This sprawling metropolis promises a jam-packed itinerary for every type of traveler, whether you're traveling with the family or on a romantic getaway . Explore the many museums, parks and historical sites the city has to offer, including the infamous Dealey Plaza, where JFK was assassinated, or get to know Dallas' vibrant, artsy neighborhoods like Trinity Groves and the Design District. And if you're visiting during football season, catch a Dallas Cowboys game to see state pride at its best. However you spend your time, you'll be surrounded by top-notch restaurants and a surplus of shopping options.

Every year, more than 500,000 people visit this national park along the U.S.-Mexico border to spend some time outdoors. Big Bend National Park features hundreds of miles of paved and dirt roads for scenic drives, as well as 150-plus miles of hiking trails. While exploring the park's sections of the Chihuahuan Desert, the Chisos Mountains and the Rio Grande, keep your eyes peeled for more than 450 bird species, including several kinds of woodpeckers, thrashers and sparrows. At night, camp (or glamp) under the moonlight to see why Big Bend is one of the best dark sky parks in the country.

For a different kind of Texas vacation, skip the state's main cities and beach towns in favor of a visit to Fredericksburg. This Texas Hill Country locale is known for its superb shops, rich German roots and tasty wines. When you're not enjoying some retail therapy on Main Street, learn about the town's connection to Germany at the Pioneer Museum. Don't forget to sample some of Fredericksburg's delectable vino before you leave; you'll have your pick of more than 50 wineries and tasting rooms in and around Fredericksburg.

Historical relics like The Alamo are no doubt San Antonio's biggest draw. However, you don't need to be a history buff to enjoy all the city has to offer. The River Walk makes for a soothing stroll along the San Antonio River, while the expansive Brackenridge Park offers a variety of attractions and amenities. Active travelers can practice their swing at the park's golf course and ball fields, nature lovers can pass the time in its stunning Japanese Tea Garden and families can get an up-close look at the on-site San Antonio Zoo's animals. Before you leave, sample a San Antonio staple – the puffy taco.

travel town texas

If hiking is one of your favorite pastimes, then you'll want to venture to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. This national park by the southern Texas-New Mexico border houses eight of the state's 10 highest peaks, including the iconic El Capitan, and features 80-plus miles of hiking paths, such as traveler-approved routes like Devil's Hall and the Guadalupe Peak Trail. Although the scenery is stunning year-round, for extra-memorable vistas, visit in fall when the park's tree leaves turn vivid shades of red, orange and yellow.

travel town texas

This small town on Mustang Island (about 40 miles northeast of Corpus Christi) provides ample opportunities for fun in the sun. When you're not sunbathing, parasailing or splashing around at the beach, put your angling skills to the test in the "Fishing Capital of Texas" or sign up for a dolphin-watching cruise. You'll also want to keep an eye out for the endangered whooping crane and other birds in this bird-watching paradise. If you love festivals, time your visit to coincide with one of Port Aransas' events, which focus on everything from art to music to food.

travel town texas

Texas is home to some prime Gulf Coast shorelines , and South Padre Island is considered one of the best. South Padre offers 34 miles of relaxing beaches along the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. While the island has a reputation for being a prime party spot for spring breakers, the rest of the year it's favored by families thanks to its affordability and bevy of kid-friendly attractions. Head to Sea Turtle, Inc. to learn about local sea turtle rehabilitation efforts, or visit Beach Park Waterpark to cool off on a hot day.

The capital city's colorful character takes Texas to an entirely new level. Austin offers loads in the way of culture, cuisine and natural scenery. While here, enjoy unique outdoor areas like Zilker Metropolitan Park (where you'll find the natural Barton Springs Pool), various museums and plenty of delectable Tex-Mex joints. The best way to soak up Austin's contagious energy is to visit Sixth Street. This music hub is packed with bars, restaurants and live music venues that have helped Austin earn its "Live Music Capital of the World" moniker. For a souvenir, head to SoCo to pick up a pair of authentic cowboy boots.

Originally inhabited by wild horses, the aptly named Mustang Island is now known for its miles of beaches and outdoor activities. On this 18-mile-long barrier island, which sits about 30 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, visitors will find Mustang Island State Park, a popular place to go mountain biking, kayaking and swimming. The park is also home to endangered sea turtles and more than 400 bird species, making it an excellent destination to spot wildlife, and boasts 5 miles of beaches. For more outdoor recreation outside the park, travelers can visit North Packery Beach to enjoy water sports like kiteboarding, wakeboarding and surfing.

travel town texas

Once a lesser-known, low-key getaway, this small town just north of Mexico now attracts space enthusiasts thanks to its SpaceX launch site. Beachgoers will still find plenty of allure with Boca Chica's 8-mile-long stretch of sand, but remember to bring your own equipment since water sports rentals like surfboards and kiteboards are not available on-site. You'll also want to plan ahead, as the beach is closed near rocket launch dates. While here, save time for wildlife watching, as the area is a haven for various bird and sea turtle species, particularly in spring and fall.

Renowned as one of America's top barbecue destinations, Houston offers travelers a finger-licking good time. But did you know Houston is also a culture hub? Within the urban sprawl, visitors can check out museums galore, from NASA's impressive Johnson Space Center to the quirky Art Car Museum. Many of the city's restaurants and shops are also covered in Instagram-worthy murals. Plus, with the world-class Houston Zoo , verdant Buffalo Bayou Park and a children's museum, Houston is an ideal (and affordable) vacation spot for families. Consider purchasing a CityPASS to save even more coin.

travel town texas

Corpus Christi features several scenic shorelines and can't-miss attractions to keep you entertained for days. Popular stretches of sand in this Gulf Coast city include McGee Beach and North Beach, which is also home to two of Corpus Christi's most visited sights, the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington. Additional museums and entertainment venues can be found in SEA, the city's Sports, Entertainment and Arts District. Meanwhile, music fans can visit several sites dedicated to the emblematic Tejano singer Selena, including the Selena Museum and the Mirador de la Flor memorial.

travel town texas

Sitting in between Fort Worth and Dallas (roughly 23 miles from both), Grapevine delights all travelers, whether they're outdoorsy types, historians or wine lovers. Lake Grapevine is a popular boating and fishing spot, while its surrounding trails attract hikers and bikers. Meanwhile, history buffs can engage in 19th-century heritage events at Nash Farm or ride into the past on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. As its name suggests, Grapevine is also home to several tasting rooms along Texas' Urban Wine Trail. What's more, with some of the best water parks in Texas , an aquarium and a LEGOLAND Discovery Center, Grapevine is incredibly kid-friendly.

travel town texas

Located about 50 miles southeast of Houston, Galveston attracts Texans looking for a convenient place to spend some time at the beach. The island features family-friendly spots like Stewart Beach (with amenities like lifeguards, volleyball courts and a playground) and Pleasure Pier (which features an array of games and rides). Meanwhile, Schlitterbahn Waterpark offers yet another place to play. Away from the sand, visitors can explore the shop-, restaurant- and nightclub-filled Strand District, named a National Historic Landmark for its well-preserved Victorian architecture. Travelers will also want to check out other historical sights, such as Bishop's Palace and Moody Mansion.

travel town texas

Easy to reach by ferry from Port Aransas, this former ranch is now a prime beach destination. Because San José Island is privately owned, the island's only publicly accessible land is its 21-mile stretch of unspoiled sand situated below the vegetation line. But visitors will find plenty to do on the beach. The island's more than 600 kinds of fish and roughly 300 bird species make it a terrific place to go fishing and birding. Other popular pastimes here include shelling and surfing.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Round Top, Texas

Round Top, Texas, is called the 'Cotswolds of Texas,' blending English countryside charm with Western flair.

Getting There

Pulling into Round Top, Texas (population 93) for the first time feels like discovering a hidden gem. The stylish small town appears almost suddenly after miles of country roads, a drive accented by white fences and sightings of longhorn cattle. Barely a square mile in size, Round Top is made up of a collection of historic buildings which house antique and vintage shopping, clothing boutiques, and even a cheese shop, a candy store, and a Hallmark-esque coffee and pie counter.

Courtesy of Travel Texas

The New York Times deemed Round Top “the Cotswolds of Texas,” and a local was quoted in CultureMap San Antonio calling it “the next Jackson Hole.” Texas Monthly even gave it the title of “the Aspen of Texas.” But while there are touches of each affluent destination throughout Round Top — where the charm of the English countryside meets the Western flair and sky-high real estate prices found in the mountain towns — it has a distinct personality and appeal, even outside of the tri-annual Original Round Top Antiques Fair . Since the late 1960s, Round Top has played host to “The Show,” a multi-day extravaganza that has grown exorbitantly over the years. Today, hundreds of thousands of visitors descend upon the town and the tents, barns, and hayfields along Highway 237 in hopes of finding or selling a variety of antique furniture, art, and textiles.

While antiquing may have put Round Top on the map and in the pages of many a magazine, there are a variety of other reasons to head to the tiny town — including a world-renowned musical institute, a historic dance hall, and an expertly designed boutique hotel with top-tier amenities and a wholly original story. Plus, there isn’t a chain restaurant in sight. Before you book your flight or clear your schedule, here’s what to know about visiting Round Top, Texas.

Courtesy of Hotel Lulu

Opened in 2021, Hotel Lulu is relatively new on the scene, but its renovated and restored buildings – formerly known as Bybee Square — give it a strong sense of place, one that perfectly balances the forward-thinking mentality of its new owners. Cinda Murphy de Palacios and Armando Palacios of Texas-based hospitality group Palacios Murphy designed the 14-room property with the Italian phrase “il dolce far niente” as their North Star. Translated to “the sweetness of doing nothing,” it’s a message felt everywhere — from the luxurious bathrobes and Le Labo toiletries to the cozy “napping room” in the larger suites and the overall peace and quiet noticed the moment you arrive on site.

Hotel Lulu is spread across six 19th-century bungalows and three private cottages. In between buildings, you’ll find an herb garden, a formal garden, and a small pool, ideal for days when you need respite from the Texas heat. Leaving Hotel Lulu for sustenance is also optional. A breakfast basket filled with croissants, muffins, yogurt, and fresh berries can be delivered upon request, and the hotel restaurant, Lulu’s, and cocktail bar, Il Cuculo, are open seven days a week (a rarity in Round Top).

If Hotel Lulu is booked up on your chosen dates, Round Top has several other unique properties to choose from. The Frenchie is a made-for-girls-trips type of hotel, and Rancho Pillow ’s eclectic nature was brought to life by owner and designer Sheila Youngblood. You can have an entire cottage to yourself at The Vintage Round Top , or snag one of the rooms at Wander Inn , the boutique hotel run by the owners of Junk Gypsy.

Antique shopping tends to be the most talked-about activity in Round Top — and there’s no shortage of well-stocked rooms and expansive venues to browse for a wooden kitchen table from the 1800s or a well-worn pair of cowboy boots. Market Hill , Round Top Ranch Antiques , White Barn , 550 Market, and Round Top Antiques and Design Center are open outside of the festival season for visitors to peruse their goods. Houston designer Courtney Barton , Curate by Stash , Wimberly , and the two-story Townsend Provisions offer more modern takes on the Texas shopping experience. If you’re looking for artwork, specifically, you’ll find original pieces at both Humble Donkey Studio and The Gallery at Round Top .

Round Top isn’t all shopping and hunting down the best finds, though. If you head about a mile outside of town and turn left on Jaster Street, you’ll come across the Round Top Festival Institute . Set on over 200 acres of green space, the institute — founded in 1971 by internationally renowned concert pianist James Dick — is centered around its 1,000-seat Festival Concert Hall, an acoustic and visual wonder. Outside of a calendar of live music performances and master classes , the campus offers a collection of thoughtful additions that are open to the public, from a museum room where you can explore the personal effects of David W. Guion (the famed composer who arranged cowboy tune “Home on the Range” as sheet music) to walking trails, gardens, lakes, and a restored chapel from the 1800s. You can visit on your own, or schedule a guided walking tour with one of the institute’s knowledgeable staff.

With music still on the mind, cap off your visit to Round Top with some country tunes and line dancing at The Stone Cellar , a true Texas honkytonk.

For a town as small as Round Top, it’s surprisingly full of culinary delights and charming places to grab a drink — alcoholic or otherwise. The Palacios Murphy brand expands to Lulu’s , the rustic Italian eatery within the hotel of the same name; Il Cuculo, a cocktail bar with Instagram-worthy murals painted by artist Andrea Condara; fast-casual Popi Burger ; and Tex-Mex spot Mandito’s , where a bowl of guacamole and a cold margarita await after a long day of shopping.

Family-owned Royers Round Top Cafe , as well as its sister business, Royers Pie Haven , beckon visitors with their old-school charm and famous concoctions (try the Texas Trash Pie). Grab-and-go breakfast tacos, baked goods, and a variety of caffeinated beverages from Round Top Coffee Shop are perfect for an early start, and a mid-afternoon salad-and-sandwich pitstop at The Garden Co. is key for keeping your energy up. At the end of the day, wind down with a glass of cold sauvignon blanc and a slice of margherita pizza on the outdoor patio at Prost on Block 29 .

Best Time to Visit

If you want to experience Round Top at its height of popularity, your trip should fall during the winter, spring, or autumn antique fair. The fair’s March and October dates occur at the same time as the famed Marburger Farm Antique Show — so you’re pretty much guaranteed to not return home empty-handed. Travelers who don’t care to battle with thousands of other tourists for hotel availability, parking space, or restaurant tables can time their visit to occur outside of the height of antique shopping. Most retailers are open year round, but many close their doors on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan accordingly.

Round Top is just about halfway between Austin and Houston — 73 and 96 miles away, respectively. If you’re flying into either Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) or George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (IAH), you’ll need to rent a car to get to Round Top and explore the surrounding area.

At less than 2,000 permanent residents, according to the 2020 US census, Jefferson is the definition of a small town. Jefferson may not be one of the tourist towns that generally make the list in Texas, but there is plenty to see and enjoy in this quirky rural area.

Jefferson is one of relatively few towns in Texas with pre-Civil War history. Despite the low population, there are nearly 100 historic landmarks in the small town of Jefferson, including churches, a Civil War meat packing plant, and several factories that are over 100 years old.

After exploring the rich history of the area, visitors can enjoy the cozy southern-style cooking from local restaurants and make the most of their time in one of the best small towns in Texas.

  • Population of Jefferson: ~1,875 people

Travelers looking for a vibrant art scene may not think of West Texas, but hiding in the tiny town of Marfa, a place that just over 1,800 people call home, is a unique display. Marfa has gained some fame in recent years for its unexpected variety of artwork, including several pieces by Andy Warhol, among others.

Some particularly unique permanent displays, like the " Prada Marfa ," continue to draw visitors to this unusual stop. With the added benefit of the town's small size and friendly disposition, there is no reason not to visit this one-of-a-kind small Texas town.

  • Population of Marfa: ~1,840 people

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is slightly larger than some of the absolute smallest towns in Texas. With just over 11,000 people, Fredericksburg is hardly big city material, but attractions are sure to invite. Fredericksburg is known for having some of the best vineyards in Texas , many of which can be visited and toured by guests.

Fredericksburg also has a unique German theme throughout the town. The locally owned restaurants and shops are full not only of southern hospitality but German-themed food, sweets, and souvenirs. There is a downtown square with cute stores, such as a flower shop called Buds For You and a clothing store called Casa Blanca Boutique. There is also a public art project that has resulted in several murals and other pieces going up in town.

  • Population of Munday: ~1,240 people

During its last census, Wimberley had 2,626 people living in it, and this is another charming town to see. First up, there is the Blue Hole Park, a lagoon in which people can swim, and the Blanco River. There is a downtown square that attracts numerous visitors with its shops and restaurants.

There are wineries and inns nestled in this pretty Hill Country area. And there are regular Market Days, too, which allow even more people to discover even more goodies in one of the best small towns in all of Texas!

Graham is in north central Texas, it has been around since 1871, and it has around 8,900 residents. There are several churches, a hospital, a radio station, a couple of parks, and a drive-in movie theater.

There are a number of exceptional downtowns to explore in Texas , but they would be hard-pressed to compete with the small-town downtown scene in Graham. Graham's downtown square, which claims to be the biggest in the nation, also has a movie theater, as well as several shops and eating establishments. Up until just a couple of years ago, Graham was one of the few towns left in the state that was dry, meaning no one could sell wine or beer.

  • Population of Graham: ~8,765 people

Bastrop is part of the Greater Austin area, and its population is 7,218. This charming place is full of historical homes, lovely shops, a state park, art galleries, annual community events, and The Bastrop Advertiser, which is the oldest continuously published weekly newspaper in the state.

Furthermore, several films have been filmed in this location over the years, such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre , Courage Under Fire, Michael, Hope Floats, Bernie and Boyhood, and director Richard Linklater is even from Bastrop.

  • Population of Bastrop: ~7,218 people

Albany is an additional cute town in Texas, and it has just under 2,000 residents. Like the other spots that have been listed out here today, there is a great square full of boutiques, as well as a gorgeous courthouse.

One of the biggest draws in Albany is the Fort Griffin Fandangle, which happens each year in June in order to give the history of Fort Griffin, a military outpost in the area that now functions as a state park. As the oldest outdoor musical in the state, this show combines the American West, catchy songs, humor, and a true look back through time.

  • Population of Albany: ~ 1,927 people

Dripping Springs

About 4,800 people live in Dripping Springs, near Austin, and it has become a real tourist destination. It is the state’s wedding capital. It is full of wineries, breweries, and distilleries. It is also the state’s first Dark Sky Community, which has a lighting ordinance that has reduced outdoor lighting to a minimum since 2011.

There are also several celebrities from this Central Texas town, such as Kyle Chandler, Jesse James, and Jensen and Danneel Ackles, who own the Family Business Beer Company in Dripping Springs.

  • Population of Dripping Springs: ~4,787 people

Near Fort Worth, people can find Granbury, which is another little spot that is full of charm and history. There are just over 11,400 people in this town, and a good amount of the buildings found on the downtown square are historical landmarks.

One of these is the iconic Granbury Opera House, which actually puts on productions. Additionally, Davy Crockett's wife, Elizabeth, lived here in the 1800s and is buried here at the Acton State Historic Site, Texas’ smallest state park.

  • Population of Granbury: ~11,424 people

One of the most unique places to visit in Texas , there is one small town that boasts tons of activity, despite housing less than 100 permanent residents. That small Texas town would be Round Top, with just 91 residents. This place is best known for pie at the Royers Round Top Café and for the Round Top Antiques Fair; this event happens every spring and fall, it draws in tons of people from around the country, and it features booth after booth of antiques.

Speaking of antiques, Round Top is also home to the Junk Gypsy Company, as these design stars have a store and an inn in this location. With such unusual activities to enjoy, it's no wonder Round Top is one of the best small towns in Texas.

  • Population of Round Top: ~91 people

Heading to the Texas coast? Here are 5 things you should do in historic Port Lavaca.

travel town texas

PORT LAVACA — Get this straight from the start: "Port L" is not "Port A."

Port Lavaca is a residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural town of approximately 12,000 on Lavaca Bay, an inner arm of Matagorda Bay.

For its part, Port Aransas is an increasingly upscale beach community, as well as a favored spot for vacationing Texans, on Mustang Island, right on the Gulf of Mexico.

More: Texas History: Among Galveston's historical gems, don't skip the Rosenberg Library

Recently, I daydreamed: Why not explore one of those ports during our annual winter break on the Texas coast?

Port A is a three-hour drive from where we hunker down for a "reading fortnight" each winter on Surfside Beach, located on Follett's Island, one isle down from Galveston. Given that, the Port Aransas option would not be an easy day trip.

Port L, however, is just two hours away if one zips down the recently improved State Highway 35 through Angleton and Bay City. Nearby on Matagorda Bay is Indianola, a town with buckets of Texas history.

That option hit the sweet spot.

As luck would have it, I secured a first-class guide for the day in Gary Ralston, a Port Lavaca native who retired from facilities management at the Electric Generation Station near Bay City. He serves on the Calhoun County Historical Commission.

Minutes after we met up at the local VFW hall, Ralston showed me a small, once-lost cemetery that he and historical commission members have explored with ground-penetrating radar.

I was hooked.

But first, the promise of Indianola

We spent the bulk of our time not in Port Lavaca, but along the western shore of Matagorda Bay in Magnolia Beach, Indian Point (Old Indianola) and the storied town of Indianola, once the second-largest port on the Texas coast after Galveston. The town was wiped out by hurricanes in 1875 and again in 1886.

Now a tiny, relaxed bayside community with cabins on stilts, Indianola and its environs abound with historical incidents, including the exploits of ill-fated — and ill-tempered — French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle during the 17th century; skirmishes between the Karankawa and the Spanish during the 18th century; Civil War clashes during the 19th century; and a large World War II artillery training base during the 20th century.

More: Here are 10 reasons why Corpus Christi is the most promising city in Texas

All this on one vulnerable sliver of sand.

I'll return to these Indianola-related subjects in a future column. Meanwhile, with generous help from Ralston, let's look at five things you must do in historic Port Lavaca, located at the wide mouth of Lavaca Bay.

1. Start at the Port Lavaca harbor

There is no better way to grasp the significance of Port Lavaca — originally called La Vaca, Spanish for "the cow" — than to wander onto one of the harbor's piers, bulkheads or marinas.

Looking south from one of these vantage points, you see the town rising on a short bluff 15 to 20 feet above the bay. Although Port Lavaca, like every other spot on the Texas coast, has been battered by hurricanes — the worst in modern history was Hurricane Carla in 1961 — its elevation has been its salvation.

To the north across the bay, one spies Point Comfort, home to a hulking, abandoned Alcoa Aluminum plant and a newer Formosa Plastics plant. These and other industries are connected to the Gulf via a dredged deep-sea channel.

In the mid-distance, one sees a low fishing pier, one of three on Lavaca Bay; and sand bars exposed above the shallow bay, some of them white with pelican colonies.

Near the pier, Lighthouse Park offers a beach and a nature trail over the marsh via boardwalk. Half Moon Reef Lighthouse is located next to the Bauer Center, near the park entrance. Erected in 1858, it originally stood in Matagorda Bay on Half Moon Reef.

To the east, you look out over Matagorda Bay. To the west is Lavaca Bay, and beyond that, out of sight, is Garcitas Creek, where the remains of La Salle's colony were found.

Ralston and I parked on a large bulkhead that included a silhouette sculpture of the Texans who attempted to defend Port Lavaca from bombardment by federal gunships on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, 1862. With this attack in mind, one resident, Capt. Edgar Collins Singer, invented an underwater mine in February 1863. He later manufactured them in Alabama for the Confederate Navy. Singer was also and investor in the H.L. Hunley, a submarine that sunk the USS Houstonic at Charleston Harbor in 1864.

More: Texas road trip: Tell us what to see, do and eat in Corpus Christi, and anywhere nearby

We visited an abundance of Texas Historical Markers that day. Calhoun County hosts 84 of them, a mighty high figure for a county with only 20,000 residents. One reason might be Ralston, who heads the markers committee for the Calhoun County Historical Commission, which partners with the Texas Historical Commission on research, finance and placement.

2. Time travel at Melcher's Hardware Store

After the waterfront, we tooled around the historic business district of this county seat. The streets felt full of activity, although the landmark 1904 Lavaca Hotel, recently renovated, appeared to be empty. (The 1903 Luther Hotel, located not far away in Palacios, was threatened with demolition but has been saved by volunteers headed up by Margaret Doughty and Edith Gower.)

Ralston took me to Melcher's Hardware Store, which traces its origins back to the 19th century and its predecessor, the Branch Company. The owner — and quite a storyteller! — is J.C. Melcher, whose grandfather took over the business in the early 20th century.

To step inside Melcher's is to enter the past, since it looks, at first, as if nothing has changed for more than 100 years. Thousands of items, including some collectibles, are arranged above wide pine flooring planks. At the same time, it operates as a functioning hardware store. While we were there, J.C. Melcher took time from his stories to help customers who needed some essential supplies.

More: Visiting shrines, missions, presidios, vaults and other hallowed places in South Texas

Melcher, who descends from Prussian and Czech ancestors, is related to immigrants who settled in Central Texas. Early on, the store was set up on a system used by dry-goods stores that allowed farmers to purchase supplies on credit until they sold their harvests. (If you enter Port Lavaca from the east, you drive through miles of flat farmland used for cotton, corn and other crops, at the time ashy gray and ready for spring planting.)

Melcher's office is its own wonderland of old supplies, maps and curiosities. Stop by and stay a while. He might show you how he operated the old elevator at the back of the store.

3. Reflect on history at the Calhoun County Museum

The Calhoun County Museum is among the best of its kind in Texas. It includes artifacts rescued from La Belle, a sunken ship from the La Salle expedition. The remains of the ship and many more artifacts can be seen at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.

Thanks to the county's financial support, this museum keeps regular hours five days a week, a rarity among small Texas institutions. Director Vicky Cox welcomed us into a large segmented room that included dioramas of Indianola and La Salle's colony.

The county seat, it turns out, was founded after the 1840 Comanche raid on nearby Linnville and Victoria, the largest city in the immediate area. That raid, deep into settled Texas, was followed by the Battle of Plum Creek, a running conflict fought near Lockhart. Residents of Linnville, which was burned to the ground, moved a few miles away to Port Lavaca, which was laid out in 1842.

More: Our Think, Texas road trip to Corpus Christi just got bigger. Too big for one visit.

Among the most charismatic artifacts at the museum is the last third-order fresnel lens from the Matagorda Island Lighthouse. The original was placed on a 79-foot-tall cast iron tower in 1852 on the west side of Pass Cavallo.

4. Wander through cemeteries and battle sites

During my time in Calhoun County, we visited three historic cemeteries and two battle sites.

One of the first stops was the grounds of the Battle of Norris Bridge. In November 1863, about 40 Texas Rangers tried to burn the bridge over Chocolate Bayou. About 3,000 Union infantrymen approached, put out the conflagration, and then fired on the Rangers. Their captain ordered a retreat, and the Rangers scattered in all directions.

Mistaking a herd of cattle on a distant hill for Rangers, the Union soldiers aimed their guns on this herd and shot all the bovines. The one fatality among the troops was a Union officer who was downed by a musket shot through the thigh, according to a Texas Historical Marker at the site.

This was one of few direct engagements of armies on the Texas front during the Civil War. A new playground and a picnic area now grace the battleground.

"One place of interest to visit in Port Lavaca that you didn’t already see is the historic Ranger Cemetery," Ralston says. "The earliest grave is H. Oram Watts, customs collector at Linnville. He was killed in the Great Comanche Raid of 1840. It’s located on the City Harbor."

5. Eat to your heart's delight

While I was growing up in Houston, my parents would load their six kids into the station wagon, not equipped with air conditioning, to visit my paternal grandparents in Corpus Christi. We begged to take the long way, that is, the coastal highway.

We might stop in Rockport for the attractions around the harbor, such as the Texas Maritime Museum, or at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge to seek out endangered whooping cranes, or perhaps linger for a meal in Port Lavaca, which we associated with comfort seafood.

During adult road trips, I’ve stopped at Bayside Seafood (2055 Texas 35) and the Lighthouse Cafe (2090 Texas 35) in Port Lavaca. The food and especially the atmosphere comported with my childhood memories. Both are still open for business.

These days, Ralston endorses Texas Traditions Grill & Bar ("I’d say the best there is in Port Lavaca"), the Green Iguana Grill, Magic Asian Cuisine ("Small but good"), Los Rios Mexican Mexican Grill & Seafood, Leones Mexican Grill y Panaderia, and Cathy's Food Trailer in Calhoun Plaza ("Not always there, but excellent. She owned a popular restaurant in Port O’Connor for many years and now just operates out of the trailer.")

31 Things to Do for the Big Eclipse This April

On April 8, the moon will blot out the sun along a roughly 4,200-mile-long, 115-mile-wide path across North America. Where will you watch it? Here are some ideas.

A young boy lying on the grass, with black-framed eclipse glasses on, wears a blue jumpsuit with NASA patches on it. He is pressing the glasses to his face with both hands.

By Danielle Dowling

Danielle Dowling, a Times editor with degrees in physics and science education, also reported on last October’s annular eclipse from Texas.

Wherever you go to catch the total solar eclipse on April 8, those three or four minutes of daytime darkness — no matter how spectacular — might not be enough.

You may want to build it out to a weekend’s worth of activities while staying somewhere fun or indulging in some self-care. Or maybe you would prefer to pair this bucket list event with another. After all, it will be about 21 years before another total solar eclipse of this magnitude returns to the contiguous United States.

With the path of totality starting on the Pacific coast of Mexico, heading northeast through 13 U.S. states and ending in Newfoundland, Canada, there are an overwhelming number of eclipse-oriented events to choose from, with something to satisfy just about any desire. Here are 31 options.

Hang out with NASA

Space nerds, kids at heart and actual children may appreciate a little guidance from NASA scientists, who will spread out across numerous celebrations along the eclipse’s path — at free or reasonably priced events in places like Mazatlán, Mexico; Austin, Dallas, Kerrville, Stonewall and Waco, Texas; Carbondale, Ill.; Cleveland; and Niagara Falls, N.Y. NASA has also teamed up with Purdue University and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a day of track tours and STEM symposiums ($20) at the racetrack.

Get hitched

Among astrologers, a solar eclipse represents a new beginning, so it offers a rather auspicious backdrop for nuptials. At Total Eclipse of the Heart in Russellville, Ark. (April 6 to 8), you can come for the weekend of hot air balloons, barbecue and ax throwing, and stay for the mass wedding ceremony, which will be held minutes before the eclipse. Tickets are $100 for each day’s festivities (there’s no extra fee to get married); aspiring newlyweds must register for the ceremony at totaleclipserussellville.com/elope . At the Texclipse Music Festival in Junction, Texas (April 6 to 8), you can exchange vows en masse during the eclipse, as well as treat yourself to local entertainment and a chili cook-off. A weekend pass is $135, and the marriage fee is $100, which includes 10 photographs from the ceremony. For each festival, you will still need to apply for a marriage license beforehand (you’ll probably want to get on that as soon as possible).

Choose your soundtrack

Texas dominates the musical offerings with some big-name lineups. At the Texas Eclipse festival in Burnet (April 5 to 9), prepare to have your senses flooded. In addition to more than 100 acts, including Tiga , the Golden Dawn Arkestra and the Disco Biscuits , the festival will offer a dizzying array of entertainment, including an immersive experience by the arts collective Meow Wolf . A four-day general admission pass is $349, and accommodations range from car camping ($175) to a glamping tent ($1,750). In Waco, the Eclipse Over Texas festival will present free concerts, with Band of Horses on April 5 and Big Boi and Arrested Development on April 6. And over in Austin, at the Moody Amphitheater in Waterloo Park, Vampire Weekend will serenade the sun as it slips into shadow on April 8 (it’s also the frontman Ezra Koenig’s 40th birthday). The show is sold out, but resale tickets are available through platforms like StubHub and Ticketmaster .

Arkansas will also bring the noise. Fans of underground music may want to head to Hot Springs, where the Ecliptic Festival (April 5 to 8) will feature acts like Blonde Redhead , Sun Ra Arkestra , Mary Lattimore , Deerhoof and Quintron . A four-day pass is $385, and day passes start at $70. Glamping packages range from $1,350 to $1,650; if you bring your own tent, camping costs $85 a night, or $300 for the weekend. About 200 miles northeast, in Dyess, you can celebrate the Man in Black before the sky turns black at Johnny Cash’s boyhood home . The event’s full weekend primitive camping package ($400) will get you a 20-by-20-foot spot to park and car camp from April 5 to 9, as well as four tickets to the Arkansas Roots Music Festival, taking place there on April 6. It will also get you four tickets to the NASA Lunch and Learn event on April 7, and four pairs of Johnny Cash Boyhood Home eclipse glasses. Unfortunately, Dyess lies just outside the path of totality, so you’ll need to drive about an hour west to see the eclipse in its full glory.

With the bluegrass musician Ricky Skaggs as one of the top names on its lineup, the Solar Strings festival (April 5 to 8) will fill its 700-plus-acre site in the Missouri Ozarks with the sounds of guitars, banjos, fiddles and more. A four-day general admission pass that includes car camping is $145; glamping packages are also available.

Ride the rails or hit the slopes

A few spots are still available aboard the Solar Eclipse Limited , whose fully restored Pullman cars will leave Penn Station in New York on April 7, headed for Niagara Falls, N.Y. There, the train will serve as a mini-hotel, providing food and accommodations as you take in the celestial sights. If its more-than-$8,000 price tag is a little too rich, you can travel to the village of Arcade, in western New York, and take a trip on the vintage Arcade & Attica Railroad , which will leave at 2 p.m. on April 8 and make a stop to view the totality at 3:19 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults, $19 for children. If you prefer zipping through the snow, Smugglers’ Notch in Vermont is holding a weekend-long celebration capped off by a Winter Eclipse Carnival from noon to 4 p.m. on April 8.

Make a run for the border

Since the eclipse will start in Mexico and wrap up in eastern Canada, you have the option to go in either direction. If you head south, you’ll most likely be blessed with great weather (the probability of cloud cover in most Mexican towns and cities along the path averages about 20 to 30 percent). Mazatlán is the safest bet. Hotel rooms are still available and there’s an expansive boardwalk where you and your fellow eclipse watchers can gather to view the totality, which will last 4 minutes 27 seconds there.

Up in Canada, the rainbows that hover above Niagara Falls will turn red, as shorter wavelengths of light, like blue and green, are scattered more easily during totality. Prime eclipse-viewing spots in the area include the SkyWheel , the butterfly conservatory and Queen Victoria Park , where the Niagara Symphony Orchestra will kick off a free rock concert as the eclipse reaches its peak. In Montreal, you’ll be able to pair skyline views with daytime darkness on an island in the St. Lawrence River. Parc Jean-Drapeau has teamed up with the Space for Life planetarium to offer an afternoon of education and entertainment before the sun has its moment, all at no charge. The only drawback is that Montreal is on the edge of the path of totality, which means it will be in darkness for just a little over two minutes. (On the plus side, you’ll be in Montreal .)

Entertain the kids

If you’re taking your children to see the eclipse, they will need distractions. What’s better than an indoor water park, like the one at the Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky, Ohio? Near the centerline of the eclipse’s path, it’s well situated, and its viewing party will offer free wolf ears for the kids and moon pies for everyone. A family suite that includes unlimited access to the park averages nearly $330 a night. You can also find child-friendly activities if you’re willing to travel back in time. Kinmundy Log Cabin Village in Kinmundy, Ill., will open its grounds to visitors from April 6 to 8, and while you won’t be able to stay in one of its 19th-century log cabins, you can explore them, with some occupied by volunteers re-enacting pioneer life. There will be a bonfire each night, and food trucks will be on site on April 7 and 8. Camping and parking for all three days is $150. At the Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford, N.Y., the third-largest living museum in the United States, experience life as it was in New York State from the 1790s to 1900. From April 5 to 7, you can attend a magic-lantern show, write a poem with a celestial motif, and sample 19th-century eclipse-themed treats for $17. On the day of the eclipse, $250 will get you and a carload of friends into the viewing area; individual tickets start at $55.

Treat yourself

Add some aahs to your oohs with the Moon Shadow package at La Cantera Resort & Spa in San Antonio, which includes an opening-night reception, a complimentary bottle of bubbly and a viewing party, starting at $3,500 for a three-night stay for two. Or how about a 15-day cruise through the Panama Canal — with a chance to witness the eclipse at sea near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico? Interior rooms are still available for $1,199 on the Emerald Princess , departing from Los Angeles on April 5. Or perhaps you have always wanted to roll down the highway in a luxury R.V., which becomes an asset if the weather takes a turn for the worse and clearer skies lie just a few hours’ drive away. Spot2Nite.com offers packages starting at $625 a night that combine R.V. rentals with campground sites from Texas to Ohio.

Fly the darkened skies

The best thing about viewing an eclipse from an airplane? “You don’t have to worry about clouds because you’re high above them. And at 35,000 to 40,000 feet, you’re seeing the eclipse against a much clearer, transparent sky as opposed to being at ground level,” said Joseph Rao, an associate and guest lecturer at Hayden Planetarium and an avid eclipse chaser who has seen 13 totalities — five aboard an aircraft . Delta Air Lines has been advertising path-of-totality flights from Austin (sold out) and Dallas-Fort Worth to Detroit. Southwest Airlines (which is running a sweepstakes to win a seat) also offers scheduled flights along the path. The downsides of an air-clipse? “You’re experiencing the event in a sort of sterile environment,” Mr. Rao said. Also, the angle of the sun in the sky at the time of totality may not line up with the view from a typical airplane window, which could limit some passengers’ ability to see it unless the pilots bank or set a special course — as a few reportedly did during the 2017 total eclipse.

Know Before You Go

Mind the centerline: When picking the spot to view the eclipse, remember that the closer you are to the middle of the path, the longer the eclipse will last. As you plan your trip, consult an eclipse map for the prime spots.

Factor in traffic: In the United States, there are about 32 million people living along the eclipse’s path, and tons more will be heading toward it. Give yourself extra time.

Bring some cash: If you’re headed to a rural area, the hordes joining you there will most likely tax the infrastructure. If the internet goes down, your credit card will become just another piece of plastic, and your phone a shiny brick.

Have backup eye protection: Most festivals will be handing out free solar eclipse glasses, but if you lose them, you won’t be able to track the moon as it slides over the sun (during the brief few minutes of totality, you can safely look at it without protective eyewear , according to NASA). Check the American Astronomical Society’s list of trusted manufacturers and sellers, then place an order now. Like, right now.

  • 8 Most Charming River Towns in Texas to Visit in 2024

Whenever you think of Texas , you often conjure the image of a a desert where tumbleweeds and old-school cowboys are swept away in hot winds. However, the Lone Star State is not necessarily arid. Several bountiful and nutritious rivers crisscross the land, bringing fertility to a stereotypically lifeless region. These azure serpents are some of the most charming river towns in Texas that visitors will visit in 2024. From history-heavy towns like Goliad and Gonzales to jubilant and tenacious settlements like Concan and New Braunfels, these towns, alongside Texas’ glorious rivers, are evidence of the state’s vivacious atmosphere. See for yourself why these towns are the most charming river towns in Texas.

Historic downtown buildings in the courthouse square housing shops and businesses - Goliad, Texas

Basking beside the San Antonio River, Goliad is the third oldest community in Texas. Beginning in 1749, when Spanish missionaries relocated the Mission Espiritu Santo de Zuniga from the Guadalupe River to the San Antonio River, Goliad became a prominent exodus destination for many Catholics. Today, the refurbished, Spanish Colonial-era Mission of Nuestra Senora del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga can be worshipped and admired at the Goliad State Park. Visitors can also pay homage to General Ignacio Zaragoza at the Presidio la Bahia, the place of his birth.

Nearby, the Fannin Battleground State Historic Sites memorialize Goliad’s most brutal historical episode, the Goliad Massacre. It was there that Colonel James W. Fannin and 342 of his soldiers were executed after the Battle of Coleta Creek during the Texan War for Independence. During the battle of San Jacinto, soldiers shouted, "Remember Goliad!" to inspire morale. Only about 26 miles from Victoria, find out more of what Goliad has to offer while staying at Antlers Inn.

Street view in Gonzales, Texas

On the banks of the Guadalupe River in the town of Gonzales, the Texas Revolution commenced with the first cannon fire. Travelers can admire the actual cannon that started the conflict at the Gonzales Memorial Museum. More importantly, you can appreciate the volunteers from Gonzales who fought in the Alamo , known as the Immortal 32. For a more visceral experience of the past, one can tour the estates of Eggleston House and the Pioneer Village Living History Center or see the artifacts and exhibits of the J.B. Wells House Museum. Amazingly, there are over 100 historical markers all over Gonzales, educating self-guided tourists about the deep history the town has experienced, such as the 1835 Attack at Sandies Water Hole and the 1835 Battle of Gonzales. Uncover more secrets and knowledge from Gonzales, only 73 miles from San Antonio .

New Braunfels

Aerial view of New Braunfels, Texas

New Braunfels, midway between the cities of San Antonio and Austin, is an austere, German-inspired oasis in a desert of high-spirited, cowboy Texan culture. The town is dissected not by one but two major rivers in Texas, the Guadalupe and Comal rivers. These twin waterways meander through New Braunfels’ arboreal parks, such as Cypress Bend and Landa Park. The Sophienburg Museum & Archives tell of the German immigrants’ trials and tribulations in establishing New Braunfels. One can be thrust into the past while walking through the historic Gruene district , where German-Texan architecture like Gruene Hall—a concert hall for famed musicians like Lyle Lovett and Hal Ketchum—stands proud and tall.

Beneath the ground, the Natural Bridge Caverns houses a network of limestone caves, while the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch fosters a safari for the local wildlife in the area. For those seeking to cool down in the Texas heat, the Schlitterbahn Water Park provides aquatic activities for you. Most of all, sample the best of the wurst during New Braunfels’ Wurstfest in the first week of November. When it comes to lodgings, the Gruene Mansion Inn, the Resort at Schlitterbahn, and Edelweiss Inn have all the comforts you crave for a long stay in New Braunfels.

Colorful shop with artwork and vintage items on display in the small Texas Hill Country town of Wimberley, Texas

Bisected by the Blanco River and Cypress Creek and about 25 miles north of New Braunfels, the town of Wimberley is a humble destination for weary and worn travelers. The Wimberley Valley Winery bestows luxurious and bubbling nectar that characterizes the excellent wine culture of the area. Take a dip or a splash at the fine swimming holes of the Blue Hole Regional Park, a 126-acre region filled with cypress trees, Cypress Creek, and tons of enjoyment. Similarly, the artesian spring of Jacob’s Well is a popular swimming and scuba diving spot in Wimberley, as it is the headwaters of Cypress Creek and the largest continually flowing karstic spring in the Texas Hill Country. For those who prefer to have their fun on dry land, the Wimberley Zipline Adventure promises a soaring escapade through Wimberley. As for lodgings like Wimberley Inn + Bar, Prow’d House Bed & Breakfast, the Bygone, and Blair House Inn, you will feel relaxed and unhurried in this lovely town.

Sunrise Fall Panorama of Frio River from Old Baldy Garner State Park Concan Texas Hill Country

Concan is a placid settlement on the banks of the Frio River. Only about an hour and a half away from San Antonio, Concan earned its name from the Mexican, rummy-style card game, “coon can” or “conquian.” People flock to the town for its convenient and beautiful position in the Frio River, a mesmerizing water road strewn with fascinating rock formations and surrounding scenery. The Concan Swimming Hole is a particularly favored spot in the Frio River. The nearby Garner State Park and Lost Maples State Natural Area are verdant paradises for the local flora and fauna and great places for exploration. When it comes to cultural appreciation and expression, the Rio Frio Fest is the biggest music festival in town that transpires annually in March. Better watch out for thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats bursting out of the Concan Bat Cave at dusk. And remember to book rooms at Neal’s Lodges or Andy’s on River Road.

The historic Llano Courthouse, Texas

Llano is known as the “deer capital of Texas” due to the high abundance of white-tailed deer, and these majestic animals can be found sipping on the waters of the Llano River. Because the town is located where Byrnes Creek ends and the headwaters of Llano Lake stream into Llano River, one can find many riverside attractions in the area. Badu Park and Grenweldge Park are excellent locations for hiking and camping, while the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, built out of a massive granite dome, promotes panoramas of the grandiose landscape. Travelers can immerse themselves into Llano’s past at the Llano Red Top Jail, or they can appreciate cowboy articles and artifacts at the Llano County Historical Museum. About 20 minutes west, Buchanon Lake is a vibrant and exhilarating playground for kayaking and fishing. For lodgings, look to Dabbs Hotel to have all your needs and wants met.

Colorful, or as one facade calls it,

Approximately 20 minutes from Beaumont, the town of Nederland guards the rolling rapids of Neches River, which spills out into Sabine Lake. Fort Grigsby, specifically, guarded the river during the American Civil War, and the garrison in the town had to defend the pass for nine months when the Sabine Pass was abandoned. Nowadays, Nederland is a famous tourist hub due to the nearby parks and recreational areas. The Lower Neches Wildlife Management Area boasts a diverse and organized array of fishing locations and boating spaces for you to cherish the outdoors. The Dutch Windmill Museum celebrates the town’s ties with the Netherlands and commemorates the Dutch immigrants who, much like the German immigrants in New Braunfels, carved an oasis in the Texan pie. Come see more of this town, along with its many tight-knit neighbors.

The historic district in Blanco, Texas, via Wikipedia

Fed and watered by the Blanco River, the town of Blanco sits at the heart of the Texas Hill Country, where life is an untroubled and relaxing joyride. Although the Blanco State Park is one of the smallest parks in the state, it is remarkably spellbinding and striking in its verdant displays. Admire avant-garde and exceptional art pieces at the Sculpture Garden at Echo, or study the Wild West legacy of the town at the Buggy Barn Museum and Pine-Moore Town. Engage in scientific interactions at the Science Mill and be astounded by theatrical performances at the Emily Anne Theatre & Garden. On June 7, be jovial as the air in Blanco is perfumed with the natural scent of lavender during the annual Lavender Festival. Discover for yourself why Blanco is a beloved town, and stay a while at the Sweet Serengeti Cabin, the Blanco River Hotel, or the Blanco County Inn.

In Conclusion

As exciting as it might be to explore Houston and sightsee what NASA has brought from other worlds, there is still plenty of majesty and wonder on planet Earth, especially in the most charming river towns in Texas. In unique cultural oases like New Braunfels and Nederland, pivotal battlefields and military bases such as Gonzales and Goliad, and pleasant dwellings as best exuded by Blanco and Llano, one can never feel too exhausted or hindered along the Texan rivers that give life to an often-barren landscape. So, while the year 2024 is just beginning, begin your adventure in a region where cowboys roamed and rivers stream down into the Gulf of Mexico .
