The Public History of Cemeteries

Cemeteries are community touchstones, walking tours.

A walking tour is probably the easiest way to provide historical context for your cemetery and the people buried there. The cost can be free — just an investment of time and effort — to a sizable investment, if you want to provide printed brochures or online mapping support.

There are two main types of walking tour: self-guided and guided. While self-explanatory, there are many ways to go about creating either kind of tour.

Guided Tours

The guided walking tour is an old classic, and is a great way to get people to visit your cemetery. Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon, offers a guided tour of the cemetery, every few weeks. These are $10 and usually attract about twenty people interested in attending, according to the Facebook events. If you have a really great volunteer, have them come up with the tour narrative. I would suggest having a central narrative that has a map of where to walk with the text of the gravestones to visit on the tour. However, the guides don’t need to follow this word for word. Provide a good framework and then let your volunteers do the rest. People will like the tours if the tour guides are knowledgeable and interested in the topic themselves. Enthusiasm shows and is contagious. While guided tours are the most personal way to tour a cemetery, not every place has the capacity to offer guided tours. That’s where self-guided tours come in.

Self Guided Tours

There are a lot of kinds of self-guided tours and technology is making it easier to create innovative kinds of ways for people to interact with your cemetery.

Printed Walking Tours

The traditional self-guided tour usually comes in the form of a brochure with a map and

places to stop marked out. Each stop has a short story of the person buried there. This is a great and relatively low-cost option. If you want to start with something small and practical, this option is great. Install a waterproof brochure holder at your site and refill the holder on a regular basis so people visiting have access to the brochure right when they walk up. The Linkville Pioneer Cemetery in Klamath Falls, Oregon, provides a brochure at their gate for visitors to the cemetery which includes a map, interesting monuments and people, and general information about the cemetery. This is a great example of what a printed walking tour could look like. Don’t forget to post this to your website as well so people can print it out on their own or explore the cemetery from home!

App Based Tours

One of the newer ways of offering tours for your visitors is an app-based tour. The Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta Georgia has an app you can download onto your preferred device. Included is an introductory narrative, list of features, and map function which lets you click on different features to learn more about them. The app is free, but for $2, you can upgrade to include more places of interest. This might be a great project to partner up with a nearby university that has a software developing program. This would also be a great grant project, as it’s a new and innovative way to interact with visitor. One really cool benefit is that people can explore the cemetery right from home. Even in Oregon, I was able to learn quite a bit about the Oakland Cemetery right from my computer table.

Google Maps (or other mapping tech)

Virtual Tours

There are many cemeteries who also offer virtual tours of their cemeteries online. Arlington Cemetery in Pennsylvania offers what is essentially a Google Streetview tour of the whole cemetery which you can click through. The Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia (along with segway tours!) offers a interactive map virtual tour where you can click through interesting places, while viewing photos and historical interpretation in the side panel. These options both require more technical knowhow than a printed or Google Map self-guided tour.

Remember that any of these options are only going to be as successful as you can make them. Don’t try to do a virtual tour if your team of staff or volunteers doesn’t have the capacity to do so. An old-fashioned, printed brochure can be a really great way to provide information to your visitors and encourage locals to come back out and see what’s going on at the local cemetery. Your cemetery and your community will know what is the best option for you!

Classic Daytime Tour

Soak up the beauty of this 175-year old cemetery while your guide regales you with stories of the fascinating people resting here in peace.

Our two-hour daytime walk is the perfect way "to have a colloquy among the tombs" as Washington Irving, famous author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", did himself back in 1849.

We pay homage to the great author, stop by some of the most interesting monuments in the old section before heading north to visit the final resting places of two-term Chicago Mayor Walter Gurnee, steel titan Andrew Carnegie, oilman William Rockefeller, two people vital to the success of Wells Fargo and American Express, and much more. Admire beautiful art, architecture and cool cemetery symbolism along the way.  This tour gives a great overview of why Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is so famous.

Please note that the Classic Daytime Tour is   the same route   as the Classic Evening Lantern tour. The content is exactly the same - it just starts in a different location.

Dates: Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. through September. October and November dates will be posted in early September.

Step back in time and explore the cemetery by kerosene lantern light! This two-hour evening tour gives you a great overview of why Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is so famous.

You’ll visit titans of industry like Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller, meet Washington Irving whose famous short story gave our village its very name, see the resting place of two-term Chicago Mayor Walter Gurnee, and learn about two people vital to the success of Wells Fargo and American Express, and much more. Along the way, admire beautiful art, architecture and cool cemetery symbolism.

Maybe you’d like to hear about a son who shot his father before turning the gun on himself, and a daughter who poisoned her mother? If so, then this is the tour for you!

Murder and Mayhem is back and better than ever with a new route - visit a few old favorites and leave with new ones! The truth is always stranger than fiction.

NEW! The Revival of the Cemetery as an Outdoor Sculpture Gallery (Golf Cart Tour)

The conceptual design of Victorian-era Rural garden-style Cemetery moved death from overcrowded burial grounds to a romanticized Victorian view of death, with landscaped grounds and beautiful marble statues which helped further the Victorian pursuit of self-directed learning. For many 19 th century Americans the monuments found in a garden cemetery were their first and perhaps only exposure to sculptural artwork.

The late 20 th century saw the reintroduction of sculptural artwork in cemeteries in the form of bronze sculptures and other sculptural works. Join us on an exploration of the monumental artwork of the “newer” section of Cave Hill Cemetery.

Discovering the Design of Cave Hill Cemetery: Benjamin Grove’s ‘Cave Hill’ Tour (Golf Cart Tour)

The design of a Victorian rural garden cemetery, like Cave Hill, is dependent upon the horticultural vision of a landscape architect working in tandem with a civil engineer to hardscape the cemetery, laying out the roadways, water features, and sections to optimize the characteristics of the natural setting. English-born civil engineer Benjamin Grove designed over 47 cemeteries in the Ohio Valley. In 1853, he designed Cave Hill Cemetery's first true marketing piece- a map of the Cemetery surrounded by drawings of monuments and mausoleums of leading families of the time. Join Docent Nonnie Riney and discover whose burial locations were selected and what these monuments and mausoleums look like today.

2023 Lecture Series

Lecture: the journey to women's suffrage with kathryn west, ph.d..

Saturday, June 3, 2023 10 a.m. Lecture: Episcopal Church of the Advent, 901 Baxter Avenue, Louisville, KY Please park inside the Baxter Avenue gate of Cave Hill Cemetery and walk across to the church (Upper Room)

Women's Suffrage in the United States was achieved through the convergence of many varied and winding paths. Before the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, many women could vote, but by 1807 that right had been abolished in all states. In those early years of the 1800s, it was not considered appropriate for women to speak in public, and married women could not own property nor did they have rights to their wages if they worked, yet women were also believed to be the moral center of family life. This position led them to advocate for Abolition, Temperance, Dress Reform, Prison Reform, Property Rights, Free Love and Free Thinking, and Spiritualism, among others. Even the 1890s Bicycle Craze played a role! From Seneca Falls to the adoption of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920, just 102 years ago, this presentation highlights how women came to voice, learned to organize, and eventually achieved Women's Suffrage (they called it Woman Suffrage) though decades of work and many, many intersecting movements, organizations, and events. Featured are a number of women who "rocked the vote" even before they could vote, such as, of course, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Alice Paul, but also Victoria Woodhull, Ida B. Wells, Lucy Stone, and Kentucky's own Laura Clay.

After the lecture, enjoy a brief tour of some of the Suffrage leaders in Cave Hill Cemetery with our Docents

Lecture: Flower Power: Establishing Pollinator Habitats with Tammy Horn Potter, Ph.D.

Saturday, June 17, 2023 10 a.m. Lecture: Episcopal Church of the Advent, 901 Baxter Avenue, Louisville, KY Please park inside the Baxter Avenue gate of Cave Hill Cemetery and walk across to the church (Upper Room)

Pollinators are in peril due to a variety of reasons, but one of the easiest to address landscape diversity. Having traveled around the world interviewing beekeepers and honey producers, Tammy Horn Potter includes intriguing slides of pollen grains from nectar-producing plants of some of the world's favorite honeys, as well as photos and recommendations of local flora. Pollen is considered the "life-giving dust" to many pollinators, and this presentation focuses on the complexities of pollen grains, their beauty, and also the relative ease that many people can employ to diversity their surroundings with flowers that are beneficial.

Make Your Cemetery Come to Life with Public Tours

Guide families through your cemetery's beauty.

Written by Linda Jankowski

cemetery walking tours near me

When I think of a cemetery tour, I think of celebrities. Although a celebrity tour can be a wonderful draw to your cemetery, it is only the tip of the iceberg. Let’s discuss the numerous types of tours you can have and how you can present them to the public. Every cemetery in every community has a story to tell, and today’s technology helps you connect your cemetery and these stories with a much broader community.

The webCemeteries Virtual Tours and Mobile App allow you to quickly publish your tours for online and in-person visitors with photos, videos and stories that you want to share. New tours can be set up in minutes, and our account management team provides strategies for publicizing this content. So, what content should you share?

Tours in nature open up your cemetery to be viewed by the public. Cemeteries are public places, why not provide the visitor with a means to enjoy all of the history and beauty that resides in a cemetery. Tours open up opportunities for future sales, conversation and sharing.

If it is the activity you are looking for, then cemetery tours are the way to go. You will bring college students in for art studies and monument rubbings, birdwatchers admiring birds in their natural habitat, and historians will come by the droves to find their most notable burial targets. Cemeteries are not just for the dead. Cemeteries serve the dead, but they are destinations for the living. The cemetery itself leaves behind a legacy of lives, stories, art and beauty to be shared by all who enter.

Types of Tours

Trees and cemeteries are synonymous with each other. Where there is a cemetery, there are trees. Trees and foliage not only bring birds, but they bring people that like birds and horticulture. The birding community is large and they will travel where the birds go.

Some cemeteries have become arboretums which sets the cemetery on a very different path of notoriety. If your goal is to gain arboretum status, start here to begin that process. Some state and federal funds are available to become an arboretum. This kills two birds with one stone (sorry, had to do it); you not only become a member of a large collaboration of beautiful bird watching destinations, but you could gain funding to manage it. Tree tours bring foot traffic, which also brings added pre-need and at-need sales for those who wish to be buried in your beautiful destination.

You can manage it all with webCemeteries!

General Tours

Tours centered around notable people is another popular draw. Your cemetery may or may not serve families of national notoriety or household names, but every cemetery has people who are significant to their local community and who have interesting stories to be shared. Notable people within your cemetery usually consist of:

  • Military figures – this topic alone can be broken down into several different tours focused on conflict, commendations, branch, rank, men or women.
  • Points of Interest – this tour can take your mind to all areas of your cemetery. Water features, statuary, meandering paths or places of contemplation.
  • Monument or memorial – these tours interest historians of all ages and can inspire local schools to offer history projects centered around your cemetery.
  • Government notables – shine the spotlight on your town and allow the public to appreciate the work done by their civil servants.
  • Celebrity and notables – although the term celebrity tends to make us think of movie stars, a survivor of the Titanic, war hero, or town founder is a star in my book. People will travel from afar to see the burial location of a celebrity or a notable.
  • Everyday stories – every life has a story to tell, and if you or an intern from a local college is able to put in the time you can uncover a trove of interesting stories from everyday people in your cemetery by searching the obituaries in the library archives.

Paid, Donation or Docent Led Tours

These tours are especially popular for cemeteries that enthusiastically embrace tours as a way of sharing history and gaining new business for the future. West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, PA ( www.westlaurelhill.com ) has a Beer Baron Tour that allows people to visit and appreciate the original manufacturers of their favorite brew. This tour has been offered in the past as a paid tour where the individuals attending are bussed in and fed while visiting each grave space and receiving a glass of complimentary beer. Getting creative will create a positive outlook for your cemetery for years to come.

Some cemeteries provide volunteer or docent-led tours. These tours are extremely popular with people of all ages. Having an individual that appreciates and shares historic features of your cemetery with the public will provide a new appreciation for cemeteries and their meaning.

Scavenger Hunts

During special events or school trips, your cemetery can host scavenger hunts for famous people, notable landmarks or activity and work stations throughout the cemetery. Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, NC ( www.historicoakwoodcemetery.org ) has regularly hosted scavenger hunts and games at the cemetery to bring people together in a creative way to competitively or collaboratively hunt the history in the cemetery.

Every cemetery in every community has a story to tell, and today’s technology helps you connect your cemetery and these stories with a much broader community.

Getting The Word Out

Publishing tours is easier than you think. Most local historians already know the notables that reside in your cemetery. You start with one tour and move on from there. Having a tool that allows you to share this information is key to providing tour access to your community. Follow these simple steps and you will be well on your way!

  • Provide a well made website . Today, especially since the pandemic, our websites have become our primary storefronts. We spend years providing a beautiful, physical entry to our cemetery. Let’s create a beautiful website that provides a virtual entry to our cemetery. Choose a well-known website designer that specializes in cemetery website design and can provide you with many references. Consider an ADA compliant website to comply with state laws and to aid those in your community that are deaf or blind that would like to enjoy visiting your website.
  • Tours can be taken right from home; while navigating through your website from landmark to landmark.
  • Tours can be self-led, walking or driving, using navigation technology.
  • Tours can be offered by a volunteer or employee. These tours often include a donation link or reservation.
  • Get publicity. Once you have published your tours on your website or through your mobile app , issue a press release! We often see our customers in the evening news or the newspaper after bringing their community’s history to life in this way. You can even increase your news coverage by launching new tours throughout the year. Your webCemeteries account manager can provide you with our templated press releases and marketing flyers for promoting your new tours.

As the custodian of your community’s history, your cemetery has a lot to offer the public by way of tours and programming. The increased exposure that you can receive from publishing virtual tours online will connect you with a broader audience and help to increase the revenue of your firm.

What are cemeterians saying about webCemeteries?

This [website] project was quite an odyssey with plenty of twists and turns. The webCemeteries website design team weathered the storm. I think it’s more than fair to say that without their efforts, we would not have gotten this over the finish line…and with such an excellent outcome.

Cemetery Walking Tour

Cemetery Walking Tour

In anticipation of the 30th annual Tale of the Tombstones dramatic walking tours of Forest Home Cemetery on October 17, The Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest has planned special walking tours west of the Des Plaines River, in a part of the cemetery that has never been visited during the regular October tours that leave from the main gate on Desplaines Avenue.

Join Oak Park River Forest Museum docents for a walking tour to learn more about the people, organizations and stories found west of the Des Plaines River. Find out about the Bill Posters Union and the Cigar Makers International Union, veterans’ and fraternal groups, ethnic areas, the founder of the world’s first blood bank, a well-known radio personality, and more. NOTE—this is a walking tour only, not a character tour like our October Cemetery Walk.

The summer tours meet inside the First Avenue gate of the cemetery at 1 p.m. and will last approximately 90 minutes. Masks are required for those who have not received the COVID-19 vaccine. For those vaccinated, masks will not be required during the outside tour. Please bring your own water if needed. No refunds will be given for reservations cancelled less than 24 hours prior to the event.

Tickets are $10 each or $8 for members, and spaces are limited.  Click here to purchase tickets in our online store  or contact the museum at 708-848-6755.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Restrooms and water fountains will NOT be available at the cemetery, and the cemetery bridge over the Des Plaines River is currently closed. Enter Forest Home Cemetery at the First Avenue entrance, which is immediately north of Proviso Math and Science Academy. Beyond the garden mausoleums on the right is a large, open area. We suggest parking around there. Tour will begin at the first intersection east of the entrance.
