Wells Fargo introduces Autograph Journey Credit Card with standout travel rewards

stevenage travel card

Today, Wells Fargo announced a new travel credit card to compete with mid-tier offerings from other major banks. The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card will offer impressive rewards on travel and dining purchases, along with flexible redemption options.

New Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card details

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey card, which carries a $95 annual fee, will be available in select Wells Fargo branches on March 9 and nationwide on March 20. Here’s a quick summary of what it will offer. For more info check out our review of the Autograph Journey card.

New cardholders will earn 60,000 bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months.

On everyday spending, the card offers 5X points on hotels, 4X points on airlines, 3X points on other travel and dining, and 1X points on other purchases. Note that the rewards rates include direct booking options, meaning you can use your hotel status benefits. This puts the 5X rate as best-in-class.

Redemption options include travel, gift cards, statement credits, and online shopping through PayPal, all at a rate of 1 cent per point. Additionally, the card issuer allows you to transfer your points to select partners, including:

  • Choice Privileges
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Iberia Plus

The points transfer feature will be available on April 4, with more partners to be added throughout the year. Transfer ratios are 1:1 for most partners, with Choice Privileges offering a ratio of 1:2. Points transfer  will also be accessible to Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card holders, and you don’t have to hold the Journey to be able to transfer points with the Autograph.

Other card benefits

  • $50 annual statement credit for airfare purchases (minimum purchase of $50 required)
  • Up to $15,000 in trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Up to $3,000 in lost baggage reimbursement
  • Up to $1,000 in cell phone protection ($25 deductible)
  • Up to $1 million in travel accident insurance
  • Secondary auto rental collision damage waiver
  • No foreign transaction fees

Should you apply for the new Wells Fargo travel credit card?

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card can be a great fit for people who spend a lot on travel and dining. While similar cards also offer high rewards rates on select travel purchases, they often require you to use the card issuer’s travel portal to qualify for them. The $50 annual statement credit for airfare purchases is also easy to use as you get it by booking directly through any airline.

That said, the card doesn’t offer bonus rewards on other everyday spending categories, and its base rewards rate is just 1 point per dollar. Some other mid-tier travel cards also offer bonus rewards on things like groceries, gas, and streaming services. You could even get a high rewards rate on all of your purchases.

If you’re planning to apply for the Autograph Journey Visa Card, keep in mind that the card issuer may not approve your application if you’ve opened a Wells Fargo credit card in the past six months. The bank may also limit how many open cards you can have.

Bottom line

The new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card offers some exciting rewards on travel and dining, along with the card issuer’s first points transfer program. If you’re a frequent traveler, the card’s outsized and flexible rewards on travel purchases can make it a no-brainer.

But as with any other credit card, the Autograph Journey card isn’t the right fit for everyone. Take your time to shop around and compare several credit cards, considering your spending habits and feature preferences to determine which one is the best fit for you.

Please note that card details are accurate as of the publish date, but are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the issuer. Please contact the card issuer to verify rates, fees, and benefits before applying.
