Daniel Caesar Concert Review: A Showcase of Musical Versatility

daniel caesar tour review

Daniel Caesar made the sold-out MGM Music Hall feel intimate with his Boston performance on Oct. 16. While shredding electric guitar solos, spinning sophisticated harmonic tapestries on a Wurlitzer, playing stripped-back acoustic versions of his songs, and even accompanying his fans’ singing, he transcended the boundaries of genre and stage.

Music enthusiasts were treated to an unforgettable evening, starting as opening act Montell Fish set the stage ablaze. His signature falsetto, booming baselines, and flashing red and blue lights captivated the crowd. Fish even ran through the audience, drawing screams from the first rows. His high energy antics and flashy backdrop provided a stark contrast to Caesar’s calm entrance.

A brief intermission bathed the stage in ethereal white light, creating an atmosphere of mystique and anticipation. Through the smoke, Caesar appeared, and the crowd erupted.

Recovering from illness the day before, Caesar addressed his devoted fans with gratitude and vulnerability.

“I’m going to need you guys to carry me through this one tonight. Just hold me down,”Caesar said.

The opening songs featured Caesar's distinctive raspy timbre, beautiful despite recent illness. Translucent curtains surrounded him for the opening songs, and video screens behind him played surreal visuals. When the curtains lifted, he seamlessly transitioned to playing a Wurlitzer piano. Caesar’s skillful accompaniment drew on his gospel roots.

During his performance of “Entropy,” the backdrop featured scrolling Bhagavad Gita passages, including one which read “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” With a dreamlike backdrop and the constant presence of smoke, the stage created an otherworldly setting for the song’s haunting lyrics, such as, “Ain’t no stopping entropy.”

Throughout the performance, the crowd's enthusiasm was palpable, with occasional screams of adoration and declarations of love. Despite the mellowness of his discography and his relaxed stage presence, every song brimmed with energy, a testament to his fanbase’s fervor.

Fans held up posters declaring their affection, with messages like “I love Daniel Caesar” and “Still asking for Omar’s number.” Someone in the audience FaceTimed a friend, allowing them to watch the performance from their bed in a state of jealousy and awe. Caesar engaged with the crowd often, holding the microphone out for them to sing along and building off of their energy.

Caesar surprised the audience with a few acoustic renditions of old hits, in one instance admitting, “I haven't played this song in like 5 years.”

When he forgot the lyrics to “Show No Regret,” a diehard fan took over. Caesar let her take the lead. She belted her heart out while he accompanied her on the guitar. It was a touching moment that showcased the intimate connection between the artist and his fans.

His performance focused mainly on the music — he kept his stage banter minimal. With the audience's unwavering support, however, Caesar was visibly moved.

“You guys are the fucking best for real, this is the only thing I need right now,” he said.

daniel caesar tour review

As the night continued, Caesar showcased his musical prowess with a series of electrifying performances. He shredded an alternating-picked guitar solo, dazzling the audience with his pentatonic blues runs and whammy bar tremolos. The crowd came alive during “Superpowers,” raising their hands to the sky to the lyrics.

The night continued with a Wurlitzer-only edition of “Valentina,” and the entire crowd joined in on the melismatic refrain of “Play it cool.”

Caesar closed his show with “Always,” a standout heartbreak ballad from his 2023 album “Never Enough,” joined by seemingly every member of the audience. As the night concluded, Caesar expressed his gratitude.

“I enjoyed that very much. Y'all were absolutely incredible,” Caesar said.

Live Review: Daniel Caesar "Superpowers World Tour"

As the glowing lights dimmed at Hollywood Bowl, fans anticipated what was on the way. At approximately 9:26 PM on September 22, 2023, murmured conversations transformed into screaming matches over a live video feed of Daniel Caesar as he walked onstage. The anxious energy that flooded the venue was enormously heightened with a point-of-view shot. He graced the crowd with a look back into the camera, causing concert attendees to scream louder (and a few octaves higher), before reaching the main stage. Despite Caesar being known for his slow soulful rhythms, a wild excitement still filled the Bowl. There he was, in all of his glory; Daniel Caesar had arrived.

daniel caesar tour review

Tears were shed as audience members hugged and swayed from side to side, hearing the first lyrics come out of Daniel's mouth: "In the nick of time, that's when you appeared." He opened up the show with "Ocho Rios", a song from his latest album, Never Enough .

"In the nick of time, that's when you appeared."

Instantly, you could hear microphone feedback of screaming fans from the floor section, both of which remained ongoing throughout the show. Whether on the floor or in higher sections, viewers shared a natural rush and undying love for their favorite artist.

Caesar stepped out in a monochromatic grey outfit: a short sleeve hoodie and long shorts that just passed his knees. His whole set matched perfectly with his "master of discretion" aesthetic as concertgoers viewed very minimal shots of the front of his face. Backed by an entire band, Caesar's set lit up with many alternating grey, blue, black, and white tones. Smoke and strobe lights created dream-like effects, which corresponded to each song's lyrics.

daniel caesar tour review

Daniel Caesar performed songs from Case Study 01, Freudian, Never Enough, Acoustic Break, Pilgrim's Paradise, and Praise Break. Songs from Never Enough ranked first, with the majority of the songs performed coming from the album.

From Case Study 01 he performed "Cyanide", "Enthropy", "Open Up", and "Superpositon". Out of the three, "Superposition" was the only unplanned song of the concert. Right before singing, Caesar stated, "this is the part where I decide on the fly what I'm going to do". Fans experienced a surprise acoustic rendition of the track, much to their delight.

daniel caesar tour review

From Freudian , he performed "Best Part", "Get You", and "Loose". Since "Best Part" and "Get You" feature artists H.E.R. and Kali Uchis, Caesar relied on the audience to sing their parts. They delivered, even performing the ad-libs, which acted as another humorous aspect of the interactive crowd. During "Best Part", the big screen switched from footage of Daniel Caesar to pans and close-ups of the audience. The twenty-somethings in the crowd beamed while singing along, a couple snuck in kisses, and others shielded their weeping faces out of embarrassment. While he performed "Get You", the artist interacted with the audience, singing: "who would've thought I'd get you?" He asked, "oh yeah?" as a question, which prompted the audience to reply, "oh yeah, babe". During "Loose", the stage lights went dark and a piano arrived front and center. A single spotlight illuminated Caesar's silhouette from above.

"Los Angeles, I'm not lying to you when I say this... this may be the best show of my entire life, I love you guys," Caesar admitted. The crowd went berserk as he reassured every person in the crowd that the concert affected him as much as it had them. He spoke as if history was being made with every second of the performance.

As the show reached the beginning of its end, Caesar performed "Always" from the Never Enough LP. The audience sang and swayed in a simultaneous trance, all while staying in perfect harmony. The star strutted off stage after completing the song; little did the audience know that this was the last time they would see Daniel Caesar in the show. With the dim lights a perfect cue, the anxious crowd began to understand the situation. Caesar performed "Streetcar" as an encore backstage–the same way the concert began–through a live feed on a handheld camera. The phenomenal show, sadly, came to an end.

Daniel Caesar's connection with his fans remains unmatched. There is an unspoken understanding between the showman and his audience, making for an absolutely electric show. His lyrical genius regarding yearning and love create an engaging experience unique to each and every fan.

CONCERT REVIEW – DESPITE HIS SUCCESS SO FAR, DANIEL CAESAR IS JUST GETTING STARTED | SUPERPOWERS TOUR

Kevin Bourne

Despite his success so far, his is “still just getting started” says Kevin Bourne in his Daniel Caesar Superpowers Tour review.

Friday night, Daniel Caesar brought his Superpowers Tour to Toronto as the Oshawa native performed in front of a hometown crowd. Caesar joins an impressive list of hometown heroes who packed out the Scotiabank Arena in their own city in 2023, including NAV and Drake.

Before Caesar took to the stage, opening acts took turns getting the crowd warm. While Toronto’s Charlotte Day Wilson accompanied by fellow Torontonian jazz band BADBADNOTGOOD are a lock to put on a good performance, Moses Sumney stole the show. From his waist movements and dancing, to his naturally deep voice, out of this world vocal range, and his ability to play multiple instruments, Sumney looked like the second coming of Prince as he drew cheers and applause from the crowd.

Then Caesar went through his set, including “Best Part”, “Please Do Not Lean”, “Shot My Baby”, “Superpowers”, “Cool” , and “Get You” . He was joined on stage by Mustafa as the Toronto vibes continued, with the two performing “Toronto 2014” . The brotherhood and playfulness between the two was evident. It was a moment of pride to see two young Black men from the Toronto area come together to perform in a sold out arena; in their own city. It not only marked a celebratory moment for two of Toronto’s still rising stars, but the coming of age of Toronto as a hotbed for global superstars. Thanks to one Aubrey Graham , Toronto is finally learning to be a fan of itself and it’s a beautiful thing to see.

daniel caesar tour review

He finally closed with “Always” which drew the biggest crowd reaction of the night. At least we thought it was the end. As Caesar walked to the back, as seen on the video screens, he joined Mustafa and Charlotte Day Wilson for an encore as the trio performed a cover of fellow Canadian, Neil Young’ s classic “Old Man” . It wasn’t the only cover of the night though. Earlier, Caesar performed a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep”.

What separates Daniel Caesar from the pack is that his music resonates with such a wide audience, regardless of age or ethnicity. Watching a dark skinned Black man receive so much adoration from people who don’t look like him was both a bit shocking and a source of pride.

What also makes him standout is that he simply makes beautiful music, both sonically and through the content of his writing, which is in stark contrast to the hip-hop and R&B of today. Singing about love almost seems counterculture and rare in 2023. Caesar gave the ladies anthems about love they can sing at the top of their lungs (like 90’s R&B used to do). He also gave the fellas a few alley oops as men in the crowd, who probably couldn’t write a song if their lives depended on it, used Caesar’s words to serenade the ladies in their lives.

Despite the capacity crowd, the show still felt more like an intimate gathering than an arena concert, with Caesar at times sitting down on stage and at other times lying down like he was in his living room at home. There were also no background singers unlike in his previous performances allowing him to connect with the audience one-on-one (or one on 19,000).

daniel caesar tour review

The intimacy of the music and relationship between Caesar and his fans was brought home by the serene and minimalist stage design which was mostly white, including when Caesar performed surrounded by white curtains early on in the show. The minimalism was only broken up by the occasional strobe lighting and Caesar’s DC initials being shined brightly onto the crowd.

Sonically, Caesar blurs the lines between R&B crooner and rockstar. At one point, he was joined on stage by a Black guitarist who played an electric guitar solo, even playing behind his head. Jimi Hendrix would be proud.

From his musicianship to his timeless sound, Daniel Caesar is a gifted performer and a talent the Toronto area should be proud of, and despite his success so far, there’s a sense that he’s still just getting started.

Review & Recommend: Daniel Caesar’s “Superpowers” World Tour

By Syaura Nashwa (24S03R)

On 17 July, Daniel Caesar was glad to be back in Singapore after his last Asia Tour in 2018. People who seemed to have emerged straight out of Pinterest filled The Star Performing Arts Centre. Doc Martens and baggy jeans were often seen amongst the indie singer’s concert goers.

daniel caesar tour review

As the concert began, a familiar local singer performed an opening act. Shye-Anne Brown, better known as ‘Shye’, has opened for many well-known artists in recent years. A notable example is the “Men I Trust” concert this May that I had gone to as well. Passionate and down-to-earth, she easily charmed the audience with her original lyricism and wholesome demeanour.

daniel caesar tour review

The build up to Caesar’s entrance was quite a ‘vibey’ one. Songs from other famous indie or alternative artists like Frank Ocean and Steve Lacy were meshed beautifully, which frankly (haha) made me anticipate a surprise guest performer. Although my intuition was wrong, my attention was quickly diverted when Caesar blessed the stage with his presence.

daniel caesar tour review

Caesar wasted no time once he entered the stage. He opened the concert with ‘Ocho Rios’—undoubtedly a catchy track with repetitive lyrics that the audience could easily follow.  The song was inspired by Caesar’s Jamaican heritage which sparked past collaborations with reggae singers originating from his home country. “You’re my saving grace, grace, grace” echoed throughout the auditorium. A 10/10 start to a concert that continued to be a gift that kept on giving.

“Ain’t gon’ sleep tonight,  my dreams exhaust me,  I’ll be awake ‘til the light”

Initially, these lyrics felt relatable: I thought Caesar was talking about H2 subjects. Though obviously, Caesar and I were referring to two vastly different things. Personally, I was reminded of my overdue assignments when I listened more intently. Perhaps I shouldn’t have gone to a concert impulsively on a school night. In fact, I had seven lectures due that day. Anyway, here, Caesar was referring to becoming impatient with his partner and wanting to leave. This song might resonate with those who have commitment issues. Clearly a fan favourite, ‘Let Me Go’ is one of Caesar’s top 6 most-streamed songs. Elegant was a gross understatement to describe Caesar’s voice. The usage of his own voice as backing vocals, combined with his impeccable range, made this song a conventionally superb listen. Go have a listen, and if you enjoy this song greatly, I’d recommend ‘do you light up?’ by indie Los Angeles based singer, Dijon, ‘Self Control’ by Frank Ocean, and ‘Waste’ by BROCKHAMPTON.

Entropy, Open Up, Valentina, Violet & Cyanide

Apologies for generalising songs which deserve individual praise. Backed with an R&B-inspired beat, sultry tones and, well, “interesting”-looking visuals, these few songs are great to recommend to your crush. When one listens to them, artists like The Weeknd, Brent Faiyaz and Xavier Omar come to mind.  Although the music was not particularly loud or dynamic, the crowd was certainly hyped up. It was a surreal experience especially because I enjoyed  the dance music with people who had similar tastes. If you’re looking for obscure R&B/Soul infused songs with unique beats, do listen to ‘Breathe’ by Sam Willis and ‘Lustre’ by Jiwoo.

daniel caesar tour review

Unstoppable

‘Unstoppable’ was specially dedicated to Caesar himself. Expressed as his favourite song that he has ever written and/or performed, his devotion to songwriting was clearly displayed by his gassed-up performance.  The last track of Caesar’s latest album ‘NEVER ENOUGH’, this song happened to be a freestyle recorded in Jamaica. Aligning with the album’s overall message, Caesar hinted towards overcoming his feelings of inadequacy via powerful lyricism and a much more confident spirit. Check out ‘Kids’ by Childish Gambino or ‘Mirror’ by Kendrick Lamar for a similar sound.

Sparks & Swallowed in the Sea

daniel caesar tour review

Caesar paid homage to Coldplay, whom these songs were originally performed by, when he played these songs live on stage. The crowd swayed along to the beat with their mobile phone flashlights. As I took a panorama of the sea of lights, I couldn’t help but feel at peace.  The sound of live acoustic guitar and bittersweet lyrics were a great addition to the concert despite these songs not being one of Caesar’s own discography. They were perfect for concert-goers who came with their romantic partners.

Please Do Not Lean (feat. BADBADNOTGOOD)

A personal favourite: this collaboration with progressive jazz fusion group BADBADNOTGOOD tempts you to find the lyrics from Genius Lyrics (an online music encyclopaedia)  so you can sing along. Caesar’s plea accompanied by a piano arrangement and Mac Ayres inspired drum beat becomes a soul-searching experience for every listener.  This song encapsulates the situation in which one has to figure out oneself’s life, before accommodating others’ needs— a message that should be heard by those overwhelmed with what they have on their own plate (I hope you are doing okay). Even though it is something like an anti-love song, it still feels hopeful in the sense that Caesar will eventually find his way—”Please understand, I’m just a man that nearly figured out his master plan”. Although the romantic aspect is not really relatable to most 17-year-olds, the notion of being too unstable to open up to people might just be a universal experience before you get to really know yourself amidst the difficulties of life. If this is your jam, melancholic tracks which lie on the same plane as this song include: ‘people’ by boy pablo, ‘Numb’ by Men I Trust and ‘Heavy’ by The Marias.

Best Part & Get You

Featuring H.E.R. and Kali Uchis respectively, these two sensual love songs were mandatory to be included in the concert setlist. Amassing around 2 billion streams in total, these two songs were proven to be Caesar’s best work. The audience was the loudest here as Caesar prompted the crowd to sing along.  The inclusion of the aforementioned female R&B/Soul artists was very much deliberate. Harmonising with H.E.R. and Uchis’ higher-pitched and masterfully controlled head voices, Caesar took us to a Los Angeles summer day. These songs were basically sweet escapism in the form of music.

daniel caesar tour review

I’m definitely biased, but I was pretty sure that 100% of the audience enjoyed the concert as much as I did. However, a good handful were slightly disappointed when Caesar left the stage in a seemingly abrupt manner without performing his break-out song ‘Japanese Denim’. ‘Japanese Denim’ is an all-too-famous song that every Caesar fan knows. They might even scoff at you if you tell them it’s your favourite Caesar song knowing how popular and mainstream it is.

“‘Japanese Denim’, really? Do you even listen to Daniel Caesar?” Every Daniel Caesar fan, probably

daniel caesar tour review

That aside, Caesar impressed the audience by including an unreleased track that he had written 8 hours prior to the concert. Aesthetically pleasing visuals, a talented performer and an engaged audience—what more can you want from a concert? With Caesar’s clear love for music, it’s quite impossible to be let down by any piece he creates.

DANIEL CAESAR CLOSES OUT HIS SUPERPOWERS WORLD TOUR AT THE MET IN PHILLY 10.19.23

daniel caesar tour review

Daniel Caesar delivered an enticing performance at The Met Philadelphia, captivating the crowd with his velvety voice and raw emotion through a blend of contemporary R&B and soul.

Montell Fish

Hailing from the genres of gospel and Christian music, Montell Fish has garnered widespread acclaim for his emotionally charged artistry and introspective songwriting. The artist is undoubtedly recognized for his top two most streamed songs Fall in Love with You. and Hotel. His latest single, I Just Wanna Feel Your Love Again , deserves ample recognition. Montell’s set was a blend of raw emotional depth and musical finesse, enticing the audience with his stage presence. Not to mention, it was a special night for Montell , closing out the tour on his birthday! His overall performance transcended boundaries with an unparalleled sense of vulnerability and authenticity. His unique blend of R&B, hip-hop, and soul captured the hearts of his audience, making him the perfect complement to Daniel Caesar’s rich and evocative sound.

Daniel Caesar

With a sold-out crowd eagerly awaiting his arrival, the Canadian singer-songwriter did not disappoint as he took the stage with Ochos Rios . Daniel Caesar’s performance was nothing short of a realm of emotions. He flawlessly rendered songs from his critically acclaimed albums, Freudian and Case Study 01 , infusing each tune with a vulnerability that resonated deeply with the audience, along with songs from his newest album Never Enough . It was a sight for sore eyes when Get You reverberated across the venue and the audience ended up serenading Daniel for his song’s duration. Shortly after, he teased his crowd with the mention of a new album in the works.

The energy was highest when Daniel sang Japanese Denim , drawing the audience into a moment of collective melody. In that moment it was a seamless blend of Daniel’s mesmerizing vocals with the crowd’s harmonics, creating a collective of chords between the singer and his audience. What made the performance truly exceptional was a moment the singer shared with a lucky fan, who was gifted his guitar and Daniel lightheartedly voiced, “Hopefully you play guitar, but if you don’t, please learn.”

The visual experience was equally enchanting, a minimalistic display of lighting and visuals that complemented the emotional intensity of each track, allowing Daniel’s emotive performance to take center stage. The interplay of shadows and light added an ethereal feel to the concert, enhancing the emotional impact of his music.

Concert Review: Daniel Caesar

The gig was held in a small and intimate venue, which only added to the experience. At first, I thought seeing Daniel Caesar anywhere other than London was going to lessen the performance, but to my surprise I preferred the setting and location. The Canadian singer opened his set with a crowd pleaser: Japanese Denim . The song set the tone for the night, one that proved to be simultaneously entertaining and mellow. His voice throughout the concert was authentic and true to his music. It was as if I was listening to his album, Freudian , through headphones. The only difference was the live band, who arguably brought his set list to life. Nonetheless, Daniel did not let them outshine him whatsoever. On certain songs, such as Best Part (Ft. H.E.R.), he would play the instrumentals on guitar himself, whilst the crowd sang along with him. The way in which Daniel Caesar interacted with his fans was also heart-warming and genuine. During Neu Roses (a personal favourite), he came off stage, down to the front of the screaming masses where he stayed for the duration of the song. He also spoke briefly during short intervals but the focus was on the music and there seemed to be a consensus of appreciation about that. Even the lighting was minimal with no gimmicks necessary during the set or on stage; his artistry spoke for itself.

Daniel Caesar Is a Contemplative Horndog on ‘Case Study 01’

By Danny Schwartz

Danny Schwartz

At some point in the middle of this decade, the brooding, atmospheric, synthetic R&B pioneered by Toronto artists like Drake and The Weeknd reached a saturation point. One artist who helped break this Canadian fever was Daniel Caesar. His 2017 debut album, Freudian, was a breath of fresh air , a blend of stripped-down acoustic guitar, choral gospel hums and Caesar’s sheepish voice. He attempted to inhabit and observe the undulations of his love life and tastefully integrated various religious references that had stayed with him since he left the church as a teenager.

Caesar’s new album comes with a sanitized name, Case Study 01 , but it is far from the sanctified equilibrium of Freudian , even though it follows the same structure—10 tracks, 43-44 minutes. The most pronounced difference is the fact that Caesar has become significantly hornier since Freudian . “ Been sniffing around all over the town / I just can’t stop settling down,” he sings on opening track “Entropy.” Later, on “Open Up,” he brags about having sex on his piano. He’s even horny for the music itself: on “Cyanide,” he adopts a thick patois and supplicates himself to the goddess of song: “Sweet melody, wind up your body ‘pon me.”

He spends much of the Case Study  grappling with the mercurial success of Freudian , which earned three Grammy nominations. Success has seemingly sparked not only unexpected bursts of sexual energy (“Never got pussy acting like a pussy”), but ruminations about his past (“Used to steal all my groceries and now I get to the racks.”) Still, for the most part, he is occupied with the present, exploring the void that exists between two people and evoking a sense of negative space through spare arrangements and slow tempos rarely exceeding a brisk walk.

Case Study  benefits from a wealth of strong features: a vintage turn from Brandy, dense harmonies from internet-jazz prodigy Jacob Collier, tender, unobtrusive guitar from John Mayer, and delightfully gauzy synths from Pharrell. Caesar lets himself down with half-assed relationship insights, like on “Superposition,” when he muses, “Life’s all about contradiction / Yin and yang / Fluidity and things.” Case Study has gorgeous moments, but it lacks the overall clarity and focus of Freudian ; it is muddled from the very beginning, by its sample of Robert Oppenheimer’s famous Bhagavad-Gita invocation, “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” These grand, empty kind of gestures, as well as expressions of his greatly enhanced libido, don’t play to Caesar’s strengths. He resonates most when he’s attempting to make sense of the liminal emotional space where one person ends and another begins.

Review: Daniel Caesar is back and better than ever with ‘Never Enough’

Rating: ★★★½

Top track: ‘Valentina’

After almost four years since his last studio album “Case Study 01,” Daniel Caesar is back with his long awaited work “Never Enough,” released on April 7. The themes of this album are nothing new for Caesar, dealing with the ups and downs of love and heartbreak, as well as the painful passage of time. This work feels familiar as it employs many of the usual tools and sounds of past Caesar, but it takes it to a new level, experimenting with production in new ways that definitively mark this as a new era. Although all distinctively Caesar, each song on this album is unique and differentiates itself from one another, displaying the artist’s prowess on his most personal album yet.

Caesar is in love as the album opens, proclaiming “In the nick of time, that's when you appeared / Girl, I was lost, 'til you found me here” on first track “Ocho Rios.” The song is tender and dreamy before slowly growing into a drum-backed, upbeat celebration. It is the perfect opening for what is to come, letting the listener get a taste for the different sounds Caesar is going to employ over the next 14 tracks without revealing all the tricks he has up his sleeve.

The following “Valentina” is some of Caesar’s best work yet, continuing with this feel of tenderness but with an extra layer of unrequited love. Over a synthesized, trap-inspired beat, Caesar struggles to toe the line between confidence and conceit, between yearning and toxicity, a common theme of much of the album.

“Toronto 2014” brings listeners back to the beginning of Caesar's career, both paying tribute to his origins and celebrating how far he has come since he released his first large body of work “Pilgrim’s Paradise” in 2014. Over a simple beat, he proclaims that he used to be worried about the future but finally feels secure.

After this powerful three-track run, Caesar also shows his ability for swelling, emotional ballads with weeping piano in “Always” and “Cool.” Caesar’s distinctive and enthralling falsetto is on full display throughout the album, creating moments where it feels like the music is lightly lifting you off the ground, and this is especially true for these two tracks. He also dips into his lower register at many parts throughout this work, proving that he not only has the range but the skill to employ it right when it would hit the hardest.

However, Caesar’s attempts to foray into employing metaphors did not land. This weakness is on full display in “Shot my Baby.” With this song, the album took a stark turn for the worse. Caesar walks through a scenario where he catches his partner cheating on him and shoots both her and the man she was with. It comes off as an incredibly transparent attempt to ride off of the success of SZA’s “Kill Bill” and reads as a fantasy about an opportunity for violence against a partner to be justified. This track would have been better played for a therapist, or even no one at all.

It takes some time for Caesar to recover from this stumble, with the following “Pain is Inevitable” and Ty Dolla $ign supported “Homiesexual,” one of the most cringe-inducing song titles I’ve seen, both paling in comparison to the other tracks on the album. Caesar’s lyrical ability is at its worst as the album winds down, with the simplicity of his words proving a hindrance.

Closing track “Unstoppable” is where the album finally recovers, serving as an appropriate and triumphant end to “Never Enough.” With lyrics and backing music paying homage to his Jamaican roots, this track is rebellious as Caesar proclaims that he is on top of the world. While the album had its low points, Caesar believes that no one can say he is anything short of remarkable, and he just might be right.

Daniel Caesar’s ‘Superpowers’ World Tour Transforms Hardrock Café into a Musical Wonderland. -review and photos by Isaiah Stephens

September 23rd, 2023

On a rather calm Sunday night at the Hardrock Café, in Orlando, Florida, Daniel Caesar showcased his superpowers of visual storytelling and superb musical ability on his ninth stop of his “Superpowers” World Tour. The Hardrock, being located within Universal Studios “CityWalk”, made an interesting sight to see as a stream of theme park goers left and a parallel stream of concert goers arrived. Daniel’s performance, starting promptly at 9pm, sent 3,000 devoted supporters into a trance that would only be broken at the end of the show.

Amongst a three-piece band in a bassist, an electric guitarist, and a drummer, Daniel Caesar slowly commenced his performance with a surefire crowd-pleaser: “ Ocho Rios. ” This melodic overture set the prevailing mood for the evening, a harmonious blend of sheer entertainment and mellowness amongst a floor of smoke that felt like clouds. Continuing with “ Let Me Go, ” an undoubtedly catchy track with repetitive lyrics that the audience could easily follow, Daniel receded behind a thin white veil, as if a ghost had dissipated into thin air. His soft yet powerful voice echoed through the venue, accompanied by the chants of the crowd providing a backtrack of surround sound akin to a series of background vocalists. Daniel remained in his veiled cocoon for his next few hits, using his silhouette as a visual cue for beat drops and dance moves alike.

After setting a melodic vibe for the night, Daniel moved to a more upbeat song “ CYANIDE ” amongst the sudden drop of the curtains, as he stepped forward onto the stage. Daniel continued with this energy through the next few songs, moving purposefully back and forth across the stage, simultaneously pointing the microphone out over his sea of supporters. Not a single word was missed and Daniel let the crowd carry certain moments of his songs. As if his stage presence and crowd control wasn’t masterfully executed enough, Daniel had one of his crew follow him on stage while his performance was live streamed on the long rectangular LED screens behind him. This imaginative idea yielded a plethora of candid moments from both Daniel’s perspective on stage and his supporters’ perspective. As if featured on a jumbotron, the crowd went berserk every time they saw their faces on screen and this clearly strengthened the symbiotic relationship between Daniel and his supporters.

Having turned the crowd up a notch, Daniel settled back into slower songs such as “ We Find Love ” and “ Do You Like Me? ,” showcasing his skill on the piano with beautifully timed notes and rhythmic riffs, while serenading his audience. A single light illuminated Daniel from behind, creating a halo effect around him with stark contrast that yet again contributed to the whimsical yet ghostly vibe of the show. After, as he methodically got up from his piano and picked up his guitar, Daniel rolled into his biggest hits “ Best Part ” featuring the R&B artist H.E.R. and “ Peaches, ” which symbolized perhaps the peak of the entire show. At this precise moment, it seemed as though every single soul in attendance was swept away by the music’s hypnotic spell. The audience embarked on a collective odyssey, repeatedly serenading the choruses of both songs, their voices melding into a poignant and heartwarming symphony. This enchanting interlude was so profoundly moving that it felt as though time itself had stilled, and the desire for the performance to extend indefinitely coursed through the hearts of every attendee.

When what seemed like the final note reverberated through the venue, the reluctance to depart was palpable. It was as if no one was prepared to bid adieu to this sublime musical journey, and for a moment, it seemed as though the journey was indeed over as some fans began to exit the concert hall. However, in spectacular fashion and to the chants of an encore, Daniel gave the fans what they deserved and came back on stage to perform “ Streetcar .” Amongst a sea of cell phones and an ocean of tears, Daniel bid his supporters farewell as he ended the night.

With 23 stops to go of his 32-stop tour, Daniel Caesar proved to be a real-life superhero with real-life superpowers, and his prowess will only continue to get bigger and better.

Review: ‘NEVER ENOUGH’ is Daniel Caesar’s most intimate project to date

“never enough” is a poignant and introspective reintroduction to the r&b artist’s musical persona..

Review: Daniel Casear PNG 4/17/23

“NEVER ENOUGH” is by far Daniel Caesar's most brutally personal and candidly human project to date. Released on April 7, Caesar’s third studio album is a melancholy amble into the Grammy award-winning artist’s psyche. The album delves into themes like death, romance, fame and maturity. Spread over 15 tracks with a run time of about 50 minutes, Caesar’s latest release — despite its title — is sure to satisfy his fans’ four-year itch for new music.

I approached “NEVER ENOUGH” as a casual “Get You” and “Best Part” enjoyer — two of Caesar’s most well-known songs. As neither an intense fan nor a doubtful skeptic, I simply put on my headphones and played the album from start to finish on a breezy Sunday afternoon, curious to hear what the renowned singer had to offer. In retrospect, I believe this was the best way to experience Caesar’s new work. The artist’s airy synths, ethereal vocals, serenading keys and sunset-beckoning strings arrive just in time to ease listeners back into the spring season.

The album opens with “Ocho Rios,” a slow-rising spectacle of classic Caesar proportions that tells the story of a lovesick songbird, a nameless muse and inevitable heartbreak. Caesar manipulates the pitch of his voice, singing the first verse in his signature falsetto and the second in a synthetic baritone. Like most of the neo-soul artist’s songs, Caesar’s lyrics are minimal and direct, lending the emotion of the song more so to his voice than to his pen. A choir of Caesar’s vocals back his main vocals, harmonizing with one another in a fluttering tapestry of tones. The song ultimately crescendos into a rose-petaled flurry of instrumentals by fellow Torontonian band BADBADNOTGOOD before melting into the second track “Valentina.”

The production of “NEVER ENOUGH” is a standout, accentuating the intimacy and introspection of the project as a whole. Songs like “Toronto 2014 (with Mustafa), ” “Cool” and “Buyer’s Remorse (feat. Omar Apollo)” possess refrained instrumentations which allocate space for Caesar’s vocals to navigate complex topics like regret, nostalgia and longing. The dreamy chords of “Pain Is Inevitable” and “Vince Van Gogh” hug the listener’s ears as Caesar’s distorted voice warbles about existential anxieties like losing one’s innocence and desperately wanting to be remembered. “Do You Like Me?” has Caesar singing about the immaturity of young romance over a swaying, punchy beat, interspersed with distorted minor chords to reflect his love-drunk uncertainty. “Always” and “Superpowers” lean into more traditional R&B tropes, setting Caesar’s lyrics within a familiar and accessible ballad-infused backdrop.

At its core, “NEVER ENOUGH” is an album about new beginnings: The context surrounding its development certainly seems to suggest so. In 2022, Caesar signed to Republic Records — the record label giant behind megastars like Drake and Taylor Swift — officially departing from his status as an independent artist, which had long been an important part of his public persona. More significantly, Caesar had faced backlash in 2019 for his controversial comments regarding the attitudes of Black people towards cultural appropriation, with his “cancellation” largely being attributed for the lukewarm reception of his sophomore album “CASE STUDY 01”. Since the widely publicized incident, Caesar has largely avoided the public eye, taking advantage of the pandemic’s isolation to quietly participate in predominantly features and collaborations.

The pandemic also enabled Caesar to take on the role of producer, a first for the 28-year-old artist. The result is a project which is made all the more intimate by Caesar’s deeper-than-ever involvement — all but four songs on the album credit Caesar as a producer. In an interview with Variety, Caesar noted how producing influenced his music-making process, stating “I would [record instruments] first, because that came easiest, and I didn’t have to think so much. Then, I had to think really deeply about the lyrics.” Caesar also acknowledges that he’s still an amateur, saying “I’d been itching to [produce], and it was just the right time. I’m still stepping into it.”

New beginnings are also reflected in Caesar’s lyrics through a variety of forms. “Disillusioned (with serpentwithfeet)” dichotomizes Caesar’s fears about the future with his hopefulness in starting a relationship with an unnamed lover. In the song’s chorus, he admits “and I, I’m scared of gettin’ older, it weighs upon my shoulders,” before suggesting, “and you, you're scared of it too.  / So we, maybe should get together.” In “Pain Is Inevitable,” Caesar repeats the lines “Pain is inevitable.  / Misery’s a choice,” revealing that while the afflictions of everyday living are unavoidable, remaining in that suffering is ultimately within our control. This hopeful chorus, which echoes throughout the song despite the despair permeating Caesar’s verses, implies a philosophical mantra through which the artist has come to newly understand his plight. “Unstoppable,” the closing track of the album, includes lines like “Who Jah bless, no man can curse” and, “And who’s gon stop me? I’m unstoppable, yes,” reaffirming a victorious Caesar who will not be held down by anyone — even himself.

It is this glimpse into a reborn Daniel Caesar which makes “NEVER ENOUGH” both a gratifying reward for loyal fans and a worthy introduction for new listeners. The album is a portrait of our most guarded emotional experiences, tugging and tearing at heartstrings in one song while soothing and subduing the soul in another. It invites listeners to wander in the minimalist magic of Caesar’s production and wonder at the angelic harmonies of his distinct voice. And while the album is certainly not groundbreaking sonically or lyrically, Caesar masterfully manipulates his talents to produce a work that is delicately familiar while also captivatingly refreshing. Truly, Caesar’s latest album is a triumph in that it leaves listeners excited for the future of his music. In the season of new life, “NEVER ENOUGH” feels like a gust of invigorating air, not just to the contemporary R&B scene, but to today’s musical landscape as a whole.

Caesar shared his latest single, “Let Me Go,” in February, the second preview of Never Enough after January’s “Do You Like Me?.” Earlier this month, the artist shared a new video for the former track, which reached No.25 on the R&B Radio Chart. The visuals center around the star running out of a barn and through lush green hills. He will also perform the song live for the first time on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on March 30.

Never Enough will follow Caesar receiving a 2023 Juno Awards nomination for the Traditional R&B/Soul Recording category for his 2022 single “Please Do Not Lean feat. Badbadnotgood.”

The song arrived following a career-defining headlining performance at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. That set drew massive crowds and featured a surprise appearance by Justin Bieber to sing their smash hit “Peaches,” mirroring Caesar’s cameo during Bieber’s Grammys appearance earlier that year.

Getting his crowd amped, Daniel sang his songs “Let Me Go,” “Entropy,” “Do You Like Me?” “Open Up,” “Valentina,” and “Always.” To which his fans turned the venue into a massive karaoke lounge and sang their hearts out with all of their feelings. Daniel even appreciated the whole thing, saying, “That’s my favorite part of going here. Because all of you sing like crazy.”

Hear NewJeans’ Hanni cover Daniel Caesar and H.E.R’s ‘Best Part’

The latest in the group's ongoing cover series, 'By Jeans'

newjeans hanni best part daniel caesar h.e.r cover

NewJeans ‘ Hanni has covered ‘Best Part’ by Daniel Caesar and H.E.R , as part of the girl group’s ongoing YouTube series ‘By Jeans’.

NewJeans’ Hanni released her cover of ‘Best Part’, originally released by Daniel Caesar and H.E.R in 2017, on April 18. Speaking about why she chose the song, the singer said: “I really love this song. I love the R&B genre and within R&B, this type of subtle and simple song is what I like the most.”

“Something I think I really like about this song is the simplicity in the lyrics and the soundtrack,” she added. “If you listen to the music, from start to finish, there’s just the same guitar progression that repeats and I think that’s what makes the song really calming to listen to.”

For her rendition, Hanni stayed faithful to the original song’s minimalistic, acoustic instrumentation. “You’re my water when I’m stuck in the desert / You’re the Tylenol I take when my head hurts / You’re the sunshine on my life,”  she sings on the song’s pre-chorus.

Earlier this month, NewJeans released a preview of their upcoming song ‘Bubble Gum’ through new commercials for the shampoo brand Essential from Japanese company Kao. The snippet of the song used in the commercials included lines in Japanese and English.

‘Bubble Gum’ was first announced last month, when NewJeans teased their upcoming release plans for 2024. The song will be featured on the single album ‘How Sweet’, which is set to be released on May 24 alongside a title track of the same name.

In June, the girl group will also release a Japanese single album with two songs: ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Right Now’. Additionally, the quintet have also  teased plans to embark on a world tour sometime in 2025 .
