Planning a Michigan Brewery Tour

On this page you'll find out all about planning an exciting Michigan brewery tour (we recommend traveling with Party Bus Detroit ) and you can find out more about individual breweries via the links on your left hand side. There's never been a better time to go on a Michigan beer tour! Here's all the info you need.

Tour Michigan Breweries

As you well know, the do-it-yourself, handcrafted, and locally made trend is much more than just a passing fad, and Michigan's breweries and microbreweries are evidence of that! People love to support local businesses, and when that involves drinking delicious beers, it's even better! We've got the second oldest brewery in America right here in Frankenmuth, and on the other hand we've got some of the newest and most exciting ones too. Why not try them all?

There are so many beer lovers that are only just now discovering the variety that is really out there, and whether you're one of those newbies or someone who knows their lagers from their IPAs and then some, we just know that you will love heading out on a Michigan brewery tour! We strongly recommend Party Bus Detroit, because we have personally done business with them many times in the past and they are by far the best company in Detroit for this type of trip. True professionals in every way. We can't recommend them enough.

Frankenmuth - Tour Michigan Breweries

It's true that you could head out on your own with a bunch of friends and visit several breweries in the state, but who wants to be the designated driver on that trip? Who really wants to miss out on tasting all those amazing beers? When you rent a party bus , you not only get to travel far and wide without restrictions, but you also get to continue your party on the bus, bringing beers on board and enjoying yourself! Plus there's audio and video hookups for your entertainment, with high quality sound systems and flat screen TVs galore.

Copper Canyon - Tour Michigan Breweries

By far, some of the best reasons for heading out with a party bus for your brewery tour is that you will never have to concern yourself with the headaches of traffic and parking! We've already covered the fact that Party Bus Detroit 's professional chauffeur will be your designated driver for the evening, but beyond that you'll be dropped off at every door and you'll never have to pay for parking. Great Baraboo - Tour Michigan Breweries

Remember, the above list is centered on the best 15 breweries in and around Detroit, but there are so many more throughout our state. You won't believe the wonderful breweries you'll find in the Flint area, in the Kalamazoo area, in the Traverse City area, and of course in the Upper Peninsula! Our state is chock full of breweries, and if you haven't visited at least a handful of them, you really owe it to yourself to head out and discover them this very year. It's every beer-lover's dream come true! If you've got vacation time coming up, the best idea is to just head out for a multi-day tour of all these amazing breweries.

You'll find that there are subtle and not-so-subtle differences between breweries that really make them stand out from the rest. Some breweries have authentic equipment from Budapest, while others have it imported from Canada, or perhaps made right here in the good ole' USA. Some breweries are just small operations with most of the work taking place visibly behind the bar, while others have a full-on factory behind the scenes. Some are open all week long, and some only open up their tap rooms for a few select days per week. You'll want to take all of this into account when you are planning the multi-day multi-brewery tour of a lifetime!

Bastone - Tour Michigan Breweries

If you're new to the microbrewery scene, you might want to familiarize yourself with the lingo before you go. Allow us to break down the basics for you right here:

  • Hops : The primary flavoring in most beers. Comes from the hops plant. Tastes bitter.
  • ABV : Alcohol By Volume. If you want to know how strong a certain beer is, look for the ABV. A typical American beer is 4-5%. You'll find that most beers you'll encounter during your beer tour are in the 3-15% range.
  • Lager : These are the most popular beers out there, and most of the typical domestic beers like Budweiser and Miller fall into this category. There are light lagers and dark lagers, and the lighter ones tend to have less alcohol, while the darker ones have more flavor from hops and roasted barley.
  • Pilsner : A light-colored lager with European origin.
  • Ale : Ales tend to be lightly carbonated, low in alcohol, and with more of a malty hops flavor.
  • English Bitter : Known as the king of ales.
  • Brown Ale : Tend to have a fruity or nutty flavor.
  • Porter : Darker ale with rich chocolate flavors.
  • Stout : Often considered as a separate category, a stout is technically an ale. Guinness is a great example of a stout, with a dark color, creamy head, and barley flavor.
  • Hefeweizen : A German wheat beer.
  • Belgian/French/Trappist : Higher alcohol content and stronger flavors. Trappist ales are brewed by monks.

It's hard to explain the complexities of beer drinking to someone who has not actually adventured out into the breweries for themselves. Once you have tasted at least a couple of each category that we listed above, you'll begin to understand the nuances of each flavor, and soon you'll find yourself intrigued by everything that is out there just waiting to be discovered. Once you know which category of beer you prefer, you'll know which section of the beer list to head for each time you go out to a microbrewery. And as you get to know all the flavors within it, you'll craft your list of favorites.

Whether you're a newbie or an old hand at the microbrewery scene, we recommend asking for a personal tour of the breweries that you visit. You may want to call in advance to arrange this, because some breweries and microbreweries don't offer tours on the fly. There's nothing quite like meeting the brew masters in person and finding out about their passions for the craft. Seeing the equipment being used is a real thrill, and understanding the amount of work that goes into creating the perfect pint is really a great thing. It can be quite a learning experience to get a personal brewery tour, and to have several of them in one day can be a real adventure!

Some of the breweries on our list also have plenty of space for private events including wedding receptions, so if you have something special coming up in terms of celebrations, you just may want to consider hosting it at a microbrewery. It's delightfully untraditional, and if you and your bride-to-be or groom-to-be both love beer, there's no better way to mark your nuptials than with an exciting indulgence in your favorite beverage! You can learn about some of the newer brews that are out there, or taste some of the oldest and most beloved ones. And your guests will love the experience too.

Corner Brewery - Tour Michigan Breweries

Again, we have to reiterate that the best way to see all of these breweries (or at least a generous handful of them!) is to head out in a party bus courtesy of Party Bus Detroit . You'll certainly want to brings some brews home with you, and you'll be able to do just that thanks to the built-in bars on the buses that are stocked with both ice and cups. If you need extra space, there's plenty of room to bring your own coolers so that you and all your friends can bring hundreds of brewskis home! And best of all, it's perfectly legal to drink on the bus and there's no concern about finding a designated driver. You've never known the joys of having a professional chauffeur until you are traveling to all of Michigan's best breweries...

If you're interested in speaking with someone from Party Bus Detroit about planning your Michigan breweries tour, all you've got to do is head over to their website or give them a call at 248-630-5605. Now, we invite you to view all the pages of our site to find out more about the best breweries in the state. We hope that you find the information here very valuable. Thank you so much for visiting, and have a great brewery trip!

As any beer drinker knows, Michigan has long been ahead of the curve when it comes to craft beer. But what you may not know is that Motor City is having its own craft-beer moment.

In addition to the following 10 breweries—all of which have taprooms where you can sample their beer and make purchases, and many offer food menus, too—two Michigan breweries have opened taprooms in Detroit. Jolly Pumpkin—based out of Ann Arbor— taps its beer in Midtown , also serving pizza, while Founders Brewing Co. (a Grand Rapids brewery) operates a Midtown taproom , with beers exclusive to that location, including its Detroit IPA.

Eastern Market Brewing Co.

Courtesy of Eastern Market Beer

Located in the year-round Eastern Market, this brewery is in perfect pitch with the country’s largest historic public-market district. When co-founder Dayne Bartscht moved back to Michigan from England, he lured in some beer-loving friends to open the brewery in 2017. Many beers fold in local ingredients, including Final Harvest, which has 100 pounds of squash from a local farm, and a beer called Dees Bees Knees, including Detroit City Distillery spirits.

Detroit Beer Co.

One of Detroit’s first craft breweries, Detroit Beer Co. , opened in 2003 and brews on-site at its downtown Detroit taproom where, at any given time, between seven and nine different beers are poured. Ranging from an American light lager (Broadway Light) to a hearty amber ale (Rye Barrel Aged Dwarf), it’s all brewed with food pairings in mind, whether it’s the chorizo-avocado pizza or Hair of the Dog—a burger topped with a fried egg, cheese, and bacon). Saturday and Sunday brunch mean unique eats like smoked-salmon pizza or French toast rolled in Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Granite City Food & Brewery

With locations throughout 13 Midwestern states, Granite City Food & Brewery’s Detroit presence (one of three Michigan locations) is within the Renaissance Center, a block north of the Detroit River and the Riverwalk. Food is crafted in an open kitchen (cue amazing smells!) and the beer (a mix of signature and seasonal options, including Hustle, a coffee cream ale) brewed on site. Locals love the Lawless Brunch with a donut-creation station, build-your-own breakfast sandwiches, and Bloody Mary just to your liking. Still, the dinner specials, which range from meatloaf to jambalaya, are also wildly popular.

Batch Brewing Company

 Courtesy of Batch Brewing Company

Batch Brewing Company’s taproom Corktown taproom serves not only beer but also Michigan pub-style food with a global twist—like jerk-chicken pasties or fried German-style potatoes—with some Vietnamese, Mexican, Greek, and Thai dishes thrown in. Co-founders Jason Williams and Stephen Roginson left corporate jobs to follow their dream, opening the brewery in 2015 after a successful crowdfunding campaign. Around 18 beers are on tap, from a farmhouse ale to the Dicksmasher Stout.

Brew Detroit

Brewing out of Corktown since 2014, Brew Detroit —with its “true to the beer” slogan—operates in a 68,000 square-foot facility. Visit the taproom, which is also home to Michigan’s largest contract brewery, allowing a place for budding brewers to get their start, and you can sample from 30 different taps, indulging in your preference for sours, lagers, ales or stouts. There’s even a nitro-stout option (Cold Brew Detroit). Tours take place every Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. and include a pint of beer in a take-home glass.

Brewery Faisan

Detroit’s newest brewery and taproom debuted in October of this year, in the Islandview neighborhood, just north of the Detroit River. Brewery Faisan’s thrust, in the hands of founders (and former homebrewers) Paul and Rachel Szlaga, is all about brewing Belgian-style beers. This includes a wheat beer, tripel, and raspberry Saison, plus a coffee stout and two IPAs. At any time, seven beers from Brewery Faisan are on tap. Curious about the brewery’s name? It’s a reference to the pheasants that live nearby. (In French, faisan means pheasant.)

Motor City Brewing Works

Courtesy of Motor City Brewing Works

Since 1994—yes, way before many of Detroit’s breweries debuted— Motor City Brewing Works ’ has been in the heart of downtown Detroit. Beer riffs on Detroit neighborhoods and references, such as the Corktown Stout. One of the food menu’s highlights is brick-oven pizza, with 10 specialty pies, like Roasted Pear & Fig or Maui Wowie. On warm days, outdoor seating is available at communal-style picnic tables as well as on the deck.

Woodward Avenue Brewers

Technically in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale, and not the city proper, Woodward Avenue Brewers —which wants you to call it WAB—has been brewing beer since 1997. About 10 beers are on tap at its taproom, or you can opt not to decide which pint to order by going for the Five Beer Sampler (flight of five four-ounce beers). Whether you crave bananas and clove (hallmarks of the Wiezengeist-Hefeweizen) or a Caribbean-inspired stout (what the Aggrovator-Tropical Stout seeks to emulate), this brewery’s got you covered. A food menu of pizza, sandwiches, and pub grub is also served.

Liberty Street Brewing Company

Specializing in small-batch brewing, from light (clementine with lemon thyme) to Starkweather Stout, Liberty Street Brewing Company is in the Detroit suburb of Plymouth. The brewery’s been in business since 2008, and you can sip the beers inside its taproom, tucked into a building dating back to the 1890s. While the food menu is limited, the owners encourage you to support other local restaurants by having your order delivered to the taproom.

Atwater Brewery & Tap House

Courtesy of Atwater Brewery & Tap House

With three Michigan locations—Grand Rapids, the Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe Park, and a 1919 factory warehouse in Detroit’s Rivertown neighborhood—Atwater Brewery’s roots are in Detroit. Beer offerings are diverse, from grapefruit flavors in the Going Steady IPA to Pumpkin Spice Latte Ale. You can even take a tour of the Detroit location on Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Like most breweries, the taproom cuisine skews German and pub-style (like brats, wings, and chili), but there are also signature pizzas and tacos. Try a “dessert beer,” like the Decadent Chocolate Stout or Vanilla Java Porter.

Interior of Grand Rapids taproom

Overlooking our classic brewhouse, our Grand Rapids taproom is a great testing ground for us. On any given day you’ll find a many beers on tap that are only available at the taproom. It’s a laid back former trucking depot that was modeled after a German beer hall, complete with a patio and beer garden. Check out our handcrafted sandwiches, book the Centennial Room for a private Founders experience, or take a tour of the brewery!

Our brewery rental space features a fully-staffed bar with eight taps (including one nitro tap), and groups up to 65 seated with additional space of 45 seats on the patio. It’s on the second story of our facility and has two walls of windows, east and south facing, looking out over the city of Grand Rapids. There is also a two-sided patio that will provide additional space during the warmer months. The room is outfitted with three large flat-screen televisions and a retractable projector screen for PowerPoint or video presentations. There will also be a podium with a microphone for any speeches or group announcements.

Drunks of Antiquity: The Detroit Historic Bar Tour

It’s BACK! The most popular bar tour in Detroit’s history is on the road again. We’ll stop at some of Detroit’s oldest, most notorious and most interesting bars, sharing stories along the way- over a few pints, of course. Picks up in BOTH Ferndale and Detroit.

Runs 7:00PM on Fridays and 6:00PM on Saturdays.

What is this Madness?

Simply speaking, it’s a guided bus tour aboard a cool renovated hand-painted bus that hits three of Detroit’s oldest bars. It’s so much more than that though. It’s a way of life. Come and find out.

Ever since Detroit was a mere French missionary outpost, the city’s history has been entwined with the story of its citizens’ drinking habits.

Countless stories have been shared over a pint, and a majority of the city’s major moments featured alcohol front and center: the early frontier day’s wild revelry, through the bloody freewheeling days of the Purple Gang & National Prohibition and beyond. We’ll stop at some of Detroit’s oldest, most notorious and most interesting bars, sharing stories along the way- over a few pints, of course.

Detroit’s got some serious chops when it comes to drinking history. So let’s go to that bar that’s been around since 1874.

Or that one that predates World War One. Actually, loads of Detroit bars are older than your grandparents, and we’re visiting as many as we can in the limited time we have. Some of them are snazzy; one or two may be a little dive-y–but in the best way possible. We like to keep the stops a secret because we don’t wanna ruin the surprise, but we promise you’ll have a great time. Matter of fact, we guarantee it.

The Details:

This tour runs most Fridays and Saturdays now. The tour is approximately three hours long. Book your tickets using the fancy “book now” button near the top of the page.

Pickups: This tour boards both in Ferndale and Detroit. Choose your pickup location at checkout.

The Ferndale pickup is at 6:15PM on Friday and 5:15PM on Saturday in front of One Eyed Betty’s at 175 W Troy, Ferndale.

The Detroit pickup is at 7:00PM on Friday and 6:00PM on Saturday in front of Checker Bar at 124 Cadillac Square, Detroit.

READ THAT AGAIN:  The pickup time is different on Friday and Saturday tours.  🙂

Refund Policy: We’ll gladly refund your tickets in full 14 days prior to the day of the event. After that, there’s no refunds. Sorry to be so mean about it.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What happens if I miss the bus? Will the bus wait for me if I’m late? If you miss your pickup in Detroit, you can hustle and make the pickup in Ferndale. We can’t hold the bus for you if you’re late, though. Sorry to be so mean about that. There’s a schedule to keep and we want everyone to have a good time.

Can I drink on the bus? Yes, but with great power comes great responsibility. What we mean is take it easy and don’t wear the proverbial lampshade. This is a 21+ tour only. You’re on a starting and stopping bus. No, you can’t pee on the curb. Also, please only bring things with lids; no open cups. Small coolers only, since the big ones are a safety hazard. And it’s just plain illegal to take any open container on or off the bus. Drink on the bus? Sure. At the bar? Absolutely. But no drinks in the no-man’s-land in between the two. It’s the law, dude.

What about food? We are hitting some bars that don’t have a whole lot of food options. We recommend, then, that you fuel up ahead of time and/or bring lots of snacks. Drinking and learning is hard work.

Do the bars take credit cards? Some do, some don’t. It’s probably easiest for everyone if you bring some cash along. It’s quicker anyway, and who doesn’t love making it rain?

What if I can’t show up? Will my friend be able to go instead? Totally. Just let us know ahead of time via [email protected] and we’ll update your tickets with the new name or send them with your printed tickets.

Will you be selling extra seats at the bus? Nope. Sorry. All passes gotta be bought online. There’s a limited number of seats and we want you to have plenty of room – no roof riders no matter how badass that might sound.

What about weather SNAFUs? We live in Michigan. Sometimes Mother Nature likes to throw us a curveball. We keep safety as our highest priority. In case of gnarly weather, you’ll receive an email the day of the event with a raincheck/snowcheck date. If you cannot make the rescheduled date, you’ll get a voucher good for a future tour with us.

PSST! We also offer a  private tour  version of this experience. Reach out to us to book for your group.

We booked a tour with the Detroit bus Company. It was a rainy night but the tour and our guide Maurice made up for the weather. It was fun, informative and we had a blast with the folks on board. If you’re in Detroit, don’t miss this tour to see some of Detroits more interesting watering holes.

Nov 19, 2016 first freezing cold night of the season. Had a great time with Justin and Roland. Would absolutely recommend it to everyone.

Katy – March 7, 2017

This was an amazing evening! Got to discover some hidden jems while taking a tour through the city.

hcancun – October 16, 2017

This bus company is phenomenal! We had a group outing for the Drunks of Antiquity tour and had an absolute blast. I honestly haven’t found anything quite as unique for team outings and found some new bars to take my friends to.

People who complain about it being a “party” bus instead of a history tour: It is well advertised that this is a drinking excursion, as well as a history tour. We definitely received a healthy balance of both.

People who complain who missed the bus: Don’t miss the bus. You’re not the only customers 🙂

I wish I could remember our tour guide and bus drivers’ names, but our tour was back in February 2017. We’re going on the one this Friday AGAIN because we had such a blast the first time around.

I highly recommend this company, especially for team outings! 5 five, 2 thumbs up, high five.

kkarwowska – December 27, 2017

Seriously, whether you are visiting or a local, you MUST take one of their tours!!!!! I did the “Drunks of Antiquity” tour with friends and it was AWESOME!!! The tour guide and driver were SO much fun! I can’t wait until my next visit “home” to try another of their tours.

Tiffany – December 30, 2017

Awesome time with Maurice and Gail! Can’t wait to do it again!

We’re so glad you had an awesome time! Please consider leaving your honest review on Yelp and TripAdvisor too! Honest reviews help our tiny company survive and thrive.

Denice Brown – January 18, 2018

As a lifelong Detroiter, I appreciate the chance to visit bars that have a history! It’s perfect for visitors to the city. And a chance to find a new hangout place! If you get a chance, take it. Fun!

Brenda – January 21, 2018

Our group of 15 had a fantastic time on this tour! The only thing that was problematic was finding parking in Ferndale as we got on at Rosie O’Grady’s (the meters are only for 2 hours…we finally just parked in the back of the Post Office lot and prayed our car wasn’t going to get towed…It didn’t). The tour was great though and we all thoroughly enjoyed the four bars that we went to (don’t want to list the names as I don’t want to ruin the surprise!). If you are looking for a fun night out and have a group of friends, mark this on your calendar to do!

Jon – April 8, 2018

We had a group of 40 and all had a fantastic time. I’ll be booking this again for my corporate event soon. Very, very cool.

Lori Mabee – April 8, 2018

Went on the tour last night and haven’t had that much fun in a long time!! Absolutely worth every cent…plus the mission of this company is outstanding with their Ride for Ride program. Our guide Monique King was phenomenal both informative and funny. Loved this event!

Jan Wellman – April 22, 2018

Six of us took the Drunk tour on Friday April 20, 2018. All of us agreed that it was a wonderfully fun time! Everyone on the bus was there to have fun and join in the party. Monique was our tour guide, and she was great! Histerically funny! Wonderful on the inside also, as we had the opportunity to speak privately with her. I highly recommend taking this tour. In fact, we are going to try to book a private bus in the future…and we will definitely request Monique! Well done, Detroit Bus Company!!

Dan – April 29, 2018

Excellent time.

Pam – May 20, 2018

Our group of 22 chartered a private Drunks of Antiquity Tour. We hit 4 fun, unique spots… definitely Detroit hidden gems. I won’t ruin the surprise by naming any bars here, but we ended the night at a place with some live music which was absolutely perfect for our dancing queens! Special thanks to Harvey, our driver, and Heather, our guide for helping make this night so much fun. I would highly recommended this bar crawl!

Christie – August 24, 2018

There were about 20 of us who did the tour for my birthday. Monique, our tour guide, was fantastic! Hilarious, helpful and informative! Definitely recommend the tour to anyone interested in getting buzzed up, while learning some Detroit history! Thanks again, Monique!!

Doreen M – November 5, 2018

Calvin was a fantastic guide, and fun was had by all. The bars were all staffed well expecting our arrival!

kwel2016 – November 6, 2018

This is the third time I’ve taken this tour and each time was just as much fun. Calvin our guide was very knowledgeable about the Bars and the city of Detroit. The whole experience was a ton of fun! Highly recommend for birthdays and just good group fun. Best Birthday so far!

larpjr – November 19, 2018

This tour was fun I saw 4 bars I would never know even existed. Tour guide was fun and informative all 4 bars were cool, and I like the amount of time we spent at each one! There was a fund raiser at one of the bars for the high school kids and a program for books, the one in Mexican town, and I won the 50/50 raffle, they were so appreciative when I returned the winnings to the charity I almost cried! That made the trip even more fun! There’s a big huge dog at the bar and he was so sweet and cute. The bar with the band was great too. Take this tour, its fun. The bus was really warm and we had bundled up thinking it would be cold but it was hot. Even on a really cold night, Bus driver did and excellent job and bus was in top condition. I think most people are into the ride and the bars, keep the stories very short.

Emma – February 17, 2019

The tour was so much fun! Our guide was Patrick, and he did an amazing job. He was very knowledgeable, fun, and professional. Will definitely do this tour again.

Kristi – March 11, 2019

Ok Debbie Downer here. Don’t get me wrong. This was a blast! Tons of fun! Loved our guide Monique and our fantastic driver (sorry. Forgot his name). Great bus! Great bars! Great history! I just can’t figure out why we needed to get on in Detroit, drive to Ferndale to pick up four people, then drive back to Detroit to finally hit the first bar an hour after the tour started. ??? Five stars otherwise!

Lisa – October 27, 2019

We had a great time Friday on our private Drunks of Antiquity tour to celebrate a milestone birthday with the fabulous Monique as our guide, and the kind Charlie Brown (Larry) as our driver. Great insight into history, great bar stops, lots of fun. And love the Ride for Ride mission that helps children get to school safely. Members of our group will be back for another ride!

Detroit News Staff: 5 things to do while not at the NFL Draft

Detroit — While visiting Michigan's largest city, there are more opportunities than one even has time for. That's why members of our staff, who spend the most time in the city, have gathered recommendations of what to do in Detroit for the NFL Draft.

But first, a bit of history for new visitors.

Detroit is known as the Motor City, but its roots run much deeper. The city was once upon a time called the "Little Paris of the Midwest," attributable to its French colonial era when it was established in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, a French military leader and trader. The area had been known by many names to various Indigenous peoples, including the Waawiiyaataanong, meaning "where the river bends."

By the 1910s, an influx of workers from around the world came to Detroit to work in high-paying factory jobs. They, along with native Detroiters, organized unions to fight against unfair labor practices, and the United Auto Workers union was born. As the 20th century progressed, the shape of the city changed. New neighborhoods sprang up around new factories in outlying communities.

Few know Detroit was the last stop on the Underground Railroad to Canada, where civil rights activist the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his first rendition of his legendary "I Have a Dream" speech, and was home to bootleggers during the Prohibition era. The 1967 uprising was the culmination of decades of institutional racism and entrenched segregation. The crisis is still remembered as the largest civil disturbance of the 20th century in America, which resulted in 43 deaths, hundreds of injuries, almost 1,700 fires, and more than 7,000 arrests.

Still, the city is famous for making great cars and even better music, including Motown, techno and rock. Detroit reps as home of Aretha Franklin, the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, MC5, the Stooges, the White Stripes, Madonna, Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Insane Clown Posse and its own rap style championed by Eminem, Big Sean, J Dilla and Royce Da 5'9, just to name a few.

The city resurrected, but fast-forward to July 2013, and Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. A decade later, the city has undergone a dramatic, unrecognizable transformation. It has also financially recovered with surpluses, and its credit rating returned to investment-grade status earlier this year. Detroit's Mayor Mike Duggan has spent the last year talking about how the draft will be a "re-introduction of Detroit to America" and that he hopes travelers who used to come for "ruin-porn" tours will be surprised to find fewer abandoned spots.

This history is reflected in the present-day bustling distillery and brewing scene, iconic churches, brick roads, monuments, stunning architecture and new factories alongside blighted ones. Take a tour on foot, by bike, by bus or by boat. Here's also Bedrock's field guide in the Draft downtown footprint.

The Spirit of Detroit will undoubtedly be the monument most visitors notice. Currently, it is fitted with a Honolulu Blue Lions jersey, but we encourage visitors to look above it to notice the seals encrusted on Detroit's City Hall where two Latin mottos read Speramus Meliora and Resurget Cineribus, meaning "We hope for better things" and "It will rise from the ashes," which was written by Fr. Gabriel Richard after the Great Fire of 1805.

5 must-see institutions

Take the QLine from the NFL Draft footprint to Midtown's Cultural Center. Stepping off Woodward, these are the institutions we encourage visitors to check out:

  • Detroit Institute of Arts and Michigan Science Center (for kids)
  • Detroit Historical Museum
  • Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History
  • Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit
  • Detroit Public Library Main Branch

Louis Aguliar (Wayne County reporter on where to take selfies)

  • So many downtown riverfront places, including Windsor, Canada . Many places along downtown Detroit's Riverwalk are enjoyable. Beyond downtown, great backdrops can be found at Riverside Park, 3085 W. Jefferson Ave., in southwest Detroit. The park is in the shadow of the Ambassador Bridge , and it gives the park a Brooklyn-type vibe. But my advice is to flee to Canada if you have the time. Take the Detroit-Windsor Tunne l next to the GM Renaissance Center, or the Ambassador Bridge, and you'll end up in Windsor. A few minutes away from both is Windsor Riverside park on Riverside Drive.  It's a fabulous skyline shot of downtown Detroit.
  • Monument to Joe Louis , AKA "The Fist," intersection of Woodward and Jefferson avenues, downtown.  Detroit is a legendary tough town; may as well pose next to a huge bronze sculpture of a fist.
  • Cafe D'Mongo's Speakeasy , 1439 Griswold St., in downtown's Capitol Park.  An eccentric little place owned by Larry Mongo, a man so charming he ended up in the Ryan Gosling-directed film "Lost River." (Gosling became a D'Mongo's patron while filming in The D).  In the early '90s, the place was known as Wax Fruit Rhythm Cafe, where a young Kid Rock spun records on Thursday nights. Reporter Sarah Rahal seconds this choice, recommending everyone try the "White Boy Rick " grilled cheese sandwich. Also, not a place for those that avoid tight spaces but great for live music.
  • Detroit Industry Murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts , 5200 Woodward Ave., in Midtown. An auto factory will never look more colorful and poetic than the one depicted in Mexican muralist Diego Rivera's homage to Detroit.  The murals fill a big, sunlit courtyard at the heart of the museum and are priceless.
  • The former Stanley Hong's Mannia Cafe , 265 E. Baltimore Ave., New Center/Milwaukee Junction.  Designed by pioneering Black architect Nathan Johnson, the building is a former Chinese restaurant and still has loopy "Googie-style" allure. The building has been empty far too long — a common plight of Detroit buildings. The place has a music history, too.  A young Eminem participated in rap battles during hip-hip shows here in the '90s. Honorable mention: The new Detroit sign on Interstate 94 between Central and Cecil Avenues. Police say, "Don't stop on the highway to take selfies, travel to the left side across the service drive for the best view.

Rod Beard (Sports editor who loves neighborhood vibes)

  • Belle Isle: It's a hidden gem in plain sight in the city, highlighted by the serenity and calm of a morning walk on the small 2.5-mile island between Detroit and Canada. With a golf course, beach and plenty of places for a small cookout, Belle Isle is a must-see.
  • Palmer Woods neighborhood: With all the attention that some of Detroit's decaying neighborhoods have gotten, Palmer Woods is a shining locale of about 300 sprawling and picturesque homes and estates. There's private security that patrols the neighborhood, but a leisurely drive-through is worth your time.
  • Mexicantown: If you like good food — and who doesn't? — make a visit to almost any of the outstanding restaurants in the area.
  • Corner Ballpark : Detroit's PAL Stadium will serve as the hub of all youth activities at the draft and will be an extension of the activities at the main draft site at Hart Plaza and Campus Martius park. The Park is the former site of Tiger Stadium, longtime home of the Detroit Tigers.
  • Bike, skate, ride down the Dequindre Cut. Equipment is available for rent at Wheelhouse Detroit . Or get active at Lexis Velodrome : This cycling, skating and fitness center has everything.

Melody Baetens (Restaurant critic, who has a separate list for food recs)

  • Third Man Records: There’s no centralized one-stop-shop for Detroit’s rock and roll history, but Jack White’s Third Man Records store, venue and pressing plant is a must-visit for anyone who loves rock, punk, garage and soul, not to mention vinyl, books and apparel. They give scheduled tours of the state-of-the-art vinyl pressing plant on Fridays, and Japanese rock trio TsuShiMaMiRe is set to perform there Thursday night. 441 W. Canfield, Detroit. (313) 209-5250. thirdmanrecords.com/pages/detroit-store .
  • Eastern Market: A food-lovers’ paradise, this is where many of the great dishes you’ll find in restaurants around the city start with ingredients purchased at this historic marketplace. Eastern Market is also home to colorful murals, shops and a fantastic array of bars and restaurants, including Detroit City Distillery, Cutter’s Bar & Grill (get the burger or the steak tips) and Bert’s Marketplace, home to live comedy, jazz, barbecue and pizza. Saturday’s market is open year-round with more than 200 vendors 6 a.m.-4 p.m. easternmarket.org .
  • Motown Museum: A must-visit for music fans of any music genre as well as history buffs. It's small now but an expansion is in the works. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. 2648 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit. (313) 875-2264. motownmuseum.org .
  • John K. King Used Books: Get lost in the sights, smells and textures of this massive, quiet, four-story book store. If you’re looking for something specific among the 1 million titles they have, good luck finding it (kidding, just ask a staff member). It’s more fun to pick a direction and find a treasure you never knew you needed. Closed Sundays. 901 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit. (313) 961-0622. johnkingbooksdetroit.com .
  • Feather bowling: The Cadieux Cafe bar, restaurant and music venue is a little slice of Europe on Detroit’s east side. The historic spot has changed hands a few times throughout the decades, but it’s always been a place for authentic Belgian food, beer and the unique sport of feather bowling. Players roll what look like wooden cheese wheels down a sandy lane, each one hoping to get closest to a single feather. Call ahead to rent a lane in advance if you want to play, or just show up and enjoy live blues, classic rock or jazz. Be sure to stay for dinner where the house specialties are the Belgian onion soup, mussels forte dei marmi and Sander’s cream puff sundae for dessert. 4300 Cadieux, Detroit. (313) 882-8560. Cadieuxcafe.com .

  • Lafayette vs. American Coney Islands: Right near Campus Martius, stumble upon America's first Coney Island and its next-door rival. The chili recipes, key to the Coney dog, differ: American makes its own chili, which is said to be spicier than the beefier chili of Lafayette, made from a family recipe. The dispute has been featured on several food television shows, including "Food Wars" and "Man v. Food." Graham prefers Lafayette. Both classic Detroit coney spots are open late, and the later you go, the better the experience. 118 W. Lafayette Blvd.

Sarah Rahal (city reporter wants you to see everything, especially Detroit's borders)

  • Downtown architecture tour . Step inside the orange Guardian Building, One Campus Martius, which has the "Waiting" by Kaws statue outside and one of Michigan's largest indoor fountains inside. Visit Grand Circus Park where there’s the Russel A. Alger Fountain and Millenium Bell. Hop on the QLine to Campus Martius' Michigan Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Keep walking and you'll see the Spirit of Detroit and the Joe Louis "Fist." Cross to Hart Plaza and see the large circular figure known as "Trancending," a tribute to Detroit's labor union history. Closer to the convention center, there's the new MLK statue and closer to the river, there's a statue memorial to the Underground Railroad pointing to Canada. The Fisher Building in New Center is also known as Detroit's largest art object, a 440-foot tower by legendary architect Albert Kahn.
  • Tour Detroit's street art. The city has one of the largest collections of blight turned to beauty with murals on abandoned and commercial buildings. The best places to see this are Eastern Market, Grand River Creative Corridor standing out with nearly 100 murals between Rosa Parks Boulevard and Warren Avenue, the Library Street Collective and Heidelberg Project, 3600 Heidelberg St., Detroit. Download the CANVS app to track murals and learn more about them.
  • Classic and new brands: Flagship stores for Carhartt and Shinola are right in Midtown, or there's the Shinola Hotel near the theater district. No one should leave Detroit without a trunk full of Vernors, Faygo, Better Made Chips and Sanders Bumpy Cake. Find these at any local grocery. Newer dessert staples include trying Bon Bon Bon, Sister Pie and a Hummer Cocktail or Boston Cooler, which accidentally became Detroit classics. I like Mercury Burger Bar for both.
  • Fowling Warehouse: It's not a typo. It's football and bowling. Grab a team and enjoy this easy game founded here. For $15, it's all you can play from 4 p.m. to midnight. Watch a video of it . Located at 3901 Christopher St., Hamtramck.
  • Outside Detroit, but only by 15 minutes. Visit Dearborn. One of the biggest concentrations of Arab Americans in the nation and home to automotive pioneer Henry Ford and Ford Motor Co. Visiting the Arab American National Museum, Greenfield Village, Henry Ford's Automobile Museum and grabbing a shawarma from Hamidos are non-negotiable.

Honorable mentions from other staff members included:

  • Next Level by RollerCade  at 1201 Woodward Ave.
  • Tie Dye something at Detroit Dye House in Corktown.
  • Visit the historic Masonic Temple, which also has events this week .
  • For children, GEOcaching is a scavenger hunt for random objects and the city is still a great place to look for Pokemon.

Three New Legends Coming to the Plaza!

On Saturday, April 20, three Detroit legends cast their hand in cement live at the Detroit Historical Museum as part of the annual City of Champions Day celebration.

Greg Kelser, sports analyst and Detroit Pistons broadcaster, Huel Perkins, Emmy Award-Winning former Fox 2 news anchor, and Mickey Redmond, Detroit Red Wings color commentator set their hands and signatures into wet cement in front of museum visitors in the Streets of Old Detroit. The day also included a live podcast from the museum's auditorium and a historical presentation by Detroit Historical Society Director of Collections Jeremy Dimick on the significance of the 1935-36 season, when all of Detroit's major sports teams won championships.

The three sets of handprints will be the newest additions to the museum's Legends Plaza , a local "walk of fame" that honors notable Detroiters. They'll be unveiled at our May 11 Detroit Historical Society Ball - and you can join us to celebate! Mingle with some of Detroit’s brightest stars and enjoy a special ceremony honoring this year’s Detroit Legends. The festive evening will also feature a strolling dinner, open bar, silent auction, historical actors, and live entertainment. Find more information and buy tickets here !

Detroit lions | nfl draft has been on tour for a decade and the next stop is detroit, giving it a shot in spotlight.

Detroit cityscape

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.

Detroit is on the clock.

Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.

A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.

In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.

Detroit cityscape

With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.

Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.

The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.

“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”

That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.

After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.

Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.

“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”

Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.

One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.

Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.

“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”

There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.

“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.

Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.

“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.
