When in Puerto Vallarta excursions are a must! Puerto Vallarta is a major touristy town from cruise ships docking at the marina, to thousands of people flying into Puerto Vallarta daily, it’s busy!

With the tourism comes some great Puerto Vallarta excursions . The excursions in Puerto Vallarta range from romantic cruises to epic jungle adventures, and day trips out at sea.

We’ve visited Puerto Vallarta for a holiday multiple times and have lived there, and we’re sharing all the great Puerto Vallarta excursions found both on land and at sea .

Puerto Vallarta Excursions on Land

Zip lining in the banderas bay jungle.

The first time I, Heather, visited Puerto Vallarta was on a cruise with my family. When we stopped in Puerto Vallarta, my sisters and I were all stoked to be doing a zip-lining excursion, and holy smokes, it didn’t disappoint!

More than ten years later, I still have vivid memories of zip lining across canyons, between trees, and feeling on top of the world as I flew over the treetops!

To this day, the Puerto Vallarta zip-lining tour is one of the best memories I have of doing tours while traveling! When looking through tours, be sure to check out what the zip-lining excursion includes ! Things to look out for are donkey rides, lots of hiking, and the number and distance of the zip lines you get to go on!

sun shining through tree tops

ATV Through the Jungle

This is a tour for the adventure junkies! Blazing on dirt roads and trails through the jungle above Puerto Vallarta is a thrill.

When looking at ATV tours in Puerto Vallarta , be sure to look at what is all included. Some tours are shorter than others, the places you visit on the ATVs are different, and some are paired with zip lining and repelling down waterfalls! So choose your ATV Puerto Vallarta excursion wisely !

Tequila Tasting in Puerto Vallarta

Tequila anyone!? With lots of distilleries in and around Banderas Bay, Tequila Tours in Puerto Vallarta are a hit.

Some offer the chance to visit multiple distilleries, while others are just a single one.

Something to watch out for when choosing a Tequila Tour is the duration of the tour. You don’t want to expect to go out for a few hours only to be gone an entire day!

There are also Tequila tasting tours paired with food tours just in the city, and they’re a huge hit on Get Your Guide !

Taco or Street Food Tour

Okay, we get some people want to do a tour for tacos and street food so they know it’s the best of the best, but shoot — honestly, you can do this one on your own! In fact, we have an entire post about finding the best taco in Puerto Vallarta here.

Taco tours in Puerto Vallarta typically run around $50 USD and you get to enjoy tacos from multiple different taco stands and have a street churro too. If you get a good tour guide, you’ll also find that you learn a bit about Puerto Vallarta on top of enjoying many different tacos!

Mexican Food Tour

Just yesterday we were walking around Puerto Vallarta and came across people doing a food tour where they  learn to make homemade tortillas.  We also overheard that people were getting shots of tequila so that’s a great addition!

Taking a food tour is a great way to be able to bring a bit of Puerto Vallarta back home with you!

Puerto Vallarta Excursions Out to Sea

Rhythms of the night.

This is the perfect  romantic excursion in Puerto Vallarta.  Last time we were in Puerto Vallarta we did this for my sister’s birthday and had SO MUCH FUN!

We didn’t know what to expect on this tour, but came back just in awe of the show that we witnessed! The food was certainly not anything to write home about, but the show made the trip worth it!

Oh! And, it’s ” all-inclusive”  meaning you get all you can drink alcohol and the food is buffet style, so that’s all you can eat too!

For people  honeymooning in Puerto Vallarta , we strongly suggest taking the Rhythms of the Night Excursion (book it here) !

Deep Sea Fishing

Getting out in the bay and fishing? Yes, please! This is a fantastic tour for everyone in the family! We did this tour with our stepdad and brother-in-laws and had so much fun!

Unlike the Rhythms of the Night tour, multiple different agencies are running the deep sea fishing excursions out of Puerto Vallarta. We went with Charly’s Fishing Tours and had a fantastic time!

A few things to pay attention to when booking a fishing excursion  are,

  • How long you’re out at sea.
  • Do you get fresh ceviche with your catches of the day — this was a highlight on our fishing tour!
  • Are you guaranteed a certain number of fish, and what kind of fish are you going for?
  • Where does the tour take you?
  • How many guides / deckhands are on the boat with you?
  • Do they use devices to locate fish, or is it pure luck?

With Charly’s Fishing Charter, we really didn’t go out deep into the ocean. We wanted to go for Mahi-Mahi, but they wouldn’t take us out! However, we did catch SO MANY FISH! It was amazing.. and our guides made us fresh ceviche right on the boat with fish we just caught, taking the tour to a whole nother level.

With that said, upon returning to the marina, another family had got out fishing and between the six of them, they caught one fish and really didn’t have a good time. So, be sure to read the reviews before booking, and we can totally recommend Charly’s Fishing Tours for a good time!

Puerto Vallarta Snorkeling Excursions

Snorkeling is quite a popular Puerto Vallarta excursion. There are again many different companies offering snorkeling tours down the coastline. While you can pack your own snorkel gear and swim on your own, tours are a great way to get to experience multiple places in one day.

We saw many people on snorkeling tours in both Yelapa and Los Colomitos Beach . Both of those places we did our own day excursions from Puerto Vallarta, which you can read about below.

READ MORE | Complete Guide to Yelapa a Beach Only Accessible by Boat READ MORE | Los Colomitos Beach and Hiking Guide

Pirate Party with Fireworks

Every night there’s a pirate party boat that cruises its guests around Banderas Bay. This boat is hard to miss from shore, as the music is loud, the twinkling lights are visible from anywhere on land, and the fireworks go off like clockwork every night at 8:45 PM.

This pirate cruise is for travelers looking for a party ! It offers unlimited alcohol, and is basically just a floating dance party at sea!

We’ve not done this excursion in Puerto Vallarta , however, we see the fireworks every night.

Hot Dog Tubing

Okay, I’ll admit it.. this is definitely not the actual name for this, but shoot — look at the photo, it totally looks like a hot dog !

These little inflatables get pulled behind a boat going back and forth up and down the coastline. It’s a simple little water excursion, but perfect for those looking for a short time on the water.

hot dog tubing trip on the ocean in Puerto Vallarta

While totally not an excursion, Jet Skis are a water activity that loads of people take in right from the beach.

Walking along the beach, you’ll find many places that have jet skis parked right in the sand . Likewise, both the Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta marinas have jet skis to rent. If you’re not looking to rent the jet skis in person, you can book them online in advance too .

Last summer, my family took out the jet skis, and they felt that 30 minutes on the water was more than enough time . If you have the option to book in person, it may be best, as taking on the jet skis on a day when the water isn’t too choppy would make this excursion much more enjoyable.

Parasailing From The Beach

If you’re afraid of heights, parasailing isn’t for you! But shoot, it’s a super fun experience if you’re up for an adventurous, yet relaxed Puerto Vallarta excursion !

The parasailing tours that leave off the beach in Puerto Vallarta, typically are only in the air for five minutes on the dot. We’ve timed them multiple times, so be sure to see how long you’re flying for! The online tours , state a ten minutes fly time, so it may be best to book online.

We’ve been parasailing where we got to sail with each other, which in my head is a totally different experience than flying solo, but either way, the views from above the bay are just brilliant !

Booking Excursions in Puerto Vallarta

When planning to do an excursion in Puerto Vallarta , sometimes it’s best to just book ahead . That way you can take away the hassle of haggling with people on the beach, and you can have a trip to look forward to.

Likewise, if you’re on a strict time frame, having a pre-booked excursion will ensure you can actually do the excursion that you wish.

Puerto Vallarta Adventures offers a discount when booking multiple excursions , so it may be best to book with the same company if planning on doing more than one tour in Puerto Vallarta.

With that said, if you have the extra time and can go with the flow, it’s nice to not have everything booked out in advance because you can then wait for the weather to determine what you do, and once you arrive in Puerto Vallarta you may change your mind on what you want your vacation to be!

More on Puerto Vallarta

We’ve lived in and have traveled to Puerto Vallarta multiple times. We honestly weren’t convinced we would love Puerto Vallarta as much as we do. But shoot, it’s fantastic here!

Eat Alllll the Tacos on a Food Tour

Going to Mexico and not stuffing yourself with tacos? I mean…not a possibility. That’s why going on a food tour in Puerto Vallarta is more than a must. And if you’re willing to go a bit off the beaten path, you can have a much more authentic experience outside of the touristy area!

We went on the Versalles After Dark Food Tour by Vallarta Eats, a tour that took us on a hunt for the most authentic flavors in this neighborhood.

A Mexican tortilla with fillings set on a black plate, and two lime wedges on the side, inserted in a post about Puerto Vallarta excursions

Trust me when I tell you that we did NOT go hungry. We had tacos al pastor (my favorites!), tostadas, pozole (a traditional soup), quesadillas, frozen pie for dessert… and I’m sure I’m forgetting at least a couple of stops!

Our guide was knowledgeable and so nice, and I highly recommend going on either this food tour or another one by Vallarta Eats – they have a bunch that look good!

These ideas are perfect for people looking for:

A day off the beach or resort

Things to do on a cruise ship stop

Getting off the beaten path

Some new things if you feel like you’ve done all the regular day trip stuff!

puerto vallarta day excursions

By the way – the tours, ideas and itineraries on this list are things you can actually do.

For instance, the tourist town of Tequila is often mentioned as a great day trip, but it’s well over 4 hours away, so probably not a place that you’re going to visit if you only have a week in Puerto Vallarta.

So, here are some of the best excursions and places to see near Puerto Vallarta on a day trip.

( This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click through and make a purchase I may make a small commission. I only share information about things I know, love and trust! )

1. Hot Springs at Nuevo Ixtlan Aguas Termales

Watch the full video tour!

puerto vallarta day excursions

Yes, there are hot springs you can visit near Puerto Vallarta, less than a couple hours away making for a perfect day trip.

You will head inland, closer to the Sierra Madre mountains (read – stunning scenery)!

The hot springs known as Nuevo Ixtlan are natural , but the owners have created about a dozen stone tubs (of different sizes) where the natural thermal water is piped into.

The water stays at about 25 degrees celsius, so it’s pleasant to visit all year round.

Now, unless you know the area and have a high clearance vehicle, I recommend you book a tour.

Tip – Book this tour through Viator like we did

It includes transportation , visiting a local market, a soak in the hot springs, a fresh BBQ lunch and a massage on the beach after a full day of adventure. Wow!!

P.S. – there’s more than just these hot springs in the area, check out this full guide to the 8 best hot springs and waterfalls near Puerto Vallarta .

2. Swim in a Natural Saltwater Pool

puerto vallarta day excursions

Try something different and head north into the Riviera Nayarit to explore some beautiful beaches that are mostly known only by local surfers.

Your final destination is a spot called Alberca de mar at Punta Mita. It’s a natural pool in the ocean !

This trip is for the adventurous. It’s perfect if you’re looking to leave the busier pace of Puerto Vallarta or if you feel like a fun day off the resort.

You’ll be heading north towards Punta Mita.

Find your way to the untouched Burros Beach (here’s a google marker ).

Follow a short hike through the jungle to the next beach, which is the left side of the Grand Palladium Resort.

This is where a natural, saltwater pool is located for you to swim and lounge in.

Of course, the easiest way to find it is by staying at the Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa !

3. Botanical Gardens, River Swimming and Tequila Distilleries

puerto vallarta day excursions

Instead of a day trip to the town of Tequila (which is 4 hours from Puerto Vallarta), head to the tequila distilleries down by the Botanical Gardens near Mismaloya.

Make an entire day out of it by strolling through the botanical gardens for a couple of hours admiring the orchids, cacti, cacoa plants and coffee trees.

Then swim in the river onsite, have lunch and explore the several tequila distilleries in the area.

You can either do this on your own by book a tour.

We booked this tour through Viator and loved every moment.

Pro tip – I find it very useful to know some conversational Spanish when I’m on holiday in Mexico. Rocket Languages is my favorite program to learn Spanish. Try it out here for a free 7-day trial .

Knowing a few phrases in Spanish has helped us get better deals, find great hidden gems and avoided being ripped off multiple times!

4. Take a Water Taxi in the Quaint Fishing Village of Yelapa

puerto vallarta day excursions

Spend a whole day in Yelapa, a laid back village only accessible by boat .

No cars here, but you’ll see plenty of horses. Many folks describe Yelapa like Puerto Vallarta was in the 1970s.

To get here, take an orange bus heading to Boca de Tomatlan. The best spot to catch it from is the southern end of the romantic zone, and it should be about 30 pesos.

Inside tip – sit on the right side of the bus to enjoy the view and scenery.

Once you’re in Boca, grab a water taxi – negotiate the price before you get on the boat (should be about 200 pesos).

The boat ride itself is quite the experience – it’s about 30 minutes.

If you’re visiting in the right season, you might be able to spot whales (drivers are always watching and will point them out).

Choose to get off at the second boat stop which is the Yelapa town centre (the first stop is the beach).

Tip – first check the boat return times so you can plan when you need to be back by.

Walk around the charming little fishing village and find somewhere to eat.

Then, follow the path that takes you behind all the houses that will lead you towards a waterfall hike .

There are vendors along the way, so you can always ask them to make sure you know where to go.

puerto vallarta day excursions

Enjoy the beautiful views and swim in at the base of the waterfall.

On your way back, hit the beach and look for the pie lady !

Playa Isabel is the beach to visit if you want shallow and more swimmable water.

Make it easy by booking a day trip !

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel, arrange the boat ride, lead you through the jungle to the waterfall, recommend best places for lunch and show you around Yelapa and its best beaches.

For added off the beaten path fun from Puerto Vallarta, I recommend strolling through the winding roads up through the hills and checking out the authentic restaurants and bars.

Need a cool place to stay in Yelapa?

puerto vallarta day excursions

Chances are you’ll fall in love with this laid back spot and won’t want to leave (or maybe you missed the last water taxi??)

I recommend Casa Coco a beautiful home with the most perfect sun-filled terrace overlooking the ocean .

From here you can also access the Cathedral Waterfall (about an hour hike), which is the bigger and better waterfall that most tourists miss.

5. Ancient Petroglyphs in the Middle of the Jungle

puerto vallarta day excursions

On this day trip , you will head to Altavista to visit a sacred archeological site known as Pila del Rey.

On your guided hike through the jungle, you will come to a natural pool surrounded by smooth large rocks covered in ancient signs and symbols that were carved thousands of years ago.

Get off the beaten track and immerse yourself in the incredible history of the Indigenous people of this region.

6. The Old Town of Mascota, Jalisco

puerto vallarta day excursions

Travel higher up in the mountains to the historical town of Mascota, a charming place found among the Sierra Madre mountains.

On your way there, stop at a raicilla and tequila distillery, then arrive in town and tour the ancient churches, petroglyphs and old cobblestone streets .

You’ll also visit the scenic spot called Yerbabuena, a lagoon plaza.

This tour includes stops at Mascota and Talpa de Allende – both are Pueblos Magicos or ‘magic villages.’

This tour includes hotel pickup and breakfast and lunch.

While you can rent a car and drive yourself, the road is tricky to navigate and having a driver allows you to enjoy the stunning scenery along the way.

7. San Sebastián del Oeste

puerto vallarta day excursions

Step back in time to the 1700s by walking through the narrow, historic streets of San Sebastián del Oeste , probably one of the best non-beach things to do outside of Puerto Vallarta .

Stroll through the romantic, narrow streets in this jewel of a town nestled within the mountains.

On your way, stop at the bridge for great photos and pick up something yummy at the bakery.

Visit La Quinta for organic coffee and a tour of the plantation behind the storefront, go for a tasting at the Don Lalin tequila distillery for their unique flavors – like pomegranate tequila.

Check out the gold and silver mines and have an amazing lunch or dinner at the Italian restaurant, Montebello.

There’s also a scenic spot called La Bufa higher up in the hills, where you can either hike up or drive for an amazing lookout.

puerto vallarta day excursions

I suggest a guided tour to visit San Sebastián del Oeste, as your guide will take care of all the driving and share the fascinating history of the area and stories of the families who live there.

I recommend this tour , where you guide will tell you all about the small villages you pass through, take you to many of the places noted above.

If you’re visiting Puerto Vallarta on a day trip from a cruise, book this private tour who will pick you up at the port and tour you around the 17th-century mountain town of San San Sebastian del Oeste.

Cute Coastal Communities

8. surfing in sayulita and san pancho.

puerto vallarta day excursions

Sayulita is a hip little surfer town, but there’s a lot more to it than that.

If you like trendy vibes and think of busyness as more of an energetic vibe, then Sayulita is the place for you.

I think it’s totally worth going up to Sayulita for a day trip, even if you don’t surf.

My guide to fun things to do in Sayulita on a day trip has tons of ideas for you.

But if you do want to try it, there are plenty of instructors who will work with you for a one-hour private lesson – and it’s so much fun!

a girl wearing a pink and black bathing suit surfing on a turquoise surf board

But, it’s also fun to explore the colorful streets and visit the cute boutique shops.

Suggestion – Maybe some of your group wants to surf and others don’t? Book a hike & yoga session !

You’ll enjoy a tranquil hike through the jungle that leads you to a quiet beach where you instructor will guide you through a practice as you listen to the gentle waves.

Then, find a spot on the beach, order yourself a passion fruit margarita and watch everyone else surf!

There are some world class restaurants here (especially if you’re vegan), so definitely stick around for dinner.

close up of a yellow drink in a round glass on a table at the beach

And whether you come here to surf or not, you should go find the hidden beach , a 10-minute stroll passed a picturesque cemetery to your own personal, perfectly clear water oasis.

On the other side of Sayulita (north) if you want to keep exploring, a little further is Las Cuevas beach and then Mal Paso.

Have something to eat at Don Pedro on the beach, especially if you love ahi tuna – you’ll know where to find it, it’s usually the busiest place but for a reason!

puerto vallarta day excursions

The best place to stay in Sayulita is the Hotel Peix , it’s a small boutique hotel right on the beach in a perfect central location.

Even if you don’t stay overnight, you can still be served from their beach lounge chairs and they have the best rooftop bar.

Or check out my full guide to the best places to stay in Sayulita .

Alternatively, you could visit San Pancho, less than 15 minutes north of Sayulita, for a more chill experience.

If you want a similar beach and a few shops and restaurants, San Pancho is basically a low-key version of Sayulita.

9. Sunday Market hopping in Bucerias and La Cruz

Sunday is market day and if you love farmer’s markets , you will love the ones in Bucerias and La Cruz.

La Cruz is well known for being the best in the area.

The food is great and there are many unique, hand-made items here that aren’t normally found in all the other touristy shops.

puerto vallarta day excursions

La Cruz is about 30 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta.

And of course, you might as well visit a perfect beach while you’re here – Destiladeras Beach is just north of town.

It’s super quiet and one of the nicest beaches around, plus the water is very clear and shallow.

Find some beach chairs to rent where staff will serve you food and drinks.

Between La Cruz and Puerto Vallarta is Bucerias, a charming community with a great blend of locals and expats.

If you want a massage on the beach , come to Bucerias where it’s much cheaper.

Stroll through the colorful streets and on a self-guided ‘instagrammable spots’ tour.

Then park yourselves at Karen’s on the beach for happy hour!

Or, plan a half-day cultural tour where you get to meet local families and artisans who will share their stories, show you their way of life and cook you lunch!

Read more about visiting Bucerias here .

10. Outdoor Adventures at the Canopy River

puerto vallarta day excursions

Enjoy a fiesta in the mountains as they call it! Come here to walk or ride an ATV across the Jorullo Bridge – the longest suspension bridge in the world that can support vehicles.

Ride the zipline through the jungle over the Cuale river.

And if you need some liquid courage to help you get across the suspension bridge…there’s plenty of margaritas and beer at the restaurant.

Or enjoy a great meal at the restaurant afterwards.

Book the highest rated tour on Tripadvisor which includes the Jorulla bridge, zip line, mule riding through the jungle and then tequila tasting at their mountaintop bar, which also has an infinity pool to lounge in!

11. Speedboat Ride and Zipline into a Tequila Bar Tour

This tour is the perfect day trip for cruise ship passengers.

On the Los Veranos Canopy Tour, you can enjoy a speedboat ride and soar above the Sierra Madre foothills on a network of 15 zip lines, with the last one ending at a tequila bar!

Then make sure you’ve got your swimsuit because right from the bar, you can take the natural waterslides into the calm river pools to cool off.

12. Visit Mayto and Tehuamixtle – Off the Beaten Path Beaches

puerto vallarta day excursions

About two hours south of Puerto Vallarta are Mayto and Tehualmixtle beaches – they are pristine and make for a fun and relaxing day trip that’s off the beaten tourist path.

These beaches are long and wide and visited by very few, making it a great way to find open space to relax and distance from others.

At Mayto, you can visit the Campamento Tortuguero to help release baby turtles into the ocean!

And if you want calm water to swim in, Tehuamixtle is the beach you want to visit.

puerto vallarta day excursions

Grab this tour that will take you by boat to several hidden beaches (including Mayto and  Tehuamixtle) as well as a stop at the botanical gardens.

You’ll have a chance to go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters. In this day and age with all the health concerns, I recommend bringing your own gear.

I like this full face mask and snorkel , a total game changer!

Plus, there are some ultra romantic hotels here if you’re looking for a getaway that’s a little more slower paced and secluded – try Hotel Mayto .

13. Hacienda Tour on Horseback with Tequila Tasting

puerto vallarta day excursions

For something a little different to do just outside of Puerto Vallarta, try horseback riding through the fo othills of the Sierra Madre mountains.

You’ll ride to a traditional Hacienda. where you’ll get a tour of the beautiful property and countryside, enjoy a traditional Mexican lunch and taste the different tequilas that are made from the agave plants grown on site.

Oh, and bring your bathing suit as you’ll pass by a river and a natural hot spring for a quick dip!

Book this awesome tour with Carlos!

14. Cycle Along the Coastline to Punta de Mita

If you’ve been laying on the beach or by the pool and are in need of a little exercise and sightseeing at the same time, this tour is for you.

You will cycle about 40 miles on a gorgeous route through the hills, have lunch and admire beautiful Punta de Mita and then head back to PV. Bikes are provided!

Book your tour here (plan for about 4-5 hours).

>> Staying at an all-inclusive resort? Here’s a Packing List (17 things you should always bring)

I hope you’ll find that most of these day trip ideas are a fresh perspective. You might be wondering why there are some popular day tours not included on this list.

Visiting Marietas Island (the hidden beach) is one of them.

I visited a few years ago and it was honestly overrated. There were way too many people and the beach itself was underwhelming – one of those places where the photos were way nicer than the experience.

I’ve heard they have since restricted the number of people who can visit at a time, so it’s nice to see some responsible tourism practices going on.

Instead, I’ve curated some more unique ideas that can be done on your own (if you have a car or want to take the bust) or with a local tour guide in a small group for a more personal experience.

In my opinion, it’s these types of trips that always turn out the best!

Planning a trip to the West Coast of Mexico and wondering about the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta?

Puerto Vallarta is a picturesque town on Mexico’s Pacific coast. While many fun activities are within the city limits, you should also consider a day trip or two during your holiday.

Popular day trips in Puerto Vallarta include boat tours, hiking around the Sierra Madre Mountains, visiting Guadalajara, and much more. So, you can easily fill your vacation schedule in Puerto Vallarta with other fun activities that get you out of town.

Let’s get to the top Puerto Vallarta day trips.

12 Easy and Fun Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Day trips from puerto vallarta to guadalajara.

Guadalajara is the capital city of Jalisco and is known as an important cultural hub in Mexico, and one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Mariachi, Tequila, and Birria are all plentiful around Guadalajara, and it also hosts many impactful events.

Image of Guadalajara Cathedral and State Government Palace - Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico

Guadalajara has a beautiful historic center, great tequila-tasting bars (some say this is where Tequila was born), and other fun activities for the whole family.

Because of its historic connections and beautiful architecture, it’s a wonderful place for children to experience a more authentic piece of Mexico.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

Distance: 205 miles

Guadalajara is in inland western Mexico, about a five-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta. However, a new highway in the works should significantly reduce travel time.

However, there are several direct flights from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara. This might be the best route if you’re taking a day trip.

The flight is only about an hour, and the airport in both cities is pretty easy to get to and from.

Visiting the Sierra Madre Mountains

Puerto Vallarta sits at the foot of the incredible Sierra Madre Mountains and is one of the best starting points for hiking and adventuring around the lush mountain range.

The Sierra Madre Mountains are about 250 miles (400 kilometers) long, so there’s plenty of space for exploring.

Image of Remote beach with Sierra Madre mountains in the Bays of Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico

You can explore a diverse ecosystem, waterfalls, beautiful views of the forest and surrounding region, and a nice escape from the busy city of Puerto Vallarta.

There are many ways to get out and explore the Sierra Madre, including ATV tours , ziplining adventures, simple day hikes for all levels, and other activities for your outdoor adventure in Puerto Vallarta. But no matter which you go with, you’re sure to have a blast. Especially if you and your family are adventurous travelers.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to the Sierra Madre Mountains

Distance: 10 miles

The best way to the Sierra Madre Mountains is with a guided tour. The mountain range is vast and remote, and it’s incredibly easy to get lost. With a tour guide, you can make the most of your time without worrying about getting lost.

Depending on your mood, there are several ways to visit the Sierra Madre Mountains.

The Puerto Vallarta Jungle Hike is the perfect family-friendly activity that includes roundtrip transportation and a hike to Palo Maria Waterfall and other interesting wilderness sites. Check rates here .

If you want something a little more adventurous, try an ATV tour. The ATV or RZR Bridge Experience includes a ride across Jorullo Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Latin America.

You’ll also stop for a quick swim at El Salto waterfall, deep within the jungle. The tour is recommended for those six years old and up. Check rates here .

And if you want to take it to the next level, a zipline tour is the way to go. The Outdoor Zipline Adventure is a comprehensive outdoor adventure that includes a speed boat ride, a zipline adventure, and a visit to Boca de Tomatlan and Banderas Bay.

This tour is recommended for those eight years old and up. Check rates here .

Mascota is a beautiful mountain town in the state of Jalisco, conveniently located between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

It’s at a high elevation, around 4,000 ft (1,200 meters) above sea level, so the climate is very cool compared to coastal cities and towns.

Mascota is a beautiful, picturesque town with old cobblestone streets and a fascinating unfinished Temple of the Precious Blood near the center. In addition, there are tons of other activities.

There are a few hiking trails nearby, and it’s a popular place for horseback riding, kayaking around the lagoon, boat tours, and fishing.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Mascota

Distance: 65 miles

It takes about two hours to drive to Mascota from Puerto Vallarta. There are few public buses, and the distance is too far for a taxi. So, the easiest way to get there is with your own car, hiring a private driver, or joining a guided tour from Puerto Vallarta.

Day Trip to Mascota and Talpa de Allende from Puerto Vallarta is a highly-rated full-day tour that takes you to Macota and Talpa de Allende, another little town nearby.

Transportation, breakfast, lunch, a bilingual tour guide, water, and travel insurance are also included. Check rates here .

Los Arcos National Park

Los Arcos National Park, a protected marine park since 1984, is located between Las Gemelas and Mismaloya Beach in Banderas Bay.

Los Arcos National Marine Park in Mexico near Puerto Vallarta

The marine reserve is known for its natural beauty, lively marine life, and beautiful coral reefs. Because of this, it’s a popular spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, and sightseeing. You’ll even have a chance to swim with many different sea creatures, including sea turtles, tropical fish, and rays.

The national park gets its name from the granite arches that rise out of the water. There are also caves, deep tunnels, and no shortage of coral reefs.

You can see the islands from Puerto Vallarta, but taking a day trip from Puerto Vallarta is highly recommended for a better view and time for swimming.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Los Arcos National Park

Los Arcos was once connected to the coast of Mexico, but erosion over time has left five small, rocky islands.

If you want to get as close as possible, you can take a bus or taxi from downtown Puerto Vallarta to Mismaloya Beach. This secluded beach is right in front of the arches and has some great snorkeling.

However, I’d recommend a boat tour to Los Arcos itself because you’ll get much closer to the arches and have a better chance of seeing more ocean dwellers.

This Luxury Yacht & Snorkeling is the perfect family-friendly option for those who want to get right up to the arches for the best snorkeling while traveling in comfort and bliss. Check rates here .

Tequila is a small pueblo magico (Magic Town) in the state of Jalisco. As you may have guessed, it’s where the drink, Tequila, comes from.

So, if you’re looking for the most authentic tequila tasting and the opportunity to learn about this beverage, Tequila is the place to go.

The little town is surrounded by agave fields, the key ingredient in tequila. It’s the best place to learn about tequila’s history and production and sample different flavors.

The town also has a small local market, where you can pick up more samples of local dishes and other foods and fruits.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Tequila

Distance: 100 miles

The town of Tequila is a little further away than other day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

Because Tequila just passed Guadalajara, you can combine this trip with the city.

If you’re driving, it takes around four hours each way. For most of the trip, you’ll drive along Highway 200 and continue for about an hour past Guadalajara. It’s best to leave early in the morning or stay overnight for plenty of time to explore and learn in Tequila.

There’s no direct bus from Puerto Vallarta to Tequila. Instead, you can take a bus to Guadalajara and another to Tequila.

Visiting Ancient Ruins Near Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is one of the few regions in Mexico that Aztecs or Mayans did not inhabit, so there are no pyramids here.

If you want to see pyramids, the Riviera Maya are highly recommended. Or, you can head over to Mexico City to visit Teotihuacan or Cholula ruins.

That being said, there’s still a lot of cultural heritage near Puerto Vallarta left by the other indigenous. The best way to learn more about this region’s cultural significance and fascinating history is by taking a day trip to the small, historic towns around Puerto Vallarta.

Punta Mita, San Sebastian, San Pancho, and Sayulita are four culturally significant towns near Puerto Vallarta. In the following sections, I’ll review each of these towns, how to get there, and popular attractions.

Punta de Mita

Punta de Mita is a small town about 40 minutes from Puerto Vallarta. It’s known for its secluded beaches, luxury resorts, fresh seafood, and world-class restaurants.

But Punta Mita is so much more than its beautiful beaches; it’s also home to the “shooting tomb” or “tumbo de tiro” in Spanish. When the site was first uncovered, archeologists found human remains, ceramics, and utensils that dated back to the Classic Period.

Shooting tombs are believed to be ancient burial grounds for indigenous people who lived in the region.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Punta de Mita

Distance: 20 miles

Punta Mita is just north of Puerto Vallarta. The easiest way to get there is with your own car or with a shared van.

To get there with your car, head north of Puerto Vallarta, following the main road and staying along the coast.

San Sebastian del Oeste

San Sebastion del Oeste is another must-see small town near Puerto Vallarta, especially if you’re interested in learning more about the history and culture of the region while escaping the beach for a little bit.

Unlike most popular spots near Puerto Vallarta, San Sebastian del Oeste is nestled high in the Sierra Madre region.

Downtown San Sebastian is like stepping back in time, with a beautiful central square paved with cobblestone streets and lined with small shops.

There’s so much to do here, from learning about the region’s rich history to hiking to some beautiful vistas to trying local cuisine and talking with a friendly local family.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to San Sebastian del Oeste

Distance: 40 miles

San Sebastian is not too far from Puerto Vallarta, making it an easy day trip.

There are several buses from Puerto Vallarta to San Sebastian, or you can even take a taxi or an Uber there. It might be more challenging to catch a ride back, as significantly fewer taxis are around, but not impossible.

The easiest way to get to San Sebastian is with a guided tour. You’ll have all the transportation taken care of and be with a designated guide who can explain the cultural significance of the town.

This San Sebastian del Oeste day trip from Puerto Vallarta is the perfect tour that includes roundtrip transportation, lunch, beverages, a stop at the colonial buildings and churches, and a trip to some scenic viewpoints. Check rates here .

San Pancho is a small town in the Mexican state of Riviera Nayarit. It has a small, beautiful beach, a quiet downtown area with rows of artisan stalls, fresh seafood, and beachside restaurants.

Although you need just a day for this little Mexican town, visiting San Pancho is easily one of the best things to do on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. It’s off the beaten path and delivers more of a local experience than anything.

A lush jungle, tropical birds, and the overall beauty of the Peninsula North surround the little town.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to San Pancho

Distance: 26 miles

San Pancho is a small village close to another popular tourist destination, Sayulita.

Driving from Puerto Vallarta to San Pancho takes about an hour, and a day trip to Sayulita can easily be incorporated into your itinerary.

There are local buses from Puerto Vallarta to San Pancho, or you can take a taxi or private transfer from anywhere in Puerto Vallarta.

If you’re driving from Puerto Vallarta, you can easily find Google Maps directions for this quick trip. Just make sure you save the directions for offline mode, as reception can sometimes be spotty on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

Tour to the Magical Town of Sayulita and San Pancho is an excellent way to travel to both Pueblo magicos (magic towns).

The tour includes roundtrip transportation, time to explore and shop around the cobblestone streets in both towns, and plenty of time to relax on the beach. Check rates here .

Sayulita is a small fishing village well-known for its incredible surfing, friendly local families, good street food, and much more.

This little beach town has a very laid-back vibe. Its gorgeous beaches are much less crowded than those near the Puerto Vallarta pier. This town is also an excellent spot for surfing.

With its stunning beaches, Sayulita has long been considered a hidden gem on the Pacific Coast. Still, it has become a popular tourist destination for locals and foreigners in recent years.

Either way, it’s worth the trip to explore the town, eat fresh seafood, and enjoy a quiet beach.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita

Distance: 24 miles

Sayulita is only about 25 miles (38 km) from Puerto Vallarta, and it’s easy to get there.

The cheapest way to get to Sayulita is by public bus. Several local buses leave from downtown Puerto Vallarta and even the airport.

Because the trip is pretty quick, you can also take a taxi, Uber, or drive yourself. In this case, you would exit the city and pass Buscarias. There are several signs along the way pointing you in the right direction.

Just know that there are no grocery stores in Sayulita, so if you decide to stay overnight and want to bring anything, stop at one of a Chedraui, Walmart, or Mega along the way.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of getting there, several tour groups offer this day trip.

From Puerto Vallarta: San Pancho and Sayulita is one of the most popular day trips from Puerto Vallarta and includes a stop in Sayulita and San Pancho.

Roundtrip transportation, free time to explore the colorful streets of San Pancho, and time on the little surfer beach in Sayulita. Check rates here .

Vallarta Botanical Gardens

If you’re looking for something fun and unique in Puerto Vallarta but don’t feel like venturing too far from the city, you must check out the Vallarta Botanical Gardens.

The gardens are incredible and possibly one of the best botanical gardens in Mexico. You can tour the gardens full of local plants and fauna, learn about how some plant species grow, and even dine on authentic Mexican cuisine.

This is an excellent activity for children, as they can learn more about the plants and local species while getting a short break from the sand and sun.

You only need a few hours at Vallarta Botanical Gardens, so you’ll have some extra time to explore the Cuale River near the romantic zone in Puerto Vallarta or any other activities that catch your attention near downtown and Old Town.

How To Get From Puerto Vallarta to Vallarta Botanical Gardens

Distance: 15 miles

Vallarta Botanical Gardens is only 30 minutes from Old Town Puerto Vallarta or the romantic zone.

You can take a bus, taxi, or Uber there.

It’s right off the only highway going south of Puerto Vallarta. It’s located at Km 200, Carretera Puerto Vallarta a Barra de Navidad.

Puerto Vallarta Boat Trips

If you’re ready to leave the main beach, get off those comfortable beach chairs, and explore more of the Pacific Ocean, you must try one of the many boat trips to Puerto Vallarta and the surrounding waters.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic sunset cruise, a thrilling snorkeling tour, a whale-watching tour, or a simple boat ride around the Pacific, there’s something here for you.

Puerto Vallarta: Rhythms of the Night Cruise & Dinner Show is an enjoyable sunset trip with a delicious buffet-style dinner and an immersive show for people of all ages.

The boat trip takes you around the ocean right around sunset and continues by candlelight with an enchanting acrobatic show. Check rates here .

Vallarta: Yelapa Waterfall & Majahuitas Snorkel Adventure is a different type of adventure that’s equally fun. You’ll visit a hidden waterfall, have a few hours for snorkeling and maybe even swimming with sea turtles, and soak in the views of two picturesque coves near Puerto Vallarta.

The tour also offers paddle boarding, kayaking, and other fun water activities. Check rates here .

When you’re in Yelapa, make sure to visit the infamous Pie Lady. She’s right on the beach and known for her interesting banana cream pies.

Puerto Vallarta: Las Caletas Beach Hideaway Experience is another great boar ride, complete with a hidden beach, jungle-clad mountains backdrop, and other fun activities.

While there’s a lot to do on this tour, the hidden beach is by far the highlight. You can only access the hidden beach by boat, and it’s equipped with swaying hammocks, a row of natural palm trees, and beautiful views of the ocean and the mountains. Check rates here .

Whichever boat tour you decide on, you won’t be disappointed. After all, the incredible marine life and the beautiful ocean are really what’s making Puerto Vallarta one of the most popular destinations in all of Mexico.

12 Best Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta

Sharing is caring!

Whether you’ve been to Puerto Vallarta every year for decades or this is your first trip to this beautiful Mexican beach town, there are so many day trips from Puerto Vallarta to explore.

If it’s your first trip to this region of Mexico, you’ll no doubt want to spend most of your time getting to know all of the fun things to do in Puerto Vallarta and exploring the local best beaches in Puerto Vallarta .

But if you have more time here, a day trip to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Romantic Zone or Hotel Zone is a fun way to get to know more about this stunning coastline.

Best Way to Explore Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta

The best way to get out of Puerto Vallarta to explore tends to be with your own wheels. If you are happy to drive in Mexico, then consider renting a car from somewhere like Mex Rent a Car or Gecko Car Rentals.

Both offer full coverage and excellent service and you can pick it up and drop it off at the Puerto Vallarta airport, making the whole trip seemless.

While having your own car makes most of these Puerto Vallarta day trips easier, it is possible to explore using public transportation, by hiring a driver for the day, or by taking a group tour.

The bus network around Puerto Vallarta is pretty great, especially for visiting the beach towns to the south. And it only costs 10 Pesos (about 50 cents US) for each local trip.

Where possible, I have listed group tours that make the day easy and fun.

Best Puerto Vallarta Day Trips

Most of these fun Puerto Vallarta day trips offer unique ways to get out on the water or explore other nearby beach towns.

colorful flags over the top of a cobbled street with small shops on both sides.

Sayulita is a popular place to explore and for good reason, it is a beautiful place!

1. Sayulita

This is without a doubt one of the most popular day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

Getting from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita is easy if you have a car. It takes about 45 minutes to drive along highway 200 (which is hardly a highway, especially once you get past Bucerias).

There are so many great things to do in Sayulita . You could easily spend a few days based here exploring the beaches and all of the restaurants in Sayulita .

This is the place to come near Puerto Vallarta if you want to learn to surf. There are local surf schools like Sayulita Surf School or Lunazul Surf School where you can take lessons or rent boards for the day.

Afterward, head for beers at Yambak and enjoy delicious pastor tacos at Tacos Diaz.

If you are planning to drive to Sayulita, be sure to arrive as early as possible. Parking can be a bit of a problem during peak times around December and January. It’s not impossible, but you’ll have to find a quiet side street and walk into town or pay for town center parking located near the beach.

If you don’t want to drive from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita, you can take the bus, take an Uber, or head here for the day with a tour.

There are tons of tour options from Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita for the day. Depending on how you want to spend your day you can opt for one of these options:

  • Food and Walking Tour
  • Beach Tour including Sayulita and San Pancho
  • Sayulita tour with Guide and Tequila Tasting

2. Bucerías

Bucerías is personally one of my favorite beaches near Puerto Vallarta.

If you want to find a beach where you can spread out for the day, that has calm waters for swimming or floating, and is within walking distance of tons of great food, then add Bucerías to your Puerto Vallarta day trips list.

The beach in Bucerías is five miles long. Which means regardless of how busy it gets, there is still plenty of space to relax.

There are a few food and souvenir vendors who walk up and down the beach to sell you things, but it’s not an overwhelming amount and sometimes it’s nice to be able to have a drink or a donut without having to get up, isn’t it?

A few blocks from the sand are tons of great Bucerías restaurants including my personal favorites, Tacos Junior for pastor tacos and Lamara for ceviche.

Bucerías is one of the easiest day trips from Puerto Vallarta. There is tons of free street parking available, so you don’t have to worry about it getting too busy. You can also easily take the bus here from this Sam’s Club bus stop and be here in under an hour.

sunset over the beach with a few people swimming in the ocean.

If you get the chance to stay in Bucerias until sunset, I highly recommend doing it. The sunsets here are some of the best.

3. Boca de Tomatlan

Boca de Tomatlan is a small fishing village located about 30 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta.

I highly recommend taking the bus here from the Romantic Zone. The town is very small and parking is quite limited, especially during peak travel months.

If you are visiting off-peak in October or November or in late spring, you’ll find parking along the river without a problem.

The bus leaves from this bus stop in the Romantic Zone and it terminates in Boca de Tomatlan, so you won’t have any problems getting off at the right stop.

The main draw to Boca de Tomatlan is to take boat trips out to other places. But it is worth spending some time here for the great beachfront restaurants.

This is a no-fuss place where you can grab plastic seat at a plastic table and eat some of the most delicious and affordable seafood in entire region. El Huachinango is my personal favorite spot for their whole grilled snapper.

If you want to do some exploring here on your day trip from Puerto Vallarta, cross the river and walk along the coastal trail to small quiet beaches like Colomitos and Playa Caballo .

beach with some rocks and mountains in the background with clouds above.

The best beaches near Puerto Vallarta require a little bit of work to get to, but they are well worth it.

4. Playa las Animas

There are a couple of ways to get to Playa las Animas from Puerto Vallarta, but driving is not one of those ways.

The only way to access Playa las Animas is to take a boat there or to walk there.

If you want to spend the day hiking along some of the most breathtaking coastline in the region, then get yourself to Boca de Tomatlan as suggested above. Then follow the coastal trail all the way to Playa las Animas.

It is about a 2-hour walk if you stop a bit to drink water and take photos. You can also stop at any of the beaches along the way for a swim or to relax for a while.

Playa las Animas has tons of restaurants and bars along the sand where you can eat lunch, drink ice cold Pacificos or margaritas, and relax in the shade of their umbrellas and lounge chairs.

Then you can either hike back or take a water taxi back to Boca de Tomatlan.

If you don’t want to hike, you can take a water taxi each way. Once you arrive in Boca de Tomatlan you will see tons of small boats near the beach. Most people will offer you a trip before you even have to ask. It should cost roughly 100 Pesos each way (about $5 USD).

There are tour options available for visiting Las Animas as well.

If you want to take a boat directly from Puerto Vallarta without dealing with any buses, you can enjoy a boat trip like this one which is private for up to 8 people. You’ll visit sites like Los Arcos, be able to go snorkeling, and then stop for lunch at Las Animas. Book that tour here .

If you want to do the hike, but you are traveling solo or you simply want to explore it with a knowledgeable guide and other likeminded travelers, this group tour offers the full hiking experience all the way to Las Animas.

5. Los Arcos

Los Arcos is, as the name suggests, a rocky outcrop where there is an arch naturally created by coastal erosion. The area is best known for its snorkeling and is a wonderful day trip from Puerto Vallarta.

The best way to experience Los Arcos is on a boat tour. The boat tours usually start in Puerto Vallarta and take you out to the rocky islands where you can go swimming, snorkeling, or kayaking. They usually include lunch or drinks and snacks and some even stop at nearby islands like Colomitos or Las Animas.

These are some of the best Los Arcos tours that we recommend:

  • Snorkeling Tour : This tour will start in Puerto Vallarta where you’ll meet your guide and take the bus together to Mismaloya. From Mismaloya, you’ll hop on a boat and explore Los Arcos, go snorkeling, learn about the history of the islands, and also get to know the bird life that calls this sanctuary home. This is the best overall experience option. Book that tour here .
  • Kayak and Sunset Tour : This kayak tour starts in Mismaloya, so you will have to get yourself there via bus or Uber. From here you’ll hop on some kayaks and explore Los Arcos while watching the sunset. After the sun has gone down you will head to a bioluminescent spot where your paddles with light up the water. Book that tour here .
  • Private Tour Option : If you are traveling with a large group, be it your family or a group of friends, then a private tour may be your best option. You pay for the boat for the day and then make a personal schedule with the crew which can include stopping at some of the popular nearby beaches before going snorkeling at Los Arcos. Book a private tour here .

If you don’t want to take a group tour and you feel like your Spanish is a decent level, you can get yourself to Mismaloya (by boat or Uber as mentioned above) and simply inquire with the local boats for a trip out to the arches. This will be the cheapest way to explore Los Arcos.

whale breeching out of the water in puerto vallarta mexico

Seeing whales up close is such a special experience.

6. Whale Watching

Like visiting Los Arcos, the only real way to get out and go whale watching is to take a tour. Whether you have gone whale watching before or not, seeing these animals up close never gets old (at least not for me).

I have been whale watching in Cabo San Lucas , San Jose del Cabo , La Paz , and a few times in Puerto Vallarta. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a whale breeching out of the water. Of watching the fins wave to you from shore or from a nearby boat.

The best time to see whales in Puerto Vallarta is between December and March. You will almost definitely see whales if you head out between late December and early Febraury.

Of course, they can never guarantee it, but I have never not seen whales when heading out at this time of year. In fact, you can even see them from the shore easily at this time of year.

There are so many different companies to go whale watching with because it is such a popular day trip from Puerto Vallarta. If you don’t want to book in advance, you’ll find a lot of tour operators around the Romantic Zone or if staying at at resort, you can usually book through the concierge service.

These are my top picks for the best whale watching day trips from Puerto Vallarta:

  • Catamaran Cruise : This is a four hour boat trip, which is one of the longest options available making it a true day out on the water. You will leave on the Catamaran from Puerto Vallarta and tour the bay while having coffee and breakfast. Then you’ll head out in search of whales. The tour will not only look for whales but also dolphins and other marine life in the area. There is a marine biologist on board to explain the migration patterns and answer any questions you have. Lunch as well as drinks are included before you head back to Puerto Vallarta. Book that tour here .
  • EcoTour : This option is fantastic for those that really want to learn more about the migratory whales that you will spot during the boat tour. On board will be biologists and a tour leader. Snacks and drinks are included and the tour lasts for about 3.5 hours. Part of your booking fee goes towards a humpback whale research project which you’ll learn more about on your tour. Book the ecotour option here .
  • Whale Watching on a Mega Yacht : If you want to explore the Bay of Banderas on a stunning luxurious super yacht with a few beers or cocktails in hand, this is the option for you. This isn’t the best option for families, but if you want to have a bit of a sunset whale watching day out, this is a great option. Book the mega yacht tour here .

7. Botanical Gardens

Located to the south of Puerto Vallarta, the Botanical Gardens are a fun day trip from Puerto Vallarta where you can learn more about the native flora and wander through this peaceful oasis.

To get here, you can take the bus from this bus stop which usually says El Tuito on the window. Sometimes it will also say Jardin Botanico on there, but not always. Tell them you want to go to the Botanical Gardens. Bus tickets on this bus cost about 50 Pesos. The bus runs roughly every 30 minutes.

The alternative option is to take the same buses to get to Boca del Tomatlan which are mentioned in #3 of this list. From Boca de Tomatlan you can take a taxi to the botanical gardens and then opt to take the bus back.

Entry is currently 300 Pesos per person (about $17 USD). Check out the website of the Botanical Gardens to learn more about opening times and what you will be able to see.

dusty beach town with pink building and a bicycle with a palapa umbrella over it.

Some of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta are to the small unknown towns like Yelapa, San Pancho, or others that you spot along the way.

Yelapa is one of the most popular Puerto Vallarta day trips that you can do. It has become so popular in fact, that many people are opting to spend several days in this isolated beach with a few small guesthouses available.

You get to Yelapa in much the same way you get to Las Animas except that you can’t walk to Yelapa. You can only access this slice of paradise by taking a boat.

To explore Yelapa as a day trip from Puerto Vallarta, take the bus to Boca de Tomatlan. Head over to the pier where all of the boats and their captains are waiting and tell them you want to go to Yelapa.

Pay the captain once you are on the boat, there is no need to pay for a ticket before you get on (this is something of a scam to get you to overpay). It should cost about 150-200 Pesos (under $12 USD). Be sure you have Pesos, not US dollars and make sure you have enough to get you back as well. There are no ATMS in either of these towns.

Once in Yelapa you have the option to simply enjoy the quiet beach where you can relax and eat delicious seafood when you get hungry. Or you can get out and explore the nearby trails and waterfalls.

There are two waterfalls that are relatively easy to reach from the beach in Yelapa. Follow the signs for  cascada or waterfall. This is a helpful guide to get you on the right track for visiting both.

Needless to say, pack your swimsuit, comfortable and waterproof walking sandals, and a quick dry towel.

beach with lush green trees and a pier sticking out into the water in punta mita, one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

Explore the beaches of Punta Mita, head out surfing, or get on a boat to go scuba diving nearby.

9. San Pancho

San Pancho is the quieter, lesser known neighbor to the popular Pueblo Magico of Sayulita.

About an hour from Puerto Vallarta, San Pancho is the place to come to get away from the crowds but without the work required to get to Yelapa or Las Animas. You can simply hop in a rental car and drive straight to San Pancho. You’ll easily find a parking spot and then walk straight to the beach.

The beach here is wonderful for relaxing and the water is nice and calm for swimming. There are cute boutiques for shopping along the main street. There are also some great places to grab food, especially the street cart of Ceviche Girael .

If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can take a tour like this one which includes a stop in both Sayulita and San Pancho.

puerto vallarta beach with the sunsetting over the beach.

Spend your days exploring the cool day trips from Puerto Vallarta and come back in time to watch sunset over Los Muertos Beach.

10. San Sebastian del Oeste

The only day trip from Puerto Vallarta that doesn’t include a stop at the beach. San Sebastian del Oeste is actually not near the coast at all. You’ll head inland to visit this popular Jalisco Magic Town that is battling to keep its culture alive.

The stunning brick buildings of San Sebastian del Oeste are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and should not be missed on your trip here. Another popular thing to do here is explore the coffee plantations where you can see the coffee growing and then sample some freshly roasted brews.

Another thing to do while in San Sebastian is hike up to La Bufa. This viewpoint offers incredible views back over the town. Take it easy if you aren’t used to higher altitudes because you’ll have a bit less oxygen than at sea level. San Sebastian sits at about 4,500 feet (about 1300 meters).

The best way to get here is to drive yourself. It takes about an hour and a half each way and the road can be windy, so take your time and stop along the way at some cute local towns.

If you would prefer to leave the driving to someone else, you can g o on a guided tour like this one . It includes a knowledgeable bilingual guide, a stop at a local coffee plantation, lunch at a local restaurant, and free time to spend wandering the town. Book that tour here .

11. Punta Mita

Located in the Riviera Nayarit , this little peninsula has been made popular by the rich and famous. It is packed with luxury resorts and exclusive golf resorts. But it is also home to stunning beaches, great waves for surfing, and cute little towns with delicious food.

If you have a rental car, you can explore the little beaches that dot the coastline here like Playa la Lancha or Palito Verde. If you get hungry, you don’t want to miss ceviche and fish tacos at Cevicheria La Cruz located on the road back to Puerto Vallarta.

One of the things that makes this a great day trip is if you pair it with a trip to number 12.

woman sitting on a boat with a rock structure in the water behind her at islas marietas, mexico, one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

A boat trip out to Islas Marietas is an absolute must when visiting Puerto Vallarta.

12. Islas Marietas

Islas Marietas is a marine reserve that is home to sea lions, tons of bird life including blue footed boobies, as well as a plethora of underwater life waiting to be explored.

You can visit Islas Marietas on a snorkeling tour, or if you want to really get beneath the surface, you can go diving here. Besides in Cabo Pulmo, the diving here is some of my favorite in all of Mexico.

Punta Mita Expeditions leave right from the main pier in Punta Mita and will take you out to Islas Marietas to dive around the stunning marine life here. You can also opt to snorkel if you would prefer.

If you want to visit Islas Marietas from Puerto Vallarta with a tour, this boat tour is a great option . It includes paddle boards and kayaks to use to explore around the islands. You will also have access to snorkeling gear and there will be a guide with you to help you learn more about this magical set of volcanic islands.

Gay hotel company brings luxury to Puerto Vallarta

Tryst Puerto Vallarta to open this spring

puerto vallarta day excursions

The Tryst Puerto Vallarta begins welcoming discerning gay guests this spring, just in time for the Mexican resort city’s Pride celebrations.

The 55-room resort includes a penthouse suite featuring two terraces, three large suites with expansive living areas and terraces and several junior suites with unique features. A highly anticipated rooftop pool with a bar area and restaurant offering fine Mexican cuisine are just some of the highlights.

“You can stay here and never leave the resort,” said Tristan Schukraft, the driving force behind Tryst Hotels, and self-described CEO of “everything gay.”

While he started out in his career working in the early days of electronic ticketing, Schukraft may be more known for his work with MISTR, a popular online source for PrEP. He also recently entered into an agreement to purchase the Abbey in West Hollywood, Calif.

With Tryst he promises “it’s a fun, exciting atmosphere.”

“The idea is not just the guests are coming to the resort, but locals,” said Schukraft. “So, when you stay here it’s the way to mingle with the local gay community.”

To welcome and include both guests and locals, the resort will host drag brunches in the hotel restaurant. Weekend parties featuring DJs on the eighth floor pool and bar area also seeks to make this not just a place to stay, but one to celebrate with the community.

Schukraft hopes visitors will get to know guests or locals poolside, or in the restaurant, and make lifelong friendships.

Or perhaps find a bit of romance: After all the hotel is set in the famed Zona Romántica.

“Tryst Hotels are not merely luxury destinations; they are a celebration of gay culture, where every guest is embraced,” said Schukraft. “Our mission is to create spaces where luxury and identity flourish without compromise.”

The D.C. Travel and Adventure Show took place last month in D.C., and LGBTQ-specific travel was among the topics the convention highlighted. The Washington Blade in its preview of the expo noted LGBTQ travelers may book a resort or vacation that promises “everyone is welcome,” but upon arrival feel uncomfortable by reactions of staff or other guests due to expressing their identity as queer people.

Schukraft has experienced this.

“I was at a hetero-friendly hotel Miami, but it was also marketed to gay men,” he explained. “So, you have two guys kissing at the pool and you have a straight couple looking over and wondering are they staying at a gay hotel. It’s sort of an awkward occurrence.”

Everyone, therefore, is welcome at Tryst resorts, but it is not being marketed outside of the community.

“My boyfriends and I have even experienced side-eye glances for our choice of swimwear,” Schukraft said. “You won’t find that at Tryst Hotels.”

Speaking of attire: Many luxury guesthouses, inns and hotels catering to gay men offer clothing-optional zones for guests. It’s an allure for some travelers.  But, not at Tryst.

“Don’t get me wrong, clothing optional resorts are fun, but that’s not our concept. Our concept is a luxurious, inclusive resort,” Schukraft said with a touch of elan apropos for the “CEO of everything gay.” “Of course wear your thongs [and] Speedos.”

Tryst Puerto Vallarta and Tryst San Juan in Puerto Rico, which is slated to open in 2025, are being marketed as gay-owned, gay-focused resorts with luxurious offerings and amenities. Many resorts known to epitomize luxury may be seen as slightly conservative or “stuffy.”

Luxury promises not to come only in the form of superior bedding, bathrobes, slippers and skincare products, but also in the stunning interiors.

The Puerto Vallarta property engaged the same studio known for their acclaimed work at the Four Seasons Tamarindo. Designers from Estudio Esterlina bring a refined mix of minimalism, modernism and Mexican.

“Why can’t you have fun and luxury in the same space? Here, you let your hair down by the pool, enjoy a pool party, a fine Mexican meal in our full-service restaurant, a drag brunch on weekends and socialize with new friends all while feeling safe,” Schukraft said. “Our goal is to show luxury doesn’t have to mean stuffy.”

Darwin was right, it is an amazing place.

puerto vallarta day excursions

The last full day of our Galápagos cruise dawned bright, with clear skies. The weather would change during the day. After breakfast we boarded tenders and were told it would be a dry landing. That meant we didn’t have to get in the water to get off the tender. Instead, we got to a very nice dock on the Island of Santa Cruz, in the middle of a bustling town. We were informed by the naturalist with us the population of the Island was about 25,000. We then boarded a bus for the short ride to the Charles Darwin Station, Giant Tortoise Breeding Center. We were greeted by a life size seated statue of Darwin. It was really interesting and we got to see more giant tortoises, and baby ones as well. The Center was really close to town and they told us we had an hour to walk back to meet our bus for the next part of the day. I am sure the goal of the walk was to have us shop at the various stores along the way. Some were really nice, while some were typical tourist shops. While I rarely buy anything on my travels, as I have learned after many years, whatever I buy often ends up boxed up in a closet. But many did shop, and a couple of my traveling companions bought some really nice silver jewelry.

We had been told where to meet the group, which was back at the dock, for the second part of the day. We again got on busses, and headed to a tortoise preserve in the highlands. On the way we stopped for a Scalesia tree planting activity. It is a restoration project supported by Celebrity. We each got boots to put on, two baby trees, and a trowel. Then were led into the forest to plant our trees. On the way back to our bus, my group was stuck behind a giant tortoise, who was meandering along the same path we were taking. It was fun to watch him, until we could finally walk around him, and be on our way.

Then back on the bus to the El Manzanillo Ranch and tortoise preserve. There are a lot of tortoises on Santa Cruz Island. At the ranch we had a great buffet lunch, and were treated to entertainment, a wonderful dance program by kids in a folk-dance group. They were fun to watch. The program for the day called for us to then take a walk through the preserve. But during lunch the rains began, and they came down in buckets. So many of us chose to pass on the walk, get back on the busses, and head to the dock in town. We had been told the tenders would be running regularly and that we had up to three hours to stay on the Island and shop. I don’t know anyone who did. It was still drizzling and we all decided to head back to the ship. We heard later from the final group that came back, those who chose to take the walk through the preserve, that they nearly got stuck on the farm. There was so much rain it was washing out roads, and they needed to bring out two by fours to get the bus, and the people, out of the mud. Thankfully they did finally get out of the mud, and back to the ship.

We had a nice relaxed evening on The Flora and were treated to a slide show of pictures, taken by the naturalists, of our group, which they shared with each of us the next morning. Sunday morning The Flora headed back to Baltra Island, and we headed to the airport. It was time to say goodbye to the wonderful crew of The Flora. Of course, Captain Patricio who I have written about. But then the ship wouldn’t be the same without John Flynn, Hotel Director. From the moment we stepped on board, John was everywhere on the ship. He was always smiling and ready to answer any question someone had. He clearly kept things running superbly. He is an amazing guy. Then Boris Peralta, a Maître D. He is a really nice guy and it was incredible how many of our names he remembered, always greeting me by name. He was smiling at 6:00 am when I went for coffee, and again at the door to the dining room for dinner. Then there was Guillermo, one of the dining room staff. He was charming and also was always smiling. Always ready to bring a coffee, or anything else you needed. As I mentioned in a previous blog, there were nine naturalists on the Flora. They were all great. One who stood out to me, and answered any question I would throw at him, was Sebastian.  Clearly the competence and professionalism of the crew on The Flora, made all the difference to our great week on the ship.

At the airport we all checked in to our chartered flight back to Quito. But there, some of the group, were heading to Peru, and on to Machu Picchu, while many of us would spend another day, or two, in Quito, before heading home. Those of us in Quito had dinner in the hotel, courtesy of Celebrity, and then on Monday, a group of us headed to the botanical gardens. It was a really nice relaxed day. But for me it was an early night, as a group of us were going to meet in the lobby of the hotel at 3:00 am to head to the airport for our 6:00 am flight to Miami, and connection to DC. That will be a separate column as I got bumped from 1 st class on the Miami to DC flight, and am still debating the issue with American Airlines. So far, I have spoken to four people and got four different reasons for being bumped. Not a great look for American. But that small issue, couldn’t stop me from thinking, all-in-all, it was an amazing eleven days in Quito and the Galápagos. I got to spend time with good friends, and meet some wonderful new ones.  I would recommend a trip to the Galápagos to anyone. Darwin was right, it is an amazing place.

Quito and the Galápagos on Celebrity Flora: blog #4

Turtles, iguanas and birds abound

After Floreana Island we continued our tour of the Galápagos with stops first on Isabela Island, and then then the next day we continued to spend some time on a different part of Isabela Island, and then went on to Fernadina Island. Then Friday it was South Plaza and Santa Cruz Islands.

Each day there continued to be morning and afternoon excursions off the Flora. Some involved walking, and some were taking a tender around the Island. The first day on Isabela Island we had the option of a long walk and a short tender ride, or just a tender ride in the morning. They warned everyone it was a very rocky trail. I passed on that, and took the tender ride where we saw some amazing sights. Turtles in the water, hundreds of Iguanas on the rocks, and loads of birds of all kinds. Then it was back to the Flora for lunch and relaxing. We had a great lunch outside on Deck 7 in the Ocean Grill and Bar.  In the afternoon we were given the option of a short walk and swim, or just a short walk. Basically, the same thing. It only mattered as to what time you got on the tender to head back to the ship.  I took the short walk and saw tortoises up close, more Iguanas, various birds, including flamingos. We are seeing many of the same animals on most of the Island walks, but there always seems to be a new one, something a little different, and it has been so much fun. I have some great pictures.

Then it was time for the cocktail of the day; a Margarita, served in the Discovery Lounge on Deck 4. That is the place where we get briefings from naturalists each day, and the place we meet to leave for our excursions. Dinner was at the Seaside restaurant, the indoor dining room, also on deck 4.  Then a lazy evening. They did show a movie in the Discovery Lounge, Life on Fire, about the active volcanos in the Galapagos. There are still five alone on Isabela Island.  It was Valentines Day and to celebrate the pastry chef baked heart shaped cookies. They were really good. I know because I tasted one of each kind. While I haven’t been blown away by the food in general, I think the Executive chef is maybe trying too hard to be different; the pastry and dessert chefs have done a yeoman’s job. Could just be I like sugar.

The next day’s morning options were either a short or long walk, and I did the short one. In the afternoon there was only one option, a tender ride. Then back to the ship for another cocktail of the day. This one called the Yellow Warbler, served again in the Discovery Lounge.  Before dinner there were some games, including a trivia challenge. Then dinner outside in the Ocean Grill and Bar. To eat dinner outside you needed to make a reservation and Mike and Scott did that and ten of us ate together. The evening ended with the option of another movie; Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life. There are TVs in the suites with a number of options, and if you are into the news like I am, they had the usual Celebrity channels available; FOX, MSNBC, and the BBC.

Friday dawned clear and the options were a short or long walk. This was to be a dry landing which meant you could step onto shore without getting your shoes wet. But it was not an easy walk as you were on some volcanic rock, and uneven paths. I decided to take a sea day, and stayed on the ship. I used the time to do some writing, including starting this blog, interviewing the Captain, and to relax with some friends who decided to do the same. We had lunch in the indoor dining room where they served a meal which they called Asian inspired. Some sushi and other dishes. The afternoon choices for those who wanted to head out were; a long fast-paced fitness walk, or a short walk. We did pass Daphne Major Island, and a naturalist told us about it. We could see it from our balconies on the Port side, or from deck 7 or 8. I headed to deck 7.

Then for those of us traveling with Scott and Dustin of My Lux Cruise , we got a reminder of our transatlantic cruises. They hosted a 6:15pm cocktail party in their suite. They do this regularly on the longer cruises. They had a great spread and a bartender. It was fun. Then the crew of the Flora wanted to pretend they were a bigger ship, and announced a ‘silent disco’ party in the Discovery Lounge at 9:00pm.  I was surprised at the silent disco as it didn’t seem to fit the Galapagos. But to be fair, there were many who did enjoy it.

Now our last full day in the Galapagos will be tomorrow, Saturday, and it will be different. I will share that in my final blog, so hope you will keep reading them.

D.C. Travel and Adventure Show to highlight LGBTQ travel

Event to take place at Walter E. Washington Convention Center this weekend

puerto vallarta day excursions

This weekend D.C. welcomes travel enthusiasts and adventure seekers looking to find their next destination. The ticketed event is open to travel professionals and consumers alike. It’s the first time the event comes to the nation’s capital.

One may wonder why LGBTQ travelers need a pavilion of their own. Ed Salvato, a consultant for the organization hosting the event, is a travel professional who is an educator in tourism, hospitality and marketing at New York University recently spoke with the Washington Blade.

“Vendors, suppliers, destinations, marketing companies, airline marketing companies, etc. when they think of travelers the image that probably comes to mind is heterosexual couples. Maybe 1.5 kids,” Salvato said. “Most likely able-bodied, and maybe white.”

Gay travelers, however, may feel compelled to ask, “Will I be comfortable with my same-sex partner at your resort, destination, venue? Or “I’m traveling with my same-sex Latino partner and he’s a little younger, and will he be welcome at your resort?”

“The idea you know that, if I send an email or ask that the response can come across as defensive, ‘Oh, everyone is welcome here,’” explained Salvato.

Many community members may be familiar with this response. Many also may not have found the response to be true. A city or destination may come off as being liberal due to its politics. But what about that particular hotel you booked in the next town over?

“It should be, ‘Oh, everyone is welcome here! What are your needs and concerns? What can we do to make you feel comfortable?’ That to me makes me want to visit the destination,” Salvato said.

The point of the pavilion can go larger than just LGBTQ individuals. It also reflects the diversity, equity and inclusion of other individuals.

puerto vallarta day excursions

“In reality,” Salvato says, “everyone travels with unique characteristics, some hidden, some not so hidden. Two Black travelers, a traveler in a wheelchair, solo women. A family coming up to me and asking where they can go for a family reunion which includes a bi-racial lesbian couple. A grandmother wanting to send her son and his husband on safari, where will they be safe and welcome? That kind of thing.”

There is also the stereotype of the gay couple being rich, white, living in an elite neighborhood in a city, and traveling frequently.

“But that’s not really the case. We’ve got a lot of ‘Chuck and Bobs’ out there. Let’s say, Chuck is an accountant, Bob is a public school principal, they live in Jersey somewhere, almost all their neighbors are straight, they may have a child they adopted together. Where can they go as a family on their vacation and feel comfortable?”

The LGBTQ pavilion will be an inclusive space. But, of course, Salvato expects there’s going to be a touch of whimsy for which our community is known.

“At a recent event, we had three bears promoting an event in Fort Lauderdale. A really cool bear event.”

As Salvato earlier explained he once saw camels as part of a vendor display and photo opportunity, this reporter was confused.

Trained bears! Indoors?

“No. Members of the gay, male bear community.”

Félix Alcaraz Vellisca, the consul for Tourism Affairs with the Tourism Office of Spain, explained why the country is consistently ranked one of the best international destinations for LGBTQ tourists.

“Spain is already widely known as one of the most LGBTQ-friendly destinations on the planet, but it is important to continue communicating and explaining this to all our potential visitors. Spain is a very diverse and heterogeneous country but sometimes,” he explained. “LGBTQ travelers know only the most important spots. But we want to gradually publicize other destinations that may be interesting for LGBTQ travelers. In any case, we are happy to know the extremely positive perception that all LGBTQ travelers have of our country and the desire they have to visit us. And that’s why we will be at the D.C. Show, to help travelers to fulfill their wishes.”

Vellisca, and his organization, are also using this appearance at the pavilion to celebrate the 2026 Gay Games, which are being held in Valencia.

“The audience comes largely from the United States,” he said. “We also want to be there to communicate this event and provide information about it.”

Vellisca’s booth will also entice guests to come experience Spain through a raffle of Spanish gastronomy.

puerto vallarta day excursions

Of course, there are also destinations which are normally welcoming centers for the community. One state in particular which some LGBTQ travelers may be wary of heading due to some recent press: Florida, which has come under scrutiny due to the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

Many would-be tourists have stated they wouldn’t spend their travel dollars in the Sunshine State. But that’s a blanket statement that will potentially harm gay-friendly destinations and gay-owned businesses. Towns like Wilton Manors, adjacent to Fort Lauderdale, and Key West come to mind known as they are for gay guest houses, nightclubs and dining options.

Michelle Pirre, who represents the Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention and Visitors Bureau, will not be at the D.C. event but was at a recent New York event representing Florida’s West Coast.

“The NYC Travel Pavilion was amazing and well planned! While thousands came by our booth, we spoke directly to over 1,000 LGBTQ attendees with a genuine interest in our area,” she stated.

Clearly she wants gay travelers to realize her destination is and continues to be welcoming.

“We collected hundreds of names for our newsletters, distributed standard visitor guides, LGBTQ guides and so much more collateral from weddings to golf and arts and culture, we had very little leftover. Looking forward to next year,” she said.

Aaron Tabor and his husband David Ardelean, the first gay couple married in Everglades City, Fla., met in Wilton Manors. They found their way back to Tabor’s hometown located near Naples on the Florida Peninsula’s West Coast. They later became stewards of the Parkway Motel and Marina of Chokoloksee, as they are avid outdoorsmen, they were saddened to learn so many LGBTQ tourists were swearing off the Sunshine State due to the controversies coming from Tallahassee.

“Living authentically, we openly invite and affirm all of our guests regardless of their individualisms,” the couple shared. “Political theater can be dramatic sometimes, but this doesn’t need to stand in the way of the enriching travel experiences we offer guests as the gateway to the great southwestern Florida outdoors.”

Their motto is, “Fuss less, fish more!” to entice LGBTQ travelers to still come to Florida they hosted a booth at the New York show. For the D.C. event: Timothy Kelley, the Parkway Motel and Marina Manager will be on site at the booth to explain and engage visitors along with a $200 travel voucher sweepstakes along with some really cool swag give-aways.

This is a ticketed event taking place on Feb. 24-25 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. To learn more, visit TravelShows.com and look under “Shows” to book one or two day tickets to the event.

Whale Watching Adventure - Pretty good tour

I did this trip on the morning of 7 Feb 2024. It was a very late booking, made the night before, when my planned bird watching trip was cancelled. I was just happy to be able to do anything. It was on a pretty big catamaran, with two decks of seating. I chose to sit upstairs, right in the corner at the back. This was really good for getting a view except to the front of the boat. It was also right next to a speaker, and they do play music quite loud at times! You leave Nuevo Vallarta just as dawn breaks. So watch out for some nice views of the sun rising above the mountains. We picked up more passengers at Puerto Vallarta, so you do spend almost an hour of the tour commuting between Nuevo and Puerto, and back again. Compared to the rib excursion I did the day before, it is obviously a lot bigger, with plenty of room to walk around. There are toilets on board, and a bar. They have food - bread rolls with ham, cheese and vegetables. It is more stable, so you are less likely to suffer from sea sickness. And it is a lot more sociable - you can easily talk to other people. The downside is that it isn't as fast getting to the whales, and when you do get there you can't get as close. And it is harder to take photos - there are more people in the way, and you are looking down onto the whales. We saw quite a few whales, but they were not in a playful mood. So no breaching. But we did see some dolphins Of the three trips I did, it was the only one where you could hear the whales when they dropped a hydrophone. You do get birds following the boat, especially closer to shore. This included gulls, pelicans, brown boobies and blue-footed boobies. The crew put on a show on the way back to Puerto Vallarta. I didn't get to see it - I was too busy chatting to other people. Personally I prefer going on a rib. But I think this might appeal more to families, or when someone is not sure about being on a small boat.

Danny is the best! We had a wonderful time. Danny took care of us during each adventure. Made sure we we informed, safe, and happy.

puerto vallarta day excursions

We had an awesome time. This was my 3rd Zip line tour in Puerta Vallarta and I believe it was the most exhilarating. The staff of Adrian, Hector, Angel, Lucero Alfredo, Gero, Carlos and David were awesome. They seem to really love their jobs. They also are very safety conscious as they were always checking over the equipment we were using making sure we were safe at all times. This tour offered many different challenges. We were torn between the Superman and the roller coaster for zip line favorites. But the skydiving simulator was also an amazing experience. Thank you to the staff for a great tour.

I can't even describe how amazing this experience was! The whole crew was amazing! Especially Pollo, Charly, and Jay were great!

Charly and his team were incredible!! Best bang for your buck extreme adventure. Didn’t know what we were getting into, but everyone made us feel right at home. Almost like family

Omg this was beyond one of the best excursions I have ever participated in! Charly was friendly and kept everyone together from start to finish. I felt safe and enjoyed every aspect of this EXTREME experience. The staff that was there to help Charly: Pam, Joss, Geto, Aldo, Robert, Alfredo, Jacob, Mike, & Apollo were all so lovely and wonderful! They helped make this experience for myself and other guests so amazing! I could not have spent my time with a better group of guides and activities! Thank you all so much for a great time.

Here are 3 cheap Mexico vacations flying out of Dallas/Fort Worth. Grab your passport

W ith the recent spikes in the cost of going on vacation, traveling can feel like a luxury. Mexico offers an affordable option for all-inclusive family trips. Why spend $10,000 going to Hawaii when you can say hola to Mexico for half the price?

Alyssa Maisano, a travel advisor in Fort Worth who specializes in Mexico resort vacations , recommends all-inclusive vacation packages to get the most for your money. For a standard family of five, she said a vacation including flights, and an all-inclusive resort package for five to seven nights would cost an estimated $4,500.

Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Costa Mujeres are the family friendly places to be. Cabo? Not so much, she said, “It’s mainly more adults going there.”

Planning a trip for your family is guaranteed to put everyone in a better mood.

“I mean [vacations] nowadays ... It’s really like a luxury — people need that though. They need a vacation, for their family, for their memories, for their mental health.”

Hidden gems to unearth for your Mexican holiday

Masiano is an expert in planning Mexico vacations. She has a few tricks up her sleeve that she likes to call hidden gems.

Spirit’s bread-and-butter is flights to Mexico. “If you can’t get in one flight, they’re constantly going out of DFW and Spirit is always going to Cancun. The risk you take with other airlines is they never have as many, you know, flights during the day.” However keep in mind that carry-on baggage will cost you.

For Cancun, the Riviera Maya is a hotel Masiano recommends over and over.

Other tried-and-true hotel options are Riu Hotels, Sandos Resorts, Iberostar Resorts, and Grand Palladium Hotels.

All inclusive is the most affordable option.

Cruises have also been deemed to be popular among families . Maisano suggests Mexico cruises that leave from Galveston, Texas.

Three affordable Mexican vacation destinations

Cancun has been the recent family favorite. The white sand beaches are the perfect place to let your kiddos soak in the sun all day . Hotels in the hotel zone have their own stretch of the coast that houses private beaches.

You can catch Cancun on a good day year round due to the average temperature being 78 degrees. In summer, temperature rises to the 90s.

Spirit offers nonstop flights from $400- $500, considering extra cost for baggage. Dallas/Fort Worth Airport (DFW) to Cancun Airport (CUN)

Puerto Vallarta has golden yellow sand and turquoise waters . Located on the West Coast of Mexico, Puerto Vallarta is known for its Pacific ocean beaches and water sports.

Best time to visit is between April and June, when temperatures average 88 degrees.

You can find a non-stop flight around $500, from DFW to Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVR)

Connecting flights are cheaper ranging from $300-$500.

Lastly, Costa Mujeres is just north of Cancun with more of a jungle flair . This location is more tranquil being thirty minutes away from any nightlife. Golfing, spas, and beach days are ideal activities for the recent must-visit Mexico vacation location.

The cooler jungle-like environs is lovely with temperatures averaging 82 degrees year round.

The flights would also be to Cancun, then hotel shuttles from the airport to the hotel which takes a little under an hour.
