Jet ski tour in New York City – a complete guide!

Every year it was the same thing: I used to see people riding Jet Ski across the Hudson River here in New York and wondered how amazing that experience should be. And then, someone from Sea and the City contacted me in October last year, inviting me to take a tour. But, I thought it would be something better to do during the Summer season. At the end of May, we finally booked our tour, and I thought it would be interesting to talk about the experience in a post and list important details about this amazing experience!

Choose your tour

There are two available tours: 1 Hour – New York Harbor Tour e 2.5 Hour – Full Manhattan Circle Tour. We did the 1 Hour, which includes Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center, Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport, and Governors Island. The 2.5 tour, obviously, includes more places, like Williamsburg, Long Island City, Roosevelt Island, and George Washington Bridge. Regardless of your choice, remember that you can operate the Jet Ski alone or go with someone (friend, boyfriend, family, etc.). In the middle of the tour, it is possible to switch with your partner.

I think it’s good to explain the word “tour” in this case – what happens here is a group following the instructions and directions from a guide – you must follow a route. But that’s all. You go at your pace and always have someone around to guide you. In my case, I was always one of the last in the group, lol.

• Monday – Thursday:  1 Hour – New York Harbor Tour U$159 + U$49 for an additional rider
• Friday – Sunday: 1 Hour – New York Harbor Tour U$179  + U$49 for an additional rider
• Monday – Thursday:  2.5 Hour – Full Manhattan Circle Tour U$299  + U$59 for an additional rider
• Friday – Sunday: 2.5 Hour – Full Manhattan Circle Tour U$339 + U$59  for an additional rider

Tours departure

Sea and the City is located at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, and the most convenient way to get there is by taking the Liberty Landing Ferry, which leaves from the World Financial Center Terminal (199 Vessey Street) Downtown, next to Brookfield Place, very close to One World Trade Center. Arriving at the terminal, just check the gate on the big screen – the ticket costs $7 (round trip is $14!), and you pay when boarding the Ferry – you do not need to buy a ticket in advance. Check the website and see all the schedules so you can plan your trip and not miss the last boat leaving the park! Once you exit the ferry, turn right, with Manhattan behind you, until you reach the Maritime Center Building. Sea and  the City’s office is behind that building. Important: you have to be there 30 minutes before your tour slot! If you miss the last ferry, don’t worry: just take an Uber from the Marina to Groove St Station, and take the Path back to Manhattan.

What do I need to bring?

Do not forget an ID – otherwise, you do not take the tour, SERIOUSLY. And also, bring the credit card that was used for the reservation. Yes, it is super necessary to make the reservation in advance as there are not many spots on each tour. Bring bathing suits and also a bag to leave your belongings and change the clothes. Sea and the City offers free lockers for your belongings. Another very important thing: if you like your sunglasses, it is not a good idea to ride the Jet Ski wearing them. There are great chances of it falling into the water! Or you can bring some cheap sunglasses, something you will not care about if you lose it.

5. How can I make pictures/videos?

It is not allowed to take cell phones and cameras to the Jet Ski. There are two package options:

• Photos + GoPro – $59 (when booked in advance) or $ 79 (if you decide on time);
• Photo Package – $ 29 (when booked in advance) or $ 39 (if you decide on time).
• But blog readers do not pay for the photo package! Use the code “PeruchiPics” in the reservation comment space to get the photo package for FREE!

If you choose the GoPro package, a camera will be placed in front of your Jet Ski and will record the whole ride. It’s funny to watch our reactions later! After the tour, you will receive the memory card with the video. As for the photos, there are some stops during the tour, and the guide takes the photos. We took pictures at Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty and the city skyline. Photos are emailed 24 hours after the tour!

I’ve never ridden a Jet Ski!

Nor did I! This was one of the first things I asked them about, and guess what? Most people who take the tour have also never ridden a Jet Ski. It is not necessary to have experience. You watch a safety video before the tour, and the guide gives you several tips as well – here comes another important factor: you NEED to understand English, and you need to be able to communicate! I was very excited to do the tour, but, I confess, I was anxious and nervous too. I talked to some people who had already done it (also for the first time), and I felt less worried. Basically, you only use two Jet Ski functions: power on and speed. And that’s it! The more you speed, the more stability you have and, believe me, you will get it! Yes, I was nervous, and tense, but I was concentrating on what I was doing (after all, it was my first time, right?), and it was much easier than I had imagined. Oh, everyone wears a lifejacket, obviously.

Plus, the experience is simply unforgettable. It does not compare to anything I’ve ever done here before- and I’ve seen NYC from different ferries and sailing boats – but nothing, absolutely nothing compares to seeing the city from a Jet Ski! Now that I know how it is, I feel more willing to repeat the experience! Oh, we did the 6:15 pm tour! Remember: you must be 18 to ride the Jet Ski!

But my trip to NYC is during Wintertime…

No problem! There are tours almost all year round – the season starts in March and runs through New Year. They offer appropriate clothing – I even wore a jacket over my bathing suit because I was afraid of getting cold with the wind and water, which occasionally can spills over you.

Have any questions?

Do I need a reservation for a Jet Ski?

Although walk-ins are permitted, we highly encourage making a reservation to ensure your Jet Ski is waiting for you when you arrive.

What are the requirements to rent a Jet Ski?

All persons wishing to operate a Jet Ski must be at least 18 years of age and will need to possess a valid Government PHOTO ID along with a valid credit card.

Is there a Security Deposit for a Jet Ski?

Each Jet Ski rental requires a $250 security deposit along with a $15 damage waiver fee, or a $500 security deposit without the damage waiver fee.  The security deposit can be held as a credit card authorization or in cash. The security deposit is returned upon safe and undamaged return of the Jet Ski.  Unused credit card authorizations are released at the end of each day, but the freeze of funds on your card may be held for 3-10 days depending on the issuing bank and the type of account you have.  We have no control or ability to speed up the release of an authorization.

Is damage protection available?

Yes, we offer an optional damage waiver for $15 that covers the costs of any damages beyond $3,000 to the PWC during your rental period.

Summer is winding down and although we’re running out of weekends, there’s still time to grab some picturesque views on NYC waters! Whether you’re looking for a new view of the skyline or simply an adrenaline rush, there are plenty of places to jet ski in NYC that are perfect to view NYC without the concern of traffic or crowds. In this guide, we put together or favorite companies that offer jet ski rentals and even guided tours! Here are favorite spots to jet ski before fall comes.

1. New York Harbor Jet Ski

The team at New York Harbor Jet Ski will certainly provide you first-class service with their experienced jet skiing knowledge. If you’ve never taken to the water, you don’t know what you’re missing out on!

Tours are offered within the Hudson Bay and start at $165. If you’re visiting the city, opt for the full tours and see all the touristy spots that make NYC as fascinating as it is, all while avoiding the traffic and crowds. The tour guides living nearby will have all the information, so ask away! They sure love to share the information about where they live.

You do not need any prior experience on a jet ski to enjoy the fun but you must be at least 18 to operate one. You can experience the jet ski either solo or duo but your guest must be at least 14 years old to join. To enjoy your time fully, you’ll be given wetsuits, riding gear, safety equipment and a brief class on rules and safety!

On your adventure, you’ll view Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Governors Island, the Empire State Building, and The Hudson yards , all from the water! It makes for a great way to spend a hot day.

With its clever and appropriate name, Sea the City allows you to do just that! From a young age, the owner of this rental company had a passion for boating in NYC and has been providing tourists and locals access to jet skis for years.

On their tours, you’ll “Sea the City” and many of the famous landmarks in the area. The guides will take you past Jane’s Carousel, the Freedom Tower, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, as well as Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

With Sea the City , you don’t need any prior jet skiing experience and you’ll be provided with everything you need for an enjoyable trip such as dry suits or wetsuits, gear for riding, and safety. You must be at least 18 years old to operate the jet ski and your second rider must be at least 12 years old.

Sea the City is located at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, New Jersey. We’re just across the Hudson River from Manhattan’s bustling financial district!

Parking is available on-site.

The easiest way to get to us is via the Liberty Landing Ferry. The ferry leaves Manhattan every hour on weekdays (weekend service may be suspended or different from its daily schedule … so please check with Liberty Landing Ferry directly) and arrives at our Marina in under 15 minutes. The ferry costs $10 per person each way and is a reliable and enjoyable way to reach us.

Board the Liberty Landing Ferry at Brookfield Place (close to the 9/11 Memorial) and you will reach the Liberty Landing Marina docks in mere minutes. Click here for the latest ferry info and schedule.

Take the PATH Train to Grove Street

From Manhattan, you can take the PATH train to the Grove Street Station in Jersey City. Once you exit the station, a 10-minute taxi ride will get you to our location.

Wow what a way to see NYC. We had such an amazing time jet skiing along the Hudson hitting speeds up to 50mph. Yes it was pretty scary at first but the guides were great keeping an eye on us. We went so far along the Hudson from New Jersey to Brooklyn bridge and around Statue of Liberty. The guides were great at taking photos - we got so many action shots, definitely get the photo package! Such a great experience and something so different to say you’ve done in NYC!

he hot tub boat around Manhattan was one of the most wonderful things I've done. I highly recommend for a special occasion. The water temperature is perfect to hang out in for 90 mins in the cold without it getting too hot to handle. You will be up close to the statue of liberty and right under the Brooklyn Bridge. It's definitely a NYC highlight and I hope to do it again some day!

This was an awesome experience!! We did this for our friends 40th Birthday celebration! Zoey was our host & she was nothing shy of amazing along with the rest of the staff..they had everything we thought we forgot & some. We went on a Friday around 3pm. “I’ve sailed with Sea the City on their Hot Tub boats twice now (both on private tours with both tubs reserved, up to 20 people total), and the staff has been kind, understanding, fun, and easy. The first time was in Spring 2021, and the second time was recently in Spring 2023. They are thorough when it comes to a brief and safety rundown at the beginning of the tour, and for the rest of the evening, are completely on top of service when it comes to making sure the coolers are full of drinks, picking up empties, taking group pictures, etc. On this most recent reservation, I had indicated that my group was celebrating a special event, which was the Eurovision Final happening the following day. The staff actually put “Eurovision 2023” on a rainbow light board and took our picture with it. It was so fun and everyone was so surprise in the best way possible.

By far one of the coolest experiences ever! Made extra amazing by the wonderful and attentive staff that truly went above and beyond. Zoe, Kelsey and Captain made my best friend’s bachelorette a truly memorable experience. Can’t recommend this tour enough!
