These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Great singles cruises to book and meet fascinating people

Melinda Crow

Start humming the theme song to "The Love Boat" because we're going to do a deep dive into how to find the perfect singles cruises to book if you want to meet people.

Is it possible to meet your forever match on a cruise ship? Absolutely.

An editor I once knew found her true love on an expedition-style cruise. They married within months of returning home and now have two children. Whether it was the thrill of the expedition, the forced digital detox of a remote destination or the close quarters of a small ship, their relationship clearly blossomed on board.

Cruise ships offer a unique way to meet new and often fascinating people, whether you're looking for romance or simply want to enjoy the company of other people vacationing the same way you do.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

There are single cruisers on almost every ship. Some sail solo; others are in friend or family groups. Dining arrangements, onboard activities and port tours make meeting like-minded people easy. Also, it's socially acceptable to strike up conversations with others throughout the ship.

Some cruise lines make it even easier for singles to find each other with solo cabins clustered together and scheduled events for singles.

If you'd like to find companionship at sea, here are our top tips for making the most of a singles cruise.

Tips for making the most of a singles cruise

single person cruise prices

As on dry land, activities are often the best way to meet people on a cruise. If you love to dance, go where the music is. If water sports are your thing, book a tropical cruise with a schedule of shore excursions that involve snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving and similar activities. Choose tours focused on wildlife watching, historical sites or food and beverage to meet shipmates who enjoy the same.

You'll often find other singles within shore excursion tour groups . However, you can increase your odds by joining social media groups specific to your cruise dates where you can connect pre-cruise with anyone cruising single.

In fact, there are dozens of social media groups dedicated to singles who love to cruise. Some groups focus on specific cruise lines, while others are broader in scope. Either way, they provide an easy opportunity to start a conversation with other singles before you ever set foot on the ship.

Your vessel's daily activity schedule is also a good place to find other singles. Check on the cruise line's app , on the interactive TV in your cabin or in the printed version (if there is one) for planned gatherings of singles, which are often pre-dinner meetups at bars.

A theme cruise is another way to meet people with similar interests. Sailings focus on country music, popular TV shows, wine tasting, crafting and other hobbies and interests. Not only will you likely find plenty of singles ready to mingle, but it might also be easier to strike up a conversation, knowing you have at least one thing in common.

Chartered singles cruises take the work out of finding other singles because you'll travel together in a group, often with a host to organize everyone. On larger ships, the charter will connect you with other group members through planned onboard meals, gatherings and activities. On smaller vessels, the tour company might charter the entire ship, so every passenger is single.

One word of caution here: It's easy to think that meeting someone on a cruise ship takes all the inherent danger out of hanging out with strangers. You're in a confined space surrounded by lots of other people. Sounds safe, right?

While cruising is, overall, incredibly safe, crime on board can happen. Like any form of travel, it's best not to let your guard down, especially if you go off alone with someone you've just met.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when seeking other singles on cruise ships is to start with an appropriate cruise line for your age and lifestyle . Here are some great singles cruises for various age groups to help you get started.

Best cruises for singles over 20

single person cruise prices

For young singles, cruising can sometimes feel like an expensive way to meet people. To avoid the high cost of single supplements charged to solo travelers in standard cabins meant for at least two people, single cruisers can travel with friends and share a room. (Many cabins can sleep up to four.) Also, you might feel more confident heading to the ship's bars or nightclubs in a group.

Try short three- to five-night cruises on low-cost mainstream lines like Carnival , Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean , where you'll find more young adults and more of a party scene . Singles on a budget can also save money cruising on older, smaller ships across the mainstream fleets, which typically have lower cruise fares.

Margaritaville at Sea is another good choice for quick and affordable two-night trips to the Bahamas, though you'll need to find love quickly on such a short cruise.

Twentysomethings who have a larger travel budget and wish to cruise on their own can look for cruise lines with solo cabins. These rooms for one are in limited supply, so they can be priced at a premium and sell out quickly.

Related: The 6 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Our top pick for this age group would be a short Carnival cruise from almost any U.S. departure port.

The price is right, there's plenty of onboard fun designed for this age group (great live bands, nightly karaoke, poolside games, trivia and deck parties). It's also a good way to get your feet wet when it comes to cruising as a young single. Carnival ships have many cabins that can sleep several of your besties if you choose not to go alone.

Best cruises for singles over 30

single person cruise prices

Cruising singles in their 30s have slightly different vacation needs from their younger peers. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Carnival are all still great choices for this age group, whether you're traveling on your own or with a group of friends.

Another cruise line that works well for young singles is Virgin Voyages , which is child-free and has rooms and activities designed for singles. Its cheeky, nontraditional vibe is a plus for thirtysomethings.

Use the tattoo you got at the onboard tattoo studio as a conversation starter, make friends at an '80s-themed workout class, or chat up your neighbor at an after-hours cabaret or at a communal table in one of the line's many complimentary restaurants.

Related: A beginner's guide to picking a cruise line

Single parents who vacation with their youngsters might want to add Disney Cruise Line to the list. The kids can enjoy amazing supervised programming in the expansive kids club while mom or dad enjoys adult pleasures like wine tastings, fine dining and dancing — all of which could lead to meetups with other single parents on board.

A warm-climate Royal Caribbean cruise with your best buds can be an ideal option for the over-30 set. We recommend one of the line's newest and biggest ships so you have plenty of options for food, entertainment and hangouts to try. From slides and water attractions that get your heart racing to dance clubs open until the wee hours of the night, these ships have plenty to offer young singles and plenty of places to meet new friends.

Best cruises for singles over 40

single person cruise prices

Singles in their 40s generally are ready for a little less party and a little more romance on a singles cruise. This age group won't be out of place among festive singles on board Virgin Voyages or Carnival, but Celebrity Cruises is another cruise line to consider.

The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships. Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships.

Related: Best cruise ship bars

For those who like to gamble, try the mainstream cruise lines. The large casinos offer yet another opportunity to meet other singles on board — particularly at the table games. Margaritaville at Sea is another line to consider with plenty of gambling singles on board.

For fortysomething singles looking for onboard romance, we suggest a studio cabin for seven nights on NCL's new Norwegian Viva bound for the Caribbean . There's plenty to do on board and in port to help you meet people.

Additionally, the solo cabins, which have been redone in a more elegant style than on some of the line's older ships, provide access to the Studio Lounge for socializing. The lounge has also been revamped, giving it an upscale feel with free daily snacks and drinks. (Note that Norwegian's cabins for one sell out quickly, so you'll want to book early.)

Another great pick would be Virgin Voyages' four-night Fire and Sunset Soiree sailings from Miami on Scarlet Lady . They include stops at Key West and a private beach club on Bimini , plus a sea day to get to know your fellow passengers. The cost for a single "sailor," as Virgin calls them, starts at around $700.

Best cruises for singles over 50

single person cruise prices

For senior singles cruises, all the previous options are still reasonable choices. However, some lines cater a bit more to this age group. The caveat is that cruise lines that cater to mature travelers are often targeted at couples, with solo travelers skewing older.

Oceania , Azamara and Holland America are tops on this list, especially on their shorter cruises that attract still-working professionals. The ships are large enough to have a mix of singles among the usual crowd of couples but small enough to provide a strong chance of actually meeting those other singles on board.

These lines offer port-intensive itineraries, so book ship tours to connect with like-minded folks on board since you likely won't spend as much time lounging around the pool.

For singles over 50, a Celebrity Cruises itinerary in the Mediterranean will likely include many other singles with whom you can mingle. Mediterranean cruises are popular with active mid-lifers looking to see more of the world. What could be more romantic than cruising the Greek Isles or the Italian coastline?

Best cruises for singles over 60

single person cruise prices

Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard , but also Viking and Princess Cruises .

Single travelers in their 60s and older with a large travel budget should consider luxury cruise lines like Seabourn Cruise Line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises . All of these cater to singles with reduced supplement charges and singles meet-and-greets.

Visit the maitre d' on the first day of your cruise to ensure you are seated at the same table or group of tables with other singles for dinner in the main dining room. Dance classes, trivia games and port tours also put you in the right place at the right time to strike up conversations with others looking to make new connections. Social hostesses on luxury lines can introduce you to other solo travelers, too.

Related: Why it's easier to meet new people on a smaller cruise ship

River cruises in Europe are another possibility for singles in this age group. River cruises are inherently social, in part because of the small size of the ships, but also because daily tours put people with shared interests in proximity during walking and bus excursions. There are also choices of specialty theme cruises for LGBTQ+ cruisers , wine lovers, golfers and ancestry seekers, all of which make it easier for singles to meet people on board.

Lines to consider include AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises, Avalon River Cruises, Emerald Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises. River cruises also sometimes offer reduced single supplements, making them more affordable for those traveling alone.

A top pick for this age group would be an Alaska sailing on Silversea Cruises. This luxury line includes everything in one fare — even many fabulous Alaska excursions you would pay hundreds of dollars for on any other line. The ships are small enough that you can easily meet your fellow travelers, and the excursions make it easy to share experiences with other singles on board.

Bottom line

The romance of a cruise is undeniable. From dressy dinners to the moon's glow on the ocean waves, cruising can feel like a setting straight from a Hollywood film. Though not as simple as swiping right, cruising to meet other singles has appeal.

Choosing the right cruise line and activities can help you narrow your potential candidates. Looking for an outdoor adventurer? Choose active tours in port. Want to share your love of music, wine or Blackjack with someone? Pick a theme cruise focused on your passion.

If you just want to dance the night away with singles in your own age group, there's a ship for you — whether your jam is rock 'n' roll, hip hop or a classic waltz.

Also, you lose nothing by trying. Even if you don't meet the partner of your dreams, you'll enjoy a fantastic cruise vacation.

The Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travelers

Solo cruising has never been this good. Not only are more cruise lines adding solo cabins, but the single-traveler cabins aboard ships are also getting more spacious and luxurious.

And just because a cruise line doesn’t offer a solo cabin doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to pay more to cruise alone, either. Some cruise lines waive or reduce single supplements that can double a solo traveler’s bill. These deals become especially frequent during the first quarter of the year,  a discount period known as “ wave season .”

River cruise lines are being especially savvy in courting solo travelers by “offering more attractive opportunities for those who like to travel in style by themselves,” says Joshua Harrell, chief marketing officer for the WorldVia Travel Group and the Travel Quest Network.

Whichever cruise line you choose, you’ll want to book early: The travel insurance search engine Squaremouth says its sales show a 64 percent increase in solo cruise travel this year from 2019.

Here's everything you need to know about single bookings aboard some of the best lines for solo cruisers.

All cruises featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you book something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian debuted a studio cabin in 2010 and was the first major cruise line to create accommodations for one. These cabins come in at just under 100 square feet—enough space for a full bed. They don’t offer sea views, but the cruise line does include access to a lounge where they can meet other solo travelers over snacks.

Norwegian's solo cabins are now on several ships, including the Norwegian Epi c, Norwegian Breakaway , Pride of America , and Norwegian Prima , which is set to debut this summer.

Holland America

Holland America's solo cabins are larger than Norwegian's, but you'll have to settle for a twin bed. Still, solo cruisers on Holland America’s Koningsdam , Niewuw Statendam , Rotterdam , and Ryndam ships can expect between 127 and 172 square feet of space onboard.

Best of all, each of Holland America’s solo suites comes with an ocean view.

Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas. Pool Deck

The pool deck on board Royal Caribbean's new Odyssey of the Seas ship

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has more single cruise cabins than the average cruise line. Half of the ships in its fleet offer solo cabins, but if you’re looking for a private balcony, you’ll want to book the Anthem of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas , Harmony of the Seas , Spectrum of the Seas or the line's newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas .

In addition to a private balcony that's perfect for sipping morning coffee, each of the single suites on these ships are nearly 200 square feet.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania is taking solo cruising to a whole new level with its newest solo suites. Its latest ship, Vista , debuting in 2023, includes six 270-square-foot solo cabins, each with a balcony and amenities including free laundry, room service, premium lounge access, and a bottle of Champagne. Each cabin features a memory foam bed, a separate seating area, and a private balcony.

The line is planning to add solo cabins to several additional ships this year, giving travelers even more options to sail solo.

Celebrity Cruises

If you're a solo cruiser who's in it for the view and not the private balcony, check out Celebrity Cruises' Infinite Veranda solo cabins. These cabins feature giant windows that create a space similar to a sunroom.

Infinite Veranda cabins are available on Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex , and the new Celebrity Beyond . Each ship has a range of single cabins: Celebrity Edge has 16 of them, while Celebrity Beyond has double that, with 32 solo rooms.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Atlas Ocean Voyages doesn’t just give solo travelers their own suite—it also gives them butler service.

Atlas' first solo suites hit the seas this year onboard its debut ship, World Navigator . Each suite clocks in at just over 180 square feet and comes equipped with a queen-size bed, a 42-inch TV, and a shower complete with L'Occitane bath products. There's even a separate closet just for your shoes.

Cunard Line

If you're looking to make a transatlantic voyage, Cunard offers solo cabins on the Queen Mary 2 , the iconic ship known for its transatlantic crossings between London and New York. Although they only offer a twin-size bed, solo suites onboard the Queen Mary 2 are around 180 square feet and include ocean views. Two other Cunard ships, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria , also offer single cabins, but some are interior rooms without ocean views.

This luxury cruise line doesn’t offer solo suites, but it also doesn’t charge solo cruisers double the price to book a cabin of their own.

Silversea, an all-inclusive cruise line known for its small, opulent ships and its discerning butler service, caps its single supplement at 25 percent of the cruise fare on select voyages. Of course, you’ll want to book early: Silversea’s solo cruise rates go up as departure dates get closer.

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways' AmaCello features solo cabins

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways has four ships with solo cabins: AmaDolce , AmaDante , AmaLyra , and AmaCello , which all sail European itineraries. On other ships, single supplements are 25 percent of the cruise fare for itineraries in Europe and Asia.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways waives single supplements on its European river cruises and on some itineraries in southeast Asia. About 10 percent of Avalon passengers are solo cruisers, but you’ll want to book early to join them. Only a portion of each ship’s staterooms are reserved for solo cruisers on each itinerary.

Solo Cruises: The Ultimate Guide to Cruising Solo

Last updated: April 26th, 2023

Woman on a cruise

  • Find a Cruise

A solo cruise is an excellent vacation choice if you’re looking to experience exciting destinations around the world and make new friends along the way.

Sometimes you don’t want to wait to see a destination until you have a travel partner who can go with you. Maybe you just like the introspective time that a solo vacation can provide.

Traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to rough it, backpack, or do all the planning yourself.

If you’re considering taking a cruise vacation by yourself, here are some solo cruise tips to help make your journey an unforgettable experience.

Choose a Cruise Line That’s Solo-Friendly

Not all cruise lines are the same. If you’re planning your much-deserved vacation and you want to travel solo, pick a line that welcomes single travelers.

Celebrity Cruises has beautiful single staterooms, many with a private veranda, and offers hosted social events for solo travelers.

You’ll find a vast range of excursions on offer, many of which are the perfect bonding opportunity for anybody looking to make new friends, and a safe, inclusive environment on board.

Bartender putting on a show at the Martini Bar

Martini Bar

The spas and fitness facilities on board are second to none. There’s dazzling entertainment on every ship, whether you want to take a front row seat at the Martini Bar and watch the mixologists at work, or take in one of our state-of-the-art shows.

Celebrity is also one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cruise lines in the business, too.

All this adds up to Celebrity Cruises being the perfect choice for solo travelers, something that has been recognized by the travel industry. Celebrity was the proud winner of the 2022 Solo Traveler Magellan Award, presented by leading travel industry publication Travel Weekly.

Single Staterooms on Celebrity Silhouette and all Edge-series Ships

Celebrity Apex

With every new ship, Celebrity has added more staterooms to its fleet that are solo-traveler friendly – and many of them have a private veranda, too. Don’t miss out on a trip of a lifetime because you don’t have a travel partner who can go with you.

Celebrity Beyond has 32 solo staterooms with an Infinite Veranda, as does the new Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Apex features 24, while Celebrity Edge is home to 16 solo staterooms. Celebrity Silhouette will also have 4 inside single staterooms perfect for solo guests.

These single staterooms start at 131 square feet, giving you plenty of space to move around. Not only are single staterooms spacious, but they’re also outfitted with the same modern, sleek design and luxurious amenities as all staterooms on Celebrity’s ships.

On Edge-series ships, the larger single stateroom with infinite veranda is perfect for solo cruise guests, a generous 184 square feet including the veranda space.

The infinite veranda isn’t like a normal cruise ship balcony. With the push of a button, the doors to your veranda seamlessly open and fold into the sides of the room, bringing the outdoors in, making it perfect for those who love to soak up the sun and the views from their own private space.

What Are The Best Cruises For Solo Travelers?

View of the Sky Lounge

The best cruises for solo travelers depend on the experiences you most want out of a vacation.

Are you a thrill-seeker looking to cross items off your bucket list? Want to see the capital cities of Europe without hotel-hopping and planning all your own accommodations and train travel? Are you more interested in hiking or history?

Celebrity has crafted different itineraries for travelers of all kinds, from introverts who prefer fewer social activities to extroverts who thrive on meeting new people.

Man snorkeling in St Croix

Craving time in the sun against the backdrop of white sand beaches and crystalline waters? Consider a 7- or 10-night Caribbean cruise , where snorkeling and diving shore excursions are bound to introduce you to people with similar interests and a sense of adventure.

If you’re a history buff, tour thousand-year-old churches in Italy or see the ancient ruins of Greece up close.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Islands

Or choose the Galapagos Islands, where you’ll share life-affirming adventures with fellow travelers every day, gathering together in the evenings to swap stories.

There is no shortage of options for cruisers who are traveling solo.

What About Solo Cruises For Seniors?

Old man hiking with backpack on

On a cruise, seniors can enjoy a worry-free vacation featuring world-class accommodations and a travel experience tailored to their interests.

Celebrity’s cruises have onboard activities to suit everyone, from thrilling entertainment and live music to guest speaker series and guided meditations.

On solo cruises for seniors , accessible staterooms and excursions for all types of mobility levels ensure guests see as much of the world as they desire.

Tips For Making New Friends During Your Solo Cruise

People hanging out at Craft Social

Craft Social

Just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone, unless you want to be, of course. Here are a few ways to make friends—and memories—onboard.

Get to Know the Crew During Your Solo Cruise

One of the best things about sailing with Celebrity is the friendly, engaging crew from all around the world. Many guests enjoy talking with them and learning about the area of the globe they’re from.

Bartender crafting drinks

World Class Bar

Finding a bartender you get along with so you can have your own “local” bar on the ship is an easy way to feel comfortable in a lounge while cruising solo.

Get to know your cruise director, who you’ll often see walking around the ship. If they know you’re a solo cruise passenger, they may give you some insider tips on upcoming activities or entertainment you won’t want to miss.

Join New, Dedicated Events for Solo Travelers

View of Eden aboard Celebrity Cruises

Meet fellow solos in a friendly environment at Celebrity Cruises’ new Solo Travelers’ Gathering and Dinner, hosted by the Activity Team.

Check the time in your Celebrity App or Celebrity Today daily program and head for the Sky Lounge (on Millennium and Solstice-series ships) or luscious Eden on Edge-series ships, where you can meet fellow solo travelers. The friendly Activity Team will help break the ice.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

The Shore Excursions team will be present to facilitate bookings should you meet a potential buddy to join you for excursions.

There will also be a special solos’ table at dinner that night, and an unhosted solos’ table every night thereafter for anybody who is enjoying the company of new friends for dinner. This is the perfect opportunity to get together with other people traveling solo.

Get Out & Mingle

You might be tempted to unwind in your stateroom after busy days ashore. However, spending time in public spaces on the ship is a great way to meet new people.

People hanging out at night on a cruise

Celebrity Edge

Strike up a conversation and make some new friends on the very first night of the cruise. Perch at the bar for drinks if you feel awkward sitting alone at a table. Get chatting on shore excursions, and join group activities on board.

Celebrity’s ships are equipped with high-speed WiFi so it’s easy and convenient to start a WhatsApp group to arrange activities and meet-ups with newfound friends.

People playing casino

Say Yes to Dining With New People

Joining people for dinner is a great way to make friends and have a fun meal at the Main Restaurant or in a specialty restaurant.

People laughing while eating

People will likely be intrigued by you traveling on your own, want to get to know you better, and enhance their own dining experience. Even couples like to socialize and meet new people on vacation. Since you’re all travelers who enjoy seeing the world, it’s easy to swap travel stories.

The solos’ table is also always an option. Sitting here is a great way to meet other adventurous solo travelers and swap stories.

Opt for an Assigned Seating Time for Dinner

As a solo cruise traveler, you may benefit more from doing a traditional assigned seating time instead of dining at different times.

With an assigned seating time, you’ll be sat at the same table each night with other cruise passengers and the same crew waiting on you. It will give you some familiarity as your tablemates, server, and sommelier get to know you and your dining preferences—and sparkling personality!

Woman raising glass for a toast

If you don’t feel totally compatible with the other folks at your table, talk to the maître d’ and ask for a different table.

If you’re seated at a table on your own and feel self-conscious, have a book or journal on hand. A journal is a lovely way to pass the time at dinner, giving you the opportunity to reflect on the day and write about all the amazing things you saw in port or did on the ship.

Book Shore Excursions Through the Cruise Line

People on a train in Alaska

Celebrity’s shore excursions highlight the best parts of a destination and provide unforgettable experiences. Bond with fellow passengers by exploring the port together. You’ll have the chance to run into them again on the ship for more fun and conversation.

When you book a shore excursion, you know you’ll be spending your day surrounded by other travelers on your ship. Most ports have multiple ships calling at them each day, so it’s better to spend the day making new friends with people who will board your ship at the end of the day.

Woman preparing for a zipline

Choose an excursion that features a hands-on activity. This gets people out of their element and provides easy conversation starters.

Chatting with others while hiking through a rainforest or waiting on a zip-lining platform can lead to fun conversations. Choosing a tour like a wine tasting or a cooking class is a great way to break the ice with fellow passengers.

Bus tour in San Francisco, California

San Francisco, California

If you go on a sightseeing shore excursion on a bus, try to sit up near the front so you’re close to the guide. They’ll usually be open to conversations and are a wealth of knowledge on the destination you’re visiting.

You can ask questions and also learn about what it’s like to live there. It’s a way to have some socialization throughout your solo cruise day in port while also learning more about the city or town you’re visiting.

People walking to the boat for an excursion

The best part? All the details are taken care of for you. You’ll be conveniently guided right to your shore excursion transportation from the ship. You’re guaranteed to be back to the ship in time before it leaves for the next port.

Take Classes Onboard

Sommelier discussing wine to guests

Cellar Masters

Join in beverage and culinary programs on board and mingle with like-minded passengers who, like you, appreciate a glass of fine wine or an expertly prepared meal. Onboard classes and seminars give you the chance to see cooking demonstrations, learn about the art of wine tasting, and more. You can even create your own wine blend onboard.

If wine isn’t your thing, you can learn the art of bartending in a Mixology 101 class. Sample a martini flight at the Martini Bar. Into whisky? Try the Macallan Flight Experience, which lets you taste a trio of whiskies. Or join one of the gaming classes in the casino; once you’re confident to try your luck at the tables, it’s easy to strike up a conversation.

Yoga class aboard Celebrity Cruises

If you like to work out, the classes at the Fitness Center are a great way to meet like-minded travelers. Workout classes on cruise ships tend to attract a core of enthusiasts, after the initial well-intentioned rush during the first day of the cruise, and you could find yourself making plans to meet new friends every day for yoga, or F45.

How much is a cruise cost for 1 person?

Looking to set sail on your own? Find out how much a cruise for one person will cost you, including factors like destination, duration, and cabin type.

Book Your First Cruise

Cruising is one of the most thrilling and adventurous ways to travel, with millions of people embarking on cruises each year. Whether you're a solo traveler or simply prefer to travel alone, you might be wondering how much it costs to go on a cruise for one person.

How much will it cost if I travel alone on a cruise?

The cost of a cruise can vary widely depending on a number of factors, including the cruise line, the itinerary, the length of the cruise, the type of cabin you choose, and the time of year you choose to travel. In this article, we'll take a closer look at some of these factors and help you understand how much you can expect to pay for a cruise as a solo traveler.

Choosing a cruise length

The length of the cruise is one of the primary factors that can impact the cost of a solo cruise . Generally, the longer the cruise, the more expensive it will be. This is because longer cruises often visit multiple cruise destinations , require more fuel and supplies, and offer more onboard amenities and entertainment options.

A short three to four-night cruise can start from as low as $200 - $300 per person for an inside cabin, while a week-long cruise can cost anywhere from $500 - $1500 per person, depending on the cruise line, the destination, and the type of cabin. Longer cruises, such as those that last two weeks or more, can cost $5000 or more per person.

Choosing a cruise line

The first factor to consider when looking at the cost of a cruise for one person is the cruise line you choose. There are dozens of cruise lines to choose from, each with its own style, amenities, and price point. Some of the most popular cruise lines for solo travelers include Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line , and Holland America Line .

  • Royal Caribbean is a great choice for solo travelers who are looking for a fun and active cruise experience. The cruise line offers a variety of onboard activities, from rock climbing and ice skating to zip-lining and surfing. Prices for a seven-night Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean start at around $600 per person, although this price can vary depending on the time of year and the cabin type you choose.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line is another great option for solo travelers, with a wide range of cruise itineraries and cabin options. The cruise line offers a unique "studio" cabin option that is specifically designed for solo travelers, with a full-size bed and no single supplement fee. A seven-night Caribbean cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line costs around $500 per person. However, the cost may vary based on the period of the year when you are booking and the type of cabin you select.
  • Holland America Line is a more luxurious cruise line that offers a quieter and more refined cruise experience. The cruise line is known for its gourmet dining options and elegant onboard atmosphere. Prices for a seven-night Caribbean cruise on Holland America Line start at around $800 per person, although this cost may change based on the season and the type of cabin you select.

Choosing an itinerary

The itinerary you choose can also have a big impact on the cost of your cruise. Some destinations are more expensive to visit than others, and some itineraries include more port stops than others. For example, a seven-night Caribbean cruise that stops in three ports might be less expensive than a seven-night Caribbean cruise that stops in five ports.

Another factor to consider is the time of year you choose to cruise. The high season for cruising is usually during the summer months and around major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas when demand for cruises is higher. Prices can be significantly lower during shoulder seasons, typically the months just before or after the high season.

Choosing a cabin type

The type of cabin you choose can also have a big impact on the cost of your cruise. Solo travelers typically have a few options when it comes to cabin types:

  • Inside cabin: An inside cabin is the most affordable option but doesn't have a window or balcony.
  • Ocean view cabin: An ocean view cabin has a window or porthole that allows you to see outside but doesn't have a balcony.
  • Balcony cabin: A balcony cabin has a private balcony allowing you to enjoy the view from your outdoor space.
  • Suite: A suite is the most luxurious option, with a separate living area, a large balcony, and additional amenities like a butler or concierge service.

The cost of a cruise can vary greatly depending on a number of factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the cruise line, the level of accommodation, and the time of year. Generally speaking, cruises can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars per person. It's best to do some research and compare prices from different cruise lines to find a package that suits your budget and preferences.

Cruises for Singles and Solo Travelers

Vacations To Go hosts more singles and helps more solo cruisers than any other company. Whether you are looking for a fun-loving group of singles to travel with or merely trying to find the lowest possible price for a solo traveler, you've come to the right place.

Every year, we offer a wide selection of fabulous itineraries in different regions of the world, on outstanding cruise ships, and negotiate an extremely low rate for our single and solo travelers. We send trained hosts from our headquarters to organize get-togethers, cocktail parties, dinner seating and more, allowing individuals or friends to travel as part of a large and fun-loving group of singles.

Our hosted singles department is open Mon-Fri 8am to 7pm, Sat-Sun 9am to 6pm, U.S. Central Time. Check out our hosted singles cruises! If you are not looking for a hosted singles cruise but still want the lowest possible rate to cruise as a single, we can help with that, too.

Cruise lines generally charge a "single supplement" to passengers traveling solo. From the cruise line's perspective, what they are selling is cabin space, and if there are two or more people in a cabin, they split the cost of that space. People traveling alone pay for all the space by themselves.

Most cruise lines start with the per-person rate based on double occupancy and add 50-100% to the price for a single. That means that a cabin that sells for $1,000 per person based on double occupancy would be sold to a single for $1,500 to $2,000.

At Vacations To Go, we're sympathetic to our single customers' desires for a great price. We've scoured tens of thousands of departures to identify and secure the lowest single supplements for our customers, including great cabins that can be reserved by our single customers with no supplement at all. Check out our cruises with a low (or no) single supplement!

8 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Woman on a cruise

In this article I’m going share some tips for finding your perfect cruise line as well as tell all my fellow solo cruisers about how much fun they’re missing out on by not taking these vacations alone.

Solo travel is becoming more popular

As solo travel becomes more popular, more cruise lines are catering to solo travelers. Many people want the flexibility of enjoying their own time while on vacation but still having access to group activities and events. There are many different ways that solo travelers can enjoy a cruise ship without feeling like they’re alone all of the time!

Solo travel can be more expensive

Beware the dreaded “single supplement”.

Cruise fare pricing is typically based on two people sharing a stateroom which is called “double occupancy.” Solo cruisers will typically pay 125% – 200% above published prices (for one-person) on most cruise lines. This extra charge is called a “single supplement.”

However, some cruise lines are tailored to single travelers, and offer discounts for the solo traveler. Some of these perks include reduced or waived single supplements. A few have even built staterooms designed and priced for a single occupants.

Many cruise lines are adding new amenities for solo travelers so that everyone has the opportunity to feel included on their vacation!

Advantages of solo travel

One of the biggest advantages of solo travel is that solo travelers will get to explore ports more freely. There are no plans, no schedules and fewer people needing attention. A solo traveler can go at their own pace instead of being held back by others!

In addition to exploring on your own terms you’ll have plenty of opportunities for new friends while you’re solo. Cruise ships are built for socialization since that is their biggest draw! Whether it’s a formal event, or simply meeting someone at dinner, there will always be an opportunity to meet new people and make lasting connections.

Many solo travelers enjoy the freedom of being able to do what they want when they want. No one else has to be ready at the same time as you, and there’s no waiting for other people to go out. If solo travel is right for you then it will allow you ultimate flexibility in planning your vacation itinerary!

Many solo travelers like that they can sleep late if they want, or wake up early without having to disturb someone else sleeping next to them. They also like the extra storage space solo travelers get in their cabins which is not available to those who share a room with someone else!

Finally, solo travel allows you to keep your vacation stress free and worry-free by having no one else’s needs but your own that have to be taken into consideration. No worrying about anyone else’s hangovers, preferences or allergies.

Best cruise lines for solo travelers

Here is our list of the best cruise lines for solo travelers. Please note that single cabins are typically in high demand and typically sell out quickly. Most need to be booked at least one year in advance if not longer.

Celebrity Cruises (Premium cruise line)

On Celebrity, solo travelers can book single “Infinite Verandas” balcony stateroom on Celebrity’s Edge-class ships (Edge, Apex, and Beyond) . These staterooms feature a queen-size bed. They are slightly smaller than the standard Infinite balcony rooms at 131 square feet, but plenty roomy for a single traveler. Celebrity Silhouette has 4 inside single cabins.

Crystal Cruises (Ultra-luxury cruse line)

Solo travelers are a niche group that make up to 25 percent of Crystal’s passengers. Solo-oriented activities onboard and low single supplements (as low as 10% for certain categories and cruises) attract solo visitors.

Holland America Cruises (Premium cruise line)

If you are a little older and a solo traveler, Holland America may be a good fit for you. Holland America is known for catering their services toward this demographic and they offer many programs that don’t require partners like activities which can be enjoyed alone or with others in tow! For example: the culinary workshops allow participants an opportunity hands-on cooking experience, while wine tastings give everyone something fun. Their Single Partners Program hosts onboard events such as cocktail mixers. So why not pack up your bags today?

Their newer ships now offer solo cabins. You’ll find them on the Niew Statendam, Rotterdam, and Koningsdam each offering 12 solo cabins. Room size varies from 127 – 172 square feet.

MSC Cruises (Contemporary/mass market cruise line)

MSC has “Interior Studio” cabins designed for solo cruisers. These cabins are about 129 square feet.

MSC frequently waives the “single supplement” charge for solo travelers on select itineraries for inside, oceanview and balcony categories. The best time to get these deals is after final payment and if it looks like the cruise will not sail full.

Norwegian (Contemporary/mass market cruise line)

Norwegian was the leader in building solo cabins. It has made a concerted effort to accommodate solo travelers by adding studio cabins on many of their newest ships. The Norwegian Epic was the first of its ships to build 128 studios designed for the single traveler. Other Norwegian ships now have solo cabins as well – Breakaway – 59; Getaway – 82; Escape – 82; and Pride Of America In Hawaii – 4 cabins.

Norwegian single Studios are inside cabins, but are comfortable with a full-sized bed, flat screen television (some which can act like a virtual window giving you an ocean view) and private bathroom. Cabins are about 100 square feet.

To take solo travel to the next level, Norwegian created the Studio Complex and Lounge, a shared social place where solo travelers can meet, chat and enjoy a coffee or cocktail.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (Contemporary/mass market cruise line)

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line offers solo travelers the opportunity to purchase a solo cabin on many of their most popular ships. Almost half of Royal Caribbean’s fleet now has solo cabins. The type of cabin varies by class of ship. Studio Interiors can be found on the Anthem, Adventure, Brilliance, Harmony, Jewel, Mariner, Ovation, Quantum, Radiance and Serenade of the Seas and offer 96 square feet. Studio Virtual Balcony cabins can be found on the Anthem, Harmony, Ovation and Quantum of the Seas are similar to Studio Interiors but feature a “Virtual Balcony” flat screen television which simulates a picture window. A Studio Ocean View can be found on the Harmony of the Seas with 96 square feet of space. While the Studio Ocean View Balcony on the Anthem, Quantum and Ovation with 119 square feet of cabin space plus an additional 55 square feet for the balcony.

On Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships, solo cabins are located in Central Park and Boardwalk neighborhoods; one is an inside stateroom while the other is an outside with obstructed views (meaning you’ll be able to see out but people walking along the promenade deck may be able to see in). Solo travelers have access to the Cruise Connections Lounges where they can relax and take advantage of Wi-Fi.

Silversea Cruises (Ultra-luxury cruise line)

Silversea has always prided themselves as being an inviting place where everyone feels welcome–even if you’re going alone! As part of this philosophy there’s even something special waiting in store just for passengers travelling independently, a champagne reception for singles. Promotion single supplements can be as low as zero. Typical supplement range from 10% – 30%.

Virgin Cruises (Premium cruise line)

Virgin is a new cruise line and launched with its first ship the Scarlet Lady. There are two solo cabins categories available on the ship. The Insider is between 105 – 177 square feet. The Seaview ranges from 130 – 190 square feet.

With so many options out there for solo travelers, you’ll be able to find the perfect cruise for your needs no matter what type of traveler you are. Whether it’s a luxury experience or an affordable option, we can help you find which one is best suited for your solo travel plans! Are there special prices for single guests?

Although we don't have specific pricing for single occupancy, we do offer studio staterooms on select ships. The advantage of these studio staterooms is that they can be reserved by someone cruising alone without the usual single supplement fee, which doubles the cost of the cruise fare. We offer an inside studio stateroom, virtual balcony staterooms - as well as a super studio ocean view stateroom with balcony - and these rooms range in size from 101 square feet to 199 square feet. They're the perfect option for someone who wants to cruise alone and are available on Brilliance of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas.

Why is single person double the price of double occupancy?

By Eragon666 , September 27, 2021 in Royal Caribbean International

Cool Cruiser

Just debarked a few days ago, but looking to board again :)  I might go all on my own, so I was looking at current pricing. But it seems like single occupancy is at a much higher price, for example:

17 oct - 24 oct 2021 on Harmony of the seas a Guaranteed state room balcony is 597 per person for 2 (1194 total) Same date but 1 guest, Balcony has no guaranteed state rooms available and balcony pricing is starting from 2320 euro.

I would understand if you would pay 150% or 200% for single occupancy, but paying for 4 guests seems a little bit too much?

Is there a way to go cheaper on a single cruise? Or should I just book for 2 persons and cancel one at the end? Thanks!

You could always book for two guest and let the second guest be a no-show at the pier.

Suggest you book for 2 passengers then have the guest be a no show and after the sailing they will refund you the port fees and taxes for the 2nd guest.

At least that is how they do it with US sailings.

I know it's not for when you currently want to sail, but you can find cruises where solo pricing is more sensible.  There is currently a 60% off the second person's fare.  For one person, they don't seem to be applying that to your October cruise for some reason.  However, in September 2022, on the Brilliance of the Seas' 7 Night Greek Isles Cruise (25 Sept 2022), I have booked a solo balcony cabin that did get discounted 60% for the second person fare, which since going solo, did decrease the price a little.  I also qualify for a balcony cabin discount and because I'm over age 55 they discounted it even more to my surprise.  I'm paying only $1812 for a solo in a balcony cabin on a 7 day cruise.  I'll take that.  I also booked the next week as a back-to-back for $1747.

So you might want to look for your 2022 cruises and put a deposit down on something during this current sale.

Royal often doesn't allow solos to book GTY rates - for whatever reason. Like someone else said you can do the no-show route.

Or search around for different sailings with better solo rates. There's some sites out there that do that.

Some other things to think about for solo fares. For a solo, studio cabins receive one point per night, standard double occupancy cabins receive two points per night and junior suites and above receive three points per night.  Currently, there is a double points promo for sailings through Dec. 2022 if you book by Sept. 30.

I have had my advertised book on board OBC reduced in the past when making a solo booking.  Not sure if this still applies under the current scheme for OBC on Next Cruise bookings.

It is possible that I might wind up without someone in my room, as the one that was to be with me, had health issues and had to cancel out.  In my over 15 cruises, I have always had someone in my room. I will have at least 6 other family members with me, so that will help if no one is in my room.  So this part is new to me. I have booked/paid for the 4 balcony rooms.  If I don't have someone in my room, how do I go about getting paid back the port fees and taxes? I booked through an agency here where I live. Do they handle that, or do I go through RCL directly?

It's automatically refunded when they no show....eventually.

You might have to call to make sure you get the right points for the sailing.

Thanks for all the answers. Do you get the full solo-sailer points (2 or 4 now with the double points), if the second person has a no show?

You missed a sale during the last week of August and first week of September as  double occupancy was being sold as a solo.   Saved myself some $500 on my January Allure cruise.

Most of the time, yes.

Twolittleboys

At the moment there are still some decent solo prices around. For example, if you are slightly flexible you could do Harmony from Rome on October 14 and it would be Euro 665 in an oceanview or 853 with balcony. Much better prices than normally.

Usually, did once about 4yrs ago

Onecruiser, when you say GTY rates, does that stand for guarantee rates? All I can tell you is I booked 4 balcony rooms, and paid for ALL of them, and I have no clue if they were guaranteed or not, as my cruise agent where I live got them for me. I just didn't know how it works if someone is a no show in my room, as that has never happened to me before.

Nelblu, I'm sorry I missed the sale, but I had no clue until just now that I would be cruising solo, as these 4 rooms were purchased over a couple months ago.

Someone mentioned "points", but I have no clue what your talking about.

Yes, GTY means Guarantee cabin pricing mechanism.  When you by a GTY cabin, you do not get to pick a specific cabin number.  It is assigned to you by the cruise line some time after you do your booking.  So if you or your travel agent did not pick specific cabins, you are in GTY cabins.

The “points” being discussed refers to Royal Caribbean’s loyalty program named “Crown and Anchor”.  Upon completion of each cruise, you get points.  Sometimes they award extra points as part of promotions.  The more points you get, the higher level of perks you get in return.

When I booked my October solo trip, the sale was set up that my 4 night booking with taxes and gratuity was under $350. Play around with the sales, and try different bookings. I had to book this through the Royal Caribbean site, when I tried other sites that were offering onboard credits, I could not get the price I did.

Royal's computers can't always figure the "second passenger % off" sale properly if you are only booking for one person.  (Their IT shortcomings are well-known.)

For example, on a "second passenger 50% off" sale, if the first person is $1000 then the second passenger is $500.  However, when booking for just one person ($1000), the computer sees a single person and automatically applies the "single supplement" ($1000 additional fare). Because the computer doesn't see a second person, it doesn't apply the 50% off from the sale. The way to get around this is to actually talk to a human -- either a travel agent or someone in Royal's booking department.  They can apply the sale so that you're only paying the $1500 fare that you'd get with a second person. You can get around that by booking two people and waiting to have the taxes refunded after the cruise, but you also have to pay a deposit for two people, and if something happens and you have to cancel, the FCC to be refunded will be credited to the two names you put on the original booking -- not all to your name.

MeHeartCruising, thanks for trying to explain to me about the Guarantee of the rooms.  Yes my agent showed me (diagram) where the rooms might be, if I wanted to pick them out, and I did.  So I gather that these rooms are guaranteed rooms?  If that is the case, does that mean if I don't have someone else in my room I cannot get the port fees/taxes, etc. back?

You Selected and booked specific room numbers and they show in your reservation, that is not a guaranty booking.  Guaranty means that you will be assigned a cabin later that is no less the category that you paid for, and sometimes upgraded from the category that you purchased.

To the best of my knowledge, a ni show is refundable taxes whether you picked your specific cabin number or booked a guaranty.

A "guaranty" room on a cruise kinda means the opposite of what you're thinking.   If you chose a particular room number from a set of available rooms, that is not what is called a "GTY' room... even though you are essentially guaranteed to have that room number (there will on rare occasion be a situation where there will be damage to the room and they'll have to move you to a different one while repairs are being made, but 99.999% of the time, you'll get that room number that was assigned at booking).   In cruising, a GTY room is where you choose a category of room, and you take your chances of what room you'll actually be assigned by the cruise line.  This type of booking is typically a bit cheaper than when you pick your own room number.  The meaning behind the word "guaranty" is that by choosing this type of booking, you are guaranteed to receive a room that is at minimum the same category that you have chosen.

For example, if you choose a "balcony guaranty" room, you will get at least a balcony room, with the chance of being assigned a higher category room (junior suite or actual suite).  If you choose an "OV guarantee" you will at least get a room with an oceanview window, or you could also get a balcony room or something else higher. If you book a balcony guaranty, you're not going to be placed in an inside or window-only room.   For people who want to save a few bucks and aren't at all particular about where on the ship their room is located, booking a GTY room can save them some money.  For people who want their room to be on a certain deck or in a particular part of the ship, a GTY room is not a good choice.

Thanks

Thank you for the "explanation" of a guaranteed room. This part is a new ball game for me, as for the over 15 cruises I have been blessed to be on, I didn't pick the "exact" room, only my TA would make the suggestion from the area, decks, that I might tell her I would like to be on.

Many of us on CC were not aware of this sale and it was good CC Samaritan that shared the good news.  Some that had already paid in full got OBCs instead of price reductions.

Very good analysis, but I've seen on rare occasions where a guaranty was cheaper than you select your cabin .  Did not make any sense.

Which is why I said:

Everything is supply/demand driven, and there is a computer algorithm that adjusts pricing based on how things are selling.  I've seen oceanview rooms cheaper than insides, and even neighborhood balconies cheaper than insides and oceanviews (even before applying the CAS discount).

Yes, seen those too.  However, I did not realize that you can get a cabin  upgrade of a GTY, eg. from balcony to JS.  I was under the impression that it had to be in the same category

Most cruise lines start with the per-person rate based on double occupancy and add 50-100% to the price for a single.
