Just wanted to drop a line [belatedly] and thank you for a great tour of Rotorua recently. Craig and I had a great time and loved your flexible service and informative, yet relaxed, commentary. We had a good laugh with the WA chicks and a great couple from Cardiff so really a day well spent. Certainly would love to recommend you to anyone else and hope to cross paths with you again some day!
Can't speak highly enough of Kate who I called during an unfortunate incident in my life while on the road in Katikati. She arrived early, helped me with my problem, invited others to also help and the matter was resolved within a short time of Kate arriving on the scene. Many, many sincere thanks Kate for your kindness and caring.

Kate was our hero in taking care of all those details. Every step of the way, Kate was there to tell us what we needed to take care of, how to take care of it, and she offered so much advice in planning our excursions and our free time in Paris. Kate goes out of her way to make sure everything is perfect and memorable.”

From the beginning, he answered all of our questions and provided suggestions to help us make the most out of our trip. He is very knowledgeable and shares his enthusiasm for Disney with his clients. In the months and days leading up to our trip, Chris offered us updates on changes to policies or attractions as he learned about them. “Kate has arranged a trip to Europe and a trip to Disney World for our family, and I am very glad that I used her services for both trips. First, she gave us good advice on what to look for in a tour and helped us find the tour that was exactly what we wanted. Then, when the trip was cancelled (twice) due to the pandemic, she handled all of the rescheduling details, including the trip insurance, tour company, and airline. On our last booking, she even had a code that she applied to get us a better deal! When our trip finally did happen, she was in communication with us along the way to make sure things were going smoothly.”

How to Stay Safe when Traveling by Taxi

If you're traveling in a foreign country, you may end up needing to use a taxi cab to get from place to place. To stay safe when traveling by taxi, you must secure and keep an eye on all of your belongings and maintain a high level of alertness. Choose your cab with care, and don't be afraid to end the ride if you feel uncomfortable – especially if you are traveling alone. if you are disabled or are a woman, be extremely cautious. [1] X Research source

Choosing Your Taxi

Step 1 Book your cab in advance.

  • Licensed taxi services have dispatch numbers you can call to schedule your cab in advance. Ask the operator for the name or car number of the car that is scheduled to pick you up. This is especially important at airports, where there often are unlicensed cabs waiting outside to pick up desperate travelers.
  • You might also give your destination to the operator and ask about fares and traditional tips so you can get a reliable estimate of how much your trip will cost.
  • When the cab arrives, make sure it is the car you ordered.

Step 2 Use caution when calling in public.

  • For example, someone who works for an unscrupulous or illegal taxi service could call a car to come pick you up. You could mistakenly get into that car, thinking it was the one you just called.
  • Generally, avoid talking on the phone on a busy sidewalk. This not only increases the odds that you could be picked up by an illegal taxi, but also makes you vulnerable to muggers because you are distracted.

Step 3 Confirm prices in advance.

  • Once you enter the cab, explain to the driver that you already know how much the trip will cost. For example, if the taxi company charges a flat rate for trips to the airport, let the cab driver know that you're expecting that flat rate and not a metered fare.
  • If the driver disagrees or insists on charging you something different than what you were told in advance, get out of the car and call the taxi service immediately to report the discrepancy.

Step 4 Check for a badge.

  • If the badge looks damaged, or as though it has been tampered with, get out of the cab and call the taxi service immediately. While there may be no issue, you are better safe than sorry. The badge could have been stolen by an imposter who is posing as a legitimate cab driver.
  • A legitimate cab driver should have no qualms about showing you their identification. If they refuse to do so, get out of the cab and call the taxi service immediately.

Step 5 Visually inspect the car.

  • Keep in mind that if something turns you off or just doesn't "feel right" about the cab itself, or the driver, you don't have to get into the car. Simply call the taxi service and tell them that you had a bad feeling, or otherwise explain your concerns. If you're embarrassed to do this, you might want to call a different cab company.
  • In less developed countries, taxis may not be as well maintained as they are in North America and Europe. Take some time to look around the area and get a feel for the average condition of cabs so you know what to expect.

Step 6 Refuse to share a cab with a stranger.

  • Sometimes this is a ploy between an unscrupulous cab driver and a friend to rob or assault passengers. You get in the car, then the other person gets in the car. When you are robbed, the cab driver and the other person split the loot.
  • If you've gone out at night, you may meet somebody who offers to share a cab with you, saying they are staying in the same hotel as you are, or that they live close by and you would be going in the same direction. This too can be a ploy to rob, assault, or otherwise take advantage of you. Don't do it. Your safety is worth spending a little more for your ride.

Securing Your Belongings

Step 1 Keep your things close by.

  • If the cab has a trunk that locks, ask to put your suitcase there. Watch the cab driver place your suitcase in the trunk and make sure that the trunk door is closed completely before you get in the car.
  • Don't part with smaller bags, backpacks, or purses – especially if they have your wallet or cash inside them. The best place for these items is on the floor between your feet. For additional security, you can loop the strap around your leg.
  • Don't allow your belongings to be stowed on the exterior of the cab, such as on an overhead rack, as they can easily be stolen.

Step 2 Hide electronics and expensive items.

  • You may not think of these things as all that valuable or expensive, especially if they are commonplace in your home country, but they make you a target for thieves.
  • If at all possible, transfer such items to a bag you will keep with you, if you are carrying them in a larger suitcase that must be stored in the trunk.

Step 3 Sit in the middle of the backseat.

  • No matter how tempting it might be, keep your windows rolled up at all times. This may mean the cab becomes stuffy or overheated, but with the windows down someone can easily reach in and assault or rob you.
  • These precautions are particularly important if you are a woman who is traveling alone. Almost anywhere in the world, a woman traveling alone is vulnerable to opportunistic criminals.

Step 4 Have your keys ready.

  • Being organized and ready also shows that you are confident and in control. This makes you less likely to be targeted for an attack.
  • Keys threaded between your fingers also can be used for self-defense in the event you are assaulted or approached in a way that makes you uncomfortable.

Staying Alert

Step 1 Review maps of the area.

  • For example, if the taxi driver knows that you don't know anything about the area, they may take you on a long, meandering route to run up the fare.
  • However, in most countries if you give the driver a specific route they must follow it.
  • If the taxi driver goes in the wrong direction, or tries to take you on a different route or argue about which way to go, thank them for their time and exit the cab immediately.

Step 2 Let someone know you are traveling.

  • If someone knows you're in a cab, they'll know that if they don't hear from you within a certain amount of time that something might have happened to you. They can take steps to call the appropriate authorities.
  • If you are meeting someone at your destination, call or text them when you leave so they know when to expect you and can take action if you don't show up on time.

Step 3 Avoid traveling alone if intoxicated.

  • Protect yourself by not consuming alcohol if you are traveling alone, unless you are in your hotel or other protected place and won't need go anywhere.
  • If you do have alcohol – say, a couple of glasses of wine at dinner – drink a cup of coffee to sober up a little before your taxi arrives. Don't tell the cab driver that you've been drinking.

Step 4 Keep conversation strictly professional.

  • If the cab driver asks you personal questions, you can simply say "I don't feel comfortable talking about that." Remember that you are under no obligation to talk to your cab driver.
  • You also can tell the cab driver initially that you are not interested in carrying on a conversation. Tell them that you've had a long day and you simply want silence.

Step 5 Pay attention to local currency.

  • Learn about the local currency before you travel to an area, and know what to look for. If the cab driver gives you currency that you suspect is fake, ask them to exchange the bills. If they refuse, call the cab service immediately.

Step 6 Be familiar with emergency numbers.

  • Ideally, you should program this number in your phone so you can call it as quickly as possible if the need arises.

Step 7 Keep your phone close at hand.

  • If you have your phone in your hand, keep it lowered at lap level so no one on the street can see it.
  • Don't put your phone in your back pocket so that you're sitting on it. This can make it difficult to get out in an emergency situation.
  • If your phone is in a front pocket, make sure the pocket is deep enough that your phone won't slip out when you sit down.

Is There Uber in Bali, Indonesia? [2024 Travel Guide]

Wondering if there’s an Uber in Bali for your next adventure? You’re not alone.

Many travellers, myself included, have faced this question head-on while planning trips to this tropical paradise.

Having visited Bali twice, once for my honeymoon and again for a friend’s wedding, I’ve navigated the ins and outs of getting around the island.

Don't have time to read the full article?

Book a Bali Private Driver   for a hassle-free and comfortable travel experience around the island.

This post will dive into the reality of ride-sharing in Bali, exploring alternatives to Uber and offering practical tips to ensure your travel is smooth and stress-free.

Let’s tackle the transportation puzzle together, drawing from firsthand experiences and insights to make your Bali journey unforgettable.

Is There Uber in Bali?

So, you’re wondering if you can just Uber your way around Bali, right? Well, the quick answer is nope.

Uber, along with Lyft, isn’t available in Bali or anywhere else in Indonesia for that matter.

Even though these apps are super popular back in the States and some parts of Europe, they’re a no-go in Bali.

I know, it sounds a bit of a bummer that Uber’s off the table. Here’s the scoop: Uber bowed out of Southeast Asia in 2019.

They handed over their operations to Grab in exchange for a stake in the company. So, the Uber app? Yeah, it’s not going to be much help in Bali.

Alternative Ride-Sharing Apps (Uber Alternatives)

When you land in Bali, you’ll quickly realise that Uber isn’t an option, but don’t let that put a damper on your travel plans.

Bali’s got a couple of fantastic alternatives that have got you covered. I’ve used these services myself and can vouch for their convenience and reliability.

It’s Southeast Asia’s answer to Uber and works like a charm across Bali.

The app is user-friendly, and you can choose from a range of services, including quick rides, food delivery, and even parcel delivery.

Prices are upfront, so there’s no haggling or surprises.

During my honeymoon, Grab was a lifesaver when we needed to get to a romantic dinner in Seminyak and back to our hotel in Ubud.

It’s more than just a ride-sharing app; it’s an all-in-one service platform.

You can book a ride, order food, and even get a massage after a long flight! What’s unique about Gojek is its motorbike ride option, which is perfect for solo travellers or anyone looking to zip through traffic a bit faster.

Both apps require a local SIM card for the best experience, but that’s easily sorted with a quick visit to any convenience store.

They’re incredibly cheap and worth every penny for the ease they bring to your travel.

I bought my SIM card at the airport but recommend buying it in any convenience store as it is cheaper.

Travel Tips for Using Uber-like Apps in Bali

When using ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab in Bali, it’s smart to avoid the busy rush hours to skip higher prices and longer waits.

It means trying not to travel during the early morning (8-10 am) and late afternoon (4-6 pm) rush.

While tipping isn’t expected in Bali, giving a small tip to your driver for exceptional service is a nice way to show your gratitude.

Don’t worry too much about not speaking the same language as most drivers; they usually know enough English to help you get anywhere without any trouble.

And if you’re travelling alone and want to save money, consider taking a motorbike taxi.

It’s a quicker and less expensive option and adds a bit of adventure to your journey-make sure to hold on tight.

Taxi in Bali

Navigating Bali without Uber might seem daunting at first, but traditional taxis are a reliable alternative that has their own charm.

From my experiences, knowing a bit about how taxis work in Bali can make all the difference in getting around comfortably.

Blue Bird Taxis

They are the gold standard in Bali and my personal favourite. They’re known for their reliability, use of meters, and no-hassle service.

During my second visit to Bali, staying in Nusa Dua, I found myself using the Blue Bird app constantly.

Finding and booking a ride was a breeze, and the option to pay with a card directly through the app added an extra layer of convenience.

Plus, being able to tip the driver through the app felt like a nice touch of appreciation for their service.

The taxis are easy to spot with their iconic blue colour and bird logo, and I never had trouble getting a taxi, even in the more secluded area of Nusa Dua.

The best part? You can book a ride through their app, which is as convenient as any ride-sharing service.

The drivers are known for their reliability, and with the meter always running, there were never any surprises when it came to fares.

Tip: Stick to Blue Bird taxis for your travels around Bali. Other taxis might end up costing you more. Be aware that imitation Blue Bird taxis are out there, which can be misleading. To ensure you’re getting the real deal and avoid overpaying, booking your ride directly through the Blue Bird app is best. This way, you’re guaranteed a genuine service at a fair price.

Other Options for Getting Around Bali

Exploring Bali has become more convenient and varied, thanks to a mix of traditional and modern transportation methods.

Whether you prefer the independence of scooters or the ease of ride-sharing apps, there’s an option to suit every traveller’s needs.

Scooter Rental

Renting a scooter offers the ultimate freedom to explore Bali’s hidden gems at your own pace.

It’s affordable, with daily rentals costing between IDR 50,000 and IDR 100,000. However, navigating Bali’s bustling roads requires confidence and caution.

Always wear a helmet and consider your riding experience before opting for this mode of transport.

I’d advise against renting a scooter in Bali and navigating the roads on your own if you’re not familiar with the local traffic regulations. Scootering around Bali can pose risks, especially for those unaccustomed to the island’s driving conditions.

Private Drivers

Hiring a private driver is ideal for those prioritizing comfort and seeking local insights.

This option is particularly cost-effective for groups, allowing for a personalized itinerary to Bali’s best spots without the hassle of navigating on your own.

Renting a bicycle

Renting a bicycle is an excellent way to enjoy Bali’s scenery at a leisurely pace, ideal for areas like Ubud, where the landscape invites exploration.

Public Transport and Walking

Limited but available bus services like the Kura-Kura Bus connect major tourist spots affordably.

Walking is another eco-friendly way to explore Bali’s beauty, suitable for short distances and bustling areas like Seminyak or Canggu.

Guided Tours with Included Transport

Exploring Bali offers the chance to embark on numerous remarkable tours and adventures.

Most of these excursions conveniently include complimentary transport from and to your hotel, eliminating the need for personal transportation arrangements.

Here are some of my favourite activities that you can do in Bali with round-trip transfers:

Bali Rafting

Bali temple tour, mount batur sunrise trekking, getting from bali airport to your destination.

Arriving at Bali’s bustling airport can be the start of an unforgettable adventure, but figuring out the best way to get to your destination might seem daunting.

That’s where Welcome Pickups comes into play, offering a seamless and stress-free transfer service directly from the airport to your accommodation.

Welcome Pickups stands out for its convenience and reliability.

With a simple booking process, you can arrange your ride before you even land, ensuring that a friendly driver will be waiting for you as you step out of the airport.

This service takes the guesswork out of navigating through the taxi lines or negotiating fares after a long flight, letting you start your Bali experience on the right foot.

What truly sets Welcome Pickups apart is the personal touch. Drivers are hand-picked and speak English, offering not just a ride but also a warm welcome to the island.

They’re ready to share tips and insights about Bali, helping you feel more like a local and less like a tourist from the get-go.

Is There Uber Eats in Bali?

If you’re craving the convenience of food delivery while soaking up the sun in Bali, you might wonder if Uber Eats is available to satisfy those cravings.

The short answer is no, Uber Eats hasn’t made its way to Bali. But don’t let that dampen your spirits or your appetite!

Bali has its own vibrant scene of food delivery services that step in to fill the gap, ensuring you can still enjoy delicious meals delivered straight to your door.

Gojek and Grab are the frontrunners in Bali’s food delivery scene, with their respective services, GoFood and GrabFood.

These platforms offer a wide range of culinary delights, from local Indonesian dishes to international cuisine, all at the tap of an app.

What’s great about using Gojek and Grab for food delivery in Bali is the variety of food options and the user-friendly experience.

You can browse menus, read reviews, and place your order in minutes. Plus, the payment process is straightforward, with options for cash on delivery or digital payments, making it a breeze to settle your bill.

Is Gojek safe in Bali?

The answer is a resounding yes from my personal experiences and those of countless others.

Gojek prioritizes safety with features like GPS tracking, identity verification of drivers, and in-app safety features that allow you to share your ride details with trusted contacts.

During my time in Bali, using Gojek gave me peace of mind, knowing that I could easily get from point A to point B safely and efficiently.

Moreover, Gojek drivers are known for their professionalism and knowledge of the local area, which adds an extra layer of security, especially for tourists unfamiliar with Bali’s roads.

The app’s review system also allows you to see feedback from other users about their experiences with individual drivers, giving you an insight into what to expect before you even start your journey.

In addition to ride safety, Gojek’s food delivery service, GoFood, ensures that your meals are handled and delivered with care.

The app provides updates on your order status from the moment you place it until it arrives at your doorstep, ensuring transparency and reliability.

Are Taxis Expensive in Bali?

Navigating the cost of transportation is crucial for any traveller, especially when it comes to taxis, which are a popular choice for getting around Bali.

The question of whether taxis are expensive in Bali can have a varied answer, depending on several factors, including the type of taxi service you choose and your negotiation skills.

Traditional taxis, particularly metered taxis like Blue Bird, are known for offering fair and transparent pricing.

The meter ensures that you pay a rate that’s directly linked to the distance travelled.

From my own experience, hopping into a Blue Bird taxi always felt reasonable, especially for shorter distances within tourist hotspots like Seminyak, Kuta, or Ubud.

To give you an idea, a ride might cost you around 7000 IDR ($0.50 USD) per kilometre, which is quite affordable by international standards.

However, it’s worth noting that not all taxi experiences are created equal.

Non-metered taxis, which you might encounter outside of the airport or in less touristy areas, can end up being more expensive if you’re not adept at negotiating the fare upfront.

It’s not uncommon for these taxis to quote higher prices, especially to tourists, which can make them seem expensive compared to metered services.

FAQs: Is There Uber in Bali?

Is grab expensive in bali.

Grab, as a ride-sharing service in Bali, offers competitive pricing that is generally considered affordable, especially when compared to traditional taxi services.

Prices can vary based on demand, time of day, and specific routes, but overall, Grab provides a cost-effective way to navigate the island, with the added convenience of app-based booking and payment.

Which cab app works in Bali?

In Bali, the most popular cab apps that work efficiently are Grab and Gojek. Both offer a wide range of services, including ride-sharing, food delivery, and more.

Both locals and tourists widely use these apps for their convenience, reliability, and competitive pricing.

What can I use instead of Uber in Bali?

Instead of Uber in Bali, you can use Grab or Gojek, which are highly popular and reliable ride-sharing apps offering similar services.

These apps provide a convenient way to travel around the island, offering rides, food delivery, and other services, making them versatile alternatives to Uber.

Is Ola or Uber available in Bali?

Neither Ola nor Uber is available in Bali. The island’s ride-sharing needs are predominantly served by local apps like Grab and Gojek, which offer comprehensive services, including transportation, food delivery, and more, effectively filling the gap left by the absence of Ola and Uber.

What is the safest taxi app in Bali?

The safest taxi app in Bali is the Blue Bird app. Known for its reliability and safety, Blue Bird taxis offer metered rides with transparent pricing.

The app provides features like ride tracking, detailed driver information, and the option for in-app payments, ensuring a secure and trustworthy experience for passengers.

Do I need the PeduliLindungi app for Bali?

As of 5 April 2022, international travelers no longer need to fill out the International eHAC on the PeduliLindungi app to enter Indonesia, including Bali.

This change simplifies the entry process for visitors. However, the PeduliLindungi app may still be used for COVID-19 contact tracing and accessing certain public places within Indonesia to ensure public health and safety.

Is it safe to use Grab in Bali?

Yes, using Grab in Bali is considered safe. The app offers features like driver tracking, identity verification, and in-app payments, enhancing the safety and convenience of its users.

Both locals and tourists widely use Grab for its reliable service across the island.

How much is a taxi in Bali per day?

Hiring a taxi in Bali for a full day typically costs between IDR 500,000 to IDR 800,000, depending on the type of vehicle and the distance covered.

This rate includes a private driver for 8 to 10 hours, offering a convenient way to explore the island at your own pace. Prices may vary slightly based on the taxi company and any additional requirements.

Final Thoughts: Bali Ride-Sharing Apps

As we conclude our exploration of navigating Bali in the absence of Uber, it’s evident that while the renowned ride-sharing service may not be an option, Bali is well-equipped with a variety of alternatives to ensure your travel experience is seamless and enjoyable.

Whether it’s the convenience and cost-effectiveness of Grab and Gojek, the thrill of exploring on your own by renting a scooter, or the personalised touch of hiring a private driver, Bali has something for every type of traveller.

Each transportation method offers its unique benefits, from the autonomy of personal transport to the local insights provided by a private driver.

For those times when you’re keen to sample local dishes without stepping out of your accommodation, the food delivery services offered by Grab and Gojek are exactly what you need.

In planning your Bali adventure, weighing your preferences, budget, and the kinds of experiences you’re after is important.

I highly recommend opting for a private driver for an unparalleled travel experience; however, if cost is a concern, Blue Bird taxis and Grab are excellent alternatives that combine reliability with affordability.

And remember, securing travel insurance is crucial for your peace of mind, particularly if you intend to ride a scooter or partake in adventure activities.
