pga tour 2024 signature events

The PGA Tour will introduce ‘Signature Events’ in 2024, featuring eight tournaments with smaller fields, increased prize purses, and more FedEx Cup points, with the top-50 members of the reshuffled FedEx Cup standings from the 2022-23 season automatically qualifying for all Signature Events.

The PGA Tour’s ‘Signature Events’ are set to hit the calendar in 2024. This follows a year of ‘Designated Events’ in 2022-23.

The eight tournaments, which exclude the Majors, playoff events, and Players Championship, promise smaller fields. But, they’ll offer increased prize purses and more FedEx Cup points. The winner of each will receive a whopping 700 points.

Three of these events will be hosted by legends of the game. They’ll feature a 36-hole cut and a generous 20% of the total prize purse awarded to the winner. The remaining tournaments will be no-cut competitions. The usual 18% prize will be handed to the champion.

The top-50 members of the reshuffled FedEx Cup standings from the 2022-23 season will automatically qualify for all Signature Events. ‘The Next 10’ will also get a chance to start. This group includes the top-10 players on the 2024 FedExCup point list, not otherwise exempt via a higher priority category.

For the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational, the Next 10 will refer to those players who finished between 51-60 on the final 2022-23 FedExCup Fall points list. To ensure every PGA Tour member has a shot at making it, there’s another exemption category called the ‘Swing 5.’

Those who secure the most FedEx Cup points in between Signature Events will book a tee time at the upcoming tournament. The winner of any PGA Tour event is also eligible for the remaining ‘Signature’ tournaments in 2024. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the eight Signature Events on the PGA Tour calendar in 2024.

Introducing the #AonNext10 and #AonSwing5. These are new eligibility paths into the Signature Events. They’re designed to deliver higher stakes and more drama to the PGA TOUR season.

The Sentry (January 4-7) kicks off the 2024 PGA Tour season at the Kapalua Plantation Course in Hawaii. Being the first tournament of the campaign, The Sentry is the only Signature Event which will not include either qualifiers from The Next 10 or The Swing 5.

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (February 1-4) is the biggest Pro-Am golf tournament in the world. It takes place at two iconic courses – Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

The Genesis Invitational (February 15-18) is hosted by Tiger Woods at Riviera Country Club. Each player will be hoping to fall in love with the trophy at the end of the week.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (March 7-10) saw Kurt Kitayama tasting success at Bay Hill in 2023. The event in Florida sees the winner receive a red cardigan sweater, in memory of Arnold Palmer.

The RBC Heritage (April 18-21) takes place days after The Masters finishes in mid-April. The Wells Fargo Championship (May 9-12) will mark its final year in 2024.

The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (June 6-9) is the ideal warm-up to the U.S Open. The Travelers Championship (July 20-23) is the final Signature Event of the season. It’s due to take place one week after the U.S Open at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.

PGA TOUR unveils 2024 FedExCup Season, including eight Signature Events

For release: August 7, 2023 Contact: Joel Schuchmann, [email protected]

Calendar-year schedule, interconnected events heighten drama and consequence for players and fans

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida – The PGA TOUR today released its 2024 FedExCup Regular Season and FedExCup Playoffs schedule, with events interconnected like never before to deliver maximum drama and consequence, as the TOUR returns to a calendar-year schedule for the first time since 2012. The FedExCup Fall portion of the 2024 FedExCup Season, which will finalize the top 125 for the 2025 season, will be announced at a later date.

The 2024 FedExCup Regular Season, consisting of 36 events, begins in January with the “Opening Drive” at The Sentry and Sony Open in Hawaii – where all players start with zero FedExCup points and look to get off to a strong start in the race for the FedExCup. The Wyndham Championship once again serves as the culmination of the Regular Season, with only 70 players advancing to the FedExCup Playoffs. The Regular Season schedule includes the 50th playing of THE PLAYERS Championship and the four Major Championships, eight Signature Events (referred to as “Designated events” in 2023), 18 Full-Field Events and five Additional Events.

“We are excited about the roll-out of the PGA TOUR’s reimagined schedule and what the season will offer to our fans: a January start with stars competing head-to-head more often, alongside the weekly drama of life-altering moments and the emergence of new stars,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “While winning on the PGA TOUR continues to be the ultimate – and most difficult – challenge, we have further connected every tournament, with more at stake each week. From The Sentry through the FedExCup Playoffs and into the soon-to-be-announced FedExCup Fall, this new, cadence will create consistent excitement for our fans and reward players like never before. We are grateful to the membership – especially the Player Directors and Player Advisory Council – as well as our tournaments and partners for the collaboration that has set us up for an exciting 2024.”

New to the list of Signature Events in 2024 is the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, to be played at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. The reimagined event will see a significant adjustment to its traditional Pro-Am format. Amateurs will now compete alongside professionals (80 players) over the first two rounds, with the competition limited to professionals only for the final two rounds at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The eight Signature Events, which are limited-field tournaments with increased prize money and FedExCup points (700 points to the winner), are as follows:

  • The Sentry (January 1-7)
  • AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (January 29-February 4)
  • The Genesis Invitational (February 12-18)
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (March 4-10)
  • RBC Heritage (April 15-21)
  • Wells Fargo Championship (May 6-12)
  • the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday (June 3-9)
  • Travelers Championship (June 17-23)

The three player-hosted invitationals (The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday) will feature a 36-hole cut to the top 50 and ties and any player within 10 shots of the lead, and a redistribution of prize money that allocates 20 percent to the winner ($4 million), up from 18 percent. The remaining five Signature Events will not have a cut and will continue to allocate 18 percent to the winner.

The 2024 schedule cadence connects events through several new eligibility paths, allowing trending players to earn Signature Event starts and ensuring every member the opportunity to compete alongside the game’s best.

The Sentry is the season’s first Signature Event and includes PGA TOUR winners from the previous calendar year as well as the top 50 members from the 2022-23 FedExCup standings (i.e., those who qualify for the BMW Championship, the second FedExCup Playoffs event).

Eligibility for the remaining seven Signature Events (field sizes anticipated to be between 70-80 players) includes the top 50 members from the 2022-23 FedExCup standings and 15 members who can play their way in through The Next 10 and The Swing 5.

The Next 10 represents the top 10 members, not otherwise exempt, from the FedExCup standings. The Swing 5 includes the top five FedExCup points earners, not otherwise exempt, from the swing of Full-Field and Additional events preceding each Signature Event.

Below is an overview of timing for The Next 10 and The Swing 5 for the seven Signature Events, outside The Sentry.

  • The Next 10 – from the final FedExCup Fall standings
  • The Swing 5 – top FedExCup points earners from Sony Open in Hawaii, The American Express and Farmers Insurance Open
  • The Swing 5 – top FedExCup points earners from Sony Open in Hawaii, The American Express, Farmers Insurance Open and WM Phoenix Open
  • The Next 10 – from the current FedExCup standings through The Classic in The Palm Beaches
  • The Swing 5 – top FedExCup points earners from Mexico Open at Vidanta and The Classic in The Palm Beaches
  • The Next 10 – from the current FedExCup standings through the Masters Tournament
  • The Swing 5 – top FedExCup points earners from Puerto Rico Open, Valspar Championship, Texas Children’s Houston Open and Valero Texas Open
  • The Next 10 – from the current FedExCup standings through AT&T Byron Nelson
  • The Swing 5 – top FedExCup points earners from Corales Puntacana Championship, Zurich Classic of New Orleans and AT&T Byron Nelson
  • The Next 10 – from the current FedExCup standings through RBC Canadian Open
  • The Swing 5 – top FedExCup points earners from Myrtle Beach Classic, Charles Schwab Challenge and RBC Canadian Open
  • The Next 10 – from the current FedExCup standings through U.S. Open

Signature Event eligibility will also include current season tournament winners (excluding Additional Events), PGA TOUR members inside the top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking (through the preceding week) and four sponsor exemptions earmarked for PGA TOUR members. The three player-hosted invitationals will also have one tournament host exemption, which is not restricted to PGA TOUR members: the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption (The Genesis Invitational), the Arnold Palmer Cup Exemption (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard) and the Jack Nicklaus Award for NCAA Division I National Player of the Year (the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday).

The Wyndham Championship (August 5-11) concludes the FedExCup Regular Season and finalizes the Comcast Business TOUR TOP 10, which will award a doubled prize pool of $40 million, with $8 million going to the winner. Following the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship is the 18th edition of the FedExCup Playoffs.

  • The top 70 players in the FedExCup standings qualify for the first FedExCup Playoffs event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship (August 12-18) at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, and are exempt for Full-Field Events and THE PLAYERS in 2025.
  • From there, the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings advance to the BMW Championship (August 19-25), contested for the first time at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado. Castle Pines Golf Club hosted a TOUR event, The International, from 1986-2006. Those 50 players are fully exempt for the following season and earn the additional distinction of qualifying for Signature Events in 2025, as well as THE PLAYERS.
  • After the BMW Championship, the top 30 will move on to the season-ending TOUR Championship (August 26-September 1) at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta where the FedExCup champion will be crowned and awarded a record $25 million bonus.

As with the upcoming 2023 FedExCup Fall, the 2024 FedExCup Fall will finalize top 125 eligibility for the next season, providing exempt status for Full-Field Events, as well as a spot in THE PLAYERS. While players in the top 50 will continue to be eligible for FedExCup Fall events, players ranked No. 51 and beyond carry over their FedExCup Points from the Regular Season and FedEx St. Jude Championship and will continue to accumulate points through the FedExCup Fall toward their eligibility status for 2025. Additionally, the top 10 players in the FedExCup standings, not otherwise exempt, from the FedExCup Fall are eligible for two Signature Events in 2025 as outlined above – the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational. This allows for trending players to emerge from the FedExCup Fall.

In addition to 500 FedExCup points, benefits of winning during the FedExCup Fall include a two-year PGA TOUR exemption, entry to the season-opening The Sentry and THE PLAYERS, as well as eligibility into those Major Championships that invite PGA TOUR winners.

Some additional items to note for 2024:

  • The 2024 FedExCup Regular Season and Playoffs include events contested in the United States (33), Mexico, Scotland (2), Canada, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
  • The Sony Open in Hawaii (January 8-14), a Full-Field event, will mark the debut of the PGA TOUR’s new members from the DP World Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry.
  • Due to a crowded sports calendar, the Farmers Insurance Open (January 22-27) played in San Diego will feature a Saturday primetime finish on CBS/Paramount+ for the third consecutive season. The fifth annual APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational will be played January 27-28.
  • Mexico’s national open, the Mexico Open at Vidanta (February 19-25), moves to February after being contested in April 2023.
  • The TOUR will return to South Florida for the 52nd playing of The Classic in The Palm Beaches (February 26-March 3) at PGA National Resort. The TOUR expects to announce a new title sponsor in the near future.
  • With support from Proud Partners Comcast Business, Optum and Morgan Stanley, THE PLAYERS Championship (March 11-17), the TOUR’s flagship event at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, will be contested for the 50th time in 2024.
  • With a new five-year title sponsor, the Texas Children’s Houston Open (March 25-31) moves from the fall portion of the schedule to March.
  • The Myrtle Beach Classic (May 6-12), a 300-FedExCup point event played additionally the week of the Wells Fargo Championship, debuts at Dunes Golf & Beach Club. Other Additional Events in 2024 include the Puerto Rico Open (March 4-10), Corales Puntacana Championship (April 15-21), TBA event (July 8-14) and Barracuda Championship (July 15-21). The TOUR expects to make an announcement soon on the July 8-14 TBA event.
  • For the third consecutive season, three tournaments will be part of both the FedExCup and the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai: Genesis Scottish Open (July 8-14), which is co-sanctioned by both Tours; the TBA event scheduled for July 8-14; and the Barracuda Championship (July 15-21), which allow access to DP World Tour members.
  • The RBC Canadian Open (May 27-June 2) returns to Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada for the first time since 2019.
  • The PGA TOUR will not hold an event the week of July 29-August 4, when the Men’s Olympic Golf Competition will be contested at Le Golf National in Paris. The 2024 FedExCup Regular Season concludes the following week at the Wyndham Championship (August 5-11).
  • The 15th Presidents Cup (September 24-29) heads to The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where the International Team, captained by Mike Weir, will face off against the U.S. Team, captained by Jim Furyk. The three Global Partners of the Presidents Cup are Citi, Cognizant and Rolex.

Domestically, the PGA TOUR season will be televised on CBS/Paramount+, NBC/Golf Channel/Peacock and PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+.

In 2024, the competition will officially begin on January 4th. There are officially 36 events starting in January with the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

The newest edition to the signature events will be the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. As an signature event, it’ll give newer players a chance to qualify for other tournaments throughout the year.

Unlike this past season, signature events are only expected to feature 70-80 players. Every signature event will require players to qualify via FedEx Cup rankings or by playing their way in.

In total, the Tour will have 33 events played in the U.S., two in Mexico and Scotland. The PGA Tour will also stop in Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

There’s more on the line this year too and the purses are bigger than ever. While not all purses have been announced, most signature events are valued at $20 million or more.

PGA Tour schedule 2024: Notable changes include only three signature events with 36-hole cuts

The pga tour has officially announced its 2024 schedule, and it has undergone a facelift.

pga-tour-logo-june-2018.jpg

The PGA Tour released its official 2024 regular-season and FedEx Cup Playoffs schedule Monday, and it looks different than it ever has before. The most notable change -- beyond returning to a calendar-year season for the first time in a decade -- is that only three of the eight signature events (formerly known as designated) will feature a standard 36-hole cut.

In total, there will be 36 regular-season events and three postseason tournaments on the calendar with eight receiving signature status alongside the 50th playing of The Players Championship and the four major championships. Of the eight signature events, the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament will feature 36-hole cuts as a field of 80 players will be trimmed to the top 50 and ties at the halfway point.

Eligibility for signature events includes the top 50 finishers from the 2022-23 FedEx Cup standings, "The Next 10" -- the top 10 in that year's FedEx Cup standings (not otherwise exempt), "The Swing 5" -- the top five points earners from full-field events between signature events (not otherwise exempt) -- the top 30 in the Official World Golf Rankings and all tournament winners from the current season. Each signature event will also have four sponsor exemptions.

No cuts will be made made at The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship or Travelers Championship as well as the three FedEx Cup Playoffs events. Signature events will not be mandatory for top players in 2024, though they will still have significantly bigger purses.

The Pebble Beach Pro-Am receives signature status in lieu of the WM Phoenix Open, which will once again conclude on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 11). The Phoenix Open is not the only tournament to be affected in the new schedule as the Canadian Open will be moved up one week on the calendar and switch spots with the Memorial.

The Memorial will now be played in June kicking off a stretch of three straight high-level events with the U.S. Open and Travelers Championship to follow. The 2024 Paris Olympics will affect the schedule, too, as the competition takes place the week before the Wyndham Championship, pushing the regular-season finale and the postseason back by a week.

Following the 2024 season, the FedEx Cup Fall emerges where players will jostle for positioning ahead of the 2025 season. The FedEx Cup Fall will finalize the top 125 eligibility and provide exempt status into full-field events as well as the Players Championship. Players ranked No. 51 or higher from the previous year's FedEx Cup will carry over their points into the fall and continue to accumulate towards their eligibility status.

The top 10 finishers from the FedEx Cup Fall, not otherwise exempt, will be eligible for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational. Winners during the FedEx Cup Fall will also receive a two-year PGA Tour exemption, entry into The Sentry and the Players Championships as well as invitations to major championships that exempt PGA Tour winners.

The FedEx Cup Fall portion of the 2024 PGA Tour schedule will be announced at a later date.

Notable changes to 2024 PGA Tour schedule

  • Signature events are not mandatory for star players
  • 700 FedEx Cup points awarded to the winner of signature events
  • Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial will be 80-man fields with 36-hole cuts for top 50 and ties
  • Signature events with no 36-hole cuts: The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, Travelers Championship and FedEx Cup Playoffs
  • The Memorial will be played the week prior to the U.S. Open
  • $25 million bonus will be awarded to 2024 FedEx Cup champion, up from $18 million in 2023

Golf news: PGA Tour reveals 2024 schedule with Signature Events

The PGA Tour announced eight Signature Events in revealing its schedule for 2024.

Michael Corvo

The PGA Tour unveiled its 2024 schedule, featuring a slew of notable changes amidst the pending partnership with LIV Golf, the DP World Tour, and the Saudi Arabia-backed Public Investment Fund. ( Tiger Woods recently joined Rory McIlroy and others on the policy board, which helped formulate the revamped calendar.)

The PGA Tour is rebranding its calendar as the 2024 FedExCup Season. The 2024 FedExCup Regular Season will consist of 36 events, beginning with what's being called the “Opening Drive” at The Sentry and Sony Open in Hawaii in January. The regular season will culminate at the Wyndham Championship, which Lucas Glover won this past Sunday. The calendar also includes 18 Full-Field Events and five Additional Events.

Once again, 70 players will advance to the FedExCup Playoffs.

What had been known as “Designated” events will be renamed “Signature” events. The eight Signature events will feature limited fields and increased prize money and FedExCup points. Listed below are the eight Signature Events. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course was not a designated event in 2023.

  • The Sentry — Jan. 3-7
  • AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am — Jan. 31-Feb. 4
  • The Genesis Invitational — Feb. 14-18
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational — Mar. 6-10
  • RBC Heritage — Apr. 19-21
  • Wells Fargo Championship — May 8-12
  • The Memorial — June 5-9
  • Travelers Championship — June 19-23

The three player-host tournaments — Tiger's The Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the Memorial — will have 36-hole cuts. The five other Signature events will not have a cut.

Overall, the Tour is aiming to connect tournaments in unprecedented ways over the course of a linear 12-month season. Each of the Signature Events will leave room in the field for “The Next 1o” and “The Swing 5”, based on FedExCup standings.

pga tour 2024 signature events

Nerves on the first tee – we’ve all had them. Even two-time major winners such as John Daly.

We’ve long become accustomed to JD hitting tape-measure drives, which is what made the following swing so startling. On Friday, the 57-year-old got off to an inauspicious start, topping his opening tee shot during the first round of the 2024 Hoag Classic, a PGA Tour Champions event held at Newport Beach Country Club in Newport Beach, California.

We’ve pretty much seen it all from The Wild Thing during his rollercoaster career but topping his opening tee shot may have been a first. Daly looked anxious to hit and nearly did so before the first-tee announcer had a chance to call his name. Daly backed off the tee shot when his name was announced and re-started his routine. Daly made “Grip it and Rip it,” a household catchphrase among golfers and led the PGA Tour in driving distance 11 times, but Long John was short of the forward tees with his dribbler off the tee, at least on this occasion.

Daly, who has been struggling with injuries all season, shot 74-75 and was in last place out of the field of 77 heading into Sunday’s final round. Earlier this season, Daly needed an injection in his left hand after his osteoarthritis flared up, and he shot 87 at an event in Morocco. But no matter what, Daly always entertains. The video below shows his one-of-a-kind pre-round warm-up routine. Unfortunately, it turns out he wasn’t ready to roll this week, unless they were referring to his opening topped shot, which is destined for a long future in golf bloopers. Here’s hoping better days are ahead for Big John.

John Daly.

John Daly is known for his easy-going attitude, mammoth drives, and his love for diet cokes .

But the big-hitter did not have one of his signature tee shots at the Hoag Classic, a tournament on the PGA Tour Champions .

Instead, Daly looked like a 25-handicapper at a local municipal course. He shanked his tee shot on the first hole of the tournament, surprising both the crowd and himself.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fore Play (@foreplaypod)

Before his mishit, Daly stepped up and addressed his ball, and looked as if he was ready to hit his opening tee shot. Then the starter announced his name at the point of address, interrupting his pre-shot routine.

That must have thrown Daly off, as his tee shot did not go anywhere. He proceeded to make a double-bogey six on the opening hole, and went on to struggle on his front nine.

Two more bogies and another double followed as Daly went out with a 6-over 41.

But the two-time major champion steadied the ship on the back nine. He made his first birdie of the day at the par-4 12th and then poured in another one at the par-5 15th.

At that juncture, Daly was 5-over on the day and at the bottom of the leaderboard. But he closed his day much better than how he began it. Daly closed with two straight birdies to shoot a 3-under 33 on the back nine, thus totaling a 3-over 75 overall.

Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand shot a 9-under 62 on day one and leads Padraig Harrington and Paul Broadhurst by a stroke going into round two.

Olympics moving closer to adding mixed golf team event for 2028 in Los Angeles

Next on the horizon is the Olympics.

The format is already set for the 2024 Summer Olympics at Le Golf National outside Paris. Just like in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro, there will be 72-hole competitions for the men and the women. But Olympic officials are close to finalizing a team competition for the 2028 Games at Riviera in Los Angeles.

One person involved in the talks said an announcement could come as early as the Masters. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details are not completed.

Among the details are how many teams would play and the format of the competition. The current plan for 2028 is for the men to start on Wednesday (instead of Thursday) and finish on Saturday. The team competition could take place on Sunday and Monday. The women would have a practice round on Tuesday and start their competition on Wednesday.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) tends to frown on awarding two medals from one competition, such as combining scores from individuals into a team medal. That's why golf officials are proposing a separate event.

Still to be determined is how many countries will be eligible to compete. One option currently being discussed is 36 holes of Four-ball to decide the team medalists.

The IOC would do well to consider singles. To have a team format (Foursomes or Four-ball) on Sunday, followed by singles scores from each male and female player could produce 54-hole scores.

Such is the format used at the Summer Youth Olympics, where golf was played first in 2014. At the last such competition, Atthaya Thitikul was part of the Thai team that won the gold over Akshay Bhatia and Lucy Li of the United States.

A mixed-team event would require only two more days for the players.

Lydia Ko and Jason Day won the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational. Ko already has a silver and a bronze in her two Olympic appearances.
