Our Old Dubai and Souk Tour begins on the Bur Dubai side of the Dubai Creek outside the Al Fahidi District. Guests can easily get here by Metro or by taxi.

After walking through Al Fahidi Courtyard Houses, we walk by to the Dubai Museum (currently closed for renovation), pass by the Ruler's Court and then experience the famous Hindi Lane. After learning about the Old Textile Souk, Meena Bazaar and the Indian community's influence on Dubai, we get to the Creek Waterfront Abra Taxi Stand.

We look out onto Sheikh Saeed's House and Heritage Village as we enjoy a traditional boat ride to get to Deira. Here we learn about the historic trading activities that go on even till today in the Spice Souk and the Gold Souk. The tour ends at the Gold Souk. From here guests can enjoy a traditional Emirati meal if they choose.

The Al Ras Metro is close by and provides connectivity to the rest of the city.

Built in mid-1800s, the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood was once a bustling trading hub for merchants. It was conveniently situated near the banks of the Dubai Creek and furthermore is protected from attack by ancient forts and watchtowers. Traditional Emirati architecture is characteristic in these restored and preserved houses.

These have now been restored to serve as boutique hotels, art studios and cafes. We will walk through these houses, and understand their simplicity in design, functionality and relevance to the seasons.

Trip Highlights & Destinations

  • Al Seef Street - Al Seef or Al Seef Khor is a 1.8 km waterfront promenade along the bank of Dubai Creek in the Al Fahidi neighborhood of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Al Seef boasts two distinct zones, offering a captivating contrast: Heritage Village: Journey back in time with wind towers and sandstone buildings lining narrow alleyways (called sikkas). Explore the open-air floating market, reminiscent of Dubai's pearl diving past, and browse the 1950s-style souk brimming with handicrafts and treasures. Modern Waterfront: Step into the present with sleek malls, chic hotels, and a vibrant array of restaurants overlooking the creek. Enjoy stunning views of traditional dhows gliding by, adding a touch of timeless authenticity to the modern backdrop.
  • Bastakiya Quarter - In Dubai's heart, tucked beside the shimmering creek, whispers Bastakiyah, a time capsule of wind-kissed walls and narrow sikkas. Once home to Iranian pearl merchants, their legacy lives on in intricately carved balconies and soaring barjeels, catching desert breezes for courtyard havens. Wander these sun-dappled lanes, haggle for treasures in aromatic spice souks, and lose yourself in the rhythm of a timeless tapestry woven from tradition and modern whispers. Here, beneath Al Fahidi Fort's watchful gaze, Dubai's soul unfolds, inviting you to step back and breathe in its ancient rhythm.
  • Dubai Museum & Al Fahidi Fort - Step back in time at the Dubai Museum, housed within the majestic Al Fahidi Fort. Built in 1787 as the city's first line of defense, this coral-stone sentinel haas witnessed Dubai's transformation from a humble fishing village to a glittering metropolis. Explore the fort's ramparts and courtyards, imagining its role in protecting ancient treasures and watching over bustling trade routes. So, whether you're a history buff or simply curious about Dubai's roots, the Dubai Museum and Al Fahidi Fort offer a fascinating glimpse into the soul of this vibrant city.
  • Bur Dubai Abra Station - The Bur Dubai Abra Station is more than just a transportation hub; it's a symbol of Dubai's vibrant spirit, where tradition and modernity coexist in perfect harmony. It's an invitation to slow down, to disconnect from the frenetic pace of the city, and to immerse yourself in the timeless charm of Dubai's historic heart
  • Deira Old Souk Abra Station - The Deira Old Souk Abra Station is a charming gateway to Dubai's rich history and culture. Located in the heart of the bustling Deira Old Souk, the station offers visitors a chance to experience the traditional mode of transportation in Dubai - the Abra
  • Old Souk - The Old Souk, also known as the Deira Souk, is a labyrinthine marketplace in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It's a vibrant and sensory overload, where narrow alleys wind between stalls overflowing with spices, textiles, jewelry, and household goods. It is a place to get lost in time, to wander aimlessly and soak up the atmosphere of a traditional Arab marketplace.
  • Dubai Spice Souk - Step into a kaleidoscope of color and aroma at the Dubai Spice Souk, a vibrant tapestry woven from ancient tradition and modern vibrancy. Narrow alleys twist and turn, their sun-dappled walls adorned with burlap sacks overflowing with exotic treasures. Beyond the sensory feast, the Spice Souk pulsates with cultural significance. In every scoop of spice lies a heritage, a whispered recipe passed down through generations. Each pungent whiff transports you to bustling bazaars and sun-drenched spice routes, a testament to Dubai's rich tapestry of trade and tradition.
  • Dubai Gold Souk - Crafted with exquisite skill, the jewelry whispers tales of distant lands, some adorned with intricate Arabic knots, others sparkling with gemstones in the vibrant hues of Indian spices. The air hangs heavy with the musky scent of oud and the enticing aroma of freshly brewed Arabic coffee, adding to the souk's intoxicating charm.

  • Experience Old Dubai like our friends would, only the stuff you have to see and eat rather than a standard touristy checklist.
  • Stand apart from the mammoth groups herded with a flag; our group is small and intimate, with only 10 to 14 fellow explorers.
  • Savour popular local snacks, tangy Indian treats and indigenous Emirati dishes.
  • Meet a local resident guide who thrives on stories and passion, not commissions from the souk; never feel pressured to spend!
  • Ride the abra, Dubai’s oldest form of water transportation across the historic Creek.
  • Play SPINGO, our proprietary spice game that transforms the touristy souk into a fun, easy-to-play and immersive experience.

We did the Iftar tour and it was a wonderful! We cant wait to do a different theme with her. The amount of food was perfect. As someone whose lived in Dubai for a bit, I will say that only 25% of the foods on this particular tour were new to me, but the overall experience more than made up for that (AND the food was delicious!) We broke the Ramadan fast with a huge group of people, sharing in the magical atmosphere of the community at sunset. We wandered around the old Dubai streets/souks and all the food tasted had a special meaning to better understand authentic Dubai. The children (8 and 10 yrs) were kept interested and loved all the food. There was even a little game! Perfect organization and accommodations when needed. • C9555HAemmad 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Delicious History Nada was our food tour guide through what I would call “delicious history.” She was there ahead of time to greet us. We purchased our tour through a third party and, upon arriving, discovered some of the coverage offered through our package was, in fact, not offered. This was important because the language indicated we would be given headphones and communication devices needed to listen to Nada as she shared information throughout the tour. Without hesitation, she said she would sort it out, and at no additional cost, she could provide us with the equipment needed to participate in the tour. From the start, she was very personable and had a welcoming demeanor. She had great knowledge and history of the food she was sharing with us, combined with a light-hearted sense of humor that kept us all entertained throughout the tour. In addition to the food knowledge she shared, she also shared historical information about the areas we were walking through, so as we went from stop to stop, she was always engaging us and keeping us entertained. Excellent staff welcomed us at each stop and took the time to show us how they made the food we were sampling. We were also allowed to make our first meal. All the food was brought out to us and spread across a table, and they let us build our first course. For the second course, we were taken into the kitchen restaurant for a close-up look at how the dessert we were served was made. We had four stops in total and all of them included their own fun, history and delicious food. If you are in the area and choose Frying Pan, ask for Nada’s tour! She made this one of those unforgettable experiences where “time flies when you’re having fun!” Read more Written March 7, 2024
