. This allows you to see the ink cartridge. This adds an interesting design detail to the pen but it also allows you to see how much ink is left.

For the most part, the Lamy Safari writes well. I’ve never had any problems while writing with this pen. I did have some trouble initially with getting the ink to flow. But nothing since then. Saying that one of the things I have a slight problem with is how the Lamy Safari writes in sketchbooks.

I love writing with my Lamy pen in my MD Paper notebook. But that paper is very smooth and has been designed in a way that it is a nice experience to write. Sketchbook paper is much rougher and it means it’s not as nice to write on. This probably won’t be a problem to most. But as the one thing I use pens for is writing in sketchbooks it is an issue to me.

One of my tiny niggling problems with the Lamy Safari is the nibs. The Lamy pens come with interchangeable nibs. When you buy a Lamy pen it comes with a medium-size nib, you can also buy a fine and extra fine size. These nibs will fit on any of the Lamy Pens.

The Lamy Safari comes with steel nibs, though Lamy makes gold nibs for the Studio fountain pens and you could use this instead if you prefer. Though the steel nibs work perfectly fine.

pens like lamy safari

MORE LIKE THIS: A Review Of The Tombow Dual Brush Markers

What I don’t like about the Lamy nibs is the thicknesses they come in. The medium-sized nib is around 1mm. I found this was too thick and bought an extra-fine nib. This is still what I would consider being quite thick. Especially compared to the 0.38mm nib on the Muji pens. It is something to consider if you prefer a pen with a very fine nib.

Flexible Nib

One of the defining characteristics of a fountain pen is the flexible nib. This nib is made up of two tines. Above that is a small reservoir which holds a bead of ink. The ink moves down the tines and onto the paper.

The flexibility of the tines will vary depending on the nib. When you press down onto the paper the tines move apart, creating a thicker line. This is what creates that classic calligraphy look. It can be very tricky getting used to this. I should know, I’ve been learning dip pen calligraphy for over three years now.

MORE LIKE THIS: A Guide To Bullet Journal Supplies For Beginners

The nibs on the Lamy Safari pens are slightly different in that they aren’t flexible. This means the line thickness will stay the same no matter how much pressure you put on the pen. So writing with the Lamy Safari will feel the same as writing with a gel or rollerball pen.

This is something to consider depending on your preferences. If you’re looking for that classic calligraphy look you might want to buy a different pen . But if you’re just getting started with calligraphy the Lamy Safari can be a good pen to start practising with.

Fountain pens give you much more flexibility when it comes to ink. Of course, you have the option of buying standard fountain pen ink cartridges. Lamy makes their version of these in several different colours. Though you should note the pen comes with a blue ink cartridge as standard. You will have to buy black ink if you prefer this.

These ink cartridges can be refilled using a dropper. Which means you can buy other types of fountain pen ink. There are probably other blogs out there which are much better at reviewing fountain pen inks compared to me.

pens like lamy safari

MORE LIKE THIS: Are Zebra Mildliner’s The Best Highlighter?

I’ve used several different calligraphy inks. The Higgins branded inks are one of my personal favourites for calligraphy. Most of the other inks I’ve used would be too thick for use in a fountain pen. Honestly, when it comes to pens I just need it to work. I don’t get into the little details of what ink is best.

But it is possible to buy different inks for your fountain pen. These can be bought from places like Amazon or Jet Pens. If you live in the UK the Journal Shop seems to be a good place to go if you’re looking for ink.

Piston Converter

Instead of using ink cartridges the other option you have with fountain pens is something called a piston converter. This is probably the more sustainable option out of the two.

The piston converter allows you to dip the nib of the pen in ink. By twisting the body of the pen this creates a vacuum within the converter which pulls ink into the pen.

Lamy sells its brand of ink in jars as well as cartridges. So you can choose which method you would rather use. As well as buying ink from other shops. Like I said before. This isn’t something I’ve gotten into with fountain pens. But it is a possibility.

What I do like about the Lamy pens is that you don’t have to immediately dive into all the complicated converter business. You can start out buying a pack of regular ink cartridges before trying other colours and brands of ink to find something you like.

Cleaning Your Fountain Pen

One of the things I have learned with fountain pens is that they have to be cleaned occasionally. The ink within the pen can gunk up causing blockages in the pen. If your fountain pen stops working properly it can be a good idea to clean old ink out of it.

Fortunately cleaning out the Lamy Safari is a very easy process. You take the pen apart then place the lower, nib part of the pen in a glass of water. You will see the ink start to seep out of the pen. Replace the water occasionally, once the water stays clear your fountain pen should be clean.

I like to do this after going through a few ink cartridges. It can also be a good thing to do if you’re changing the colour of ink that you use. This process only takes a few hours and it a really good thing to try if your pen isn’t writing properly.

Where To Buy The Lamy Safari

The Lamy Safari can be found online in shops such as Amazon and Jet Pens. The Lamy Safari usually retails at around £20. This is expensive compared to gel pens but it quite cheap compared to most fountain pens.

You can also buy the Lamy Safari in-store at places like Cass Art and Paperchase. Both of these shops usually have a small display for Lamy products. You should be able to find ink cartridge refills as well as Lamy pens.

Some of the larger Paperchase stores have a boutique pen department where they have a much wider selection of pens to choose from. But the basic range of pens Paperchase have in stock will just depend on which store you visit.

MORE LIKE THIS: A Back-To-School Muji Haul

It’s also important to note that Lamy makes a rollerball version of the Safari. If you’re wanting to buy a fountain pen just be careful you get the right thing. I nearly bought myself a rollerball pen because I wasn’t paying enough attention to the packaging.

Shops like Paperchase and Cass Art won’t sell replacement nibs. This is something you will have to order online. They can be found on Amazon or the Lamy website. These nibs are usually quite cheap, retailing around £8.

Another place to look is The Journal Shop . This is a UK based online store which specialises in writing utensils . As well as stocking Lamy products you will be able to find fountain pen inks if you want to experiment with ink.

That was my review of the Lamy Safari fountain pen. Honestly, I love this fountain pen. It’s reasonably priced and is comfortable to hold which is more than I can say for the Muji pens.

Okay, I do have a few slight niggles with it. I don’t like the thickness of the nibs, I prefer a pen with a very fine line. I also don’t like how it writes on rougher paper, which is a problem because I do a lot of writing in sketchbooks. But for the cost its a very good pen to buy if you’re just getting started with fountain pens.

Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever tried fountain pens before. Do you have any favourite inks? I would love to try some new inks in my Lamy pen.

I have several more expensive fountain pens, up to the $500 range. The Lamy Safari holds its own against all of them. Writes like a dream, never dries up and takes all kinds of ink. For the price you can’t beat the Safari. I think it also has some reverse snob appeal. You don’t need a $500 pen to have a great fountain pen.

The LAMY  safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. The triangular grip makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do i fill a fountain pen with ink 8eda1617-f73a-4daf-8245-6d2bf4abeb7b.

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here .
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here .

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog .

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

  • How to Clean a Cartridge/Converter Pen
  • How to Clean an Eyedropper Pen
  • How to Clean a Piston Pen

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush , or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

You can submit a return request within 30 days of your order date. You can read all our Return Policies here .

To initiate a return, please submit a request at the Return Portal . Our Customer Care team might reach out to you for more information.

Please note we are unable to accept a return of any Namiki or Sailor Bespoke fountain pen for any reason once it has been used with ink. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.

  1. Looking for a new pen similar to LAMY Safari : r/fountainpens

If you are ok with the equivalent of a Lamy F, try the Pilot Metropolitan, it should be a bit cheaper, but it is highly recommended as an alternative to the Safari. The only con is that it is only available as a Japanese M nib. If you want the equivalent of a Lamy EF, pick up a Pilot 78g fine and swap the nip with the Metropolitan! 8. ebarbaric.

  2. Looking For A Pen Similar To Lamy Safari

It is made out of ABS plastic with a metal nib that allows the ink to run as smooth as silk on paper or on canvas.

  6. The Ultimate Lamy Safari Vs Kaweco Sport Comparison!

As you would expect from an entry-level fountain pen, the Lamy Safari uses a cartridge convertor system for its ink storage and delivery rather than a piston filler. ...
