Thinking of heading to Japan for an epic graduation trip? 🤩 Here’s everything you need to know to plan the perfect trip for your Graduation trip in Japan!

This blog post has read your thoughts and will tell you why Japan is the ✨perfect ✨destination for your once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

First and foremost, I am sure you (and your parents) will be happy to learn that Japan is consistently ranked one of the safest countries in the world. Its rich culture, history, centuries-old traditions, stunning shrines, temples, and breathtaking wilderness are just a fraction of what the country offers.

Graduation trip in Japan Intro 1

Picture this; you are in Tokyo, Japan’s capital, with your best mates. Walking down the city streets, you witness innovation and modernity at their finest, contrasting retro buildings and Japan’s ancient culture and traditions. You realise you just entered another universe where the options and possibilities are endless, promising you a new adventure every day. Your bucket list may include shopping till you drop and find unique items, spending the night in a retro games arcade, going animal cafe hopping, having the wildest night outs, attending unforgettable events, and fun-filled theme parks, sports games, and seasonal festivals. As the last day approaches, you all have one of those moments you may have thought only happened in movies. You laugh and smile at each other for no reason, maybe shed a few tears because you know you just made lifelong memories and irreplaceable intercultural exchanges.

Have I convinced you yet? 👀

P.S. Did I mention how heavenly Japanese food is??? 🤤

Rest assured that here you will find the best of both worlds; you can take a relaxing trip to the countryside to recharge your batteries, explore one of Japan’s major cities like Tokyo, gain an international experience, or even do a combination of both! There is something for all tastes and preferences. Whether in Japan’s far north city of Hokkaido, heaven for snow sports enthusiasts and ski resorts, or at the island’s southernmost town of Okinawa with soft sand beaches, azure waters and plenty of aquatic adventures, you will definitely find something that appeals to you and your friends.

You can begin organising your holiday 2-3 months in advance to reduce stress if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations. For the best experience, we recommend learning a few keywords in the native language and reading up on social etiquette and culture.

Japan 101 👩🏻‍🏫 📚

Before diving into today’s topic, there are a few things to know about Japan.

If you’re concerned about the language barrier, know that while Japanese is the most generally spoken language, notable tourist destinations and infrastructures will have English guides and recommendations. Not only that, but you can navigate anywhere via the Google Translate app, which includes instant translation and support. If you don’t understand what is listed on a menu at a typical Japanese restaurant, aim your phone camera at the page, and it will immediately translate it; the same applies to street signs or directions. Besides, even with the language and cultural barriers, many Japanese people will genuinely try to help you and make you feel welcome in their home country.

Helpful information can also be obtained online through well-known websites, including Japan Guide or our agency, Flip Japan Guide. With several years of living and travelling experience under our belt, our team can provide you with the best tailor-made itinerary and recommendations in Japan. Should you have any queries or need help organising a program, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us via any of our social media outlets. Besides, our first consultation call is free of charge for you to get to know us and our professional services, creating a trusting bond.

Another important consideration is that Japan is still predominantly a cash-based nation, with few establishments taking credit cards. However, this is gradually changing, particularly in the aftermath of the Tokyo Olympics, which resulted in several modifications. Money exchange services are readily available in central districts such as Shinjuku, and you may withdraw cash from convenience stores, notably 7-Elevens, which have ATMs that accept foreign credit cards. Just make sure you notify your bank and authorise international usage!

📝 Noted everything down? Let’s get to planning!

Step 1: What is your purpose? 🎯

Graduation trip in Japan What is your purpose 1

You must first decide on the intention of your celebratory vacation. That encompasses all of your preferences and the things you want to see and experience the most during your trip. You may choose to explore Japan for various reasons, with its diverse food and drinks, entertainment complex, vibrant nightlife, pop culture, stylish and distinctive boutiques, and outlets, discovering more about the country’s cultural heritage, among others.

Graduation trip in Japan What is your purpose 2

One of the biggest reasons for coming to Japan is to eat and drink. Did you know that Tokyo, Japan’s capital, has the most Michelin-starred restaurants on the planet? That should give you an inkling of how outstanding the local cuisine and beverages are here. Not only can you find diners serving authentic homemade Japanese food but also international dishes, from French cafes and Middle-Eastern specialties to all-you-can-eat Brazilian BBQ buffets. Better yet, you will find that bars and restaurants are mostly easily accessible in the restless city of Tokyo. There are also many affordable yet delicious options, including all-you-can-eat/drink menus. That is the best combo, am I right, or am I right? Ultimately, there are dining options to suit every taste, wallet, and diet, with more vegan and gluten-free restaurants launching in major cities.

Pro tip : To save money on food and beverages, dine at or order from local restaurants serving Japanese delicacies via applications such as uber eats or wolt. Alternatively, browse your nearest convenience store for low-cost meals and quirky snacks.

Another probable incentive to visit Japan is its thriving nightlife and pop culture. You may already be aware that Japan is renowned for its console games, novels, comics, and anime, but it is also a popular venue for all things related to music, including live concerts, festivals, cinematography, and so on.

Graduation trip in Japan What is your purpose 3-3

Big cities like Tokyo and Osaka have a plethora of cafes and izakayas (pubs) with motifs, atmospheres, and tasty appetisers to enhance your go-to beverage. There are also hidden pubs and restaurants with mysterious doorways. 🤫  Actually, here at Flip, we conduct unique bar-hopping and nightlife excursions, guaranteeing that you have an enjoyable and unforgettable night out in Tokyo!

On the subject of fun, did you know that the country holds a one-of-a-kind Disney Sea park and Universal Studios in Tokyo and Osaka? If you are a thrill seeker or need that adrenaline rush, try out Fuji Q theme park in Tokyo. Offering wild roller coaster rides and games, it’s one of those places where you surely will laugh out loud and make unforgettable memories with your friends.

Graduation trip in Japan What is your purpose 4-1

Aside from being one of the world’s most secure countries, with Tokyo operating as both a gastronomic paradise and a fashion metropolis, Japanese culture and customs span thousands of years and are truly one-of-a-kind. Along with exploring majestic temples, shrines, and futuristic museums, you can also partake in seasonal festivals, attend a tea ceremony while dressed in a kimono, learn to make sushi, witness a sumo battle or baseball game, and more. A bonus is that these activities will share exciting tales and teach you about Japan’s rich history and ancient philosophies!

Determining your purpose will allow you to know your trip’s direction and what you need to focus on without feeling overwhelmed. It will be a good idea to set up a group chat with your friends to discuss your travels, guest list, dates, and people’s attendance.

Step 2: Budget 💰

Graduation trip in Japan Budget

This is a critical step that will determine the rest of your journey. Your new best pal will be Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or a basic notebook with a pen. It is advisable to itemise your expenses, including aeroplane tickets, lodging, food and beverages, excursions, shopping, activities you wish to attend, transportation costs, and other associated fees. If you are vacationing in a group, discuss and clarify all estimated expenditures with your mates to ensure everyone is comfortable and on the same page about everything. Through our travel planning services, Flip can minimise the hassle of preparing for your journey abroad. We also provide a tailored Japan starter kit that includes everything you will need, such as a SIM card, tour guide brochures, and a transit card. In other words, you may calmly study for your final examinations, knowing that all is being arranged for you. 😉

Step 3: How long can you stay in Japan? 🤔

Graduation trip in Japan How long can you stay in Japan 1

The subsequent step is to figure out the timeframe of your stay in Japan, bearing in mind your budget and objectives. Check your agenda and the flexibility of the people you will travel with, as some may only be available on long weekends or public holidays. The length of your trip in Japan will be influenced by your and your mates’ interests and the number of places you choose to visit, alongside your budget and availability.

Graduation trip in Japan How long can you stay in Japan 2

Say you can only take a weekend trip. In such a scenario, we propose exploring one of Japan’s main cities, such as Tokyo, with numerous sightseeing options, traditional and cultural activities, superb dining, and dynamic nightlife. However, if you have the chance to visit Japan for a week, then you can check out our itinerary here. Travelling for the first time in Japan can be overwhelming and stressful to organise as everything will be new and unfamiliar. That is why we advise you to explore one city, including all its wonders and hidden gems, and the next time you visit the country, you can expand your horizons and travel to other nearby destinations. For example, you can see Tokyo on your first-time trip, and the next time, or when you have more time, you can go to Osaka and Kyoto, which have famous landmarks, culinary delights, and untapped treasures to discover.

Step 4: Figure out the best city/cities for you 🏙️ 🗼

Graduation trip in Japan Figure out the best city_cities for you 1

Another consideration is which area and cities/cities better accommodate your interests and bucket-list activities. If you want a location with great entertainment and exciting nightlife, megacities like Tokyo and Osaka are the best bet. If, on the other hand, you want to have a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan areas but still have access to a diverse range of sightseeing and cultural activities, you should consider visiting cities in Japan’s countryside or historic towns such as Kyoto.

Graduation trip in Japan Figure out the best city_cities for you 2

However, as you might have already guessed, the options don’t stop there. If you travel to the north of Japan in Hokkaido, you will be in a winter wonderland, perfect for winter sports and ski resorts, not to mention a grand snow festival held every year in wintertime with fabulous street food and hot beverages.

Graduation trip in Japan Figure out the best city_cities for you 3

On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you want to get some Vitamin D and catch a tan, head to one of Japan’s southern islands, such as Okinawa. Imagine soaking in warm, clear blue waters on coastal beaches, sipping on a pina colada; what more could you ask for? There are also plenty of marine adventures to experiment with, such as scuba diving or white water rafting.

Graduation trip in Japan Figure out the best city_cities for you 4

Likewise, Yokohama is a train ride away from Tokyo if you want to enjoy port cities. It offers scenic views with its lush green park, a giant cup-noodle museum offering you the chance to create your own noodle product, a world-famous Chinatown with mouth-watering street food, and typical restaurants, not to mention cute shopping districts with artsy photo spots for the feed. As the sun goes down, the city is illuminated by fairy lights. Its giant Ferris wheel is surrounded by a lively and colourful theme park, promising you a cheerful moonlit adventure.

If you want a combination of big cities and countryside retreats, getting a J.R. Pass might be worthwhile, allowing you to save on your travels from city to city. If you need further information and are interested in purchasing this pass, Flip can have it all organised for you, ensuring you a stress-free journey.

Step 5: Activities and places to be visited 🗺️

Graduation trip in Japan Activities and places to be visited 1

One of the most critical aspects of planning a trip is establishing what you will do and where you will visit. To that, you probably thought, “you don’t say.” But this is just as important as the previous steps.

Remember that your plans may change once you reach Japan, depending on weather conditions and jet lag, among other factors. For example, you might want to postpone your adventures in Universal Studios Osaka if the day you planned to go forecasts heavy rain all day ☔🤧

Graduation trip in Japan Activities and places to be visited 2

When most people think of Japan, temples and shrines usually spring to mind, but the country has so much more to offer. Aside from seeing the city’s most “touristy” attractions, you may also choose to engage in entertaining activities that most locals love, including singing your lungs out at karaoke or uncovering hidden gems in your neighbourhood’s back alleyways. Equally worthwhile, Japan’s natural beauty deserves a standing ovation. Several cultural traditions are intertwined with seasonal celebrations, such as “hanami,” in which people gather around cherry blossom trees for a picnic. If you fancy hiking and exploring the great outdoors, Japan will not disappoint you with its vast mountains, stunning landscapes, hiking trails surrounded by nature, and other wilderness adventures.

Graduation trip in Japan Activities and places to be visited 3

Residing at traditional Japanese hotels, or “ryokans,” is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. Some hotels feature hot spring baths on-site and commonly provide authentic Japanese set meals with rich and aromatic ingredients. In matters of nightlife, our weekly excursions will show you to local favourite bars and bustling clubs that you might not have discovered on your own. We will handle all the planning and research, including making reservations and ensuring that you and your mates receive a complimentary drink or shot of your choice at the first pit stop of the night!

The fun does not end there. Introducing the world’s first personalised chatbot tour guide, Flip offers an innovative and entertaining way for you to explore Tokyo city in a game-like format. Within 2 minutes, you can get your ticket directly inside Facebook Messenger. After acquiring your ticket, chat with your virtual tour guide; choose your path and let your chatbot know what you want throughout the tour, and enjoy your adventure! You can find all you need to know about the following themes and available tours here.

Step 6: Logistics ⚙️

As the last step, it is time to conclude everything and focus on ✨logistics✨

There are numerous activities you can do in Japan, as previously discussed; it will all depend on the purpose of your trip and your preferences.

Graduation trip in Japan Logistics 1

When it comes to lodging, Japan provides a wide range of choices. Stay in a “ryokan” for a traditional and authentic experience. Every city will have a one-of-a-kind Japanese hotel waiting for you, and we can assist you in making bookings, as many will only speak the native language. To save on accommodation costs, look into hostels or capsule hotels in your chosen location. Booking an Airbnb is also an excellent alternative for people of different budgets and tastes. There are several unique B&Bs with distinctive atmospheres and architecture. Finally, if you want to pamper yourself, cities like Tokyo have fantastic luxury hotels providing world-class service and superb dining options.

Graduation trip in Japan Logistics 2

Right, now that accommodation is out of the way, you might wonder, what on earth am I supposed to pack for Japan? The short answer is: that it depends on what season you plan to come to and what region you will visit. Suppose you plan to go during summertime, don’t. Just kidding, despite the scorching heat, monsoon rains, and constant humidity, summer in Japan has its perks and seasonal treasures, including its annual traditional festivals and celebrations with fun games and street food, entertaining events, as well as gorgeous nature and scenic views throughout the country. The key is to dress light and wear flowy, airy, and comfortable clothes.

Graduation trip in Japan Logistics 3

In autumn, the weather is brilliant; with a cool breeze and sunlight, you will be mesmerised by the changing leaves, cascading in red, orange, and yellow tones to the ground. For this season, pack both short and long sleeve shirts and blouses, sneakers, pants, and light jackets. As winter approaches, you will need much warmer clothes and layers, including heavy coats and scarves, especially if you plan to visit northern Japan or stay at a ski resort. Lastly, springtime in Japan has fantastic weather, which is not too cold or warm. You will get by with long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, or T-shirts with a jacket or cardigan over them. For a more detailed clothes itinerary, feel free to reach out to us at Flip; we consider all of these details in our travel services.

One of the must-have items, when you arrive in Japan, is a transportation card. That will allow you to easily travel from place to place just like a local. Visitors tend to have either a Pasmo card or a Suica card, which you can buy at any big station in Tokyo or upon arrival at the airport. For certain countries, topped-up transportation cards can be delivered to your home before travelling for an extra fee.

Graduation trip in Japan Logistics 4

Just like transportation cards, you can order your SIM card from companies such as Mobil before arriving in Japan and pick it up at the airport upon arrival. Alternatively, you can have it delivered to your place before your trip. The rates and expenses differ from company to company, so do a little investigation before picking your commuter pass.

Lastly, there is always a lot of confusion about the J.R. Pass. Is it worth it to get one? The answer is that it depends; if you plan to explore different cities in a couple of weeks, the J.R. Pass might be worthwhile. However, if you stay in a town for the entire trip, it would not be a fitting choice.

Having covered all the essentials, if you have any other questions or wish to book one of our services or tours, try out our games, or get a Japan starter pack, feel free to reach out to us on any of our social media platforms, and we will be happy to help!

See you soon in Japan! 🇯🇵

What to Expect of Graduation in Japan

What to Expect of Graduation in Japan

A western graduation is like a festival, bright colors and smiles. However, graduation in Japan is a stark contrast to the festivals of the west. When I went to my first graduation ceremony, I thought it was strange that there was a ceremony even for junior high school, but as I watched the process and formality that went into each ceremony for the graduating students, I realized that maybe the idea wasn’t so strange.

In spring—and for most schools—at the beginning of March, students graduate from junior high school. For months, they studied for the difficult entrance exams of their dream high schools and even worried over complicated interviews. So the ceremonies that are held for them are quite indicative of all the work not only the students have put in, but also all the students’ home room teachers have put in.

The first ceremony for graduating third-years is the farewell ceremony or 送る会 (okurukai). Each school’s ceremony is different, but all ceremonies play videos of the children’ memories from their first year to their last. At my base school, they sang songs, played group games, received video messages from teachers from yesteryear, talked about their experiences in junior high school, and received well wishes from their second and first-year 後輩 (kohais) or juniors. When it was all said and done, I knew they would be balling their eyes out during graduation.

Grad18_2f

At the beginning of the ceremony, the students walked in stone-faced. They sat in rows according to their homeroom class with their 代表 (daihyo) or class representative at the top of the row. As the third-year homeroom teachers (dressed in hakama or traditional academic kimonos) called their names, they stood up with a firm  hai!   and waited for the representative to walk up to the stage and accept the stack of graduation certificates from the principle. After each class received their certificates, the ceremony moved on to speeches from the principle and prominent members of the local teaching community (i.e, principles from their previous elementary schools and association members). When the speeches finished, the students sang the school song for a final time before turning around to face their juniors and parents to sing the farewell song together. As we clapped the kids out of the gymnasium and I saw those faces crack into tears, I knew I would miss them but wished them the best.

The students had prepped for almost two weeks for the big whammy, the graduation ceremony. Graduation ceremonies in Japan are all pomp and circumstance with all black suits and formality. The students wear their student uniforms, cleaned pristinely the day before, cut their hair, and put on contacts ( glasses are apparently so  ダサい). It is truly a ceremony marking a new chapter in their lives, and the students treat it as such. Last year, I was impressed by how emotional each student became because i myself didn’t cry for both of my graduations (i’m a cold-hearted soul), but seeing third-years struggle a second year for the entrance exams and the chance to get into their dream high school made me empathize even more.

Gradation18_4f

After the ceremony, the students do a final goodbye in their homerooms classes and come outside to say goodbye to their teachers. I took pictures with some of the students and wished many of them well. On the same day—unlike last year—they would receive their entrance exam results. Many of the students came back later that same day to talk to the teachers and thank them for successfully getting into their high schools. Many of the students who wrote me a thank you letter came back to tell me they passed and to thank me for a final time. Some of the students did not get into their first-choice high schools, but luckily (and like university in the US) they had second and third-choice high schools to move on to.

High school in Japan is very similar to the university experience in the United States. High school in Japan can make or break a student’s academic career because the prestigiousness of the high school often outweighs the university. Of course, getting into a well-known university will help them in their eventual job pursuit, but if you don’t start with a good high school, it will be harder to go to that high-level university. University in Japan tends to be more about students having fun as they’ve worked hard up to that point, grades and GPAs don’t matter as much unless they plan on going overseas, and they can only go job hunting from there

Grad18_5487f

After the ceremony, you also get a pretty awesome lunch box.

Next year, the first-year students that welcomed me about two years ago will graduate—an exciting end to an era.

Freshman Year University Life in Japan

Club Activities: サークル (Saakuru; Circle) and 部活 (Bukatsu)

The school year in Japanese universities begins in April. And depending on the region, you may see cherry blossoms in full bloom or fallen petals on the ground. Looking at the campus map and moving between unfamiliar buildings, the words “saakuru” reach my ears, almost sounding like “sakura (cherry blossoms)”.

What is “saakuru”?

「サークル saakuru」 means “circle” , as in “a group of people with common interests” . It can very loosely mean “club” or “society”, and is a term primarily used in Japanese colleges, universities, etc. higher education institutions .

「サークル活動 saakuru katsudou」 means “circle activities” , “group activities” , and very loosely “club activities”.

What is “bukatsu”?

「部活 bukatsu」 and 「部活動 bukatsudo」 both mean “club activities” or “extracurricular activities” . The term “bukatsudo” is primarily used in elementary, middle and high schools in Japan . The biggest difference between “saakuru” and “bukatsu” are their status and purpose.

Difference between Saakuru and Bukatsu

In the case of saakuru , they are not officially recognized by the college/university and therefore receive no funding for activities. At the most, they receive a place to carry on activities. The upside is that the atmosphere is more relaxed as the main (sometimes only) purpose is for people of the same interest to gather and mingle . They also have much more freedom when it comes to circle activities, circle types, and meet-ups.

On the other hand, bukatsu are officially recognized by colleges/universities and receive funding for their activities. They can only be described as being more “serious” with members expected to be dedicated to club activities, maintain the club’s reputation, and achieve results through activities amongst others. Clubs that join competitions will represent their university . Since performance results are important, it is common for clubs to have practice or activities daily .

Types of Circles

japan graduation trip

Here’s a peek at the different type of circles that are available:

Sports : Baseball, soccer, skiing, snowboarding, judo, kendo, swimming, etc.

Culture : Film, theater, dance, art, literature, traditional arts (dance, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy), photography, gag (owarai), magic, etc.

Humanitarian : Support for developing countries, nursing facilities, childcare facilities, disaster support, etc.

Study Majors : English, law, history, politics, media, mathematics, languages, finance, etc.

English : ESS (English Speaking Society/ English Studying Society), mainly English conversation circle

Media : Broadcasting research, advertising research, publishing

Planning/Events : A circle that hosts various events such as walks, quiz competitions, and beauty/handsome pageants.

Subcultures : Anime, Manga, Games

What is circle slang - “inkare”, “kensa”, “oran”?

Usage of slang terms is common in universities, including expressions relating to circles. Here are some circle slangs that may be difficult to guess what they actually mean.

Inkare (インカレ) : An abbreviation for “inter-college” that refers to university union circles, a circle that is composed of students from various universities.

Kensa (兼サー) : The kanji「兼」means “cum”, “concurrently”, and “at the same time”. One of the common usages is in「兼業 kengyou」which means “side business”. This term refers to joining multiple circles within the university.

Oran (オーラン) : An abbreviation for “all-round circle (オールラウンドサークル)” which is a type of circle. Unlike typical circles that have a fixed theme and activities, like sports, it is a social circle for enjoying university life so anything goes.

School Cafeteria: 学食 (Gakushoku)

After listening to the circle’s enthusiastic attempts to promote themselves and recruit new members, I’m starting to get hungry. It’s time for lunch at “gakushoku”, one of the joys of college life. Each university has its own recommendations (オススメ osusume). Some university cafeterias are open to the general public as well, so it’s a good experience to check it out.

japan graduation trip

Brief stop here>> Waseda University Gakushoku Research Group

At the prestigious Waseda University in Japan, there is an interesting circle that goes around trying the food at school cafeterias. They release a “Gakushoku Ranking” every year, and the results are published in the “Gakushoku Guidebook (学食ガイドブック)” magazine, covered by television, and etc. as a standard for other school cafeteria .

「ここはこれ!」”Koko wa kore!” “(Eat) this here!”

The circle’s biggest goal is finding (and sampling) unique and loved food at various university cafeterias, and then sharing it with others.

Part Time Job: アルバイト (arubaito)

In Japan, many people get a part time job for the first time in their life when starting university. Why? Because they have more spare time compared to high school life when they need to juggle studies, club activities and university entrance exams. It is a great feeling for many to finally work a job, earn their own money, and feel like an independent adult. Arubaito can be said to be a huge part of university life in Japan.

japan graduation trip

For international students, working a part time job is mostly for practicality sake. Income from working a part time job can help support the high tuition costs and living costs when studying in Japan. Not to mention, the more money you earn means more money to spend . Another advantage of arubaito is the opportunity to practice and improve your Japanese speaking and listening skills . Plus, if you work near your university, the chances of making friends with a fellow student or working with a friend increases.

Especially studious students may want to focus on their studies instead of getting distracted by arubaito. In such a case, you can always choose to work only during summer vacation that starts in July, usually from as short as 2 months to as long as 3 months. End of the year winter vacations are also a good time, especially since not many people want to work at those times as they return to their hometown to welcome the New Year, which means higher wages to attract people to work.

However, in the case of international students, their status of residence is “student (留学)” and thus not allowed to work. If you want to work, you need to obtain a “permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” which allows you to work for up to 28 hours a week (up to 40 hours a week during long-term school closures). There are also other rules such as prohibited industries such as the entertainment industry. Read < What is a “permission to engage in other activities other than that permitted under status of residence” in Japan? Necessity, application method, and precautions. > carefully.

Wondering about what job to get? Read < Work While You Study: Top Part Time Jobs for International Students in Japan > to find the perfect job for you.

Coming-of-Age Ceremony: 成人式 (seijin shiki)

In Japan, first year university students are generally 19 years old. Therefore, many university students celebrate the coming-of-age ceremony in their sophomore year when they turn 20, the age of adulthood. However, from April 1, 2022 , Japan has lowered the age of adulthood in Japan from 20 to 18 years old. Following this change, many local municipalities have changed their schedules for coming-of-age ceremonies to accommodate those who are turning 18 and 20.

Generally, coming-of-age ceremonies are held on a date close to the coming-of-age day (成人の日) in January, and are hosted by local public organizations. Celebration activities include speeches, parties, gift exchanges, etc. Around mid-January, many of these soon to be adult youths will take commemorative photos at their local halls or in front of their childhood homes.

japan graduation trip

Furisode (振袖) is the traditional garment worn by women at coming-of-age ceremonies. It is expensive so most students cannot afford to buy one, and the rental price is also quite high. For this reason, there are some people who view coming-of-age ceremonies negatively. Still, seeing the joyous faces of these beautiful girls, soon to be women, dressed up beautifully and taking photos in front of their house makes me happy.

Disney: ディズニー

There are moments when your lack of familiarity with Japanese culture will catch you off guard. And this is one of them, a whole group of university students (probably friends) dressed the same and heading somewhere together. In many countries in the world, “matching clothing” are for couples (couple outfits) or families with young children, but in Japan, matching clothing is something fun to do with friends as well. And the best place to show off your “matching fashion” is Disney.

Brief stop here>> Disney Fashion Coordinate: ディズニーコーディ (Disney koodi)

After working hard at your part time job, of course you’ll want to have some fun! Wearing matching colours, patterns, etc. when visiting Disneyland for a break from studies definitely sounds fun. Researching the best Disney outfit, aiming to be an Instabae (インスタ映え: photos that attract attention on Instagram), and of course getting cute headbands when you enter!

Third Year University Life in Japan

japan graduation trip

Seminar: ゼミ (zemi) / Study Camp: 合宿 (gasshuku)

Zemi (ゼミ) is the abbreviation for seminar (セミナー) . In Japan, seminars are “a method of teaching in the form of research presentation and discussion led by university professors” . It is closer to a study group or workshop rather than a lecture to listen to.

japan graduation trip

Japanese university students are required to write a graduation thesis. At this time, you will be assigned to your advisor's seminar and receive guidance on your thesis. Students may sometimes leave for a “study camp (合宿)” as a unit of the seminar. As part of circle activities and preparations for culture festival, it is also common for students to leave for “training camps (合宿)” .

Internship: インターンシップ

japan graduation trip

Japan has a high employment rate, but even so the pressure to find a job seems to be a lot for Japanese university students. Job Hunting activities begin in earnest at the beginning of summer vacation for students in their 3rd Year of university, including joining internships. Just like when finding a job, you submit a resume, dress up in a suit, attend an interview, and experience failure, success, and the atmosphere of a full-fledged job.

The concept of internships in Japan can be quite different from other countries, not to mention the different work culture here. To get a better understanding of Japanese internships, read < Understanding the Concept of Japan Internships > so you’ll be better prepared and informed before applying for one.

Culture Festival: 文化祭 (bunkasai)

japan graduation trip

When summer vacation ends and fall semester begins, Japanese universities become engulfed in the atmosphere of culture festivals. From September to November , “culture festival” season begins in universities. Depending on the university, it is also called “university festival (大学祭 daigakusai)” or “campus festival (学園祭 gakuensai)” .

Cultural Festivals are the best time for circles to show what they’re made of. Classic festival foods like yakisoba, crepes, candy apples, etc. are made fresh and sold. There’s performances performed by circle members themselves, and maybe also guest invited performers. In recent times, popular foreign foods like Korean tteokbokki and German sausages are also sold.

Final Graduation Year University Life in Japan

japan graduation trip

Job Hunting: 就活 (shuukatsu)

japan graduation trip

As the third year cultural festival ends and winter vacation approaches, Japanese university students begin their job hunting activities , called 「就職活動 shuukatsu katsudou」 , in earnest. It is the season for job information sessions, job briefings, career fairs, and so many interviews your daily wear changes to suits.

Although the timing varies from company to company, and from individual to individual, many people receive a job offer notification, or「内定 naitei」, during the summer vacation of their 4th year which is from July to September.

Brief stop here>> What happens after I receive a job offer notification?

There are still many things to do after that. For the Japanese, they:

Complete their graduation thesis

Register at a driving school to get a driver’s license

Plan a graduation trip

Work part time and save up money

For a guide from preparing to job hunt till receiving your job offer notice, read < Guide to Job Hunting in Japan for Fresh Graduates and International Students >.

Graduation Trip: 卒業旅行 (sotsugyou ryokou)

When it comes to university, graduation trips are not organized by the school but rather between close friends. Many university students in Japan go on graduation trips because it’s one of the last chances for everyone to travel together for a long time. Hokkaido, Okinawa… visiting a famous tourist spot in Japan, working hard to save money for the trip, or even planning a trip overseas to experience foreign culture, it really depends on your group of friends where your destination will be.

japan graduation trip

The last breath of freedom becoming a 「社会人 shakaijin」 , working adult . A graduation trip to blow away your regrets and end your university life in Japan with a bang! Stretch your arms out with a “V” sign to commemorate your youth with dear friends from university and walk into adulthood with a clear heart and mind.

University life in Japan looks pretty fun! If you are thinking about studying in Japan, then look no further than < How to Study in Japan, An Essential Guide to Becoming an International Student in Japan >.

Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms) Tour

Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)

I would have rated the experience as Excellent, had I and others on the tour not been told to book our flights to leave from an airport that was much further and altogether harder to get to from the final hotel location. The closer airport would have cost less to fly out from, causing even more of an expense.

Stunning Japan with Shirakawa-go (private 3 star hotel rooms)

Without doubt a 5-star service. Stunning Tours are a game-changer when it came to overseeing our family holiday itinerary suggestions and the final plans. Their so helpful and responsive throughout the entire process, and a joy to coordinate with. Full of great ideas and little tips and pointers that made our holiday run like clockwork. The organisation on the ground in Japan couldn’t have done any smoother. We would 100% use Stunning Tours again. Amazing value!

Splendours of Japan (9 Days) Tour

Splendours of Japan (9 Days)

We have just returned from 9 day tour. Our tour director Naggi was great. She did everything to accommodate all our needs. The locations and the hotels themselves were very good. It is true that the hotel in Nagano was not on the same level but we were brought in at the end of the very long day so nobody had any desire to leave the hotel for any exploration and we got an excellent opportunity to change into kimonos, experience Japanese onsen and had the great buffet dinner. My greatest complaint is with Trafalgar's itinerary. For the first day in the itinerary it says 'see the Tokyo skytree' but it should say " mention the Tokyo skytree". "5th station" on mount Fuji - none though there were weather problems. The worst part though was that we drove to the Goykayama in anticipation of washi paper demonstration but instead were had 30 minutes in Mr. Murakami house for the very mediocre presentation, drove an 1.5 hour to Kanazawa and then told that by the way tomorrow we should drive back to Goykayama to watch washi paper demonstration. How can any company plan such things?! If for whatever reason washi demonstration could not be done on the day of the tour they should have replaced it with for example pottery demonstration which Kanazawa is famous for. As the result when the group came back after 3 hour roundtrip it started raining and there was no time to enjoy one of the real highlight of the tour - Kenroku-en garden. The itinerary in Tokyo is very poor. They could have done Edo Museum, Asakusa (greatly overrated) and Imperial Palace (worth 40 minutes) in one day, leave out sushi preparation as optional but on the second day organize the day trip to Nikko. Moreover Nijo castle is the real highlight in Kyoto (not planned) while overcrowded Fukushima Inari (planned) is curious at best. Bottom line: the itinerary deserves C+ at best.

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun Tour

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun

I did a lot of group tours in the past, more than 50 single trips and this is my second tour with this operator. It’s a budget tour and that’s what you get. Start with the Hostels. pro: - surprisingly most of the backpacker’s hostels were really clean and modern. I always had a good sleep. The showers and toilets were cleaned regularly and the water pressure was perfect. Towels (except of one time) were provided also shampoo, body wash, conditioner and hairdryer etc. contra: - most of the time we had to sleep in 6-10 bed dorms. And of course it depends on the ppl if they are noisy or smelly. Bear this in mind. Sightseeing pro: - we saw a lot of shrines, castles, temples, pubs, restaurants and of course the museum in Hiroshima etc. We could get a slight overview of Japan and all the tourist attractions. contra: - we saw a lot of shrines, castles, pubs and restaurants! Sadly, because Japan is a crazy country and has a lot more to offer. At some point I was bored to visit the next shrine. So I ended up spending a day on my own to enjoy the Japanese lifestyle. Suggestions: Akashi - a cafe in Japan is famous for having one of the most bizarre toilets - it is surrounded by a giant aquarium. Or the Shibuya Sky's escalator. It is the most famous escalator in Tokyo. Transportation pro: - experience the Japanese subway and underground station and the tons of ppl. Don’t be scared. It’s not that bad. Don’t miss! contra: - you walk a lot. If it’s from the train station to the hostel or to other places. Sometimes there were no escalators so you get a great workout by stair climbing. Due to some kind of mismanagement we had two wait two times 2 hours at a train station for our train. It’s just wasted time. If you know there is time to kill you should find an alternative. 7-Eleven is none! Tourguide pro: - our guide was friendly, funny and nice! He already made sure that we got all the information for the next day in the evening before so everyone was well informed. There was not only one moment some one was missing or didn’t know what was going on. He was very thoughtful and managed to handout seat reservations to ppl he knew they are close, so everyone felt comfortable. He waited for everyone who stayed behind, and he showed a lot of patience for everyone, even if it meant waiting until everyone took their 100th photo. He always recommended restaurants, bars or shopping areas. It was easy to find. I can tell that he put a lot of effort into the daily heads-up! contra: - lack of knockledge. I missed information about Japanese lifestyle, behavior, do‘s and don’ts. Most of the time I googled it by myself. - Unfortunately, he was unable to stop some very rude behavior from grp members. If one grp member burb‘s loudly in front of a host, he shouldn’t let this slide. I felt so sorry for this nice host ladies and I felt embarrassed myself! - His acceptance of a random f*ckboy a grp member brought into the grp after a nights out was also inexcusable. This guy showed up regularly at almost every occasion (karaoke/last team event). A few grp members including myself felt very uncomfortable. Mentioned to the guide that he should be the one to stop this (because it’s a group event) was just ignored. To not ruin the mood the grp members agreed to let it slide.

Premium Japan Tour

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Horrible dinner and lunch choices, as part of the paid tour. And they dumped us off in some area to purchase cooking equipmnet for a couple hours, which was pretty ridiculous. But everything else was prettty good.

A great trip but could have been a few days longer as not enough time in Hiroshima and Osaka. Could have been better accommodation in Takayama as it was a very tired inn. A great group of people and our tour guide was brilliant

What people love about Japan Tours for Seniors

The guide was the best
It was a really great experience! Having both guided tours and lots of free time made for a nicely balanced tour where our guide, Toshimi, a very knowledgeable local, would show us parts of Japan and tell us of their significance historically and socially, and also tell us how and where to appreciate Japan during our free time. Our guide loves Japan's history and it was very interesting talking to him about Japan. He also made lots of great recommendations on places to see and eat at, and overall made the whole tour experience very convenient, fun, and informative.

Arriving from the airport of Ibaraki, because there is no bus to Tokyo station, we first take the bus to Shigang station, and then take Jr to Shangye station. The car fare of 2000 yen immediately made me feel the deep malice of Japanese traffic! But the sunny days in Japan make me very happy! Any photo has a super Japanese feel! Trams, electric lines, intersections, people on trams, road signs, every little detail tells me that this is Japan.

Japan's first meal, Yosano, let more delicious come more violent!

The next day, we took the romance from Shinjuku to Haken. The climbing tram was walking in the shape. After passing the cable car, we came to Dachong Valley and ate a black egg that is said to prolong our life. Of course, the most beautiful is Mount Fuji. It's sunny and beautiful. In the lake of Lu, you can steal boats from Shanghai and stroll leisurely in Yuangen. The best is to stay in a Japanese Hotel, bubble soup, sitting in the room and eating Japanese dinner. It's better to walk on the Japanese path. I like the tranquility and leisure of Hakone. If I have a chance to come to Japan next time, Hakone is a must, and then I will go to those places where I haven't been. (episode: the Japanese really liked it, because our mistake burned the outlet of the hotel, so cute brother apologized all the time for fear that we were useless, and another brother helped us to wear a bathing suit. Praise!

Hakone's first impression is quiet and green.

Although half of the face is covered by clouds, the snow covered Mount Fuji is very beautiful

A buffet in the valley of daeyong. Finally, I learned a little about Japanese etiquette, how much can I take for buffet, and how much can I take for buffet, and how much can I take for buffet? Even the design of plate is to let people take only one sip for each kind.

After crossing the lake of Lushi, I came to yuanhaken. There was no one over the quiet path, but the buildings and paths told us that this was Japan.

Back to the Japanese style hotel, put on the bathrobe, put on the teapot, and come to install the people who understand the tea ceremony.

Super rich Japanese dinner! Tianfuluo eat to support! As a Japanese etiquette, we've eaten everything! But the rice really can't eat.

So lucky to meet two weddings in Meiji temple! But at this time of travel, it was also a very tired day. At noon, we went back to Ueno from Hakone, and we went the wrong way in Google's naked pit. The exhaustion of searching for a hotel in the hot sun continued into the evening. The high price of Ginza and the huge number of people in Yuansu make this day seem exhausted. Fortunately, the night view of the last Tokyo Tower surprised us! From the subway station, the corner of the startled Hong, you can see the Tokyo Tower decorated with blue lights. Go all the way to find the best place to take photos, and have no fun!

Sapporo Ramen Republic

Ramen is great! I want to finish all eight when I have time!

Sapporo Ramen Republic, composed of eight Ramen pavilions, gathers all kinds of ramen pavilions in Hokkaido! It must be!

Into the Ramen Republic, the detail design is very interesting. The waiters of every Ramen restaurant are very enthusiastic to promote their own Ramen!

Baihua Mountain Villa's noodles with added flavor!

Two people grinding sesame seeds!

One day tour in Sapporo! Sapporo is a very slow-paced city. Get up at nine in the morning and walk from the hotel to Hokkaido University. Although the sun is a little overwhelming, the green Hokkaido University makes people feel very comfortable. The Chocolate Factory of white lovers gives people a surprise feeling, unable to resist the first souvenir, chocolate biscuit

Hokkaido University

Hokkaido University! OK It's called Peking University!

The University in the imagination must have towering trees!

Sapporo Station

Underground shopping mall of Sapporo Jr station! Countless delicious! Fresh super cheap, and so many Fried String! I just don't know why the Japanese prefer cold food and hot food?!

Let me eat barbecue scallops! No one can stop me! No matter how expensive you are!

The most famous thing in Hokkaido in summer is flowers! The flowers in the flower shop are very beautiful, and the roadside is even more colorful, which makes people dizzy. When do you have to come to Hokkaido in July? Go to fuliano to have a look at the colorful flower belt!

Crab family! I've come to eat Sapporo's fresh crabs!

Li Xiaodao store street

Otaru is a very romantic city. From Sapporo to Otaru, there is a section of train running along the sea. The blue water is very beautiful. There is only one main road in Otaru. We don't need to rent. We just need to walk along a path and slowly walk forward. We can experience the fun and beauty of xiaozun.

The tram from Otaru to Sapporo has a real section facing the sea. The clear water beats the stones on the bank. It's beautiful!

The combination of the track and the sea makes the picture feel super good!

Otaru canal

Film love letter shooting place, Otaru canal. Although it's very short, the warehouse on the bank also has a special flavor!

Enchanting yellow mulberry!

My lunch! Coke, winter bamboo shoot, squid, scallop, sea urchin! Super praise! The meaning of travel is to eat!

Otaru music box hall

Otaru music hall.

The octave box is full of music!

The most Japanese music box and my favorite cherry blossom

Great music box. But you can't touch it! This kind of music box can complete more complex melody and longer music fragments, and the wooden box also shows the retro atmosphere!

In the early morning of the eighth day, we took the only overnight train in Japan, the Big Dipper, from Sapporo to Ueno, then from Tokyo station to Kyoto. Maybe it's the fatigue of travel that makes everyone have some sensitivity. Maybe it's the short stay in Tokyo that makes everyone remember. A small quarrel broke out in Tokyo station. Travel may be like this, we go with each other, but there will be more or less contradictions in the journey, but mutual understanding and tolerance, at least we try to make our travel beautiful! In the evening, I went to Qingshui temple from the hotel, climbed the mountain along sannianniannianban, and finally saw the most beautiful Qingshui temple. However, it's a pity that we didn't walk in Kyoto in kimono because of the time!

Qingshui Temple

It is said that this is the most beautiful angle to see Qingshui temple. Almost every tourist takes a picture of Qingshui temple from this angle.

Standing in Qingshui temple, you can overlook the scenery of Kyoto. Dense little squares, Aha! It's really Japan!

sannianban and biannianban

Sannianban and ernianban are really a very Japanese style street. The shops on both sides are Japanese style buildings. It's very beautiful to wear a kimono and stroll here for half a day.

We had our first rain in Japan. Japanese like to walk on the road with transparent umbrella. Today's journey, along the JR Nara Line, we arrive at Nara, the hometown of Matcha - Yuzhi and sika deer. Nara's spring society and Dongda temple are both very beautiful, with a small Japanese style. But for me, the animal fearer, the sika deer that can be seen everywhere has really hurt me.

The quiet streets of Yuzhi.

Japanese bonsai is often seen in TV series or cartoons. Such a corner is exactly what I want to see and yearn for Japan!

Jr Yuzhi station

At least I think every station in Japan is simple but not simple, and each station has its own characteristics, rather than the same appearance.

February hall

In Nara, it's sunny again. Blue sky, white clouds and green space, in fact, a little beautiful life and scenery that city people yearn for is just like this.

Dongda Temple

spring society

In a small shop in the forest, stop, have a look at the scenery, have a cup of Matcha and a piece of red bean cake.

Jr Nara station

Kyoto Station

Kyoto K Youth Hotel

On the last day of Kyoto, I finally went to meet with Daohe society. In the afternoon, I arrived in Osaka by tram in half an hour. The most obvious feeling is that Kyoto is really the ancient capital, and everyone's dress is clear and simple, but Osaka is a city with a better degree of internationalization or development. The clothes of Japanese have changed obviously, and they have turned to the style of washing, cutting and blowing that can't be tolerated.

Fu Jian Dao He Da she

Yellow for marriage!!!

It's really beautiful!!! Red thousand birds live in ten thousand places! But I'm really tired after walking all the way!

Osaka is a city that is absolutely suitable for foodies and shopaholics. Xinzhai Bridge Street, to daotunhori, and then to the bombing string of Tongtian, you can't come to Osaka without your belly and wallet ready!!!

You can eat octopus balls everywhere!!!

Tongtian Pavilion

When it comes to Tongtian Pavilion, the most important thing to eat is your fried string shop. I am really attracted by the pictures, but my stomach is not enough! What a pity!!!

Tianshou Pavilion, Osaka City

Like an expedition, I went through Osaka City Park and finally came to Tianshou Pavilion. I came here all the way to realize a dream I saw in Conan!!! Come to Japan, is for their own animation dream. Although it's a little bit worse, I finally saw the logo building of the Ministry of clothing!!!

hep five Ferris wheel

aerial garden prospect platform

Osaka! Beautiful! Can write the time of sunset. It's great to see the sunset from a high place!

For me with acrophobia, this ring is really scary!!!

It's nice to overlook Osaka. But because of the wrong way, I missed the sunset by two minutes.

This elevator, which is suspended from the 35th to the 39th floor, is really thrilling!!!

longjianxiao food street

The night of the last day, me! At last! Eat! Osaka fire! Finally, I met a waiter who spoke English very well in a small shop!!! Great satisfaction!

Kansai International Airport

The last to leave! Goodbye to Japan!

2. Road trip across the US

Nothing bonds a group together like a long car journey, making a road trip across the US with your mates the perfect post-graduation send-off. It's hard to grasp the magnitude of the United States until you drive through it. Pick between visiting iconic national parks like Yellowstone ,   Yosemite  and the Grand Canyon , or cruising along the West Coast from the Redwoods to Joshua Tree  with a stop in some of the Golden State's famed cities, like San Francisco and Los Angeles . Uncovering the mysteries of the West has long been an American tradition, not to mention watching the landscapes change and evolve in a matter of days is a mesmerizing experience.

To keep this adventure affordable, try camping in the national parks rather than staying in hotels. It will require some advanced planning, maybe even some reservations. Visit nps.gov for more information.

Few places have the same vacation appeal as Greece . With its hot, sunny climate and stellar museums, especially the Acropolis Museum , the fantastic restaurants and endless island hopping opportunities, it's hard to have a dull moment. Pro-tip: Don't skip Athens . The birthplace of Western civilization and a paradise for thinkers, artists and scientists, come see the starting place for man's greatest ideas.

When it comes to Greece's islands, Mykonos is where the nightlife takes center stage, while Santorini provides a more romantic and relaxing atmosphere. Beware, a steep price tag comes with Greece's most popular island spots. Alternatively, if you crave a slightly less touristy experience, the Ionian Islands in early autumn make a great escape. Slow down, eat your way through fresh local delicacies and see what makes the Mediterranean way of life so revered.

4. Costa Rica

If college wasn't enough of a thrill, head to Costa Rica . Considered one of the happiest places on earth and packed with adventure opportunities, you can white water raft, zipline, traverse sky-high bridges, and surf the most stellar waves to your heart's content.

If you've spent the last four years in the heart of a city and are in dire need of some nature, warm weather, and delicious food , this after-graduation trip is for you. Start your day with a hearty serving of gallo pinto , take refuge from the heat with a street mango smothered in lime juice, salt and chili powder and wrap up the day with chifrijo,  a local dish of fried pork and beans with all the toppings. Not to mention, eating your body weight in ceviche is considered a right of passage. Pura Vida is right!

5. Vietnam

Affordable, beautiful and warm, a graduation trip to Vietnam gets you out of your comfort zone. Get lost in a sea of mopeds in Hanoi and slurp pho on stools along the sidewalk. Head up to Halong Bay , where you can tour its limestone islands on a junk boat. Enjoy an urban metropolis like Ho Chi Minh City , wander the Binh Tay Market  or visit Vietnam's only Taoist temple,  Khanh Van Nam Vien Pagoda , before cruising along the Mekong Delta and getting to know the locals at the Cai Rang Floating Market .

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

For a graduation trip that melds celebration with culture, look no further than New Orleans . The loud streets of this city burst with energy: live bands, dancing, cocktails and more. As New Orleans continues to be impacted by climate change, try to reduce your impact during your visit by using trains, bikes and public transport to explore the city.  Eat beignets (deep-fried pâte à choux pastries) in the French Quarter , listen to jazz in a dimly lit bar, and if you time it right, join in with the commotion of Mardi Gras . Beyond the nightlife, the Big Easy is famous for its flavorful cuisine and unique rich history. Make sure to take the time to appreciate both. Don't miss having a steaming bowl of gumbo or biting into a massive Po'boy. Follow it up with a visit to the  Ogden Museum of Southern Art , which explores the city's complex influences and longtime connection to the natural world.

A couple walks down the streets of Brooklyn laughing happily.

7. New York City

A graduation trip can also be an opportunity to test out potential places you may want to live. For many, that means New York City . Visit before you commit to living here: it's busy, loud, (sometimes) stinky and eye-openingly wonderful. But it's not for everyone. For this test run, spend your time checking out galleries and parks while eating at some amazing restaurants. It will be a pricey trip, no matter how hard you try to budget. Still, it's a great chance to meet new people and try every cuisine you can imagine. Make sure to catch the train to Brooklyn for an afternoon in the Botanical Gardens .

8. South Africa

Not ready to stop learning? Head to South Africa . With a tumultuous and storied history, a trip to this stunning country can be life-changing. Apartheid isn't that far in the rearview mirror, and its lasting effects are visible across much of the nation. Dedicate time to visiting some of the historical sites in Johannesburg, such as the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill , a former prison turned Constitutional Court. Then, hit the beach to surf some famous waves at Addington Beach along the iconic Golden Mile or catch glimpses of South Africa's diverse wildlife in the expansive Kruger National Park . Keep your eyes peeled for big cats, elephants, rhinos and more. Find time to catch at least one sunset from the top of Table Mountain . Its unmatched views are accessible by cable car in Cape Town.

GettyImages-173070430.jpg

With stunning fjords, shooting geysers, natural hot springs and the northern lights – Iceland offers an otherworldly reset from your studies. A nature-first vacation, try and dedicate some time beyond the beautiful capital Reykjavik . You'll need a large budget to chase waterfalls, sip pints and toast your graduation in Iceland, but you'll look at the world entirely anew.

10. Florence, Italy

Florence offers a decadence and youthfulness that is easier to access than in Rome or Naples , and its Renaissance beauty will fill your aching heart if you don't want to leave university or college. Marvel at Botticelli's masterpiece, the Birth of Venus, in the Uffizi and wander the expansive Boboli Gardens . Luxuriate with two-hour dinners on one of their many piazzas, climb to the top of the fabled Duomo to take in the rolling hills in the distance. There is so much to love about Florence, but like most major cities in Italy, it can be expensive, but it's the price you pay to heal your heartache.

He graduated at the top of his class, and already has a job, so would need to travel late May or June 2013, before he reports for work July 1.

I think a tour is the way to go, but being 22, I don't want him stuck with a group of seniors.

Price isn't an issue.

Are there any companies that conduct tours for such kids?

' class=

Have a look at Explore, InsideJapan Tours, exodus etc, they will have tours in April and May and if you ask them they should tell you the ages (approx) of the other people booked on...

' class=

GAdventures is geared for the young (20's and 30's).

I have been to the Galapagos with them and was one of only two participants over 40. Some people on my trip had taken other trips with the company and had enjoyed them very much.

http://www.gadventures.com/trips/discover-japan/AJDJ/2013/

However, Inside Japan specialises in Japan, which has certain advantages. I haven't taken any of their group tours, but the Self-Guided Adventure and the two tailored trips I have had organised by them were a miracle of smooth planning and integrity.

I met some of their employees (most of whom lead groups) at the London Destinations Show and was surprised at how young they were.

(I had only used email and the telephone for planning my trips)

Inside Japan caters to all ages, but you could ask which tours have lots of you people on them. Some of the tours are quite athletic, which propabaly lowers the average age of those trips.

10 Graduation Trip Ideas for Every Budget and Travel Style

From Peru to Paris, these are some of the best trips to take after graduation.

japan graduation trip

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

Everyone travels for a different reason. For some, travel is an adventure, a way to discover all that the world has to offer. Others use it as a means of escaping everyday stresses. It’s also one of the best ways to celebrate life’s biggest moments, whether it’s a new beginning, an exciting achievement, or both. Graduation certainly falls into the latter category, and you’ll often see those earning a high school, college, or post-grad diploma marking the accomplishment with a memorable travel experience. Plus, this is an occasion that’s often accompanied by the rare chance to travel without missing classes or taking off work. So if there’s ever a good time to go on that trip you’ve always dreamed about, it’s right after graduation.

When it comes to graduation trips, there are no hard-and-fast rules about how or where you should travel; they can run the gamut from quick beach weekends to week-long, multi-country adventures. It all depends on your preference, budget, and availability. To help narrow down your choices, we spoke with two of Travel + Leisure ’s trusted A-List advisors, Maria Diego of Diego Travel and Jean Sanz of JSB Journeys , to curate a list of the best graduation trip ideas.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

When you want a graduation trip with lots of sunshine, salt water, and beautiful scenery, but you don’t want a super long flight, choose Costa Rica, T+L’s 2024 Destination of the Year . “The proximity to the U.S. makes this a quick jump over if time is of the essence,” Sanz tells T+L. Start your journey by indulging in a bit of luxurious relaxation — “You can enjoy hot springs and hang out with friends at The Springs Resort & Spa while sipping on a drink as you overlook the Arenal Volcano,” says Sanz  — then move on to something more active. There are numerous hiking opportunities in this biodiverse country, ranging from beginner to more advanced trails. If you’re really looking to challenge yourself, embark on the 174-mile Camino de Costa Rica .

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

Thinking about a West Coast trip? San Diego could be in the cards. The Southern California city is known for its warm, dry summers, and there are plenty of activities to fill an itinerary, no matter your interests. If you want an active graduation trip, book a surf lesson with Surf Diva , hike Torrey Pines State Park Loop, and practice your swing at the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course . For a trip that’s centered around art, explore the collections at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego , The San Diego Museum of Art , and the Mingei International Museum . If you want to do nothing but lounge by the beach or pool, check into Hotel del Coronado or The Lodge at Torrey Pines for a few extra-luxe nights.

Eleanor Scriven/robertharding/Travel + Leisure

While Diego notes that she wouldn’t recommend St. Barts for a high school graduation trip, it is a special, celebratory destination that could be a good option for those graduating from college. In Diego’s words, it’s an “island that outshines them all,” and if you visit in the late summer (as opposed to the popular winter season), you’ll often see lower prices and fewer crowds. “ Eden Rock is always a popular choice if you want to see and be seen, or if you're looking for more of a hideaway with an ultra-chic clientele and [a] lower-key beach club, I recommend Le Toiny ,” she says.

Buenos Aires and Patagonia

“Aside from the fact that it should be on everyone's bucket list, Buenos Aires is an eclectic cosmopolitan city, with cocktail bars, nightclubs, and an incredible food scene,” says Sanz. After spending a few days in the city, make your way to Patagonia , where you’ll need your hiking boots, waterproof layers, and plenty of bug spray and sunscreen. “You can hike from camp to camp as you overlook the amazing Fitz Roy mountain and end in a fabulous adventure lodge like Explora . The food and the dramatic landscapes are also a great way to treat yourself as you walk into a new world,” she adds.

National Park Road Trip

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

“A road trip is always a great way to celebrate a milestone. We have some of the most beautiful parks and animals on the planet in our own backyard,” says Diego. If you’re planning an extended graduation trip, spread out over several weeks, you could try to plot out some of our nation’s biggest national parks out West— from the Great Sand Dunes to Zion — and check them all off on an epic road trip. But if you’re only planning on traveling for about a week, and you still want to see some impressive wildlife and scenery, head to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, which are about an hour’s drive from one another. Most travelers fly into Jackson Hole Airport, the only commercial airport within a U.S. national park, and use Jackson Hole as their base camp for exploring Grand Teton National Park over a period of two to three days. Yellowstone takes a bit more time; plan on spending three to four days traversing the park and checking off your top highlights and points of interest.

New York City

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

New York City has something for everyone — and that includes recent grads. If it’s your first time in the Big Apple, you’ll probably want to experience all of the classics: a Yankees game, Central Park, a slice at a quintessential pizzeria, a Broadway show, and some of New York City’s best museums , including The Metropolitan Museum of Art , The Guggenheim , and The Whitney . It’ll be a packed trip, so don’t forget your best walking shoes; depending on your schedule, you’ll probably end up trekking multiple miles as you make your way through the boroughs. While NYC isn’t known as a particularly cheap destination, it does have a whole host of free things to do if you’re looking to keep costs down.

guenterguni/Getty Images

“I think Africa is the perfect option for a graduation trip, particularly gorilla trekking in Rwanda ,” says Diego. “In order to do the chimpanzee and gorilla treks, the minimum age requirement is 18, which would be a fantastic age to have this experience.” She also suggests starting your trip at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in the capital of Rwanda: “While extremely sad, it is very educational and sets a context for the entirety of the trip.  Once you see the history of what this small country has gone through, and overcome, it changes you in a very impactful way.  I can't think of a better gift to share with a young adult than the entire experience that is Rwanda.”

London and Paris

Leopoldine Bauer/Travel + Leisure

Out of all the cities in the world, London and Paris are two of the most iconic — and they’re only two hours apart by train. Start your trip in the Big Smoke, where you can cheers to your diploma over Champagne afternoon tea at The Ritz and get your steps in while walking through Green Park, St. James’s Park, and some of the city’s most picturesque neighborhoods. Rest up at The Laslett , an expertly designed boutique hotel in Notting Hill, before hopping aboard the Eurostar to Paris. You may have a long list of must-sees in the City of Lights, but leave time for the best parts of a Parisian adventure: leisurely coffee breaks at cafés, croissant and baguette runs, and a long stroll down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. For a particularly memorable stay in Paris, Diego recommends Le Grand Contrôle , “the hotel in the Château de Versailles that allows special access without the crowds.”

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

Travelers might want to use this time off to tour Peru, the home of Machu Picchu and part of the Amazon rainforest. “Hiking the last part of the Inca Trail and arriving at the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu gives you a mystical sense of being — and [it’s] a great feeling of freedom to have after several years of university,” says Sanz. She suggests staying at the Palacio del Inka in Cusco, where you can sip piscos on your balcony, and leaving time for Lima. When in the capital, follow Sanz’s advice and “explore the culinary delights of Mayta [and its] fantastic cocktail menu.”

When the only thing you want to do after graduation is soak up some sun on the beach, look no further than Charleston . The Holy City is known for its laidback lifestyle, and there are several beaches within driving distance of the downtown area. Folly Beach is where you’ll find kitschy beach shops, amazing seafood restaurants, and opportunities to surf. Sullivan’s Island is a bit quieter, but its main street, Middle Street, becomes a hub of activity on summer weekends. If the whole family is joining your grad trip, book a stay at Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms. No matter which beach you choose, you’ll be able to find plenty of R&R before starting your next life chapter.

30 Epic Graduation Trip Ideas (2024 USA & International)

30 graduation trip ideas

Whether you have a senior in high school or college, graduation is something to be celebrated! Some may want a party, a car, or help with their college tuition, but many would love to celebrate this accomplishment with a dream trip. As the school year begins its rapid roll toward the inevitable end of an era, it is time to start thinking about graduation trip ideas.

A grad trip serves the double purpose of celebrating the completion of this phase of schooling and an enticement for those fledglings to return to the nest from time to time. We put together a list of options for my high school senior to choose from and for those of you looking for high school graduation trip ideas, college graduation trip ideas, or senior trip ideas, I have some great suggestions for you!

Teen girl in ripped jeans and a white sweater and hat with arms up in front of a valley

The thing to consider though when planning a high school or college graduation trip is that while you may want it to be a bucket list experience or a trip of a lifetime; if you really want to take a trip right after graduation in May or June, you need to keep the season in mind.

Summer is the high season for family travel, which means crowds, peak pricing, and a need for advance planning. If you can travel in early to mid-June, you can avoid the high peak that starts in early July as European schools let out for the summer.

It is also an ideal time to visit destinations in the Northern Hemisphere, but Southern Hemisphere destinations vary in attractiveness from June-August as they experience their winter months. So forget the idea of seeing penguins in Antarctica and it may not be ideal for hiking in Patagonia or New Zealand either unless you want to wait for Christmas break. But there are still so many fantastic destinations to choose from.

15 U.S. Graduation Trip Ideas

Even if you have traveled extensively in the United States, there are still so many destinations and experiences that can make a graduation trip truly special. Here are a few that particularly shine in June.

lighting torch at sunset on Black Rock on Maui

The exotic allure of the Aloha State may be the perfect balm after a stressful senior year. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only place in the United States to see a live volcano, while Maui is the perfect place for adventure activities like sunrise cycling down a volcanic crater or driving the road to Hana.

Just keep in mind that June through November is technically hurricane season, although big storms are rare. We visited in late June and had pretty great weather, with just some rainstorms that delivered beautiful rainbows. Find out how much a family trip to Hawaii costs .

Bear in river

Summer is the best time to visit Alaska. An Alaskan cruise is definitely a great way to see the most popular ports in Alaska, but to get a real sense of this vast and rugged state, you need to spend some time on land too (and not just on excursions .) If planning a trip to Alaska feels too daunting, you can join one of Austin Adventures’ group family trips, like the one to Kenai Fjords and Peninsula .

You can experience calving glaciers, search for wildlife, and experience the brilliance of the Midnight Sun in the Last Frontier.

Yosemite National Park, California

Women with arms up overlooking view in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park can get crazily crowded in the summer, but if you go early enough in June, you can get there before the worst of the crowds and when the water is still strong, resulting in beautiful, powerful waterfalls. (See this guide to easy hikes in Yosemite .)

Listen to our podcast episode on Yosemite National Park for ideas on the best places to stay, hikes, and other things to do in Yosemite .

Glacier National Park, Montana

Boat on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. National Parks system and getting a reservation in the summer can be challenging. But head to Glacier Country in early summer to beat the crowds and get better rates. Just keep in mind that there will still be snow on the ground, and it is likely that parts of the Going-to-the-Sun road that connect the parts of the park will still be closed until sometime in July, although I was there in mid-June last year and it was open.

But there is still plenty of hiking and wildlife viewing to enjoy (plus a chance to see glaciers!). After a few days in the park, you can enjoy some fun adventures near Glacier or relax at Flathead Lake Lodge, an all-inclusive dude ranch , or spend time exploring more of Western Montana .

Walt Disney World, Florida

Magic Kingdom castle from across the lake

From weddings to birthdays, every special occasion is a good fit for a trip to Disney for lovers of magic and the mouse. It might be the perfect time to splurge on a VIP tour to make the trip extra special.

While there are plenty of rides at Disney that teens love, thrill-seekers will also like adding on a few days at Universal or some of the water parks , especially for those hot June days. And when it rains, try some of these nearby Orlando attractions .

There are two huge downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer — the crowds and the heat. But, if you go in June it is a little more manageable, especially if you go to the less-visited North Rim, which doesn’t even open until mid-May.

To make the trip extra special, and thrilling, you can arrange for helicopter flights over the canyon, mule rides or hikes into the canyon, or multi-day float trips along the Colorado River. You can also make this part of an epic southwest road trip .

New York, New York

View of lower Manhattan at sunset from the Empire State building

Bright lights, big city — if your graduate has never visited the Big Apple, a visit to New York City can make a great graduation trip. Get tickets for the must-see Broadway show. Visit museums. Take a food tour. Go shopping. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Make sure you fit in some of the newer attractions like Hudson Yards, Summit at One Vanderbilt, Little Island @ Pier 55, the 9/11 Memorial, the Highline, or even try the new Edge NYC Skydeck. Teens also love Instagramable food stops like rainbow bagels, taiyakis, specialty cupcakes, crazy milkshakes, and more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas sign with city skyline behind

College grads may enjoy exercising some of their new liberties in Las Vegas, but even high school graduates can enjoy under-21 attractions. The hotels along Vegas’ famous Strip are a spectacle in and of itself. Add to that one-of-a-kind entertainment, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and thrills like the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere Hotel, FlyOver Las Vegas , or the SkyJump off the Stratosphere Tower.

Of course outside of Las Vegas, you can also go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, visit Hoover Dam, or drive a luxury sports car or race car.

California Coast

Tips for driving Highway One on the California Coast

Rent a convertible and take your grad on a classic U.S. road trip down the California coast . Start off with a few days in San Francisco , then head down to Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea . Next, take your time exploring the beautiful coastline along Highway 1 down to Big Sur.

On the central coast, you can ride on the sand dunes, zip line through a winery, and enjoy all the small beach towns on your way to Los Angeles . Finish off with surf lessons in Huntington Beach, a tour of Universal Studios, or a day at Disneyland. If you have a college grad you can even add on a few days in Sonoma or Paso Robles for wine tasting.

Puerto Rico

El Yunque rainforest in Puerto Rico with mist over mountains

Craving an island vacation? You don’t need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. There you can enjoy gorgeous beaches, the El Yunque rainforest, outdoor adventures, and soak up the history in Old San Juan.

In Vieques and elsewhere on the island, you can even experience the magic of bioluminescence with a nighttime kayaking excursion.

Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks

Delicate arch in Arches National Park (from Canva)

Things are starting to heat up in the southwest in June, but you can still fit in an epic trip to all five of Utah’s national parks — Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks. Or, if you really enjoy hiking and getting off the beaten path, focus on just a couple of the parks. If you are visiting two parks or more, be sure to invest in the National Parks Pass .

Start off in Salt Lake City and then head to Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. Next, head over to Capitol Reef and Bryce. Finish up in St. George and Zion National Park. You can then fly out of Las Vegas or loop back up to Salt Lake City. Be sure to listen to this podcast for some great tips on off-the-beaten-path stops on a Southwest Grand Circle road trip or read my friend Lesli’s Utah National Parks road trip itinerary .

Maine Windjammer Cruise

Schooner Heritage on the water

Large ship cruising may not be your cup of tea, but there are other small ship possibilities available. If your student loves sailing, then a trip aboard one of the Maine Windjammer cruises will be right up their alley. Enjoy gourmet meals and lobster bakes on the beach. Assist the crew and enjoy watching the scenic coastline glide by. Explore the rugged coastline and small seaside towns of the Maine coast .

For a real splurge, book cabins with your friends and family for a group vacation on the sea. Pair it up with a Coastal Maine road trip or a fun glamping stay near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

Key West, Florida

Florida Keys Overseas Highway

One of my favorite east coast road trips is along the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys . This scenic trip is great for graduates that love water sports — like windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

It is also a perfect spot for future marine biologists to visit a sea turtle hospital, explore marine preserves, study dolphins, and enjoy nature up close. Of course, all the key lime pie is also a great perk!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Balconies in the French Quarter New Orleans

Your foodie teen will enjoy a trip to the Big Easy for a food and music extravaganza. Enjoy food tours, cooking classes, and everything from celebrity-chef restaurants to the best of diners, drive-ins, and dives.

Then soak in the culture with history tours (or ghost tours), a visit to Mardi Gras World, and plenty of live jazz music. If you have time to get out of town, be sure to try an airboat tour!

Black Hills, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore

There are tons of ways for teens and young adults to seek adventure in the Black Hills . You can bike along the Mickelson Trail, one of the old rail trails that runs for 108.8 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood. Don’t worry, you don’t need to bike the whole thing. Instead, you can rent bikes and arrange for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs to only bike as far as you choose. There is also go rock climbing, horseback riding, and enjoy amazing wildlife viewing in Custer State Park.

Be sure to leave extra days for side ventures to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and the stunning Badlands National Park . And even if they haven’t had enough of learning for a while, make sure to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Minuteman Missile Silo Historic Site.

15 International Graduation Trip Ideas

There are so many bucket list destinations that are great places to visit in June for a graduation trip. Here are a few options for adventure seekers, outdoor lovers, cultural explorers, and wildlife lovers.

Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsness

June is my absolute favorite time to visit Iceland, especially if you can be there for the Summer Solstice. Just be aware that many businesses and attractions are closed on June 17th for Iceland Independence Day. The weather is starting to warm up and you have full days of sunlight to explore.

Iceland is the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers. Spend a few days on the gorgeous South Coast chasing waterfalls, visiting black sand beaches, hiking on glaciers, and sailing between the icebergs. To get away from the crowds, spend a few days up in the rugged and remote West Fjords . Find out how much a trip to Iceland costs and read my Iceland travel tips .

family in Shinsekai

It took us until my daughter was in college to finally get to Japan, but this bucket list destination is perfect for a graduation trip. Immersing yourselves in a new culture is great practice for the new challenges that lie ahead for your grad. While things will be heating up in June and you can expect some rain, your grad will love exploring the food, shopping, and cultural quirkiness that lies side-by-side with ancient shrines and temples.

If you can spend two weeks in Japan , it would be ideal for getting to see Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka , with time for a day trip or two as well.

Giants Causeway Northern Ireland

With a drinking age of 18, graduates might enjoy some newfound freedoms in the pubs of Ireland — after all, what better place to soak in the Irish culture? Start off in Dublin , and then head off to Northern Ireland and the Coastal Causeway .

In the Republic of Ireland, don’t miss the Cliffs of Moher and a drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. The town of Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula are some of my favorite spots in Ireland. Find out how much a trip to Ireland costs and tips for traveling to Ireland .

Azores, Portugal

waterfall at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes

Natural beauty abounds in the Azores , the archipelago of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic. In June, big hydrangea blooms decorate the island in a mix of pinks, purples, and blues. This is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers, particularly on the island of Pico, home to the Mount Pico volcano. For adventure seekers, you can go coasteering, canyoning, hiking, surfing, and more on the largest island of São Miguel .

Finish up with a few days on the mainland enjoying the colorful festivals taking place in Lisbon or Porto . The Azores are a great destination for the grad that likes to do something different than everyone else and its blend of the best of Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland make it truly unique.

Path across water to Naxos town

A week or two spent island hopping in the Cyclades is a perfect way to chill out after the exhaustion of final exams. Mid-June through mid-July is the perfect time to visit. The islands of Santorini and Mykonos are jammed in the summer, especially once the cruise ships start coming to port, but you can still avoid crowds on smaller islands like Naxos or spread out on Crete . The weather is warm but not scorching hot, and the daytime winds are not as strong as later in the summer.

Start off in Mykonos or Santorini for an introduction to the Greek Islands’ party scene, and then spend some time at some of the quieter islands, like Naxos, Paros, Crete, or some of the off-the-beaten-track islands. Find out how much a trip to Greece costs or check out our 10-day Greece itinerary.

Tuscan hillside

Like much of Europe, Italy is beautiful in early June, before the heat and tourists descend. You will want to hit the highlights in Rome and Florence , but then take some time to relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside where you can bike through vineyards and swim in thermal pools.

You may even be able to arrange to test drive a Ferrari or sample the culinary delights in Bologna or Parma on your way to Venice . Finish up with some hiking in the Italian Dolomites. In June you are guaranteed sunny days and warm evenings in the mountains, with not too much humidity. After a day of hiking or biking, enjoy the local culinary delicacies over lunch at a mountain rifugio or a slopeside picnic.

If your grad prefers lazing on the beach, skip the gondolas and mountains and head down to the Amalfi Coast or the gorgeous island of Capri . Just make your reservations early and don’t be surprised to be rubbing elbows with newlyweds and retirees.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

History buffs (and Game of Thrones fans) will love the medieval city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast. June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds and cruise ships arrive in July and August.

To escape the crowds, the best way to explore Croatia is by boat. Charter a sailboat and head out on the Adriatic Sea to nearby Lokrum Island or further to Korcula, one of the more charming islands in Croatia. There are also adventure activities for active teens such as biking trips, hiking, and water sports.

Switzerland

Matterhorn behind a blue lake and green fields in Switzerland

Your young adventurer may enjoy hiking in the Swiss Alps after graduation. It can still be rainy in May and early June, or snowy at higher altitudes, so shoot for late June or even early July. There are many routes for hut-to-hut (or hotel-to-hotel) hiking. Or you can settle in near Interlaken and soak in the scenery and outdoor adventures.

Interlaken is home to many extreme sports, including mountaineering, bungee jumping, zorbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, helicopter skydiving, white water rafting, canyoning, ice climbing, rock climbing, trekking, and so much more.

Art lovers will also want to check out the international art show at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which draws top artists from around the world. In Basel, you can also bike to three countries in one day! Bike to France and have a croissant, have a beer and lunch in Germany, and return to Switzerland and float down the river before dinner.

Dad and teen in Paris

The weather in Paris in June is perfect, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and there are long days of sunshine to explore the city at its most romantic. Of course, summer is also when the tourists descend so it is critical to go in June (the earlier the better) before school lets out for summer in France and the United Kingdom.

Even so, it is important to book early for prime locations (see my guide for renting an apartment in Paris ) and attractions (reservations and/or timed entry tickets are needed for many attractions, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.)

It is also a city where you can give your teen a little independence to practice language skills and prepare to go out on their own. Indulge your graduate’s interests in art, history, or food with private tours and cooking classes. Find out how much a trip to Paris costs , check out our 5-day Paris itinerary , and download our Paris trip planning checklist .

South Africa

Zebras on savannah in Tanzania (from Canva)

June to August is winter in South Africa, but it is also the ideal time to book a safari in Kruger or other parks. The game viewing is ideal because the bush is less dense, but the beautiful golden grasses capture the light and provide excellent photo opportunities. Plus, the dry weather typically means few to no mosquitos!

While June is typically the rainy season in Cape Town, it has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. The city is surrounded by beaches and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for adventure from cage-diving with sharks to zip-lining through mountains and forests. Your graduate can also snorkel with seals or go sea kayaking with penguins. There is also the potential to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast between June and November.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable experience, and June is a great time to see it. In the Western Corridor area, you can find herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras as they make their way north in search of food, water, and breeding grounds.

Because June falls within Serengeti’s dry season, you’ll find less foliage, making animals easier to spot, as well as fewer mosquitos. The temperature is moderate and pleasant during the day, but chilly for early morning safaris or nights in the safari tents. This is truly a bucket list experience for families.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

While technically winter, the weather is never too terribly cold in Australia and you will find good deals on flights and hotels. It is also a perfect time to see the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little rain so diving conditions are at their peak — perfect for checking scuba diving off a bucket list.

Beyond the Reef, northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia are at their best in June. Remember, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

Palm tree and white sand in Fiji

If a tropical escape is what your student needs to relax, set your sights a bit further than the Caribbean all the way to the South Pacific. It is also technically winter in Fiji in June, but the temps never get too cold and you can just miss the summer rush that starts in July. June is one of the best months to visit Fiji, with ideal weather, countless activity options, cheaper hotel rates, and smaller crowds.

From the rich Fijian culture to the incredible beaches, there are countless reasons why Fiji’s 333 islands are the perfect vacation destination for a graduation trip.

Machu Picchu in Peru

Does your student love to learn about ancient civilizations or archeology? Summer is a great time to visit the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. Start your journey in Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital city, or Cusco, a scenic three-hour train ride from Machu Picchu. Just be sure to give yourself time to adjust to the altitude, especially if you are considering hiking in the Sacred Valley. Reservations are also needed at this popular tourist destination.

The Amazon’s dry season starts in June, so you can pair a visit to Machu Picchu with time spent exploring the rainforest or traveling the Amazon by boat.

View of pools and beach at Ritz Carlton Aruba from above

Sitting below the hurricane belt, Aruba, along with its neighboring islands of Bonaire and Curaçao, enjoys a dry season in the summer. Yet since summer in the Caribbean isn’t high on many people’s lists, you can also enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds.

Off-road on this desert island, go horseback riding on the beach, enjoy sunset catamaran sails, and spend some time with flamingoes on this Dutch island.

Once you have booked your dream trip to celebrate your graduate, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance! US, Japan to make 'historic' announcements at summit: Official

ABCNews logo

When President Joe Biden hosts Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House for an official visit Wednesday, a senior administration official tells ABC News the two countries will make "historic" announcements that will take the U.S.-Japan alliance to "new heights."

This official said the leaders will unveil more than 70 programs and initiatives. Many of the announcements will focus on deepening defense ties, furthering cooperation between Japan and other allies, and new updates on Japan's efforts to acquire Tomahawk land attack missiles from the U.S.

The summit is also expected to include steps that would allow the countries to work on joint development -- and potentially co-production -- of vital military and defense equipment, according to Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell in remarks last week.

There will also be new cooperation in space, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and climate change, the official said.

Ukraine and Gaza on the agenda

The leaders are expected to discuss a wide range of topics, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

The visit underscores how the mutual threat from China, North Korea and Russia are driving these two allies even closer together. The two countries want to deter China and prepare for any conflict that could emerge. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has made Japan more worried about China trying to move on Taiwan.

A state visit is a huge honor, and it signals to the world how close the relationship is and marks milestones in the relationship.

Philippines president to join summit

On Thursday, the Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will join the two leaders for a summit.

The senior official said it's important for these leaders to be standing "shoulder-to-shoulder" at a time when the Philippines is facing "extraordinary pressure" from China in the South China Sea, with China engaging in "really dangerous and unlawful tactics over the course of the last many months."

How did the state visit come about?

Prime Minister Kishida and President Biden have met nearly a dozen times since Kishida took office about two and a half years ago. The official says they "have a very warm personal and working relationship."

The official added that Biden and national security adviser Jake Sullivan expressed interest in hosting Kishida after the president saw him at Camp David for the historic trilateral summit last August with the U.S., Japan, and South Korea.

The president, the official said, felt "strongly" about wanting to "honor a friend" who has shown "courage" in resolving past tensions with North Korea, stepping up support to Ukraine, and someone who has been "bucking a lot of conventions" in Japanese politics and foreign policy, the official said.

Japan’s Kishida, ahead of US trip, seeks stronger military ties with Washington and other partners

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Friday he wants to strengthen military and weapons development cooperation with the United States as well as with other countries such as the Philippines, as he prepares for a visit to the U.S. next week to meet with President Joe Biden .

“Defense industry cooperation between Japan and the United States, as well as with like-minded countries, are extremely important,” Kishida said in an interview Friday with selected foreign media, including The Associated Press, at the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Within the Japan-U.S. alliance, I do hope to steadily improve deterrence and response capability,” he said.

Kishida said Japan hopes to promote security cooperation in areas including defense equipment and technology. “By building multi-layered networks of cooperation, we can further expand and strengthen our deterrence capability,” he said.

During his April 8-14 trip to the U.S., Kishida will hold talks with Biden at the White House on Wednesday, followed by a trilateral summit with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. the next day.

Kishida is the first Japanese leader to visit Washington as a state guest since then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2015, who revised the interpretation of Japan’s pacifist Constitution to allow its self-defense-only principle to also cover its ally, the United States.

Japanese officials hope to showcase a rock-solid Japan-U.S. alliance in a number of areas, but a deepening of security and defense ties and an expansion of arms co-development are expected to top the agenda for Kishida’s visit.

Since adopting a more expansive national security strategy in 2022, Kishida’s government has taken bold steps to accelerate the country’s military buildup and hopes to show it’s willing and capable of elevating its security cooperation with the United States. Kishida has pledged to double defense spending and boost deterrence against an increasingly assertive China, which Japan considers a security threat.

Japan, working to acquire what it calls a “counterstrike” capability, has purchased 400 U.S. Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles. After prohibiting almost all weapons exports, it has relaxed export guidelines twice in recent months, allowing the sale of lethal weapons to countries from which they were licensed and overseas sales of a fighter jet it’s co-developing with the U.K. and Italy. The changes have also allowed Japan to ship Japanese-made PAC-3 missiles to the United States to help replace those contributed by Washington to Ukraine.

The two leaders are also expected to agree to start discussions on establishing a unified command on each side, seen as a major structural change to enhance interoperability and response capability. They are also expected to agree on a plan to establish a new framework for weapons co-development, and to allow repair and maintenance of U.S. warships in Japan to support their operation in the Western Pacific.

Japan and the United States are both stepping up defense ties with the Philippines over shared concerns about China’s role in the region. The three leaders are expected to discuss a strengthening of security cooperation as tensions rise between China and the Philippines over their rival territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Biden during his meeting with Kishida and the trilateral summit wants to show that the three nations are in lockstep in their concerns about increasingly aggressive Chinese action against Philippine coast guard and supply vessels off the disputed Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea, according to senior Biden administration official.

The official, who requested anonymity to preview the meetings, said the U.S. is looking to clearly signal to Beijing “that we are three totally aligned maritime democracies who share the same views of how the South China Sea should be governed under international law.”

Another key area of cooperation is space. Kishida and Biden are expected to confirm Japan’s participation in NASA’s Artemis moon program and its contribution of a moon rover developed by Toyota Motor Corp. and the participation of an astronaut. The rover, which comes at a roughly $2 billion cost, is the most expensive contribution to the mission by a non-U.S. partner to date, the official said.

The U.S. and Japan are also expected to announce plans aimed at boosting the number of Japanese students studying at U.S. universities. There has been drop-off in Japanese students in the U.S. in recent years, a trend exacerbated by the COVID pandemic and weakening of the yen.

During his visit, Kishida also plans to highlight Japan’s economic contributions in the United States to gain the understanding of the American public regardless of who wins this year’s presidential election. He will meet with business leaders and visit Toyota’s electric vehicle battery factory under construction for a planned launch in 2025 and Honda’s business jet subsidiary in North Carolina.
