Alicante - Alacant

Region of Valencia

Located in the Marina Baixa region in Alicante, Benidorm is one of the top tourist destinations on the Costa Blanca, thanks to its excellent beaches and its wide range of accommodation, restaurants and leisure activities.

Its historic centre stands on a promontory, and contrasts with the broad avenues lined with buildings, shops and outdoor cafés which extend five kilometres along the coastline. Benidorm offers a whole range of possibilities: from strolling along the seafront promenade or swimming in the sea, to enjoying a range of water sports or taking a boat trip to the island of Benidorm. …Not to mention the various local festivities , and its mouth-watering cuisine featuring rice and fish as its star ingredients.

Benidorm is one of the most important tourist resorts on Alicante’s Costa Blanca . Its fine sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and outstanding year-round climate have made it justly famous, and it also has a full range of first rate infrastructures and services. But there is no doubt that Benidorm’s greatest attraction is its marvellous beaches. Its five kilometres of coastline are home to endless sandy beaches and secluded coves where holidaymakers can enjoy a refreshing swim, or try their hand at any one of the numerous water sports on offer: scuba diving, water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, etc. Situated to the north of the port, the Levante beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the city. Its location in the town itself, as well as being handy for a whole range of services, also makes for easy access to these over two kilometres of fine golden sand. This emblematic beach is set against a busy seafront promenade which is dotted with pavement cafés and restaurants, and is also the site of a lively nightlife. The Poniente beach stretches for some three kilometres to the south of the town. Like the Levante beach, it is also set against the backdrop of a long seafront promenade and offers a full range of services, as well as being accessible and convenient. Between these two famous beaches in Benidorm lies the Mal Pas , a tranquil cove with fine sand, near the historic part of town and the port. Ti Ximo and La Almadrava are at the southernmost end of Benidorm, where the coastline becomes rockier and more difficult to access. At some distance from the centre of town, these secluded natural coves offered the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town, and to enjoy scuba diving or snorkelling on the magnificent rocky seabed.

City and leisure

The historic centre of Benidorm stands on a promontory located between the two main beaches, the Levante and Poniente. This was the original site of the city, a primitive fishing village overlooked by the church of San Jaime . Built in the 18th century, its blue domes rise above a network of narrow streets and picturesque corners. The Cerro Canfali rock gives onto the viewing point known as the Balcón del Mediterráneo (“balcony over the Mediterranean”), which offers outstanding views over the sea. Both sides of the historic part of town lie the broad avenues and streets lined with shops and businesses which are part of modern Benidorm. Everything in this city is geared to the enjoyment of holidaymakers, and it offers a wide range of services, including numerous hotel establishments , restaurants and outdoor cafes and bars. Benidorm has infinite leisure options: everything from strolling along the endless seafront promenade to visiting places such as the central L’Aigüera park , or spending an unforgettable day at the Mediterranean theme park of Terra Mítica. It is also home to various sports facilities, including a sailing school and several scuba-diving schools. Boat trips depart from the port to the small island of Benidorm in the centre of the bay. Legend has it that the island is made from a piece from the nearby Puig Campana rock, which the brave warrior Roland cut off with his sword during a raid by Charlemagne. Its rich seabed makes this a paradise for scuba divers.

Gastronomy, festivities and the surroundings

The local gastronomy is known predominantly for its fish and rice dishes. Paella is one of its most emblematic dishes, together with shellfish –either grilled or steamed– and casseroled or fried fish, or fish stew. Garlic and olive oil are the main components of the mayonnaise-type sauce known as ali-oli , which is served to accompany numerous dishes. Typical desserts from Alicante include almond tart, turron (almond and honey nougat) and ice cream. The region has several wines with the Alicante Designation of Origin label , including misteleta (sweet wine); it is also famous for its horchata (a milky drink made with tiger nuts, and protected with the designation of origin label). Benidorm is a festive town which loves to party. The festivities in honour of the city’s patron saints, the Virgin del Sufragio and San Jaime Apóstol , take place from the second Sunday in November and feature a wide variety of events, including a parade of floats, theatrical re-enactments and fireworks. A few days later, the historic centre of the town becomes the site of the traditional and popular Festa de la Carxofa (artichoke festival). Other highlights on the calendar of events include the festival of the bonfires of San Juan and the Festival of Moors and Christians, both in June. The area around Benidorm is home to a range of exceptional natural attractions. To the north the terrain becomes more mountainous, and features cliffs and escarpments which reach down towards the sea, and also includes the nature reserve known as the Serra Gelada . This is the setting for villages such as L’Alfàs del Pi and Altea. The attractive town of Calpe is located beside the nature reserve of Peñón de Ifach , and harmoniously combines its perfectly conserved historic and architectural heritage with modern tourist infrastructures. To the south of Benidorm, sightseers can discover towns such as Villajoyosa , the capital of the Marina Baja region. Other places of interest in the interior to the south beyond the Sierra de Aitana mountains include Cocentaina , an important mediaeval town, and Alcoy/Alcoi, famous for its Moors and Christians festival, which has been declared a festivity of International Tourist Interest. Finally the mountains of Alicante also offer the chance to explore the Carrascal de la Font Roja nature reserve , in the area around Alcoy.

Benidorm Tourist Information + Insiders Guide to Benidorm…

Table of Contents

Benidorm is the most visited tourist resort on the Costa Blanca coast of Spain.

With great beaches, the Mediterranean Sea to swim in, a busy resort packed with bars, restaurants and clubs, no wonder this is so popular.

With the fifth largest population in the Alicante province, Benidorm is located  45 kilometers northeast of the city of Alicante, and just south of Altea.

It is the central destination on the Costa Blanca with it’s dominant skyline sometimes being called the “Manhattan of Spain” due to the high-rise tower blocks. The backdrop to Benidorm is the magnificent mountain range known as Sierra Helada.

Benidorm is certainly a place you will either love or hate as it divides opinion. Many expats choose to move to Benidorm .

Once a small fishing village, it has been heavily-developed though many would claim it  as over-developed – but then again it is good to have some resorts that have lots of bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

Yes Benidorm is busy and noisy but that attracts some great entertainers and lots of men and women looking for a good time. If you want a quiet, relaxing traditional Spanish tourist resort there are plenty of other alternatives to go to instead.

Benidorm is a big sprawling metropolis and although there’s no way we would think of living there, we love it! Many of you however are desperate to work in Benidorm !

Clearly it has something going for it as over 4 million visitors come here every year. Many of these are on organised package holidays from Britain where everything is included from flights, airport transfers, accommodation to food and drink (all-inclusive).

If you are looking for a no-frills holiday to Benidorm, a package holiday is usually your best option for finding a cheap holiday deal and is ideal for pensioners and OAP’s looking for some winter sun at a cheap and reasonable price.

benidorm-night

If you are not on an organised package holiday you may want to read our page on where the nearest airports to Benidorm are as well as airport transfer options and prices.

With a flying time of about two hours from most Northern European airports, long weekend breaks are becoming increasingly popular. Benidorm represents great value for money compared to other destinations. The price of food and drinks are low due to the amount of competition between bars and restaurants .

What is so special about Benidorm?

Of course it has two magnificent long beaches but so do many other coastal resorts nearby, no, what makes Benidorm special is the party atmosphere in the many bars and clubs specialising in tribute bands and shows, most of which are free. Drinks and food are famous for being cheap and great value Benidorm definitely has a reputation for being a party town popular with groups of males on stag weekends and ladies on hen weekends.

Is Benidorm a cheap holiday?

Yes it is, we are not sure where you could have a cheaper holiday. Lots of companies offer package holidays and accommodation, food and drink are extremely cheap due to the high competition here. If you want value for money, Benidorm is the place for you but if you want better more upmarket bars and restaurants you might want to consider other Spanish resorts such as nearby Alicante, Ibiza or Marbella.

Is it worth going to Benidorm?

Yes we think it is. We enjoy the friendly safe atmosphere – people are here to enjoy themselves and have a good time. The nightlife and entertainment is on a different scale to most other Spanish resorts. Prices for meals, alcoholic drinks are very reasonable and accommodation can be especially cheap if you rent an apartment between a group of you.

What sort of people go to Benidorm?

Things to do and see in benidorm.

Benidorm is rather unique in that it attracts many different segments of holidaymakers, for example many younger people visit Benidorm for the vibrant nightlife and the huge amount of bars, clubs and pubs.

Benidorm also attracts many pensioners and retirees who enjoy the many facilities such as restaurants and shops all very close together within walking distance and all with very reasonable prices.

Benidorm also attracts young families because of the fabulous beaches lined with the promenade full of lively bars with live music, restaurants and shops, and again your hotel or apartment is likely to be within a short walk.

Young families also enjoy the many options for excursions and activities and there are lots of things to do and see if you have children.

Consider taking your children to the Benidorm Circus, held every Sunday in the Benidorm Palace car park. Adults €16, kids €8.

Benidorm has suffered from a somewhat downmarket and tacky image being linked with being cheap and cheerful, full of fish and chip shops and brimming with drunk English lager louts.

Thankfully the Benidorm tourist board are now addressing this negative image and looking to take the resort more upmarket. It also should be pointed out that a tremendous amount of Spanish people enjoy holidays in Benidorm too.

Theme Parks

Terra-Mitica-ride

This makes Benidorm a great choice for a family holiday as it has something for everyone.

Terra Mitica is the biggest and best with many rollercoaster rides but also plenty of rides and shows for the little ones too.

Terra Natura and Aqua Natura are a zoo and water park next door to each other near Terra Mitica.

Aqualandia and Mundomar are sister parks within walking distance of the Levante area of Benidorm. Aqualandia is the water park with slides and pools and Mundomar is an aquatic sea-life marine style attraction.

The reason Benidorm has become so large and so popular is the beautiful setting with three miles of fine sandy beaches and crystal clear waters with  wonderful all-year round climate and hot sunny weather in the summer.

There are two wonderful long sandy beaches, Playa Poniente (sunset beach) and Playa Levante (sunrise beach), separated by a rocky promontory, the Canfali vantage point that offers great views in each direction. At the foot of this lookout point is the Mal Pas cove.

You can see the beaches live on our webcams page .

The main Benidorm beaches are long and wide although very crowded in summer. Levante (to the left) is busier than Poniete. There is also a very good beach south of Poniente at Finestrat.

Benidorm - Playa Poniente

There are no nudist beaches in Benidorm itself – the nearest beach for nude sunbathing would be Raco Conil – this is about 4km south of Benidorm towards Villajoyosa – take the N322 towards the casino near Villajoyosa and turn left at the casino (now closed) and follow the road down to the car park where you will find a small rocky cove. This is Raco Conil and a gathering place for naturists.

There are plenty of watersports available such as waterskiing and parasailing. For scuba-divers you can visit the Llosa reef teeming with sea-life.

Benidorm Old Town

Benidorm also has a lovely old town area inbetween the Levante and Poniente beaches. This area is very traditional, very Spanish and quite peaceful. This area is centred around the Canfali vantage point (Balcony of the Mediterranean) and the Parque de Elche.

The old town district has all the major shops of Benidorm as well as some good bars. The streets are narrow and winding. Be sure to see the San Jaime church with it’s landmark blue dome.

Benidorm has an area in the old town where you will find many gay bars, gay pubs, saunas and gay nightclubs. Some of these are also open to straight people – the Rich Bitch drag queen show is well-known.

Our gay Benidorm page has more detail.

Below is a video of the old town:

Boat trips to Peacock Island

peacock-island

You can catch a boat there from the port or even better catch the boat along the coast to Calpe. The waters are very clear and filled with schools of fish making it an ideal location for a scuba-diving trip.

You can also catch boat trips south to Tabarca island which is near the town of Santa Pola.

  • Benidorm Palace

The Benidorm Palace offers a Las Vegas-style show complete with dinner as well as dancers, flamenco, juggling, magicians and big band/orchestra. This venue has been featured many times on the well-known ITV television comedy series called Benidorm .

Indeed, many visitors to Benidorm try to find the locations used on the sets of the series. The hotel which is called the Solana is in reality the Sol Pelicanos Hotel. Neptunes Bar, where many hilarious scenes have been filmed, is a real bar called the Morgan’s Tavern which does have many good cabaret shows and tribute bands.

Visitors to Benidorm can enjoy a great variety of shopping from the markets, the cheap Chinese bazaars to the designer shops such as Zara at the La Marina Mall in Benidorm.

The Carrefour supermarket in Benidorm is a huge hypermarket with many types of food from Spanish to English (British) and also popular is the Iceland supermarket.

For more information see our shopping in Benidorm  page.

You can play golf in Benidorm at the Villaitana wellness golf and business sun resort. Villaitana has two 18-hole golf courses wearing the stamp of Nicklaus Design while the resort has a spa. Golf Villaitana’s telephone number is +34 966 815 000 and Villaitana Spa’s number is +34 966 816 063.

Accommodation

Benidorm is a very built up tourist resort and as such the capacity and rooms available for accommodation for short stays such as weekends or longer stays such as long-lets are great.

There is a tremendous choice of hotels as well as the most popular choice which are apartments to rent .

If you want to be in the heart of the action, near the English-Square with it’s many bars and nightclubs then try staying in the Playa Levante area – see our map of Benidorm .

We also have a page on camping in Benidorm .

Fiesta is the Spanish word for festival, basically it is one giant celebration and party almost always with fireworks.

Try plan a visit to Benidorm to coincide with one of the many fiestas for a glimpse into real Spanish culture. The best fiesta in Benidorm is the week-long celebration in November when Benidorm practically comes to a standstill – for dates see our dedicated fiesta page .

What To Do At Night

Benidorm nightlife is famous and one of the main reason so many people come here throughout the year, not just summer.

Needless to say Benidorm is packed with restaurants, pubs, bars, cafes and nightclubs, many of them English and Irish.

Popular bars and clubs include Jokers, Chaplins, Lennons, Cafe Benidorm, Red Dog Saloon, The Western Saloon Bar, Loch Ness, Bahamas, Champions, Sinatras and The Heartbreak. Infamous acts and shows include Sticky Vicky .

There are literally thousands of bars and pubs and drink prices are very low (often €1 a pint!).

As well as this there is a lot of free entertainment such as comedians, cabaret, dancers, live bands and tribute bands such as Queen and Westlife. This makes Benidorm a fun place for a hen weekend or stag weekend .

Moving to Benidorm

If you are thinking of moving to Spain and in particular Benidorm, then you must read our expat interview with Maria Marchenko of Mediterranean Properties below:

Maria, what would you say would be the advantages to living in Benidorm compared to other Costa Blanca towns?

The advantage is that in Benidorm you have a lot of life throughout the year which other Costa Blanca towns do not offer. You can go to bars and discos and enjoy the hustle and bustle if you want. Other towns have this only during the high season of summer and the rest of the year, you’ll probably be the unique person drinking beer.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

I don’t think that Benidorm would not suit somebody. It’s perfect both for families and for groups of friends who come here. It’s also great for bachelor parties.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

I would say that it depends on the season. In winter in Benidorm there are a lot of Spanish tourists alongside with Spanish property owners who come from other parts of Spain, especially from northern provinces. So, I would say that in summer the local population is 30% as the number of tourists increases very much. In winter the local population is around 60%.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

I love to go hiking in the mount of La Cala de Finestrat that offers incredible sea views. Besides if you take the right path you can come up with the nudist beach with its chiringuito (summer beach bar) where you can do snorkeling and see the fishes as the water is very clear. It’s not obligatory to be a nudist to swim there. And I also like to go walking to the old coastal tower which is in Rincon de Loix. It’s a 30-minute beautiful walk along the coast, very popular among the locals.

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

I love good places. I would definitely recommend the Italian restaurant Topo Gigio that is on Avenida Mediterraneo. They have the best Italian food I have ever had. Then there’s La Falua restaurant in La Cala area. And the best one is Saltea in the Puerto Deportivo Luis Campomanes in Altea (not Benidorm, but it’s worth visiting).

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

More than one can imagine! Two biggest private clinics (Hospital Clinica Benidorm and Hospital Levante) have English-speaking receptionists and doctors. There are also a number of private clinics where at least somebody speaks English. Very convenient.

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Yes, Altea and Albir. Also Finestrat, a typical Spanish Mediterranean village. And no doubt everybody should visit Guadalest!

Benidorm Levante

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

Elian’s British School in La Nucia (5-min drive away from Benidorm, there are school buses as well), Costa Blanca International School (Benidorm), Lope de Vega International School (Benidorm), and Sierra Bernia School in Alfaz del Pi (a 10-minute drive; it’s the oldest British school in the whole Costa Blanca, founded in 1973). Basically these ones are considered the best.

Is crime an issue for expats?

There’s no crime here. Everything is very calm in Spain! Everybody just have to remember to always lock the door, turn the key and don’t fall asleep on the street after a night of clubbing.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

The prices stopped going down approximately 2 years ago. Now we see the tendency where the sellers (I’m talking about the homeowners who use the services of real estate agencies) start to elevate the prices little by little. I mean there still are people who need to sell their property urgently and they may sell it below market value although that’s not the tendency anymore.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

This might be the last years to buy cheap as the crisis in Spain has gone long ago, and we see that the market is becoming more vivid. Private sellers feel it as well and that’s why they don’t want to sell their properties cheap anymore. The economy is becoming stronger and  the banks don’t give mortgages so easily like 10 years ago. This is a good sign for the real estate sector. Very cheap properties and repossessions in Benidorm are extremely rare as it is a popular resort and the third most visited town in Spain. One cannot pretend to buy something here at the same price as in a remote village. The prices are stable but you still can find a good bargain from time to time.

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

There’s the Sierra Cortina urbanisation (close to Terra Mitica). It is gated and has a 24-hour video surveillance, proper pitch and putt, SPA, gym and a famous restaurant. Basically, it is considered as the most prestigious here.

Another urbanisation is Terra Marina. It’s behind Carrefour more or less. It’s a small, quiet and modern neighborhood where most of the houses have beautiful sea views.

There are also several urbanisations in Rincon de Loix (the so-called British area) consisting of villas and bungalows. Most of them have open-air communal pools and are within a 20-minute walk away from the beach. The buildings were constructed approximately 20 years ago. The only advantage of Rincon de Loix villas as compared to Sierra Cortina and Terra Marina ones is that all the amenities can be reached without the necessity of taking a car. However, in Sierra Cortina and in Terra Marina, the houses are new and built with modern materials.

How much are the typical property prices in Benidorm for apartments, villas etc?

The prices depend on the area. The difference is quite big for properties in new buildings and in the old ones as some developments were constructed in the 70s and the others in 2008. If we take a very general criteria of normal, economic flats not too close and not too far away from the beach, in a standard building built in the 70s-80s and with standard decoration work done, the minimum prices would be around €60,000 for a studio flat; €75,000-€80,000 for a 1-bed flat; €95,000 – €130,000 for a 2-bed flat; starting from €140,000 for a 3-bed flat. Villas in the so-called British area Rincon de Loix start from €200,000 and can go up to €600,000 and even €700,000. The prices for bungalows start from €150,000.

Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Benidorm or surrounding area?

Advice: make up your mind on what exactly you want before arranging viewings with agencies. Compare prices and try to understand what type of property is available for your budget. It requires some effort of course, but once you do that you will save a lot of time with unnecessary viewings during your holiday and the agencies will be able to offer you only suitable properties.

We have another fantastic interview and this time it is with Amanda Penalver of Inmobiliaria Nuñez.

Amanda Penalver

Benidorm is possibly Spain´s most famous holiday resort … But there is so much more to the area than initially meets the eye.

Benidorm is much larger than many people think and has something to offer everyone … and has many advantages over other areas for people looking to move to Spain:

Real diversity. There are a host of choices of properties and areas, each with their own ambience in and around Benidorm. One can go for the lively areas such as Levante and Rincon, or more tranquil areas such as Poniente and La Cala de Finestrat. There are some fabulous locations on the outskirts of Benidorm that are often chosen for permanent living.

Benidorm lives all year….. which is extremely important for those looking to live here permanently. The shops, markets, cafes and restaurants are open all year and you and your guests can bob in and out of the lively resort area and enjoy the fabulous beaches, great shops and nightly entertainment and some good golf courses.

A reliable, regular  and cheap public transport system including the bus service and tram are all available so one can move around the resort and to other areas easily. Local buses run around Benidorm and local areas very regularly and are very cheap. There is a great bus service to Alicante airport both for yourself and visitors. From the main bus station in Benidorm one can take bus services to many parts of Spain and Europe. The tram service runs down to Alicante and up towards Valencia.

Again, it is regular and great value plus in parts of the journey there are fabulous views to enjoy.

Great infrastructure and services for permanent living including excellent medical services both as part of the national service and private, often with English speaking staff, a great selection of national and International (including British curriculum) schools, good transport services. Many town halls have English speaking staff to assist with any formalities and offer good services in the community including libraries, sports centers etc.

Many parts of Benidorm are fairly flat which is perfect for those who are not so mobile.

It is only around 35 minutes to Alicante airport, with both Valencia Manses airport and San Javier within reasonable travelling distance.

English is widely spoken in many areas while one can find areas that are typically Spanish but with the comfort that there are English speaking facilities close by.

Benidorm has something for everyone, but it is important to have good unbiased local knowledge when deciding where to settle. Your decision will be based on whether you want to be in the hustle and bustle of the main resort area, in the typically Spanish Old Town, or maybe the more sedate Poniente and La Cala de Finestrat and Villajoyosa areas. As Benidorm has a regular and very reasonable bus service, it is possible to live in these areas without needing your own vehicle – perfect for those who prefer not to drive or have a young family where public transport is important.

The population is very transient so hard to say.

Benidorm is known for its great beaches and wide choice of first class nightly entertainment. In addition to the sunbathing and partying, there are wealth of things to do in and close to Benidorm. Of course there are the famous theme and water parks to enjoy: Aqualandia, Mundomar, Terramitica and Terra/Aqua Natura…. and a good choice of golf courses.

A wander around Benidorm´s Old Town is a must …. with its quaint narrow streets and famous Mirador view point a must for a photo.

Enjoy the fabulous selection of shops and boutiques with a huge selection on offer.

Benidorm enjoys markets galore … there is the huge famous tourist market on Sundays and Wednesdays, plus a local market close to the Bull Ring on Wednesday where you will shop with the locals. There is the popular Indoor market in Rincon de Loix Monday to Saturday. Or jump on the bus and head to La Cala de Villajoyosa where there is a market on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

If you enjoy walking, there are local clubs that organise various levels of walks or you can take a fabulous scenic walk through the national park up to the cross at Rincon de Loix, or along the coast from la Cala to the town of Villajoyosa . Close by are the walks to the Albir Light house, along the Albir and Altea promenade to Altea old Town, of the Finistrat´s Fonts de Moli to name but a few.

Benidorm is home to a host of fiestas so check local publications to see what’s on.

Close by, there is the fabulous medieval town of Guadalest on Spain´s top tourist spots and one can swim in the water falls at Algar .

Don´t forget the great tram service to go a bit further a field, maybe Valencia city, Alicante or Jativa.

Benidorm

Benidorm itself boasts over 300 bars and restaurants offering a host of culinary delights to suit all pockets:

If you want some entertainment one must visit the amazing Benidorm Palace or Levi’s Show boat where you can dine and take in the show.

Benidorm has nightly entertainment and one can look at the website Benidorm Seriously to see what acts are on and where the venues are. There are so many to choose from.

Old town is a must to visit … have a wander and try some local specialities in Tapas Alley … or for the more traditional enjoy Paneils or the ever popular Four Seasons … For those looking for the Gay scene check out Kaffee Klee, Sensations and the Ritch Bitch.

Benidorm has good National health facilities plus some fabulous private hospitals offering first class facilities with many English speaking staff:

There are various small towns and villages close to Benidorm, each with its own ambience:

Finestrat – Finestrat covers a large area from the lovely old village with lots of facilities in the quaint narrow streets nestled in the hills down to the bay of the Cala de Finestrat a resort known to locals as the 3rd Beach of Benidorm.

Albir – A lovely beach resort very popular with Scandinavians that lives all year but is much more tranquil than Benidorm. One can walk along the promenade to Altea.

Altea – Chic Altea has so much to offer. The marina and front line is buzzing. There is a stunning typically Spanish Old town with some amazing eateries nestled in the quaint streets leading to the balcony with cafes and fabulous views up and down the coast. Also on offer is the more sedate but very select area known as Altea hills, where one can find some jaw dropping properties that enjoy spectacular views. There is a regular bus service via Altea and Alfaz del Pi to Benidorm.

La Nucia – La Nucia covers a large area and is a real mix of the modern and traditional. One can find every type of property there alongside many commercial areas, a magnificent sports and leisure centre and the lovely quaint old town with it´s lovely church and little plazas. There is a bus service to Benidorm.

Polop – Nestled below the Sleeping Lion mountain is the small town of Polop de La Marina. Polop is famous for it´s water fountains and is a lovely village with plenty of facilities and lovely Old area with some amazing views from the café and tourist sights at the top. There is some great value modern housing close to town.

Relleu – A typically Spanish village offering exceptional value and a bit of real Spain just a short distance from Benidorm. Relleu is a great place to live with a real community feel and lots of facilities including a school and medical center, just a short drive from the coast and Benidorm.

In Benidorm there are a host of state schools for those that wish their children to be educated in the Spanish system.

Within travelling distance there are the following International schools which all have excellent reputations:

ELIANS BRITISH SCHOOL – LA NUCIA https://iale-elians.com/2016/elians-lanucia/ [2] TEL : 0034 96 687 7055

COSTA BLANCA INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE – BENIDORM https://costablancacollege.com/eng.php [3] 0034 96 680 3411

ESCUELA NORUEGA – ALFAZ DEL PI (NORWEGIAN) 0034 96 588 7767

Benidorm on the whole is very safe and most visitors feel secure both day and night when out and about in the resort. As in all areas one must be prudent and take the normal precautions – e.g stick to the main routes and lit areas when walking home at night.

The main crime is pickpocketing which can be a problem in the market – so take sensible precautions – not having your wallet on show in your back pocket walking around with handbag open…. only take with you what you need.

There have been some cases of theft around the disco area … again be sensible if a young lady starts hugging you in the street. It may not be your physical magnetism that she is after but your money!!

benidorm-3

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same? Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

There has never been a better time to buy properties in Benidorm. There are some great properties at very competitive prices on the market and we are definitely seeing signs of the market recovering which is great for all those who have made a good buy.

As the rental market is very strong in Benidorm this can be a good option while waiting for the market to improve to make your investment work for you.

There are still some interesting opportunities to buy bank properties in an around the resort with some real gems to be had!

The center and resort areas of Benidorm consists mostly of apartments, although from time to time resort based houses and villas do become available.

On the outskirts of the town, there are various urbanisations offering villas and town houses both with modern and more traditional styles. Many of these urbanisations are gated and have communal pools.

Very close to Benidorm is the fabulous urbanisation of Sierra Cortina with 24 hour security, luxury villas plus gated communities, bar and restaurant, golf and so much more just minutes from the beaches of Benidorm.

In Benidorm one can find 1-bedroom apartments from 75,000 euros upwards and 2-bedroom properties from 100,000 euros.

Houses close to the resort can start from 120,000 euros as a guide with detached villas from around 180,000 euros.

Benidorm and the surrounding areas are fabulous for permanent living plus for investment. The most valuable tip is to get the right location that suits your lifestyle or your aims with regards to investment.

Always use the services of an established agent, preferably with an API license to ensure you buy your property correctly and with total peace of mind.

Just returned from 2 weeks in Benidorm ,and was approached by 2 girls doing a survey about our holiday, and how we booked the holiday, ect also are we happy with our hotel (Riudor hotel) and would we like a free holiday? I then i asked was it timeshare and was told timeshare was not allowed in Benidorm? We were contacted the next day informing us that we had won a free holiday, next morning a representative came at 10-30am and took us to The Gift Company (in the Old Town) and on numerous times asked was it Timeshare and was told again NO, After 3 1/2 hours we walked away with a very angry lady who had tried and sell my wife and i reduced 3/5 years holiday memberships,we are both 74years old,and i think many uk holiday makers are being drawn into this scam, which is putting people of coming to your resorts? on the terms & conditions it states (timeshare/ownership system) Please could you approach these people and explain the European law and protect your holiday makers.

Regards ,D Andrews.

Where is Benidorm, and how do you get there?

Benidorm is situated on the eastern coast of Spain, within the province of Alicante in the Valencian Community. Nestled about 45 km (28 miles) northeast of Alicante , the province’s capital, and approximately 140 km (87 miles) south of Valencia, the regional capital, Benidorm is a popular tourist destination on the Costa Blanca .

So, how do you make your way to this charming destination? The most convenient method is flying into Alicante Airport, Spain’s sixth-busiest airport with connections to numerous European and international locations. Once you’ve landed, you can choose between a bus, taxi, or private transfer to Benidorm. The journey typically takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and your preferred mode of transport.

History – Old Town and New Development

Did you know that  Benidorm  has a rich history dating back to ancient times? The Romans and the Moors once inhabited it. The city as we know it today was officially founded in 1325 by Admiral Bernat de Sarrià, who granted it a town charter to encourage Christian settlement in the area. Benidorm remained a small fishing village for centuries, charming visitors with its natural beauty and strategic location along the coast.

Benidorm Old Town

In the 1950s, Benidorm transformed into the tourist resort it is today, becoming one of the pioneers of mass tourism in Spain and Europe. The city became synonymous with modernity and progress as high-rise buildings and wide avenues shaped its now-famous skyline. Yet, at its core, Benidorm has also lovingly preserved its  old town .

The  Benidorm Old Town  is a captivating area filled with history and charm. As you stroll through its narrow streets, you’ll be delighted by its quaint buildings and vibrant atmosphere. Be sure to visit these historical landmarks during your visit:

15 Best Things to Do in Benidorm (Spain)

If your idea of the perfect holiday is lots of beach-time, great weather, first-rate family attractions and wild nightlife then Benidorm needs to be high up your list. The resort on the Costa Blanca has an almost-iconic skyline of apartment towers in two shallow crescents next to huge sandy beaches.

The amount of activities on offer will make your head spin, whether it’s golf, go-karting, paintballing, water sports or mountain hikes. You have an action-packed week or two in the sun or a lazy break doing next to nothing. Little ones are also going to love the heavyweight theme parks and water attractions right next to the resort.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Benidorm :

1. Levante Beach

Levante Beach, Benidorm

This is the image most associated with Benidorm: An arc of pale golden sand, bounded by a long line of skyscrapers and dappled with a forest of blue parasols.

Granted, the beach can fill up in the summer, but even on the busiest days you can find a quiet place to nest away from the crowds that tend to swarm the waterline.

If all this sea air gives you can appetite then at the foot of the tall apartment blocks are restaurants and North European-style pubs.

You’re sure to find something to your taste.

2. Poniente Beach

Poniente Beach

The beach next door to Levante has a very different atmosphere; although there’s the same strip of towers, the bulk of the resort is way off to the east.

Poniente is generally quieter and more family-oriented.

This beach has  received a lot of investment in the last few years, with a network of boardwalks making it accessible to wheelchair users.

They’ll branch off the road every 30 metres or so and save a hot, tiring walk down to the water.

As with Levante the surf at Poniente is moderate, but less assured swimmers should avoid wading out too far as the undercurrents can be quite strong.

3. Mundomar

Mundomar

Wildlife parks with shows and demonstrations may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Mundomar is pretty modern and provides large enclosures for its wealth of sea animals and birds.

The trainers and keepers also appear to have a rapport with these dolphins and sea lions, as you’ll see during the regular shows that children are sure to love.

You can also get close to otters, penguins and a variety of primates and birds at the park’s zoo.

Book ahead for special experiences like meeting with dolphins face-to-face or swimming with sea lions.

  • 4.Terra Mítica

Terra Mítica

Among the largest theme parks in Spain, this attraction is inspired by ancient civilisations.

The three areas here are Rome, Egypt and Greece and they’re all crammed with roller coasters, shows and other amusements.

One of the premier rides is the Magnus Colossus, a massive wooden roller coaster on a track more than a kilometre long.

It’s suitable for all except the littlest members of the family.

Choreographed street shows, like Spartacus’ rebellion, are all part of the fun.

A different attraction available on the same ticket is Iberia Park, next door, with water rides and amusements based on Spain’s ancient history.

Best value for money : Terra Natura and Aqua Natura Combo Day Ticket

5. Aqualandia

Aqualandia

Next door to Mundomar is one of Spain’s oldest and best water parks, opening for business back in 1985. It continues to grow and new rides and amusements are added almost every season.

Some of these can break records, like Big Bang, the tallest water slide in Europe, while the brand new Vertigo sends riders hurtling to the splash pool at 100kph.

The water for all these slides, pools and jacuzzis is piped right from the Mediterranean, following a bit of desalination of course.

The wave pool at Aqualandia is gigantic, with enough room for thousands of swimmers at one time.

It’s one of the best days out in Benidorm for little guys who want a bit more excitement.

6. Balcón del Mediterráneo

Balcón del Mediterráneo

Plaça del Castell is a kind of stone garden with chessboard tiles and white balustrades on the headland between Poniente and Levant.

This was the site of Benidorm’s castle, which stood for hundreds of years until it was destroyed during the Napoleonic wars.

The views on either side of the square are sublime, but nothing beats the Balcón del Mediterráneo on the southern edge of the promontory.

Take a seat beneath the lamppost here to contemplate the Mediterranean and Benidorm’s modern skyline.

7. La Cruz de Benidorm

La Cruz de Benidorm

Maybe the resort’s reputation hasn’t always been the purest, so in 1961 there was a religious mission to carry a wooden cross from the town to this rugged spur to redeem the city for its sins.

The cross to the west of Benidorm became a tourist attraction and was replaced with a permanent monument in 1975 when the old one was blown away in a storm.

The 45-minute hike to the cross is probably best attempted in the fringe seasons, as the landscape is pretty exposed.

But even if you do go at the height of summer the panoramas of Benidorm make all the toil worthwhile.

8. A round of golf

Sierra Cortina

If your Mediterranean holiday feels incomplete without a round of golf you’re in luck as the Costa Blanca has 15 courses.

You don’t have to venture far for a family course, the Sierra Cortina pitch & putt.

There are 18 holes for serious players to test their short games, and for newcomers to learn the basics.

If this only whets your appetite there’s a scenic nine-hole course tucked between the mountains and the sea 15 minutes away.

Altea Golf also has a driving range, and has a pilates studio for non-golfers left behind!

9. Sierra Helada

Sierra Helada

For all Benidorm’s urban character there’s a large natural park covering a large swathe of the coastline just next door.

Within minutes you can leave sky-scraping towers behind for sky-scraping cliffs.

All you need is a decent pair of shoes, a hat and some water and you’re set for a hike through a rugged landscape of limestone rocks and Aleppo pines.

At the northern end there’s a paved road that twists up to Albir Lighthouse.

More challenging is the walk to the radio masts at the highest point of the park, 300 metres above the sea.

10. Dining and nightlife

Nightlife

As a true tourist enclave Benidorm isn’t exactly the last word in Spanish cuisine; the large population of expats and visitors from Northern Europe makes dining in the resort an international experience.

There are Chinese, Thai, Indian and Italian eateries, and even a Japanese sushi bar.

Still, there are a handful of good tapas bars and restaurants that serve authentic Valencian rice dishes like seafood paella.

Summer nights in Benidorm are full of life, with a huge array of bars, pubs and nightclubs where people make merry till dawn.

The biggest clubs are all in next to each other Avenida Communitat Valencia, and include KM Discoteca and Discoteca Privilege.

11. Puig Campana

Puig Campana

The village of Finestrat is 15 minutes by car, and here you can get detailed information on how best to ascend one of the region’s highest and most emblematic peaks.

Visit the tourist office for trail maps, make sure people know that you’re going to attempt the climb, and then you can be on your way.

You won’t need anything more than sensible clothing, food, water and a phone to climb the 1,406 metres to the top.

As you go you’ll encounter a sparse, almost lunar landscape of scree and the odd tufts of pine and juniper scrub.

You’ll know why you did it when you reach one of the two peaks, as the view down to Benidorm makes the resort’s skyscrapers look like a row of dominos.

Altea

The next resort along the coast is Altea, which sits in the bay beyond the ridge of the Sierra Helada.

Altea has a quieter atmosphere to Benidorm, and has one of those typically Mediterranean old-towns to wander through.

It’s on a hillside with a steep gradient, etched with alleys and stairways.

The houses here are all painted white and wrought iron balconies, window grates and gas lights.

The unmissable monument in Altea is the parish church, loved for its two bright blue cupolas patterned with white tiles.

13. Guadalest

Guadalest

If you only have time for one day-trip this extraordinary place should be top of the list.

Guadalest is a small town established by the Moors in the early-middle ages.

It sits on the rim of limestone cliffs 500 metres above sea level, and interacts with the rocky landscape in all sort of surprising ways.

For instance, to get to the Moorish Castle of San José you have to pass through a tunnel carved from the rock.

From the castle walls the views out over the Aitana and Xortá will almost make you gasp.

Available tour : Guadalest 2 Hour Walking Tour

14. Alicante

Alicante

The capital of the province is close enough for a morning or afternoon excursion, and you can even get there on L1 of the Alicante tram.

There’s a bit more history in this city, and none of it is more striking than the medieval castle of Santa Bárbara.

The outer walls of this fortress dominate Alicante from the steep slopes of Mount Benacantil, and as you descend you’ll enter Santa Cruz, the old-town, where there are winding cobblestone streets and traditional, whitewashed houses.

15. Low Festival

Low Festival

Spain has a big indie music scene, and in the summer there are festivals in pretty much every city and large resort.

Benidorm has the Low Festival, shortened from “Low Cost”. It hits town at the end of July and if you’re into alternative guitar pop and dance music it will be a treasure trove.

Past editions have welcomed Suede, Belle and Sebastian, The Libertines, Portishead and Massive Attack, as well as a legion of Spanish like Lori Meyers, Love of Lesbian, La Casa Azul and Los Planetas.

Like other Spanish festivals the first bands take the stage at sunset, and the bill continues late into the night when it’s cooler.

tourist facilities and amenities in benidorm

Located in the heart of Marina Baixa,   Benidorm is a mix-match of contrasts. From the giddy heights of the high-rises to the wildest of pristine coves, this is a seaside destination like no other. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, there is plenty of time for pure enjoyment.

What to see in Benidorm in 3 days

Day 1: the historic centre and beaches.

We recommend you start your exploration of Benidorm by delving into its past . Not so long ago, this popular tourist destination was a small fishing village whose air you can breathe in the historic centre. As you wander down narrow cobbled streets you will come across beautiful scenery such as Calle Mayor, Plaza de Canalejas and Plaza del Castillo. A journey back in time to Benidorm’s great historic and cultural legacy.

When you reach Plaza de San Jaime, make sure you take the time to gaze at San Jaime Apóstol y Santa Ana church . Dating back to the 18th century, this beautiful place of worship is defined by its blue cupulas that shimmer in the sunlight.

Also worth stopping off at are some modern buildings, such as the council, which is said to be a horizontal - yes, horizontal - high-rise . Keep strolling until you reach Balcón del Mediterráneo , also known as Mirador del Castillo. This viewing point affords spectacular vistas over the town and its vast bay . The best time of day to enjoy the views is at sunset when the sky transforms into a blaze of technicolour.

And now, as you are in the Mediterranean after all, it is time to enjoy the beach. Benidorm has a number of beaches and coves that all offer something different. Try to experience as many as you can.

In the far north of the municipality there are two small sandy and pebbly coves sitting at the foot of Serra Gelada natural park . Tío Ximo cove and La Almadrava cove are the perfect places to unwind in a natural idyll and do some snorkelling. Another dreamy cove is Mal Pas , which is a diver’s paradise.

If, instead, you are looking for a stretch of the coastline where you can do all sorts of activities, including water sports, Levante and Poniente beaches are for you. Connected by a seafront promenade, these popular spots have got everything you’ll want and more. No matter what time of year you visit, you can enjoy these beaches until the sunsets, which is after 8pm in the summer months.

Day 2: Benidorm Island

On the second day of this itinerary you will discover a beautiful landscape floating in the sea. Benidorm Island lies just off the coast and offers plenty of wonders to see and explore.

Also known as “Journalist Island”, this islet is just two miles from the beach. Though tiny, it offers no lack of stunning landscapes and fascinating wildlife. The world living under the sea is an absolute joy to explore. Moray eels and octopuses hide beneath the rocks as well as all sorts of other creatures. The island is one of the best diving spots in the world, so make sure you don’t miss out on getting yourself into the water.

To get to Benidorm Island, you can hop onto one of the various boats that ferry visitors back and forth. The journey takes about 15 minutes . Once you step foot on the dry land of the island, you can start exploring, walking the different hiking routes, going for a swim or doing some snorkelling.

Though the island is uninhabited, there is one restaurant that serves up a Mediterranean menu. Make sure you come prepared for your trip: pack a hat, sun cream, swimming costume and sunglasses in your bag and get ready for an amazing day out.

Day 3: Amusement parks

Your third and final day is dedicated to fun and adventure. One of Benidorm’s defining characteristics is that it has a large number of theme and amusement parks on its doorstep where you can enjoy an amazing day out with your friends and family.

There is no shortage of parks for you to choose from . Terra Mítica is a theme park that will immerse you in the ancient worlds of Egypt, Greece, Rome, Iberia and The Islands . There are attractions for all ages here. Whether you want to strap yourself into the most daredevil rides or enjoy incredible water attractions, your day out will be filled with excitement, laughter and a whole lot of fun.

Mundomar , on the other hand, will take you on an unforgettable journey into the animal world. You will see over 80 different creatures here, including the most fascinating mammals, birds and reptiles. The park also puts on a number of different shows, including dancing dolphins.

Terra Natura is another animal park that is home to over 1,500 different animals from all around the world. Based on the philosophy of zoo immersion, the park has no barriers so you can get up close to the animals. If you’ve always wanted to see the animal kingdom in its natural habitat, this is the park for you.

And then there are the water parks . There are two to choose from in Benidorm. Aqua Natura has hair-raising attractions such as Tornado, Cresta and many more. Over 40,000m 2  of fun awaits here in the rides, activities and pools.

The second is the biggest water park in Europe . Aqualandia promises a day of pure thrills. With 17 slides, 10 kids’ games, 12 pools and sky-high rides such as Big Bang, there is plenty to do from morning to night. An incredible day out in the Costa Blanca awaits.

What to see in Benidorm in 1 day

A three-day getaway offers you plenty of time to get to know what Benidorm is all about. However, if you’ve only got a day to explore this flagship destination in the Costa Blanca , here’s what we recommend for your whistle stop tour.

Benidorm is all about the beach so make sure you spend some time on the shimmering coast. Choose the beach or cove that appeals to you the most and get up early to enjoy the serenity of the sea. Don’t forget your snorkel to explore the beautiful waters and the seabed.

After a morning of sun, sea and sand, wander along the seafront promenade in search of a restaurant where you can have a bite to eat. In the afternoon, take the time to stroll through the historic centre . As you wander the pretty streets, stop to marvel at beautiful buildings. To bring this memorable day to a fitting close, watch the sunset over the sea and town from the viewing point, Balcón del Mediterráneo .

Benidorm is a fabulous destination all year round. No matter how many days you are spending on this slice of the Costa Blanca, you’ll be sure to have an incredible time.

Services in Benidorm

Benidorm boasts all the services one would expect from a city with a modern infrastructure, making it a pleasure to visit for both holidaymakers and those thinking of relocating here. It offers excellent transport links via air, with three airports that service the area including Alicante International Airport, one of the busiest in Spain and about a 40 minute drive from the city. Road links are via the AP-7 and A-7 motorways which are maintained to a high standard and the picturesque national N-332 coastal road that stretches the length of the Costa Blanca. The city also benefits from an efficient and regular local bus service.

Tourist Services

Benidorm's main Tourist Information Bureau is located at the Old Town end of Levante Beach and is large, modern and run by a helpful and friendly team of staff who are knowledgeable about the local area and always pleased to assist visitors with any questions. There is a smaller Tourist Information Bureau on the corner of Av. de Europa and Calle Ibiza as well as a tourist office at the city's main bus terminus. Most of Benidorm's hotel reception and concierge staff have a wealth of local knowledge and the city police are by and large friendly and helpful.

Throughout the city visitors will find embassies, consulates and diplomatic missions representing the vast majority of the world's countries, which is nice to know and always makes visiting any country fell that little bit safer. Benidorm's attractions and activities both day and night are second to none, and with so much going on visitors will be pleased to know they can call on the services of a number of ticket agents and tour operators who offer a fantastic choice of attractions, water sports, adventure tours and nighttime activities.

Benidorm's beaches are one of the biggest draws for tourists and, understanding the revenue they generate, the city council put a lot of time and effort into keeping them spotlessly clean with excellent services and facilities. To give you an idea how huge this task is, Levante Beach alone boasts around 5,000 sun loungers during the peak summer months! Other services include lifeguards, first aid stations, disability access, beach sports facilities and even a library.

City Services

Throughout Benidorm visitors will find a good selection of high street brand shops and boutiques, speciality shops including the popular British favourite Iceland , modern well stocked supermarkets offering a range of imported products, indoor and outdoor markets and the impressive La Marina Commercial Centre .

Postal services include six main post offices called Oficina de Correos and a selection of post rooms/shops, usually British run and offering a complete range of postal services, passport renewal, fax & photocopying, phone top up and internet services. These are very handy for English speakers as the majority of postal staff in the main post offices only speak Spanish.

On that note, visitors needing to sort out any government or official paperwork may wish to use the services of a translator to avoid spending hours in queues only to find the official you finally get to deal with only speaks Spanish. Waiting time for a number of government documentation services can take weeks, but there are ‘ways' to avoid this and get certain paperwork sorted out the same or next day by using the services of a ‘fixer' who, for a fee can usually get things streamlined. It is best to enquire in local Facebook social groups if needing these services.

When it comes to currency exchange, Eurochange have the most branches in the city including a handy one in the Old Town, just opposite L'Elx Park fountain. Others include Europound, Gold Rush Benidorm, MoneyGram and Shiela's Money Exchange. Banks can be found throughout the city, although opening times are not as efficient as many visitors would expect so it's always best to check before wasting a journey. Banks, along with practically everything else close on ‘Red Days' (Spanish holidays) including shops, supermarkets and pharmacies.

Health Services

Doctor and dentist surgeries are well represented in Benidorm and offer all the treatments and services one would expect from those in their home countries. Surprisingly for a city the size of Benidorm there are only two government run clinics, one in the centre of the Old Town and the other behind the Indoor Market on Av. Dr. Severo Ochoa. The actual government hospital that services Benidorm is in neighbouring Villajoyosa .

The city boasts two superb private hospitals, Hospital Clinica Benidorm located on Av. Alfonso Puchades next to L'Aiguera Park, with an impressive 400 employees and 40 medical departments, and Hospital IMED Levante Located on Calle Dr. Ramón y Cajal 7, also offering excellent, modern facilities.

There are a selection of care homes in Benidorm including the fantastic Residencia Patricia which is more like a holiday resort offering comfortable shared and private accommodation,   indoor and outdoor swimming pools, Jacuzzi, hot tubs, gymnasium, solarium, hair & beauty salon, lounge, bar and restaurant. Their range of medical and after care services are second to none, with a fully qualified 24 hour medical team and a number of medical departments.

Tourism in Benidorm, over a hundred years of history

7 May, 2015 por Camping Villasol 1 Comment

Since tourism leisure spread, the coast has always been a powerful attraction for tourists. The east coast and, by extension, Benidorm has a long history of over one hundred years of relationship with tourism, which is why today has a large infrastructure ready for the many visitors who continually receives. Campings in Benidorm, apartment complexes, hotel, the wide range of daytime and evening entertainment … an entire infrastructure to serve the tourist.

The custom of “taking baths” perhaps copied from the wealthy and renowned families of Europe that used to travel to Baden Baden or Biarritz, is one of the first manifestations of tourism of which there is evidence in Benidorm.

The first known tourist brochure dating from 1893 in Benidorm is about the Baths of Virgin of Suffrage. At this time visitors came to the coast to take advantage of the medicinal and healing properties of sea water baths, which were so popular in Europe.

And that is how the tourist history of Benidorm begins…

Infrastructures, key in the history of tourism in Benidorm

As in many other attractive areas for visitors, tourism development in Benidorm is accompanied by the construction of infrastructure, especially roads. During the early years of the twentieth century the Silla-Alicante road opens, which improves communication with Benidorm, and, above all, the arrival of the railroad to Alicante occurs.

In 1914 the narrow gauge railroad, the Trenet of the Marina, links Alicante with Altea, Benidorm, and Villajoyosa and, shortly after, Denia. The arrival of the train makes the first collective movements of tourists appear; the so-called “train jug”, which transports tourists from Alcoy, Alicante or even from Madrid. The curious name “train of the botijo” starts by the custom of these first tourists of carrying earthenware pitchers with fresh water to bear better the long journey in those slow and uncomfortable trains.

Another infrastructure that contributes to the arrival of mass tourism to Benidorm is the city itself. In 1956 the City Council approved urban planning that directed the city in a definitive way towards tourism. Wide avenues, respect the natural orientation of the beaches, accessibility and vertical growth of the city (hotels, apartments) foster tourism growth that occurs in Benidorm from this decade.

Today Benidorm is “the Manhattan of the Mediterranean”, the town with more skyscrapers per capita in the world, behind only the US city in number of skyscrapers per square meter.

Foreign tourism, the key to growth in Benidorm

With the arrival of foreign tourists…bikinis came too. But, for Franco’s Spain this bath wear was far too provocative. A fine of 40,000 pesetas made the visionary mayor, Pedro Zaragoza, who saw the future of tourism in Benidorm, climb on his Vespa and drive the 400 kilometres to Franco’s residence to ask him to legalize bikinis. The “mayor of the Vespa” got his prize and Benidorm was the first city in Spain in which people could wear bikinis while in the rest of Spain was banned.

The 60’s were the years of the boom of tourism, especially foreign tourism, in Benidorm.

A fully vertical city, specially prepared to welcome visitors, sun, beach and great weather make Benidorm an international tourist centre. During that time the population living in Benidorm multiplied itself, from around 3.000 at the late 50s to over 12.000 in 1970. This increase in the population consists mainly of the large number of tourists coming to the city not only in summer; Benidorm has become a resort town throughout the year.

The Festival of Benidorm, a tourist attraction in itself

Perhaps the most widespread song from the Benidorm Festival is the one of Julio Iglesias in 1968 when he won the competition with the song “La vida sigue igual”, since Iglesias becomes the image of the Festival for the following years. The Spanish Song Festival started in 1959 based on the Festival of San Remo in Italy, its main target was to present Spanish artists. Its stage has hosted stars like Julio Iglesias, the Duo Dinámico or Raphael in those 60s when the Festival had a deserved international reputation.

Nowadays Benidorm is the tourist town par excellence of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Its mild climate throughout the year, its infrastructure and good communication both by air and land makes it a desired destination by both domestic and foreign tourists looking to enjoy their holidays in Benidorm.

But surely there are some moments in the history of Benidorm that are not popularly known, which one would you highlight in the history of Benidorm?
