Madrid City Tour
Like most major cities, Madrid has an official Hop On Hop Off bus with two routes that stop at the city’s most important landmarks.
Madrid City Tour has a fleet of open-top double-decker buses to experience the best panoramic views of the city, while a guide offers interesting information on Madrid throughout the trip. Your ticket also allows you to get on and off the sightseeing bus as many times as you like.
Madrid City Tour offers two routes : Historical Madrid and Modern Madrid . If you choose to do both routes, you'll get a general idea of Spain’s capital city.
The first route (Historical Madrid) takes you to the heart of the city and stops at every emblematic landmark like Puerta de Alcalá , Puerta del Sol , the Royal Palace , the beautiful Temple of Debod and the legendary Gran Vía . The second route covers the most modern parts of Madrid, for example, The Santiago Bernabéu , the elegant Calle Serrano , Nuevos Ministerios and the bullfighting ring in Ventas .
Running times and frequency
- November to February: from 10 am – 6 pm (a tour bus leaves every 14 to 15 minutes).
- March to October: from 9 am – 10 pm (a tour bus leaves every 8 or 9 minutes).

How does the hop-on hop-off Madrid bus work?
If you are already familiar with open top bus tours, also know as hop on-hop off, the available services in Madrid are pretty much identical as to what you could find in other city across the world.
Nevertheless, if you haven’t heard of theses buses or have taken one of them, here is how they work:
- Companies operate one or several routes that include the city’s most important highlights.
- Each route has a certain number of stops where you can hop on and off the bus. These stops are not always located in the same spot as public transport buses are.
- You generally catch a double deck bus. These buses offer an audio guide service as well, available in several languages, providing comprehensive comments on the highlight you are visiting.
- You get a ticket and pay a fixed price.
- The ticket entitles you to unlimited trips in every route of the company’s buses for a limited period of time – usually 24 or 48 hours.
- You can hop on and off the bus as many times as you’d like provided that your ticket is still valid.
- The tourist buses have a limited frequency and chances are you may have to wait between 30 minutes and one hour before the next bus stops where you are.
Is it worth to catch the hop-on hop-off Madrid bus?
Here are some valid reasons that support the idea of catching a bus to visit a city.
1. An open top bus tour is an interesting idea if you are going to spend little time in town. For example, if you land in Madrid as a first stop before heading south on a road trip around Andalucía. The tourist bus allows you to have a sneak peek of Madrid.
2. If you are going to spend a few days in the city, you might take one of these buses on your first day to have a complete summary of what’s worth visiting. Then, in the following days you can spend time going to the places that interest you more.
3. A double deck bus offers a new perspective compared to what you can see on a walk.
4. It’s worth considering if you’d like to take advantage of the bus route and easily reach far away sights.
On the contrary, you shouldn’t go on a city sightseeing bus if you:
- Like to visit places at your own pace and do not advocate rally-tourism.
- Intend to a have a relaxed visit of several monuments or museums in one day. Since these buses are not very frequent, you risk wasting a precious time while waiting for the bus to come. Use any other public means of transportation instead.
- Think about using the tourist bus as a replacement for an unlimited transport pass, such as the Madrid Tourist Travel Pass . It’s not a good idea. A tourist bus ticket is far more expensive than the pass mentioned before or even a Metrobús . Madrid has an excellent public transportation with an extensive subway and bus network.
Madrid City Tour (red buses)
The company operates 2 routes:
- The blue one covering the oldest part of the city (21 stops), and
- The green one, where you get to see the most modern areas (16 stops).
Both of them can also be extended routes (2 departures per day) and there is also a night route (only available from June 16 to September 15).
Your tickets are valid for 24 or 48 hours from the first time you use it, and you only need to wait for 15 minutes at every stop for a bus to come.
Get now your Madrid City Tour hop-on hop-off tour tickets »
Madrid Tourist Bus (yellow buses)
The company operates a single route covering highlights of both old and modern areas of Madrid.
However, this is not a regular hop-on hop-off service. Once you get on the bus you tour around the streets of Madrid for 1h30. During this time, the bus won’t stop and you are not allowed to leave the vehicle.
In my opinion, this is a much less interesting option as you don’t have the freedom to stop as soon as you spot an interesting sight or area of the city. You’re forced to see the whole thing and then, come back on your own to explore it.

Summerizes the city’s high lights
For the first time in the city it is very recommended. Use both routes ti know what is in the city and go there by your self if you like it.
Took the bus tour during our stay in Madrid and really enjoyed the experience. Since we were at the first departing spot early, we were the first ones on the bus, therefore nabbing the best seats on the bus, which are the second floor up front, so I was able to film a lot of videos. We got caught with some traffic on the Plaza Mayor area but that’s the risk you take when you take a bus.

The Best Way to Hop From Sight to Sight
Loved this service….and, with Madrid’s traffic considered, it’s the best way to maneuver about the city and not worry about parking or traffic. There are two routes, both worthwhile. The narration is good, the buses are in good condition and comfortable enough.

Czech man dies after falling into sea while taking photos of huge waves in Spain’s Canary Islands

MADRID (AP) — A Czech tourist died after falling into the sea while apparently taking photographs of huge waves during a storm on the Canary Island of Tenerife, authorities said Thursday.
A Canary Island local government statement said the 53-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon in the town of Puerto de la Cruz. Rescue services retrieved the man from the sea but he died shortly afterwards.
Authorities had warned of possible flooding in coastal areas due to stormy seas around the island in the Atlantic, a popular vacation destination for many Europeans. The government had urged people to take precaution in dock or breakwater areas and to avoid coastal roads and nautical sports.
Tenerife officials said people from some 60 houses were evacuated Wednesday, adding that waves reached some five meters (16 feet) in several areas.
Four people from different countries died last month after falling into the sea during bad weather on mainland Spain.
