My husband and I have done several fat tire tours and loved every one of them. This one in London with no exception! We really enjoyed our tour guide and it was such a fun way to explore the city. Even with the rain, our tour guide was in such a good spirits, and we had a blast.

My first Fat Tire Tours experience was in Paris, where I found their bike tour to be the perfect antidote to acclimating to the time change. In Britain, I used them successfully again, for a way to highlight London's must-see spaces without having to step inside each royal edifice. Fat Tire Tours offers a variety of guided bike tours of London and I opted for their 4-hour Royal London Tour. It showed me exactly as much as I cared to see of Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, and the rest without the tedium of traipsing from room to room inside each structure. The guide, making frequent stops along the busy route, relayed informative and anecdotal information and kept things moving at a snappy pace. Halfway through the tour, a 30-minute lunch/bathroom break at Trafalgar Square is a welcome diversion then it's back on the bikes for a bit more of the same. Fat Tire Tours is a sane and enjoyable way to see things in London and I can pretty much guarantee that you'll have more fun biking to London's sites than walking slowly through them with an audio-guide. The fact that I'm a repeat customer with Fat Tire Tours should speak for itself. In case it doesn't, here's some other details to help convince you: * Access their web site and fail to purchase and when you next access it (or before) you'll get a discount code. That discount meant that my 4-hour tour was under $30US per person. Good value. * Tours can be canceled for full refund up to 72 hours in advance. Why not book it just in case? * Tours aren't canceled for rain but FTT does have rain ponchos you can rent for $1. * 3-speed bikes, helmets, and the tour guide are all included in the price. London is flat, the ride is easy, and the experience is fun. Fat Tire Tours is a great way to experience whatever city you're visiting.

Dominique at Fat Tire Tours was incredible! He gave us a wonderful overview of the history and architecture of the beautiful Kensington area of London. I would 100% do the tour a second time around. We saw St James Park where the guards were practicing for the queens upcoming birthday in June. A very exciting time!

My wife and I took the Royal London bike tour with Jamie and had a great time. It's an efficient way to cover many of the major sites in London (Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Royal Parks, etc.). Jamie is a true Londoner and did a great job mixing in historic facts with appropriately-corny jokes. The tour is about 4 hours long, and includes a 30 minute lunch break at Trafalgar Square, which is about enough time to grab a sandwich and coffee from one of the many Pret locations on the square, but not really enough time to eat at a sit-down restaurant. There is almost no on-street riding on the tour route, so it's a very easy ride, but still covers about 7 miles from start to finish. At the time of this review the Royal London tour is only £22 which is easily one of the best values in the entire city.

Such a fabulous day to spend the day in London with a solid bike tour company. Our guide was a local with wonderful stories and knew a few short cuts enabling us to hit the key highlights of the city in the allotted time for the tour. I can't recommend them more and sincerely look forward to going on the Fat Tire Bike Tour in the other cities where they have a presence!

Well beyond expectations! My wife and I booked the 4-hour Royal London tour for ourselves and our three kids (ages 5, 10, and 13). We booked a tandem for the 5-year old, so he could ride behind us, and that worked splendidly. The tour itself is jaw-droppingly good. In a span of just a few hours, you travel in and around four parks that connect most of the major attractions in London. We've seen the same sights from a tour bus before, but this bike tour is superior in so many different ways. Among other things, riding a bike allows you to see the city not only from the vantage point of the street, but also from the park trail, which is often much more beautiful. You get some exercise. And perhaps most importantly, you get the benefit of a personal guide who connects with you and the small group of customers on your tour. They are extremely knowledgeable, unstintintinly friendly, and good humored. Everyone we dealt with was great with the kids and full of information on British and local history, as well as suggestions for restaurants, pubs, and other things to see/do while in London. Particular shout-outs to Jamie, Gerard, and Paul.

I've been to London quite a few times and I have to say, this was the absolute best way to get around town and to experience this magical city. Zipping through traffic on a fat tire bike was really fun and our guide (Nick) was flippin' awesome -- super informative, interesting and pretty funny. He talked about Kings & Queens; palaces & parliament; wars & famous battles and all the interesting characters through Londons history. You get some free time on the tour to walk around and check out some shops and afterwards we all regrouped at a traditional English pub (there are over 7000 in London) which was a chill spot and a great way to connect with the other people in my tour group. 3 or 4 pints later we were all fast friends and the ride back to our final stop was made that much more exciting ;)

If someone were to ask, "Describe your absolute DREAM vacation?" I wouldn't hesitate to say, "Go BACK to Fat Tire and take *another* bike tour of London!" Is there any better feeling in the world than gliding on your bike with the sun gently kissing your skin and the wind running its fingers through your hair? YES! Having that same sensation under a brilliant London sky and rolling past the opulence of the Royal Gardens and other London landmarks. The tour is extremely informative with an engaging and fun tour guide! Your tour will include stops at Buckingham Palace, Kensignton Palace, the gilded monolithic Albert Memorial, the giant lions in Trafalgar Square that were the inspiration for Aslan, and many more! Fat Tire bikes are of excellent quality and I felt safe and secure the entire time even if I was heavily visually distracted by an overload of flora and gorgeous architecture! Fat Tire is also respectful of upholding the law. We were told walk our bikes in a certain Royal Park. While we were doing so in elderly British man came up to our group and said to our tour guide how he commended us for obeying the law, not many bicyclists do and he appreciated our compliance. The tour also gives you a fantastic bearing for the city if you want to return later on to further explore the dazzling sights! The Royal Gardens were the highlight for me and after the tour we ate Gelato under a shady tree in Kensignton Park. Life couldn't be more perfect. London is FUN and the best way is to see it by bicycle! The tour was certainly one of the best things I've done in England.

My husband and I actually did the Classic London Walking Tour with Fat Tire Bike Tours. To our surprise, we were the only ones taking the tour that day. Yay for a private tour! Our guide David was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He's one of those guys that you'd definitely want to be friends with. He mixed in some fun facts with all the historical stuff. We got to see the Tower of London, Shakespeare's Globe Theater, Tower Bridge and much more. We ended the tour with a Fish & Chips dinner at a small restaurant that was a bit off the touristy path. I would highly recommend taking this tour. Well worth the money.

This bike tour was awesome! The gentleman leading the tour made everyone feel safe, especially an evening tour in the dark, and was a great storyteller of London’s history! 20/10 recommend!

Sarah was the perfect bike tour host. She was very informative, funny and overall great. We will definitely do this again, but really loved our guide.

We had a perfect bike tour with Lincoln. It was such a great intro to the city, for us as first time visitors. He shared so much history and told us stories as we stopped along the way. This was booked as a group tour but we were the only 2 that showed up so it was private and we really enjoyed talking to Lincoln and getting to know him. He was a GREAT tour guide. We highly recommend this tour, which was an easy 2 hour bike ride to visit the sites in London. We took this same tour company in Barcelona years ago and loved it then too!!

This was a great way to see London Parks and main attractions. Duncan was a great historian with stories about different buildings and areas of London. The riding was easy especially with the bike lanes. There was a 10 k race that altered our route, but we were still able to see everything.

London: Fat Tyre Bike Tour

Sunday, our first full day here, I specifically planned to do the Royal London Fat Tyre Bike Tour .  They had been recommended by a friend from her trip to Paris, and are really highly rated on the travel sites, so I thought it was worth a shot.  Then, I also read how it was good to do that early on on the trip to familiarize yourself with the area – so we took all that advice, and I’m so very glad we did!

In order to even do the tour, it meant navigating the Underground, with a connection and all, first thing, first morning here.  Thank goodness the London system is:  1. in English  2. clearly marked throughout  3. far easier to understand than our home system as far as I’m concerned.

Scott & Lydia in front of Kensington Palace. Say Hi to Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana!

We made it to Queensway station, and found our guide 15 minutes before the start of the tour, and it was a pleasant, and even funny tour.  Throw in a little exercise and most of the major sites of London, and it makes for a thoroughly memorable day.  Jonathan, our guide, was full of funny anecdotes for each of the stops we made, and when we later found out he had been a dual major of history and theater in university – it made total sense.  Add to the fact that he is 6’7″, and he’s even really easy to spot in a crowd!

The tour started at Kensington Palace, wound through Hyde Park, toward Buckingham Palace.  However, before we made it there, Jonathan stopped to talk to the police who had a road blocked off that we wanted to go on.

I forgot to mention, we’re here for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe day.  This is completely by accident, but has led to several very nice surprises.

The policeman told Jonathan that we could still use the road as a bike tour, but if official cars come down the road, we had to pull off to the side and stop.  Ok, sure, we can do that, so we head off.  We’re not 1/3 of the way down the road, and here come the official vehicles, escorted by all kinds of police/security/flashing lights.  So we slow, and come to a single-file-line stop on the side of the road.  Jonathan is peering and peering down the road at the oncoming vehicles, then becomes visibly flustered, and turns to us all and calls out, “Ladies and Gentleman, Her Majesty the Queen!”

I cannot even describe to you the shock and flurry of activity from all of us.  We were all fumbling, and unable to decide whether to try to peer in the windows or get a camera up and out for a quick picture.  In the end, I tried to do both, and completely failed.  The caravan was moving too quickly for a picture, and the windows were so tinted, there was no seeing inside.  But it was clearly the queen on board, as indicated by the royal colors on the hood.

So we can say, Yes.  We saw the Queen(‘s car).

After it passed and was all over, Jonathan looked around, and muttered kind of to himself, “Well.  So, that happened.”  It was quite funny how surprised he was!

IMG_3386

This included the story of Michael Fagan, who jumped the fence, entered the palace, snagged a bottle of wine to drink, lit up a cigarette, and went looking for the Queen.  By a series of shocking coincidences, he actually made it into Queen Elizabeth’s bedchamber and stood at the foot of her bed, smoking his cigarettes and watching her sleep.  She woke, and asked ‘What are you doing in my bed chamber?’  They went on to have a conversation for some 15-20 minutes.  Finally Fagan, ran through his cigarettes he had been smoking to calm his nerves.  Seeing an opportunity, Queen Elizabeth says, “You’ve run out of cigarettes, would you like me to order some more?”  He said he would.  So she reached over and rang the guards and simply said, “The man standing in my bed chamber has run out of cigarettes, would someone please bring him some?”  Whereupon one of her personal guards runs in the room and tackles Michael Fagan to the ground.

FYI – were you to attempt this today, you would be breaking quite a few laws, and the security has changed significantly, too.  So fair warning.

IMG_3409

Admiral Nelson

We then came to Trafalgar Square, to hear about Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over Napoleon’s navy at Trafalgar.  It was all quite interesting and dramatic, and a better retelling of what the girls have learned in history.  But, there were a few tidbits none of us had heard before.

IMG_3394

And speaking of Nelson’s crew’s dedication to him… Typically, when someone in the Royal Navy would die, he would be rather quickly given a burial at sea.  I mean, there’s no good place to store a dead body on these ships.  When Nelson died, there was still a 6 week journey home, so what would you do with a rapidly decomposing body?  Ick.  However, Nelson’s crew knew that if Nelson’s body made it home, he would be given a state funeral second only to royalty, and they dearly wanted to give him that.  And, well, there happened to be a keg of whiskey on board.

IMG_3437

I told you, this was a very entertaining tour!

The Lunchtime Show

We broke for lunch and everyone went their separate ways.  However, we went to a rooftop restaurant overlooking Trafalgar Square our guide took us to.  Great views, beautiful day, and a couple additional surprises in store.

IMG_3401

There was quite the excitement among everyone on the rooftop restaurant.  Apparently not many people had known this was going to be happening.  I’m sure it was something that many knew – just not a bunch of tourists!  Jonathan made a big show of joking about how this is all in a days work, it’s always like this is London.  It really was just an amazing time.

San Juan Islands biking tour, Washington

If you’re after a full-blown, multi-day adventure, this incredibly beautiful bike tour through Washington’s San Juan Islands is well worth considering. The seven-day adventure covers a total of 134 miles by either regular or e-bike, including ferry trips across the Salish Sea, six nights of accommodation at boutique inns and a tried-and-tested, detailed itinerary.

There’s plenty of stunning scenery along the route: think old-growth forests teeming with wildlife, tiny hidden coves, rural farmland and epic mountains. In fact, you’ll even summit Mount Constitution, which at 2,400 feet (732m) is the highest point in the whole archipelago. Needless to say, with lots of heart-pumping hills like this one, plus up to 37 miles (60km) of cycling per day, it’s necessary to have a reasonable level of fitness before undertaking this trip.

Ketchikan Electric Bike and Rainforest Hike Ecotour, Alaska

For an intrinsically Alaskan tour experience, look no further than this highly rated excursion from the Ketchikan Kayak Company . Taking visitors around the most scenic parts of Ketchikan – famously the entrance to the Inside Passage – it includes a journey down the so-called ‘Road to Nowhere’ and a guided hike through the Tongass National Forest.

<p>You’ll get the chance to spot some incredible wildlife, including porpoises, seals and sea lions, along the coastal section of the route. Meanwhile, the journey through the rainforest gives you the chance to see an active salmon-spawning stream, a waterfall and plenty of native Alaskan flora and fauna. The trip includes a smoked salmon meal (or vegan option) and beverages, plus round-trip transportation from Ketchikan downtown. </p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/gallerylist/101467/amazing-alaskas-most-beautiful-sights"><strong>Discover more of Alaska's amazing sights</strong></a></p>
