Sparks were recently the subjects of Edgar Wright’s new film  The Sparks Brothers , exploring their career and widespread influence as a band. The brothers also lent their music to the upcoming film  Annette , directed by  Holy Motors filmmaker Leo Carax and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. Originally conceived as a new Sparks album that would be presented as a narrative “opera” in a live tour, Sparks decided to collaborate with the director on the project after meeting him at the Cannes Film Festival.

“As fans of Leo’s films, to now realize that he would be directing a film of ours was beyond our dreams,” the band stated .

Sparks are a rock duo hailing from Los Angeles, California, USA who originally formed in 1968. The band, founded by brothers Ron Mael (keyboards) and Russell Mael (vocals), are known for being able to combine their unique eccentricities with sublime pop songwriting.

I think it’s safe to say that when a band influences Kurt Cobain, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Bjork and ABBA simultaneously in their time, they’ve done something right. Those five artists are a mere fraction of the people who the Mael brothers have inspired in their time and even when giving them a cursory listen, it makes sense. This stems from the fact that Sparks are a deeply strange band, to the extent that Bob Harris, the BBC’s general music guru, called them a cross between Frank Zappa and The Monkees. From their bizarre lyrics and samples, to Russell Mael’s almost comical falsetto, they are a sign that a band or artist can be as weird as they please and, so long as they have the songs to back it up, people will still love them for a very long time.

For that reason alone, it’s understandable that such a diverse array of artists would be inspired by them. However, there’s a lot more to this band than strangeness. For example, people who know them for their post-punk hits in the early 80’s might be surprised to learn that they predate many of the bands that they inspired. The Mael’s spent their early teens in the golden age of the L.A club scene, catching the likes of The Doors, Love and The Beach Boys all essentially playing live on their doorstep. However, as the sixties went on and the pop scene started being taken over by folk, which they detested, they started listening to bands coming out of the U.K, like the Who, The Move and Pink Floyd.

Inspired by what they heard, they put together a band called Halfnelson in1968, who got the attention of another alternative rock icon of the future, Todd Rundgren. He was a producer at the time, and after he started championing the band they were signed to Bearsville Records. Their self-titled debut album was released soon after that but it wasn’t a hit, the band decided to go back to the drawing board, and after they renamed themselves Sparks, their fortunes started to change. Slowly, of course, their debut single as Sparks “Wonder Girl” was only a mild regional hit but it was a hit nonetheless.

It was their second album, 1973’s “A Woofer In Tweeter’s Clothing”, that really got things moving for the band and made them a name in their spiritual home country, the U.K. The success of the album there led to a tour and a residency at London’s world famous Marquee club, which led to one night where they were supported by a bunch of no-hopers by the name of Queen. By the end of the year, they’d had an appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test and a record deal with Island Records. Their breakthrough album came the following year, preceded by the single “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us”. No lesser name than Elton John bet its producer Muff Winwood that it wouldn’t make it into the charts. It hit number 2, and it’s still one of the most enduring hits of the early 70’s. I’m sure Elton’s still losing sleep over it.

The band had become a sensation in the U.K, appearing on the cover of Melody Maker and Record Mirror in quick succession with their single “Amateur Hour” also hitting the top 10 with panache. By 1975 the band finally returned to the states for a tour of the cities where, ironically enough, the news of Sparks’ success in the U.K had translated into major interest. The tour translated into a renewed interest in the band, with radio play and a slot on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand in the same year.

Since then, the band have continued to be alternative icons, never letting their music get stale or samey and never being afraid to change their own format to fit their new style. They continued having hits well into the 80’s, where their collaboration with Giorgio Moroder “The Number One Song In Heaven” was a top 20 hit and an inspiration for many a budding synth-pop group. Even thirty years after their heyday they were able to play an astonishing 20 nights at the 800 capacity Islington Academy in London, where they played each of their studio albums in full on every night, before premiering their new album at the time with a sold out show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Sparks then, truly a band who will never be replicated, and we should all be thankful to have them. One to see as soon as possible.

Over the course of a career that has now spanned more than forty years, Los Angeles brothers Ron and Russell Mael have enjoyed a great many plaudits for their work as Sparks, but perhaps none as great as being described by legendary Vancouver music journalist Nardwuar the Human Serviette as his favourite band of all time. It’s not difficult to understand why the famously verbose Canadian would take to Sparks, either; their lyrical style is intelligent, witty and often highly complex, whilst their stage shows have always been theatrical, littered with the band’s own trademarks - they might well be the ultimate cult band, in that respect. They’re still a going concern today, too, with 2009 seeing the release of their latest album; The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman is a fantasy pop opera, just in case you wondered if the Mael brothers had become less experimental with age. Later this year, too, they’ll return to the UK to play their seminal third record Kimono My House in full, for two nights at London’s Barbican Centre; fans should expect a typically idiosyncratic show, with a slew of other cuts likely to be thrown in alongside the album and a stage show that does justive to both the record and the band themselves.

Sparks' performance at the O2 Institute was the epitome of power, energy and passion. Backed by a superbly professional and tight band the brothers Mael worked their way through several songs from their recent album interspersed with classics from their extensive back-catalogue. Russell's energy enthused a tightly packed audience - anyone would be grateful of even half his energy levels for a man of his age - whilst brother Ron was as straight-faced as ever...at least until his customary dance routine!

By the end of the night the Maels appeared genuinely moved by the response that they had so deservedly earned whilst the venue itself provided the perfect blend of size and intimacy.

A band not to be missed.

Sparks were the first band I ever recorded on a mono tape recorder as a kid. The same feeling returned when Sparks performed their old classics at Birmingham Institute and their recent stuff was just as excellent. Delivered by a group who obviously give it their all and give a damn about why they bothered to stand on a stage in the first place. Their passion really showed. Love them the more for having seen them.

It's good to see and hear Sparks back in action with a new album after a long hiatus.

A packed Shepherds Bush theatre were treated to many tracks from the new album as well as the old favourites.

The band were tight, the audience wild with enthusiasm for what can only be described as a memorable show and appropriate home coming to their adopted country.

Truly different.

My first Sparks show! With very high audience rapport, a super tight band and killer tunes, the brothers kept old and new fans enthralled for over ninety minutes. A highly memorable night, in the words of Russell himself before the encore.

sparks tour mael brothers edgar wright annette

For years, Los Angelenos and others who subscribe to alerts from ticketing agents have had to deal with the false promise that the rock duo Sparks is coming to town, only to suffer the letdown, again and again, that it actually refers to an appearance by the WNBA team the Los Angeles Sparks. But, at last, it’s really Ron and Russell Mael who are on their way to a theater near you.

Sparks announced a tour Monday that, while not as lengthy as some would like, will take the group across North America next spring, mostly in the month of March.

The outing follows on the heels of a bout of Sparks-mania at the movies, with the duo’s stint in cinemas in June as the subject of Edgar Wright’s documentary “ The Sparks Brothers ” soon to be followed by the August release of “Annette” in theaters Aug. 6 and on Amazon Prime Aug. 20.

The tour officially kicks off with two previously announced — and already sold-out — shows in the city that arguably remains the biggest and longest-standing home for undying Sparks fandom, Los Angeles, at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The newly announced dates begin March 11 at San Francisco’s Warfield, moving to the northwest and South before landing at New York’s Town Hall on March 28. The outing wraps up April 2 in Toronto at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Ticketing begins with a fan club presale Tuesday at 10 a.m. in local markets, and a “ Maeling List” presale Wednesday at 10. The general on-sale is Friday at 10. Ticket info can be found at allsparks.com .

“Annette,” which was just featured as the opening night premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, is director Leos Carax’s adaptation of a song cycle by the Mael brothers that was originally intended to exist as a rock opera in album form before Carax took it on as a full-blown movie musical. A soundtrack album that features Sparks performing on some numbers alongside stars Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard is also due in April.

Sparks last toured in late 2018.

The itinerary:

7 – 8 – Los Angeles, CA – Walt Disney Concert Hall

11 – San Francisco, CA – Warfield Theatre 13 – Portland, OR – Crystal Ballroom

1 – Royal Oak, MI – Royal Oak Music Theatre 2 – Toronto, ON – Queen Elizabeth Theatre

The Sparks Brothers (2021) | Official Clip

Following the release of their acclaimed 25th studio album A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip in 2020, the band’s creativity and resilience is celebrated this year in The Sparks Brothers – a new film by Edgar Wright ( Shaun Of The Dead, Baby Driver ). Premiered at the Sundance Festival in January 2021, The Sparks Brothers is a career-spanning tribute to this extraordinary band . Wright’s spirited vision brings five decades of invention to life through archival footage, animations and interviews in a film that is a joyous, and moving, celebration of the art-pop pioneers.

Time magazine said, “The Sparks Brothers, a Sundance delight, tells the grand story of this enduringly enigmatic art-pop duo .” “….they’ve influenced bands across roughly five decades without becoming conventional superstars themselves. And they will probably continue to inspire and confound until the end of time—Sparks are that inexplicable, and that durable.”

2021 will also see the release of the eagerly awaited musical drama Annette . With original story, music and lyrics written by Ron and Russell Mael.  Annette is the first English-language film from ground-breaking French director Leos Carax ( Holy Motors, Pola X ) and stars Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard and Simon Helberg.

Sparks recently released “Left Out In The Cold” from A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip. Originally released digitally in May 2020 with a physical release in July, the album was met with rave reviews and a UK Top 10 chart position.

Focus Features have announced that The Sparks Brothers will be released on Friday, June 18th, 2021 in cinemas in North America. The film’s international release dates will be announced soon.

Sparks Kick Off North American Tour at Walt Disney Concert Hall: Recap + Photos

The “Sparks Tour 2022” runs through April

Sparks Kick Off North American Tour at Walt Disney Concert Hall: Recap + Photos

As Edgar Wright’s exhilarating documentary The Sparks Brothers illustrated so well, Ron and Russell Mael, aka Sparks , are “your favorite band’s favorite band” for good reason. The duo have been making delightfully dramatic, experimental yet accessible art rock for over 50 years. Whether they were prancing on Top of The Pops in the ‘70s or blasting from transistor radios on KROQ 106.7 FM in the ‘80s, they never really “fit in” with what was popular at the time.

But last night (February 7th) at Los Angeles’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, illuminated by an array of multi-hued stage lights and backed by a solid five-piece band, they were a splendid fit.

The Hall is home to the LA Philharmonic, and its grand aesthetic and layout (inside and out), not to mention its unmatched acoustics, make seeing orchestral presentations there a truly exquisite experience. Sparks, who hadn’t played a show in their hometown since last summer (when COVID-19 seemed to be subsiding) at another landmark, Hollywood Forever Cemetery, lived up to the even more majestic surroundings last night, serving a performance that was sonically theatrical in mood and pitch-perfect in execution.

sparks concert review

The Maels’ refusal to be pigeon-holed by pop music standards kept them from reaching the level of mainstream success that so many of the artists they inspired did, but the fearless fellows never really seemed to mind. The band leaned into their weirdness as they got older, ultimately enjoying their biggest success with their 11th album, the infectious 1982 release, Angst in my Pants , soon followed by another hit, the bubbly Jane Wiedlin duet, “Cool Places.” They didn’t “go to” the latter, but the title track of Angst was their third number on Monday night, and it brought the energy of the crowd way up, especially for what’s typically a reserved setting.

SPARKS Documentary Released

Sky land No. 8 pick in 2024 WNBA draft in trade with Sparks

the sparks tour 2022

The Chicago Sky obtained the No. 8 pick in the upcoming 2024 WNBA draft from the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday in exchange for guard Julie Allemand, the rights to center Li Yueru and a 2025 third-round selection.

Chicago now has the Nos. 3 and 8 picks in the first round, along with the top pick in the second round (No. 13 overall) in the April 15 draft.

"We are continuing to build assets by securing draft capital for the upcoming years," Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca said. "An additional first-round pick in 2024 will allow us to draft yet another valuable player and add a foundational piece to this roster."

Meanwhile, Los Angeles still has the Nos. 2 and 4 picks in the draft.

The Sparks needed help at point guard, and they can get that with Allemand, 27, a native of Belgium. She played with the Indiana Fever in 2020 and the Sky in 2022, averaging 5.6 points, 4.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds in those two seasons combined.

Allemand, who was obtained by the Sparks in a sign-and-trade, will play with the Belgian national team in the 2024 Olympics, as will Li with the Chinese national team. The 6-foot-7 Li, who turns 25 in March, was drafted into the WNBA in 2019 by the Atlanta Dream . She was then traded to the Sparks, who subsequently traded her to Chicago. She has played just 16 games in the WNBA, all in 2022 with the Sky, and now is back with Los Angeles.

Allemand is expected to play in the WNBA this season, despite her Olympic commitment, but it's still to be determined if Li will play in the league in 2024.

"[Allemand] is a great floor general and helps make everyone on the court better," Sparks coach Curt Miller said. "Li is currently having an outstanding season in Turkey and will play a huge role for the Chinese national team in the upcoming Olympics. Li has great size and will provide a nice post presence for the future."

10 primaries beyond the presidential race to watch Super Tuesday

Barbara Lee,Adam Schiff,Katie Porter,Steve Garvey

Super Tuesday isn’t just the biggest day on the presidential primary calendar . It’s also the first major down-ballot primary day of the year, setting up matchups for critical races for Senate, House and governor across the country.

Voters in five states — California, Texas, North Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas — will head to the polls to decide the Democratic and Republican nominees in a slew of notable contests.

Follow live updates on Super Tuesday 2024

In some cases, those primaries could continue after Tuesday — all but California have runoff provisions if a candidate does not win a certain percentage of the primary vote. And California has a primary system in which candidates from all parties compete on the same ballot and the top two vote-getters advance to the November election.

Here are 10 key races beyond the presidential contest to watch Super Tuesday:

1. California’s primary for a rare open Senate seat

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s retirement announcement before her death last year sparked a competitive race to replace her, with three Democratic House members jumping into the race: Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee.

Schiff has led the field in fundraising and ad spending. And he’s even used some of his campaign cash to boost Republican Steve Garvey , a former Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman, in an apparent attempt to prevent another Democrat from advancing to the November ballot.

Polls show Schiff is well-positioned to advance to the November election. But it’s unclear whether he’ll face Garvey or Porter, who is using her formidable war chest to try to advance. Progressives, who count Porter and Lee as members of their congressional caucus, could risk locking themselves out if they split their votes between those two candidates.

The deep-blue state is all but guaranteed to send a Democrat to the Senate. The question is whether California voters’ choice this fall will be between a Democrat and a Republican, or between two Democrats.

2. Texas’ Democratic primary to take on Ted Cruz

The Lone Star State is the Democrats’ white whale. Can they finally capture it in 2024?

Democrats believe the state is trending in their direction and they argue that Cruz is vulnerable, especially after he won re-election in 2018 by just 3 percentage points. But that was a banner election year for Democrats, and Cruz faced a historically well-funded candidate in Beto O’Rourke.

Democratic Rep. Colin Allred is viewed as a strong recruit, and he’s led the primary field in fundraising and public polling. But if he falls short of the majority-vote threshold Tuesday, he’d head to a May 28 runoff against the second-place candidate.

That’s expected to be state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who has cast himself as the true progressive in the race and has built a national profile as a vocal gun control advocate following the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, which is in his district.

3. North Carolina’s gubernatorial race

Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is term-limited, so this open-seat race in a presidential battleground state is expected to be the premier gubernatorial contest this year.

Both sides have heavy favorites in their respective primaries. Democratic state Attorney General Josh Stein, backed by most of the party power brokers in the state, is expected to win his primary. His top challenger is former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Morgan.

The GOP favorite is state Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump and has stoked significant controversy during his tenure. Deep-pocketed former prosecutor Bill Graham and state Treasurer Dale Folwell are also running for the Republican nomination.

4. Alabama’s incumbent vs. incumbent GOP primary

Two incumbent Republican congress members, Jerry Carl and Barry Moore, are vying for their party’s nomination after the state’s court-ordered redistricting placed them both in the 1st District.

House Freedom Action, a group tied to the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, and School Freedom Fund, which is tied to the Club for Growth, have aired ads boosting Moore, who is a member of the caucus. But Moore has also faced opposition on the airwaves from a super PAC funded by some GOP megadonors.

This safe-red district is all but out of reach for Democrats this fall, so whoever wins the Republican primary is expected to return to Congress.

5. Texas state House speaker’s challenge

This is the only state legislative race on the list for a reason — it embodies the huge divide in the Texas Republican Party and has some major parallels to the dynamics playing out at the national level

State House Speaker Dade Phelan is in a fight for his political life after he helped lead the impeachment effort against GOP state Attorney General Ken Paxton. The state House voted to impeach Paxton on corruption charges last year, but the state Senate acquitted him.

Paxton is now on a revenge tour , backing Republican primary challengers to the lawmakers who voted to impeach him. And Phelan is his top target. Paxton has campaigned with and appeared in ads for activist David Covey, who also has the backing of Trump in his bid against Phelan.

6. Republican who voted to impeach Trump on the defense in California

California Rep. David Valadao is one of two House Republicans still in Congress who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Tuesday’s primary will determine if Valadao will face a challenge from the right or the left in November.

If the two Democrats in the race split the vote enough, it could allow a Republican to advance past the state’s top-two primary system along with Valadao. Such a shutout would rob Democrats of a prime pickup opportunity in California’s competitive 22nd District.

Republican Chris Mathys, a former Fresno City councilman, is running for the seat again after an unsuccessful bid in 2022. GOP outside groups, including the Congressional Leadership Fund, are working to keep Mathys off the November ballot by launching ads against him.

On the Democratic side, former Assembly member Rudy Salas and state Sen. Melissa Hurtado are competing for one of the top two spots. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the House Majority PAC have launched ads boosting Salas, who lost to Valadao by 3 points in 2022.

7. North Carolina’s attorney general primary

Two U.S. House members from North Carolina are looking to return home, running for the open-seat race with the current attorney general, Stein, campaigning for the governorship.

Rep. Dan Bishop, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, is the only GOP contender. On the Democratic side, Rep. Jeff Jackson is running for the statewide post after a GOP-led redraw of the state’s congressional map made his seat much more Republican. He’s competing with two other Democrats for the nomination: attorney Tim Dunn and Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry.

8. Mark Harris attempts a comeback in North Carolina

Bishop’s decision to run for state attorney general opened up the deeply Republican 8th Congressional District in the southern part of North Carolina. A crowded field of Republicans is vying to replace him, including pastor Mark Harris, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2018 in an election that had to be redone after one of his operatives committed ballot fraud.

If no candidate wins more than 30% of the vote, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff May 14.

9. Crowded Texas GOP primary with Trump-backed candidate

GOP Rep. Michael Burgess’ retirement opens up this ruby-red north Texas seat. The Republican primary features some notable candidates , including Brandon Gill, a 29 year-old businessman and activist whose father-in-law is far-right activist Dinesh D’Souza, and John Huffman, mayor of Southlake, a town at the center of a fight over critical race theory .

The race has attracted outside groups’ attention with some GOP megadonors funding two super PACs targeting Gill, who is backed by Trump and Cruz. Gill has also had air cover from a group tied to the Club for Growth. This race could head to a runoff because of the crowded field.

10. Porter’s open House seat in California sparks AIPAC intervention

This Orange County seat, which Porter is vacating to run for Senate, is the only competitive House district in California without an incumbent .

Republican Scott Baugh is running in the 47th District again after losing to Porter by less than 4 points in 2022. He has consolidated GOP support, while four Democrats are competing to replace Porter. The ones who have received the most attention are state Sen. Dave Min and attorney Joanna Weiss, who has received a boost from EMILY’s List, which backs female candidates who support abortion rights.

An outside group tied to the pro-Israel group AIPAC has jumped in to try and influence the Democratic contest by spending to sink Min. The group, United Democracy Project, did not respond to a request for comment about its spending in the race.

But Min’s campaign manager Dan Driscoll told Politico last month that “a number of Republican donors at AIPAC are upset that he has called for Bibi Netanyahu to be held accountable for the security failures on October 7th and Netanyahu’s failure of leadership during this crisis.” Driscoll also noted that Min “does not believe in the annexation of West Bank settlements.”

Taylor Swift Runs into Travis Kelce's Arms for a Kiss After Changing 'Karma' Lyrics at Singapore Eras Tour Night 5

Kelce flew across the globe to see Swift's fifth Eras Tour stop in Singapore after attending his brother Jason's retirement press conference

The latest chapter of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce 's love story takes place in Singapore.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end was in attendance for the fifth night of his pop superstar girlfriend's Eras Tour run at Singapore National Stadium on Thursday, where she changed the lyrics of "Karma" to shout him out once again — before they shared a kiss following the show.

Kelce, 34, flew across the globe to see Swift, 34, in concert, and she seemed to express her appreciation by editing the lyrics of Midnights track "Karma," singing on stage, per fan videos , “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me."

After her performance, concertgoers spotted the NFL star standing behind the stage waiting for the Grammy winner, who ran into his arms for a hug and a couple of sweet kisses, per a video shared to social media .

Fans realized Kelce would be in attendance for the show upon spotting him in the stands with friends at the venue in Kallang, per a photo posted to X (formerly Twitter).

The football player's friend Harry Clark also shared an Instagram Story video of himself sporting an Eras Tour wristband, and he tagged his location as the National Stadium. He then shared another video during Swift's concert alongside the caption, "GO TAY TAY."

Kelce's arrival in Singapore comes after he visited Philadelphia for his brother Jason's emotional press conference to announce his retirement from professional football . He spoke about their family's upbringing during the event, leading Travis to wipe away tears .

Travis' last visit to the Eras Tour was during the first of Swift's three shows in Sydney, where he handed out guitar picks  and cheered his girlfriend on from the VIP tent. After the show, the pair was spotted sharing a kiss backstage.

During Friday's Singapore show, Swift performed two mashups in the surprise songs portion of the set: "Sparks Fly" from Speak Now mixed with "Gold Rush" from Evermore as well as "False God" from Lover in tandem with the live debut of "Slut!" from 1989 (Taylor's Version) .

Her run of Singapore concerts concludes with a final performance in the city on Saturday. Then, she'll have a two-month break before the Eras Tour heads to Nanterre, France, for four dates at Paris La Défense Arena from May 9-12.

In the interim, Swift will release her 11th original studio album The Tortured Poets Department on April 19.

A history of wartime protests at the Oscars

From jane fonda to michael moore, oscars winners and attendees have used hollywood's biggest night to speak out, by nardos haile.

As Hollywood and cinephiles gear up for the Academy Awards on Sunday, there is underlying tension as many are torn between concern for the ongoing war overseas and the frivolity of Hollywood's biggest night.

With the widescale destruction of Gaza and deaths of more than 30,000  lives after an unprecedented Israeli military response to Hamas' Oct. 7 attack , entertainment industry figures have made their various stances very clear. Some 700 people have shown  strong signs of support for Israel  by signed an open letter condemning Hamas and demanding the safe return of hostages being held in Gaza. However, more than 200 people in the industry are struck by the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, starting  Artists4Ceasefire  and urging President Joe Biden and Congress to call for "an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost."

Hollywood has grappled with how to address the war between Israel and Gaza.  Susan Sarandon  was dropped from her agency for pro-Palestinian comments, and Melissa Barrera  was fired from a new installment of "Scream" for her comments on the war. The upcoming Oscars will certainly be a place where there will be space for civil disobedience from protesters outside the awards show. Los Angeles police are already planning to increase their presence at the ceremony to make sure Israel-Palestine protesters do not disrupt the ceremony, the New York Times reported.   It remains to be seen if any audience members, nominees or presenters will decide to take on the divisive topic on the live, global telecast (except for in China).

This isn't the first time that there have been wartime protests at the Oscars. In times of international instability, many winners and nominees and even presenters have taken the time to acknowledge humanitarian causes and injustices around the world

Here are some of the Oscars' most notable anti-war speeches so far:

Fonda won her second best actress Oscar for her role in the 1978 film "Coming Home," a romantic drama set during the Vietnam War.

During the acceptance speech, the film's producer Bert Schneider read a message from a Viet Cong official, Dinh Ba Thi. Before reading the message, Schneider told the audience,  “It is ironic that we are here at a time just before Vietnam is about to be liberated,” weeks before the fall of Saigon.

“Please transmit to all our friends in America our recognition of all that they have done on behalf of peace and for the application of the Paris Accords on Vietnam,” Schneider read. “These actions serve the legitimate interest of the American people and the Vietnamese people. Greetings of friendship to all the American people."

“Recent global events have left many of us feeling gutted,” Kunis said before she introduced Reba McEntire 's performance for her nominated song.

“Yet when you witness the strength and dignity of those facing such devastation, it’s impossible to not be moved by their resilience,” Kunis continued. “One cannot help but be in awe of those who find strength to keep fighting through unimaginable darkness.”

After McEntire's performance, the Academy, which rarely makes political statements voiced its support for Ukraine with a statement. The message read, “While film is an important avenue for us to express our humanity in times of conflict, the reality is millions of families in Ukraine need food, medical care, clean water, and emergency services. Resources are scarce, and we — collectively as a global community — can do more. We ask you to support Ukraine in any way you are able. #StandWithUkraine.”

The 96th Academy Awards will be presented live on Sunday, March 10 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.

Shawver is smartly running down the clock. Shawver has Teske nearly on his back. Fifteen seconds. Shawver knows he's a Big Ten finalist. That's a hard-fought win for the Scarlet Knight!

133 | BOOM! Dylan Shawver is a 2024 @B1GWrestling finalist after he downs Brody Teske (IOWA), 12-6! See you tomorrow night, Dylan! #RelentlessPursuit | #GoRU pic.twitter.com/HQiRgxR8T9 — Rutgers Wrestling (@RUWrestling) March 10, 2024

SECOND PERIOD: Teske chooses bottom to begin the period, and he's out quickly, extending his lead 5-3. Teske nearly scores on the edge, but he and Shawver move out of bounds. Thirty seconds left in the period. Shot from Shawver! We're scrambling. Five seconds. Shawver nearly works for the takedown, but time expires. Teske carries his lead into the third period.

FIRST PERIOD: Takedown Shawver! These lights don't scare the Scarlet Knight. He takes the 3-0 lead within a minute of the first period. Teske escapes, and he trails 3-1 with 90 seconds to go in the period. Takedown Teske! He'll finish the period on top with a 4-3 lead.

BACKGROUND: The story of 133 pounds is Iowa's Brody Teske. Despite having to wrestle-off for his spot after the Big Ten submission deadline and then being shoved down to the No. 14 seed because of this process, Teske has taken no prisoners this weekend. He took down No. 3 Nic Bouzakis and then No. 11 Dustin Norris to earn his opportunity against Shawver, an athlete he's never wrestled before in his collegiate career. Shawver advanced to this bout after an overtime victory against Maryland's Braxton Brown.

133 pounds: No. 1 Dylan Ragusin survives No. 5 Aaron Nagao 6-3

THIRD PERIOD: Ragusin starts the third period on the bottom, and he's out quickly — another impressive escape in this match. The refs will go to the review table. Shot from Nagao. He has Ragusin's leg in the air, but Ragusin works through the position, and the potentially dangerous call is made. Time to reset. Twenty seconds. Ragusin leads 5-3. Five seconds. Nagao nearly scores in the final seconds, but Ragusin holds on. He's a Big Ten finalist!

SECOND PERIOD: Nagao escapes quickly to start the second period, particularly given how tough Ragusin rode him in the first period. Ragusin still leads 4-3 with his takedown being the difference.

FIRST PERIOD: Ragusin is on the board first! He won the last match against Nagao, and he's leading the Nittany Lion again 3-0. Ragusin isn't going to let Nagao up easy. The Nittany Lion is an elite top wrestler himself, but, right now, he struggled under the power of Ragusin. Ragusin takes a 4-2 lead into the second period with 1:25 of riding time.

BACKGROUND:  This semifinal is a rematch between Ragusin and Nagao. In their last epic match, Ragusin got the win by fall in sudden victory. Both have only improved since that match, so get ready for some awesome offense, some elite scrambling and some gritty wrestling.

125 pounds: No. 4 Patrick McKee takes down No. 9 Dean Peterson 6-3 (SV)

SUDDEN VICTORY: McKee converts on Peterson's shot, and he's a Big Ten finalist!

BIG. TEN. FINALIST. Patrick McKee forces OT in the closing seconds and then wins it in overtime to reach the 125 finals for the first time in his career! pic.twitter.com/CpYpeBQgt2 — Minnesota Wrestling (@GopherWrestling) March 10, 2024

THIRD PERIOD: McKee takes his two-minute riding time into the third period. Peterson drops McKee down to the mat, and he's working for a takedown. McKee is funky on the mat, so we're scrambling. Takedown Peterson. Fifteen seconds. Reversal McKee! With the riding time, Patrick McKee takes the 4-3 win. The call is under review. The call is an escape, not a reversal, so we're heading to sudden victory too.

SECOND PERIOD: Peterson starts down to begin the second period. McKee is going to work on top. He's got riding time at 59 seconds before the two athletes go out of bounds. And there is it — McKee has riding time above a minute. This has been such a strong start to the period for the Gopher. Thirty seconds left in the period. What a strong two-minute rideout for McKee!

FIRST PERIOD: Patrick McKee is in on a shot early, but Peterson fends him off. These two guys are fighters. McKee makes another effort. Neither athlete has scored yet, but McKee is looking like he might be driving the pace a little bit more. He's pushing Peterson, and he's keeping his eyes locked in on his opponent. Peterson pushes for a short frenzy with about 30 seconds left in the period, but McKee pushes him away. This bout is scoreless through the first period.

BACKGROUND: This is not the 125-pound semifinal that anyone predicted, but we should all know by now that making predictions at 125 pounds is a fool's errand. Rutgers' Dean Peterson comes into the semifinals as the lowest-seeded athlete after his dominant 7-1 upset over No. 1 Matt Ramos in the quarterfinals, and he'll have the funky, exciting Patrick McKee next. Buckle up.

125 pounds: No. 6 Braeden Davis tops No. 7 Michael DeAugustino 5-2 (SV)

SUDDEN VICTORY #2: Braeden Davis is a Big Ten finalist! That's a clutch takedown for the true freshman. Challenge from Michigan. It stands. It's all Davis!

Braeden Davis is headed to the Big Ten Finals tomorrow! 💪 #PSUwr pic.twitter.com/1teomkppdK — Penn State WRESTLING (@pennstateWREST) March 10, 2024

RIDEOUTS: DeAugustino chooses down to start the first tiebreaker. He's out in five seconds. Davis chooses down. What a bold move for the true freshman. He's out...also in five seconds. Coaches challenge. Riding time is zero. The tie-breaker resumes with 14 seconds left.

SUDDEN VICTORY:  Good action, but no points. Let's go to rideouts.

THIRD PERIOD: DeAugustino chooses down to begin the third period. The Wolverine is out in seven seconds, and it's tied 1-1. We're headed to sudden victory!

SECOND PERIOD: DeAugustino defers to start the second, and Davis chooses down. Davis is out fast. No points beyond Davis' escape.

FIRST PERIOD: This is a fun matchup, a true freshman in Davis vs. a sixth-year grad student in DeAugustino. No points from either athlete in the first period.

BACKGROUND: Time for a rematch between a rematch between Braeden Davis and Michael DeAugustino. Davis got the win last time 5-1, but both athletes are riding all kinds of momentum right now, so let's see who brings the intensity tonight.

We're cruising through the consolations. Here's what you missed at 157 pounds:

  • Chase Saldate of Michigan State majors Michael North of Maryland to secure his advance in the bracket. He'll get Joey Blaze next following Blaze's injury default win over All-American Michael Blockhus
  • Peyton Robb just teched his way into the next round. He's looking for bronze now, and he'll need three more wins to get there.
  • Trevor Chumbley knocks off Ohio State's Isaac Wilcox with his 5-1 win. Chumbley is catching fire here late in the season!

Here's what you need to know about the consolation results and storylines at 149 pounds:

  • Caleb Rathjen advances with an 8-2 win; his result will be key for Iowa's team race for second at this tournament. Rathjen will meet Wisconsin's Joe Zargo in his next match.
  • Ohio State All-American Dylan D'Emilio is moving on after a 12-0 injury default win. He has Graham Rooks of Indiana next in a battle between two guys deemed by NCAA.com to be dangerous bracket busters at the start of this tournament.

The 141-pound weight class was one of the more interesting weights coming into the tournament. Here are how some of the biggest storylines here played out:

  • Rutgers' Mitch Moore puts up 10 points in his consolation match, flexing his offense, to take a win and advance
141 | BOOM! Mitch Moore is heading to Kansas City and secures a top-eight finish here at Big Tens with his 10-4 decision over (9) Danny Fongaro (IU)! #RelentlessPursuit | #GoRU pic.twitter.com/Zgi5LFrG1h — Rutgers Wrestling (@RUWrestling) March 9, 2024
  • Vance Vombaur of Minnesota from the No. 10 seed and No. 8 Jordan Hamdan push their match to tie-breakers, with Vombaur getting the win
  • Brock Hardy picks up a tough 5-3 win over Maryland's Kal Miller
  • Danny Pucino of Illinois also makes it out of this round and will take on Moore next for the opportunity to wrestle either Beau Bartlett or Sergio Lemley in the consolation quarterfinals

Braxton Brown is the first 133-pounder to move on tonight. He survives Nicolar Rivera via a sudden victory takedown. The Terp moves forward! Here are some other big 133-pound consolation storylines to note:

  • Jacob Van Dee vs. Nick Bouzakis is an awesome match. Let's hope we get to see this again at NCAAs. Van Dee got the win tonight 10-8, but the action from both athletes was phenomenal.

At 125 pounds, we've got No. 1 Matt Ramos, No. 2 Drake Ayala, No. 3 Eric Barnett, No. 5 Caleb Smith, No. 8 Brendan McCrone, No. 10 Tristian Lujan, No. 12 Massey Odiotti and No. 14 Blake Frazier.

  • Drake Ayala just put up nine points in less than two points of his first period against Ohio State's McCrone. He then picked up the fall. This is a guy who wants to power his way through this bracket. He's looking for team points and redemption.
📌📌📌 125 Cons. 2 | Drake Ayala pinned Brendan McCrone (Ohio State), 1:46 #Hawkeyes pic.twitter.com/3hFgAynhcU — Iowa Hawkeye Wrestling (@Hawks_Wrestling) March 9, 2024
  • Matt Ramos survives a close one (2-1) against Tristian Lujan of Michigan State. This was an escape, rideout kind of match. No takedowns. Ramos will need more offense next for his rematch against Caleb Smith of Nebraska, the only Big Ten athlete with a win over the Boilermaker this year.
  • Barnett notches a tech fall over Odiotti. That's how you respond to a quarterfinal loss. He'll get Ayala next.

How to watch the Big Ten Tournament

Quarterfinal results.

285 pounds: No. 2 Nick Feldman (Ohio State) wins by injury default No. 7 Bradley Hill (Iowa)

Scoreless first period in the final championship bout of the session. One minute to go in the second period. Hill is doing well to slow down Feldman, particularly given Feldman's reputation for scoring points and chasing bonus. Hill is doing exactly what Iowa wants him to do: wrestle tough and fight. The only point on the board right now is Feldman's escape, as the wrestlers head to the third. Hill chooses bottom. He escapes, but, after getting back to his feet, he's injured in the process of being taken down by Feldman. Trainers are on the mat helping the Hawkeye. Feldman chooses bottom after being given choice following Hill's injury time, but Hill gives him the automatic release, pushing Feldman's lead up 8-1. Hill injury defaults out.

285 pounds: No. 3 Lucas Davison shuts out No. 6 Nick Willham (Indiana), 5-0

Davison is setting himself up for a Big Ten title chase. He leads Willham 4-0 with 1:41 to go in the third period. One minute to go. Davison takes the win, 5-0.

285 pounds: Yaraslau Slavikouski (Rutgers) tops No. 5 Seth Nevills, 6-1

After a scoreless first period, Slavikouski is on the board first with a second-period escape. He maintains control throughout the match and advances to the semifinals with a 6-1 win.

Heading into the third period, Smith holds a 3-2 lead a 1:00 of riding time. He'll start the third period on the bottom. Poznanski isn't done though — he's in this match. It's all tied up 5-5. Thirty seconds to go. Riding time is not a factor. We're heading to sudden victory! Smith with the win! He'll move on to the semifinals!

197 pounds: No. 1 Aaron Brooks (Penn State) techs No. 8 Evan Bates (Northwestern), 19-3

Aaron Brooks did Aaron Brooks things in his quarterfinal match this morning. He tacked on another bonus point win to a resume this year that potentially puts him in the lead in the Hodge Trophy race, and he did it all before the third period.

197 pounds: No. 3 Zach Glazier beats No. 6 Luke Geog (Ohio State), 8-2

This is a fun matchup between two first-year starters. Let's see what these guys can do. Glazier is on the scoreboard first with the takedown, and he stays offensive throughout the match, securing the win 8-2.

197 pounds: No. 4 Silas Allred (Nebraska) beat No. 5 Garrett Joles (Minnesota), 5-4

The win wasn't pretty, but Allred got the win. His next task? Three-time NCAA champion Aaron Brooks. The match may seem daunting, but Allred has beaten Penn State national champions on this stage before. He'll have a big opportunity tonight to make a statement against the nation's best.

184 pounds: No. 1 Isaiah Salazar (Minnesota) stops No. 9 Troy Fisher, 4-2

Salazar did what he needed to do to win this match. A lone takedown an escape proved to be enough, as he skirted by Fisher 4-2. He'll have Jaden Bullock of Michigan next.

With a 4-2 win in the quarters, 184 top-seed Isaiah Salazar has punched his ticket to tonight's semifinals and the NCAA Championships! pic.twitter.com/Rv46Rro53q — Minnesota Wrestling (@GopherWrestling) March 9, 2024

184 pounds: No. 3 Bernie Truax (Penn State) beats No. 6 Layne Malczewski (Michigan State), 7-2

Truax, who has finished on the podium in fourth the last three seasons, is now up against his Spartan foe 6-2 heading into the third period. Truax takes the win 7-2 and never looked threatened.

184 pounds: No. 2 Lenny Pinto survives No 10 Roman Rogotzke (Indiana), 14-7

Pinto has had a stellar season, but Rogotzke came out of the gates firing. He put up seven points against the powerful Husker and put him in danger several times throughout the first two periods. The action between these two was outstanding, and credit to Pinto for never wavering and never shutting down. He gets through this match with a 14-7 win.

174 pounds: No. 4 Edmond Ruth (Illinois) takes down No. 5 Rocco Welsh (Ohio State), 4-1 (SV)

Edmond Ruth needed overtime, but he got it done against Rocco Welsh and put himself into the semifinals against Andrew Sparks, a Gopher veteran who accepted a medical forfeit from No. 1 Carter Starocci.

174 pounds: No. 5 Jaden Bullock (Michigan) outscores No. 4 Ryder Rogotzke (Ohio State), 10-6

We're scoreless through the first two minutes here on Mat 3. A takedown from Bullock and an escape from Rogotzke puts the score at 4-1 with 1:20 to go, but Bullock wants insurance. He notches another takedown in the final 90 seconds to put himself ahead 7-2 with one minute to go. Bullock takes the win, 10-6

174 pounds: No. 3 Patrick Kennedy (Iowa) bonuses No. 6 Jackson Turley, 12-2

Kennedy holds a 3-0 lead after an explosive first two minutes of the first period. With 45 seconds left in the second period, Kennedy's lead sits at 6-1 lead. Turley escaped to start the third, but the Hawkeye is still controlling the match. Another takedown from Kennedy in short time locks up the bonus points, and the Hawkeye moves on with a 12-2 win.

174 pounds: No. 2 Shane Griffith (Michigan) outscores No. 7 Max Maylor (Wisconsin), 6-1

Shane Griffith holds the 4-0 lead, but there's an official challenge here on Mat 3 with four seconds left in the second period. Griffith's points stand, and he's up 4-1 with less than a minute to go in the third period. He stays tough and picks up the 6-1 win with riding time!

165 pounds: No. 5 Antrell Taylor (Nebraska) takes down No. 4 Caleb Fish (Michigan State), 8-5 (SV)

This one has been back and forth for seven minutes, and we're heading into sudden victory! Taylor with the takedown! He's moving on.

165 pounds: No. 3 Mikey Caliendo (Iowa) beats No. 6 Cameron Amine (Michigan), 5-2 (SV)

This has been a solid defensive first period from both athletes. We're scoreless heading into the second period. With 30 seconds in the second period, Caliendo holds the 2-1 lead. An escape from Amine ties it, and the 2-2 score holds through the end of regulation. In sudden victory, Caliendo gets it done. He's a Big Ten semifinalist for the first time in his career.

165 pounds: No. 2 Michell Mesenbrink (Penn State) pins No. 10 Blaine Brenner (Minnesota)  Much like his teammate one weight below him, Mitchell Mesenbrink is scoring constantly. He's up 13-2 with 1:15 to go in the second, and he looks completely comfortable. That's a pin for Mitchell Mesenbrink!

165 pounds: No. 1 Dean Hamiti (Wisconsin) techs No. 9 Tyler Lillard (Indiana), 17-2

Dean Hamiti is a scoring machine. He leads 14-1 with 1:39 to go in the third. Hamiti ends this one early with a 17-2 tech fall.

157 pounds: No. 7 Will Lewan (Michigan) pins No. 2 Michael Blockhus (Minnesota)

Lewan holds a 1-0 lead heading into the second period. A quick escape gives him another point, and he's now scored more points in this match already than in his previous match. He's looking good, as are the Wolverines as a whole. That's a pin for Will Lewan!

157 pounds: No. 1 Levi Haines (Penn State) dominates No. 9 Trevor Chumbley, 12-0

Levi Haines has been on a roll lately, and he's up 7-0 over Chumbley heading into the third period. He takes the win 12-0 with ease (and 3:30 of riding time!)

157 pounds: No. 3 Brayton Lee (Indiana) tops No. 6 Chase Saldate (Michigan State), 6-5

Brayton Lee is here to quiet the doubters. He takes the win 6-5 over No. 6 Chase Saldate. The Hoosier is looking strong and healthy as he moves into the semifinals.

149 pounds: No. 2 Austin Gomez (Michigan) techs No. 7 Joe Zargo (Wisconsin), 22-6

Austin Gomez has been putting on a takedown clinic this morning. Fresh off qualifying himself and Mexico for the Olympics at 65kg, Gomez is a Big Ten semifinalist after a dominant performance against Joe Zargo.

149 pounds: No. 6 Ethen Miller (Maryland) beats No. 3 Caleb Rathjen (Iowa), 7-6

Miller is on the board first with a takedwn, but Rathjen keeps himself within two after a reversal and Miller's escape. Rathjen chooses down to start the second period, and he's out. Miller does still hold 1:51 of riding time. Takedown Rathjan! The Hawkeye has the 6-5 lead, but riding time is a factor for Miller. Escape Miller — the Terp is back in the driver's seat with riding time. Rathjen in on a shot! We're scrambling! Miller holds on and takes the win by riding time. He's a semifinalist!

149 pounds:   No. 4 Tyler Kasak (Penn State) tops No. 5 Dylan D'Emilio (Ohio State), 3-2

Scoreless through the first four minutes. D'Emilio escapes to score the first point of the match, but Kasak picked up 1:17 of riding time in the process. Kasak with the reversal to give himself the lead 2-1 plus riding time. Ninety seconds to go! Escape D'Emilio. We're all tied up a 2-2, but Kasak has riding time. Lovett races out to a 7-0 lead within the first two minutes of the first period. Rooks gets an escape to make it 7-1, but it has been all Lovett so far. That's a pin for Lovett! He's moving on!

141 pounds: No. 1 Real Woods (Iowa) outscores No. 6 Danny Puncino (Illinois), 13-6

Woods isn't wasting any time. He takes a fast 3-0 lead with a first period takedown. He extends his lead 7-0 at the end of the first period. Pucino is here to compete though, and a big second period from the Illini brings him within four points of Woods. Pucino had Woods in some trouble there, but Woods responded in a major way. He now leads 12-6 with one minute to go. Woods takes the win 13-6.

141 pounds: No. 5 Sergio Lemley (Michigan) tops No. 4 Brock Hardy (Nebraska), 4-2

141 pounds: No. 1 Beau Bartlett (Penn State) sneaks by No. 8 Jordan Hamdan (Michigan State), 4-2

Bartlett with a big second-period takedown to get himself on the board with some offensive points in addition to his escape. He leads 4-0. Hamdan escapes — the Spartan is hanging in here tough against the No. 1 athlete in the country in Bartlett. Penn State's Bartlett was controlled and did what he needed to do. He earns the 4-2 win and moves on after a battle.

133 pounds: No. 14 Brody Teske (Iowa) dominates No. 11 Dustin Norris (Purdue), 11-5

Teske has all the momentum in the world right now after upsetting Nic Bouzakis this morning in a crazy scramble. He's on the board first in the quarterfinals against Norris and leads 3-1 after Norris' escape. Teske is now up 6-1. Add some more points for the Hawk. He holds a 9-3 lead with 42 seconds to go in the second period. One more period to go. Teske leads 9-5. Escape Teske. He leads 10-5. A takedown gives him bonus points, but he'll settle for an 11-5. TORONTO, Mar. 7, 2024 – The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) today announced that the second WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine will feature the Los Angeles Sparks and the Seattle Storm playing a preseason game on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Rogers Place in Edmonton, AB.

The four-time WNBA champion Storm currently features 2023 WNBA scoring leader and AT&T WNBA All-Star Game MVP Jewell Loyd, 2023 WNBA All-Defensive Second Team member Ezi Magbegor, and newest additions through free agency, eight-time WNBA All-Star Nneka Ogwumike and six-time WNBA All-Star Skylar Diggins-Smith.

The three-time WNBA champion Sparks currently feature WNBA All-Star Layshia Clarendon, 2022 WNBA Champion and two-time Kia WNBA Sixth Player of the Year Dearica Hamby and recently acquired Canadian star Kia Nurse (Hamilton, ON).  One of the original eight WNBA franchises, Los Angeles owns the second and fourth overall first-round picks in the upcoming 2024 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm scheduled for Monday, April 15.

Tickets for the 2024 WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine will go on general sale March 20 at ticketmaster.ca .  Fans in Canada can register to be notified of presale ticket access at WNBACanadaGame.com .  Broadcast details and the start time for the 2024 WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine will be announced in the near future.  Additional supporting partners of the 2024 WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine include the Canadian Tire Corporation and Explore Edmonton.

The 2024 WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine will be the second preseason WNBA game to ever be played in Canada and the fourth preseason WNBA game outside of the United States, following previous games in Toronto, ON (2023); Manchester, England (2011) and Monterrey, Mexico (2004).

The inaugural WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine saw the Chicago Sky defeat the Minnesota Lynx 82-74 in front of a sold-out crowd at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.  The preseason game set records for broadcast viewership, attendance and merchandise sales in Canada.  The WNBA is also coming off its most-watched regular season in 21 years.  Viewership for the 2023 season across the league’s national television partners in the U.S. and Canada was up 21 and 32 percent, respectively, over the 2022 season.  The league also set new highs across WNBA digital platforms and social media engagement.

Executive Quotes:

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert:

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring the Sparks and Storm to Edmonton after last year’s historic game in Toronto, which showcased the incredible momentum around women’s basketball across Canada.  Fans, partners and communities across the country embraced the WNBA, setting records for viewership, merchandise sales and attendance, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity to once again showcase our league in a city with a rich sporting legacy and indelible ties to basketball through the Edmonton Grads and Canadian Women’s National Basketball Team.”

Tangerine President & CEO Gillian Riley:

“As foundational partner of the WNBA in Canada, we're thrilled to be part of the growth of the game for women and to welcome this second showing of the WNBA Canada Game, this year in Edmonton.  If last year showed us anything, it’s that fans in Canada are amped to support women’s sports – and so are we at Tangerine! We can't wait to cheer on WNBA basketball for another year as we move the game forward, together."

Los Angeles Sparks Co-Owner Magic Johnson:

“One of Canada’s greatest basketball players, Sparks guard Kia Nurse, is returning to play in front of her Canadian fans as my Los Angeles Sparks take on the Seattle Storm in this year’s WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine.  Showcasing some of the league’s top talent in Canada is a great opportunity to continue building dedicated WNBA fans outside of the U.S. Last year’s game was a sellout and I expect nothing less for the Sparks versus Storm!”

Seattle Storm Head Coach Noelle Quinn:

“We are thrilled for the opportunity to be a part of the WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine and showcase the incredible talent in the WNBA in Edmonton.  I’ve been honored to work with the Canadian senior women’s national team and witness firsthand how Canada continues to be out front when it comes to advocating for women and investing in women’s sports.  This game represents the growth of women’s basketball both in Canada and on a global stage.”

City of Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi:

“Sports teams from around the world know that Edmonton fans cheer the loudest, and I am excited for the Seattle Storm, Los Angeles Sparks and WNBA to experience the excitement in Edmonton for themselves!  This game is another entry in Edmonton’s long history of celebrating women's basketball, which includes the Edmonton Grads who continue to hold the North American record for the women's sports team with the best winning percentage.  I am excited that Edmonton has the chance to showcase our amazing city, facilities and community spirit as we host this world class sporting event."

President and Chief Operating Officer, Rogers Place and ICE District, Stuart Ballantyne:

“We are thrilled to welcome the WNBA and basketball fans from across the country back to ICE District, Canada’s largest sports and entertainment district.  Fans are still talking about the NBA preseason game in 2022, and we look forward to hosting more of the world’s most elite basketball stars from the Los Angeles Sparks, including Canada’s own Kia Nurse, and Seattle Storm at Rogers Place in May for another unforgettable experience.”
