Norwegian Fjords & Iceland

The majestic Norwegian fjords are iconic symbols of the beauty of traditional Norway. These are places where time moves in its own pace and there is no better way to take in the awe-inspiring beauty of this UNESCO-protected environment than from the deck of either a luxury cruise ship or a luxury expedition cruise ship.

Iceland is a country of extreme geological contrasts. Widely known as “The Land of Fire and Ice”, Iceland is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe and some of the world's most active volcanoes. It is also the land of light and darkness, long summer days with near 24 hours of sunshine are offset by short winter days with only a few hours of daylight.

The Norwegian fjords are just brimming with incredible contrasts and breath-taking stunning vistas. There are more than a thousand fjords in Norway, but most of the iconic ones - those you may have seen on the postcards, like the Nærøyfjord, the Sognefjord, the Lysefjord, and the Geirangerfjord - are located in the Fjord Norway region. The fjords resemble still blue lakes, but consist of saltwater - they are prolonged arms of the seas, often reaching deep inland with majestic cliffs towering above on both sides. Even though the fjords are often intertwined and you can sail from one fjord to another or back into the sea, visiting the fjords can make you feel like you are in a secluded universe. There are small villages spread throughout, and trails for both glacier walks and mountain hikes are plentiful.

The fjords feature pristine scenery and strikingly beautiful villages and they are tinselled with thousands of lazy waterfalls. Norway is also one of the best places to view the astonishing natural phenomenon that is the Northern Lights and other wonderful places to visit in Norway include Narvik, Bodo and the beautiful Lofoten Islands. We also love the breath-taking landscapes of Skjolden, the very quaint village of Nordfjordeid, Haugesund‘s Viking heritage and Kristiansund’s art nouveau Opera House.

Iceland is the youngest country in the world, Having been informed “only” about 25 million years ago. It is the second largest island in Europe after Great Britain. It's nearest neighbours are Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Scotland and Norway. Iceland is located very close to the Arctic Circle and half the land mass of some of the islands of the north coast of Iceland lie within the Arctic Circle.

With almost 80% of the country uninhabited, much of Iceland‘s terrain consists of plateau, mountain peaks and fertile lowlands. There are many long, deep fjords and glaciers, including Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull. The Icelandic landscape is characterised by waterfalls, geysers, volcanoes and otherworldly steaming lava fields.

Most luxury cruise visiting Iceland will call in to Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland. Reykjavík is Iceland's nucleus of culture and arts. By day, the café culture is supreme, but as the evening arrives people start filling the cities excellent restaurants, where local ingredients are served with fresh delicious lamb, seafood or wild game.

Reykjavík is a city of old contrasts: it is both cosmopolitan and small town; vibrant and sophisticated; young at heart and yet full of history. Other beautiful Ports of call often visited by luxury cruise ships in Iceland include include Akureyri, Isafjordur and Hrisey. Also, do not forget to visit the magical Blue Lagoon.

There is an exceptional array of luxury cruise and luxury expedition cruise opportunities that visit the Norwegian fjords and Iceland.

If you just wish to dip your toes in the water, there are many seven night Norwegian fjords cruises available throughout the spring and summer round-trip from Southampton. These are provided by Cunard and other luxury cruise lines. If you wish to view the aurora borealis, Northern Lights cruises mainly take place in February, March, October and November, usually round-trip from Southampton for 12 nights.

If you wish to experience a longer, more in depth Fjords cruise and include incredible Iceland into your itinerary, then there are a variety of 14 nights to over 30 night itineraries provided by most small ship luxury cruise lines. These will often commence or finish in Dover, Southampton, Greenwich or Tower Bridge. However, a flight to or from the UK is often required at the other end of your cruise, but a few, longer roundtrip UK options are available.

Iceland can also be visited round-trip UK as a main destination with the Norwegian Fjords as a secondary destination. These cruises are normally of 14 nights duration or longer and often include ports of call in the Faroe Islands, the Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands.

Exploring the fjord landscapes

Also in Olden, take the opportunity to enjoy a thrilling RIB boat ride to catch your own crayfish, or enjoy bird-watching on a more sedate boat cruise from Alesund to go in search of puffins, kittiwakes and razorbills. Alesund is also home to Mount Aksla, where the views from the peak over the Sunnmøre Alps are breath-taking. Modern engineering and ancient landscapes

Norwegians had to be inventive when it came to scaling the landscapes of the fjords, and so the Troll's Path - Trollstigen - was devised. This marvel of road engineering cuts a winding path between Åndalsnes and Valldal, through unforgiving mountains with hairpin bends and stunning views over sheer steep cliffs. Meanwhile, take the Rauma Railway through scenic valleys and mountains, such as the Trollveggen cliff and the Romsdalen valley, or enjoy a ride on the Loen Skylift in Olden to the peak of Mount Hoven, where you'll discover perfect hiking trails and breathtaking panoramic views of the Nordfjord countryside, before journeying on to the emerald green waters of Lovatnet Lake.

Briksdal Glacier Hike With a Local Expert

This special tour affords you the opportunity to accompany a local expert graduate in geomorphology, who has worked as a glacier guide at the site, on a visit to view this famous glacier arm.

Lovatnet Lake Cruise with Loen Skylift

Travel to Loen to enjoy a peaceful cruise on the waters of Lovatnet Lake. Take in the views of Ravnefjellet, as your vessel makes its way to Sande. Drive to the cable car base station. Take an approximate eight-minute cable car ride to the top of Mount Hoven. Enjoy refreshments before taking the cable car back down.

Rauma Railway

Journey through the Romsdalen Valley on the Rauma Railway, admiring towering mountains, plummeting waterfalls and sights such as the Kylingbru Bridge, Trollveggen Cliff and the emerald green Rauma River.

Trollstigen & Trollveggen

Head into the majestic Romsdal Mountains to view one of the most difficult rock climbs in the world - Trollveggen, before zigzagging up to viewing platforms perched high in the mountains to hover 200m above the Trollstigen Road.

Hjørundfjord Cruise

The Hjørundfjord cuts through some of the wildest mountain ranges in Norway, known as the Sunnmøre Alps. From the comfort of a vintage boat, admire views of mountains and fjords at their most spectacular.

Hike to Mount Aksla

Embark on a hike to Mount Aksla for stunning views of Ålesund's archipelago, town center, and the Sunnmøre Alps. Start from the quayside, passing through town to reach the hiking path. Pause at the Rundskue Lookout Tower, then rest at Fjellstua Viewpoint, admiring Ålesund's Art Nouveau architecture before descending.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel with a 57-year history of breaking boundaries, launched its 2024 Europe travel season on April 19, 2024 with the arrival of Norwegian Epic to its seasonal homeport of Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy, before embarking on a 10-day Greek Isles and Italy voyage.

During this summer travel season, guests embarking on NCL cruises in Europe will have the opportunity to choose from 101 distinctive itineraries with 38 roundtrips and 63 open-jaw sailings, calling to 140 captivating ports across Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, and the Atlantic Coast.  Additionally, guests can fully explore highlight destinations such as Istanbul, Turkey; Florence (Livorno), Italy and Reykjavik, Iceland with select itineraries offering overnight calls. Cruises will be departing from 13 homeports with New York City; Le Havre (Paris), France; and Oslo, Norway being three brand new options for NCL voyages to Europe.  The Company will have a total of nine ships 1 in region, including its newest innovative vessels, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva , as well as Norwegian Escape , which returns to Europe following its first successful season in 2022.

With an average of 10 hours in port, guests can explore at their leisure or choose from a wide range of shore excursions designed to provide guests with an in-depth experience of each destination. For more immersive experiences, NCL offers a unique collection of shore excursions including, Beyond Blueprints, where guests uncover the design secrets and stories of Europe's most iconic architectural landmarks; Gourmet Tours, designed for the foodie-driven traveler allowing them to go behind the scenes of local cuisines; and Go Local, a selection of excursions inviting guests to unveil the everyday rhythms and customs of life in destinations. Itinerary highlights for NCL cruises in Europe include:

Norwegian Star Sails a Series of Open-Jaw Sailings to Iceland, Greenland and Canada

Norwegian Star, the only ship in NCL's award-winning fleet equipped for polar navigation, which makes it possible for it to reach ports above the Arctic Circle.  As such, the ship will be the first in the NCL fleet to offer a new summer series of breath-taking and port-rich 12- to 14-day open-jaw sailings between New York City and Reykjavik, Iceland with calls to Akureyri and Grundarfjordur, Iceland; Qaqortoq, Greenland; and St. John's (Newfoundland) and Halifax, Canada. These itineraries will embark in July and August 2024.

Explore the Blue and White Greek Isles with Norwegian Getaway

Norwegian Getaway will homeport in Athens (Piraeus), Greece on June 25 embarking on seven- to 10-day Greek Isles roundtrip itineraries . Each day, the ship will moor at a new port allowing guests to explore bucket-list destinations like Istanbul, Turkey; Iraklion, Santorini and Mykonos, Greece as well as hidden gem Izmir (Ephesus), Turkey. Select departures include overnight stays in Istanbul giving guests more than 24 hours to visit Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar.

Norwegian Viva’s Cruises to the Mediterranean

Between May and November 2024, NCL's newest ship, Norwegian Viva, offers guests a selection of nine, 10- and 11-day open-jaw voyages cruising the Mediterranean. These unique itineraries feature a different embarkation and disembarkation port in sought-after destinations such as Athens (Piraeus), Greece; Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy, allowing travelers the opportunity to plan an extended vacation either pre- or post-cruise. 

Almost No Days at Sea Onboard Norwegian Escape’s Mediterranean Sailings

Norwegian Escape will be the Company's largest vessel in Europe this season at nearly 165,000 gross tons. The ship will homeport in Barcelona, Spain; Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy; and Trieste (Venice), Italy sailing eight- to 10-day roundtrip sailings in the Western Mediterranean calling to a sun-kissed port each day as well as seven- to 11-day open-jaw sailings with stints in Italy, Greece and France with only one day at sea.

Additionally, NCL cruises in Europe are already on sale through December 2025 giving guests the chance to plan and book their next summer getaway early.

Iceland introduces UK tourist 'cap' and will limit number of visitors

A popular destination has introduced a strict daily cruise passenger limit in a blow for UK tourists heading abroad . Iceland has become a go-to for British holidaymakers and tourists who want to head abroad to the nation to see the Northern Lights.

But Isafjordur, a town in Iceland’s northwest Westfjords region, said it expects to see 255,000 cruise passengers a year but has introduced some limits. Under a new cruise policy, the town will limit the number of visitors who can travel each day and will be capped at 5,000 passengers.

Gylfi Ólafsson, chair of Isafjordur’s municipal council, said: “The most significant change in this policy is that we set a limit on the number of passengers we can accommodate each day. If the tourism industry continues to enhance its infrastructure by purchasing more buses, improving services, and doing better for the people, ensuring there are restrooms and that services are open and available, then we can accommodate more guests with ease.”

Responding to the cap, a Brit said: "Quite right. Thousands descend on places as multiple ships dock at the same time. No good for tourists or locals (except the ones selling tat). Norway are also stopping ships entering fjords later this year."

The town will also ban the tradition of blowing the horn when arriving or leaving the port in the Westfjords region of northwest Iceland. According to a spokesperson for the town council, the new policy will safeguard the long-term relationship between locals and the cruise industry.

Isafjordur is the third largest cruise ship port in Iceland, closely trailing behind Akureyri and Reykjavík in terms of size and capacity. The cruise season in Iceland runs from the end of winter in April, until the start of winter in September.

195 cruise ships are expected to visit Isafjordur this year with a maximum of 255,000 passengers.
