Order a variety of dishes to share with your friends so that you can all sample a range of tasty treats and authentic Chinese food alongside Malay and Indian cuisine. #2 – Raffles Hotel – One of the most romantic places to visit in Singapore!

Raffles Hotel

  • Colonial vibes
  • Old-world elegant atmosphere
  • Home of the Singapore Sling cocktail
  • Iconic building

Why it’s awesome: Named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of colonial-era Singapore, visiting this historic location is a throwback to a long-ago time when the British aristocracy wined and dined here. This hotel is possibly the most famous hotel in the city, well, it was before that ‘other one’ was built over at the areas. But here that one is all about modernity, here it’s all about history. That history dates back to the early 1830s when it was a beach hut, the hotel as we know it was founded here in 1887! That’s not the only history here, it’s the place the Singapore Sling was invented too!

What to do there: Well, of course, if you’ve got the cash you could splash out for one of the super expensive rooms and fully indulge in the grandeur of this colonial palace. But I suspect if you’re a fellow broke backpacker then you’re probably going to be relegated back to a hostel! Never fear though, because you don’t have to be an overnight guest to indulge in a piece of Singapore’s history. Pull up a stool at the bar and sample the original Singapore Sling for yourself! Ok, it’s not the cheapest bevvie you’ll ever have, but it’s probably the fanciest!

The Merlion is a symbol of Singapore, designed with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. It represents Singapore’s early beginnings as a fishing village and the original name of Singapora (Lion City). The tall statue sprays water from its mouth, taking pride of place in the leafy park. There’s also a smaller Merlion statue within the park, known as the Merlion Cub. There’s no charge to visit the park and see the famous statues which is perfect for travellers worried about the expenses in Singapore .

What to do there: Take lots of pictures of the Merlion and smaller Merlion Cub and admire the views of the river, the nearby skyscrapers towering over the park, and the even closer colonial architectural gem of One Fullerton Hotel. Cross the Esplanade Bridge for even more great views and find a quiet spot in the park to sit for a while in peaceful contemplation. While you’ll spot the Merlion symbol on many things, from promotional materials to souvenirs, there are a further six official Merlion statues around the country if you want to spot even more depictions of the emblematic mythical creatures.

#9 – Pulau Ubin – A must visit place to visit in Singapore on the weekend!

Pulau Ubin

  • One of Singapore’s last places to immerse yourself in rural life
  • Laid-back vibe
  • One of Singapore’s National Parks
  • Lots of native flora and fauna
  • Interesting local legends

Why it’s awesome: The island of Pulau Ubin, which means Granite Island, is said to have been created when an elephant, pig, and frog challenged each other to race across the water. Those that failed the challenge would turn to stone. All met with difficulties and were thus turned into stone. In the past, the island had several major quarries. Today, just a few residents remain on the island, living a way of life much different to that on the main island. Indeed, Pulau Ubin is often said to be one of the few places in Singapore where kampong life still truly prevails. Free from urban development, homes are fairly simple. The island is also known for its array of flora and fauna and is an especially great place for bird watching.

What to do there: Cross to the island by bumboat and rent a bicycle to leisurely explore Pulau Ubin, cycling past traditional wooden homes and jetties, an area that is rich with wildlife, mangroves, green plantations, and abandoned quarries. Feeling more active? Follow the diverse terrain along the mountain biking trail in Ketam Mountain Bike Park. Soak up the relaxed atmosphere and look out for creatures like majestic hornbills, wild boars, and various other birds, small mammals, and small reptiles. Walk along the boardwalk at Chek Jawa, a place known for its rich eco-diversity.

#10 – Haw Par Villa – A beautiful & colourful place in Singapore!

Haw Par Villa

  • Unusual religious-themed attraction park
  • Fascinating peek into Chinese mythology
  • Discover the Courts of Hell
  • Created by the inventors of Tiger Balm!

Why it’s awesome: Haw Par Villa is one of Singapore’s more unusual attractions and yet it’s a place that sees relatively few tourists. There are large dioramas and hundreds of statues that show scenes from local lore and legends, history, and Chinese mythology. One of the most fascinating (and gruesome!) parts of the park is often the Courts of Hell where you can gain insights into what awaits people in hell for a range of misdeeds during their life. The religious-themed park was created by Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, two Burmese brothers who also created Tiger Balm. It aimed to teach traditional Chinese values and was opened to the public in the mid-1950s.

What to do there: Learn more about Chinese beliefs and local legends as you gaze at some 1,000 statues in all sizes and colours. Brave the grisly, eerie, and monstrous Ten Courts of Hell to find out what punishments are given for various earthly sins. See the memorial dedicated to the brothers’ parents and learn more about local beliefs and history from the large dioramas. Scenes include the Legend of the White Snake, Journey to the West, and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Why it’s awesome: Singapore’s eye-catching Sri Mariamman Temple is the country’s oldest Hindu temple. It’s also a National Monument that was established in 1827 by an Indian businessman and community leader. Initially a fairly simple wooden temple with a statue of the Mother Goddess, the temple grew and became more ornate over the years. Many of the striking details that you can see today were created by master craftspeople from India’s Tamil Nadu. The temple has an ornate and colourful entrance tower, known as a gopuram, many statues, and several shrines. It is an active place of worship and there is a serene spiritual air. The temple is also a major hub for the local community.

Statues of Lords Krishna and Murugan flank the towering beauty. Pass through the main door and ring the small bells as you enter the temple complex. Allow plenty of time to fully appreciate the site, paying your respects to the Goddess Mariamman at the main shrine before visiting the smaller shrines to Murugan, Rama, Ganesh, Shiva, and Durga. #12 – Fort Canning Park – One of Singapore’s coolest historical sites!

Fort Canning Park Singapore

  • Long history
  • Thought to be haunted
  • Believed to have been the centre of ancient Singapura
  • Diverse attractions and recreational activities

Why it’s awesome: Fort Canning Park sits on Fort Canning Hill, one of the highest points near the city centre.  Known as the Forbidden Hill in Malay, many people believe that the area was once at the heart of ancient Singapura and was the place where kings of old were buried. There have been settlements on the hill for a long time. In 1819, when the Singapore Treaty was signed, the hill was where the British flag was first raised. Sir Stamford Raffles had a home on the hill and he initiated the nation’s first botanical garden there too (though plans were later abandoned). A fortress was built on the hill in the 1860s, although little remains of the fort today. There are various attractions and activities around the hill, as well as the reservoir and park.

What to do there: See the remains of an old cemetery, complete with a Gothic archway and a number of old gravestones and monuments. The walls surrounding the site contain several tombstones too. You can also see what remains of the old fort, namely the gateway and two large cannons. An old bunker was used as a strategic military base by the British during World War II, later used by the Japanese after the British surrendered. Today you can explore the large underground network of passageways and rooms at the Battle Box. The Sally Port is a secret door and the Spice Garden is a pleasant place to relax. You can also unwind at Canning Green. Architectural highlights include pretty cupolas, Raffles House, and the sacred Keramat Iskandar Shah. Art lovers should add the Fort Canning Arts Centre to their travel list.

The district of Marina Bay is considered to be Singapore's tourism epicenter. Marina Bay houses some of the city's main points of interest as well as numerous opportunities for entertainment like the ArtScience Museum and The Float at Marina Bay (the world's largest floating stadium). You'll also find the Singapore Flyer , Gardens By the Bay and Merion Park , some of the city's best lookout spots overlooking the bay. Singapore Botanic Gardens Singapore Botanic Gardens free

For such a large city, you'll be shocked at the amount of parks that share space with the skyscrapers. And the Singapore Botanic Gardens is the epicenter of this natural, flowering splendor. Formerly an unused plantation, the garden hugs 60 acres of the city, not only living up to Singapore's nickname of the City in the Garden, but earning the country's first UNESCO World Heritage site title. The gardens attract both casual naturalists and scholarly botanists with its  world-renowned botanical library, acres of varied vegetation and free admission. Numerous attractions dot a map of the gardens; however, we advise that you simply wander through this gorgeous spectacle and unwind. That said: travelers say not to miss the National Orchid Garden for its innumerable floral varieties and breathtaking colors.

Overall, recent visitors were taken by the beauty of the floral grounds, with some saying it was the best attraction they visited during their time in Singapore. Due to the size of the gardens, many travelers suggested allotting hours to tour this attraction because there is just that much to see. Aside from hitting the main points of interests, some recommended taking a jog or packing a picnic as an alternative means of soaking up the attraction. However you decide to experience the gardens, travelers agreed: bring water. With average temperatures reaching the 80s, it's essential you have a bottle to stay hydrated.

Cloud Forest Cloud Forest

The climate-controlled dome that houses Gardens by the Bay’s Cloud Forest carves out a futuristic looking space along Singapore’s skyline. An indoor waterfall serves as the Cloud Forest’s primary attraction, cascading 30 meters (about 98 feet) down the human-made mountain. The Cloud Forest’s climate aims to replicate misty tropical mountains, which are cooler than the local area, so jets of vapor and spray from the waterfall work together to create the attraction’s namesake fog.

Recent visitors primarily praise the indoor waterfall, adding that the attraction offers a welcome respite from Singapore’s sweltering heat. Travelers also marveled at the plants, which vary from level to level; however, they also warn that parts of the higher levels may be triggering for those with a fear of heights.

Singapore's Chinatown Singapore's Chinatown free

As a nation composed of mostly immigrants, Singapore possesses a number of ethnic enclaves. Chinatown is one of the largest of them. Broken up into five districts, the neighborhood is packed with a variety of things to do and is constantly buzzing with pedestrians passing in and out of its shops, eateries and food stalls.

If you're seeking souvenirs, head over to Pagoda Street for trinkets galore, then consider grabbing a bite at Smith Street or New Bridge Road, the latter of which is known for its barbecued meats. For a night out on the town, venture on over to the Tangong Pagar district, which offers loads of bars, pubs and karaoke lounges. And when you need a break from the hustle and bustle, explore the Telok Ayer district. This area has the largest concentration of ancient mosques and temples in Chinatown. Set out to the Thian Hock Keng Temple for some quiet Zen. And though it's not associated with Chinese culture, you should stop in front of the Sri Mariamman Temple to admire its colorful, intricate facades.

Orchard Road Orchard Road free

Every modern metropolis must have its commercial avenue. Singapore's version is Orchard Road. This electric boulevard buzzes with  the whizzing of cars,  the humming of neon lights and  the swiping of credit cards, a far cry from the way things once were way back when. Orchard Road got its name from the presence of fruit orchards, nutmeg plantations and pepper farms that dotted the area in the early 19th century. Today, the mile-long street houses tons of eateries and a whopping 47 shopping malls carrying high end brands, popular international retailers like Zara and H&M as well as local shops. The massive  ION Orchard shopping complex is arguably the centerpiece of the street, so you'll inevitably be lured inside by the designer names and stream of fashionable patrons.

We definitely encourage window-shopping, but depending on your purchasing power, you should be wary of the enticing bright lights here. At various stores, the price tags range from reasonable to obscene, so we recommend saving your cash for unique souvenirs found in other character-filled neighborhoods like Little India and Chinatown . If you're still interested in getting a taste of this flashy thoroughfare, Orchard Road also houses art galleries, movie theaters, clubs and various other entertainment opportunities.

Merlion Park Merlion Park free

On Marina Bay , Merlion Park hosts one of Singapore's most recognizable monuments. The Merlion statue is the head of a lion with the body and tail of a fish, and the hybrid creature spouts water from its mouth and into the bay. Measuring 28 feet tall, the statue may seem a bit odd to the naked eye, but the statue is actually a nod to Singapore's history. The head of Merlion represents Singapura, the city's first name, which means 'lion city' in Malay. The fish tail and body symbolizes Singapore's old days as a small fishing town. Even though  the statue has claimed all the fame, another notable highlight is the park's panoramic view of the bay. Particularly at night, the urban vista with the spectacular Marina Bay Sands resort impresses visitors. Some travelers, however, complained of congestion and suggested visiting when the sun isn't at its peak.

Merlion Park is just a short walk from the Raffles Place MRT. The park is free to visit at any time of the day (though we recommend visiting at night). For more information, check out the Singapore Tourism Board's website .

Should you want to stray from the mainland, immerse yourself in Little India. Some travelers who are from or have visited India even went so far as to say that Little India made them feel as if they were in the country itself. But plan your time accordingly; Sundays are especially busy, according to reviewers.

Singapore Flyer Singapore Flyer

Ever since Chicago built one in 1893 for the World Expo, cities around the world have learned that tourists really like Ferris wheels – huge ones. In 2000, London built its famous Eye , standing 443 feet tall. But Singapore didn't wait long before constructing the Flyer, which trumps its British equivalent by almost a hundred feet. Since opening in 2008, the 42-storey-tall Flyer, billed as Asia's largest giant observation wheel, has offered visitors 360-degree views of the urban landscape from Marina Bay . The attraction claims that visitors can catch a glimpse of neighboring Malaysia or Indonesia from the highest point of the observation wheel.

Travelers label the Singapore Flyer as a must-do, with many saying the views atop the wheel are simply breathtaking. Visitors say the 30-minute ride time gives people ample time to take in the great views and snap lots of pictures. What's more, the pods are air-conditioned, making it a great place to also cool off from Singapore's year-round heat. Some suggested going at night to bare witness to the glittering city lights, or if you can, opt for a visit at dusk or sunset.

Recent visitors appreciated the opportunity to get some exercise in at East Coast Park. They recommended renting a bike to take advantage of the park’s winding trail, while inline skating is also an option. Be careful during the weekends, though, as the paved path gets exceptionally crowded, according to recent visitors. After burning off some calories, travelers recommended taking advantage of the nearby shopping center.

Recent travelers suggest getting a one-day unlimited rides pass, so that you can use the cable cars continuously from open to close.

In Singapore, a Culture of Service… and Surprises

By Tim Chan

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

What do we want when we go on vacation?

It’s one of the most difficult questions to answer, let alone something to plan for. But as the world begins to move again after almost two years of a global pandemic, the answer it seems, is we want to do it all .

In Singapore, you might just be able to.

One of the crown jewels of Asia, Singapore is just starting to come out of a Covid-related shutdown itself. The country was closed off to travelers for almost two years, with the government welcoming back vaccinated visitors in April 2022 before opening up its borders to everyone — regardless of vaccination status — in August.

And while Singapore’s reopening is a little later than other countries, the charming country of five million has a lot to offer in terms of culture and conveniences, in a friendly environment that’s the perfect way to ease back into travel .

After a long 19-hour flight from the U.S., the warm smiles and friendly smattering of “Singlish” were a perfect introduction to Singapore, which has long been known for its hospitality. But Singapore is also one of the most diverse countries you can visit today, with a multitude of ethnicities, languages and religious groups that come together in a rich mosaic of food, fashion, adventure and art.

Nowhere is that better represented that on Orchard Road, the heart of Singapore’s world-renowned shopping district. “Vietnamese and Indonesian families love shopping here,” my tour guide tells me, as he guides me into Tangs Plaza, a popular Chinese-themed department store modeled after the grand palaces in the Forbidden City.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The best place to start your shopping in Singapore though is at Design Orchard , a colorful modern bazaar of a space that’s like a gallery-meets-department store. Here, you’ll find exclusive goods from more than 100 home-grown designers, from popular Batik-print apparel — a signature of Singaporean design — to hand-poured candles, handmade jewelry and even pet accessories. The next generation of Singaporean artists are well-represented here too, with their work seen on everything from funky T-shirts and wallets, to avant-garde, genderless fashions.

Upstairs, find Alchemist at Design Orchard, a hidden coffee shop where you catch up with friends in the warehouse-style space or from the rooftop deck overlooking Orchard Road.

Back on the street, Orchard Road can be deceivingly quiet during the hotter months (note: the temperature in Singapore never dips below the 60s, so I suppose every month is a hot month to some). On a recent muggy September afternoon, the neighborhood was surprisingly devoid of pedestrians. “Where is everyone?” I asked my tour guide, who was in search of a beer for me to beat the heat.

How to Watch the Creighton vs. Oregon March Madness Game Without Cable

How to watch the nc state vs. oakland march madness game without cable, how to watch the unc vs. michigan state march madness game online.

Of course, you don’t want to spend your entire trip to Singapore underground. Two of the country’s most famous landmarks are above ground — and high above ground to boot.

The Gardens by the Bay is a nature park spanning 101 hectares and three waterfront gardens in the Central Region of Singapore. Here, you’ll find the popular Flower Dome botanical garden, the Supertree Observatory (the Gardens’ highest point) and the iconic Cloud Forest, home to one of the world’s tallest indoor waterfalls and a lush indoor mountain enveloped by plants from around the world. Everything seems designed for Instagram here, with fauna-fueled photo ops inside, and unobstructed views of the Singaporean skyline looking out towards the water.

A short drive away from the Gardens by the Bay is the world-famous Marina Bay Sands complex. Made famous by the film Crazy Rich Asians , MBS (as the locals call it) is comprised of three sprawling towers connected at the top by the SkyPark and its dazzling rooftop Infinity Pool.

Inside, MBS is like a Vegas-style complex, full of luxury boutiques, fine dining (we loved Daniel Boulud’s DB Bistro and Oyster Bar) and even a small casino. You could really spend an entire day at Marina Bay Sands, and on one of the rare rainy days we experienced in Singapore, we almost did!

Once the rain subsided, we ended the night at Clarke Quay, a vibrant and bustling nightlife hub located along the Singapore River. Old warehouses have been transformed into bars and clubs, and people of all ages come out to eat, drink, hop on a ferry ride. or take in one of the many nightly attractions by the Clarke Quay Fountain Square.

You’ll also want to make time to eat at Singapore’s famous hawker centers, a style of open-air food court with vendors cooking up everything from roti prata and laksa to the country’s famous Haianese chicken. We ate at Maxwell Food Center, though you really can’t go wrong with any hawker stand in town.

Buy Book: IHG Robertson Quay

Prefer a less hands-on dining experience? We loved Publico Ristorante, located inside the InterContinental Hotel at Robertson Quay. Also situated along the Singapore River, the restaurant brings a little slice of Italy to Singapore, with hand-made pastas, perfect appetizer bites, and warm, fluffy pizzas overflowing with fresh toppings and cheese. The cocktail menu is equally spectacular and you’ll want to save room for the inventive desserts too.

Though it measures just 31 miles East to West, Singapore is home to a surprising number of natural spaces where visitors can get away from the bustle of city life. One of these is the Railway Corridor, a 2.5-mile section of walking trail built over a former railroad track. It’s a great place to get a morning run in, or a leisurely afternoon stroll. The path takes you through some of Singapore’s lush tropical greenery as well as over bridges that once connected trains from Singapore to neighboring Malaysia and back.

And then there’s Sentosa Beach, a popular waterfront destination that gives a sort-of beach club-meets-amusement park vibe, with endless bars, live entertainment and dining options that run the gamut from DJ-driven wet decks to family-friendly restaurants. Of course, the strip of beach is super picturesque and you’ll want to dip your toes in the sand too.

Everything is on island time here, meaning drinks flow well into the night and the dancing seemingly never stops. For the adrenaline junkies, time also comes to a standstill in the racing simulators and indoor skydiving experiences, though they’re not for the faint of heart.

The race itself is a wonderful microcosm for Singapore, with fans young and old repping their favorite drivers and teams, while the stands are filled with a mix of faces and cultures, who have come from all across the world to take in the scene.

Biden Is Building a ‘Superstructure’ to Stop Trump From Stealing the Election

'the death of college sports will be fast and furious:' the scandal that could kill the ncaa, fergie chambers is heir to one of america’s richest families — and determined to see the u.s. fall, nicki minaj and husband ordered to pay $500,000 for alleged backstage assault in germany.

And it was true too, with the impeccable service I had experienced throughout my week in the city, and the pristine shops and streets as pretty as a postcard. Yet my favorite moments in Singapore were ones that were unplanned , and had nothing to do with perfectly-arranged photo ops or must-see attractions.

For me, the best part of visiting Singapore were the people: like the new friend at Design Orchard who directed me to a Chinese couple selling vintage-inspired band tees inside the nondescript Peninsula Center; her colleague, who invited me to a Devil Wears Prada screening followed by gay dancing inside a retro movie theater; the owners of Jigger & Pony, named the Best Bar in Asia , who took me to their award-winning bar for drinks, which led to introductions (and more drinks) with all the other award-winning bars in town; and my tour guide, who invited me to find him on Orchard Street on Friday night to watch him and his twin brother perform their street busking juggling act.

See, the thing that people often say they want on vacation, yet never really experience, is to live like a local . And Singapore, with its narrow alleyways of shophouses and fragrant hawker carts and hidden speakeasies and winding walking trails and mom-and-pop shops and knife-juggling buskers and gay dancing nights, offers exactly the kind of unpretentious yet unforgettable travel experience we all want. And that’s what makes it such a beautiful place to visit.

Sure the country has boomed in recent years, with a popular F1 race, the allure of Crazy Rich Asians , and scores of luxury buildings and shops, but the reason you’ll love Singapore is almost a little ironic if you think about post-pandemic travel: because even though you’re on vacation in Singapore, it doesn’t take long before you feel right at home.

This is the happiest country in Asia, according to the World Happiness Report

thumbnail

Singapore is the happiest country in Asia for the second year in a row, according to the 2024 World Happiness Report released Wednesday.

The city-state ranked 30 out of the 143 places surveyed for the study.

Topping the list this year is Finland, followed closely by Denmark and Iceland.

The World Happiness Report is a joint effort from some of the world's leading researchers and wellbeing scientists. The happiness ranking in this study is supported by data from the Gallup World Poll which measures individuals' average life evaluations, taken over three years from 2021 to 2023.

The top 10 happiness rankings in Asia:

  • South Korea
  • Philippines

Experts also analyzed data in six key factors: GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, generosity and perception of corruption. Their research into these areas provided deeper insight and potential explanations for the subjective quality of life ratings people gave.

"These factors help to explain the differences across nations, while the rankings themselves are based only on the answers people give when asked to rate their own lives," according to a statement by the World Happiness Report.

The data gathered for the six factors came from organizations like the World Bank , the World Health Organization and the Gallup World Poll.

"Singapore did very well in terms of GDP per capita, one of the highest ranking in our dataset," Shun Wang, co-author and editor of the 2024 World Happiness Report told CNBC Make It.

Singapore is also very good in terms of its perception of corruption... lowest among all countries in our data. Shun Wang Co-author and editor, 2024 World Happiness Report

"That means Singapore's government is really clean and their people really have a very low perception of corruption ... even lower, you know, than Denmark or Norway," Wang added.

Denmark and Norway ranked 2nd and 7th, respectively, on this year's report.

Additionally, Singapore "does particularly well on generating healthy life expectancy, so long lives and healthy lives," according to Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, Director of the Wellbeing Research Centre at Oxford University and editor of the 2024 World Happiness Report.

Despite this, Singapore ranks lower in terms of its perceived social support, freedom to make life choices, and generosity.

"Singapore is punching below its weight," said De Neve. "Given all the objective indicators about Singapore, you'd expect Singapore to be in the top 20 of the World Happiness Report."

"I would love to challenge the Singaporean government and the people of Singapore to find ways to leverage the extraordinary city-state that they've created into ways of improving quality of life as people experience it," De Neve said.

Why Finland and Denmark are the happiest countries in the world

In response to CNBC's request for comment, Singapore's government pointed to its latest  Budget statement , highlighting initiatives "aimed at supporting and uplifting Singaporeans from a wide spectrum of our society – from individuals to households and businesses — both in the immediate term and the future."

The measures include policies aimed at  reducing wage gaps and creating a stronger culture of  giving , said a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

Myanmar, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are among Asia's least happy countries, according to the report.

India, the world's most populous nation, came in at 126th out of 143 places surveyed.

The 5 Best Airlines For First Class In 2024

  • Airlines are still focusing on premium products, including first class.
  • Air France, Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, and Singapore Airlines have quality first class experiences.
  • However, All Nippon Airways could be the best first class experience to discover in 2024.

Despite airlines shying away from first class seating during the past few years, especially before the pandemic, there has been a resurgent focus on premium products in 2023 and 2024. Demand for first, business, and premium economy class seating has driven airlines to innovate and refresh their top-of-the-line products, with several carriers introducing new first class seats and suites.

If you were to look to tick off a few bucket list-worthy first class seats to fly on in 2024, several airlines have introduced or are planning to introduce new first class cabins during the year, indicating that the crème de la crème of airline seats is not going away anytime soon.

Air France’s La Première

Announced in: may 2022.

Aircraft available on:

  • Boeing 777-300ER

While the cabin is not available yet, Air France has promised that it will be during the upcoming winter season, which starts in October 2024. The carrier announced that it was redesigning its La Premiere cabin, exclusively deployed on its 777-300ERs, in May 2022.

At the time, Air France said that La Premiere would be the longest on the market, offering up to three modular configurations that can be fully privatized, including transforming the seat into a sofa or a bed. Furthermore, the carrier promised that it would appear on more aircraft than previously.

Benjamin Smith, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Air France, said that La Premiere represents the best of French excellence and is a vital part of the airline’s DNA. The executive noted that even at the peak of the pandemic, the airline saw the importance of a first class cabin, especially on routes across the Atlantic Ocean.

Lufthansa allegris, announced in: february 2023.

  • Airbus A350
  • Boeing 787-9
  • Boeing 777X

While Lufthansa teased the new designs of its first class cabins in October 2022, the German airline officially introduced the new Allegris cabins, including new first class seats, in February 2023. The seats will feature on Airbus A350, Boeing 787, and 777X aircraft, upon their delivery to the German airline.

At the time, Lufthansa said the new Allegris seats would be introduced with its latest Airbus A350-900 aircraft in 2024. However, two of its most recent Airbus A350-900 aircraft were straight sent to the desert, reportedly because supply chain issues derailed the airline’s plans to introduce the new cabins on the two aircraft, which is why they are now parked at Teruel Airport (TEV), Spain.

Why Lufthansa Has Flown Two Brand New Airbus A350s Straight To Storage

Nevertheless, while they might be delayed, the first class cabins will still have plenty on offer, including unprecedented privacy for the German airline’s top-of-the-line seats. For example, Lufthansa said that customers can warm or cool their seats in the suite according to their needs.

Lufthansa Pushes New Cabin Launch To 2024 Due To Delivery Delays

Etihad airways the residence, announced in: may 2014.

  • Airbus A380

While ‘The Residence’ is not a new product, the fact is that with the return of the airline’s Airbus A380 aircraft, passengers once again can enjoy ‘The Residence,’ an even more luxurious cabin than first class on the UAE-based Etihad Airways flights.

The one new development with the self-advertised three-room suite in the sky is that starting April 2024, the airline will deploy its Airbus A380 aircraft to fly between Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). When the aircraft returned to service in July 2023, the airline deployed it only on the AUH – London Heathrow Airport (LHR) route.

A380 Return: The Fleet Of Etihad Airways In 2024

Singapore airlines first class, announced in: july 2013.

While it has been more than a decade since Singapore Airlines first unveiled its newest first class product, the cabin still has been one of the top-rated cabins globally as the airline has managed to provide an unparalleled experience to its customers.

Unfortunately, the carrier’s Boeing 777-300ER only welcomes four first class passengers since its other long-haul aircraft, including the Airbus A350-900, A350-1000, A380, and Boeing 787-10, only have business class seats. The only exception is the Airbus A380, with the airline offering the ‘Suite’: a similar experience to Etihad Airways ‘The Residence.’ When Singapore Airlines announced the cabin in July 2013, it said that the seat would introduce a new industry benchmark for premium air travel, including redesigning its business and economy class seats.

5 Reasons Flying Singapore Airlines Is Worth It

All nippon airways the suite, announced in: july 2019.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced its new first class seats in July 2019 . The airline, which also publicized its newest business class seat on the same date, described the then-new suite as designed by combining Japanese heritage and Western design.

While Skytrax rated Singapore Airlines’ first class as the superior product in 2023, maybe ANA, whose first class was ranked as the third-best seat in the world, will have what it takes to take it to the next level. After all, Air Frances’s La Premiere, voted second-best, is getting a refresh, which could go either way and provide a potential opportunity for ANA.

The Japanese carrier offers its first class product on two aircraft, its iconic ‘Flying Turtles,’ the Airbus A380s, and the Boeing 777-300ER. When it introduced the new suites, ANA said that this was the most spacious fully enclosed seating ever seen on an ANA aircraft, adding that features include privacy-enhancing doors and a 43-inch monitor, which also showed entertainment in a 4K resolution.

World Bank Blogs

New World Bank country classifications by income level: 2022-2023

Nada hamadeh, catherine van rompaey, eric metreau, shwetha grace eapen.

Updated country income classifications  are available here.

The World Bank assigns the world’s economies [1] to four income groups—low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high income. The classifications are updated each year on July 1 and are based on the GNI per capita of the previous year (2021). GNI measures are expressed in United States dollars (USD), and are determined using conversion factors derived according to the  Atlas method .

Classifications can change for two reasons:

  • Changes to Atlas GNI per capita: In each country, factors such as economic growth, inflation, exchange rates, and population growth influence the level of Atlas GNI per capita. Revisions to improve national accounts estimates and methods can also have an impact. Updated data on Atlas GNI per capita for 2021 can be accessed  here .
  • Changes to classification thresholds: To keep income classification thresholds fixed in real terms, they are adjusted annually for inflation using the Special Drawing Rights (SDR) deflator ,  a weighted average of the GDP deflators of China, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Euro Area. The new thresholds for Atlas GNI per capita are as follows:

Table 1. New thresholds for Atlas GNI per capita

Changes in classifications

The tables below list the economies moving to a different classification group this year.

Economies moving to a higher income group

Table 2. Economies moving to a higher income group

The economy of Belize was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and moved to the lower-middle-income group. In 2021, economic growth rebounded, led by tourist-related activities and investments, bringing Belize back to its prior classification as an upper-middle-income country.

The economies of Panama and Romania were each also impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and moved to the upper-middle-income group. In 2021, both experienced a strong rebound, bringing them back to the high-income group.

Economies moving to a lower income group

Table 3. economies moving to a lower income group

For the eleventh consecutive year, Lebanon’s real GDP per capita fell in 2021, and the country also experienced sharp exchange rate depreciation. Therefore, Lebanon, an upper-middle-income country for almost 25 years, now moves to the lower-middle income group.

Palau’s economy has experienced a downward trend since 2016. Tourism and related industries have been severely impacted by the pandemic, and trade flows were disrupted. While Palau has been a high-income country since FY18, it will now move to the upper-middle-income group. [2]

While a rebound in the price of copper boosted Zambia’s GDP in 2021, a sharp deterioration in exchange rates led to a large decrease in Atlas GNI per capita expressed in US dollars, reclassifying the country to the low-income group.

It is to be noted that Venezuela, classified as an upper-middle income country until FY21, has been unclassified since then due to the unavailability of data.

More information

Detailed information on how the World Bank classifies countries is available  here . The  country and lending groups page  provides a complete list of economies classified by income, region, and World Bank lending status and includes links to prior years’ classifications. The classification tables include World Bank member countries, along with all other economies with populations greater than 30,000.

These classifications reflect the best available GNI figures for 2021, which may be revised as countries publish improved final estimates.

In countries where dual or multiple exchange rates are in use, the exchange rate used to convert local currency units to US$ is an average of these exchange rates, provided necessary data are available.

Data for GNI , GNI per capita , GDP , GDP PPP , and Population for 2021 are now available on the World Bank's Open Data Catalog. Note that these are preliminary estimates and may be revised. For more information, please contact us at [email protected] .

[1] The term country, used interchangeably with economy, does not imply political independence but refers to any territory for which authorities report separate social or economic statistics.

[2] Based on internal Bank estimates, pending publication of official data.
