The incredibly funny tongue-in-cheek comedian from Crawley
Known for his trademark cynicism, Romesh Ranganathan is one of the UK’s most popular TV presenters and comics. He was born in West Sussex in 1978 as Jonathan Romesh Ranganathan and took an unusual route to stardom – via rapping and teaching.
After delivering his first ever stand-up set at the age of nine at a holiday camp talent competition, Ranganthan spent his teen years focused on becoming a hip hop artist with the moniker “Ranga”. Ultimately, he became a maths teacher and worked for many years at a school in Crawley, where he met his wife Leesa, who taught drama. They married in 2009 and around that time, Ranganathan found his way back to comedy by doing gigs in pubs as a hobby.

Romesh Ranganathan and Natasia Demetriou cast in 1984
New audio version starring Andrew Garfield
Romesh Ranganathan and Natasia Demetriou have been cast in a new audio adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984.
The pair play Mr and Mrs Parsons, neighbours of the dystopian novel’s protagonist Winston Smith. Smith despises Parsons, who is also his co-worker at the Ministry of Truth, for his unquestioning acceptance of everything the Party tells him.
Andrew Garfield leads the cast as as Winston in the adaptation made for Audible, with Cynthia Erivo as Julia, his lover and another colleague at the Ministry. Tom Hardy voices the infamous Big Brother.
The cast also features Chukwudi Iwuji as Charrington, Francesca Mills as Syme, Katie Leung as Ling, Alex Lawther as Ampleforth alongside a full ensemble.
Garfield said: ‘I’m very grateful to Audible to be a part of this new incarnation of Orwell’s radical, political classic, 1984. A classic that, disappointingly, humanity seems to need to be constantly engaged with. To keep ourselves awake and remembering that we each have a soul.
‘And that that soul is full of beauty and value. And how vital it is for each of us to resist the forces that wish to subdue and strangle that collective soul.
‘The cast and crew is clearly the best of the best of British and Irish talent. It was truly a joy to tell this story for an audience hungry for their own liberation.’
The adaptation has been officially authorised and endorsed by the Orwell Estate with Richard Blair, George Orwell’s son, calling it ‘sensational’ with a ‘brilliant cast’
George Orwell’s 1984, an Audible Original, releases globally today, exactly 40 years after the date of Winston’s first diary entry.

Listen to audio teasers from George Orwell’s 1984
Audible’s adaptation of Orwell’s classic captures all of the intensity and human drama of the novel in an immersive new format. Hear clips from the A-list cast below, and explore our series of articles about 1984’s insights for life in 2024
Listen to them being listened to. The hushed tones and the panic in their voices. The horror and forced joyfulness. The performative devotion to Big Brother. Audible’s all-star dramatisation of George Orwell’s 1984 takes one of the most vivid fictional nightmares of our age and turns it into something uniquely evocative.
Here are some clips from the new audio production, featuring a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Andrew Garfield, Cynthia Erivo, Andrew Scott and Tom Hardy. As you listen to them, you’ll likely be struck by the similarities between the world that Orwell imagined and the world we live in today. So beneath the audio clips, we introduce a special series of articles exploring the insights that 1984 holds for life in 2024.

How the hellscape fits together
Introducing a series of articles about why we need Orwell’s classic more than ever
1984 as you have never experienced it before. If only that sentence was just a slogan. Or a sales pitch. Just a tagline for a haunting new dramatisation of our era’s defining work of fiction.
And if only 1984 was merely that – just a work of fiction and not some mystical post-truth prophecy. If only each generation didn’t have to experience a whole new aspect of the hellscape George Orwell foresaw.
Today, it’s the turn of the content-generating machines housed inside 1984’s Ministry of Truth. Their output of automatically-generated songs, novels and pornography is a logical extension of the Ministry’s vast apparatus for churning out fake news.
But whether it’s machine-generated content or the two-way telescreens that snoop on their audience, the prescience of 1984 is only part of the story. As well as being a crystal ball, 1984 is also a map. And not some surveillance-era satnav or geolocation tracker app, but the kind of map that shows you how the whole hellscape fits together.
The content-generating machines in the Ministry of Truth might seem spot-on in today’s world of deepfakes and generative AI, but their role in the bigger scheme of things is even more revealing. When the Party needs a fresh public frenzy of “fear, hatred and lunatic credulity”, the machines generate new baddies in old stories at pace and scale.
They are hate-generating machines, and they work in unison with other elements and concepts in 1984, such as the Thought Police, the censorship and mass surveillance, the unpersoning, the shrinking of language, the stirring up of nationalism as a means of control, and the “doublethink” that destabilises the whole notion of truth.
1984 gives us a more intuitive feel for how all these different elements are interdependent, as if designed to operate in service of each other. It can thereby give us a better feel for how the different parts of our own dystopia might interrelate – how to better navigate the fake news and disinformation, the jargon, the hate-stoking, and our own cognitive biases.
In the following articles, we look at how 1984 can give us a more instinctive grasp of the wider mechanics and post-truth machinations at play today:
Ignorance ain’t strength: what 1984 tells us about fake news – and how to resist it .
Surveillance states: has living under watch changed the way we act, speak and think?
At war with ourselves: 1984 and the struggle against our digital demons .
Trolling and digital pile-ons: have we created our own version of 1984’s Two Minutes Hate?
Disruptive thought leadership: how to decode Orwellian newspeak in 2024 .
Coming soon: Sonic immersion: rock star Matthew Bellamy and composer Ilan Eshkeri on their score and soundscape for the new dramatisation.
Coming soon: ‘Love is dangerous’: what 1984 can teach us about sex, pain and fear.
Are you a blagger or in the Brotherhood? Take our quiz to test your knowledge of Orwell’s dystopian classic .

The Assembly
10.40pm, bbc one.
“No subject is out of bounds, no question is off the table … and all might happen.” These are the simple rules of The Assembly, where 35 autistic and neurodivergent interviewers come together to grill terrified film and TV star Michael Sheen as part of Autism Acceptance Week. He has every right to be scared; they really get the skinny with brilliant questions such as: “How does it feel to be dating someone who is only five years older than your daughter?” and “Was John Taylor from Duran Duran your first ever crush?” Sure, it’s an odd concept, but it makes for one of the most pressing, candid and hilarious celebrity conversations that’s aired in years. Hollie Richardson
Travel Man: 48 Hours in Prague
8.35pm, channel 4.
Watching the velvet-voiced Joe Lycett bash his way around Prague would’ve been good enough, but the addition of podcaster Adam Buxton is alchemical magic. Wearing a combination of Millets outdoors garb and fetishwear, they kayak their way through the stag-do capital of the world, feasting on stodgy goodies and partaking in a little street art. Kayleigh Dray
Pilgrimage: The Road Through North Wales
9pm, bbc two.
The celebrity pilgrims are halfway through their genuinely enlightening journey across Wales. Among many emotional moments, Spencer Matthews reflects on how the death of his brother brought out his spiritual side. HR
Susan Calman’s Great British Cities
9pm, channel 5.
Calman’s breezy tour finds her on familiar turf as she returns to Glasgow – her home city and the place where she studied law before showbiz beckoned. The highlight is her exploration of the pioneering life of Madge Easton Anderson, the first woman in the UK to practise as a professional lawyer. Phil Harrison
9.30pm, BBC One
Romesh Ranganathan returns with his family comedy, and newly single Jonathan (Ranganathan) decides he wants ex Claire (Jessica Knappett) back. While his new penchant for cycling Lycra isn’t about to win her over, Megan (Aisling Bea) provides an approving eye in the park. HR
Helgoland 513
10pm, sky atlantic.
TV isn’t short of dramas about dystopias and despots, but there’s something extra chilling about this German take on the genre, and the cinematic direction of Robert Schwentke really sets the mood. This week, Ewelike’s wife Kaisolochukwu is hoping to nab an open spot on the island. Ellen E Jones

Steve! (Martin): a Documentary in 2 Pieces (Morgan Neville, 2024) Apple TV+
Having been in the public eye for so long as an actor, it’s a surprise to realise that, back in the late 70s, Steve Martin was the first comic to sell out stadiums and earn platinum albums. Part one of Morgan Neville’s engrossing dive into Martin’s career traces his decade-long rise to fame, and illuminates just how odd his act was: a cross between a magic show, children’s entertainment and dadaist happening where laughing was optional. Martin waited patiently for the audience to catch up; when they did, he quit to make movies. Part two shows us Martin now, riffing with best mate Martin Short and reminiscing about his art collection, banjo playing and hard-to-please father. Simon Wardell
Girls State (Amanda McBaine & Jesse Moss, 2024) Apple TV+
Boys State was a fascinating 2020 documentary, in which 1,000 17-year-old Texas boys spent a week creating a fictional state government and running a gubernatorial campaign. Now comes the female version, this time in Missouri, where the rumoured overturning of Roe v Wade adds a frisson to the coming together of a politically diverse group of engaged, articulate teenagers. Female empowerment is a central concern – especially when the boys creating their own state nearby seem to be getting more to do. SW
