Pub on main road with a suburban feel. Beers from Marstons range (Pedigree, BB and a Ringwood on draught at time of visit) while the number of old folk enjoying lunch indicates good value food. Various entertainments - and at last I get to tick the Karaoke box!

“Very average Christmas lunch” Review of The Travellers Rest

Front of the Travellers Rest, Scholar Green

Went for Christmas meal at lunchtime, so disappointing the turkey seemed to have been reheated, tasteless vegetables, the Christmas pudding was very average. The pate starter was about the best part of the 3 courses & again very average. So disappointing as this is a lovely pub with friendly staff. £23.95 for 3 courses I wasn’t expecting great things but I would of expected a lot better than what we had.

We visited here on Wednesday night. My husband & I with a friend. We received a very friendly welcome by Mandy the landlady. I had braising steak in a red wine gravy with chips & peas. My husband & friend both had the homemade steak pie with chips, peas & gravy. We were not disappointed. All the bar staff were very attentive & the whole atmosphere was very good. They dog friendly too. We will be visiting again soon.

Mandy and her team are the best. We visited the Travs for a birthday treat. The lamb shank was delicious and the lasagne mouthwatering. Portions are huge and cooked to perfection. Thank you for a delightful evening.

Called in here for lunch before little Moreton hall visit. What a find ! Great spot to eat outside round the back. We opted for inside with a light airy main dining room. Service was soooooo good. V friendly & helpful. Steak and ale pie was home made & high high quality. Loved it. Family & friends all enjoyed their meal. Beer was most welcome. Finished with New York cheesecake which we had to share !

Rising Sun Country Pub

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

On holiday in the area and had a walk around Biddulph Park with the dog before heading here for lunch . It didn’t disappoint , we both had the burger ( two for £14 - one beef burger and one chicken burger ) both were... clearly home cooked and fresh . Excellent service and a lovely traditional pub with a good choice of beers , just a shame for my husband as he was driving :-) . For just under £26 we had two substantial meals , a large wine and a pint - brilliant value for money . Ignore any bad reviews on here as some people will complain about anything just for some attention !! More

Our fifth or sixth visit here and it's never disapointed, hence the reason we keep returning. We've eaten here for Sunday roast, evening meal and on this occasion a lunch visit. With every visit the food has been fantastic, full of flavour and at a... reasonable price. Even something simple like a sandwich is bursting with flavour and not a frozen/oven chip in sight. The presentation compliments the flavours on the plate and it's clear the kitchen staff take great pride in their work. Great value for money and I've certainly paid more in chain pubs for food that's basically reheated. In the long term I hope this place isn't impacted too much by the economic climate as we hope to revisit. More

We were looking for somewhere to eat as we were visiting a local independent garden centre nearby, The Rising Sun came up in a list on search, after reading reviews we chose to visit. Sometimes as a stranger in town you can feel a little... awkward walking into a new place but not at The Rising Sun, the welcome was warm and friendly, Covid rules adhered to efficiently. The ambience is cosy, a lovely mix of old and new, the individual areas make for an intimate feel, it was clean and tidy throughout. The menu has a good choice, something for everyone (it's nice to see TA on their menu to, it shows confidence in their ability, good for you Rising Sun) it's always a little off-putting when you see a huge menu, it immediately raises questions as to quality and preparation. The Rising Sun has it just right, we chose Greek chicken which came on a skewer comprising of chicken, tomato, onions and peppers, the stack was coated chicken, bacon, brie and red onion marmalade, both were accompanied by a tasty and colourful side salad and HOMEMADE REAL chips! The wait from ordering to table was perfectly acceptable to. The presentation was first class, to enjoy a meal you have to want to eat it when it is served, we couldn't wait (but we did just long enough to take pix lol). To drink we had two lemonades, a pint of Thatchers Gold and a Pepsi Max, total cost £30.20, quality at an excellent price point. The Rising Sun is streets ahead of the chain pubs in every way, hospitality as it should be and it's great to see independent business continuing to work hard to deliver after such an awful year. Thankyou Rising Sun, we'll be back. More

Went on Christmas Day and the food was awful it took too long for each coarse to come out . My son had pâté which looked like someone had thrown it in the plate and he only had one piece of bread to put the... pate on so most of it was wasted . The main meal wasn’t great the sausage stuffing thing on the plate was awful and there wasn’t enough veg between three of us . My son was so hungry I gave him my roast potatoes . The pudding came with ice cream which isn’t great with crumble I would of preferred custard . It cost £207 for the 3 of us and what a complete waste of money so we won’t be going back again More

Thank you for your review, Rubbish!!! Firstly I would like to apologise if your experience was not to your satisfaction and it is a shame you did not speak up on the day. I know you probably didn't want to make a fuss it being... More

Having dined here on several occasions and found the food and service most excellent, we decided to partake in Sunday lunch. There were 4 of us. We were promptly shown to a table and as norm the service and attention to detail were as required.... The gents enjoyed what they described as “ best pint of pedigree in town”. We selected different meals from the menu and the meals were served in a timely . .manner As norm the food included desert were excellent. At the end of the meal we congratulated the staff for a job well done. We would highly recommend this eatery for any meal you may choose More

Having tried numerous places to eat/drink over the last few weeks, the Rising sun is by far the best in terms of ‘covid protocol’. We felt extremely safe and the staff were excellent at implementing precautions/systems to keep customers comfortable, safe, yet welcomed. The menu... is reduced - still excellent so don’t be put off! Disposable menus are being used, all salt/pepper/vinegar bottles are disinfected in front of customers. The tables, chairs etc were cleaned between customers and the staff maintained a ‘safe’ distance from the table. The toilets have signs to change to occupied so only one in at a time and hand sanitizer is available around the pub as well as at the door as you enter. If you want to eat out safely and enjoy great good then book up as seating is limited and only tables of up to 4 can dine. Maybe I shouldn’t write this review 🤨as I may not be able to book in if it’s toooooo busy 😂. More

Having heard about the Rising Sun from fellow boaters we decided to have our evening meal there. It was extremely disappointing. I had a gammon steak which was extremely tough and everything was covered in pepper - steak, pineapple, egg, tomato, chips and the plate itself.... I mentioned this to the waitress who said she would mention it to the chef. I also mentioned it to the lady who appeared to be in charge and in all honesty her response was disappointing. We were charged the full amount. No offer of a fresh meal or reduction in price. We won't go back. On mentioning the tough steak to the lady sitting next to me she said they never have the gammon as it is always tough!! Other restaurants manage to serve tender steaks. More

We have just visited The Rising Sun, two adults and a toddler; for our first trip out in 6 months having not had the courage to leave home since lockdown began. We shouldn’t have feared, Wade, Colleen and the staff were as welcoming as ever,... the pub has been organised superbly to enable social distancing with automatic hand sanitiser dispensers on entry and tables spaced apart. The restaurant and bar area looked immaculate. Staff were friendly and clear in explaining the measures to keep everyone distanced. It’s always a pleasure to visit because my wife suffers from an acute food intolerance and the staff are so helpful with lots of gluten free alternative options on the menu which you don’t always find elsewhere. Our food was delicious, we had two courses but wish we had stayed for three! We cannot wait to visit again More

We booked a table and went for a meal here last night. We were met at the entrance and after using the hand gel directed to our table. The Staff were all very pleasant and careful to observe social distancing etc Food was great as... it always is and it was really comforting to see the efforts they have made to be safe. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend More

we parked up our narrow boat and headed to the rising sun with two dogs in tow,a friendly welcome for us and our dogs and directed to a slightly draughty dog friendly table. We ordered bombardier ( in good order) then Wainwright’s ( on the... back end Changed straight away) back to bombardier . Bit of banter with manager and locals, ordered homemade beef lasagna with chips and fresh salad. I ordered a homemade steak pie with chips . Both nice , steak pie full of meat but slightly dry but counteracted by a jug of tasty Gravy homemade chips fresh vegetables, well worth the stop More

Plenty of moorings by bridge 87 Macclesfield Canal, the pub is over the bridge and about 150 metres down the road. Very friendly staff and all the COVID precautions taken We had the noodle soup , satay chicken and black and blue mushrooms to start,... all freshly made and delicious. The main courses we chose were fish and chips which had light golden batter , plenty of obviously homemade chunky chips and the fish was white and flaky The steak and ale pie was homemade and melted in your mouth. The burger was enormous with plenty of chips and homemade onion rings. Portions are very large so although the desserts looked lovely, we just couldn’t make room for them . A fantastic evening More

Fantastic food and special day Take Away menu. Had the small Sunday roast with lovely moist turkey and beautiful Angus beef - came with two different gravies for the meat too. Shortcrust pie is excellent. Looking forward to the Greek special tonight. Homemade Apple and... Plum crumble with proper custard - better than my mum's (good job she's passed on (sorry mum)! Environmently friendly. Impressed that the food was in cardboard boxes and cartons and very hot. NO polystyrene, tin foil trays or plastic here. More

Came to the rising sun pub today with my friend, I live nearby but she had never been, we were both so impressed, the menu had so many options for me being vegetarian. Our meals were absolutely amazing, fresh, great presentation and piping hot and... served by a very polite and professional young man. We both had no spare money on us to leave a tip and paying by card we saw no ‘gratuity’ option. We are very sorry, we have a copy of the Xmas menu order sheet because we plan to pop in for a meal over Xmas, we promise to leave a tip then, keep up the good work. More

Thanks for the amazing review! I'm currently in talks with the brewery to sort the gratuity option on the card machine it makes total sense! Hopefully next time you visit us we will have this sorted. Again thanks for your brilliant comments the team are... More

Well we've not been here for a couple of years due to lockdown etc. But today we wanted family lunch out. And luckily there was a table free. Starters soup, sweet potato, chilli and coconut...so smooth and the spicing gentle. Satay chicken skewers, beautiful presentation... and tasted divine, a proper chilli kick. Mains we opted for one roast beef, three steak and potato pies and got lucky with a portion of the main menu monkfish, not usually available on a Sunday. Again presentation first class, taste also first class. Deserts well lemon meringue cheesecake, work of art and a deconstructed cheesecake. Sublime and both tart and sweet! Brownie with berry compote delicious. Really should have taken photos because quite frankly the courses were like little works of art. Colleen and Wade gave usual warm welcomes and exemplary service and the young gent who waited on was so pleasant and professional we were very well looked after. A fabulous proper pub, with restaurant quality food, hats off to the chef's and the team indeed. We'll be back sooner rather than later for sure. More

We recently enjoyed an amazing Sunday Lunch served to our party of 7 at the Rising Sun. The food was presented professionally with a mixture of Turkey, Beef and Chicken roasts served with all the trimmings being the choices around the table. Everyone looked wide-eyed... when their dishes were presented. Friendly service, great food. Thanks for making our birthday gathering special. See you again, soon :0) Lee More
