Who is Currently Performing with The Eagles? An In-Depth Guide to the Legendary Band’s Current Lineup

Who is Currently Performing with The Eagles

The Eagles are undeniably one of the most iconic and best-selling bands in rock n‘ roll history. Since forming in Los Angeles in 1971, the band has crafted an extensive catalogue of timeless hits and created a legacy that cemented their status as musical legends. While the Eagles disbanded in 1980, they reunited in 1994 for the wildly successful Hell Freezes Over tour and have been actively touring and recording ever since.

However, in recent years the band suffered the tragic loss of two integral founding members – guitarist Glenn Frey passed away in 2016 and guitarist Bernie Leadon passed in 2021. Despite this, the surviving original members and talented new additions are determined to keep the Eagles‘ spirit alive by continuing to perform their catalog of classics to appreciative audiences around the world.

Let‘s take an in-depth look at the stellar cast of musicians currently flying the Eagles banner and keeping their musical legacy soaring.

Founding Members Still Anchor the Band

Founding Members Still Anchor the Band

The two remaining original continuous members providing a strong foundation in the current Eagles lineup are drummer and vocalist Don Henley and guitarist and vocalist Joe Walsh .

Henley, along with Glenn Frey, founded the band back in 1971 and for many fans is the distinctive voice that defines the Eagles sound. In addition to his immaculate drumming, Henley sang lead on hits like “One of These Nights”, “The Long Run” and “The Boys of Summer”. Walsh first joined the band in 1975 in time for their career-defining Hotel California album. His fierce guitar playing is all over Eagles classics like “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Pretty Maids All in a Row”.

Both Henley and Walsh also cultivated massively successful solo careers over the years in addition to their contributions as Eagles. However, they remain dedicated to the band that made them global superstars. According to Ultimate Classic Rock critic Dave Lifton, Henley and Walsh provide “both the musical foundation and institutional knowledge that helps the rest of this lineup excel.”

Vince Gill Adds New Dimensions to the Band

After Glenn Frey‘s tragic and unexpected passing in 2016, the band recruited acclaimed country musician Vince Gill to come in and try to fill the large void left by one of their primary vocalists and songwriters. While certainly a daunting task, Gill has excelled beyond expectations by bringing his own flair and style to the band‘s catalogue of hits.

In addition to being a highly skilled guitarist with his own distinctive tone, Gill is known for his pure, smooth tenor voice that melds perfectly with harmonic-rich Eagles songs. His country music pedigree combined with rock sensibilities have added exciting new facets to the band.

According to Don Henley, Gill has been “a perfect fit musically and personally” and his addition to the band has reinvigorated their live performances. Fans who were initially skeptical have fully embraced Gill‘s energy and vocal talents.

Deacon Frey Joins to Honor His Father

Deacon Frey Joins to Honor His Father

In 2017, Glenn Frey‘s son Deacon Frey also officially joined the Eagles lineup for live shows. Deacon had previously toured with the band alongside his father and was determined to help continue his dad‘s musical legacy. Still in his 20s, Deacon contributes his talents on vocals, guitar, piano, and mandolin during concerts and has been enthusiastically welcomed into the Eagles family.

According to Don Henley, “Deacon‘s energy and passion for this music is inspiring. The band loves him, and so do the fans.” Having Deacon join to take over his father‘s vocals adds even more emotion and heart to the band‘s performances. Deacon has more than lived up to his father‘s legacy, helping the Eagles soar to new heights.

Timothy B. Schmit Anchors Them on Bass since the 70s

Timothy B. Schmit Anchors

While not an original founding member, bassist and vocalist Timothy B. Schmit has been with the band since 1979 after replacing original bassist Randy Meisner. Schmit‘s crystal clear tenor voice and high harmonies have become a staple of the Eagles‘ trademark sound.

Schmit sang lead vocals on hit singles like “I Can‘t Tell You Why” and has been providing the steady rhythmic foundation on bass throughout the band‘s live concerts and studio recordings for over 40 years now. His musical chemistry with Henley, Walsh, Gill, and Deacon Frey is seamless and helps recreate that classic Eagles magic fans have loved for decades.

Key Stats on the Legendary Eagles:

  • 6 Grammy Awards Won
  • 150+ million albums sold worldwide
  • 5 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart
  • 240+ weeks total on the Billboard 200 album charts
  • $250+ million in concert grosses since reuniting in 1994
  • Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998

Hotel California 2022 Tour Electrifies Audiences

The current incarnation of the Eagles has been thrilling audiences on their Hotel California 2022 tour across North America. Their concerts see the band perform their entire iconic 1976 album Hotel California from start to finish before treating fans to a long set filled with other classics from their unparalleled catalog.

Reviews of the new lineup have been glowing, with critics and fans raving about the fresh energy and outstanding musicianship Gill and Deacon Frey have brought to the legendary band.

Here‘s a look at what each member brings to the table musically when the Eagles take the stage in 2022:

  • Don Henley – Lead vocals, drums, percussion
  • Joe Walsh – Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, keyboards, vocals
  • Vince Gill – Guitar, mandolin, vocals
  • Deacon Frey – Guitar, piano, vocals
  • Timothy B. Schmit – Bass guitar, vocals

It‘s evident that – even with the passing of key original members Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon – the Eagles‘ spirit and top-notch musicianship continues to thrive thanks to this stellar current lineup. The band sounds as tight as ever and their shows consistently garner rave reviews.

Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Deacon Frey, and Vince Gill all possess tremendous individual talent while also demonstrating an ensemble cohesion that allows them to soar through the Eagles catalog with ease. Their passion and commitment to honoring the Eagles‘ musical legacy is apparent through ever note they play.

For long-time fans or newcomers just discovering their music, the current Eagles lineup delivers a live concert experience that reminds the world why they are one of the most beloved and enduring American rock bands of all time.

What to know about The Eagles 2022 'Hotel California' tour

eagles band tour 2022 members

The Eagles' will return to Nashville this week when their "Hotel California" tour comes to Bridgestone Arena April 28-29. The band last performed at Bridgestone Arena in March 2018 for a two-night run.

Here are some things to know about the 2022 tour.

'Hotel California' from start to finish

The show will feature a start-to-finish performance of the beloved 1976 album that shares a name with the tour.  A full orchestra, led by Nashville music industry giant Jim Ed Norman , and a choir will join the band. Norman, also known for his work with Linda Ronstadt, Bob Seger, Randy Travis and others, got his start as an orchestral arranger for The Eagles in 1973 on the song "Desperado."

This will be his first time to ever tour with the band. For the "Hotel California" tour, Norman was recruited to update his classic arrangements and conduct the musicians on stage.

"Hotel California" features staple cuts such as "Life In The Fast Lane," "Victim Of Love" and, of course, the title track. After performing the album, the band will also play a set of their greatest non-'California' hits.

Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill continues to tour with the band , a position he adopted in 2017, roughly a year after co-founding member Glenn Frey died.

The Eagles tour in 2022 will include Gill joining Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh. Deacon Frey, Glenn's son, toured with The Eagles for more than four years following the death of his father in 2016, but it was recently announced he will not be on upcoming dates with the band.

"Deacon Frey has devoted the past 4½ years to carrying on his father’s legacy and, after some weeks of reflection, he now feels that it is time for him to forge his own path. We understand, completely, and we support him in whatever he wishes to pursue in the years ahead," a statement posted on The Eagles website says.

The  EAGLES ,  Don Henley ,  Joe Walsh  and  Timothy B. Schmit , with  Deacon Frey  and  Vince Gill , announce the band’s  “Hotel California” 2022 Tour , produced by Live Nation. Each concert features  “ Hotel California,” played from beginning to end, accompanied by an orchestra and choir, including a brief intermission followed by an additional set of the band’s greatest hits. The limited eight-date tour kicks off on Saturday, February 19, 2022, in Savannah, GA and includes a return visit to Orlando’s Amway Center on Thursday, February 24, 2022. Tickets go on sale Friday, December 3 at 10 a.m. ET.

A variety of tour pre-sales begin Thursday, December 2 at 10 a.m. ET. Additionally, a limited number of VIP packages are available and include premium seats, exclusive merchandise, parking and more. Visit  Eagles.com  for complete tour and ticket information.

The  Eagles  performed three initial “Hotel California” concerts in 2019 in Las Vegas to rave reviews and critical acclaim. To date, the band has performed more than 30 concerts across 15 U.S. cities.

“From the title track — a six and a half-minute flamenco-reggae ballad— to the elegiac closer ‘The Last Resort,’ it’s consummately performed . . . ” ~ Los Angeles Times

“The band performed the album from front to back, following with a blazing greatest hits set that had the audience at the sold-out arena constantly on its feet . . . With no exception, the songs have aged well, but how could they fail with the Eagles’ five-part harmony and five guitar-approach . . . (Henley’s) voice sounded as strong and pliant as it ever has, easily hitting the highest of notes while retaining his trademark huskiness.” ~ Billboard

“By now, the orchestra has been joined by a choir. The Eagles’ sound, with its glowing harmonies, barely needs them, but they add to the sense of occasion – and the delight of the crowd. I’ve never seen so many songs receive a standing ovation.” ~ Daily Mail

“Hotel California” is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It topped the charts after its release in 1976 and won two GRAMMY® Awards for “New Kid in Town” and “Hotel California.” Several of the album’s songs have never been performed since the original Hotel California tour. The band’s “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1977” is the best-selling U.S. album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times platinum.

In today’s faddish, fractured rock landscape, the  Eagles  retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons. As the best-selling American band of the ’70s and one of the top-selling acts of all time, the  Eagles  have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six number one albums and topped the singles charts five times. In their first year of eligibility, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, have won six GRAMMY® Awards and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

The Eagles – Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, with Deacon Frey and Vince Gill – have extended the Hotel California 2022 Tour with even more concert dates being added. Each show will feature the iconic Hotel California album played from beginning to end, accompanied by orchestra and choir, along with an additional set of the band’s greatest hits.

It is common knowledge that founding member Glenn Frey was among the first to incorporate Takamine Guitars' game-changing onboard electronics in live performance. Perhaps less known is that the Eagles choice of Takamine dates well before the 1979 introduction of the Palathetic pickup. The next time the iconic 12-string intro to the classic 1976 studio recording of "Hotel California" wafts your way, know that you are you are listening to a Takamine F385.

The Eagles bring their 'Hotel California' Tour to Des Moines and will play the entire album

eagles band tour 2022 members

When they arrive in Iowa it's hard to say if the Eagles will think "this could be heaven or this could be hell," but there should be plenty of room for fans of the band in Des Moines' Well Fargo Arena.

Classic rock band, the Eagles — famous for hits such as "Hotel California" and "Take It Easy" —  will expand the "Hotel California" Tour to include a stop in Des Moines at 8 p.m. on Nov. 17 at Wells Fargo Arena, 233 Center St.

The tour will include band members Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, with Vince Gill, who started touring with the band in 2017 after the death of the band's previous guitarist, Glenn Frey.

The band performs its "Hotel California" album in its entirety with a choir and orchestra. After an intermission, the band launches into some of its greatest hits. Previous concerts on this tour brought a 28-sing set that included “One of These Nights,” “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Witchy Woman,” “Take It to the Limit” and “Tequila Sunrise” with some Joe Walsh and James Gang songs thrown in for good measure.

The band previously performed Des Moines in 2018 and before that in 2014 .

Last month saw both one current collaborator and one past member of the Eagles stop in Iowa when  former lead guitarist Don Felder performed the Mason City stop on RAGBRAI  and country artist Vince Gill played the Des Moines Civic Center  less than a week before that.

“I think for me, I don’t sing it, but getting to be a part of 'Desperado' is pretty powerful," Gill told the Des Moines Register in July about his favorite Eagles songs to perform. "That’s the very first song that Glenn and Don (Henley) wrote together.”

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Aug. 19 for the Wells Fargo event and can be found through  hy-veetix.com  and livenation.com .

Eagles’ Long Goodbye Is the Best Farewell Tour You’ll See This Year: Review

Eagles ' Long Goodbye tour might be the least quintessentially rock 'n' roll farewell trek on the market right now. It might also be the best.

It's not often you see a message on the screen before an arena rock show asking audience members to stay seated to not obstruct the view of those behind them. Then again, what else would you expect from a band whom Don Henley joked was once accused of "loitering" onstage?

Eagles did little to dispute that allegation on Saturday during their second consecutive performance at Austin's Moody Center. "There's not gonna be much talking," Henley promised. "No fireworks. No wind machines. No butt-wagging choreography. Just a bunch of guys with guitars."

He wasn't kidding about that last part. At any moment, up to six musicians — Henley,  Joe Walsh ,  Timothy B. Schmit , Vince Gill, Deacon Frey and touring guitarist Steuart Smith — flanked the front of the stage, plucking guitars and delivering sublime vocal harmonies. What Eagles lack in stage presence, they make up for with a bottomless treasure trove of hits, some of which (like "Best of My Love" and "The Long Run") didn't even fit into their two-hour performance.

Why Eagles' Long Goodbye Tour Stands Alone Among Farewell Treks

While many legacy acts have increasingly relied on spectacle to distract from their failing vocals (or  possibly outright fakery ), Eagles continue to do what they've done best for more than 50 years: deliver their songs with near-flawless precision, providing "a two-hour vacation from the madness," as Henley put it. Sure, they've lowered the keys of some tunes — sometimes markedly so — but we should all be so lucky to still possess such supple timbre and steady pitch in our seventies.

The other major distinction between the Long Goodbye tour and similar ventures is Eagles' current touring lineup. Some purists may balk at the notion of an Eagles tour without late co-founder Glenn Frey , but it's difficult to imagine better replacements than Gill and Deacon Frey. The former is a fleet-fingered guitarist and brilliant vocalist, tackling the soaring high notes of "Take It to the Limit" with ease. And it's difficult to overstate the grace with which Frey has stepped into his father's shoes, emulating his voice with haunting accuracy while putting some much-needed pep in these boomers' steps. Replacing a key band member is never easy, but by delegating these roles to family and friends, Eagles continue to do justice to their catalog while honoring their legacy in a way that no anonymous hired gun could.

READ MORE: All 84 Eagles Songs Ranked Worst to Best

But enough of that woo-woo stuff. If it's rock you want, Walsh is your man. "I had some wonderful times in Austin — according to the police report," he joked on Saturday before one of several howling electric guitar showcases. He shredded through James Gang 's "Funk #49," sent talkbox shockwaves through the arena on "Rocky Mountain Way" and ripped the epochal "Hotel California" solo alongside Smith with the poise and finesse of a classical musician. For decades, Walsh was the epitome of a hard-living rock star, but he still sings capably and plays with stunning clarity.

Steely Dan Is the Perfect Opening Act

It's no small feat warming up an audience for a show of this caliber, but Eagles have picked the perfect tour mates in Steely Dan .  Donald Fagen has dutifully kept the band alive since Walter Becker 's death , and on Saturday he led his cohort of world-class musicians through a hit-filled power hour that dazzled on a technical level, from the drum and saxophone solos on "Aja" to the blistering dueling guitars of "Reelin' in the Years." Both of these bands have always prioritized top-notch songwriting and musicianship, and the Long Goodbye tour is a celebration of both technical excellence and generation-defining songbooks. This road trip might not have any frills, but it also has no pretense — just three hours of stone-cold classics played with peerless precision. One day this kind of tour will be a distant memory, so get it while you can.

Three San Diego concerts you shouldn’t miss this week: Pete Escovedo, Jeff Berkley and Jerry Bergonzi

Pete Escovedo and Sheila E The Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

Our picks include the San Diego farewell performance by Latin-jazz percussion great Pete Escovedo at the Music Box, San Diego Music Awards 2023 Artist of the Year-winner Jeff Berkley’s album-release gig at the Belly Up, and sax dynamo Jerry Bergonzi’s double-header at SDSU and Dizzy’s

Pete Escovedo San Diego farewell concert, with Myron McKinley

Compared to 88-year-old percussion master Pete Escovedo, Keith Sweat, John Michael Montgomery, Frankie Beverly and the members of the Eagles and Aventura seem like, well, wimps.

Beverly is 77. Don Henley and Joe Walsh of the Eagles are both 76. Sweat is 62. Montgomery is 59. And the founding members of New York bachata-music band Aventura — brothers Romeo, Henry, Lenny and Max Santos — are each in their early 40s.

All of them are now embarked on their respective farewell tours. So is Escovedo, who rose to prominence in the early 1970s as a key member of the pioneering Latin-rock bands Santana and Azteca before becoming one of the most versatile and in-demand percussionists around.

A partial list of Escovedo’s recording partners includes Tito Puente, Boz Scaggs, Herbie Hancock, Woody Herman, Billy Cobham, Marvin Gaye, Bobby McFerrin, Barry White, Barbra Streisand, Etta James, Stephen Stills and Escovedo’s daughter, veteran solo artist and former Prince drummer Sheila E.

In 2021, he and Sheila E. became the first father-and-daughter musicians to concurrently receive Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards. She is not billed to perform Saturday when he gives what is being billed as his last San Diego concert.

But her musician brothers, Juan and Peter Michael Escovedo, will be on stage. Both are longtime members of their father’s E Family Band and his brassy Latin Jazz Orchestra.

And since the Escovedo clan includes a number of prominent San Diego-bred musicians, the show could be an even more memorable family affair. And center stage will be a percussion master whose lifelong love of music continues unabated.

As an added bonus, Earth, Wind & Fire musical director Myron McKinley opens the show.

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Jeff Berkley on Sunday, October 15, 2023 in San Diego

Jeff Berkley & The Banned album release concert, with Dead Rock West and Kimmi Bitter

Can a love of pot bridge the political divide and bring this intensely polarized nation closer together?

That’s the message of hope delivered by 2023 San Diego Music Awards Artist of the Year-winner Jeff Berkley on “Even the Cowboys.” Or, as Berkley puts it in this country-rocking song: “Right and left don’t matter when you’re on a higher plane.”

Weed is the key inspiration for “Even the Cowboys,” a stand-out number from Berkley’s first solo album in seven years, “Tumbleweed.” The audacious album could just as easily been titled “Weed” — if only to distinguish it from “Tumbleweed,” a poignant ballad on “Fleur de Lis,” the 2013 album by the 26-year-old duo Berkley Hart.

Berkley is a quadruple-threat as a singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer who has contributed to hundreds of albums by an array of San Diego music acts. He shines equally as a solo artist, in a duo setting with fellow troubadour Calman Hart, and as the leader of Jeff Berkley & The Banned, the talent-rich group that will accompany him at his “Tumbleweed” album-release concert.

The lineup also features opening sets by longtime are favorites Dead Rock West and rising country singer-songwriter Kimmi Bitter, who is nominated in two categories in this year’s San Diego Music Awards.

Jerry Bergonzi, Jazz Hastings, Hastings, East Sussex, England, 2022.

Jerry Bergonzi

Tenor sax dynamo Jerry Bergonzi first gained international attention for his work in the 1970s with jazz piano legend Dave Brubeck. His subsequent musical partners have ranged from Miles Davis, Quincy Jones and Eartha Kitt to guitarist Mick Goodrick, drum great Bob Moses and top German keyboardist Joachim Kuhn.

Bergonzi has several dozen solo albums to his credit, along with a well-earned reputation as a saxophonist’s saxophonist. He plays with a rich tone and his dizzying virtuosity enables him to make even the most unexpected musical twists sound inviting and perfectly logical.

Given how infrequent his visits here have been, concertgoers should welcome the fact that he is performing here on two consecutive nights this week.

The first is Thursday at San Diego State University’s Smith Recital Hall, where he’ll be featured with the SDSU Big Band, four smaller student groups and a band that will team him with four of the university’s jazz faculty members. The lineup for the faculty group includes pianist Anthony Smith, bassict Mackenzie Leighton and drummer Tyler Kreutel. In addition, Bergonzi is presenting free workshops Thursday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Smith Recital Hall.

On Friday night, Bergonzi will perform at the all-ages Dizzy’s with a band that features fellow saxophonist (and SDSU jazz department head) Brian Levy, trumpet favorite Gilbert Castellanos, pianist Mikan Zlatkovich, bassist Julian Esparza and drummer Kevin Kanner.

7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, Smith Recital Hall, 5500 Campanile Dr,, San Diego State University. $10-$15 (free for SDSU students). sdsupsfa.universitytickets.com

8 p.m. Friday. Dizzy’s at Arias Hall (behind the Musician’s Association building), 1717 Morena Blvd., Bay Park. $30 general admission; $20 (students). (858) 270-7467; dizzysjazz.com

Music and concerts | motorcyclist sentenced to prison in macarthur road crash that killed whitehall high school student and reading man, subscriber only, music and concerts | faces may have changed, but old crow medicine show’s sound remains the same.

Old Crow Medicine Show will perform Saturday, April 13, at the State Theater in Easton. (Brooke Stevens photo)

Old Crow Medicine Show founding member Ketch Secor had no shortage of topics he was ready to discuss when he phoned in for a recent interview.

There was, of course, another round of touring, a new band-owned studio space, a recently released Old Crow album in “Jubilee,” and a pair of new band members that have come on board in time for this year’s tour, which stops Saturday at the State Theater in Easton.

And when it comes to such topics, Secor has many reasons to feel good about where things stand for his band 25 years into a career that has seen Old Crow Medicine Show become an influential force in roots music and a leader in the resurgence of string bands on the music scene.

The band returned from the pandemic with a reshuffled lineup — Mike Harris (banjo/guitar), Mason Via (guitar) and drummer Jerry Pentecost replaced Chance McCoy, Joe Andrews and Charlie Worsham — and their own newly outfitted studio located just north of Nashville. That’s where the latest edition of Old Crow made their critically acclaimed 2022 album, “Paint This Town,” and now the Grammy-nominated 2023 album, “Jubilee.” Those accomplishments, and most significantly, the ability to tour again, have re-energized Old Crow Medicine Show, Secor said.

“I just think it (the new energy) had more to do with COVID and being able to work again,” he said. “And then the new lineup, a new producer (Matt Ross-Spang), the studio we were in, that we’re working out of now that’s something that we own, that’s been a big factor in the kind of collective spirit of the band. There’s a lot of renewal that happened out of the COVID experience.

“It kind of reminded me of the earliest days of Old Crow Medicine Show,” he said, “just that kind of hustle up your kill and going into the towns as a busker and not knowing what lay in store behind the city limits sign, that unknown quality of ‘Well, what’s next, boys? I guess we’ll find out.’”

Secor isn’t exaggerating when he talks of Old Crow’s beginnings as a busking band. The band members cut their teeth and began shaping their sound — a blend of old-time string band folk, bluegrass, country and other traditional roots sounds mixed with rock and a modern energy — playing on streets in communities around the country.

It was during one of these impromptu performances in Boone, North Carolina, that folk/bluegrass legend Doc Watson saw Old Crow and invited the group to play Merlefest, the popular Wilkesboro, North Carolina music festival named for his late son, Merle Watson.

That appearance gave Old Crow the momentum to start building a touring base, to later on get a record deal and in 2004 release their debut album “O.C.M.S.” That album contained the song “Wagon Wheel,” a song Bob Dylan started writing, but didn’t finish, for the soundtrack of the 1973 film “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.” Secor had heard the tune on Dylan bootlegs and decided to finish the song, eventually getting Dylan’s blessing to release it on “O.C.M.S.”

“Wagon Wheel” caught on and became a signature song for Old Crow, gradually amassing sales and downloads on the way to topping the one million mark in 2013. That was the year Darius Rucker covered the tune and turned it into a chart-topping country hit that further raised awareness of Old Crow Medicine Show, while providing the band with a welcome income infusion.

Seven Old Crow Medicine Show albums have followed “O.C.M.S.” Where “Paint This Town” leaned strongly toward frisky and catchy material, “Jubilee” has more of an even balance between energetic songs (“Keel Over and Die” and “Ballad of Jubilee Jones and rustic ballads (“Allegheny Lullaby,” “Daughter of the Highlands” and “Miles Away”).

Secor looks back fondly on the “Paint This Town” project and how it put Old Crow Medicine Show back on solid footing after the pandemic.

“It was a really fun project to get out there with, having made an album during the pandemic and then going out and testing the waters again to make sure the band still had what it had had before COVID,” he said. “And it turned out there was even more excitement about Old Crow Medicine Show.”

Secor said “Jubilee” finds today’s edition of Old Crow finding their stride.

“The first album (“Paint This Town”) was kind of a get your sea legs and let’s figure out what this is like. Then the second was now let’s make a record where we write all of the material together,” he said. “Mike and Mason and Jerry are all writers on the new album in ways they weren’t as much on the first album. And it’s again produced by ourselves along with Matt Ross-Spang. So it is a little bit more acoustic, a little less of a rocking record for Old Crow, a few more banjos on it.”

Secor said having contributions from new band members on “Jubilee” had an impact on the music and his own songwriting.

“Everybody brings a different way of holding the pen, and they all bring a different ink well to dip their quill into,” he said. “Mike really loves the Grateful Dead, so maybe the chords have a reflection of that. Mason really loves bluegrass. Maybe his melody has a reflection of that. It sort of depends on where you’re coming from. But I’ve always really enjoyed collaborative songwriting. It’s just something that makes me happy.”

Since finishing “Jubilee,” Old Crow has gone through yet another rejiggering of the band lineup. Pentecost has moved on and been replaced by Dante Pope, while multi-instrumentalist P.J. George III has joined to create a seven-man lineup that also includes Secor, Morgan Jahnig (bass), Cory Younts (keyboards), Harris and Via.

The latest version of the band will still sound like Old Crow live, Secor said, and the group plans to stock the shows with everything from new and old original songs to covers to sometimes even a song or two related to whatever city the band is playing in on a given night.

“When we first got started it was basically an open casting call for who wants to join the merry band of misfits,” he said. “It’s like when you hop a freight, you’re either going to get on it or you’re not. There’s no in between. That’s kind of how Old Crow has operated all of these years.

“As long as the canon of song is Old Crow music and I’m up there to continue the through line for the past 25 years, it’s Old Crow Medicine Show,” Secor said. “Whatever it is, as long as there are fiddles and banjos and I’m up there and Morgan’s up there, and whoever else is in the Old Crow Medicine Show is up there, and (if) there’s bones playing and there are mandolins and harmony singing and a whole bunch of smiling faces in front of you, then you’ve got yourself a Medicine show.”
