Best Time to Visit Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal is a year-round delight, each season adding its unique charm to this South Indian hill station. With a subtropical climate that keeps the weather pleasantly moderate (hovering between 8 to 33 degrees Celsius throughout the year), any time is a good time to experience the beauty that Kodaikanal has to offer.

However, if you’re looking to catch the hill station at its absolute best, plan your visit between September and June. During this period, Kodaikanal enjoys both the winter and summer seasons, offering a perfect blend of cool and warm weather.

Unlike the bone-chilling cold of North Indian hill stations, Kodaikanal’s winter is mild and gentle. Similarly, the summer here is not as scorching as the plains. The result is a consistently pleasant climate that, coupled with the breathtaking natural beauty, attracts tourists from far and wide.

Now, let’s dive into each season to uncover the unique experiences they bring.

Ready for a closer look? Let’s explore what Kodaikanal has in store for you!

Kodaikanal In Winter (November to March)

kodaikanal in winter

Kodaikanal’s winter is like a tale of two halves. First off, from November to January, it’s chilly and buzzing with folks. Why? ‘Cause everyone’s flocking to celebrate Christmas and New Year. So, the prices for hotels and flights might do a little dance – they go up. The temps hover between 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. Now, roll into February and March, and things mellow out. The hotels aren’t as crowded, and prices take a breather. It’s the perfect time to plan a budget-friendly trip to Kodaikanal. Temperatures play between 12 to 26 degrees Celsius.

Since it’s the slow season, it’s prime time to spot some gaur in the forests. And if you’re all about getting lost in nature or soaking up Kodaikanal’s vibe, this is your jam. Plus, it’s just right for a trek in the warm daytime and snuggling up in tents at night.

So, whether you’re up for the lively buzz or the chilled-out vibes, Kodaikanal’s winter has got your back.

Now, this is one vacation that might put you in the mood for shedding those extra kilos you gained sitting around at work-between dozens of parks, lakes and walks, all picturesque, this place is going to get you up and moving. The rains might come on unexpectedly during sightseeing though, and pulls the temperature down a few notches.

Winters in Kodai are pleasantly warm some times, but can get much colder at nights, the fluctuation range is large. You can go sightseeing easily, winter makes for lovely walks Kodai provides such opportunity for. Pongal, the festival here, is a major highlight in winter tourism.

You can take taxis from these locations and Mysore, etc and also one to your hotel from the airports. You can drive yourself by road to Kodai from places nearby like Bangalore, Chennai as well.

Picture-perfect memories are made in picture-perfect scenery and this perfection is found in  Kodaikanal . A place as diverse as the meaning of its name, this hill station is known as the Princess of Hill Stations, not for nothing!

Set in the lush hills of Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul district, the city of Kodaikanal is a popular tourist destination yet there is something mysterious and untouched about the place that keeps pulling you back to its loving embrace. The city came to existence because the Kodaikanal Weather was the best retreat from the sultry summer for the British who needed cooler weather. With the Western Ghats’ Palani Hills forming the ideal cloud-capped peaks and the rolling green valley being a salve for sore eyes, no wonder Kodaikanal is often considered a gift from the gods.

Beauty like Palani Hills and the Kodaikanal Weather is something that one must experience for the place is not just a summer retreat but offers so much more in terms of culture, natural sights, and architecture and has something for everyone to connect with and enjoy – be it boating, hiking, trekking, camping or just enjoying the fresh air that cleanses and heals your heart. No matter how you land in Tamil Nadu – if you are travelling from another state or country – the ultimate journey into the city is completed by road. So if you are coming from Madurai airport (120 km from Kodaikanal) or have hopped down the Kodai road railway station (100 km away from the city) you need to board a TNSTC bus or you can hire a car and zoom through the road enjoying the wind in your hair and the green sight to lift your blues and let the Kodaikanal weather make you forget about everything else. Find the best hotels in Kodaikanal this summer by making advance bookings.

If you want to escape not only the heat but also want to reconnect with yourself then a trip to Kodaikanal should be ideal for you. No matter what season you decide to visit, one thing is for sure that the Kodaikanal Weather will appease you no matter what. The best hotels in Kodaikanal are found near the Kodai Lake.

Each season has its own charm

Kodaikanal

A hill station in the south is bound to have pleasant weather yet the Kodaikanal Weather does have some highs and lows in terms of temperature and that does affect the activities on offer. A lot also depends upon the people who are planning the trip. For the lovers of chilly seasons, late monsoons and the winter is the best time to visit to enjoy the chill in the air and to stroll around or enjoy a hot cup of coffee at Pot Luck or Pastry Corner. Summers are perfect for the souls who prefer milder weather so they can trek without worrying about having to keep switching between feeling cold or too warm. However, each season has its charm, to say the least. Also, the best hotels in Kodaikanal can be found all year around.

Kodaikanal in Summer: (April to June)

Summer (April to June)

Summer is also the best time to visit Kodaikanal as the temperature ranges between 30ºC to 20ºC. The pleasant, refreshing breeze blowing on your face makes it perfect for sightseeing, trekking, cycling, boating, and other outdoor activities. Colourful flowers in full bloom fulfill the desires of nature buffs. It’s the perfect place for a summer sojourn which is why hotels in Kodaikanal are always brimming with tourists in summer. Also, Kodaikanal room booking is there to be done beforehand as the place gets crowded during summer time.

If colorful is what you seek then summer at Kodaikanal is perfect for you. The months of summer starts in March and lasts till June and the Kodaikanal Weather is mild at this time with the temperatures staying between 20 degrees to 30 degrees Celsius and the light breeze makes walking around a pleasant experience. The rivers and lakes are the highlights of this town then. Once you reach Kodai Lake you will recheck your GPS to make sure that you are still in India and haven’t accidentally discovered a site and landed in Scotland. This manmade lake is ideal for boating.

A hike or cycling trip at Croakers Walk must be added to your itinerary when you are visiting Kodai Lake. This beautifully made 1-kilometer walkway is perfect for strolling, cycling, and clicking some memorable shot of yourself or your loved ones. Berijam Lake is not only a famous picnic spot but also has a gothic feel to it with the pine trees looming over making this a perfect setting for horror stories. It did inspire the writer in me to pen a few short stories. The best hotels in Kodaikanal are found near this spot.

Summer is also the perfect time to visit Bryant Park as the Annual Horticulture Show is held in May which showcases beauties like green roses, cacti, and exotic plants from across the globe. The geek in me took me to the Solar Observatory. The building itself is a thing of beauty, surrounded by green hills but the real magic happens inside.

Kodaikanal in Monsoon (July to September)

Monsoon (July to September)

The months of June to September coat the valley in new shades of greens and blues but these shades will uplift your mood. The Kodaikanal Weather during monsoon is wet but if you can bear the chilly breeze then you are in for some splendid sights for the valley comes alive during monsoon, especially the waterfalls. The Silver Cascade Falls is known for a divine look as the silvery water comes gushing down the cliffs. The Vattakanal Falls is a paradise for nature lovers are some of the biggest  reasons to visit Kodaikanal . But, don’t think that the falls are the only attraction for monsoon as the Pine Forest, too, becomes fresh and enchanting. If you are seeking solace or want to enjoy a few moments of togetherness with your beloved then this is the walk you should embark on.

But, the valley receives about 10 inches of rainfall during these months. You need to be careful of the slippery slopes and carry adequate monsoon gear like boots and raincoats. Also, it is best to avoid Pillar Rocks during this time for the boulders become especially slippery. Another thing that you need to be wary of is leeches. The best way to avoid them is wearing long clothes and carrying the salt to get rid of any bug that hitches a ride on your leg.

Kodaikanal in Winter (December to February)

Kodaikanal

Trekkers will love the winters for the Kodaikanal Weather offers some amazing routes and views for the traveler. While the months of winter, which last from December to February, offer up temperatures that dip to 8 degrees, you should carry adequate woolen clothing and extra socks. Of course, at this time a walk around the town, visiting museums and heritage sites becomes pleasant. But, it is the hills that capture the heart and mind of the wandering soul. A winter picnic is a must and the best place to host one is at the Pillar Rocks.

The view from the three vertical boulders – that gave the place its name – is something that should not be missed. Green Valley View (Suicide Point) and the Silent Valley View justify their names and you can capture some heart-winning Instagram pictures. While I did wonder why anyone would want to jump to their death at such a beautiful point, that thought soon left my mind as the panoramic view captivated me. Another interesting spot was the Devil’s Kitchen which is located just 1 km away from the heritage Pillar Rocks. The gorge is always filled with thick clouds which seem as if a large kitchen is in action somewhere in unknown heavenly boudoirs up above!

A trip to forget all woes

Kodaikanal

I decided to take the hike because North hill stations were full for the winter and I wanted some peace. As I came across Kodaikanal in my search I did not think twice but booked my flight and hotel instantly. The decision turned out to be the best for not only did the place make me feel calmer but it also gave me time to enjoy my own company and learn not only about a city less known but also find many hidden gems in my own country.

The Kodaikanal Weather is just perfect for me as I love winters and it was also the best trek of my life. I discovered some love stories and made a few characters of my own to fill the pages of my diary, giving me new perspectives as I came back energized.

Ooty Tourism

Best Time to Visit Ooty, India

Ooty is a scenic hill town in southern India. It is surrounded by the Nilgiri Hills and is popularly known as the Queen of Hills. But when is the best time to visit Ooty?

Climate (if any) is the only serious deterrent which might spoil your travel plans to Ooty. But regarding climate too, Ooty has something different to offer all throughout the year. The summer is perhaps the best time to visit the place, if you are planning to visit all the tourist spots, including some adventurous treks and hand gliding.

Be it summer, monsoon or winter, Ooty will enthral you with the natural grandeur of the mountains and the hospitality of its residents. Being a cherished tourist destination for many, Ooty has got excellent connectivity with the cities and towns in the neighbourhood. And hire one of the best car rental companies in Ooty to ensure a comfortable ride with in Ooty.

Ooty in Summer (March – June)

The summer season is perhaps the best time to visit Ooty hill station. With the average temperature ranging around 25°C, days can be a little hot though, especially during the afternoon. But at other times, the heat is bearable. The occasional rains also sweep away some heat to keep Ooty enjoyable. And it even gets cold enough at night for you to put on some warm clothes.

With only the occasional warmth of the sun there to remind you that it is actually summer, you can comfortably visit any place you have in mind in and around Ooty, without having to fear the dreaded heat. It will also be a good way to escape the scorching heat, that will be burning the other parts of the country, at least for a few days. Besides it actually gets chilly during the night.

One can go out to witness the mesmerising views from Wenlock Downs or check out the intoxicating tea estates along the slopes. Avalanche Lake , Ooty Lake and Ooty Botanical Garden are the few other places to visit in Ooty during a summer evening.

Ooty is also the host of the famed flower show, which is usually organised around mid-May. Vegetable show in Kotagiri, fruit show in Coonoor and the spices show in Gudalur are other events around Ooty that are held in the same month.

Ooty in Monsoon (July – October)

If you plan to visit as many tourist spots as possible, monsoon season isn’t the best time to visit Ooty with family. The monsoons can be a real party crasher, if you are planning on covering maximum tourist spots in Ooty during your visit. But if you are at Ooty just as a nature enthusiast, then monsoon is the best time.

The mountains are filled with a new life, with, once dry waterfalls flowing wild and mountain rivers running fearlessly. A whole new range of flora reveals itself in the Nilgiris encouraged by the monsoons and you are surely in for a treat.

Never before seen plants and flowers fill the mountain slopes and valleys and the sheer wildness and beauty of these flowers will leave you in awe and screaming for more. But travelling from one spot to another can get real nasty during the monsoons, as mountain roads get slippery and visibility decreases due to heavy fog.

One of the pros of visiting Ooty in monsoon though, is that you won’t encounter a lot of tourists. Thus, you can enjoy some tranquil moments whether at Doddabetta Peak or Ooty Lake . Also, you can watch Pykara Falls and Kalhatti Falls in their full vigour. But because of the slippery rocks and muddy trails, trekking your way up to them might not be an option during monsoon.

The weather remains pleasant throughout. The temperature hovers between 15°C and 23°C and the heavy rains turn Ooty fresh and green. So, this is the best time to enjoy the views along with cups of freshly made masala tea.

Ooty in Winter (November – February)

Winter is a totally different ball game in Ooty. Though the treks and adventure sports have a high probability of being closed due to visibility and safety issues, you can visit all other popular tourist places. With the temperatures in between 5°C and 17°C and low visibility, adventure in Ooty isn’t a viable option in the winter season. The misty mountains and the chilling cold will definitely bring out the lover in you if you are travelling to Ooty for your honeymoon or if you are with your special person.

There will not be anyone who would not wish a morning walk through the misty winter roads of Ooty with the one you love. So, the concept of Best time to visit does not actually apply to Ooty because it is wonderful to visit during anytime of the year depending on your needs.

The days remain sunny, but the winds can make you shiver. So, you must carry warm clothes with you. Click some pictures at the famous shooting points in Ooty or take a ride on the Toy Train, it will be a lifelong memory for you. And winter also is the harvesting season for many tea estates. So, you might get to buy some fresh tea varieties from the local shops.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Department also organises a 3-day Tea and Tourism Festival in January. Rows of tea stalls with a range of tea varieties and flavours are up for tea-tasting sessions. You can also buy from them. Through cultural shows and performances, the festival also gives you an exclusive opportunity to witness local traditions.
