Justin Thomas takes a shot at the 2023 3M Open

Justin Thomas will travel to South Africa for a shot at making the DP World Tour Championship after agonising missing out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The two-time Major champion has been struggling for form this year after missing his fifth cut in seven tournaments at the 3M Open before then coming tied 12th as a late entry at the Wyndham Championship on the PGA Tour.

It left Thomas,30, agonisingly in 71st place to just miss out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which the top 70 made. It also could have been a fatal blow to his chances of making USA’s Ryder Cup side as Zach Johnson considers his captain’s picks for September 29 - October 1 at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.

Two-time PGA Championship winner Thomas has since confirmed he will tee it up at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, which returns to Gary Player Country Club from November 9-12.

Thomas will make his debut in Sun City with the $6m event being the penultimate tournament on the 2023 DP World Tour schedule. It carries an increased number of Race to Dubai Ranking Points as the 64-man field vies for a place in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, which is open to the top 50 players.

Thomas , currently 214th in the rankings for Dubai, is bidding to become the first American winner of this event since Jim Furyk in 2006. He said: “I am so excited to get to Sun City for the Nedbank Golf Challenge and experience everything South Africa has to offer.

“It is a country I’ve always wanted to visit and this tournament gives me the opportunity not only to do that, but to compete in such an historic event. It’s been going for over 40 years and it is amazing to have Mr Player’s association. I can’t wait to see what makes it so great in November.”

Player , the tournament host, said: “The support of America’s leading professionals has also always been important throughout the history of the Nedbank Golf Challenge. It’s wonderful to have Justin Thomas add to this legacy. I’m excited to see him make his debut at Sun City and see how a two-time Major champion of his pedigree performs at the Gary Player Country Club.

Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood and fellow Englishman Justin Rose are also confirmed for the tournament which has been won previously by South African icon Ernie Els three times, plus the legendary Seve Ballesteros, and Major champions Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Sir Nick Faldo, Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman and Danny Willett.

The tournament is a change in schedule for Thomas who has previously been a key member of Team USA in the last two Ryder Cups with 6.5 points from 9 matches for a 72% win rate. But Thomas has been battling with his game and shot an 11-over 82 in the first round at The Open which included a nine at the 18th.

In 12 starts since the Valspar Championship, he has one top 10, three top 20s and six missed cuts as he faces his worst FedEx Cup finish since joining the PGA Tour where he has banked $54,618,674 in prize money.

Justin thomas, max homa enjoy safari day with wives in south africa, share this article.

Next week, Justin Thomas and Max Homa are set to tee it up in the DP World Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge at Gary Player Country Club in South Africa.

This weekend, however, the duo and their wives, Jillian Thomas and Lacey Homa, took on a safari ahead of their return to golf for the first time since the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome.

The PGA Tour posted photos from its social media accounts sharing Thomas and Homa’s experience in the safari, and they also took to Instagram to share special highlights and moments from the excursion.

In addition to Thomas and Homa, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood and others will battle it out for one of the biggest golf events all year in South Africa.

Justin Thomas reveals his advantage at PGA Tour Signature event, Pebble Beach

Justin Thomas returns to Pebble Beach for the first time since 2019, and he believes he has an advantage over the rest of the field.

Share All sharing options for: Justin Thomas reveals his advantage at PGA Tour Signature event, Pebble Beach

Justin Thomas, PGA Tour, U.S. Open

Justin Thomas loves Pebble Beach, even though he has not played a tournament there since the 2019 U.S. Open .

The reason behind that has been the PGA Tour’s schedule, not because he dislikes the course. But since the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is a Signature Event in 2024, Thomas could not skip it this time around.

And he believes he has a strong chance at victory this week.

“I like the layout. It’s a place where I know I can make a lot of birdies,” Thomas said of Pebble Beach Tuesday.

“I think it plays to a strength in my game in terms of distance control and being able to take spin off of the ball with short irons into these very spinny, severe greens. That’s something I enjoy doing.”

Pebble Beach has the smallest greens out of any course on the PGA Tour . They also have more undulations than most, creating problems for many players every year. This week’s soft conditions will compound those issues for the field, as Pebble’s poa annua greens will be even tricker to conquer.

Thomas sees that as an advantage for him. His otherworldly short game from inside 100 yards should give him an edge this week.

“It’s obviously very situational on how it plays in terms of whether it’s firm or like it is now. It plays incredibly different during the U.S. Open in June than it does for this tournament this time of year,” Thomas said of the conditions.

Justin Thomas, PGA Tour, U.S. Open

“So it plays quite a bit easier, shorter, it’s not as necessary to hit it to the fat part of the green. You can get away with more when it’s this soft. But still, the greens are very, very small... they will be a little bumpier, going to be harder to make putts.”

Thomas missed the cut at the 2019 U.S. Open, carding two rounds of 2-over 73 to finish at 4-over for the championship.

His only other start at Pebble Beach came at the 2014 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he also missed the cut. Thomas did not break 70 and finished at 2-over par.

Despite that, the two-time major champion arrives in Monterey full of confidence after a disastrous 2023 season. He recently tied for third at The American Express , his best finish at an official PGA Tour event since the 2022 RBC Canadian Open.

Over his last four worldwide events, Thomas quietly finished in the top five in each of those starts. He gained more than one shot per round on the field on approach shots in those tournaments, an attribute required to succeed at Pebble Beach.

“I‘m very close. I think, at this point, it’s just starting to win tournaments again,” Thomas said.

“I feel like I’m very, very close to doing that and starting to do it often again. But I fully understand that just because you think that doesn’t mean you deserve it, or it will happen. I need to keep putting myself in that position and getting in contention.”

Max Homa closes out surprise victory in South Africa that left Rory McIlroy a winner, too. Here's why

1789419944

Warren Little

Max Homa would likely have described his time in South Africa as a success regardless of his finish at the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The opportunity to compete in a different part of the world was one the 32-year-old Californian couldn’t pass up, turning it into a family trip by arriving early with his wife Lacey and taking in a safari excursion with fellow PGA Tour pro Justin Thomas and his wife, Jill .

But with a 19-under 269 total at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, capped by a closing six-under 66, Homa is taking home a trophy and a €961,124.05 first-place prize money payout from his working vacation. Homa won his first DP World Tour title (to go with six PGA Tour victories) by defeating Nicolai Hojgaard by four shots (and a hard-charging Thomas, who finished fourth but seven shots back).

“It’s just been tremendous to get to travel to a new place, meet so many amazing people,” said Homa, the fifth American to win the tournament (along with Jim Furyk twice, Johnny Miller, Raymond Floyd and Corey Pavin) but the first since it became a DP World Tour event. “The fans have been amazing. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind.”

Never mind that Homa hadn’t played competitively since the final day of the Ryder Cup on Oct. 1, or in a stroke-play event since the Fortinet Championship in mid-September. And forget the fact that Homa still hadn’t found his comfort zone with the 10-hour time change until a few days into the tournament. His game was spot on, playing bogey-free golf through his first 39 holes and making just three all week.

Suffice it to say, Homa’s putter came in handy at clutch moments. Like here at the 16th hole on Sunday. Homa, who opened the day with a one-stroke lead over Matthieu Pavon, was clinging to the two-shot margin, now of Hojgaard and Thorbjorn Olesen, as he faced this 38-foot birdie opportunity on the par-3 16th hole.

“It was one of those weeks, the ball wanted to go in when it needed to,” Homa said.

And it was also one of those weeks where good breaks came at the right time too, like with this drive on the par-5 14th hole.

“To be granted the opportunity to even be here, I was truly grateful for," Homa said, "but to come out with a trophy is just cherry on top.”

As it turned out, Homa wasn’t the only “big winner” after the end of the Nedbank. So, too, was Rory McIlroy, despite the fact the Northern Irishman wasn’t even in the field.

McIlroy began the penultimate event on the 2023 DP World Tour schedule in first place in the tour’s Race to Dubai points list and was assured to remain No. 1 afterward regardless of the outcome. Yet by virtue of Homa’s victory, coupled with the performance of the rest of the field, McIlroy will arrive at the upcoming DP World Tour Championship having clinched the season-long title for the fifth time in his career no matter the outcome during the coming week in Dubai. McIlroy has 5,164.47 points while Jon Rahm, sitting in second, has 3,081.94. The winner earns 2,000 points.

McIlroy previously had been the winner of the Order of Merit in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2022. Only two golfers have won the title more often: Colin Montgomerie having claimed it eight times and Seve Ballesteros six.

Justin Thomas hits miraculous flop shot to move into Valspar contention

Justin Thomas hit the shot of the day with a stunning flop shot on the par-5 14th in the second round of the Valspar Championship.

dp world tour justin thomas

Justin Thomas hit a miraculous flop shot for a tap-in birdie as he moved into contention on day two of the Valspar Championship.

Thomas , 30, went on to card a 2-under 70 on a testing day on the feared Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort.

It moved the two-time US PGA champion to 5-under par for the tournament and just one stroke off the lead heading into the weekend.

Thomas is going in search of his 16th PGA Tour title but his first since the US PGA Championship in May 2022.

The American's driving was particularly errant for a second day running but thankfully his short game bailed him out more often than not.

In particular on the par-5 14th where Thomas sprayed his second shot with a fairway wood way right of the green.

After getting line of sight from behind an electric scoreboard, Thomas was able to take a free drop.

Thomas' ball went forwards on both drops, so he was able to handily place his ball in the rough.

He then stepped in to play the most miraculous flop shot you will likely see all season.

It was certainly the shot of the second round.

Thomas landed his ball in the perfect possible spot in the fringe and his ball trundled down to kick-in range for birdie.

Thomas was left to rue a poor iron shot into the 18th hole as he went on to make a bogey to card a round of 70.

PGA Tour veteran Stewart Cink, Kevin Streelman, Chandler Phillips, Brendon Todd and Mackenzie Hughes are all tied for the lead on 6-under par heading into the weekend.

Pre-tournament favourite Xander Schauffele is still in the hunt at 2-under par.

UAE youngsters set to rub shoulders with stars of tomorrow at Abu Dhabi Challenge

D espite the UAE witnessing its heaviest rainfall on record this week, Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club has pulled out all the stops to ensure the second edition of the Abu Dhabi Challenge goes ahead as scheduled from April 18-21.

The game’s rising stars and DP World Tour winners will compete in the seventh event on the Challenge Tour’s 2024 Road to Mallorca schedule, including 2023 Ryder Cup Vice Captain Nicolas Colsaerts, five-time DP World Tour winner Alex Levy, UAE’s No.1 professional Joshua Grenville-Wood and Craig Howie, who is an ambassador for this week’s host venue and has been a regular at the course for over a decade.

The Scotsman’s association with Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club began during winter training camps with the University of Stirling, where Howie found the tranquillity of the course a particular positive.

“It’s great to get away from the hustle and bustle of cities like Dubai,” said Howie, who has made the cut in all six of his Challenge Tour starts this season.

“Al Ain is a little bit quieter, so it’s a perfect place to come and work away from distractions. The course is always in great condition, and the team do a great job of keeping it like that. The practice area is as good as you’ll get anywhere else.”

Howie and Co will be joined by several of the UAE’s homegrown talents thanks to the Emirates Golf Federation’s (EGF) long-term partnership with the European Tour group, which aims to develop golf in the UAE for at least the next decade.

As part of that agreement, the EGF has received 60 invitations across the Abu Dhabi Challenge and next week’s UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for UAE golfers.

Nine of those invitations have gone to UAE National Team players, including the country’s No.1 amateur golfer Ahmad Skaik, his brother Mohammad and Khalifa Al Masaood.

Rayan Ahmed will also be flying the flag for the UAE, one month after securing both the Individual Gold and Team Gold at last month’s GCC Golf Championship in Qatar.

“I am really stoked to be playing my first Challenge Tour event in the UAE,” said Ahmed.

“I can't wait to rub shoulders with the highest quality players on the Tour and represent the UAE. My first target is to make the cut, but at the same time, my focus will be on my planning and execution, and I will take it each shot at a time.

“I love this course. My first time playing I won the Junior Open shooting 65, and last week I played the JAGA International Series and played 9 under par over 3 days with a 63, so my game is up there and ready for the Challenge Tour.

“I know the course well, I’m aware it will be a very different setting and field of competition. I am extremely confident of my long game, and my putting is getting stronger just in time.”

As well as giving local amateurs a taste of elite-level tournaments, two club professionals in the UAE are also set to rub shoulders with the stars of tomorrow.

Dubai Hills PGA Professional Louis Gaughan, who made the cut at this event last season, secured an invite from the EGF after topping the Emirates PGA Order of Merit, while Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club’s Thomas Ogilvie banked an invite after winning the Emirates PGA Play-Offs.

While the local players will be able to take advantage of prior course knowledge, the test this week will slightly differ to what they have come to know after the team at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club introduced ten new tee boxes to lengthen the course from 6,700 yards to 71,17.

With Thomas Love, Director of Agronomy, ensuring those changes to the course were made in plenty of time in the lead up to the club’s Challenge Tour debut, a new challenge was sent his way this week when the course was hit with a major storm that swept across the country.

The National Centre of Meteorology confirmed that the record rainfall that fell on the country was an exceptional event in the UAE's climate history since the start of recording climate data.

The Khatm Al Shakla area, just 36km away from this week’s host venue, saw the worst of the weather with 254mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours.

Despite the challenges that were sent Love’s way, he and his team have done everything in their power to ensure the course remains in tip top shape ahead of tomorrow’s first round.

“It's the biggest storm I've ever seen in my lifetime and something I wouldn't expect to see in the Middle East!” said Love.

“We knew rain was forecasted, so we were already semi-prepared for it. The agronomy team came in at 3am and I think the last storm was around 1.30am.

“Most turf areas were playable and allowed us to let the practice day go ahead. Bunkers however were all full, including cart paths and any roads around the facility.

“It was all hands-on deck this morning with multiple pumps and big 4500-gallon tankers working non-stop all day.

“The main goal is to get the bunkers back in play for the first round tomorrow. I'm still very confident we will have the course in fine shape for the event and be able to showcase our facility.”

Mohammad Skaik (L) and Rayan Ahmed (R) will be flying the flag for the UAE

Best in 2024 majors: Scottie Scheffler aggregate, Xander Schauffele breakthrough stand out in major specials

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

There is going to be at least one first-time major winner this season, probably two if you go with history, and bettors have the chance to predict who it will be among many major championship season futures bets.

It’s not just the eve of the Masters, it’s also the eve of the 2024 major championships season and there is action to be had over the course of all four.

The next three months or so will also bring us the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort and The Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club.

Who will be the best performers in the quartet of majors? If you think you know, BetMGM Sportsbook has a multitude of majors specials to peruse.

From the obvious (like will an individual win a major in 2024) to the exotic (like which player will have the lowest aggregate score in relation to par across all four events). I’ll get to that one soon.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler leads the board to win one of the four majors at +125 but keep in mind, in the last 78 years of major championship golf since World War II, we have had exactly 156 first-time major winners, averaging out to exactly two a year.

In fact, only four times since the war has there been a season without a first-time major winner. In 1972, legends Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Lee Trevino scooped the major pool, 1980, when it was Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Seve Ballesteros, 2000 when Tiger Woods won three and Vijay Singh the other and most recently in 2014 when Rory McIlroy claimed two majors and Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer each won their second, have broken the trend.

So while Scheffler could indeed win a major or two this season, chances are a new champion is coming somewhere. Viktor Hovland (+225), Will Zalatoris (+500), Xander Schauffele (+550), Ludvig Åberg (+550), Patrick Cantlay (+600) and Max Homa (+700) are considered the most likely to join the club by the oddsmakers.

Scheffler is +800 to win two majors in the season, a feat not happened since Brooks Koepka won the U.S. Open and PGA Championship in 2018. Jordan Spieth (2015) and McIlroy (2014) also managed this in the last decade. McIlroy is +1000, Koepka is +3300 and Spieth is +4000 to do it again.

Scheffler is +400 for the Masters – if he wins the green jacket, do you expect his odds for the remaining three majors to be shorter? If so, maybe this +800 is for you.

The low aggregate market across all four majors is certainly intriguing. You need a player to make the cut in all four for a start and then play well. Once again Scheffler leads the market at +350 with Rory McIlroy next at +650.

I could mount an argument to take Scheffler at +350 to do this, such is his incredible consistency, rather than the +400 to win the Masters this week. Barring injury, which is always a concern with futures, Scheffler is likely to contend at all four majors. Blowout scores are not in his arsenal. In fact, he hasn’t had an over-par round this season and a 75 is the highest posted round he’s had since March of 2022. He last missed a cut at the 2022 PGA Championship, the only time in his last 14 major appearances he didn’t play the weekend and ultimately finish no worse than T23 in all of those.

Scheffler is -175 to make the cut in all four majors, too short to jump on when you factor in the chance of injury. Personally, I’d need +200 odds or better to jump into this market.

With that bar in mind, consider U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark at +200 to make the four weekends. Prior to winning at Los Angeles Country Club last June, he’d only made two of six cuts in majors but he’s a new man now and plus money could represent value.

Plenty of punters are backing Tiger Woods to make the cut at +100 for the Masters. If you think he can make the cut in all four majors, it’s +350. Outside Clark, Sahith Theegala +250 is a flyer I could get behind as a great young talent and Tony Finau +200 has been a tease the last three years, making three of the four cuts. If you could be sure of his health, Will Zalatoris +200 is another option.

You can also bet on the rare chance a player will finish in the top five, top 10 or top 20 in all four majors. Rickie Fowler finished in the top five of all four majors in 2014 – without winning any of them – but is +40000 to do it again this season. Spieth did it in 2015, winning twice, and finishing runner-up and T4 in the others. He’s +25000 to repeat top-fives this season. Scheffler is +2000, with McIlroy at +4000.

Not even Scheffler was able to get four top-20s last year, though he went close. Scheffler was T10 at the Masters, T2 at the PGA, third at the U.S. Open but dropped to T23 at the Open. Oddsmakers think he can get inside the top 20 for all four this season, pricing the Texan at +150. Schauffele, at +800 , appears some value here as he did it last season!

Plenty other major markets exist as well at BetMGM, including the following:

  • +110 : No majors in 2024 to be decided by a playoff
  • +150 : Any player to win 2+ majors in 2024
  • +200 : An English player to win a major in 2024
  • +225 : Patrick Cantlay or Xander Schauffele to win a major in 2024
  • +240 : Justin Thomas or Jordan Spieth to win a major in 2024
  • +275 : Nick Dunlap Top 10 finish in any 2024 major
  • +450 : Cantlay and Schauffele both make the cut in all four 2024 majors
  • +500 : Thomas and Spieth both to make the cut in all four 2024 majors
  • +600 : A hole-in-one in all four majors in 2024
  • +700 : McIlroy and Rahm both win a major in 2024
  • +800 : Scheffler and Hovland both win a major in 2024
  • +1000 : All four majors won by a player from the USA
  • +2500 : All four majors won by a European player
  • +8000 : Any player to win the Grand Slam (all four majors in 2024)
  • +15000 : All four majors in 2024 to be decided by a playoff

Thomas Bjørn named as a Vice Captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup

Luke Donald has named Thomas Bjørn as his second Vice Captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup which will be played at Bethpage Black, New York, USA, from September 26-28, 2025.

Thomas Bjorn VC

Bjørn returns to the role having also been one of Donald’s five Vice Captains in 2023 when Europe defeated the United States 16 ½ - 11 ½ at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Italy.

It will be the sixth time in total the Dane has been a Vice Captain in the biennial contest and the tenth time overall that he has been part of Team Europe, having also been a player on three occasions as well as the victorious Captain at Le Golf National, Paris, in 2018.

The 53 year old is the second Vice Captain to be named by European Captain Donald following Italian Edoardo Molinari, whose appointment was announced in January .

Bjørn said: “It was a natural progression from last time. Luke called me and said he wanted me to carry on into New York, understanding that it's going to be a completely different Ryder Cup in 2025 at Bethpage.

“We had some conversations back and forth mostly about how to go from the victory in Rome and into a new set up for New York, debriefing on what happened in Rome and how we carry it forward.

“We had a fantastic environment in Rome. Luke did an amazing job. He was a fantastic leader, not just of 12 players, but of the whole Ryder Cup Europe team that worked so hard behind the scenes.

“It was amazing for me to be part of that because I knew how all of those things worked from Paris. To see how he added a few extra things in Rome and made it even better was amazing and I was very proud of him. He was exceptional.”

European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald said: “I am very excited to have Thomas back on the team. Once I was appointed as Captain again, my thoughts quickly went to who I wanted to have in the backroom staff. And Thomas certainly was one of those.

“He means a lot to me. He's passed on his knowledge and I've had a great relationship with him over the last few years. To have those relationships, to enjoy the people you're spending time with along that journey is really important.

“This is an away Ryder Cup, so the earlier we can start planning, the better. It has more challenges than a home match, but now I have Edoardo and Thomas alongside me I can get together with them and start the planning process around how we can create the right culture for the team to succeed in New York.”

Bjørn brings a wealth of Ryder Cup experience to the Vice Captaincy role, including twice being part of the backroom team for European victories in away matches, at Oakland Hills in 2004 and at Medinah Country Club in 2012.

He was also a Vice Captain for the home victories at Celtic Manor Resort in 2010 and in Italy last year, while his only reverse as part of Team Europe came at Hazeltine National in 2016.

Two years after that, in September 2018, Bjørn Captained Europe to a comprehensive 17½-10½ victory at Le Golf National in France.

As a player, he was part of three European victories. He made his debut under Seve Ballesteros in 1997, becoming the first Dane to represent Europe, winning one-and-a-half points from his two matches in Spain, partnering Ian Woosnam to defeat Justin Leonard and Brad Faxon in the fourballs, and then halving with Leonard in the singles.

He then contributed two points from his four matches under Sam Torrance at The Belfry in 2002, teaming up with Darren Clarke to defeat Tiger Woods and Paul Azinger in the fourballs, and beating Stewart Cink 2 and 1 in the singles.

His third appearance as a player came 12 years later when he qualified for Paul McGinley’s team at Gleneagles in 2014, partnering Martin Kaymer to earn half a point against Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker in the Friday fourballs.

Bjørn is the most successful Danish golfer of all time, with 15 victories on the DP World Tour. He has also won twice on the Legends Tour since turning 50 in 2021.
