6D5N Hong Kong Itinerary for the Young Muslim Traveller — Hidden Gems, Local Halal Food and Quintessential Attractions

hong kong muslim travel

Hong Kong said Nei hou and I answered Waalaikumusalam .

girl in a hijab looking out at victoria harbour - hong kong itinerary

I visited Hong Kong once in 2015 and all I remember from the itinerary was Halal Dim Sum from Islamic Canteen, The Peak and Hong Kong Disneyland — obviously.

I enjoyed myself on that trip but I knew Hong Kong had much more to offer.

hong kong muslim travel

Now that I’m a little older (and a little bit more aware of my surroundings), I returned to Hong Kong with the intention to uncover their alternative side all while keepin’ it Halal 💯 We explored the artsy aspects of Hong Kong, found prayer areas throughout the city and chilled at Insta-worthy Muslim-friendly cafes!

If you’re Muslim and looking to explore the Muslim-friendly sides of Hong Kong, here’s our six-day itinerary covering where to eat, where to pray and where to play.

Day 1:   Central  |  Day 2: Hong Kong Disneyland  |  Day 3:   Causeway Bay  |  Day 4: Ocean Park |  Day 5: Kowloon  |  Day 6: Tai O Fishing Village

Day 0: Arriving in Hong Kong

Octopus Card and SIM card - hong kong itinerary

Transport: Public transport is affordable and well-connected in Hong Kong. Pro-tip: Get this bundle via Klook , which includes an Octopus Card preloaded with HK$150 (~S$25.50) and a Hong Kong 4G SIM Card for eight days.

Hong Kong Goodies: As a welcome gift, travellers staying in Hong Kong for 90 days or less are eligible for Hong Kong Goodies (worth HK$100, ~S$17)! Choose from over a million vouchers including free welcome drinks at bars, cash vouchers for restaurants, shops or attractions, or exclusive gifts from attractions or museums.

Check into InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong

a king sized bed in the intercontinental grand stanford hotel - hong kong itinerary

Home for the week was at InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong . It’s pricey but being less than a 15-minute walk from three MTR stations (Tsim Sha Tsui, East Tsim Sha Tsui & Hung Hom Station) and Chunking Mansions (an area with a lot of Halal food) made it worth the splurge.

Their willingness to accommodate our Halal dietary requirements for the breakfast buffet was a plus! They differentiated Halal dishes with different coloured tags and placed reminders to only use designated utensils for Halal items.

*Note: Send your dietary requirements in advance to the hotel’s Reservations Department via [email protected] to ensure ample lead time for arrangements to be made.

vegetarian lasagne with salad and a lemon tart for halal in room dining in intercontinental grand stanford - hong kong itinerary

It was late when we checked-in, so we opted for in-room dining for dinner!

The Halal In-Room Dining menu has an extensive range of Asian and Western dishes so I chose the vegetarian Oven-baked Lasagna with Prawn and Avocado Salad. I loved the creaminess of the béchamel (white sauce) in the lasagna and the spicy tangy kick from the salad dressing.

After the very filling meal, I had a good night’s rest in their comfy bed and spacious room.

Fun fact: There’s a pillow menu to choose from if the fluffy standard pillows aren’t to your liking 😉.

Cost: From S$265 (~HK$1,557)/night Address: 70號 Mody Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

Day 1: Appreciate Central’s Contrasting Landscapes

jubilee street in central - hong kong itinerary

Located on Hong Kong Island, Central is a blend of the old and new with historical architecture and towering skyscrapers.

Guided Central Street Art Tour

wall art mural during central street art tour - hong kong itinerary

Starting our Hong Kong adventure with a street art tour, our guide Alexandra from Wanderlust Walks introduced us to works around Central.

Our tour started from Lower Lascar Road and by the time we ended at Shing Wong Street, I had a new appreciation for street art.

We saw works from local Hong Kong artists like Mooncasket — best known for her colourful quirky creatures inspired by retro cartoons — and international artists like Invader — French street artist known for ceramic tile mosaics of pixelated art from 8-bit video games like Space Invaders!

a mural of chickens by Ceet - hong kong itinerary

This mural by Ceet features his signature Chicanos!

Having Alexandra explain the artists’ processes of the murals and graffiti made me more invested in the pieces.

A striking story was about how an Algerian artist Ceet began his artistic journey — he had difficulty communicating in restaurants overseas so he started drawing his orders!

Guided Street Art Tour Cost: From HK$2,000 (~S$340.50 for 1 – 3 pax, cost remains the same even if only 1 pax, extra HK$300 (~S$51) for each additional participant above 3pax) Tour timings: Anytime between 10AM – 4PM, depending on the tour Meeting point: Varies depending on the tour

Free Alternative: Art Lane

Art Lane - hong kong itinerary

Alternatively, if you prefer a free and easy art walk, head to Art Lane .

Ki Ling Lane and Chung Ching Street are fully painted from wall to wall with bright and fun murals by both local and international artists. There’s even art on the stairs!

The ‘Rainbow Staircase’ is what you’ll usually see when Google-ing Art Lane but be sure to check out ‘Music Town’ by local Hong Kong artist Zue Chan too! The piece is inspired by Vienna’s vibrant local shops and it leads to another section of Art Lane!

*Pro-tip: Visit on weekday afternoons for fewer crowds or at night to see the lane lit by fairy lights!

Opening hours: 24hrs How to get there: Sai Ying Pun MTR station Exit B3

Muslim-friendly offerings around Hollywood Road

shops along hollywood road in central - hong kong itinerary

Both street art options are in the central area which is a great opportunity to explore Hollywood Road after the tour. This historical road is lined with vintage shops, cafes, art galleries, and several Halal food spots!

Our lunch stop was an Indian food buffet at Jashan Celebrating Indian Cuisine .

a plate of food from Jashan restaurant - halal food options in Hong Kong

I loved the cosy ambience and how we could sample what seemed like every North Indian curry in one place 🤭

Jashan Celebrating Indian Cuisine Cost: From HK$148/pax (~S$24) Opening hours: 12PM – 2:30 PM, 5:45PM – 10PM Address: 1/f, Amber Lodge, 23 Hollywood Rd, Central, Hong Kong

If you prefer a quick takeaway of burgers, kebabs, and rice bowls instead, check out Cheeky Buns !

a green Jamia mosque in central - prayer facilities in Hong Kong

We then walked 10 minutes to Jamia Mosque for our afternoon prayers. This mint-green mosque is the oldest mosque in Hong Kong and has recently been considered a historical monument of the city!

*Note: Toilets here are equipped with ablution areas and bidets.

Jamia Mosque Opening hours: 6AM – 7PM (depending on prayer times) Address: 30 Shelley St, Mid-Levels, Hong Kong

Central Market & Central Mid-levels Escalator

lanterns hanging from the ceiling of central market - hong kong itinerary

Central Market was the city’s first wet market and it operated as such till 2003. It’s now an aesthetically pleasing hip spot with small local shops, international food, and…AIRCON. It was a cooling break from the hot summer weather during our visit.

hong kong muslim travel

While food options were mostly located on the ground floor, Level 1 and 2 were filled with small locally designed items and uniquely Hong Kong trinkets like the iconic ‘Black & White’ cha chaan teng teacup.

There was a lot to explore so we took our time browsing (and taking plenty of OOTDs 🤭).

Central Market Opening hours: 10AM – 10PM Address: 93 Queen’s Road Central, Central, Hong Kong

After that, we exited at Level 2 for the Central Mid-levels Escalator — the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world and a recurring film location in Wong Kar-wai’s Chunking Express !

Central Mid-levels Escalator Opening hours: 6AM – 12AM Address: Jubilee St, Central, Hong Kong

Central Pier & Central and Western District Promenade

tourist buses in front of central pier - hong kong itinerary

Central Pier is not just a scenic viewpoint of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong’s skyline — it’s a functioning ferry terminal that connects Hong Kong Island with Kowloon and the outlying islands!

a muslim girl posing with the double ducks at central pier - hong kong itinerary

Surrounded by notable landmarks like the International Finance Centre (IFC) , walking along the promenade emphasised Hong Kong’s opulence.

Fun fact: The IFC is the second tallest building in Hong Kong — the International Commerce Centre (ICC) is the tallest!

During our visit, we also got to see DOUBLE DUCKS floating on Victoria Harbour 😆🦆 Known for his large public art installations, Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman brought the ‘Rubber Duck’ to Hong Kong back in 2013 and other cities like Seoul and Los Angeles.

a singular duck on the harbour - hong kong itinerary

Now 10 years later, it returns with a friend because, as Hofman says, “Double duck is double luck”. Pictured above is a single duck because his friend deflated from the heat. #relatable

Even though the ducks departed from the harbour on 18 June 2023, we hope we don’t have to wait another 10 years for their return 🤭!

*Pro-tip: Catch a sunset ferry ride (from HK$4, ~S$0.70) to Kowloon or Tsim Sha Tsui for bougie vibes.

Opening hours: 24hrs Address: Central, Hong Kong

Day 2: Spend a day in the happiest place on earth — Hong Kong Disneyland!

a girl in a hijab posing outside hong kong disneyland - Muslim-friendly attractions in Hong Kong

A Hong Kong itinerary isn’t complete without stopping by the happiest place on earth — but a few things have changed in Hong Kong Disneyland since my 2015 visit: – The park is closed on some days so refer to  Park Calendar when planning your visit – Reservations (up to 90 days in advance) are required before your visit

New Marvel attractions have opened in Tomorrowland too! We rode the 3D motion simulator Iron Man Experience and the kid-friendly Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle — which was a good respite from more intense rides like Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars.

Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars is my favourite ride!

Our adventure ended with “Momentous” Nighttime Spectacular — Hong Kong Disneyland’s nighttime fireworks and LED projections show at the Castle of Magical Dreams. I can’t confirm or deny that tears were shed during the show.

*Pro-tip: Take your time to explore the park and save ~S$25.70 with the 2-Day Fun Special Package ! Plus, get extra perks like merchandise vouchers worth HK$10 (~S$1.70) and a Buy-1-Get-1-Free Popcorn Scoop voucher!

Halal food at Tahitian Terrace

Halal status: Halal-certified by The Incorporated Trustees of The Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong

For now, Tahitian Terrace in Adventureland is the only Halal-certified restaurant in Disneyland. Choose from a selection of Southeast Asian food — we tried the Seafood Laksa (HK$130, ~S$22).

a bowl of seafood laksa served in tahitian terrace - Muslim-friendly attractions in Hong Kong

It’s a steep price for a vermicelli noodle Laksa but considering you get a fair bit of ingredients, I think it’s fairly priced for Halal amusement park food.

Cost: From HK$130 (~S$22.50) Opening hours: 11AM – 8:30PM How to get there: Head to Adventureland

Mystic Point ‘Quiet Room’

Other than Halal food, Hong Kong Disneyland’s Muslim-friendly spaces also include their Quiet Room at Mystic Point. It’s a room for anyone who needs a quiet space — even those who wish to do their prayers! The room isn’t segregated by gender but the ablution area has a privacy curtain.

*Note: It’s best to bring your own prayer mats and garments but you can also request to borrow a mat from Guests Relations at Main Street!

How to get there: Head to the toilets at Mystic Point

Day 3: Live Like a Bougie Local

Compact with tall skyscrapers, luxury hotels and shopping malls, Hong Kong Island is known for its upscale vibe.

Dim Sum brunch at Islamic Centre Canteen

Halal status: Halal-certified by the Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong

a spread of halal and authentic dim sum at islamic canteen - Halal food options in Hong Kong

What’s a trip to Hong Kong without trying the local Halal Cantonese food?

The dim sum at Islamic Centre Canteen was my gateway to appreciating authentic Chinese food back in 2015 when I was 15 and still very new to diverse flavours. I distinctly remember how my family loved it so much that we ordered some to-go for snackies at The Peak.

a girl in a hijab enjoying a pan fried chicken bun and halal dim sum - Halal dining experiences in Hong Kong

This restaurant has stood the test of time and is just as delectable in 2023. They serve zi char style dishes like Braised Fish Fillet but we went straight for the dim sum — a lot of it. My favourites were the Pan Fried Chicken Bun, Crispy Deep-Fried Chicken Chinese Style, and Steamed Butter Egg Cake.

Cost: From HK$18/basket (~S$3) Opening hours: 10AM – 8PM (visit before 3PM as their dim sum sells out fast!) Address: 40 Salvation Army Street, Wan Chai 5/F, Masjid Ammar And Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre, Hong Kong

Arte M Projections - hong kong itinerary

Arte M is an immersive media exhibition of LED Light Projections showcasing selected highlights from d’strict ARTE MUSEUM in Korea. Their theme ‘ETERNAL NATURE’ features seven rooms with different projections.

Some rooms had their walls and floors fully covered in light projections. AURORA BEACH had luminous aurora waves coming up and out from the walls and floor while FLOWER CAMELLIA had floor-to-ceiling blooming flowers.

WHALE was a unique piece for me as it appeared to be a projection of random waves at first but was actually a whale made out of water!

Entrance fee: From HK$88/pax (~S$15.20) Opening hours: 11AM – 7PM (opens 10AM on Sat, Sun & Public Hols.) Address: 2F, K11 HACC, K11 ATELIER King’s Road, Hong Kong

Causeway Bay

walking through causeway bay - Exploring Hong Kong as a Muslim traveller

I always have time for shopping in my itinerary — especially in Hong Kong.

High-end boutiques, trendy fashion outlets, and entertainment options surround all corners in Causeway Bay . This vibrant district is a shopper’s paradise for anyone looking to splurge 💅

But if you’re a broke creature of habit like me — you can always count on a Uniqlo or Muji for a reasonably priced shopping spree.

How to get there: Take the Shau Kei Wan – Kennedy Town tram to Jupiter Street or the MTR Island Line to Fortress Hill Station and walk 5mins.

Dinner at JAJA, a vegetarian-friendly cafe

Halal status: Vegetarian, alcohol is served

seating in JAJA vegetarian restaurant and cafe - hong kong itinerary

I thought I stepped into a Barbie movie when I entered JAJA’s elaborately pink cafe.

Pink walls, pink flowers, and the Vegas-style sign screamed glitz and glamour. The elaborately-made pastel-coloured drinks and desserts added to the ostentatious vibe. But maximalist décor aside, the food was actually really good!

vegetarian sushi and corn ribsin JAJA vegetarian restaurant - hong kong itinerary

The dishes that stood out to me the most were the Smokey Corn Ribs (HK$99, ~S$17) and the Living Maki Platter (HK$328, ~S$55.80). They were so well seasoned and flavourful that my carnivorous self was totally okay with it being 100% vegetarian.

Cost: From HK$99 (~S$17) Opening hours: 11:30AM – 10PM Address: 6/F, Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Day 4: Get up close with animals at Ocean Park Hong Kong

a girl posing with whiskers in front of ocean park - Muslim-friendly attractions in Hong Kong

I’ve always been intrigued by the concept of rollercoasters and animal exhibits all in one place. But beyond the fun to be had, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Ocean Park Hong Kong also has a commitment to marine conservation!

I appreciated how the exhibits and shows in the park were educational and how they promoted awareness and understanding of both marine life and wildlife.

Opportunities to get up close with the park animals were also plenty — I got to feed the penguins !

hair raiser rollercoaster in ocean park - muslim friendly attractions in hong kong

The rollercoasters were pretty solid too! We went on Hair Raiser — a floorless high-speed coaster with inversions, loops, and drops. It was intense and my hair was indeed, RAISED.

Entrance fee: HK$498/pax (~S$86.10) Opening hours: 10AM – 7:30PM (check park schedule for operating days) Address: Aberdeen, Hong Kong

Halal Food at Clown Corner

rice and noodle dishes in ocean park - Halal food options in Hong Kong

We were happy to see that Ocean Park Hong Kong had many Halal Asian food options like Café Ocean — where you can dine with a Seaview — and Panda Café Food To Go.

We wanted to stay close to park rides so we dined at Clown Corner at Thrill Mountain, and really enjoyed the hearty Yunnan Rice Vermicelli in Soup with Beef Brisket. The soup was mildly herbal with tender chunks of beef.

Cost: From HK$70 (~S$12) Opening hours: 10AM – 7:30PM

Prayer Room at Guest Relations

Ocean Park’s prayer rooms are located at Guest Relations — one at the main entrance and another at The Summit near Rev Booster. It’s best to use the former room as it’s always open and equipped with staff who’s ready to assist.

*Note: Bring your own prayer garments and mats and take your ablution at the nearby toilets.

Day 5: Explore West Kowloon’s Artsy Offerings

a large mural commissioned by m+ museum - hong kong itinerary

In recent years, West Kowloon Cultural District has become Hong Kong’s arts and cultural quarter to encourage experimentation and creation among local and international artists.

Our itinerary for the day involved exploring the district’s arts scene, architecture and local Hong Kong snacks!

Inside the mirror room of Yayoi Kusama: Dots Obsession—Aspiring to Heaven’s Love !

As someone who mostly consumes Western art and media, walking through M+ ‘s Asian 20th and 21st-century visual culture collection was refreshing!

We visited Things, Spaces, Interactions — an exhibition about Asian design and architecture. What caught my eye were the hyperreal airbrush posters from the 70s and 80s in the postmodern design era.

Even though the three posters were created by different artists — Cahyono Abdi from Jakarta, Yamaguchi Harumi from Tokyo and Alan Chan from Hong Kong — it was interesting to see how all three similarly depicted women as confident, glamourous and superhuman.

Xiqu Centre

Xiqu Centre - hong kong itinerary

Made up of over 10,000 curved metal fins, you wouldn’t think this modern building is a Cantonese opera house and Chinese traditional theatre.

Xiqu Centre’s mesmerising architecture makes every inch of the space an IG-worthy stop in our Hong Kong itinerary. Shows and performances usually happen from Thursdays to Sundays but you don’t need to catch a Chinese opera to enjoy the space — the public area is free for anyone to hang out!

We managed to visit public exhibitions about the history of performing arts in Hong Kong before chilling on the atrium’s large seating steps — while sipping on bubble tea of course.

Entrance fee:  Free Opening hours:   10AM – 10:30PM How to get there:   Austin Station Exit E

Imperial Patisserie

imperial patisserie storefront - Muslim travel tips for Hong Kong

For a unique take on souvenirs, head to Imperial Patisserie . They have several outlets throughout the city (e.g. in Central Market) and it’s the only fully halal pastry shop selling Michelin-level Hong Kong pastries like egg rolls and moon cakes.

If you’re unsure of what to buy, get the Palmiers. Imperial Patisserie spent years perfecting its Palmier recipe so you know you’re getting a quality product.

palmier souvenir snacks from imperial patiserie - Halal food options in Hong Kong

The Original Palmiers are a buttery and crispy treat — but the Eight Flavours Assorted Palmiers Gift Box (HK$308, ~S$52.40) lets you try other bold flavours like Five Grain and Chilli (made with five types of chilli 🥵).

*Pro-tip: Less than a minute’s walk away is Kowloon Mosque — the biggest mosque in Hong Kong!

Cost: From HK$138 (~S$23.90) Opening hours: 10:30 AM – 9:30PM Address: Shop 5, G/F, Haiphong Mansion, 53-55 Haiphong Road, Tsim Sha Tsui ( and other outlets )

Day 6: A relaxing day trip at Tai O Fishing Village

Tai O Stilt Houses - hong kong itinerary

On our last day, we escaped the city and took a day trip out to the serene Tai O Fishing Village ! Located on Lantau Island, this former fishing settlement is a preservation of Hong Kong’s traditional fishing culture.

Boat ride in Tai O fishing village - Exploring Hong Kong as a Muslim traveller

We hopped on a scenic boat ride (HK$30, ~S$5.10/pax) to see traditional houses on stilts and pink dolphins — we didn’t see any 🙃.

From the mom-and-pop shrimp paste shops to low-rise metal houses, this pedestrian-friendly village was a stark difference compared to Hong Kong’s metropolis. Tai O is mainly a place to unwind and enjoy the sights so a half day is sufficient to appreciate the island.

Ferry timings:  First ferry departs Tung Chung at 7:30AM, last ferry leaves Tai O at 6:30PM How to get there:  Take bus 11 from Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus, or ferry from Tung Chung New Development Pier

Vegetarian-friendly desserts in Ching Kee

Ching Kee Desserts Tai O - hong kong itinerary

After an afternoon of walking in the heat, Ching Kee’s local desserts were perfect for cooling us down. We tried their tasty ginger milk pudding, and creamy beancurd and mango ice cream pudding — a very interesting combination!

Do note that they serve meat items as well so dine at your own discretion.

While there are plenty of seafood eateries in the village — it’s best to pack snacks before heading to Tai O as we didn’t come across any Halal food places.

Ching Kee Opening hours: 11:30AM – 8PM (12PM – 9PM on Mon) Address: 82 Kat Hing St, Tai O, Hong Kong

Direct Flight from Singapore to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific Airways

a singaporean passport in front of cathay pacific's in-flight entertinement - hong kong itinerary

Cathay Pacific has several daily flight timings to choose from and comfortable seats with ample legroom!

The 4-hour ride was a pleasant one with its comfortable seats and ample legroom. What took me by surprise is the extensive list of titles in their in-flight entertainment system! They had a suite of recent titles from HBO Max and A24 so it’s no wonder it’s said to be the largest entertainment library in Asia Pacific.

Steamed pumpkin with a meat curry and vegetables .

The Halal meals too were tasty, thoughtful, and creative — I got the steamed fish with couscous (North African dish of small steamed granules of rolled semolina) on the flight back!

*Pro-tip: Make a Halal meal request at least 24 hours before your flight on the ‘Manage Booking’ page for a doubt-free inflight meal.

Fun fact: All meals on Cathay Pacific flights to and from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia and the Middle East are Halal!

Navigating Hong Kong as a Muslim

a girl in a hijab looking out at the central mid levels escalators - Exploring Hong Kong as a Muslim traveller

As someone who obviously doesn’t look East Asian, I can get away with not knowing Cantonese as locals would always accommodate and speak English.

But part of the joy of travelling is attempting the local language. Here are some phrases I found useful:

Hong Kong is vibrant on all fronts. From Muslim-friendly food to creative spaces, it was exciting to revisit the places from my previous Hong Kong itinerary, as well as discover new spots.

We hope this Muslim-friendly Hong Kong itinerary inspires you to book a flight to The Pearl of the Orient soon!

A halal guide to Hong Kong

Muslim citizens and visitors

Hong Kong’s efforts to accommodate Muslim citizens and visitors alike has resulted in a city that now proudly possesses six mosques, 62 halal-certified restaurants and food outlets, and the only Disneyland in the world with halal options. If you’re travelling to or from Hong Kong on a Cathay Pacific flight, halal food options are available, while HKIA itself provides two prayer rooms complete with ablution facilities, as well as a Popeye’s restaurant with halal items on the menu.

Try halal dim sum at the Islamic Centre Canteen

Halal Chinese cuisine

Muslims in the know head straight to the Islamic Centre Canteen for its delicious dim sum. Famed as the only halal Cantonese food in Hong Kong, it serves up tasty and affordable beef, chicken and seafood dumplings. At Ma’s , a Chinese restaurant with the best veal goulash pastry in town, Mr. Ma and his family serve up juicy meat dishes – including a particularly good lamb roll – that pack a flavoursome punch. Eating roast duck is an essential part of any Hong Kong itinerary so it's good news that halal eatery  Wai Kee  exists to provide Muslim visitors with this local staple. Arrive hungry because your plate will soon be heaped high with its renowned roast duck, resplendent in its beautifully golden skin. For curry lovers, there are scrumptious lamb, beef and chicken options on offer.

tick

Malaysian and more South East Asian cuisine

While the majority of Hong Kong’s halal restaurants tend to be Indian or Middle Eastern, the smartly decorated Spice in Tsim Sha Tsui offers a pan-Asian menu that includes fresh, spicy dishes taken from Malaysian, Thai and Indian cuisines. At Syed Bukhara in Kowloon, local Malaysian dishes and Singaporean dishes are served in a casual atmosphere at wallet-friendly prices. Order the nasi lemak, a Malaysian breakfast speciality where fragrant rice is adorned with spicy sambal, deep-fried anchovies, fried peanuts and boiled eggs. Or you can follow the lead of traveling Indonesians who flock to Warung Malay in Causeway Bay for an authentic taste of home. A huge variety of filling Indonesian dishes are on display behind the counter of this popular cafe, from the rice-based nasi goreng to chicken satay with peanut sauce.

Hong Kong has a number of fantastic Indian restaurants

Best places for an Indian feast

At Aladin Mess , finger-licking halal Indian food – think tikka meats, vegetarian curries and a full tandoori leg of lamb – is served in a small, perennially popular restaurant in the midst of bustling Causeway Bay. The cozy Shaffi’s opened in 1972 and first served curries to the British military; these days, its wide selection of meat and vegetarian curries draws an appreciative crowd who will queue for their supper. At JoJo Indian Cuisine , another stalwart on the scene since the ‘80s, all the usual treats are on offer, as well as a wide selection of indulgent Indian desserts. Save room for the cottage cheese dumplings. Got money to burn? Head to Bombay Dreams , an acclaimed restaurant with superb food. For lunchtime diners, the buffet option is great value for money.

Roast duck, a popular Cantonese dish

Middle Eastern and Mediterranean

At Sumac , an atmospheric Lebanese restaurant with classic French windows and rustic furnishings, patrons can enjoy al fresco dining on its outdoor terrace. The Mediterranean menu includes mezze staples like hummus and labneh, juicy chunks of grilled meats and seafood, and fresh fattoush salad with toasted pita bread and tangy citrus dressing. If you head to Lantau Island for the day, swing by Bahce Turkish restaurant for tasty mezze and chicken and beef kebabs served with a side of bread to mop it all up. Or there’s Kowloon-based 1453 Ottoman , which prides itself on fantastic doner kebabs, Turkish-style pide and cheese rolls stuffed with feta and parsley.

Hong Kong theme park

Theme parks

The kids will go crazy at Hong Kong’s Disneyland Resort , a spectacular theme park that melds traditional elements of Chinese culture with all the expected Disney-centric attractions. Better yet, the park sells halal-certified food at three of its on-site restaurants, as well as offering halal dishes on its room service menu at the Disneyland Hotel. Theme park aficionados should also devote a day to Ocean Park , an amusement park with a marine angle. Educational sea life exhibits sit alongside thrilling rides and the world’s largest aquarium dome. When you’re hungry, choose from a selection of dishes at two halal-friendly eateries.

Hong Kong’s mosques

Home to approximately 250,000 Muslims, Hong Kong boasts five mosques dotted around the city. The oldest, Jamia Mosque, was first built in the 1840s and can be found on Hong Kong Island. Kowloon Mosque – which can accommodate 3,500 worshippers at once – is a grand structure that reflects the unique identity of Muslims in Hong Kong while Ammar Mosque was designed by a Chinese Muslim and includes a halal bakery, medical services, classrooms and library. Chan Wan Mosque is a small worship space, but it’s luxuriously fitted in white marble, and Ibrahim Mosque – completed in 2013 – is the city’s newest addition.

Tsim Sha Tsui

Visit Tsim Sha Tsui

The neighbourhood of Tsim Sha Tsui also goes by another name: Paradise of Shoppers. Browse this heavily built-up area bursting with shopping malls, restaurants and bright lights before ending up at the Avenue of Stars promenade, which boasts a star-studded walkway honouring local celebrities. The Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre are a short walk away, as are a number of halal-certified restaurants, including The Great Indian Kebab Factory and the more affordable Ebeneezer’s Kebab & Pizzeria (both non-Muslim but 100% halal).

Causeway is an ideal base for the Muslim traveler

Halal-friendly hotels

The Butterfly on Morrison brings modern amenities and sleek style to the heart of Causeway. Within walking distance of Ammar Mosque (which has a halal canteen of its own), the hotel’s central location sits close to a wide range of Indian and Middle Eastern eateries. The four-star Kowloon Hotel is another comfortable option, ideally located near an abundance of shops, markets and halal-certified restaurants.

Ammar Mosque and Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre – simply known as Wan Chai Mosque – is one of the biggest mosques in Hong Kong. The Islamic Centre got its name from the mosque’s designer, Ramju Sadick, who is a Chinese Muslim. Besides being a place of prayer, this eight-story complex also houses an Islamic Centre, a canteen and a library. This mosque is definitely a must when visiting Wan Chai!

See Hong Kong’s History at The Blue House Cluster

hong kong muslim travel

When you stroll along Stone Nullah Lane, you simply cannot miss a cluster of colourful houses. The Blue House Cluster is made up of three interconnected buildings – the Blue House, the Yellow House, and the Orange House – which are aptly named after their vibrant-coloured exterior. Besides being the perfect spot for Instagram shots, these buildings also represent a piece of Hong Kong’s history.

hong kong muslim travel

The most significant of the three is the Blue House, which is one of the few remaining examples of a tong lau , a type of residential building with balconies as a notable feature. This architecture is popular in the 1920s – blended both Chinese and Western features. This well-preserved building was given the Award of Excellence in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2017, which is the highest level of its kind!

See Hong Kong’s Culture at Wan Chai Market

hong kong muslim travel

There’s no better place to experience the culture of a country than at a market. And out of all the markets in Hong Kong, Wan Chai Market is said to be one of the best. One part of the market is the wet market where you can get fresh produce and catch a glimpse of the locals’ way of life.

Another section of the market is called the Wan Chai Street Market. Also called “Wan Chai Toy Street”, the street market is the best place to get affordable souvenirs. From traditional Chinese toys to novelty trinkets, there is bound to be a perfect gift for your loved ones here.

See Hong Kong’s Skyline at Bowen Road

hong kong muslim travel

When seeking for the best view of Hong Kong’s stunning skyline, most tourists would flock to the famous Victoria Peak. You can avoid the crowds and get an alternative perspective of Hong Kong by hiking up Bowen Road. Imagine being surrounded by lush greenery while having a great view of densely-packed skyscrapers. You’re getting the best of both worlds!

Shop at star street precinct .

hong kong muslim travel

If Singapore has Haji Lane, Hong Kong has the Star Street Precinct. The Star Street Precinct – comprised of Star Street, Moon Street and Sun Street – is every millennial’s shopping paradise. The hip area is packed with quaint shops that sell a variety of unique items such as perfume, handicrafts and even coffee. The walls of the streets are also decorated with a kaleidoscope of murals that’ll be the perfect backdrop for your Instagram photos.

Chill at Sau Wah Fong

hong kong muslim travel

As the Star Street Precinct is gaining popularity, you may want to seek respite at Sau Wah Fong. Tucked away from the bustling neighbourhood, Sau Wah Fong is a quaint lane that offers both the old and new, as it is lined with charming cafes and old-school businesses. Take your time to window shop or have a chat with your friends over coffee. Sau Wah Fong is the place to take a breather from the fast-paced city.

Ride a tram through Wan Chai

hong kong muslim travel

Although the iconic trams in the picture above run throughout Hong Kong Island, the tramways within Wan Chai – especially along Hennessey Road, Lockhart Road and Jaffe Road – are some of the busiest. The trams are also best photographed in Wan Chai, as colourful buildings and flashing neon signs provide an excellent backdrop that embodies Hong Kong.

These trams are locally known as “Ding Ding” trams because of the unmistakable sound their horns make. Hop on a tram and hear it in action for yourselves! With over 100 years of history, these trams aren’t exactly the fastest mode of transportation. Nonetheless, it is an excellent way to immerse in history while having plenty of time to take in the sights and sounds of Wan Chai.

Take the Star Ferry from Wan Chai Pier

hong kong muslim travel

Did you know that there’s more than one way to experience Hong Kong’s skyline? Other than from the top, enjoy the views of Hong Kong from the water! Come on-board the Star Ferry at Wan Chai Pier and take a round trip to Tsim Sha Tsui. The best time to make the trip is during sunset as you get to catch the gorgeous golden hour and witness Hong Kong come to life at night as the lights are switched on.

With so many things to eat, see and do in this Muslim-friendly neighbourhood, wan day might not be enough to fully discover Wan Chai! From the old to the new, Wan Chai is without a doubt one of the best places to start your Hong Kong adventure.

Hong Kong Tourism Board has recently launched a microsite to provide more information and travel tips for Muslim travellers. 4D3N Muslim-Friendly Itinerary For Your Future Getaway To Hong Kong

avatar-name

Atiqah Mokhtar  •  May 20, 2020

No matter how many times we have been to Hong Kong, there’s always something to miss about this city! From the bustling streets and shopping malls to awesome theme parks and nature sights, a trip to Hong Kong (that’s just a 4-hour flight away!) is always totally worth it ? Our team here at HHWT have been fortunate enough to visit Hong Kong multiple times, and we’re definitely missing this amazing place. We bet you are too! So we’ve put together a 4D3N Muslim-friendly Hong Kong itinerary for repeat visitors so that you can go forth and continue exploring this city when it's safe to start travelling again.

Credit: Giphy

Get ready for an exciting trip, filled with some of the latest attractions Hong Kong has to offer ?

P.S. First-timer to Hong Kong? Check out our previous itinerary and Muslim-friendly guides for conquering the city!

Arrival in Hong Kong

  • Fly into Hong Kong International Airport - we usually recommend our readers to depart on the morning flight so you can arrive in Hong Kong by noon and have time to explore the city for the rest of the day ?
  • Scoot and Singapore Airlines fly direct from Singapore to Hong Kong, while AirAsia and Garuda fly direct from KL and Jakarta respectively. Cathay Pacific offers direct flights from all three cities to Hong Kong too!

Head to Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal (15 minutes)

  • Hong Kong Airport is located on Lantau Island, which also happens to be the largest island in Hong Kong! It’s home to attractions like Ngong Ping 360, the Big Buddha, and the Tai-O fishing village.
  • Since you’re already at Lantau Island, start your trip by exploring the attractions here before heading to the city ?

hong kong muslim travel

  • Begin your adventure by heading from the airport to the Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal. You can take a taxi for about HKD40 (it’s only a 5 – 10 minute drive to get there!). Alternatively, you can also take the bus (routes S1, S56, S64 and S64X) to the Tung Chung Bus Terminus, which is adjacent to the cable car terminal.

#HHWT Tip: Taxi drivers in Hong Kong typically speak only Cantonese. For a smoother trip, we recommend having the names and addresses of the places you’ll be visiting written in Chinese and saved in your phone or in a print-out, so you can show your taxi driver or other locals if you’re asking for directions.

  • You can store your luggage at the Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal for a fee of HKD100 per piece, with no advance booking required.

Ride the longest bi-cable ropeway in Asia (25 minutes)

hong kong muslim travel

  • Head to Ngong Ping (a highland area located on Lantau Island) via the scenic cable car ride that’s part of Ngong Ping 360!
  • This 25-minute cable car ride will let you enjoy incredible views of Lantau Island and the South China Sea.
  • For an extra thrilling experience, opt for the Crystal Cabin which has a glass bottom, allowing you to see all the way below! Crystal cabins cost around HKD50 extra than the Standard Cabin.

#HHWT Tip: Guests have the option of buying a 1+1 Round Trip ticket, where you get to go up to Ngong Ping on a Crystal Cabin and return to Tung Chung on the Standard Cabin! It’s also cheaper than buying the tickets separately too ?

hong kong muslim travel

  • Take the cable car up and across the Tung Chung Bay - you’ll pass through the first station, where the ropeway route then changes its angle 60 degrees.
  • The ride will take you up to the final stop at Ngong Ping Village, an area filled with shops, eateries and other attractions that’s also part of Ngong Ping 360.

hong kong muslim travel

  • As you approach the village you’ll see views of the island’s beautiful greenery, get your first sighting of the Big Buddha, and even see glimpses of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. This 55km bridge is one of the longest in the world and even features an undersea tunnel ?

Have lunch at Ebeneezer’s Kebab & Pizza (45 minutes)

hong kong muslim travel

  • Once you reach Ngong Ping Village, it’s time for lunch! Head to Ebeneezer’s Kebab & Pizza, a halal-certified chain of restaurants in Hong Kong serving up a mix of Indian, Middle-Eastern, and western dishes.

hong kong muslim travel

  • The outlet at Ngong Ping Village is located just a short walk away from the cable car terminal. On your way there, walk along the bridge that has the Blessing Drums - drums painted with auspicious and lucky words - and snap a quick photo!

hong kong muslim travel

  • We tried some of their naan which was nice and fluffy and made a great pairing with the chicken curry we ordered alongside. We also had their kebabs - we recommend adding on some of the delicious house sauces to complete your meal!

#HHWT Tip: Ebeneezer’s is halal-certified by The Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong . Please note that certified eateries may include those that serve alcoholic beverages, so long that the beverages are prepared and kept separately from the other F&B offerings, per The Incorporated Trustees’ halal certification guidelines.

Halal status: Halal-certified. Please note that alcoholic beverages are served here, but are prepared and kept separately (in line with The Incorporated Trustees’ halal certification guidelines)

Average price: HKD70-100

Opening hours: Mon-Fri; 10AM-6PM, Sat-Sun; 9AM-6.30PM

Address: Shop No. 9A, Ngong Ping Village, Ngong Ping, Lantau

See the majestic Tian Tan Buddha (1 hour)

  • After refuelling on the yummy food, you’re all set to explore!
  • Tian Tan Buddha (also known as the Big Buddha) is the second-largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha statue in the world. Measuring 34m in total (including the base), this 250-tonne statue is an impressive sight atop of Mount Muk Yue.

hong kong muslim travel

  • Walk through Ngong Ping Village towards the Tian Tan Buddha (you won’t be able to miss it!). It takes about 10 minutes to walk from Ngong Ping Village to the base of the Tian Tan Buddha.

hong kong muslim travel

  • For those wanting to get a closer look, you can climb up the 268 steps to get to the statue. You’ll also get a nice view!

Admire the Po Lin Monastery (30 minutes)

hong kong muslim travel

  • After seeing the Big Buddha, walk over to the Po Lin Monastery, a world-renowned Buddhist monastery that’s famous for eye-catching architectural elements and gardens.
  • Take your time to explore the grounds which comprise a few buildings including the Main Shrine Hall of Buddha, the Grand Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas and the Bell Tower. There’s a restaurant there that serves fully vegetarian food too.

Explore Ngong Ping Village (1.5 hours)

  • It’s time to make your way back to Ngong Ping Village, and now’s the perfect time to browse around the shops and attractions here!

hong kong muslim travel

  • Have some virtual fun at VR 360, a unique virtual reality experience that incorporates Hong Kong settings and landscapes.
  • There are several different VR games that you can try. We particularly liked the Time Shuttle game where we got to shoot at targets ? There was also a game that mimicked walking on a tightrope in the air, which definitely felt quite scary!

hong kong muslim travel

  • Right nearby, you’ll find Motion 360, a movie theatre experience that includes movement, wind, and water for a fully immersive experience! We really enjoyed the movie we watched which was called Discover Lantau. It simulated a ride all across Lantau Island - not only was it a fun experience, but a great way to learn more about the island too!

#HHWT Tip: VR 360 and Motion 360 are paid attractions, costing HKD168 and HKD88 respectively.

hong kong muslim travel

  • Ngong Ping Village constantly hosts different events and special exhibitions, so do be sure to check out what’s on while you visit! When we were there there were super cute We Bare Bears-related displays in celebration of Chinese New Year.
  • Don’t forget to drop by the gift and souvenir shops to browse for some fun souvenirs to bring home.

Ngong Ping 360

Admission fee: For ticket prices for the cable car ride, please refer here . Admission to Ngong Ping Village itself is free, however select attractions require payment ( find out more about the attractions here ).

Opening hours: Mon-Fri; 10AM-6PM; Sat-Sun; 9AM-6.30PM

Address: 111 Ngong Ping Road

Head back down to Tung Chung and check-in at your hotel

  • It’s time to head to your hotel! Take the cable car back down to Tung Chung Terminal and collect your luggage.

hong kong muslim travel

  • During our last trip to Hong Kong, we stayed at Pentahotel Hong Kong in Kowloon. It’s located about 10-minute walk from the Diamond Hill MTR station. We loved the stylish contemporary furnishings of our room, and best of all, the hotel has halal-certified options for dinner and breakfast!
  • For other budget-friendly accommodation options that are near halal food, check this list out !

Rate per night: From HKD491 on Agoda

Address: 19 Luk Hop Street, San Po Kong Kowloon

Have dinner at the hotel and get an early night’s rest

  • After a full day (including an early morning flight!), we’d understand if you just want to have dinner and get some rest. Luckily, Pentahotel helpfully has a halal-certified menu that you can order from! Choose from dishes such as Nasi Goreng, stir-fried noodles with beef, or spicy garlic lamb chops. Do request the halal menu from the restaurant staff.
  • The serving sizes were generous and will definitely fill you up! We enjoyed the milk tea too

Halal status: Halal-certified (do note that the hotel restaurant also serves non-halal food and beverages). Do request for the halal-certified menu, which is prepared separately in accordance to The Incorporated Trustees’ halal-certification guidelines.

Have breakfast at the hotel

hong kong muslim travel

  • You have a full day ahead of exploring, but first, fuel up with breakfast! Pentahotel conveniently has a halal-certified menu so you can eat right at the hotel ?
  • Breakfast is served at the hotel restaurant located on the first floor (next to the reception area).
  • The halal breakfast comprises select buffet items (including fruits, cereal, and salad) as well as hot menu items prepared upon order. Do indicate to the staff that you would like the halal menu when entering the restaurant, and they’ll provide you with a print-out of the menu as well as a pen, so you can mark your choices of dishes you would like prepared (you’ll need to hand the paper back to staff so they can inform the kitchen!).

hong kong muslim travel

  • The dishes included items like steamed buns, eggs, fried noodles, congee, and sautéed veggies. We recommend the fried noodles - the fried chicken with coconut rice (which is pretty much their version of Nasi Lemak) was quite good too!

Visit Graham Street morning market (45 minutes)

  • Explore Central Hong Kong to see a slice of local life, starting with visiting the Graham Street Morning Market! You can make your way to the Central or Sheung Wan MTR stations, and from there, stroll through the city to get to the market.

hong kong muslim travel

  • The Graham Street market makes for a fascinating insight into daily life in Hong Kong - this narrow alleyway climbs uphill and is filled on both sides with stalls selling fresh produce like fruits and vegetables. It’s a crowded place to manoeuvre, but certainly an interesting one!

hong kong muslim travel

  • As you walk the surrounding area, it’ll also be hard not to appreciate and snap photos of the architecture and landscape. The area is filled with older buildings and public housing that’s interspersed with taller, newer skyscrapers. You’ll also find stores selling traditional herbs and tonics sitting right next to upscale artisanal shops.

Learn more about Hong Kong’s heritage at Tai Kwun (1.5 hours)

  • After the market, walk along the alleyways in the area towards Tai Kwun, Hong Kong’s former Central Police Station that’s been converted into an arts and heritage centre.

hong kong muslim travel

#HHWT Tip: The Central area is very hilly, so one way to make it easier is to take the Mid-Levels Escalator. This is a collection of escalators, walkways and bridges designed to make traversing the steep hills more convenient. It’s also the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world!

  • Taking the Mid-Levels Escalator, head to Tai Kwun. There’s a footbridge that connects directly to Tai Kwun at the intersection of Hollywood Road and Old Bailey Street (it makes for a pretty photo spot too!)

hong kong muslim travel

  • Tai Kwun is made of a cluster of buildings. The open area in the Parade Ground (where you’ll first enter coming from the footbridge) is a great place to get a good view of the former Police Headquarters Block, Barrack Block, and Armoury which have all been beautifully restored.

hong kong muslim travel

  • Don’t forget to check out B Hall in the Prison Yard. Here, you’ll find a fascinating exhibition of what life was like as a prisoner at the station.
  • Tai Kwun hosts several ongoing art and cultural exhibitions, performances and workshops in and around the compound. In addition, they offer guided tours (including in English!). Check their website to see the current programmes when you visit!

Browse through vintage treasures at Cat Street

hong kong muslim travel

  • Just a short walk away from Tai Kwun, it’s time to look at antiques, curios, and other quirky finds at Cat Street market, which has been around since the 1920s!
  • While it’s called Cat Street, the market is actually located on a street called Upper Lascar Row. The name Cat Street came about because back in the early days, many of the goods sold at the market were reportedly stolen items. Because stolen goods are called rats in Cantonese, the people who buy them were in turn, cats!

hong kong muslim travel

  • At the market, you’ll find an assortment of stalls and shops selling everything from figurines to old records, magazines, ceramic ware, and more. We had a lot of fun looking through everything, and it can be a nice spot to look for a unique souvenir to bring home.

#HHWT Tip: If you’re looking to snap photos, do note that some vendors don’t permit photography. Look out for signs saying no photos allowed!

Have an Indian feast for lunch at Bombay Dreams

hong kong muslim travel

  • Getting hungry from all the walking? You’re in for a treat - a feast filled with biryani, roti, curries, tandoori and more awaits at Bombay Dreams! ?

#HHWT Tip: The restaurant is located on the fourth floor of the Carfield Building. Take the elevator up to get to the restaurant.

hong kong muslim travel

  • Bombay Dreams is an Indian restaurant that offers authentic Indian cuisine. It has an ala carte menu, but the eatery is very popular for its lunch buffet - the restaurant was packed while we were there, so it’s best to make reservations in advance.

hong kong muslim travel

  • We were lucky enough to get to enjoy the buffet, and while it’s somewhat pricier (HKD198 per person), the variety of yummy food available and the upscale ambience of the restaurant definitely made it worth it. We even got to see the tandoori and the naan bread being made right before us in open kitchens facing the dining area.

#HHWT Tip: Looking for a spot to perform your prayers after lunch? Jamia Mosque is a 10-minute walk away from Bombay Dreams!

Halal status: Halal-certified. Do note that alcoholic beverages are served here but prepared and kept separately (in-line with The Incorporated Trustees’ halal-certification guidelines).

Average price: Buffet lunch: HKD198++; Ala carte menu: HKD150-200 for mains

Opening hours: Open daily; Buffet lunch: 12PM-3PM, Dinner: 6PM-11PM

Address: 4/F, Carfield Building, 77 Wyndham Street, Central

Have a one-of-a-kind shopping mall experience at K11 Musea (2 hours)

  • Next up, we’re exploring Victoria Dockside! This recent development on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront has a collection of new buildings, one of them being K11 Musea, an upscale mall that’s unlike any other mall we’ve been to. To get there, head to Tsim Sha Tsui or East Tsim Sha Tsui MTR stations.
  • Entering K11 Musea, we were immediately taken by the beautiful details and furnishings of the mall. It’s definitely an Insta-worthy spot!

hong kong muslim travel

  • Head to the mall’s centre atrium, called the Opera Theatre, and look up to the stunning view! With the centrepiece called the Gold Ball (the spherical object on the right), the Opera Theatre is filled with carefully positioned lights and sloping fixtures that overall just looks incredible.
  • K11 Musea was designed with a unique concept: to be a cultural-retail hub that not only offers shops but integrates elements of art, culture and heritage. Each level of the mall has a specific theme, and as you explore the mall you’ll see art displays, temporary exhibits, and interactive stations according to the theme!

#HHWT Tip: This may seem silly, but believe us when we say that even visiting the washrooms at the mall was a super fun experience ? Make sure to check it out for yourself (the washrooms on each floor are different too!).

  • Every store at K11 Musea is truly unique in Hong Kong - as a requirement, all stores are either the flagship store for that brand in Hong Kong, the first outlet in the city or sell exclusive merchandise.

hong kong muslim travel

  • Some of the notable stores include the MOMA Design Store (the store associated with New York’s Museum of Modern Art that sells contemporary design products), the National Geographic store, and Fortnum and Masons (the first outlet outside of the UK!).

hong kong muslim travel

  • At this point in time, there are no halal-certified restaurants in the mall, but we definitely loved some of the artisanal coffee spots available! There’s an Arabica (the popular coffee brand from Kyoto) located at the mall, and we also tried Bloom’s Coffee. This cafe boasts a sleek, copper and gold-toned aesthetic, and the coffee was delicious ?

#HHWT Tip: Before you leave the mall, don’t forget to visit the Bohemian Garden located on the top floor! This open-air green space is a nice spot to chill while sipping your coffee or taking in the surroundings.

Opening hours: Open daily; 10AM-10PM

Address: Victoria Dockside, 18 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

Closest MTR stations: East Tsim Sha Tsui (take Exit J1 & J2); Tsim Sha Tsui (Exit E)

See the handprints of your favourite Hong Kong celebrities at Avenue of Stars (45 minutes)

  • K11 is located right by the Tsim Sha Tsui harborfront. You can walk from the mall right onto the waterfront promenade, and here you’ll find the Avenue of Stars, Hong Kong’s version of the Hollywood Walk Of Fame!

hong kong muslim travel

  • See the handprints of notable Hong Kong stars like Jet Li, Jackie Chan and more all along the railing by the waterfront. You’ll get a great view of the harbour and Hong Kong Island too!

hong kong muslim travel

  • Walk to nearby Salisbury Garden, where you’ll find a bronze statue of one of Hong Kong’s most beloved actors of all time, Bruce Lee.

Admire the sunset views from West Kowloon Art Park (1 hour)

hong kong muslim travel

  • Have a nice evening stroll and see some amazing sunset views at West Kowloon Art Park!
  • This green space is located in the new West Kowloon Cultural District, a development with spaces dedicated to performing arts, events, and exhibitions.

hong kong muslim travel

  • The park overlooks another portion of the harbourfront and is a great place to take scenic photos of the city (especially at night!).
  • We really loved the relaxed and chill atmosphere of the place - we saw locals having picnics, walking their dogs or eating at one of the few eateries there.

#HHWT Tip: Given that the West Kowloon Cultural District is still a pretty new development, public transport options are still a bit scarce. The easiest way to get there is by taxi or Uber (it’s only a 6-minute drive from K11 Musea). The nearest MTR station is Kowloon, which is about 20 minutes walk away ?

Admission fee: Free

Opening hours: Open daily; 6AM-11PM

Address: West Kowloon Cultural District, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

Savour authentic Lanzhou Beef Noodles for dinner (45 minutes)

hong kong muslim travel

  • After soaking in the views of the city, it’s time for dinner! Enjoy authentic hand-pulled noodles, beef and mutton dishes, and other Lanzhou specialities at this halal restaurant.

hong kong muslim travel

  • For a value-for-money option, you can get one of the set menus where you can choose a main along with a side dish (or a can of Coke if you don’t want the side-dish). We also highly recommend the mutton skewers - they were so tender and flavourful!

Halal status: Halal-certified

Average price of main dishes: HKD50-100

Opening hours: Open daily; 11AM-11PM

Address: 61 Chatham Road South Shop 5-8, G.F Park Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

Closest MTR station: Tsim Sha Tsui

Visit Wong Tai Sin, one of Hong Kong’s most iconic temples (1 hour)

hong kong muslim travel

  • Wong Tai Sin temple is a super well-known temple in Hong Kong. Locals believe that praying here can make your wishes come true! The temple was built to commemorate a monk of the same name and is visited by Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian worshippers.
  • The temple has become a popular tourist attraction, thanks to the beautifully symbolic architecture of the temple structures, as well as its significance to locals - it’s a great spot to see local religious and culture being practiced.  Visitors from all faiths are welcome in the grounds, though do be respectful of those worshipping.

hong kong muslim travel

  • As you explore the temple grounds, you’ll see locals and visitors lighting incense sticks and offering prayers. Besides being a place of worship, visitors also often seek divine guidance or have their fortunes told. In fact, there’s a whole adjacent complex where many fortune-tellers have a stall to offer their services!

#HHWT Tip: If you visit Hong Kong during the Chinese New Year period (like we did!), it’s truly a fascinating experience, as many locals visit the temple on the first day of the new year. If you’re not keen on crowds it’s best to avoid visiting during this period, but if you’re up for it, it really is a wonderful cultural experience to have in Hong Kong!

Admission fee: Free

Opening hours: Open daily; 7AM-5PM

Address: 2 Chuk Yuen Village, Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon

Closest MTR station: Wong Tai Sin (head to Exit B2)

Explore Hong Kong’s old school charm in Sham Shui Po (2 hours)

  • Sham Shui Po is a residential area located in northwestern part of Kowloon that is the perfect place to see a different side of Hong Kong. Historically populated by the working-class, the neighbourhood retains a vibe much unlike the glitzier central areas. It’s the perfect place to leisurely walk around and soak in the sights and sounds.

hong kong muslim travel

  • Sham Shui Po is a popular area to pick-up textile-related goods. In fact, there are streets dedicated to ribbons (Nam Cheong Street), fabric (Tai Nan Street) and beads (Yu Chau Street). Whether you’re looking for sewing materials, lace, or the perfect printed fabric, you’ll find it here!

#HHWT Tip: Check out this fun walking guide to Sham Shui Po that you can use to help plan where and what to explore in the neighbourhood!

hong kong muslim travel

  • Looking to try more traditional Hong Kong snacks? Then a pit-stop by A1 Tofu Company is a must! This bean curd store has been selling this beloved local snack for more than 50 years ? The bean curd comes in a variety of flavours, including black sesame, horlicks and almond paste.

Halal status: Uses fully vegetarian ingredients, with no alcohol used in the food or served.

Average Price: HKD10

Opening hours: Open daily; 7AM-9PM

Address: 118 Pei Ho Street, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong

Closest MTR station: Sham Shui Po (2 minute walk away)

hong kong muslim travel

  • Sham Shui Po is also known for having many photo-worthy spots, and one of the most iconic sights of the neighbourhood is the Man Fung and Kam Ning buildings. The Man Fung building instantly became an Instagram favourite after a Madrid-based artist painted it with a larger-than-life mural. Right next door, Kam Ning building stands out with its bright yellow hue.

#HHWT Tip: We have a full guide to the sights you can’t miss when in Sham Shui Po , including shops, other street food stalls, and more ?

Lunch as Ma’s Restaurant (45 minutes)

  • Specializing in Xinjiang cuisine, this halal-certified restaurant is only a 5-minute walk from Prince Edward MTR Station!

hong kong muslim travel

  • Choose from the variety of dishes available from their menu - some of our favourites include their sweet and sour fish, salted egg yolk prawns, and  the chilli beef. And if you haven’t been to Ma’s Restaurant before, be sure to try the veal goulash ?

hong kong muslim travel

  • Ma’s Restaurant also serves traditional Chinese desserts too, so be sure to save some space for a sweet treat to end the meal. We tried the black sesame tang yuen (glutinous rice balls) which was served steaming hot in a smooth sesame paste. Definitely a must try when you’re there!

Opening hours: Open daily; 11.30AM-11PM

Address: 21-25 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Hong Kong

Closest MTR station: Prince Edward

Have fun at the first Monopoly-themed park in the world (2 hours)

hong kong muslim travel

  • See the beloved board game come to life at Monopoly Dreams, the unique theme park located at The Peak Hong Kong.
  • The park is located on Level 3 of The Peak Galleria, which is a separate building behind the main building where passengers disembark from the tram.

#HHWT Tip: The most popular way to get to The Peak is by The Peak Tram, but you can also get there by minibus, regular public buses, and also taxi. You can read more about the different options here!

  • Be guided by a butler to Mr Monopoly (i.e. the park staff!) as you explore the different settings.

hong kong muslim travel

  • See the biggest Monopoly token in the world while exploring a room fashioned as Mr Monopoly’s house! It’s the car token and is practically as big as a real car ? You can also see rare items like a gold-plated Monopoly board.

Play the Ultimate Banking game, where you step into a booth and try to catch as much Monopoly money blown in the air within 30 seconds. You can even use the cash at the gift store (though do note there are certain terms and conditions - the staff will help explain it to you once you complete playing!).

hong kong muslim travel

  • Nathan Road starts from Sham Shui Po in the north and goes down all the way to Tsim Sha Tsui.

See the dazzling Gala of Lights show at Ocean Park (1.5 hours)

hong kong muslim travel

  • End your night with a bang by witnessing Ocean Park’s new nighttime entertainment offering, the Gala of Lights! This multimedia and performing arts display is an incredibly entertaining spectacle that will delight both children and adults.

hong kong muslim travel

  • The show is made up of a few segments, the main one being the Soul of the Ocean, an immersive 12-minute multimedia show that not only incorporates projections, special effects like water and fire jets, and music, but also a whole troupe of acrobatic dancers. The show tells the story of an ancient creature that lives within Ocean Park and its keepers.
  • We really loved the show and were blown away by the display from start to finish!

#HHWT Tip: General Admission tickets for Ocean Park includes the Gala of Lights night-time show. Alternatively, guests can also buy tickets just for the Gala of Lights (HKD240 for adults, HKD120 for children aged 11 and below), where admission to the park begins from 6.30pm onwards. During the Gala of Lights, only Aqua City Lagoon, select eateries (Ginger Grill, Neptune’s Restaurant, Lakeside Chill, Aqua City Bakery, Deep Sea Traders) and gift stores (Waterfront Gifts and OPX) will be open. Animal exhibits, thrill rides and other attractions will be closed.

hong kong muslim travel

  • The other main highlight is Visions of Hong Kong, a 6-minute multimedia fountain show that takes viewers on a journey through Hong Kong’s history, culture and identity.
  • Soul of the Ocean starts at 7pm, while Visions of Hong Kong starts at 9pm. In between the two main displays there are other fun and interactive experiences for guests, from fire and water shows, to drums that guests can play that activate water fountains and pretty light displays.

#HHWT Tip: Ocean Park also offers special ticket packages for Gala of Lights that are inclusive of dinner, however, the dinner offerings are not halal-certified. It’s best to have dinner ahead of time or bring your own food if you’re planning to see the show. If you’re spending the day at the park, you can have dinner at one of the halal-certified eateries there - just be sure to eat before they close in the evening.

Admission fee:

  • General Admission (incl. Gala of Lights): HKD498 (Adult); HKD24 (Child aged 11 & below)

Have a fun day out at Hong Kong Disneyland (full day)

hong kong muslim travel

  • If you’re Disney lovers (like us!), you can never miss out on the opportunity to visit Hong Kong Disneyland when you’re in town. We recommend devoting an entire day to spending time at this awesome theme park before heading straight to the airport!
  • Check out of your hotel after breakfast and head to Hong Kong Disneyland. We recommend taking a taxi as it’s the easiest way to get there with your luggage in tow, and also because it's best to get to the park as early as possible in the morning to beat the crowds!

#HHWT Tip: You can store your luggage at the park at the Luggage Valet on Park Promenade near the MTR station, or alternatively at the storage lockers on Main Street inside the park. Both storage locations cost HKD130 per luggage piece for for the whole day, though do note that the Luggage Valet can accommodate any luggage size, while the storage lockers can accommodate luggage up to a specific dimension (45 cm x 35 cm x 43 cm or 18” x 14” x 17”).  Find out more about the luggage storage options here .

hong kong muslim travel

  • If you’ve been to Hong Kong Disneyland before, we recommend heading straight to Tomorrowland to try their latest ride, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! In this ride, you get to ride a special vehicle when you can shoot from, fighting alongside Ant-Man and The Wasp to prevent S.H.I.E.L.D data from falling into the hands of evil organisation Hydra.
  • You can then spend your time going on all your favourite rides, be it thrilling rollercoasters like Hyperspace Mountain and Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, or more laid back rides such as Mad Hatter Tea Cups or The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh.

#HHWT Tip: For Hyperspace Mountain as well as The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh, we recommend that you get a Fastpass! The Fastpass is a system that allows you to reduce the waiting time at certain attractions by giving you a specific time to enter the attraction. To get your Fastpass, go to the Fastpass ticketing machines near the entrance of the attraction and scan your admission ticket under the reader. You’ll have to return to the attraction during the time period stated on the Fastpass ticket. There’s no extra charge for the Fastpass, so it’s a great way to make the most out of your time at the park!

hong kong muslim travel

  • For lunch, head to either Tahitian Terrace Restaurant or Explorer’s Club Restaurant, both which offer halal food. We love Explorer’s Club because it offers a variety of cuisine including Korean, Japanese and Indonesian food. Plus, there’s a prayer room conveniently located just beside Explorer’s Club too ?

hong kong muslim travel

  • Since you probably won’t be able to attend the night-time events or parades to catch your flight, make sure to catch a show or two during the daytime before you leave! You can download the park app to keep track of performance and event schedules, so you can plan ahead accordingly. Some of the top shows include Festival of The Lion King (an acrobatic musical performance featuring Simba and friends) and the Flights of Fantasy Parade (the afternoon parade featuring beloved characters from Toy Story, The Jungle Book and more!).

Head to the airport for your flight

  • Time will probably fly by at Disneyland and soon enough, it’ll be time to head home ☹
  • Retrieve your luggage and head to the airport. It’ll take around 30-minutes to get to the airport via the MTR (transfer at Tsing Yi Station and transfer to Sunny Bay Station).

#HHWT Tip: At the time of writing, there are security measures in place permitting only travellers with a valid passport and airline ticket to enter the airport. Staff are stationed at the entrance and may inspect your travel documents.

And that wraps up your short and sweet repeat visit to Hong Kong! This amazing city has so much to offer travellers, with both new and old gems to discover. Hong Kong is calling you again for your next getaway!

Ramadan: how Hong Kong’s police officers cope while fasting during the Muslim holy month

Hong Kong’s waste problem demands opening market to investment, circular-economy models: China Everbright Environment

China’s shipbuilding industry wants beijing all aboard in bid to bridge tech gap with us, south korea, china-hong kong border to 'fully reopen' in early january: scmp.

For policeman Adnan Mohammad, working in March and April means patrolling the streets of Hong Kong’s Yau Ma Tei without food or water throughout the day.

Mohammad is observing Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. This year, the holy month is expected to span from March 12 to early April.

The young officer said fasting did not hinder his ability to catch criminals, recalling an incident from last year when, despite refraining from food and water all day, he arrested a suspect just as it was time to break his fast at sunset.

Halal dim sum? Trade fair aims to boost Hong Kong’s appeal to Muslims

“The sergeant asked me to grab some food first [after the arrest], but I said I needed to finish the paperwork first,” he said. “I ended up having some light bites before finishing the work.”

Mohammad, who is of Pakistani descent, is among the more than 150 members of the city’s police force from an ethnic minority background. While he has decided to continue his duties as usual, the force has said it offers Muslim members flexible work arrangements to accommodate their needs during Ramadan.

“Depending on their needs, we will provide suitable aid at work for [colleagues who are fasting],” said Hung Ka-wai, a police community relations officer on ethnic minority support in Yau Tsim Mong district.

A senior officer familiar with the arrangements said that staff could pray in police stations where they worked, with rooms converted to prayer spaces.

Constable Salma Bibi, 24, has decided to work in the report room of Wong Tai Sin during the holy month, as it will be less physically demanding than her usual patrols.

“Officers were aware that I had to fast, that is why they arranged for me to work in the report room. I think I can still contribute to the force,” Bibi said.

Even with the adjustments, Bibi and Mohammad said that sometimes work would still get in the way of their religious commitments. For instance, they might have to perform some of their five daily prayers all at once to make up for those they missed while on duty.

Muslims mark fasting month at home, as pandemic halts mosque gatherings

The pair are, however, determined to act as a bridge between cultures at work.

Being bilingual and Muslim, officers such as Mohammad and Bibi are often asked to take up translation tasks. At times, they clarify cultural misunderstandings rather than just surmount language barriers.

Mohammad said he once had to explain to a Chinese Hongkonger who had called police to report groups of people gathering in front of the Kowloon Mosque that there was no risk of violence and that the crowds were there to have their fast-breaking meal.

Sometimes, some residents might even doubt Mohammad’s ability to carry out his work.

“I just tell them that we are all humans, let’s respect each other. My colleagues will also explain to them that I also know Chinese and can communicate with them just like anyone else,” the constable said.

Mohammad and Bibi have previously taken part in police’s Project Gemstone outreach scheme, where ethnic minority youths aged between 15 to 25 are eligible for weekly Chinese classes and other activities to introduce them to the force.

“We hope to boost their Chinese language so they can get the dream job they wish for,” Hung said.

The scheme currently has more than 800 participants, while 51 past members have joined the city’s disciplined services, including the police force, the Correctional Services Department, the Fire Services Department and the Customs and Excise Department.

Hong Kong security law was inevitable, but speed of its passing was a surprise

Truncated timetable meant washington had no time to prepare packages of sanctions to threaten legislators during debate.

The passage of Hong Kong ’s new national security law was long expected and the unanimous vote in the “all-patriot” Legislative Council was no great surprise. Article 23 of the Basic Law, Hong Kong’s quasi-constitution, requires the enactment of a such a law and after the 2020 crackdown on political opposition, the independent media and civil society, it was inevitable.

The biggest surprise was the speed with which the Hong Kong authorities, led by chief executive John Lee, pushed the legislation through. After just four weeks for public consultation, legislators finished scrutinising the 181-clause bill in six days, spent a day considering amendments and skipped a statutory 12-day notice period to go through its final stages in one day.

The law redefines sedition so that it does not have to involve incitement to violence and expands the definition of state secrets, as well as introducing very harsh sentences for some offences. Businesses, journalists’ groups and foreign governments all expressed concerns about the implications of the law for what is left of Hong Kong’s independent media and civil society.

Lee’s official justification for fast-tracking the legislation was that the external threats to Hong Kong’s national security were so urgent that there was no time to waste. More plausible was Beijing’s suggestion that, with their constitutional duty on national security done, Hong Kong’s lawmakers could now focus on strengthening the economy.

But moving the legislation through so quickly also had the advantage for its authors of wrong-footing critics abroad, particularly the United States and its European allies. The truncated timetable meant that Washington and other capitals had no time to prepare packages of sanctions with which it could threaten Hong Kong’s legislators during the debate.

[  Hong Kong passes security law aimed at quashing dissent with severe penalties  ]

Sanctions could yet come and Tuesday’s vote brought immediate and bipartisan condemnation from Capitol Hill and from overseas groups that campaign for civil liberties in Hong Kong. But foreign governments have been cautious, partly because they do not wish to be seen to interfere in a legislative process that was made in Hong Kong rather than directly imposed from Beijing.

The haste with which the law was introduced may have a price, however, in terms of the already dubious legitimacy of the Legislative Council in a city where most voters used to back pro-democracy candidates until they were banned.

One legislator, Junius Ho, complained during Tuesday’s debate that he was ridiculed when he addressed a group of teachers to explain the contents of the new law. “When I was giving the lecture, these teachers were playing video games, chatting among themselves and sleeping,” he said. “When I am there to train the trainers, they are sleeping, playing video games and even staring at me with disgust.”
