5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Deciding on a Guided Tour

Booking your ticket to the far-off destination you’ve been dreaming of is a thrilling experience in itself. The exhilaration of knowing you are about to have the adventure of a lifetime is enough to keep you riding high for weeks or even months.

But if you're not a planner by nature, spending hours figuring out the logistics of your trip can be a serious buzzkill.

Thankfully, travel companies are making it easier than ever for travelers to head out on breathtaking excursions without planning a single thing. If you’re up to trying something new but don’t have time to figure out all the details, then perhaps it’s best to leave it up to the professionals.

On a recent journey to South America, I tagged along with Mountain Lodges of Peru , a travel company offering a unique take on guided tours. (It’s no wonder this company was named one of the best tour operators in Travel + Leisure ’s 2017 World's Best Awards .)

From transportation, to food, to lodging, right down to the pack mules for the Inca Trail , every single moment of this trip was meticulously planned for our group. All we had to do was take in everything Peru had to offer, worry-free.

If you’re hesitant to book a guided trip, ask yourself these five crucial questions to set your mind at ease before putting your travels in someone else’s hands.

How large is your group?

If I learned one thing about guided tours on my trip through Peru, it was that they are the ultimate way to see a new destination as a solo traveler .

Upon landing in Cusco at 6 a.m. following a nine-hour overnight flight from Los Angeles, a member of the Mountain Lodges of Peru team was there to greet me, help with my bags, and get me to my hotel so I could get back to bed before our big adventure began. As a woman traveling alone to a country I had never visited, it was quite reassuring to know I wasn’t simply riding along in the dark with total strangers.

How comfortable are you traveling to a new and unfamiliar place?

If you’re traveling to a destination where you’ve been once or twice, then perhaps you won’t feel the need for a guide, instead opting to re-visit all your favorite haunts. But, if you’re going somewhere new and you don’t know the language or the location well — or are simply looking for a new take on a classic — then a group guided tour may be the ideal answer.

Having a guide to share the ins and outs of Peruvian travel culture proved crucial more than once on my trip. For example, in Peru it’s customary to tip a few sol to people you take pictures of, especially those dressed in traditional clothing at its many cultural sites. This was something our guides informed us of in the beginning of our trip, along with the custom of tipping to use the public toilets in many of the villages and towns we passed through. And perhaps best of all, our guides also carried plenty of extra supplies with them along the routes, just in case.

How deep do you want to dive into a new culture?

Beyond feeling like I was truly immersing myself in the Peruvian culture thanks to my intrepid guides who explained every sight and sound’s importance to the country in detail, I also learned a great deal by listening in on what other travelers on my trip were asking.

Moreover, during our journey, our guides took us to places other tourists don't venture to, like the town of Choquecancha, where we met with master weavers to learn about their trade and have a peaceful lunch with them in their own shop. While I had my own questions for these women, it was an added bonus to join conversations they were having with my fellow tour group participants.

There, I was able to learn things I didn’t even realize I had questions about, like how the women dye their threads in such remote locations (they boil local vegetation and dip the alpaca wool in and out throughout the day), and just what their different hat styles really mean (it’s an indicator of their marital status. If only it were that easy in the United States).

Thanks to my tour group's unique partnerships within the communities they pass through, we were given unfettered access to the people and places that make Peru so unique. And that’s an experience I would have a hard time finding on my own.

Is your location particularly difficult to travel around in?

In Peru, the roads are thin and winding, the mountains are endlessly high, and some areas are so steep and so narrow to climb that had my guide not been there to show me the way, I may have turned back more than once. But having the backing of someone who has been there once or twice (or a thousand times) gave me the complete sense of calm I needed to let go of all travel fears and anxiety .

And sure, not every destination is as treacherous sounding as climbing a 13,000-foot elevation, but you know what, navigating the streets of Rome, Tokyo, or Rio can be just as confusing. A guided tour offers you the chance to not worry about which route is best, as someone else has already determined that for you.

Do you find value in sharing experiences or would you rather have time to self-reflect?

Going to Peru I knew I’d see a lot, learn a lot, and have plenty of time to soak up the culture, but one thing I didn’t anticipate was how easily I’d make a host of new friends and how crucial they’d become to my journey.

Each night, our tour group would gather over a meal to discuss the plans for the next day and also share with one another what we had learned along the way. It was in these shared moments that I felt even more connected to my trip and was able to see the same experience through other perspectives.

But the guided tour also offered me the opportunity to break away from the group whenever I chose to do so to take a quiet moment to myself. Be that over morning tea (or coca leaves in Peru), an evening stroll, stepping away in Machu Picchu to soak it all in, or simply choosing to not take part in a guided activity, those little moments were just as essential to the enjoyment of my travels as the guided days.

And, on this particular trip, I was able to choose which adventure I wanted to go on each day: a guided hike or a guided cultural exchange, which meant I could still personalize my travels.

In the end it’s important to remember it’s your money, your time, and your own personal journey, so do what’s right for you to ensure it’s the fulfilling experience you were hoping for.

10 Tips for Being a Good Tour Guide

In the spring of 2013, when a hint of warmer weather got us ready to think about being outside, we put together a toolkit with ideas to help you organize a tour in your community . But don’t let the current chilly winter season stop you from giving―or going on―tours.

Instead, use these 10 tips, compiled by Johns Hopkins, Executive Director of Baltimore Heritage , to help you be the best tour guide you can be. (Not a tour guide? These tips can also give you insight into being a good tour goer.)

1. Face the crowd, not what you’re talking about. Tour guides often get so wrapped up in their subject they forget to face the people they are addressing. One secret to avoid this is to designate somebody in the crowd to interrupt you if they can’t hear you.

2. Be personal. No matter how much we love buildings, it’s a fact that people connect with people. So it’s good to have a few personal anecdotes ready, even if they’re just about past tours you've done. You’ll build a more personal connection to your group and create a memorable tour.

3. Tell a story (historical or contemporary). Make sure you have a few fun and compelling stories to tell about the buildings and sites you’re looking at. People are more likely to feel engaged when they are listening to a story, rather than a list of dates and names.

4. Get moving right away. Tours often get bogged down before they ever begin with tour guides doing the “big wind-up”―introductions, setting the theme, providing context, etc. Plan to scrap 90% of it.

Hint: If you have a script, the first line should tell you: “Move thirty feet up the street before you say anything.”

5. Don’t worry about being perfect. People don’t expect you to be perfect. Set the stage for human imperfection by acknowledging that people who may know more than you should speak up and share their knowledge with the group. The more interactive the tour is, the better!

6. Get help to get organized. Try to get a volunteer to check people in so you can chat with tour goers. People give tours for many reasons, but a big one is to meet new people, and the time before the tour is a great chance to get to know your group.

Hint: If you don’t have a volunteer beforehand, ask somebody on the spot. (They’ll love it!)

7. End on time. (Or try very hard to.) Try like crazy to end on time. Nobody wants to feel like they are in tour jail. Tours on paper always seem too short and on the ground are always too long. Two hours is the absolute maximum. An hour to an hour and a half is better.

8. Limit your number of speakers. It’s hard to talk for just five minutes, so when you have multiple guides talking about different subject areas, it’s easy to lose track of time. Avoid it if you can, but, if you do have several different guides with you, designate one as the lead guide and the others as experts in a specific area.

9. Send a follow-up email. Follow up with an email―it can be as simple as a “thank you” note. If you can follow the tour with another contact, by email or otherwise, that’s another step towards creating a better link between the tour taker and your organization.

10. Avoid these traps:

• “12 (or 20…) people on the tour is the max.” Rather, let the space and tour guide set the scene.
• “You MUST plan everything out ahead of time.” In fact, a little spontaneity is good.
• “Don’t do outdoor tours in the winter.” People will still come, even in the snow.
• “Always have a backup plan in case it rains.” Don’t worry, people will come out in the rain, and it’s much easier than rescheduling.

The Pros and Cons of Guided Tours

As travel bloggers, we face a very real dilemma: Do we try to see and experience as much as possible during our trip, or do we allow ourselves more time to explore and wander at our leisure?

Both approaches have their own unique benefits and drawbacks – and if you find yourself wondering which is right for you, this blog will help you decide!

The Pros of Guided Tours

1. you get to see all the major points of interest. .

We took a tour bus to Mount Rainier National Park and were able to see all the items on our bucket list:

• Mt. Rainier (of course)
• Grove of the Patriarchs
• Reflection Lake
• Christine, Myrtle and Narada Falls

2. You always have someone to take your photo. 

What’s more annoying than getting home from your trip only to realize all you have on your camera are selfies of your giant face with few recognizable details in the background?

Gone are the days of the selfie stick and, with them, all the semi-decent shots of you and your fellow traveler(s). But fear not! When traveling in a group, you can ask your tourmates to snap a few shots for you.

Disclaimer: OK, so the photos might not always be great, but at least they show more than your right arm and face.

3. [For extroverts only] You get to meet other travelers.

There’s something special about sharing an adventure with a bunch of strangers. During a guided tour to the Loire Valley in France, we ate a private, family-style meal at Château de Nitray with our tourmates, and it ended up being one of our favorite parts of the entire trip!

4. You don’t have to worry about transportation.

There are few things more terrifying than navigating public transportation in an unfamiliar destination, especially one in which you don’t know the local language.

We found ourselves in Paris trying to navigate the RER for a trip to Versailles. Though we successfully purchased our train tickets at the kiosks, the digital screens didn’t show any trains going to Versailles. Turns out, the announcements they were playing on the overhead speakers (in French) alerted travelers that there would be no trains to Versailles that day.

When we got back to the land of free wifi (thank you, Hotel Regina!), we booked a coach bus. We were thankful to have reliable – and air conditioned – transportation on this trip and many others!

5. You get the inside scoop. 

With a local tour guide, you get more than just what’s written on the brochure. You get an insider’s perspective and opinion on the locale’s history, impact, people, traditions, celebrations and more. You discover the hidden gems and the funny stories that give each destination its character.

The Cons of Guided Tours

1. it always feels rushed..

No matter what tour you take or how long you’re at your destination, a guided tour always feels rushed. We’ve missed out on photo ops and off-the-beaten-path adventures by taking guided tours during which there’s no time to stop for these last-minute detours.

The photo above was taken through a bus window during a guided tour. We wanted to beg the driver to please pull over and stop so we could capture this beautiful scene, but we were on a time budget and couldn’t afford to do so.

2. There are usually people in your footage.

If you’re traveling with a large group, chances are that some of your tourmates will photobomb you. In Mount Rainier National Park, Mike was carefully setting up a shot of me walking across a bridge, under which was a beautiful waterfall.

As I was “acting” my way to the other side of the bridge, a group of our tourmates thought I was lost and swiftly entered the shot to guide me to a different location. Bye bye, dreamy footage. Hello, photobombers.

3. [For introverts only] You have to spend time with other travelers.

For some travelers, being with a group of strangers all day is a nightmare. It really depends on the crowd – we’ve had wonderful tourmates and we’ve had loud, obnoxious ones (who you can hear in every video we shot).

If you have time, call the tour company in advance and ask about the size of the tour group. This will help you decide which tour to take – or whether to take one at all.

4. Certain tours might not be worth your investment.

Guided tours range in price, but some can be pretty expensive depending on your destination. In some cases, they might not be worth your investment at all.

Consider this: We booked our Mt. Rainier day trip in advance and figured the weather probably wouldn’t be great. What we didn’t know is that when the weather isn’t great, it affects your chances of seeing the mountain at all, which was the main reason we booked the day trip.

When I asked our tour guide what our chances were of seeing Mt. Rainier, he wouldn’t even say. For a tour that cost $130 per person, that was a pretty risky gamble!

5. Guided tours can be exhausting.

I know, I know – first-world problems. But guided tours can seriously take a toll on you!

Most of our tours have been 12-hour day trips. We get up at the crack of dawn, head to the meet-up spot with nothing but a cup of coffee in our stomachs and set off on a long and often draining tour.

This is usually the trade-off when you decide that you want to see everything on your bucket list.

Western USA National Parks Loop

One of the best group trips I have ever been on. Rene was absolutely fantastic! Zion national park, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon are absolutely amazing places to visit. Photos can not do justice to the sheer magnificent beauty. Our group was amazing, friendly, fun, always on time and ages 30s-60s. The accommodations were sufficient and the hikes were manageable even for someone like myself who is not the most physically fit. I would suggest arriving a day or 2 early in Vegas or staying the night you return to get the most out of the experience. The Hoover dam is not included but there are short day trips from Vegas that cover this area which is definitely worthwhile. The days were long but there was sufficient rest at night to cope with some of the early morning wake up times. Which was WELL worth it!! Seeing the Grand Canyon at sunset was a sight I will never forget. If I can give 10 stars I would. This was my first intrepid trip and I have to say it won’t be the last. Even though we were unable to kayak lake Powell because time of year, we saw antelope canyon which was quite spectacular. Monument valley was also an experience to remember. If you have the opportunity to go, do it! You won’t regret one minute!

We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

We thoroughly enjoyed the 7-day tour of the US southwest . We love the destinations included in the tour, every place we visited is on our bucket list. I wanted to pinch myself every day that I visited those iconic and beautiful places as shown in my photos below. We enjoyed all the extra, optional experiences that were suggested by the tour guide. They added more fun to the tour. The Hummer tour in Moab, Utah was one of the optional experiences and it was a blast! Not only it’s fun, you get to see the amazing scenery during the sunset. One previous review mentioned he or she was forced to participate in the Navajo taco dinner in Monument Valley. That comment is not true. You have a choice not to do that and the guide can make a different arrangement for you. The optional Navajo taco dinner is one of the highlights of the tour that we will remember for a long time. It would be a shame not to have this cultural experience when you get to meet Navajo people when you are in the Navajo Nation! Our tour guide, John did a fantastic job. He was full of enthusiasm and energy. He kept the tour well organized and always provided information we needed. We highly recommend the tour.

Are Guided Theme Tours Enlightening or Infuriating? We Try and Settle the Debate

G enerally speaking, there are two types of travelers: those who love guided tours, and those who would rather be trampled by sheep than be herded like them into a tourist attraction. Tours are as old as the tourism industry itself, but theme tours are a newer phenomenon. Promising an inside look at your favorite movies, books, and TV shows, they offer an experience many argue you simply can’t get on your own.

A tour of Game of Thrones filming locations in Northern Ireland can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a Thrones fan, but fundamental questions remain: Is it worth it? Is it too expensive? Couldn’t I just do it on my own?

Your stance on guided theme tours likely speaks volumes about who you are as a traveler and what your priorities are. Unsurprisingly, there are people on the Matador Network staff who fall on either side: Senior copy editor Aryana Azari, a fan of guided theme tours who writes that they’re more on the enlightening side of life, and senior staff writer Eben Diskin, who believes that guide tours are infuriating.

Infuriating: The high cost often doesn’t match the experience

Countless guided tours are being offered around the world. Often, the sell is that you’re getting a super exclusive behind-the-scenes look that simply isn’t accessible to most tourists. The reality, however, is you’re paying an exorbitant fee for the convenience of not having to plan your itinerary.

On September 16, 2021, a Bridgerton-themed tour of London and Bath is being offered for fans of the popular Regency-era Netflix series. Guests will enjoy the convenience of getting shepherded around the country to filming locations like Hampton Court Palace, the Bath Assembly Rooms, a Victorian-era pub, and more. The experience can be yours for just $965, and it’s an absolute steal — though probably not the kind you’re thinking of.

Luckily, it’s not a black-and-white proposition. You can usually take the exact same tour — or one very similar — for a fraction of the cost simply by planning it yourself. The Hampton Court Palace and Bath Assembly Rooms aren’t reserved for those who happen to be on a “Bridgerton superfan tour.” Just go there yourself. Do you want the Great Hall of Hogwarts? Just wander into Christchurch College’s dining hall in Oxford. If you want to check out the castle from the opening scene of Monty Python and the Holy Grail — Drive to Doune Castle in Scotland. You’ll occasionally have to pay a minor entry fee, but it’s nothing compared to the hundreds of dollars you’re shelling out to a tour company for the same experience.

If money is no object, go for the theme tour. You probably won’t be disappointed. But if you have any concern for your wallet — and an extra hour on your hands — think twice and plan your own trip.

Enlightening: Guides handle all of the logistics

Any trip involves planning, financial management, and careful organization. From booking the flight and accommodation to checking when the attractions you want to visit are open, there’s so much to map out. And if you’re one of those travelers who don’t do much planning before arriving at your destination, you could find out at the very last minute that something you wanted to do is closed while you’re there. Taking all that on alone can be overwhelming. You may even push off a trip further into the future because it gets too daunting.

Booking a tour eliminates some of that work, and it helps alleviate a good chunk of the stress you have to deal with. A tour company will handle the logistics of getting you to the sights you want to see when you want to see them and take you back to your accommodation at the end of the day.

Infuriating: Lack of freedom

Guided tours are known for rigid structures. A half-day city walking tour is one thing, but many theme tours are multi-day group excursions that tax your patience as well as your bank account. You must wake up at an appointed time for breakfast, meet the group in a designated location for a morning tour, have lunch with the group, all while the tour guide shouts trivia at you — maybe 20 percent of which you’ll actually find interesting. Feel like taking a few hours to explore the city on your own? Too bad. If you’re lucky, you’ll get an hour of “free time” in the afternoon. If you’re unlucky, you’ll have to crowd into a tour bus and participate in an elementary school-esque head count several times a day.

By nature, guided tours are restrictive experiences. You see only what the tour company wants you to see. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t leave much room for personal adventure or exploration. You’re on their time, their schedule, and if you don’t like it, you’re pretty much trapped. And you’d better hope you get along with your fellow tour-mates, especially if your tour lasts a few days. You’ll be sharing hotels, meals, and experiences with the same dozen or so people in extremely close quarters. Sure, maybe you’ll hit it off swimmingly and make some lifelong friends — or perhaps you’ll have nightmarish flashbacks to that time you were trapped in an escape room with people you couldn’t stand.

Enlightening: Friends and good convo are built in from the get-go

Making friends while traveling is one of the best parts of any trip. I’ve met new friends while at a bar, waiting in lines for a restaurant, and just simply walking around. But it can be hard to strike up a conversation with a random stranger. It can even be anxiety-inducing for some, which is why tours of any kind with a set group are great: You have new friends built right into the experience. The shared experience of traveling will be something you all bond over, and since you’re spending so much time together, talking will happen. Even the topic of conversation is built-in — travel and the places you’re all visiting — so there’s no need to worry about what to talk about.

I’ve done tours in places like Scotland, Ireland, and Egypt, and the friendships I’ve made on them have lasted well beyond the one tour. We’ve kept in contact ever since, and I’ve even traveled again with some of those same people.

Infuriating: It ruins the theme’s magic

Solar eclipse glasses are needed for safety, but they sure are confusing. What to know.

Editor's note: An updated cloud forecast for the April 2024 total solar eclipse is in. Read the latest eclipse forecast and news as of Wednesday, April 3 .

You can't control the weather or the traffic , but one thing you can do right now ahead of the total solar eclipse is to get yourself a pair of special eclipse glasses , so you can safely view the cosmic spectacle.

The total eclipse will cross over a dozen states as it traverses from Texas to Maine on the afternoon of April 8.  Millions of people are expected to travel  to see it.

Astronomers and other experts say that eclipse watchers should wear  specialized eyewear  crafted to  protect your sensitive retinas  from permanent damage. And that means eclipse glasses .

Fortunately, solar eclipse glasses are still readily available  from plenty of vendors across the internet. Unfortunately, there's fears of fake glasses , and sometimes testing your glasses at home is the best way to know if they're safe.

Here's  what to know  about eclipse glasses and where you can get a pair of your own.

Where to find solar eclipse glasses

As the eclipse approaches, many places like local libraries, astronomical observatories, schools and other public agencies are providing proper eyewear, often for free.

Or you can just order them on the internet: Many eclipse websites like GreatAmericanEclipse.com and NationalEclipse.com sell a variety of eyewear products, along with plenty of other gadgets one may need to see the eclipse.

Of course,  Amazon  and plenty of other online retailers are also selling solar eclipse glasses in bulk, meaning you'll have plenty to share with your friends and family. American Paper Optics, the nation's largest supplier of eclipse glasses, even offers  express shipping  across the country.

Watch out for fake glasses

With online platforms like Amazon listing thousands of eclipse viewers, fears of fake or counterfeit glasses have grown.

"We do see glasses coming from China that have printing on them that say they're made in the U.S. or that they are made by one of the American manufacturers," Rick Fienberg, the project manager of the American Astronomical Society's solar eclipse task force, told USA TODAY.

When in doubt, buyers should refer back to the list of  official sellers and manufacturers maintained by the AAS , which communicates directly with sellers and manufacturers and checks test reports.

The list includes well-known North American manufacturers like American Paper Optics, as well as several large grocery and retail chains in the U.S. like Walmart, Lowe's and Kroger.

Real, but rare, examples of eye damage

Doctors and a rare set of eclipse watchers have warned  about watching the eclipse without adequate eclipse glasses or with the naked eye that has resulted in rare cases of eye damage. The damage occurs because people's natural response to squint when looking at direct sunlight does not get triggered when a partial eclipse happens.

Such was the case with one Staten Island woman who  watched the 2017 eclipse using faulty glasses that caused severe retinal damage. Doctors from Mount Sinai's New York Eye and Ear Infirmary chronicled this luckily rare case in  JAMA Ophthalmology , a medical journal. The woman told doctors that she had  gazed at the moon passing in front of the sun  through what she  thought were protective glasses . The damage on her left retina, the area at the back of the eye where the brain receives images, looked like the shape of a partial  eclipse .

"It's a very focused beam of high-energy light from the sun itself,” Dr. Avnish Deobhakta, an ophthalmologist at the Mount Sinai infirmary who treated the woman, told USA TODAY. “It can actually destroy parts of the retina, and certainly destroy it in the shape of an eclipse.”

How can you test eclipse glasses?

NASA shared an easy method to check eclipse glasses at home.

Buyers should put on their glasses and look at a bright light, like a flashlight. If the light is "extremely dim," or doesn't appear at all, the glasses are safe, Susannah Darling, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in an instructional video. Viewers should be able to see the filament of the lightbulb, not the glow surrounding the bulb.

With safety in mind, there are ways to get free solar eclipse glasses .

The online eye retailer Warby Parker is offering members of the public a pair of ISO-certified glasses starting Monday. Warby Parker retail locations nationwide, find one  here.

But there are plenty of other retailers giving out free glasses that range from Smoothie King to the protein bar Perfect Snacks, which will give out glasses alongside a chocolate brownie flavor.

The most wonderful time of the golf season continues into Sunday as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club. The 2024 Masters is a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world. Scottie Scheffler entered as the favorite and remains that way, once again standing as the leader by a single stroke through 54 holes.

While five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods set a new record at Augusta National  by making the weekend in his 24th consecutive playing of the tournament, he completely ejected on Saturday by posting a 10-over 82, his worst score in a major championship round throughout his professional career. Woods registered consecutive double bogeys on the 7th and 8th and had two separate four-hole stretches scoring bogey or worse. This after Tiger made 22 fairways through his first 36 holes, his best such mark since 1999.

Collin Morikawa posted one of the low rounds of Saturday to jump one stroke back of Scheffler. Max Homa held serve, for the most part, as he struggled around Augusta National but nevertheless posted a 73. Bryson DeChambeau fell off a bit, but an electric birdie on the last Saturday moved him to four shots back of Scheffler with 18 holes remaining.

While attending the Masters is a dream for many, simply being able to watch golf on the grandest stage of them all is an incredible treat each year, and we here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the Masters throughout this week.

IPOH: A 44-year-old tour guide was killed after a rock fell on his head at a popular tourist spot in Taman Saikat here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the victim, who was bringing a group of tourists from Vietnam to visit the city, died on the spot at about 11.30am on Monday (April 8).

"A postmortem conducted at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital corroborates the cause of death and there was no foul play.

"The case has been classified as sudden death," he said in a statement.

"The police welcome the cooperation of the people who may have information on the incident to contact the district police control centre at 05-254 2222 to assist with the investigation," he added.

8 Norwegian Cruise Passengers Stranded on African Island Catch Up to Ship After Traversing 7 Countries

• The group was on a guided excursion that got delayed, leading them to miss the ship’s "all aboard" call 
• A statement from Norwegian Cruise Lines noted that all guests are responsible for returning to the docked ship at the designated call time 
• Eight people were able to catch up to the ship on Tuesday morning after reportedly traversing seven countries.
• One, who had fallen ill before the incident, has safely returned to the U.S.

Multiple passengers were stranded on an island in Africa after their Norwegian Cruise Line ship reportedly left them behind. After several days of uncertainty and a trek across seven countries, they're now back on board the vessel.

On Wednesday, March 27, South Carolina couple Jill and Jay Campbell were enjoying a guided tour on the island of São Tomé and Príncipe located off the continent's western coast, ABC15 News reported at the time. The pair was with six other American and Australian passengers when they realized they wouldn’t make it back to the ship on time due to their tour taking longer than planned.

Though the tour operator contacted the cruise ship’s captain to inform them of the delay, the captain refused to let them back on the still-anchored ship when they arrived at the port because it was after the "all aboard" call, per the outlet. 

The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard allegedly then took them by boat directly to the ship where the captain again did not permit them to board. 

The group later encountered another stranded passenger, an 80-year-old woman, who was hospitalized on the island after a cruise line tour, the outlet stated. The woman reportedly experienced memory and vision loss due to a medical emergency. 

In addition to the ill passenger, the group also includes one person who is pregnant, one with a heart condition and four elderly travelers. 

The majority of the group left their medications and credit cards on the ship except for the Campbells, who have reportedly paid over $5,000 for food, accommodations, and other necessities for their fellow passengers. 

On Sunday, the U.S. Embassy in Angola allegedly arranged for the group to fly to the West African country of Gambia, the ship's next planned port of call, so they could reboard.

Unfortunately, the group discovered the cruise ship wasn’t docked at the port in Gambia as planned because it had to spend another day at sea due to low tides. ABC News 4 reports the passengers spent fifteen hours traveling through six countries to make it to the port on Sunday. 

“We have to cross the ferry to get into Senegal,” Campbell told the outlet on Monday, marking their seventh country. “We just learned from the gentleman that the ferry hadn’t been working, but he said no problem, if the ferry is not working we will get another little boat and then pick up a car on the other side. And then once we get on the other side of Senegal, it’s another four-hour drive.” 

In a statement to PEOPLE, Norwegian Cruise Line said, “On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

The statement continued, “While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.”

The cruise line added that guests are “responsible for any necessary travel arrangements” to meet the ship at the next port and that they had each of their passports “delivered to the local port agents to retrieve” when they missed their all aboard call.

The group was finally able to catch up to the vessel. They reached Dakar, Senegal, its next port, on Monday night, PEOPLE confirmed.

After what they'd been through, Jill told NBC News in a story published on Tuesday, "We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us." While she allowed that Norwegian technically followed protocol, she says, "I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority."

On Tuesday morning, the eight passengers, less the person who had fallen ill and later safely returned home to the United States, chose to board the cruise. Norwegian confirmed the news to PEOPLE in a statement.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal. We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available,"

The Norwegian Dawn departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day trip that will end in Barcelona on April 10.

Where to watch Masters in the US

There are a few US-based watch options, which vary depending on the day. The cheapest version is the free live stream offered through the Masters website , which should show most of the tournament. This will be where you want to tune in for morning coverage around 8 a.m., including streams of the Amen Corner and no.'s 4, 5, 6, 15, and 16. According to the website's listing , the afternoon coverage we lay out below will be simulcast on the Masters website. CBS Sports and ESPN+ (starting at $10.99 a month) should also have morning coverage if you'd prefer to go that route.

Rounds 1 and 2 coverage will also air on ESPN on Thursday and Friday afternoon. Rounds 3 and 4 will also be available on CBS on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. ESPN and CBS coverage will run from 3-7 p.m. ET on most days (Sunday's final round will begin at 2 p.m. ET).
