Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds have confirmed they will be going on an arena tour around the UK in 2023.

The group will kick off the tour on 30 th August at Hull’s Bonus Arena, before stopping off at Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Glasgow and finishing up at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena on 21 st December.

Last week, Noel shared his latest single from the album, Dead To The World, which he said was his “favourite tune on the album”.

Speaking about the track, he added: “It’s not like anything else I’ve ever done before. It’s very melancholic, but I like that. I’m a Gemini – I’m as up as I am down, and the trick is to meet somewhere in the middle and turn that into music.”

This comes after rumours have been flying that Oasis might be getting back together .

Liam Gallagher was asked by a fan whether he could see the group reforming earlier this month and he responded: “It’s happening”.

However, Noel had something different to say and when asked the same during an interview, he said: “There’s something in the papers back in England today. “Yeah, I understand it, yeah. No one has really come along to take our place."

He continued: "He should get his people to call my people; they know who they are, they know where we are. Stop talking on the f*****g internet, and let’s see what you’ve got to say."

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds have announced an arena tour of the UK this year, to go alongside the release of their new album Council Skies.

This tour will follow on from a smaller one around the UK which the band are heading on this summer. The arena tour then picks up with one date in August, but the majority of dates will take place in December 2023, with the final date just in time for Christmas on Thursday 21st December.

This will be the band's fourth studio album, which will be released on 2nd June 2023. Singles released from the new album, including Dead to the World, have been well received by fans.

Noel Gallagher first shot to fame in the early '90s as part of Oasis with his brother Liam. Best known for iconic songs like Champagne Supernova and Wonderwall, the Britpop giant Oasis broke up in 2009 following a somewhat infamous falling out between the two brothers. Noel Gallagher went on to form the High Flying Birds in 2010 after which they released a self-titled album. It went double platinum in the UK in 2011 and has since sold upwards of 2.5 million copies around the world.

The band has toured extensively across the UK and internationally for each of their albums. After the success of their last album, Back the Way We Came, a compilation album released in 2021, plus a successful set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival last summer, this is set to be an exciting tour.

Noel Gallagher's legendary career in pictures:

Noel, paul, liam and peggy gallagher in 1974.

Noel Thomas David Gallagher was born in Longsight, Manchester on 29th May 1967. He was the middle child of Peggy (née Sweeney) and Thomas Gallagher and was born two years after older sibling Paul. Their younger sibling William John Paul Gallagher (Liam) was born five years after Noel in September 1972. Pictured are the three Gallagher brothers with mum Peggy in 1974.

Noel Gallagher's childhood home

Soon after Liam's birth, the Gallaghers moved to Ashby Avenue and then to Cranwell Drive in Burnage (pictured). With a violent and alcoholic father, Noel and his brothers had an unhappy childhood before mum Peggy left Thomas in 1982 with her three children. In his teenage years, Noel was expelled from school for throwing flour on a teacher and he received six months' probation for robbing a corner shop alongside a friend – something he later admitted was a "very stupid thing to do."

Noel Gallagher's hero Johnny Marr with Morrissey

Noel Gallagher found salvation from his brush with the law through music. He taught himself to play guitar and witnessing The Smiths on Top of the Pops in 1983 proved to be a pivotal moment in his life. Noel noted in 2007: "I remember seeing The Smiths on Top Of The Pops, and I don't mean this in a sycophantic way, but I wanted to be Johnny Marr. He had the Brian Jones haircut, the turtleneck, and the big red semi-acoustic guitar and he was cool as f---."

Noel Gallagher at the Hacienda

Noel Gallagher at the legendary Hacienda nightclub in Manchester in 1989. He later said that the unity and togetherness of the acid house scene "changed my life." During the late 1980s he spent many years unemployed, however for a short period he did land a job at British Gas in the company's storehouse where he spent time writing songs, including an embryonic version of Oasis' future anthem 'Live Forever.'

Noel Gallagher the Inspiral Carpets roadie

In 1988, Noel Gallagher formed a friendship with Inspiral Carpets guitarist Graham Lambert after they met at a Stone Roses show. Noel unsuccessfully applied to become their lead singer in 1989 – losing out to Tom Hingley – but became a roadie for the band over the next three years alongside van driver Mark Collins, who later joined The Charlatans. Pictured is Noel setting up for the Inspiral Carpets in Manchester in the early 90s.

Noel Gallagher becomes 'The Chief' of Oasis

With Noel on the road with Inspiral Carpets, younger brother Liam joined a band called The Rain alongside founding members Paul McGuigan (bass), Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs (guitars), Tony McCarroll (drums). Upon the suggestion of Liam, the band changed their name to Oasis after Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon. Noel approached Oasis and asked to become their leader and songwriter – hence his nickname The Chief – and brought a cavalcade of songs and ideas with him. The rest, they say, is history.

Oasis signed to Creation Records

Oasis spent the next year finely honing their craft and in spring 1993 recorded the 8-song demo tape Live Demonstration featuring raw versions of future Oasis classics including 'Rock N' Roll Star'. Ahead of the demo's release, Oasis drove six hours to play a gig at Glasgow King Tut's in May 1993 where, unbeknownst to them, Creation Records boss Alan McGee was in attendance. He signed Oasis on the spot. Pictured is Noel Gallagher on stage at The Water Rats in London in January 1994.

Noel Gallagher writes Oasis' debut album 'Definitely Maybe'

Featuring 11 songs all penned by Noel Gallagher, including 'Supersonic', 'Shakermaker', 'Live Forever' and 'Cigarettes & Alcohol', Oasis' seminal debut album 'Definitely Maybe' was released in 1994 and it became the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time. Not just one of the greatest albums of the Britpop era, it's also one of the finest records of all time.

Oasis in 1994

Oasis prepare to take on the world in 1994.

Noel Gallagher with Liam in 1995

Noel Gallagher and his younger brother Liam in June 1995 shortly before the release of Oasis' second album '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?'. Featuring timeless Noel-penned anthems incluing 'Wonderwall', 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'Champagne Supernova', the album has sold more than 22 million units globally including a phenomenal 4.7 million in the UK alone.

Noel Gallagher performs at Maine Road with Oasis

Six months after the release of their blockbuster second studio album '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?', Oasis played two colossal concerts at Maine Road stadium – home of Noel and Liam's beloved Manchester City – on 27th and 28th April 1996. Noel commented in 2019: "They were amazing gigs and it will never be repeated."

'This is history!' - Oasis rock Knebworth

Oasis arguably reached the zenith of their popularity in August 1996 when they played to 80,000 people over two nights at Loch Lomond in Scotland, and a historic 250,000 fans at their two Knebworth House mega-concerts. Noel famously said on stage at Knebworth: "This is history. This is history. Right here. Right now. This is history!" He wasn't wrong.

Noel Gallagher marries Meg Mathews

Oasis' third album 'Be Here Now' was a record-breaker in August 1997, selling a whopping 813,000 in its first seven days in the UK. Noel later stated that the success of predecessor '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' had an adverse effect on the follow-up record, saying: "I started to overthink it." He also said 'Be Here Now's popularity didn't indicate it was a great album, explaining: "Just because you sell lots of records, it doesn't mean to say you're any good. Look at Phil Collins."

Noel duly played all the guitar parts on Oasis' fourth studio album 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants' in 2000 before Gem Archer was recruited to replace Bonehead. Andy Bell later joined on bass. Notably, 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants' was the first Oasis record not to be written entirely by Noel, with Liam penning the track 'Little James'.

Oasis release 'Heathen Chemistry'

Noel Gallagher relinquished the songwriting baton yet further on July 2002's 'Heathen Chemistry' with Liam Gallagher penning three songs, and Gem Archer and Andy Bell a song apiece. Noel was responsible for two of the record's standout tunes, however – 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' and 'Little by Little.'

Oasis' final two albums

Noel Gallagher quits Oasis

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds have gone on to release two more chart-topping studio albums – 2015's 'Chasing Yesterday' and 2017's 'Who Built the Moon?'. Speaking to Absolute Radio in 2021 , Noel said that making the critically lauded 'Who Built the Moon?' with producer David Holmes is the standout moment of his solo career so far. Noel told us: "It turned everything that I've ever done, and everything that I do, and the way that I do it, upside down, and threw it all up in the air. We came up with something completely different."

Fourth High Flying Birds album 'Council Skies'

Released on Friday 2nd June 2023, 'Council Skies' features 10 tracks including the singles 'Pretty Boy' and 'Easy Now.' Noel Gallagher explains that 'Council Skies' harks back to the early 90s before he achieved global fame as the guitarist and songwriter with Oasis. "It's going back to the beginning," Noel says. "Daydreaming, looking up at the sky and wondering about what life could be… that's as true to me now as it was in the early '90s. When I was growing up in poverty and unemployment, music took me out of that." He added: "Top Of The Pops on TV transformed your Thursday night into this fantasy world, and that's what I think music should be. I want my music to be elevating and transforming in some way."

Noel Gallagher Launches UK Tour in Buckinghamshire with Vindaloo Celebration!

by Kieran White | Jun 14, 2023

“I lived in Buckinghamshire for many years, but I’m pretty sure we’ve never played a show there, so it’s great to be kicking off our UK summer outdoor dates at PennFest. I’m looking forward to seeing Johnny (Marr) and watching his set, and maybe I’ll even have time for a Vindaloo at my old haunt, Milton’s Cottage in Chalfont St Giles!” – Noel Gallagher

Returning this July for its twelfth edition, PennFest promises to deliver the best line-up yet! A two-day festival with optional camping, PennFest is held in picturesque countryside near the village of Penn Street – just 26 miles from central London. Headlined by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on 21 July, this will be their first UK live performance of 2023. Day 2 of the festival sees headliners, Bastille on Saturday July 22, as 2023 marks the 10th Anniversary of the band’s million-selling, twice UK No.1 debut album, ‘Bad Blood’. PennFest is a fantastic multi-genre line-up which has something for every music lover. Weekend tickets from £100 / day tickets from £55 (+ booking fee), check pennfest.co.uk/tickets for details.

Since forming in 2011, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds have released three No.1 studio albums and a No.1 Best Of (2021’s ‘Back The Way We Came’), whilst establishing themselves as an incredible touring band and festival headline act. This week, their critically acclaimed fourth studio album ‘Council Skies’, smashed in at No2 in the UK album charts. Described as “a belting reminder of why Oasis was so great,’ by The Times in their five-star review, ‘Council Skies’ features long-time friend and collaborator – and fellow PennFest 2023 performer – Johnny Marr on guitar on three tracks including ‘Pretty Boy’, while Milly Alcock (House Of The Dragon) stars in the official video for ‘Easy Now’.

Gallagher, who has just begun a small run of March tour dates , officially kicked off the tour in Poole’s Lighthouse venue on March 17. He is also due to visit Portsmouth tonight (March 20), before finishing up his March mini-tour at London’s Royal Albert Hall on the 21 for Teenage Cancer Trust .

At Poole, Gallagher unveiled his cover of ‘Stand By Me’ at the beginning of his encore. As Gallagher returned to the stage, he said: “Does anyone know a song called ‘Stand By Me?’ Well, I’m going to play it.” To the delight of concertgoers, who joined in immediately, Gallagher proceeded to officially perform the song for the first time with The High Flying Birds.

During the night, Gallagher also played High Flying Birds favourite ‘Lock All The Doors’ and Oasis’ ‘Talk Tonight’, both of which reportedly have not been performed live since 2019.

Noel Gallagher is also due to tour the UK during the summer for a series of shows. the tour will include stops at London’s Ally Pally and Warwick Castle, where he will be joined by Johnny Marr  and  The Waeve . Find all tour dates below and get tickets here.

JULY 2024 17 – Cardiff Castle 18 – Wigan, Robin Park 20 – London, Alexandra Palace Park 21 – Warwick, Warwick Castle

AUGUST 2024 1 – Halifax, The Piece Hall

The frontman is reportedly  heading to the studio to record his next solo album , which he has teased has “two albums worth”. “I’ve had to stop writing because I need to get these songs recorded and get them out there so I can write some more,” he said.

NME  spoke to Gallagher in June last year, where he opened up about recording with Johnny Marr: “Sadly, we’ve never sat down to write a song,” he told us. “We’ve talked about it for a while.”

“For the three tracks that he plays on, I had the idea that Johnny would be able to play something great on it – I could just hear it and knew it. With ‘Pretty Boy’, it’s so linear and gets to that point where it just motors along. I knew it needed something. I didn’t get loads of people to try it, I was going to ask Johnny to do it from the off.

“It’s a funny thing with Johnny,” Gallagher continued. “He doesn’t get you to send him the track, he turns up, plugs his gear in, puts his guitar on, stands in front of the speakers and says, ‘Right, let’s hear it’. As he’s hearing it for the first time, he plays it. I wouldn’t tell him what to play, I wouldn’t be so cheeky.”

“Noel Gallagher gave me one of Peter Green’s Gibson Les Pauls. Johnny Marr had given Noel a guitar, and maybe he felt it was customary that he do the same”: Bill Ryder-Jones on his ascent to UK indie rock royalty

The former Coral guitarist has gone on to release captivating solo material. He shares stories of recording with Noel Gallagher, tracking solos with Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, and why he isn’t as good a player as he used to be – but he’s OK with that

Bill Ryder-Jones

As a teenager, Bill Ryder-Jones was the lead guitarist of The Coral, whose single Dreaming of You was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2002. He didn’t just play guitar on the track – which came off the band’s self-titled debut record – but also played trumpet and nabbed a co-producer credit.

Ryder-Jones stuck with The Coral until 2008 before going solo, taking up session work with Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and launching Yawn Studio, where he produces artists from his hometown village of West Kirby.

With his trusty ’63 Gibson ES-335 and one of Peter Green’s guitars in hand (more on that later), Ryder-Jones is as busy as ever on the recorded music front, with his latest record lechyd Da having landed via Domino Records on January 12.

At 40, and with a host of credits under his belt, his viewpoint on the guitar has changed – as has his skillset. “I think I might struggle to play some of my parts from when I was 16,” he laughs. “But I think I write better guitar parts now, as I’m looking for very sweet-sounding and melodic things.”

How did your latest record, lechyd Da, get started?

“It started after I met this girl, and we’d send each other songs that meant something, as you do. I’d send her one, she’d send me one, and we made a collaborative playlist on a streaming site with all sorts of songs that I loved.

“The songs she’d send back all had something in common – I don’t know what but there was something in them, and it became an idea to make a record that had the same feeling as the songs we’d been showing each other. It was quite romantic.”

Where are you pulling inspiration from?

“In terms of guitar playing, I’m not sure I think of myself as that much of a guitarist anymore. It used to be my whole life where I’d be sitting around at home and playing guitar. But now I use it as an instrument like I’d use any other.

“I still love [The Verve’s] Nick McCabe’s playing. His choice of notes and textures were great – he was a really wild player. And in terms of songwriting, I’m still sort of in love with the same kinds of things I loved when I was 16: Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, and The Beatles, of course.”

What did your process look like in terms of dialing in the sounds to achieve the overall vibe on lechyd Da ?

“My approach is quite simple. I love my nylon-stringed guitar, which is Spanish. It really works well for my songs, and I have a mic technique that works well. As for the electrics, I’ve got a 1963 Gibson ES-335, so it’s either that or – and this is a bit of a brag – one of Peter Green’s Gibson Les Pauls , which does dual sounds well.

Noel Gallagher purposefully rubbed off Peter Green’s signature to make a point to the guy in the guitar shop

“I have a ’57 Fender Custom Deluxe amp that works nicely, and a Fender Bassman. It was mainly those two, so there’s no real trickery. When I’m playing, if it’s a lead part, it’s got to serve a purpose. I’m not quite as fluent as I probably was in my 20s, so it’s mainly about finding the right melody.”

So how did you end up with the Peter Green Les Paul ?

“Oh, well! It’s another name drop – it was given to me by Noel Gallagher in 2006 when I was 23. The Coral were making a record in Noel’s studio, Wheeler End Studios, and I’d used this Les Paul for most of it, not knowing it was Peter Green’s.

“I think Johnny Marr had given Noel a guitar, and maybe he felt it was customary that he do the same. I had no money at the time – my only good guitar was my 335. Of course, I had guitars that I loved, but in terms of guitars that were worth more than £500, the 335 was all I had.”

Did Noel tell you how he’d ended up with it?

“When he gave it to me he told me a story about how a guitar shop owner didn’t want to sell it to him. The guy didn’t know who Noel was – he’d somehow not heard of Oasis. But Noel saw the guitar on the top shelf behind the counter and said, ‘Can I have a go with that Les Paul?’

“And the guy behind the counter goes, ‘Erm, you do know that was Peter Green’s, and it’s signed by Peter Green, right?’ He reluctantly got it down. Noel spat on his T-shirt and rubbed off the signature! And he said, ‘Doesn’t matter now – I’ll take it anyway.’

“That’s a very Noel thing to do and a very funny story. I woulda loved for it to have Peter Green’s signature. I probably would have sold it by now, and had a house! But I’m so very thankful I didn’t do that. It’s a cracking guitar. It’s got the out-of-phase pickup, and it’s so bloody heavy, so I can hardly play it.”

Bill Ryder-Jones' Gibson Les Paul

Just so we’re clear, was that a fake signature that Noel rubbed off, or did he rub off Peter Green’s actual signature?

“Oh, he purposefully rubbed off Peter Green’s signature to make a point to the guy in the guitar shop. Noel thought he was being a bit rude, you know?”

Noel is a great example of someone who plays guitar but probably identifies as a songwriter first. Do you see that in what you’re doing now?

“I couldn’t make any comparisons between Noel Gallagher and myself. He’s fucking Noel Gallagher to start! Obviously I remember how Oasis changed my life, being a Northern lad in the ‘90s, but I consider myself a musician first. I like making music, and it happens that I sing on it, too, because that’s what you do, right?

I don’t think I’m as good as I was… Back then it was my whole life; my job was being in a band

“I’ve met Noel on several occasions, and – especially in my early days – I had the greatest respect for Noel’s playing. His style is very signature. You don’t have to be overly dexterous as it’s a lot of blues pentatonic.

“That was a great way to have a great introduction to playing rock ‘n’ roll when you didn’t have any sort of musical education. His most powerful songs are largely major chord-based, and there’s not a lot of madness going on in the chord structures, which I like because I like to keep things simple.”

You made some outstanding music with The Coral. How have you changed as a guitarist since then?

“I don’t think I’m as good as I was. I’m better in some ways, but I’m also not as good as I was. Back then it was my whole life; my job was being in a band.

“I was actually out last night with [Coral rhythm guitarist] James Skelly for a few drinks. He’s always been very sweet about my playing and my importance in the early days. But I don’t know – I was always trying to impress him!

“That’s really what I was striving for back in those days. These days, I can still make some decent sounds, but I don’t always get a chance to do some of that stuff because the music doesn’t call for a lot of big guitars. I’m much more interested in sort of subtle lines and earworms.

“One thing that’s remained constant for me is the playing of a guy like John Head from Shack. He’s always tasteful and never does too much. I’m much less impressed by guitar playing than I was, and I’m more into melodies now.”

You also contributed some guitars to the Arctic Monkeys‘ Fireside from AM . What was that like?

“The AM thing was done remotely, but I knew Alex Turner because I’d already worked with him on his solo EP Submarine . I love Alex’s writing, and I did learn a lot because his songwriting craft is up there with the very best.

“He’s got an amazing mind for creating a song and knows where to take a song. And he’s got a very singular, individual approach to writing lyrics. He’s not a fucking bad guitarist either! He can construct amazing melodies; he’s one of the greatest writers alive.

I used to stay in one position and let the chords move around me. I’m now more interested in jumping through the scales of corresponding chords

“But AM was done while the Arctic Monkeys were in LA and I was in London. I had done a few lines, and he said, ‘I want you to do something that Bill would do.’ I felt like I should do something the Arctic Monkeys would do, but Alex said, ‘We’ve asked you because we want you to do Bill.’

“After that, things were much easier. I put a reverb pedal on and just did what came naturally. The whole experience was wild – an honor, really. But he hasn’t asked me again; they haven’t asked me back, so I couldn’t have been that good!”

Alex is always open-minded about what he’s doing; maybe he’ll ask again in the future.

“And maybe I’ll say yes again in the future! I could do with the fucking money, I’ll tell you that much!”

Which of the songs on lechyd Da is most representative of the player you are today?

“I think there’s some really nice guitar on How Beautiful I Am . It’s got that sort of thing I was talking about earlier, and it’s got one of the few guitar solos on the record. It might be the only solo, so I’d have to pick that.

“Playing over minor chords like that can be a challenge because when you use blues pentatonics, it takes things somewhere else. It makes things a bit more melodic, whereas I used to largely stay in one position and let the chords move around me.

“I’m now more interested in sort of jumping through the scales of corresponding chords; I think that makes things more conversational. But in terms of writing, all these songs are incredibly meaningful. That’s why they’re on the record.”

What’s next for you?

“I’m just been on tour and I’ve got some production stuff on tap, too. I’ve got some good artists booked into my studio. Then I’m going to write another EP for the end of the year, I believe, to ‘keep the campaign alive’, which was the phrase used to sell me on the idea!

“But now, I’m gonna go for a pint! I’ve been at it all day and it’s meant to be my day off, so I’m going down the pub to relax a bit. Other than that, I try not to think too far ahead.”

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Oasis’ 30th anniversary tour will feature two Gallaghers – but which ones?

Liam Gallagher and Gene Gallagher

Liam Gallagher just revealed that he won’t be the only Gallagher embarking on the Definitely Maybe 30 Years Tour.

The 51-year-old singer-songwriter – who will perform Oasis’ debut album on twelve dates across the UK and Ireland – will be joined on tour by his son Gene Gallagher and his band Villanelle.

Liam’s brother Noel Gallagher , 56, has reportedly refused the invitation to join his brother on the nostalgic tour.

‘If Liam wants to do the show, great. He’s got to make a living and all of that. Keep the flame alive. It’s not something I particularly would be able to put my heart and soul into,’ Noel told SPIN magazine.

But just because Noel won’t be appearing doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of the Gallagher family represented.

Liam surprised fans by dropping the news that his 22-year-old son’s band will be supporting him for the string of dates after a fan asked what he thinks of Gene’s musical ventures on X.

There good I’m gonna put them on 1st for DM tour — Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher) March 31, 2024

Liam replied that he thinks his son’s band has potential.

‘[They’re] good I’m gonna put them on 1st for DM tour,’ he posted.

Gene Gallagher

After another fan, @sasukitoo, responded, ‘best dad ever,’ Liam humorously replied: ‘I wouldn’t go that far but I’m the best 1 he’s got.’

I wouldn’t go that far but I’m the best 1 he’s got — Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher) March 31, 2024

Villanelle is set to hit the road as support for the much-anticipated tour alongside bands Cast and The View.

Although they haven’t released any official tracks yet, Villanelle has been making waves by sharing the stage with Brummie rockers Overpass on their recent tour.

Notably, they rocked the iconic King Tut’s in Glasgow on March 21, a venue steeped in musical history where Oasis famously inked their deal with Creation Records.

The Gallagher Brothers At The Albert Hall

In a fan-posted video of Villanelle, Liam’s son appears to be on lead vocals and guitar.

Liam first announced the tour with his trademark cheek in October.

He posted on Instagram: ‘I’m bouncing around the house to announce the Definitely Maybe Tour. The most important album of the ‘90s bar none. I wouldn’t be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let’s celebrate together LG x.’

https://www.instagram.com/p/CydldsyKp3L/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

The tour is set to launch June 2 in Sheffield and will run through June 27, finishing up in Manchester.

Liam will also be visiting cities including London, Dublin, and Glasgow.

The tour will be the first time Liam has performed Definitely Maybe since the band broke up in 2009.

The album cemented Oasis as Brit-pop royalty, becoming the fastest-selling album in British history at the time. The album – which features Noel on lead guitar, backing vocals, and as chief songwriter and Liam Gallagher on lead vocals – has been certified eight times platinum.

Liam  told fans who wondered about Noel’s presence , ‘He’s been asked and he’s refused,’ causing many to wonder just how rocky the brother’s relationship remains over a decade after their infamous rift.

Liam Gallagher Defends Shorter Show Length: “We’re Not Here To Be F***ing Famous”

by Erinn Callahan April 11, 2024, 2:17 pm

In 2022, ex-Stones Roses guitarist John Squire joined former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher onstage for “Champagne Supernova.” That sole encounter grew into a partnership, and the pair dropped their joint collaborative album in March. They have since kicked off a sold-out UK and Ireland tour. Squire and Gallagher have mostly stuck to the basics, limiting their setlist to the collaboration’s 10 tracks. The “Wonderwall” songwriter recently elaborated on that decision in an interview with NME .

Videos by American Songwriter

Liam gallagher is glad there’s only 10 songs.

Not everyone is happy with the setlist. After a March show in Glasgow, Scotland, one Instagram user complained , ““50 minutes for £80. The great rock and roll swindle.”

Just feels like Noel is making more of an effort 🙁 pic.twitter.com/sQMGZATu62 — Greg Frain (@Greg_Frain) March 20, 2024

However, Gallagher is quite happy with the choice to stick to 10 songs, despite revealing they had plenty of leftover material.

“I think when you start doing more songs you take the foot off the gas on certain songs,” said the Brit-pop icon, 51. “ Everything  went into these 10 songs.”

[RELATED: The Meaning Behind “Just Another Rainbow” by Liam Gallagher and John Squire and Why It Sounds like Madchester in the ’90s]

In the age of algorithms, many artists adopt a “more is more” approach to album releases. And, according to Gallagher, “Well, they’re just teacher’s f***ing pets, aren’t they?”

“We’re not here to be f***ing famous and try to break into China, go up against f***ing K-pop and that,” the GRAMMY nominee said. “We don’t wanna be f***ing breaking out into too many sweats, you know what I mean? We’re at a certain age now. We don’t wanna look desperate.”

Liam Says There Will Be No Oasis Reunion

Liam rose to Brit-pop prominence as part of Oasis with elder brother/guitarist Noel. The siblings’ fraught relationship led to an abrupt (and very public) split in 2009. Since then, the Manchester rocker has often hinted at a reunion. Even as recently as February , Liam said he could “see it happening” — but only if Noel called him first.

The musician has apparently had a change of heart, however. Former Oasis bassist Andy Bell recently revealed he believed the brothers would reunite — although he admitted, “I don’t think it looks likely right now.”

The “Don’t Look Back in Anger” singer quickly took to X/Twitter to refute Bell’s words. “Andy bell from ride the shoe gazing phenomenon should really not be getting people’s hopes up,” he wrote.

Andy bell from ride the shoe gazing phenomenon should really not be getting people’s hopes up it’s not big and and it’s not clever LG x — Liam Gallagher (@liamgallagher) April 9, 2024

Gallagher added in a later post, “I’ve never mentioned oasis reunion it’s over we must all really move in for our own mental health.”

The Black Keys ditch insecurities and enlist Beck, Noel Gallagher, hip-hop on new album

noel gallagher tour uk 2023

The Black Keys are renowned for their bracing garage rock, an elastic intertwining of blues and fuzzy guitars that has garnered them critical acclaim and a string of hits.

But on their 12 th studio album, “Ohio Players,” Akron natives Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney streamline the guttural thundering of “Lonely Boy” and “Lo/Hi” for a bit of a stylistic makeover.

The first single “Beautiful People (Stay High)” is unabashed pop-rock, while tracks written with Beck and Noel Gallagher follow similar melodic trails.

“Ohio Players,” out Friday, will be supported by the 31-date International Players Tour , which traverses the U.S. Sept. 17-Nov. 12. Tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. local time Friday via livenation.com.

In a recent joint conversation, Carney and Auerbach explained the influence of “record hangs” on their new songs, how hip-hop from Juicy J and Lil Noid blended into their sound and why Beck is “a superhero talent.”

More: Almost 60, Lenny Kravitz talks workouts, new music and why he's 'never felt more vibrant'

Question: The album title is obviously a connection with you guys being from Ohio, but is it also a nod to The Ohio Players?

Patrick Carney: It is, and maybe in a subtle way this album cover to their album covers.

Dan Auerbach: Naming albums is almost the most difficult part (of the process).

Carney: You have to frame your work so it’s creative and it makes sense, but it’s hard to explain how you arrive at a decision. We’ve been doing these record hangs, where we play 45s at pop-up parties and invite friends to join us, so one of the guest DJs threw on an Ohio Players 45 and it was like, ‘ahhh.’”

Songs like “Don’t Let Me Go” and “Beautiful People (Stay High)” are a bit more pop-leaning than your usual sound. What prompted that subtle shift?

Auerbach:  We’ve always been attracted to songs that are catchy but also raw. We think it’s really fun to try to write catchy songs. It’s a different type of challenge, With “Beautiful People,” that was a collaboration with (producer) Dan the Automater who we were fans of since high school. He had these loops and little ideas that he created with us in mind.

I hear a little bit of Rare Earth’s “I Just Want to Celebrate” in “Beautiful People.” Am I off base?

Carney: There’s a little bit of everything going on. These record hang nights are influential because we play songs that people mostly aren’t familiar with, like songs that were gold but never were heard either because of a terrible label or the artist died or something.

Auerbach: Like this record “Crumbia de sal” from Cumbia En Moog. It’s this Latin-heavy thing that is so dance-y and sounds so heavy and fresh and new and old. It’s those kind of magical records that we wanted to try to recreate.

What was it like working with Noel Gallagher (“On the Game,” “Only Love Matters”)? Have you been in each other’s orbits long?

Carney: We met Noel twice , in Glastonbury in 2014 and in New York around the same time. We talked to him and he was very cool and as you’d expect, funny. Part of the process of making this album was having fun. We made an effort to get out of Nashville and experience stuff together so we went to LA a lot. Dan wanted to work with Noel and we’re both fans, so we kept reaching out and hearing he doesn’t have time. My neighbor I golf with used to be Oasis’ booking agent for 20 years, so I asked him, “Maybe Noel will be interested?” That’s when Noel got back to us and gave us a window of four days in January (2023) in London.

You had Billy Gibbons on your last album (2002’s “Dropout Boogie”) and Beck, Juicy J and Lil Noid on this one. Do you feel you’re more open to collaborations now?

Auerbach: When we were younger we were far too insecure in our abilities. It’s taken this long to get to this point where we can seriously collaborate. Pat and I have been playing music for 20-plus years and we’re finally at the stage where it feels like the possibilities are limitless.

How did you come to incorporate hip-hop artists like Juicy J and Lil Noid into your songs?

Auerbach:  I was getting into underground Memphis rap from the 1990s and early 2000s, cassette tape stuff really only available on YouTube and like Three Six Mafia and Juicy J. There was the “Paranoid Funk” album Lil Noid made and even being a lifelong rap fan, I’d never heard this stuff. Every time we got in the car after a record hang we’d put on his “Riding in the Chevy” and be like man, it would be fun to work with Lil Noid. He came up to Nashville and he was really cool, a total character.

More: The Beach Boys like never before: Band's first official book is a trove of rare artifacts

And you’ve known Beck since you opened for him in 2003?

Carney: I met him in the ’90s because my uncle was a musician who played with Tom Waits and knew Beck. So he was the first rock star I ever met when I was 16 and obsessed with “Odelay.” We met again in 2003 in New York. We were playing a show with Sleater-Kinney and after the show, the ladies (in Sleater-Kinney) said, “Do you want to go to the ‘Saturday Night Live’ after party?” We said, how are you going to get us in? And they said, “Our friend Beck just performed (on the show).” So we went to some bar and I flipped him a copy of (second album) “Thickfreakness” and that kind of stuff usually results with the CD in the trash can. But he listened to us and invited us to open on his 2003 Sea Change Tour.

So when Beck came in (for this record), we were there for it. If he had suggestions, we were game. He hopped right in and we were able to see why Beck is who Beck is. He’s a superhero talent, a lyrical and melody machine. A song like “This is Nowhere” (co-written with Beck), I don’t think Dan or Beck or I could accomplish on our own. That’s the X factor.
