Bring the Victorian age alive with these historical visits
2023-03-03T11:13:00+00:00
Take your students on a trip back in time to the Victorian period with some of these outings, ranging from top museums to historic venues.
Students can experience life in an authentic Victorian school room at Beamish.
For those exploring the differences between schools now and schools in the Victorian period, a visit to Beamish, The Living Museum of the North in County Durham allows school groups to take part in a Victorian lesson, suitable for primary-aged children. This a truly immersive way for students to get to grips with what school life would have been like more than 100 years ago. Students will be expected to behave as though they are Victorian pupils - sensible and silent!
It was at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert raised their children, and where the former queen retreated after the death of her husband in 1861. A trip to the house will provide an insight into the private life of the monarch, while curriculum links for Key Stages 1-3 can help schools explore significant historical events from the period, develop an understanding of British history and learn about the British Empire.
Schools can also learn about the life of Queen Victoria and her role in society throughout the period at her childhood home in London - Kensington Palace . A range of education sessions are on offer, including the Victoria’s Toys workshop, which will give students a greater understanding of the monarch’s childhood, plus the toys and games available to children at that time.
Kensington Palace is the childhood home of Queen Victoria.
The HMS Warrior 1860 in Portsmouth was Britain’s first iron-hulled, armoured battleship and it was the pride of Queen Victoria’s fleet. Teachers looking for a unique venue to explore Victorian society with their students can participate in immersive workshops, discovery visits and learning activities on board the Victorian warship.
Meanwhile, a school trip to the Blists Hill Victorian Town in Shropshire, will see students transported back in time. Enjoy demonstrations, wander through authentic shops and cottages, and take part in educational workshops within the recreated Victorian Town. Students will also discover some of the extraordinary Victorian remedies at the Pharmacy to find out why you wouldn’t want to be caught with green candles at home.
Finally, Cadbury World might not seem like the best Victorian-themed destination for a trip, but the Victorians Talk provides an interesting discussion point for students. Interactive discussions will teach pupils about children during Victorian England, while pinpointing why Richard and George Cadbury were model Victorian workers – alongside a tour of Cadbury World, of course.
Enjoy a tasty, but historical visit at Cadbury World.
Similarly, schools visiting the historic estate of Tatton Park in Cheshire will see their students transformed into workers of the past, as they learn what life was like for people living in Victorian England and see first-hand the contrasts between the rich and the poor as they tour the living quarters in the house.
Finally, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, is also another top spot which offers a solid introduction for learning about this remarkable British period. From the dress collection, representing fashion during the 19th century, to the many paintings on display, the collections offer an insight into Victorian life like no other museum in the country.

In 2004 Age UK Oldham rescued the neglected building intending to open it for community use in the town centre, soon became fascinated by its history and realised its potential.
Generous funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, the Andrew Lloyd Webber Fund and Viridor has enabled Age UK Oldham to restore the building with its magnificent organ to its former glory, creating a local heritage centre which incorporates former cellar dwellings in the basement. Volunteer actors portraying local characters whose everyday lives have been carefully researched bring a lively aspect to the Heritage tours and school educational visits.
Education Pack
Our Schools Programme has been developed to provide children with an exciting way of engaging their young minds with history and encouraging them to use their imaginations and powers of creative thinking.
The site is a fantastic resource for schools to explore. We offer a range of unique opportunities that bring learning to life in a very special setting. Children from KS1 and KS2 gain a real understanding of what life was like in the Victorian period. The fun and interactive learning experiences and activity workshops will ensure children remain attentive and interested.
Our education team will engage and inspire your class with the story of George Street Chapel and the cellar dwellings. Through role play and interpretation, ‘time travelling’ enables children to travel back to the Victorian era, meeting real characters and learning about many aspects of Victorian life.
A series of activity workshops, worksheets and materials will provide your class with a hands-on experiential learning experience with clear and detailed links to the National Curriculum.
During your time at George Street Chapel, history will come alive as the children dress in costume and meet characters who lived, visited or worshipped at the former cellar dwellings and the Chapel during Victorian times.
Your class will experience hands-on activities which will illustrate the similarities and differences between the mid nineteenth century and today and learn about local history in a unique learning environment full of memories from the last two hundred years.
We are happy to work with you to devise a programme that will fit with your learning objectives. You can sample our standard visit packages or work with us to put together a personally tailored experience for your class.
Teachers can organise a free teacher visit in order to carry out a planning visit or risk assessment. This can be obtained by contacting our Education Manager.
How Your Day Will Work
You can choose either option for a full day tour.
Take part in all 4 interactive learning experiences in the cellar dwelling
- Life below George Street
- Chapel School Room
- Chapel experience
In the main chapel
- Enjoy 4 out of 10 Workshop Activities
Interactive Learning Experiences
The traditional day for the washing to be done was a Monday. Very few wives then went out to work, and to wash on Sundays and hang it on the line was thought rather disgraceful as the former dwellings are situated underneath the Chapel, this was strictly forbidden.
Martha Titter will be busily attending to her family’s washing as you arrive. As the former dwellings did not have the luxury of modern life, Martha attends to her washing outside with a dolly tub, posser and mangle.
Your class will be greeted by Martha dressed in Victorian costume. Martha will demonstrate how she deals with this huge weekly task of washing for her family of six. Pupils will be asked to help Martha as she washes in her dolly tub and hangs clothes with dolly pegs on her washing line.
LIFE BELOW GEORGE STREET
Mary Hall’s cellar dwelling is cramped, has no plumbing and is damp and draughty. This Back of George street experience gives a shocking insight into the lives of the poor Victorian working class.
Mary will show you around her modest home and explain to you how her family live, eat, sleep and play.
Mary has a large family and spends her day cleaning the house, cooking meals for her husband and children, making and mending clothes for everyone as well as helping sweep and dust the chapel daily.
Mary enjoys having some company as well as some help. Your class will be asked to help her with some of the tasks from sweeping to washing the family crockery in time for dinner.
CHAPEL SCHOOL ROOM
Your class will say goodbye to Mary Hall and her home – it’s time for school…. Our school experience brings the 1850 classroom to life.
It was rarely enjoyable, school was disciplined and regimented – sometimes even brutal.
Miss Hopwood will ring the bell ‘It’s time for school!’
When the bell rings, the children will line up in silence in height order – boys first, have their hands inspected and washed in cold water with carbolic soap.
They will recite morning prayers, have a lesson in writing using slates and slate pencils and practice arithmetic and times tables.
CHAPEL EXPERIENCE
Towards the end of your day with us all children will join together for a service in the chapel led by our 1850’s visiting minister.
Children will assist in making sure the chapel is ready for service and help with sweeping and dusting as they remember the motto from the chapel school ‘ Cleanliness if next to Godliness’
Loud strong singing voices are needed to impress our visitor and you will be joined by some of the characters you have met throughout your day.
Chapel Workshop Activities
Choose four from a carousel of ten visual, auditory and kinaesthetic workshop activities.
These will encourage independent learning through first hand experiences central to the curriculum. Your class will divide into smaller groups of up to 8 and spend 25 minutes in each activity area. All activities are supported with an Education Team interactor in costume, who will work alongside the group throughout.
Activity One: HISTORICAL DETECTIVE
A bag has been found on the steps of the chapel …who does it belong to?? Together in a group, children will build up a picture of the owner using the evidence they find inside.
Could your group be our next Chapel Detective and help solve the mystery of the bag?
Worksheets support this activity
Activity Two: WICKED WINDOWS
Coloured glass panels in our chapel windows make impressive reflections.
Children create their own stained glass window with the use of art materials.
The window template has the same outside structure but also a space in the middle for the children to add their own central picture.
Activity Three: COPY CAT
Children can take an outline rubbing of both Martha & Joseph Titter from our etched blackboards or colour in the figures directly with chalk.
Children may also draw their own figures copying from scratch.
A range of chalks, pencils and crayons is available for this activity
Activity Four: I-SPY FLIPBOOK
A fun group activity where children play i-spy and look around the chapel identifying photographs of chapel items with questions to answer.
I-Spy develops speaking and listening skills in a group context.
A worksheet supports this activity
Activity Five: TEAM JIGSAW
Two groups of children work together on this wonderful chapel jigsaw which includes a historical timeline including monarchs from 1815 and important events in the chapel and Oldham’s history.
Chalk rubbings can be made once the jigsaw is complete – this activity involves two groups working simultaneously
Activity Six: EASY EASELS
Using an easel like the artists of yesteryear, join the dots to draw the magnificent chapel organ. Bring the organ to life using a range of chalks, pencils and crayons.
Blank paper is available for older children who wish to draw the organ free hand
Activity Seven: PEG PEOPLE
A creative and simple craft project for children.
Following clear instructions from the costumed guide children make their own unique chapel peg person.
A great fun activity and a memory to take home
Activity Eight: PEN AND INK
This great little art activity for children demonstrates the basics of calligraphic lettering using a nib pen and ink
Handwriting samplers to complete and a sand tray to practice letter style and flow
Activity Nine: CHAPEL HUNTER
Themed fun activity trail around the Chapel searching for clues – a great activity to keep them moving and searching.
A worksheet completed on the trail keeps them thinking individually and working as a team to solve the clues and find the hidden treasure. This includes activity on the top floor balcony and needs close supervision – see risk assessment
Activity Ten: STORY TELLER
Story telling is a powerful way to engage children and encourages them to listen to a parable and follow on with a group discussion
Led by a costumed interactor this lovely activity will bring our story to life.

- Education Programme
In 1887, the Prince and Princess of Wales honour Tatton with a visit. To help with the preparations, your children will be recruited as extra servants and given the names of those who actually worked at Tatton in the 19th century. Before getting down to work, new servants are given strict instructions by the butler or housekeeper regarding their behaviour and social status of the time. The servants’ will be involved in the day to day running of the mansion through a range of hands on activities. New servants are also taken around the mansion so they can see how much work there is to be done and what life was like living in a grand house.
Learning Outcomes:
Group size:.
This programme can accommodate 12-48 children . If you have a larger group, we are happy to discuss a bespoke timetable with you.
Activities:
Children will have the opportunity to tour the Mansion and see the contrast between the beautiful state rooms and the stark servant's quarters. They will experience life as a Victorian servant through a number of hands on activities selected from the following range: baking scones, scrubbing, polishing, laying tables and making beds. The children's aim is to impress the Butler/Housekeeper in hope that they will be given a job to work as part of the servant team at Tatton Park, serving the home of the Egerton family.
Children may wish to come dressed up for the experience - download our costume sheet (PDF, 486KB) for some ideas!
Make an enquiry using our Schools Enquiry form or contact us to discuss your requirements at [email protected] / 01625 374428.

School Trips Yorkshire
Yorkshire is one of the largest regions in the UK, making it not only geographically diverse, but also culturally varied making this region a must see when planning a school trip. If your class is looking to study geography or geology, then you’ve come to the right place. Areas such as the North York Moors and the Peak District National Park are perfect for students who want to discover the beauty of the natural environment. At the other end of the spectrum, you may wish to visit Spurn Point and Flamborough Head, where students can explore the rugged Jurassic coastline and really immerse themselves into the geographical curriculum.
Alongside geography and geology, Yorkshire also has lots to offer when it comes to other areas of the curriculum. Yorkshire is an area which is particularly rich with history. From the Norman Conquest to the Wars of the Roses, Yorkshire has played a central role in some of England’s greatest historical developments. Whether you want to explore the spooky side of Yorkshire on the Shadows of York Ghost Walk, or would rather focus on the history of the Vikings with one of our many Viking Workshops, there is something here for students from all Key Stages who are looking to further their historical knowledge.
Yorkshire truly is a place where education can thrive and prosper. There are numerous school trip venues, accommodation and walking tours where learning can be taken outside of the classroom, into a more engaging and stimulating environment. It is here that students will improve their understanding and perhaps even increase their interest in that particular subject.

Victorian Visits for Schools
Schoolteacher session.
Pupils are given a Victorian penny to pay their rather formidable Victorian School Mistress or School Master in the morning and then use authentically made slate boards and dip pens to engage in real Victorian lessons.
After an exhausting drill(!), a specially planned playtime is incorporated into the morning when children are encouraged to play with a range of authentically reproduced and some antique Victorian toys.
Children are allowed to use the playground basket of toys if they behave well!
Children use a range of resources including a class set of slate boards and quill pens and ink.
Parlour Games
Parlour games with the lady.
Then, in the afternoon, children learn all about what it might be like when they return from school to their Victorian home. Lady Lisa’s butler, Poyser is otherwise engaged so pupils are expected to help the Victorian lady by laying her table properly for dinner and are then rewarded with parlour games and gossip over tea.
Meanwhile, her butler, Poyser oversees groups using a selection of Victorian antique artefacts to engage in an array of household tasks including washing linen napkins, using a posher; drying them using a mangle; pegging them up on a line with wooden pegs etc.
Pastimes, Toys & Games
High quality, reproduction and original toys are presented to the children in traditional wicker baskets for them to play with and discover the various mechanisms.
Additionally, each small group has a larger or special toy to engage with, such as bagatelle, shove ha’penny and a zoetrope. The baskets of toys carousel around the groups until all have been seen, when the class gather for a plenary.
Storytelling
The day usually ends with groups coming together for storytelling from the lady, who is altogether more sympathetic than the School Ma’am!
Resources and costumes for this day (as with all of the Specialists’ work) are researched to a high level and are mainly of museum grade. Many objects for this session are real antiques. Our research shows that one of our parlour games is of local origin, being played specifically in the East Midlands in Victorian times.
We, Greg and Lisa, work fully in role as Victorians. This means that we use our subject knowledge to respond to questions and talk as they would do. To achieve this we use an antiquated pattern of speech to lend a realistic feel to our words whilst remaining clear enough for children to understand. The overall experience for children is then an immersive one where they feel they have truly met a Victorian and gained a picture of Victorian times. The sessions are interactive and involve all of the children.
The day is fully risk assessed and this can be emailed upon request. Confirmation of booking is taken as a contract between the school and The Specialists and acceptance of our T & C’s .
Greg and Lisa McCarthy have many years of experience working with children. Greg is a teacher and Lisa a former Occupational Therapist in learning disabilities. Both have DBS and public liability insurance.
Resources are meticulously researched and authentic to the period.

History of Roman Britain
Invasion, conquest and settlement - trips and workshops
The Roman Conquest and invasion of 43 AD was far from decisive, indeed it took a few decades for the Romans to stretch their influence across much of the length and breadth of our isles. Repeated skirmishes forced the Romans to settle garrisons of troops here and it is this military heritage that survives in a lot of places to this day and is the focus for many Roman school trips.
Away from the front line which was pushing through Wales, past the Boudicca rebellion, towards Scotland (where they built Hadrian's Wall) Romans who had wealth or positions of power built themselves grand villas in the Mediterranean style, with magnificent mosaic floors, which must have looked completely alien to local people. From the evidence that does survive from the time, it appears that not all of the local inhabitants of Britain were keen to see that back of the Romans, with many seeming to adapt to a Roman way of life; clearly borrowing architectural styles.
Despite the time which has elapsed since the Romans left, and the many layers of building and destruction that have taken place in the interim, there are still many treasures up and down the country that give Roman school trips a wonderful insight into Roman life and the Romanisation of local people. If you are studying any aspect of the Roman occupation you will find some excellent Roman school visit opportunities on this page.
